The main aim of the current study was to explore the effects of a 1-year recreational football protocol on bone health parameters (bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), femoral neck geometry and composite indices of femoral neck strength) in a group of healthy inactive 50-year-old men. 51 middle-aged men voluntarily participated in this study, but only 41 of them completed it. Thus, the study population included 11 former football (FF) players and 30 inactive men. Inactive men were assigned to 3 different groups: controls (n=10), recreational football 30 (RF30; n=10) and recreational football 60 (RF60; n=10). The RF30 group performed two sessions of recreational football per week; the duration of each session was 30 minutes. The RF60 group performed two sessions of recreational football per week; the duration of each session was 60 minutes. The current study has demonstrated that whole body (WB) BMC, femoral neck BMD, cross-sectional moment of inertia, compression strength index, bending strength index and impact strength index increased in both experimental groups (RF30 and RF60) but not in the control group. The percentages of variations in bone health parameters were not significantly different between RF30 and RF60. In conclusion, this study suggests that recreational football is an effective method to improve bone health parameters in middle-aged men. The purpose of this study was to compare composite indices of femoral neck strength ((compression strength index [CSI], bending strength index [BSI], and impact strength index [ISI]) in inactive middle-aged men (n = 20) and middle-aged former football players (n = 15). 35 middle-aged men participated in this study. Body composition and bone variables were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Composite indices of femoral neck strength (CSI, BSI, and ISI) were calculated. Handgrip strength, vertical jump, maximum power of the lower limbs (watts), horizontal jump, maximal half-squat strength, maximal bench-press strength, sprint performance (10 meters), and maximum oxygen consumption (VO 2 max, ml/min/kg) were evaluated using validated tests. CSI, BSI, and ISI were significantly higher in football players compared to inactive men. Vertical jump, horizontal jump, maximal half-squat strength, VO 2 max and sprint performance were significantly different between the 2 groups. CSI, BSI, and ISI remained significantly higher in football players compared to inactive men after adjusting for physical activity level. Objectives: Hip fragility fractures were regarded as one of the most severe, but recent papers report on the underestimated burden of vertebral compression fractures. This study aims to compare morbidity and mortality of hip and vertebral fragility fractures in patients treated in the same setting., Methods: Patients aged ≥50 years with hip fracture, and those with vertebral fracture presenting to our hospital between January 2014 and January 2017 were included. Patients were evaluated 1 year after their index fracture. SF-36 scores, mortality, and institutionalization are then recorded. Patients were divided into 2 groups: hip fractures and vertebral fractures., Results: There were 106 and 90 patients respectively evaluated in hip and vertebral fracture groups at 1 year. Patients in both groups were comparable for age, sex, comorbidities and neuropsychiatric condition (P > 0.05). At 1 year follow-up, SF-36 showed better averages in all 8 scales in hip fracture group compared to vertebral fracture group. Mortality in the hip fracture group reached 32.1% compared to 10% for the vertebral fracture group (P < 0.01). Fifteen patients were institutionalized in the hip fracture group compared to 18 patients in the vertebral fracture group (P > 0.05)., Conclusions: When comparing patients treated in the same setting, hip fracture is associated with significantly increased mortality than vertebral fracture; however, the latter is associated with more morbidity., (© 2020 The Korean Society of Osteoporosis. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between several physical performance variables and bone parameters in a group of middle-aged men., Methods: 50 middle-aged men participated in this study. Body composition and bone variables were evaluated by DXA. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at the whole body (WB), total radius (TR), lumbar spine (L1-L4), total hip (TH) and femoral neck (FN). Geometric indices of femoral neck (FN) strength were also calculated by DXA. Handgrip strength, vertical jump, maximum power of the lower limbs (watts), maximal half-squat strength, maximal bench-press strength, sprint performance (10 m) and maximum oxygen consumption (VO 2 max, L/min) were evaluated using validated tests., Results: VO 2 max (L/min), maximum power of the lower limbs, maximal half-squat strength, maximal bench-press strength, handgrip and lean mass were positively correlated to many bone parameters. Lean mass was the strongest determinant of WB BMC. VO 2 max (L/min) was the strongest determinant of WB BMD, TH BMD and FN BMD. Maximum power was the strongest determinant of total radius BMD., Conclusion: The current study suggests that VO 2 max (L/min), lean mass and maximum power of the lower limbs are the strongest determinants of bone variables in middle-aged men., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflict of interest.
