In this work, we explored theoretically the spatial resolution of magnetic solitons and the variations of their sizes when subjected to a Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) measurement. Next to tip-sample separation, we considered reversal in the magnetization direction of the tip, showing that the magnetic soliton size measurement can be strongly affected by the magnetization direction of the tip. In addition to previous studies that only consider thermal fluctuations, we developed a theoretical method to obtain the minimum observable length of a magnetic soliton and its length variation due to the influence of the MFM tip by minimizing the soliton's magnetic energy. Our model uses analytical and numerical calculations and prevents overestimating the characteristic length scales from MFM images. We compared our method with available data from MFM measurements of domain wall widths, and we performed micromagnetic simulations of a skyrmion-tip system, finding a good agreement for both attractive and repulsive domain wall profile signals and for the skyrmion diameter in the presence of the magnetic tip. Our results provide significant insights for a better interpretation of MFM measurements of different magnetic solitons and will be helpful in the design of potential reading devices based on magnetic solitons as information carriers., Comment: 18 pages. Finding new energy-efficient methods for exciting magnetization dynamics is one of the key challenges in magnonics. In this work, we present an approach to excite the gyrotropic dynamics of magnetic vortices through the phenomenon of inverse magnetostriction, also known as the Villari effect. We develop an analytical model based on the Thiele formalism that describes the gyrotropic motion of the vortex core including the energy contributions due to inverse magnetostriction. Based on this model, we predict excitations of the vortex core resonances by surface acoustic waves whose frequency is resonant with the frequency of the vortex core. We verify the model's prediction using micromagnetic simulations, and show the dependence of the vortex core's oscillation radius on the surface acoustic wave amplitude and the static bias field. Our study contributes to the advancement of energy-efficient magnetic excitations by relying on voltage-induced driven dynamics, which is an alternative to conventional current-induced excitations.

Magnetic skyrmions are fascinating topological particle-like textures promoted by a trade-off among interfacial properties (perpendicular anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI)) and dipolar interactions. Depending on the dominant interaction, complex spin textures, including pure N\'eel and hybrid skyrmions have been observed in multilayer heterostructures. A quantification of these different spin textures typically requires a depth-reoslved magnetic imaging or scattering techniques. In the present work, we will show qualitatively different collapsing dynamics for pure N\'eel and hybrid skyrmions induced by a perpendicular magnetic field in two representative systems, [Pt/Co/Ir]15 and [Ta/CoFeB/MgO]15 multilayers. Skyrmions in the former stack undergo two morphological transitions, upon reversing the perpendicular field direction. Skyrmions in [Ta/CoFeB/MgO]15 multilayers exhibit a continuous transition, which is mainly linked to a reversible change of the skyrmion size. A full micromagnetic phase diagram is presented to identify these two collapsing mechanisms as a function of material parameters. Since the two distinct collapsing dynamics rely on the detailed layer-dependent spin structures of skyrmions, they could be used as potential fingerprints for identifying the skyrmion type in magnetic multilayers. This study conducts a comprehensive investigation into the reversal mechanism of magnetic vortex cores in a nanopillar system composed of two coupled ferromagnetic dots under zero magnetic field conditions. The research employs a combination of experimental and simulation methods to gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of magnetic vortex cores. The findings reveal that by applying a constant direct current, the orientation of the vortex cores can be manipulated, resulting in a switch in one of the dots at a specific current value. The micromagnetic simulations provide evidence that this switch is a consequence of a deformation in the vortex profile caused by the increasing velocity of the vortex cores resulting from the constant amplitude of the trajectory as frequency increases. These findings offer valuable new insights into the coupled dynamics of magnetic vortex cores and demonstrate the feasibility of manipulating their orientation using direct currents under zero magnetic field conditions. The results of this study have potential implications for the development of vortex-based non-volatile memory technologies. \end{abstract}

Current-induced self-sustained magnetization oscillations in spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) are promising candidates for ultra-agile microwave sources or detectors. While usually STNOs behave as a monochrome source, we report here clear bimodal simultaneous emission of incommensurate microwave oscillations, where the two tones correspond to two parametrically coupled eigenmodes with tunable splitting. The emission range is crucially sensitive to the change in hybridization of the eigenmodes of free and fixed layers, for instance, through a slight tilt of the applied magnetic field from the normal of the nano-pillar. Our experimental findings are supported both analytically and by micromagnetic simulations, which ascribe the process to four-magnon scattering between a pair of radially symmetric magnon modes and a pair of magnon modes with opposite azimuthal index. Our findings open up new possibilities for cognitive telecommunications and neuromorphic systems that use frequency multiplexing to improve communication performance.

We consider the least-squares regression problem with unknown noise variance, where the observed data points are allowed to be corrupted by outliers. Building on the median-of-means (MOM) method introduced by Lecue and Lerasle Ann.Statist.48(2):906-931(April 2020) in the case of known noise variance, we propose a general MOM approach for simultaneous inference of both the regression function and the noise variance, requiring only an upper bound on the noise level. Interestingly, this generalization requires care due to regularity issues that are intrinsic to the underlying convex-concave optimization problem. In the general case where the regression function belongs to a convex class, we show that our simultaneous estimator achieves with high probability the same convergence rates and a similar risk bound as if the noise level was unknown, as well as convergence rates for the estimated noise standard deviation. In the high-dimensional sparse linear setting, our estimator yields a robust analog of the square-root LASSO. Under weak moment conditions, it jointly achieves with high probability the minimax rates of estimation $s^{1/p} \sqrt{(1/n) \log(p/s)}$ for the $\ell_p$-norm of the coefficient vector, and the rate $\sqrt{(s/n) \log(p/s)}$ for the estimation of the noise standard deviation. Here $n$ denotes the sample size, $p$ the dimension and $s$ the sparsity level. We finally propose an extension to the case of unknown sparsity level $s$, providing a jointly adaptive estimator $(\widetilde \beta, \widetilde \sigma, \widetilde s)$. A concept of an electrically tunable resonance detector of THz-frequency signals based on antiferromagnetic/heavy metal (AFM/HM) hetero-structure is proposed. The conversion of a THz-frequency input signal into DC voltage is done using the inverse spin Hall effect in an (AFM/HM) bilayer. An additional bias DC current in the HM layer can be used to vary the effective anisotropy of the AFM, and, therefore, to tune the AFMR frequency. The proposed AFM/HM hetero-structure works as a resonance-type quadratic detector which can be tuned by the bias current in the range of at least 10 percent of the AFMR frequency and our estimations show that the sensitivity of this detector could be comparable to that of modern detectors based on the Schottky, Gunn or graphene-based diodes.

This paper introduces the concept of spin-orbit-torque-MRAM (SOT-MRAM) based physical unclonable function (PUF). The secret of the PUF is stored into a random state of a matrix of perpendicular SOT-MRAMs. Here, we show experimentally and with micromagnetic simulations that this random state is driven by the intrinsic nonlinear dynamics of the free layer of the memory excited by the SOT. In detail, a large enough current drives the magnetization along an in-plane direction. Once the current is removed, the in-plane magnetic state becomes unstable evolving towards one of the two perpendicular stable configurations randomly. In addition, an hybrid CMOS/spintronics model is used to evaluate the electrical characteristics of a PUF realized with an array of 16x16 SOT-MRAM cells. Beyond robustness against voltage and temperature variations, hardware authentication based on this PUF scheme has additional advantages over other PUF technologies such as non-volatility (no power consumption in standby mode), reconfigurability (the secret can be rewritten), and scalability. The study of thermodynamics of topological defects is an important challenge to understand their underlying physics. Among them, magnetic skyrmions have a leading role for their physical properties and potential applications in storage and neuromorphic computing. In this paper, the thermodynamic statistics of magnetic skyrmions is derived. It is shown that the skyrmion free energy can be modelled via a parabolic function and the diameters statistics obeys the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. This allows for making an analogy between the behavior of the distribution of skyrmion diameters statistics and the diluted gas Maxwell-Boltzmann molecules distribution at thermodynamical equilibrium. The calculation of the skyrmion configurational entropy, due to thermally-induced changes of size and shape of the skyrmion, is essential for the determination of thermal fluctuations of the skyrmion energy around its average value. We present a study of the stability of room-temperature skyrmions in [Ir/Fe/Co/Pt] thin film multilayers, using the First Order Reversal Curve (FORC) technique and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). FORC diagrams reveal irreversible changes in magnetization upon field reversals, which can be correlated with the evolution of local magnetic textures probed by MFM. Using this approach, we have identified two different mechanisms - (1) skyrmion merger and (2) skyrmion nucleation followed by stripe propagation - which facilitate magnetization reversal in a changing magnetic field. Analysing the signatures of these mechanisms in the FORC diagram allows us to identify magnetic "histories" - i.e. precursor field sweep protocols - capable of enhancing the final zero-field skyrmion density. Our results indicate that FORC measurements can play a useful role in characterizing spin topology in thin film multilayers, and are particularly suitable for identifying samples in which skyrmion populations can be stabilized at zero field., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. The study of wave propagation in chains of anharmonic periodic systems is of fundamental importance to understand the response of dynamical absorbers of vibrations and acoustic metamaterials working in nonlinear regime. Here, we derive an analytical nonlinear dispersion relation for periodic chains of anharmonic mass-spring and mass-in-mass systems resulting from considering the hypothesis of weak anharmonic energy and a periodic distribution function as ansatz of a general solution of the nonlinear equations of motion. Numerical simulations show that this expression is valid for anharmonic potential energy up to 50% of the harmonic one. A two-dimensional analytical model for the description of the excitation of nonreciprocal spin waves by spin current in spin-Hall oscillators in the presence of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (i-DMI) is developed. The theory allows one to calculate the threshold current for the excitation of spin waves, as well as the frequencies and spatial profiles of the excited spin wave modes. It is found, that the frequency of the excited spin waves exhibits a quadratic red shift with the i-DMI strength. At the same time, in the range of small and moderate values of the i-DMI constant, the averaged wave number of the excited spin waves is almost independent of the i-DMI, which results in a rather weak dependence on the i-DMI of the threshold current of the spin wave excitation. Understanding the physical properties of magnetic skyrmions is important for fundamental research with the aim to develop new spintronic device paradigms where both logic and memory can be integrated at the same level. Here, we show a universal model based on the micromagnetic formalism that can be used to study skyrmion stability as a function of magnetic field and temperature. We consider ultrathin, circular ferromagnetic magnetic dots. Our results show that magnetic skyrmions with a small radius compared to the dot radius are always metastable, while large radius skyrmions form a stable ground state. The change of energy profile determines the weak (strong) size dependence of the metastable (stable) skyrmion as a function of temperature and/or field. These results can open a path toward the design of optimal materials for skyrmion based devices.

A storage scheme based on racetrack memory, where the information can be coded in a domain or a skyrmion, seems to be an alternative to conventional hard disk drive for high density storage. Here, we perform a full micromagnetic study of the performance of synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) racetrack memory in terms of velocity and sensitivity to defects by using experimental parameters. We find that to stabilize a SAF skyrmion, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction in the top and the bottom ferromagnet should have an opposite sign. The velocity of SAF skyrmion and SAF Neel domain wall are of the same order and can reach values larger than 1200 m/s if a spin-orbit torque from the spin-Hall effect with opposite sign is applied to both ferromagnets.

Purpose: Investigation of the feasibility of the R2* mapping techniques by using latest theoretical models corrected for confounding factors and optimized for signal to noise ratio. Theory and Methods: The improvement of the performance of state of the art MRI relaxometry algorithms is challenging because of a non-negligible bias and still unresolved numerical instabilities. Here, R2* mapping reconstructions, including complex-fitting with multi-spectral fat-correction by using single-decay (1D) and double-decay (2D) formulation, are studied in order to identify optimal configuration parameters and minimize numerical artifacts. The effects of echo number, echo spacing, and fat/water relaxation model are evaluated through simulated and in-vivo data. We also explore the stability of such models by analyzing the impact of high percentage of fat infiltrations and local transverse relaxation differences among biological species. Results: The main limits of the MRI relaxometry are the presence of bias and the occurrence of artifacts which affect its accuracy. Chemical-shift complex reconstructions R2*-corrected with 1D formulation exhibit a large bias in presence of a significant difference in the relaxation rates of fat and water and with fat concentration larger than 30%. We find that for fat-dominated tissues or in patients affected by iron overload, MRI reconstructions accounting for multi-exponential relaxation time provide accurate R2* measurements and are less prone to numerical artifacts. Conclusions: Complex fitting 2D formulation outperforms the conventional 1D approximation in various diagnostic scenarios. Although it still lacks of numerical stability which requires model enhancement and support from spectroscopy, it offers promising perspectives for the development of relaxometry as a reliable tool to improve tissue characterization and monitoring of neuromuscular disorders.

Spin-Hall oscillators are promising sources of spin-wave signals for magnonics applications, and can serve as building blocks for magnonic logic in ultralow power computation devices. Here, we analytically and micromagnetically study magnetization dynamics excited in a Spin-Hall oscillator with oblique magnetization when the spin-Hall effect and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction act simultaneously. Our key results are (i) excitation of nonreciprocal spin-waves propagating perpendicularly to the in-plane projection of the static magnetization, (ii) skyrmions generation by pure spin-current, (iii) excitation of a new spin-wave mode with a spiral spatial profile originating from a gyrotropic rotation of a dynamical skyrmion. These results demonstrate that Spin-Hall oscillators can be used as generators of magnetic skyrmions and different types of propagating spin-waves for magnetic data storage and signal processing applications.

Solitons are very promising for the design of next generation of ultralow power devices for storage and computation. The key ingredient to achieve this goal is the fundamental understanding of their stabilization and manipulation. Here, we show how the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction (i DMI) is able to lift the energy degeneracy of a magnetic vortex state by stabilizing a topological soliton with radial chirality, hereafter called radial vortex. It has a non-integer skyrmion number S (0.5<|S|<1) due to both the vortex core polarity and the magnetization tilting induced by the i DMI boundary conditions. Micromagnetic simulations predict that a magnetoresistive memory based on the radial vortex state in both free and polarizer layers can be efficiently switched by a threshold current density smaller than 106 A/cm2. The switching processes occur via the nucleation of topologically connected vortices and vortex antivortex pairs, followed by spin wave emissions due to vortex antivortex annihilations.

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected states that are very promising for the design of the next generation of ultralow-power electronic devices. In this letter, we propose a magnetic tunnel junction based spin-transfer torque diode with a magnetic skyrmion as ground state and a perpendicular polarizer patterned as nanocontact for a local injection of the current. The key result is the possibility to achieve sensitivities (i.e. detection voltage over input microwave power) larger than 2000V/W for optimized contact diameters. We employed micro-focused Brillouin light scattering to study the amplification of the thermal spin wave eigenmodes by means of a pure spin current, generated by the spin-Hall effect, in a transversely magnetized Pt(4nm)/NiFe(4nm)/SiO2(5nm) layered nanowire with lateral dimensions 500x2750 nm2. The frequency and the cross section of both the center (fundamental) and the edge spin wave modes have been measured as a function of the intensity of the injected dc electric current. The frequency of both modes exhibits a clear redshift while their cross section is greatly enhanced on increasing the intensity of the injected dc. A threshold-like behavior is observed for a value of the injected dc of 2.8 mA. Interestingly an additional mode, localized in the central part of the nanowire, appears at higher frequency on increasing the intensity of the injected dc above the threshold value. Magnetic Tunnel Junction devices find use in several applications based on the exploitation of the Spin-Transfer Torque phenomenon. The Ferromagnetic Resonance curve is a key characteristic of any Magnetic Tunnel Junctions. It is usually characterized both experimentally and numerically by performing a lot of measurements of the magnetic response to a sinusoidal field or current. Here we propose the use of a chirp signal as excitation signal to reconstruct the Ferromagnetic resonance curve with a single measurement/simulation. A micromagnetic comparison of the proposed method with the traditional one is shown.

Perpendicular MgO-based Magnetic Tunnel Junctions are optimal candidates as building block of Spin Transfer Torque (STT) magnetoresistive memories. However, up to now, the only STT is not enough to achieve switching current density below 106 A/cm2. A recent work [Wang et al., Nature Mater., vol. 11, pp 64-68, Jan. 2012] has experimentally demonstrated the possibility to perform magnetization switching assisted by an electric-field at ultra-low current density. Theoretically, this switching has been studied by using a macrospin approach only. Here, we show a full micromagnetic study. We found that the switching occurs via a complex nucleation process including the nucleation of magnetic vortexes.

Vortices and antivortices are typical non uniform magnetization configurations that can be achieved in spin-torque oscillators with in-plane materials. Dynamics of a vortex-antivortex pair, namely vortex dipole, were predicted and already observed. In this paper, we present a systematic micromagnetic study on that kind of dynamics in different spin-valves where the current is injected through a nano-aperture. Rotation and translation of vortex dipoles and rotation of vortex quadrupoles are shown depending on the shape and the size of the spin-valve. Magnetic storage based on racetrack memory is very promising for the design of ultra-dense, low-cost and low-power storage technology. Information can be coded in a magnetic region between two domain walls or, as predicted recently, in topological magnetic objects known as skyrmions. Here, we show the technological advantages and limitations of using Bloch and Neel skyrmions manipulated by spin current generated within the ferromagnet or via the spin-Hall effect arising from a non-magnetic heavy metal underlayer. We found that the Neel skyrmion moved by the spin-Hall effect is a very promising strategy for technological implementation of the next generation of skyrmion racetrack memories (zero field, high thermal stability, and ultra-dense storage). We employed micromagnetics reinforced with an analytical formulation of skyrmion dynamics that we developed from the Thiele equation. We identified that the excitation, at high currents, of a breathing mode of the skyrmion limits the maximal velocity of the memory.

This letter studies the dynamical behavior of spin-Hall nanoscillators from a micromagnetic point of view. The model parameters have been identified by reproducing recent experimental data quantitatively. Our results indicate that a strongly localized mode is observed for in-plane bias fields such as in the experiments, while predict the excitation of an asymmetric propagating mode for large enough out-of plane bias field similarly to what observed in spin-torque nanocontact oscillators. Our findings show that spin-Hall nanoscillators can find application as spin-wave emitters for magnonic applications where spin waves are used for transmission and processing information on nanoscale., Comment: 14 pages

This paper predicts the effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and spin Hall effect in the spin-torque diode response of a Magnetic Tunnel Junction built over a Tantalum strip. Our results indicate that, for a microwave current large enough, the DMI can change qualitatively the resonant response by splitting the ferromagnetic resonance peak. We also find out that the two modes have a non-uniform spatial distribution.

This letter introduces a micromagnetic model able to characterize the magnetization dynamics in three terminal magnetic tunnel junctions, where the effects of spin-transfer torque and spin-orbit torque are taken into account. Our results predict that the possibility to separate electrically those two torque sources is very promising from a technological point of view for both next generation of nanoscale spintronic oscillators and microwave detectors. The magnetization switching of a thin ferromagnetic layer placed on top of a heavy metal (such as Pt, Ta or W) driven by an in-plane current has been observed in recent experiments. The magnetization dynamics of these processes is studied in a full micromagnetic framework which takes into account the transfer-torque from spin Hall effect due to the spin-orbit coupling. Simulations indicate that the reversal occurs via nucleation of complex magnetization patterns. In particular, magnetic bubbles appear during the reversal of the magnetization in the perpendicular configuration while for the in-plane configuration, nucleation of vortexes are observed.

The non-autonomous dynamics of spin-torque oscillators in presence of both microwave current and field at the same frequency can exhibit complex non-isochronous effects. A non-stationary mode hopping between quasi-periodic mode (frequency pulling) and periodic mode (phase locking), and a deterministic phase slip characterized by an oscillatory synchronization transient (non-Adlerian phase slip) after the phase jump of have been predicted. In the latter effect, a wavelet based analysis reveals that in the positive and negative phase jump the synchronization transient occurs at the frequency of the higher and lower sideband frequency respectively. The non-Adlerian phase slip effect, even if discovered in STOs, is a general property of non-autonomous behavior valid to any non-isochronous auto-oscillator in regime of moderate and large force locking., Comment: 12 page, 4 figures

In this paper, we employ micromagnetic simulations to study non-adiabatic stochastic resonance (NASR) excited by spin-transfer torque in a super-paramagnetic free layer nanomagnet of a nanoscale spin valve. We find that NASR dynamics involves thermally activated transitions among two static states and a single dynamic state of the nanomagnet and can be well understood in the framework of Markov chain rate theory. Our simulations show that a direct voltage generated by the spin valve at the NASR frequency is at least one order of magnitude greater than the dc voltage generated off the NASR frequency. Our computations also reproduce the main experimentally observed features of NASR such as the resonance frequency, the temperature dependence and the current bias dependence of the resonance amplitude. This paper describes a numerical experiment, based on full micromagnetic simulations of current-driven magnetization dynamics in nanoscale spin valves, to identify the origins of spectral linewidth broadening in spin torque oscillators. Our numerical results show two qualitatively different regimes of magnetization dynamics at zero temperature: regular (single-mode precessional dynamics) and chaotic. In the regular regime, the dependence of the oscillator integrated power on frequency is linear, and consequently the dynamics is well described by the analytical theory of current-driven magnetization dynamics for moderate amplitudes of oscillations. We observe that for higher oscillator amplitudes, the functional dependence of the oscillator integrated power as a function of frequency is not a single-valued function and can be described numerically via introduction of nonlinear oscillator power. For a range of currents in the regular regime, the oscillator spectral linewidth is a linear function of temperature. In the chaotic regime found at large current values, the linewidth is not described by the analytical theory. In this regime we observe the oscillator linewidth broadening, which originates from sudden jumps of frequency of the oscillator arising from random domain wall nucleation and propagation through the sample. This paper introduces an oscillator scheme based on the oscillations of magnetic domain walls due to spin-polarized currents, where the current is injected perpendicular to the sample plane in a localized part of a nanowire. Depending on the geometrical and physical characteristic of the system, we identify two different dynamical regimes (auto-oscillations) when an out-of-plane external field is applied. The first regime is characterized by nucleation of domain walls (DWs) below the current injection site and the propagation of those up to the end of the nanowire, we also found an oscillation frequency larger than 5GHz with a linear dependence on the applied current density. This simple system can be used as a tuneable steady-state domain wall oscillator. We have employed complete micromagnetic simulations to analyze dc current driven self-oscillations of a vortex core in a spin-valve nanopillar in a perpendicular field by including the coupled effect of the spin-torque and the magnetostatic field computed self-consistently for the entire spin-valve. The vortex in the thicker nanomagnet moves along a quasi-elliptical trajectory that expands with applied current, resulting in blue-shifting of the frequency, while the magnetization of the thinner nanomagnet is non-uniform due to the bias current. We report single-shot measurements of resistance versus time for thermally assisted spin-torque-driven switching in magnetic tunnel junctions. We achieve sufficient sensitivity to resolve the resistance signals leading up to switching, including the variations between individual switching events. Analyses of pre-switching thermal fluctuations allow detailed measurements of coherence times and variations in magnetization precession amplitude. We find that with a small in-plane hard-axis magnetic field the magnetization dynamics are more spatially coherent than for the case of zero field., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

This paper describes a numerical experiment of magnetization switching driven by spin-polarized current in high-TMR magnetic tunnel junctions (TMR>100%). Differently from other works, the current density distribution throughout the cross-sectional area of the free-layer is here computed dinamically, by modeling the ferromagnet/insulator/ferromagnet trilayer as a series of parallel resistances. The validity of the main postulated hypothesis, which states that the current density vector is perpendicular to the sample plane, has been verified by numerically solving the Poisson equation. Our results show that the nonuniform current density distribution is a source of asymmetry for the switching. This paper shows that the presence of two dynamical regimes, characterized by different precessional-axis, is the origin of the non-monotonic behavior of the output integrated power for large-amplitude magnetization precession driven by spin-polarized current in nanoscale exchange biased spin-valves. In particular, at the transition current between those two regimes exists an abruptly loss in the integrated output power. After the introduction of a time-frequency analysis of magnetization dynamics based on the wavelet transform, we performed a numerical experiment by means of micromagnetic simulations. In this work we formulate a generalized theoretical model to describe the nonlinear dynamics observed in combined frequency-amplitude modulators whose characteristic parameters exhibit a nonlinear dependence on the input modulating signal. The derived analytical solution may give a satisfactory explanation of recent laboratory observations on magnetic spin-transfer oscillators and fully agrees with results of micromagnetic calculations. We perform 3D micromagnetic simulations of current-driven magnetization dynamics in nanoscale exchange biased spin-valves that take account of (i) back action of spin-transfer torque on the pinned layer, (ii) non-linear damping and (iii) random thermal torques. Our simulations demonstrate that all these factors significantly impact the current-driven dynamics and lead to a better agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental results. In particular, we observe that, at a non-zero temperature and a sub-critical current, the magnetization dynamics exhibits nonstationary behaviour in which two independent persistent oscillatory modes are excited which compete for the angular momentum supplied by spin-polarized current.
