Objectives: Muscle and bone tissue are interrelated throughout their developmental processes via paracrine and endocrine pathways. Osteosarcopenia has emerged with the growing data proving the high rate of simultaneous occurrence of sarcopenia and osteoporosis. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between osteoporosis, and muscle quality by grading the fatty infiltration in paraspinal muscles according to the Goutallier classification in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: Data of postmenopausal patients who underwent MRI for low back pain were analyzed retrospectively. Lumbar spine and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) were measured by using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Grade of paraspinal muscle fatty infiltration for each level of lumbar vertebrae including L1-L2, L2-L3, L3-L4, was evaluated separately according to Goutallier classification system. Results: A total of 91 postmenopausal women were included in the study. The mean age of the study population was 60.5 ± 11. Lumbar vertebrae L1-L4 total T-scores and BMD g/cm2 were lower in patients with higher grades of Goutallier classification (P = 0.031 and P = 0.023, respectively). The distribution of the severity of fatty degeneration was significantly higher in the osteoporosis/osteopenia group at all 3 disc levels. No significant correlation was observed between femoral neck BMD and paraspinal muscle fat infiltration. Conclusions: There is a strong relationship between osteoporosis of the lumbar spine and paraspinal muscle quality, which can be considered as a reflection of osteosarcopenia. The Goutailler classification can be an effective and easy method in the evaluation of muscle quality with MRI.

Amaç: Önceki çalışmalarımızda adipokinetik hormonun (AKH) farelerde antidepresan, anksiyolitik, analjezik etkilerini, nörotrofik faktörleri ve nörojenezi artırdığını gösterdik. Önceki çalışmamızda, AKH’nun sıçanlara intraperitoneal uygulanmasından sonra diğer çalışmalarla desteklendiği şekilde piroglutamil peptidleri içeren AKH metabolitlerinin kan-beyin bariyerini geçtiğini hipotez ettik. Low back pain increases with age and causes a burden of serious socio-economic adverse outcomes. Gender, age, vitamin D insufficiency, and obesity are some of the factors that are considered accountable for the etiology of low back pain, however, conflicting results are present in the literature regarding their effects on low back pain. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of pain duration, pain intensity, gender, and preventable risk factors including vitamin D and body mass index (BMI), on low back pain. File registration data of 274 patients (211 females, 63 males) were included in this retrospective study. Age, gender, pain intensity, BMI, and vitamin D levels were recorded. Patients aged 60 and over were considered as the geriatric group. We observed that higher Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores were significantly associated with increased BMI (p=0.007) and advanced age (p=0.049). The aim of this study was to investigate the locomotor activity and anxiety changes in acute and chronic exposure to cigarette smoke in mice. In the chronic exposure group, mice were exposed to the smoke of 10 cigarettes for 5 days a week, over 5 consecutive weeks. In the acute group, the mice were exposed to the smoke of 10 cigarettes in one day. Locomotor activity tests and plus-maze tests were performed to determine the locomotor activity and anxiety levels of these mice. In the chronic exposure group, comparing with the both acute exposure and the control groups all parameters tested including distance traveled ( p<0.001), velocity of locomotor activity test (p<0.001), percentage of entrance through the open arm (p<0.001), and the duration of staying in the open arm of the plus-maze test (p<0.001) were significantly decreased .It has been concluded that the chronic cigarette smoke exposure resulted in decreased locomotor activity and increased anxiety levels in mice.

Bu durum işletmeleri çeşitli kalite iyileştirme tekniklerinden yararlanmaya yönlendirmiştir. Altı Sigma başta olmak üzere çoğu kalite iyileştirme yöntemleri veri odaklı yaklaşımlar olup, bu yöntemlerin başarılı olmasının ilk şartı kullanılan verilerin güvenilir olmasıdır. Bu durum kalite iyileştirme çalışmalarında, ilk adım olarak verilerin elde edildiği ölçüm sistemlerinin güvenilirliğinden emin olunmasını gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmada, bir otobüs yedek parçasının ölçümünde kullanılan sistemin güvenilirliği iki farklı yöntem kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Her iki yönteme göre kullanılan ölçüm sisteminin kabul edilebilir seviyede yeterli olduğu fakat iyileştirme fırsatları içerdiği sonucuna varılmıştır.

The aim of this study was to develop a scale to measure the attitudes of the university academic and administrative staff and students toward sexual harassment and assault, and examine its psychometric properties. After the development of the item pool and examination of the content validity of the intended items, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and parallel analysis was conducted and Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was calculated collecting data from 150 participants (54.7% of female and 45.3% of male) for the initial version (comprised of 12 items) of the Attitudes Toward Sexual Harassment and Assault Scale (ATSHAS). In the second phase, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted with 354 participants (54% of female and 46% of male) for the revised version (10 items) of the ATSHAS. Additionally, Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was calculated with second sample. After developing the item pool, the completion of the first phase of the study took 5 months, and the second phase took 4 months. The final version of the ATSHAS consisting of nine items demonstrated sufficient psychometric properties for measuring attitudes toward sexual harassment and assault in the university environment.

Öz: Amaçlar: Antipsikotik ilaçların yaygın olarak cinsel işlev bozukluğu ile ilişkili olduğu bilinmektedir. Ancak atipik antipsikotik ilaçların bu etkilerine ilişkin çalışmalar oldukça sınırlıdır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, fare vas deferensinin serotonin (5-HT), noradrenalin (NA), adenozin trifosfat (ATP) ve potasyum klorür (KCl) ile indüklenen kasılmaları üzerine siyamemazin, blonanserin ve nemonaprid'in etkilerini araştırmaktır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Bu çalışmada erkek kendi içinde yetiştirilmiş fareler kullanılmıştır. Fareler rastgele deney gruplarına (n=7) şu şekilde ayrıldı: salin; siyamemazin 0,25 mg/kg; siyamemazin 0,50 mg/kg; blonanserin 0,5 mg / kg; blonanserin 1 mg/kg; nemonaprid 0,5 mg / kg; nemonaprid 1 mg / kg. Farelere, 21 gün boyunca ilaçlar intraperitoneal olarak uygulandı. 21 gün boyunca %0.9 salin alan fareler kontrol grubunu oluşturdu. 21 günlük tedaviden sonra, ilaçların etkileri, fare vas deferensinin epididimal ve prostatik bölümlerine 5-HT, NA, ATP ve KCl'nin neden olduğu kasılma tepkileri araştırıldı. Bulgular: Siyamemazin ve blonanserin ile tedavi edilen fare vas deferenslerinin hem epididimal ve hem de prostatik kısımlarında, 5-HT ile indüklenen kasılma tepkileri anlamlı bir şekilde arttı. Ayrıca, siyamemazin, blonanserin ve nemonaprid uygulanan fare vas deferenslerinin prostatik ve epididimal kısımları; NA, ATP, KCl ile indüklenen kasılmaları önemli ölçüde değiştirmedi. Sonuçlar: Bu sonuçlar, vas deferens'in serotonin kaynaklı kasılmalarının, kronik siyamemazin ve blonanserin tedavilerinden etkilendiğini, ancak nemonapridden etkilenmediğini gösterdi. Ancak bu ilaçların NA, ATP ve KCl ile indüklenen kasılmalar üzerinde önemli bir etkisi yoktu. Serotonerjik reseptörler, kronik ciamemazin ve blonanserin tedavisi gören farelerde vas deferens kasılmalarındaki değişikliklere katkıda bulunabilir. Bu nedenle, sonuçlarımız, siyamemazin ve blonanserin'in neden olduğu cinsel işlev bozukluğunun nedenlerinden birini açıklayabilir.

A short 12-item version of the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale--Short Form (CAAS-SF) was validated across three different age groups in the Turkish context. Scale scores demonstrated adequate to high internal consistency and 4-week test--retest reliability, good fit with the original four-factor model, factorial invariance across gender and age groups, strong convergence with the 24-item version, negative associations with trait anxiety and work stress, and positive associations with career decision self-efficacy. It was concluded that the Turkish version of the CAAS-SF appears to be a valid and reliable measure for assessing career adaptability and using it in career education and counseling process.

Objective: Frailty is a prevalent geriatric syndrome that can indicate mortality in the elderly. The aim of this study was to determine if there was an association between frailty and 4-year mortality in the community-dwelling Turkish older people. Materials and Methods: The Fried Frailty Index (FFI) and FRAIL scale data from the Kayseri Elderly Health Study were used. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to determine the association between frailty and mortality, as assessed by the FFI and FRAIL scales. Results: The 4-year mortality frequency was found at 7.2% (n=65/905).The gender-specific mortality was 2.4% (n=22) in females and 4.8% (n=43) in males. The frequency of mortality in the elderly aged ≥75 years was 12.8% (n=34/265), and in those aged 60–74 years, it was 4.8% (n=31/640). The frequency of mortality in the frail, pre-frail, and non-frail older people was 57.4%, 25.9%, and 16.7%, respectively, for the FFI. The corresponding frequency of mortality for the FRAIL scale was 20.6%, 54.0%, and 25.4%, respectively. In a multivariate analysis, male gender (OR 2.67, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.43–4.96) and being frail (OR 5.34, 95%CI 2.45–11.67) were significantly associated with 4-year mortality according to the FFI. Conclusion: Both the FFI and FRAIL scales may be significant predictors of 4-year mortality in the sample. However, the FFI may be considered as the strongest predictor for 4-year mortality, primarily in male gender.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between the rate of fluorine-18 (18F) fludeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake and CD38 and CD138 expression in myeloma cells in bone marrow and other clinical parameters in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Materials and Methods: Patients with the diagnosis of MM who underwent 18F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for initial staging were evaluated retrospectively. We analyzed a total of 42 patients (43-83 years old, mean: 64.4+-9.9). Hematological and biochemical tests including hemoglobin, hematocrit, C-reactive protein, β2-microglobulin, creatinine, albumin, calcium, lactate dehydrogenase, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were recorded. In bone marrow samples, plasma cell ratio and CD38 and CD138 immunohistochemical staining were evaluated. On PET/ CT images, mean standardized uptake values (SUVmean) of the right anterior and posterior iliac crest and right proximal femora were calculated. Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive disease commonly affecting the elderly. Among patients with PD (pwPD), those above 60 years old are considered to be at high risk of malnutrition. Weight loss is a common complaint in pwPD. Thus, we defined the risk factors for malnutrition in geriatric pwPD. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 66 pwPD above the age of 60 years. Socio-demographic features were recorded and comprehensive geriatric assessments were evaluated. Malnutrition was assessed using a mini-nutritional assessment questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements including body mass index, mid-upper arm circumference, and calf circumference (CC) were recorded. Results: Seven (10.6%) pwPD had malnutrition, 22 (33.3%) pwPD were at risk of malnutrition. Univariate logistic regression analysis results revealed that low CC, presence of dyskinesia, advanced Hoehn & Yahr stage, levodopa doses of ≥400 mg/day, and difficulty in swallowing (p=0.035, p=0.041, p=0.048, p=0.027 and p=0.007, respectively) were strongly related to malnutrition among the pwPD. Difficulty in swallowing was independently related to malnutrition in pwPD [odds ratio: 7.81 (confidence interval: 2.17-28.10), p=0.002]. Conclusion: PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the geriatric population and is likely to cause malnutrition because of several disabling symptoms in the progressive course of the disease, such as dysphagia. To avoid or delay poorer outcomes, clinicians should be careful to identify malnutrition with appropriate screening tools during follow-up of pwPD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between polypharmacy and the risk of recurrent falls and to assess the fall risk with different pharmacological groups of drugs. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, falls risk-increasing drugs were defined as cardiovascular drugs, analgesics, central nervous system drugs, endocrine drugs, and others. Falls were evaluated according to their presence during the past 12 months. Two or more falls were recorded as recurrent fallers. Results: Five hundred and eighteen participants had a mean age of 71.9 years (7.5) and 71.0% were female. While 87 (51.4%) participants fell once, 82 (48.5%) participants reported recurrent falls. Two hundred and eighty-eight (55.6%) participants had polypharmacy. The percentage of patients who used at least one potentially inappropriate mediation on admission, as defined by the Beers criteria, was 155 (29.9%). The determinants of the risk of recurrent falls were older age and use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-I) [odds ratio (OR) 1.05: 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.00-1.09 and OR 4.04: 95% CI 1.70-9.60, respectively]. Low handgrip strength (HGS) increased the risk of falls approximately 1.7 times (OR 1.69 95% CI 1.11-2.58). Conclusion: Although the polypharmacy rate of the participants was high, there was no significant relationship between polypharmacy and falling. However, we found low HGS, a component of sarcopenia, as a risk factor for falls, and use of ACE-I and older were risk factors for recurrent falls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To determine whether the use of implant-supported overdentures (IODs) with different attachments influences the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) scores in edentulous patients > 65 years of age. Materials and Methods: The MNA and GOHAI were administered to 54 edentulous patients > 65 years of age (mean age = 68.35 ± 4.1 years) before treatment (A) and 6 months after treatment (B): 10 with maxillary + mandibular conventional complete dentures (CDs); 10 with a maxillary conventional CD + mandibular magnetic-retained IOD; 12 with a maxillary conventional CD + mandibular ball-retained IOD; 12 with a maxillary conventional CD + mandibular Locatorretained IOD; and 10 with a maxillary conventional CD + mandibular bar-retained IOD. Statistical differences between treatment types were evaluated using one-way analysis of variance and paired-sample t tests. The correlation between MNA and GOHAI scores was determined using Pearson correlation analysis (α = .05). Results: The difference between mean GOHAI-A and GOHAI-B scores was statistically significant for each type of denture (P < .005). The difference between the mean MNA-A and MNA-B scores was statistically significant for all types of denture except for conventional CDs (P < .05). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between MNA and GOHAI scores (P < .01). Conclusion: Regardless of the type of denture used, treatment of edentulous geriatric patients is important for improving nutritional status and self-rated oral health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
