Abstract

We present 50-fs, single-shot measurements of the x-ray thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) from copper foils that have been shocked via nanosecond laser-ablation up to pressures above 135~GPa. We hence deduce the x-ray Debye-Waller (DW) factor, providing a temperature measurement. The targets were laser-shocked with the DiPOLE 100-X laser at the High Energy Density (HED) endstation of the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (EuXFEL). Single x-ray pulses, with a photon energy of 18 keV, were scattered from the samples and recorded on Varex detectors. Despite the targets being highly textured (as evinced by large variations in the elastic scattering), and with such texture changing upon compression, the absolute intensity of the azimuthally averaged inelastic TDS between the Bragg peaks is largely insensitive to these changes, and, allowing for both Compton scattering and the low-level scattering from a sacrificial ablator layer, provides a reliable measurement of $T/\Theta_D^2$, where $\Theta_D$ is the Debye temperature. We compare our results with the predictions of the SESAME 3336 and LEOS 290 equations of state for copper, and find good agreement within experimental errors. Abstract

We present in-situ x-ray diffraction and velocity measurements of Fe$_2$O$_3$ under laser shock compression at pressures between 38-116 GPa. None of the phases reported by static compression studies were observed. Instead, we observed an isostructural phase transition from $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ to a new $\alpha^\prime$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ phase at a pressure of 50-62 GPa. The $\alpha^\prime$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ phase differs from $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ by an 11% volume drop and a different unit cell compressibility. We further observed a two-wave structure in the velocity profile, which can be related to an intermediate regime where both $\alpha$ and $\alpha^\prime$ phases coexist. Density functional theory calculations with a Hubbard parameter indicate that the observed unit cell volume drop can be associated with a spin transition following a magnetic collapse., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The high-precision X-ray diffraction setup for work with diamond anvil cells (DACs) in interaction chamber 2 (IC2) of the High Energy Density instrument of the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser is described. This includes beamline optics, sample positioning and detector systems located in the multipurpose vacuum chamber. Concepts for pump-probe X-ray diffraction experiments in the DAC are described and their implementation demonstrated during the First User Community Assisted Commissioning experiment. X-ray heating and diffraction of Bi under pressure, obtained using 20 fs X-ray pulses at 17.8 keV and 2.2 MHz repetition, is illustrated through splitting of diffraction peaks, and interpreted employing finite element modeling of the sample chamber in the DAC.

Abstract

There is a direct relation between the composition of a host star and that of the planets orbiting around it. As such, the recent discovery of stars with unusual chemical composition, notably enriched in carbon instead of oxygen, support the existence of exoplanets with a chemistry dominated by carbides instead of oxides. Accordingly several studies have been recently conducted on the Si C binary system at high pressure and temperature. Nonetheless, the properties of carbides at the P T conditions of exoplanets interiors are still inadequately constrained, effectively hampering reliable planetary modeling. Here we present an in situ X ray diffraction study of the Si C binary system up to 200 GPa and 3500 K, significantly enlarging the pressure range explored by previous experimental studies. The large amount of collected data allows us to properly investigate the phase diagram and to refine the Clapeyron slope of the transition line from the zinc blende to the rock salt structure. Furthermore the pressure volume temperature equation of state are provided for the high pressure phase, characterized by low compressibility and thermal expansion. Our results are used to model idealized C rich exoplanets of end members composition. In particular, we derived mass radius relations and performed numerical simulations defining rheological parameters and initial conditions which lead to onset of convection in such SiC planets. We demonstrate that if restrained to silicate rich mantle compositions, the interpretation of mass radius relations may underestimate the interior diversity of exoplanets., Comment: 30 Pages, 8 Figures

Abstract

X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) sources coupled to high-power laser systems offer an avenue to study the structural dynamics of materials at extreme pressures and temperatures. The recent commissioning of the DiPOLE 100-X laser on the high energy density (HED) instrument at the European XFEL represents the state-of-the-art in combining x-ray diffraction with laser compression, allowing for compressed materials to be probed in unprecedented detail. Here, we report quantitative structural measurements of molten Sn compressed to 85(5) GPa and ∼ 3500 K. The capabilities of the HED instrument enable liquid density measurements with an uncertainty of ∼ 1 % at conditions which are extremely challenging to reach via static compression methods. We discuss best practices for conducting liquid diffraction dynamic compression experiments and the necessary intensity corrections which allow for accurate quantitative analysis. We also provide a polyimide ablation pressure vs input laser energy for the DiPOLE 100-X drive laser which will serve future users of the HED instrument.

Abstract

Experiments accessing extreme conditions at x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) involve rapidly evolving conditions of temperature. Here, we report time-resolved, direct measurements of temperature using spectral streaked optical pyrometry of x-ray and optical laser-heated states at the High Energy Density instrument of the European XFEL. This collection of typical experiments, coupled with numerical models, outlines the reliability, precision, and meaning of time dependent temperature measurements using optical emission at XFEL sources. Dynamic temperatures above 1500 K are measured continuously from spectrally- and temporally-resolved thermal emission at 450–850 nm, with time resolution down to 10–100 ns for 1–200 μ s streak camera windows, using single shot and integrated modes. Targets include zero-pressure foils free-standing in air and in vacuo, and high-pressure samples compressed in diamond anvil cell multi-layer targets. Radiation sources used are 20-fs hard x-ray laser pulses at 17.8 keV, in single pulses or 2.26 MHz pulse trains of up to 30 pulses, and 250-ns infrared laser single pulses. A range of further possibilities for optical measurements of visible light in x-ray laser experiments using streak optical spectroscopy are also explored, including for the study of x-ray induced optical fluorescence, which often appears as background in thermal radiation measurements. We establish several scenarios where combined emissions from multiple sources are observed and discuss their interpretation. Challenges posed by using x-ray lasers as non-invasive probes of the sample state are addressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new diamond anvil cell experimental approach has been implemented at the European x-ray Free Electron Laser, combining pulsed laser heating with MHz x-ray diffraction. Here, we use this setup to determine liquidus temperatures under extreme conditions, based on the determination of time-resolved crystallization. The focus is on a Fe-Si-O ternary system, relevant for planetary cores. This time-resolved diagnostic is complemented by a finite-element model, reproducing temporal temperature profiles measured experimentally using streaked optical pyrometry. This model calculates the temperature and strain fields by including (i) pressure and temperature dependencies of material properties, and (ii) the heat-induced thermal stress, including feedback effect on material parameter variations. Making our model more realistic, these improvements are critical as they give 7000 K temperature differences compared to previous models. Laser intensities are determined by seeking minimal deviation between measured and modeled temperatures. Combining models and streak optical pyrometry data extends temperature determination below detection limit. The presented approach can be used to infer the liquidus temperature by the appearance of SiO 2 diffraction spots. In addition, temperatures obtained by the model agree with crystallization temperatures reported for Fe-Si alloys. Our model reproduces the planetary relevant experimental conditions, providing temperature, pressure, and volume conditions. Those predictions are then used to determine liquidus temperatures at experimental timescales where chemical migration is limited. This synergy of novel time-resolved experiments and finite-element modeling pushes further the interpretation capabilities in diamond anvil cell experiments.

Abstract

Results of the 2018 commissioning and experimental campaigns of the new High Power Laser Facility on the Energy-dispersive X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (ED-XAS) beamline ID24 at the ESRF are presented. The front-end of the future laser, delivering 15 J in 10 ns, was interfaced to the beamline. Laser-driven dynamic compression experiments were performed on iron oxides, iron alloys and bismuth probed by online time-resolved XAS.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, we investigated phase transformations of CaTiO$_3$ perovskite using X-ray diffraction at high pressure and high temperature up to 170 GPa and 4500 K in a laser-heated diamond-anvil cell. We report a high-pressure dissociation of CaTiO$_3$ into CaO-B2 and CaTi2O5 with a monoclinic P2/m structure, instead of the expected transformation of the orthorhombic distorted perovskite structure into a post-perovskite phase. We propose that this transition may be favored by the B1 to B2 phase change of CaO at around 60 GPa. In order to provide additional information on the high pressure properties of CaTiO$_3$ perovskite, we measured its melting temperature using CO$_2$ laser heated diamond anvil cell up to 55 GPa yielding a fit of the melting curve to a Kraut-Kennedy empirical law according to: Tm (K) = 2188 ∗ [1 + 4.23 ∗ (ΔV/V0)]. To provide some further insight into the thermodynamic properties of CaTiO$_3$, we determined the P-V-T equation of state of the orthorhombic mineral perovskite, fitted by using a third order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state and a Berman thermal expansion model. The fit of the data yields to K0 = 180.6(4) GPa, K′0 = 4 (fixed), ∂K/∂T = −0.022(1) GPa K−1, α1 = 3.25(5) x 10−5 K−1, α2 = 1.3(1) x 10−8 K−2

Abstract

The high-precision X-ray diffraction setup for work with diamond anvil cells (DACs) in interaction chamber 2 (IC2) of the High Energy Density instrument of the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser is described. This includes beamline optics, sample positioning and detector systems located in the multipurpose vacuum chamber. Concepts for pump–probe X-ray diffraction experiments in the DAC are described and their implementation demonstrated during the First User Community Assisted Commissioning experiment. X-ray heating and diffraction of Bi under pressure, obtained using 20 fs X-ray pulses at 17.8 keV and 2.2 MHz repetition, is illustrated through splitting of diffraction peaks, and interpreted employing finite element modeling of the sample chamber in the DAC.

Abstract

Deep inside planets extreme material states can be found: pressures up to hundreds of GPa and temperatures up to thousands and ten thousands of K are common. From all planets, the Earth is most investigated, but open questions e.g. regarding the crystallographic structure and composition of the core material remain. The Earth’s core consists mostly of iron, supposedly in an alloy with a substantial amount of nickel. However, results from seismological studies suggest the presence of lighter elements (like H, C, O ,Si and S), too. Not only for geophysics but also for modelling terrestrial planets found in extrasolar systems, the study of the high-pressure high-temperature phase diagram of iron and its alloys is of importance. Bright X-ray sources in combination with high-power optical laser provide unique possibilities for creating and probing such extreme material states and their properties in the laboratory. In 2018, the High Power Laser Facility (HPLF) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) has started to be established. High quality X-ray absorption spectroscopy of dynamically compressed matter together with additional shock diagnostics will give insight into structural and electronic changes of the material as well as will give information about generated temperatures and pressures. This talk presents results from first commissioning experiments at this new outstanding facility, where laser shock compressed high-energy-density states of iron and its alloys with nickel and silicon have been investigated via single-shot X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the iron K edge.

Abstract

We report in situ structural measurements of shock‐compressed single crystal orthoenstatite up to 337 ± 55 GPa on the Hugoniot, obtained by coupling ultrafast X‐ray diffraction to laser‐driven shock compression. Shock compression induces a disordering of the crystalline structure evidenced by the appearance of a diffuse X‐ray diffraction signal at nanosecond timescales at 80 ± 13 GPa on the Hugoniot, well below the equilibrium melting pressure (>170 GPa). The formation of bridgmanite and post‐perovskite have been indirectly reported in microsecond‐scale plate‐impact experiments. Therefore, we interpret the high‐pressure disordered state we observed at nanosecond scale as an intermediate structure from which bridgmanite and post‐perovskite crystallize at longer timescales. This evidence of a disordered structure of MgSiO₃ on the Hugoniot indicates that the degree of polymerization of silicates is a key parameter to constrain the actual thermodynamics of shocks in natural environments.

Abstract

Properties of liquid silicates under high-pressure and high- temperature conditions are critical for modeling the dynamics and solidification mechanisms of the magma ocean in the early Earth, as well as for constraining entrainment of melts in the mantle and in the present-day core–mantle boundary. Here we present in situ structural measurements by X-ray diffraction of selected amorphous silicates compressed statically in diamond anvil cells (up to 157 GPa at room temperature) or dynamically by laser-generated shock com- pression (up to 130 GPa and 6,000 K along the MgSiO3 glass Hugo- niot). The X-ray diffraction patterns of silicate glasses and liquids reveal similar characteristics over a wide pressure and temperature range. Beyond the increase in Si coordination observed at 20 GPa, we find no evidence for major structural changes occurring in the silicate melts studied up to pressures and temperatures exceeding Earth’s core mantle boundary conditions. This result is supported by molecular dynamics calculations. Our findings reinforce the widely used assumption that the silicate glasses studies are appropriate structural analogs for understanding the atomic arrangement of silicate liquids at these high pressures.

Abstract

There is a direct relation between the composition of a host star and that of the planets orbiting around it. As such, the recent discovery of stars with unusual chemical composition, notably enriched in carbon instead of oxygen, supports the existence of exoplanets with a chemistry dominated by carbides instead of oxides. Accordingly, several studies have been recently conducted on the Si–C binary system at high pressure and temperature. Nonetheless, the properties of carbides at the pressure‐temperature conditions of exoplanets interiors are still inadequately constrained, effectively hampering reliable planetary modeling. Here we present an in situ X‐ray diffraction study of the Si–C binary system up to 200 GPa and 3,500 K, significantly enlarging the pressure range explored by previous experimental studies. The large amount of collected data allows us to properly investigate the phase diagram and to refine the Clapeyron slope of the transition line from the zinc blende to the rock salt structure. Furthermore, the pressure‐volume‐temperature equation of state is provided for the high‐pressure phase, characterized by low compressibility and thermal expansion. Our results are used to model idealized C‐rich exoplanets of end‐members composition. In particular, we derived mass‐radius relations and performed numerical simulations defining rheological parameters and initial conditions which lead to onset of convection in such SiC planets. We demonstrate that if restrained to silicate‐rich mantle compositions, the interpretation of mass‐radius relations may underestimate the interior diversity of exoplanets.

Abstract

A number of laser facilities coming on–line all over the world promise the capability of high–power laser experiments with shot repetition rates between 1 and 10 Hz. Target availability and technical issues related to the interaction environment could become a bottleneck for the exploitation of such facilities. In this paper, we report on target needs for three different classes of experiments: dynamic compression physics, electron transport and isochoric heating and laser–driven particle and radiation sources. We also review some of the most challenging issues in target fabrication and high repetition rate operation. Finally, we discuss current target supply strategies and future perspectives to establish a sustainable target provision infrastructure for advanced laser facilities.

Abstract

International audience; The fate of carbonates in the Earth's mantle plays a key role in the geodynamical carbon cycle. Although iron is a major component of the Earth's lower mantle, the stability of Fe-bearing carbonates has rarely been studied. Here we present experimental results on the stability of Fe-rich carbonates at pressures ranging from 40 to 105 GPa and temperatures of 1450-3600 K, corresponding to depths within the Earth's lower mantle of about 1000-2400 km. Samples of iron oxides and iron-magnesium oxides were loaded into CO2 gas and laser heated in a diamond-anvil cell. The nature of crystalline run products was determined in situ by X-ray diffraction, and the recovered samples were studied by analytical transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. We show that Fe-(II) is systematically involved in redox reactions with CO2 yielding to Fe-(III)-bearing phases and diamonds. We also report a new Fe-(III)-bearing high-pressure phase resulting from the transformation of FeCO3 at pressures exceeding 40 GPa. The presence of both diamonds and an oxidized C-bearing phase suggests that oxidized and reduced forms of carbon might coexist in the deep mantle. Finally, the observed reactions potentially provide a new mechanism for diamond formation at great depth.

Abstract

International audience; n situ X-ray diffraction experiments have been conducted using the Paris-Edinburgh press to study the Fe-FeS eutectic liquid structure from 3 to 17 GPa near the melting temperature. The eutectic temperature is steadily decreasing over the studied pressure range. The liquid structure evolves discontinuously towards a compact structure, with a non-uniform contraction at pressures between 13 and 17 GPa. We show that this evolution may be correlated to the Fe-S-Si miscibility gap closure (Sanloup, C., Fei, Y., Closure of the Fe-S-Si liquid miscibility gap at high pressure, Phys. Earth Planet. Inter. 147 (2004) 57.) and the magnetic transition observed in Fe3S compound (Lin, J.F., Fei, Y., Sturhahn, W., Zhao, J., Mao, H.K., Hemley, R.J., Magnetic transition and sound velocities of Fe3S at high pressure: implications for Earth and planetary cores, Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 226 (2004) 33-40.). The occurrence of such structural change in liquids Fe-alloys show that the extrapolation of their physical properties up to Earth's core pressure might not be relevant. As Fe-S liquid alloy acquires a compact structure close to that of pure liquid iron at high pressure, sulfur could be considered as one of the possible light element for the Earth's core from a pure elastic point of view. In addition, this structural modification could affect the partitioning coefficients of elements between liquid silicates and S-bearing liquid metallic phase.
