Abstract

This paper considers the possibility that abstract thinking and advanced synthesis skills might encourage extraterrestrial civilizations to accept communication with mankind on Earth. For this purpose, a notation not relying upon the use of alphabet and numbers is proposed, in order to denote just some basic geometric structures of current physical theories: vector fields, one-form fields, and tensor fields of arbitrary order. An advanced civilization might appreciate the way here proposed to achieve a concise description of electromagnetism and general relativity, and hence it might accept the challenge of responding to our signals. 9. Triple2Vec: Learning Triple Embeddings from Knowledge Graphs

Abstract

Graph embedding techniques allow to learn high-quality feature vectors from graph structures and are useful in a variety of tasks, from node classification to clustering. Existing approaches have only focused on learning feature vectors for the nodes in a (knowledge) graph. To the best of our knowledge, none of them has tackled the problem of embedding of graph edges, that is, knowledge graph triples. The approaches that are closer to this task have focused on homogeneous graphs involving only one type of edge and obtain edge embeddings by applying some operation (e.g., average) on the embeddings of the endpoint nodes. The goal of this paper is to introduce Triple2Vec, a new technique to directly embed edges in (knowledge) graphs. Trple2Vec builds upon three main ingredients. The first is the notion of line graph. The line graph of a graph is another graph representing the adjacency between edges of the original graph. In particular, the nodes of the line graph are the edges of the original graph. We show that directly applying existing embedding techniques on the nodes of the line graph to learn edge embeddings is not enough in the context of knowledge graphs. Thus, we introduce the notion of triple line graph. The second is an edge weighting mechanism both for line graphs derived from knowledge graphs and homogeneous graphs. The third is a strategy based on graph walks on the weighted triple line graph that can preserve proximity between nodes. Embeddings are finally generated by adopting the SkipGram model, where sentences are replaced with graph walks. We evaluate our approach on different real world (knowledge) graphs and compared it with related work.

14. From Community Detection to Community Deception

Abstract

The community deception problem is about how to hide a target community C from community detection algorithms. The need for deception emerges whenever a group of entities (e.g., activists, police enforcements) want to cooperate while concealing their existence as a community. In this paper we introduce and formalize the community deception problem. To solve this problem, we describe algorithms that carefully rewire the connections of C's members. We experimentally show how several existing community detection algorithms can be deceived, and quantify the level of deception by introducing a deception score. We believe that our study is intriguing since, while showing how deception can be realized it raises awareness for the design of novel detection algorithms robust to deception techniques.

Abstract

A map is an abstract visual representation of a region, taken from a given space, usually designed for final human consumption. Traditional cartography focuses on the mapping of Euclidean spaces by using some distance metric. In this paper we aim at mapping the Web space by leveraging its relational nature. We introduce a general mathematical framework for maps and an algebra and discuss the feasibility of maps suitable for interpretation not only by humans but also by machines.

Abstract

The massive semantic data sources linked in the Web of Data give new meaning to old features like navigation; introduce new challenges like semantic specification of Web fragments; and make it possible to specify actions relying on semantic data. In this paper we introduce a declarative language to face these challenges. Based on navigational features, it is designed to specify fragments of the Web of Data and actions to be performed based on these data. We implement it in a centralized fashion, and show its power and performance. 45. Community Deception or: How to Stop Fearing Community Detection Algorithms

Abstract

In this paper we research the community deception problem. Tackling this problem consists in developing techniques to hide a target community (C) from community detection algorithms. This need emerges whenever a group (e.g., activists, police enforcements, or network participants in general) want to observe and cooperate in a social network while avoiding to be detected. We introduce and formalize the community deception problem and devise an efficient algorithm that allows to achieve deception by identifying a certain number (?) of C's members connections to be rewired. Deception can be practically achieved in social networks like Facebook by friending or unfriending network members as indicated by our algorithm. We compare our approach with another technique based on modularity. By considering a variety of (large) real networks we provide a systematic evaluation of the robustness of community detection algorithms to deception techniques. Finally, we open some challenging research questions about the design of detection algorithms robust to deception techniques.

Abstract

The increasing number of Knowledge Graphs (KGs) available today calls for powerful query languages that can strike a balance between expressiveness and complexity of query evaluation, and that can be easily integrated into existing query processing infrastructures. We present Extended Property Paths (EPPs), a significant enhancement of Property Paths (PPs), the navigational core included in the SPARQL query language. We introduce the EPPs syntax, which allows to capture in a succinct way a larger class of navigational queries than PPs and other navigational extensions of SPARQL, and provide formal semantics. We describe a translation from non-recursive EPPs (nEPPs) into SPARQL queries and provide novel expressiveness results about the capability of SPARQL sub-languages to express navigational queries. We prove that the language of EPPs is more expressive than that of PPs; using EPPs within SPARQL allows to express things that cannot be expressed when only using PPs. We also study the expressiveness of SPARQL with EPPs in terms of reasoning capabilities. We show that SPARQL with EPPs is expressive enough to capture the main RDFS reasoning functionalities and describe how a query can be rewritten into another query enhanced with reasoning capabilities. We complement our contributions with an implementation of EPPs as the SPARQL-independent iEPPs language and an implementation of the translation of nEPPs into SPARQL queries. What sets our approach apart from previous research on querying KGs is the possibility to evaluate both nEPPs and SPARQL with nEPPs queries under the RDFS entailment regime on existing query processors.
