Purpose: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) presents a multifaceted etiopathogenesis involving ischemic, inflammatory, and genetic components. This study investigates the correlation between ocular hemodynamics, scleral rigidity (SR), and plasma endothelin-1 (ET1) levels in treatment-naive patients with asymmetrical AMD. Patients and Methods: This study included 20 treatment-naive patients (12 females and 8 males) with an average age of 76.4 ± 3.7 years, who presented with AMD with neovascular membrane formation (nAMD) in one eye, and intermediate grade 2 AMD (iAMD) in the other eye. The control group consisted of 20 healthy subjects (13 females and 7 males) with a mean age of 74.7 ± 3.9 years. All patients and healthy controls underwent color Doppler imaging (i) of the ophthalmic artery (OA), short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCAs), and central retinal artery (CRA); Plasma ET-1 levels were measured for all patients and healthy subjects. Corneal biomechanics were assessed using an Ocular Response Analyzer and two indices were obtained: corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF). Results: Results showed reduced blood flow velocities and increased resistance indices in AMD eyes, particularly affecting the short posterior ciliary arteries. According to mechanical theory, ARMD eyes exhibited elevated scleral rigidity and corneal resistance factor compared to controls, with a notable rise in SR in neovascular AMD (nAMD) eyes. As per the chronic subacute inflammation theory, plasma ET-1 levels were significantly higher in AMD patients, correlating with abnormal SPCAs blood flow and increased resistance indices. Conclusion: Findings suggest a multifactorial etiology of AMD involving an increase of ET-1 plasma levels with biomechanic damages of corneal and scleral tissue in nAMD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of our study was to evaluate the functionality of the magnocellular–Y (M–Y) retinal ganglion cells in adult dyslexic subjects using steady-state pattern electroretinogram and frequency doubling perimetry. Methods: Ten patients with dyslexia (7 females and 3 males), mean age 28.7 ± 5.9 years, and 10 subjects without dyslexia (6 females and 4 males), mean age 27.8 ± 4.1 years, were enrolled in the study and underwent both steady-state pattern-electroretinogram examination and frequency doubling perimetry. Results: There was a significant difference in the amplitude of the steady-state pattern electroretinogram of the dyslexic group and the healthy controls (0.610±0.110 μV vs 1.250±0.296 μV; p=0.0001). Furthermore, in the dyslexic group we found a significant difference between the right eye and the left eye (0.671±0.11 μV vs 0.559±0.15 μV; p=0.001). With frequency doubling perimetry, the pattern standard deviation index increased in dyslexic eyes compared to healthy controls (4.40±0.81 dB vs 2.99±0.35 dB; p=0.0001) and in the left eye versus the right eye of the dyslexic group (4.43±1.10 dB vs 3.66±0.96 dB; p=0.031). There was a correlation between the reduction in the wave amplitude of the pattern electroretinogram and the simultaneous increase in the pattern standard deviation values (r=0.80; p=0.001). This correlation was also found to be present in the left eye (r=0.93; p

PM is associated with myopic maculopathy (MM). The ATN classification describes all the aspects of MM which regroups atrophic, tractional and neovascular consequences to the sclera, choroid and retina of highly myopic eyes. The advent of OCT allowed to define the ultrastructural characteristics of the tractional changes in MM, described by the term myopic traction maculopathy (MTM). They include foveoschisis/maculoschisis/retinoschisis (FS/MS/RS), retinal/foveal detachment (RD/FD), lamellar macular holes (LMH) and full-thickness macular holes (FTMH) with or without RD (MHRD). The MTM staging system (MSS) describes all foveal and retinal changes related to MTM and their natural history interpreting them as different stages of a single progressive disorder. The management of MTM can be just observation for the earliest cases with good vision or surgery for the severe stages with vision loss. There are two possible surgical approaches: ab externo, that acts on the alteration of the scleral shape and includes posterior scleral reinforcement and macular buckle. Ab interno, that targets the alteration of the foveal profile and consists in pars plana vitrectomy with removal of all the epiretinal tractions, maneuvers on the internal limiting membrane, and the use of intravitreal tamponade and laser. As they target two different sides of the same pathology, the two techniques have to be selected on the base of the MTM stage, single or combined. Keywords: pathological myopia, posterior staphyloma, retinal detachment, full thickness macular hole, macular buckle, pars plana vitrectomy, myopic traction maculopathy

- Abstract
Background/objectives: To compare the number of eye surgical procedures performed in Italy in the 2 months following the beginning of lockdown (study period) because of COVID-19 epidemic with those performed in the two earlier months of the same year (intra-year control) and in the period of 2019 corresponding to the lockdown (inter-year control). Methods: Retrospective analysis of surgical procedures carried out at 39 Academic hospitals. A distinction was made between elective and urgent procedures. Intravitreal injections were also considered. Percentages for all surgical procedures and incidence rate ratios (IRR) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) events were calculated. A pvalue <0.05 was considered significant. Results: A total of 20,886 versus 55,259 and 56,640 patients underwent surgery during the lockdown versus intra-and inter-year control periods, respectively. During the lockdown, only 70% of patients for whom an operation/intravitreal injection was recommended, finally underwent surgery; the remaining patients did not attend because afraid of getting infected at the hospital (23%), taking public transportation (6.5%), or unavailable swabs (0.5%). Elective surgeries were reduced by 96.2% and 96.4%, urgent surgeries by 49.7% and 50.2%, and intravitreal injections by 48.5% and 48.6% in the lockdown period in comparison to intra-year and inter-year control periods, respectively. IRRs for RRDs during lockdown dropped significantly in comparison with intra- and inter-year control periods (CI: 0.65–0.80 and 0.61–0.75, respectively, p< 0.001 for both). Conclusion: This study provides a quantitative analysis of the reduction of eye surgical procedures performed in Italy because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the safety of intracameral cefuroxime in combined vitrectomy and phacoemulsification for cataract and various vitreoretinal disease. Methods: The charts of 152 patients who underwent combined phacoemulsification, intraocular lens implant and pars plana vitrectomy were reviewed. The final tamponade was chosen among fluid, air, gas or silicone oil, based on the requirement of each single case. Patients were operated on by four different surgeons. At the end of surgery, 1 mg/0.1 mL of intracameral cefuroxime (Aprokam) was administered. Results: The mean follow-up was 6.26±7.78 months (range 1–12). No retinal complication, such as retinal infarction or hemorrhages were observed. No acute macular serous detachment and no new intraretinal cysts were noted, in those patients who received optical coherence tomography within the fifth day after surgery. No endophthalmitis was recorded. Conclusion: Intracameral cefuroxime, at the end of combined phacoemulsification and pars plana vitrectomy, is safe as it has no toxicity on the retina and maybe could be considered effective in endophthalmitis prevention. Due to the relatively small number of patients, further studies are advisable.Summary statement: The standard dose of intracameral cefuroxime at the end of combined phacoemulsification and pars plana vitrectomy has no toxic effects on the retina. The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), in addition to its faunal interest in the western Mediterranean, is a relevant species which in several European countries is the basis of a meat-oriented, industrial livestock subsector, while in many developing countries rabbits are raised under alternative systems aimed at income integration and food security. In addition to meat production, other productive orientations exist that generate a variety of rabbit production systems. This paper reviews the ethology of maternal behaviour of the breeding doe and her litter, including its endocrine regulation, both in wild animal and in industrial and alternative farming systems, and its relation to management factors, productivity and performance as well as the welfare of the species. It also discusses the implications of the regulations concerning animal welfare on housing, management and satisfaction of behavioural needs of breeding does and their litters, which in some countries tend to provide more space and environmental enrichment in cages

Costantino Schiavi, Filippo Tassi, Alessandro Finzi, Ernesto Strobbe, Mauro Cellini Department of Experimental, Diagnostic, and Specialty Medicine, Ophthalmology Service, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy Background: Steady-state pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and frequency doubling technology (FDT) perimetry can be used to selectively investigate the activity of the M-Y ganglion cells in adult anisometropic amblyopes. Methods: Fifteen normal subjects (mean 27.8±4.1 years) and 15 adults with anisometropic amblyopia (mean 28.7±5.9 years) were analyzed using steady-state PERG and FDT. Results: The amplitude of steady-state PERG was significantly different not only among the control group and both the amblyopic eye (P=0.0001) and the sound eye group (P=0.0001), but also between the latter two groups (P=0.006). The difference in FDT mean deviation was statistically significant not only between the control group and amblyopic eye group (P=0.0002), but also between the control group and the sound eye group (P=0.0009). The FDT pattern standard deviation was significantly higher in the control group rather than in the amblyopic eye (P=0.0001) or the sound eye group (P=0.0001). A correlation was found between the reduction in PERG amplitude and the increase in FDT-pattern standard deviation index not only in amblyopic (P=0.0025) and sound (P=0.0023) eyes, but also in the healthy control group (P=0.0001). Conclusion: These data demonstrate that in anisometropic amblyopia, there is an abnormal functionality of a subgroup of the magnocellular ganglion cells (M-Y), and the involvement of these cells, together with the parvocellular pathway, may play a key role in the clinical expression of the disease. - Abstract
To assess the sex influence on sniffing behavior of rabbits, sets of three rabbits each were located for seven days in contiguous cages divided by a metal wall with holes that prevented the neighboring rabbits to see each other. A buck was located in the central cage, with a doe at each side. Rabbit behavior was video recorded to observe animals sniffing with the muzzle near the wall. The bucks displayed an olfactory preference towards one of the two does, which decreased in few days. The significance was p < 0.01 for the first three days, it lowered to p < 0.05 in the next three days and from the seventh, it turned insignificant (p > 0.05). The interest of bucks towards the does was also characterized by a frenetic scratching of the separation wall, contemporary with intense sniffing, displayed only for the first 35 min of the first day. The sniffing behavior of does at the central cage housing the male was not so marked as in bucks, and it progressively changed across the trial (p < 0.01). In conclusion, rabbits establish a transitory sex-oriented olfactory relationship with the conspecifics housed in contiguous cages, which looks no longer necessary once the rabbits have recognized each other.

There has hardly been done any research into adoption of kits in alternative rabbit farms with few does, where the occurrence of few grouped births makes it difficult to standardize litter size. The objective of this study was to research into the effect of litter standardization to different numbers of kits on mortality of kits in an alternative rearing system of Leprino of Viterbo breed in semi-underground cells. Three hundred and fourteen litters, obtained between February 2006 and May 2007 on an Italian commercial farm, were the experimental units. The number of kits after birth, of kits donated or received in adoption, of kits in litter after adoption, and mortality until weaning were recorded. An analysis of variance and contingency tables were made, calculating chi-square tests. Fifty-eight point six percent of the litters were standardized, 53.8 % of them receiving kits. The most frequent litter size after standardization was 8 kits; also there were litters to 7 and 9 kits. There were no differences (p>0.05) in pre-weaning mortality for any litter size after adoption, in proportion of litters weaning all the kits present after adoption, neither of those where one, two, three, or more kits die during lactation, with respect to the litters having donated, received, or kept the same number of live-born kits. In alternative rabbit farms, it is viable to standardize the litters to different sizes, especially between 7 and 9 kits, without affecting their mortality.

Alessandro Finzi, Ernesto Strobbe, Filippo Tassi, Michela Fresina, Mauro Cellini Department of Specialized, Diagnostic and Experimental Medicine, Ophthalmology Service, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy Background: To assess the sensitivity and specificity of hemifield pattern electroretinogram (HF-PERG) for detecting early retinal ganglion cell (RGC) damage in ocular hypertensive (OH) patients. Methods: Fifty-two OH patients (mean age 56±9.6 years) with an intraocular pressure (IOP) >21 mmHg were assessed. All subjects underwent HF-PERG, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and frequency doubling technology (FDT) visual field. Results: OH patients showed a significant increase of peak-time of the N95 (P=0.027) compared to controls. The amplitude of the N95 of the lower and upper HF-PERG showed significant differences (P=0.037 and P=0.023, respectively) between the two groups. A significant intraocular (P=0.006) and interocular (P=0.018) asymmetry of N95 amplitude was found. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed a sensitivity of 93% for the N95 of the lower HF-PERG, whereas full-field pattern electroretinogram (PERG) N95 peak-time had a sensitivity of 88%. In OH patients, we found a thinning of OCT - retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), especially in the superior and inferior quadrant, although not statistically significant, and a significantly higher FDT pattern standard deviation (FDT-PSD; P=0.001). In the OCT-RNFL inferior quadrant, a sensitivity of 82% was recorded. Finally, the sensitivity of the FDT-PSD was 92%.Conclusion: Our study shows that HF-PERG is a very sensitive test for detecting early damage of the RGC. adopción de gazapos ,Leprino de Viterbo ,producción alternativa - Abstract
The effect of the cross-fostering after birth to heterogeneous numbers of kits by litter was studied in the alternative rabbit keeping system that bred the Leprino of Viterbo breed in outdoors underground cells. Fifty four per cent of the litters take part in the equalisation, 45% of them giving kits and the rest receiving kits. The most frequent litter size after equalisation was 8 kits, although many litters were equalised to 7 and between 9 kits, and another remained with litter sizes below 7 kits. There were no differences in the percentage of kits mortality until weaning for every litter size after equalisation, nor n the proportion of litters that weaned all the kits present after the equalisation, in function of the does had given kits, received kits, or remained with the same number of kits born alive. In conclusion, in alternative farms with a low number of does, in which often is not possible to do a precise equalisation of the litters after birth, it is viable to equalise efficiently the litters of the same or different bands to heterogeneous, but similar, litter sizes when required by the management circumstances.
