Feedbacks between evolution and ecology are ubiquitous, with ecological interactions determining which mutants are successful, and these mutants in turn modifying community structure. We study the evolutionary dynamics of several ecological models with overlapping niches, including consumer resource and Lotka-Volterra models. Evolution is assumed slow and extinctions are permanent, with ecological dynamics reaching a stable fixed point between introductions of invaders or mutants. When new strains are slowly added to the community, the ecosystem converges, after an initial evolutionary transient, to a diverse eco-evolutionary steady state. In this "Red Queen" phase of continual evolution, the biodiversity continues to turn over without the invasion probability of new variants getting any smaller. For resource-mediated interactions, the Red Queen phase obtains for any amount of asymmetry in the interactions between strains, and is robust to "general fitness" differences in the intrinsic growth rates of strains. Via a dynamical mean field theory framework valid for high-dimensional phenotype space, we analytically characterize the Red Queen eco-evolutionary steady state in a particular limit of model parameters. Scaling arguments enable a more general understanding of the steady state and evolutionary transients toward it. This work therefore establishes simple models of continual evolution in an ecological context without host-pathogen arms races, and points to the generality of Red Queen evolution. However, we also find other eco-evolutionary phases in simple models: For generalized Lotka-Volterra models with weakly asymmetric interactions an "oligarch" phase emerges in which the evolutionary dynamics continually slow down and a substantial fraction of the community's abundance condenses into a handful of slowly turning-over strains., Comment: 36 pages, 22 figures

The spreading of evolutionary novelties across populations is the central element of adaptation. Unless population are well-mixed (like bacteria in a shaken test tube), the spreading dynamics not only depends on fitness differences but also on the dispersal behavior of the species. Spreading at a constant speed is generally predicted when dispersal is sufficiently short-ranged. However, the case of long-range dispersal is unresolved: While it is clear that even rare long-range jumps can lead to a drastic speedup, it has been difficult to quantify the ensuing stochastic growth process. Yet such knowledge is indispensable to reveal general laws for the spread of modern human epidemics, which is greatly accelerated by aviation. We present a simple iterative scaling approximation supported by simulations and rigorous bounds that accurately predicts evolutionary spread for broad distributions of long distance dispersal. In contrast to the exponential laws predicted by deterministic "mean-field" approximations, we show that the asymptotic growth is either according to a power-law or a stretched exponential, depending on the tails of the dispersal kernel. More importantly, we provide a full time-dependent description of the convergence to the asymptotic behavior which can be anomalously slow and is needed even for long times. Our results also apply to spreading dynamics on networks with a spectrum of long-range links under certain conditions on the probabilities of long distance travel and are thus relevant for the spread of epidemics.

In large asexual populations, multiple beneficial mutations arise in the population, compete, interfere with each other, and accumulate on the same genome, before any of them fix. The resulting dynamics, although studied by many authors, is still not fully understood, fundamentally because the effects of fluctuations due to the small numbers of the fittest individuals are large even in enormous populations. In this paper, branching processes and various asymptotic methods for analyzing the stochastic dynamics are further developed and used to obtain information on fluctuations, time dependence, and the distributions of sizes of subpopulations, jumps in the mean fitness, and other properties. The focus is on the behavior of a broad class of models: those with a distribution of selective advantages of available beneficial mutations that falls off more rapidly than exponentially. For such distributions, many aspects of the dynamics are universal - quantitatively so for extremely large populations. On the most important time scale that controls coalescent properties and fluctuations of the speed, the dynamics is reduced to a simple stochastic model that couples the peak and the high-fitness "nose" of the fitness distribution. Positive selection distorts the structure of genealogies and hence alters patterns of genetic variation within a population. Most analyses of these distortions focus on the signatures of hitchhiking due to hard or soft selective sweeps at a single genetic locus. However, in linked regions of rapidly adapting genomes, multiple beneficial mutations at different loci can segregate simultaneously within the population, an effect known as clonal interference. This leads to a subtle interplay between hitchhiking and interference effects, which leads to a unique signature of rapid adaptation on genetic variation both at the selected sites and at linked neutral loci. Here, we introduce an effective coalescent theory (a "fitness-class coalescent") that describes how positive selection at many perfectly linked sites alters the structure of genealogies. We use this theory to calculate several simple statistics describing genetic variation within a rapidly adapting population, and to implement efficient backwards-time coalescent simulations which can be used to predict how clonal interference alters the expected patterns of molecular evolution., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

Adaptation often involves the acquisition of a large number of genomic changes which arise as mutations in single individuals. In asexual populations, combinations of mutations can fix only when they arise in the same lineage, but for populations in which genetic information is exchanged, beneficial mutations can arise in different individuals and be combined later. In large populations, when the product of the population size N and the total beneficial mutation rate U_b is large, many new beneficial alleles can be segregating in the population simultaneously. We calculate the rate of adaptation, v, in several models of such sexual populations and show that v is linear in NU_b only in sufficiently small populations. In large populations, v increases much more slowly as log NU_b. The prefactor of this logarithm, however, increases as the square of the recombination rate. This acceleration of adaptation by recombination implies a strong evolutionary advantage of sex.

In Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 035702 (2006) we introduced a class of kinetically constrained models which display a dynamical glass transition. We focused on a particular example: the "knights" model. As correctly pointed out by Jeng and Schwarz cond-mat/0612484, we overlooked some additional directed frozen structures of the knights model which are not simple directed percolation (DP) paths: these "thicker" directed structures lower the critical density. Here we argue that, nevertheless, the full directed processes are in the DP universality class and the T-junctions between perpendicular segments of these give rise to a jamming percolation transition with the universal properties discussed in our previous work. Moreover, we present other models for which all our previous results, included the value of the critical density, hold rigorously.

When beneficial mutations are rare, they accumulate by a series of selective sweeps. But when they are common, many beneficial mutations will occur before any can fix, so there will be many different mutant lineages in the population concurrently. In an asexual population, these different mutant lineages interfere and not all can fix simultaneously. In addition, further beneficial mutations can accumulate in mutant lineages while these are still a minority of the population. In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of such multiple mutations and the interplay between multiple mutations and interference between clones. These result in substantial variation in fitness accumulating within a single asexual population. The amount of variation is determined by a balance between selection, which destroys variation, and beneficial mutations, which create more. The behavior depends in a subtle way on the population parameters: the population size, the beneficial mutation rate, and the distribution of the fitness increments of the potential beneficial mutations. The mutation-selection balance leads to a continually evolving population with a steady-state fitness variation. This variation increases logarithmically with both population size and mutation rate and sets the rate at which the population accumulates beneficial mutations, which thus also grows only logarithmically with population size and mutation rate. These results imply that mutator phenotypes are less effective in larger asexual populations. The interplay of quantum fluctuations and dissipation in chains of mesoscopic superconducting grains is analyzed, and the results are also applied to nanowires. It is shown that in 1-d arrays of resistively shunted Josephson junctions, the superconducting-normal charge relaxation within the grains plays an important role. At zero temperature, two superconducting phases can exist, depending primarily on the strength of the dissipation. In the fully superconducting phase (FSC), each grain acts superconducting, and the coupling to the dissipative conduction is important. In the SC* phase, the dissipation is irrelevant at long wavelengths. The phase transitions between these two superconducting phases and the normal metallic phase may be either local or global, and possess rich and complex critical properties. These are inferred from both weak and strong coupling renormalization group analyses. At intermediate temperatures, near either superconductor-to-normal phase transition, there are regimes of super-metallic behavior, in which the resistivity first decreases gradually with decreasing temperature before eventually increasing as temperature is lowered further. The results on chains of Josephson junctions are extended to continuous superconducting nanowires and the subtle issue of whether these can exhibit an FSC phase is considered. A new class of lattice gas models with trivial interactions but constrained dynamics are introduced. These are proven to exhibit a dynamical glass transition: above a critical density, rho_c, ergodicity is broken due to the appearance of an infinite spanning cluster of jammed particles. The fraction of jammed particles is discontinuous at the transition, while in the unjammed phase dynamical correlation lengths and timescales diverge as exp[C(rho_c-rho)^(-mu)]. A possible phase in short-range spin glasses exhibiting infinitely many equilibrium states is proposed and characterized in real space. Experimental signatures in equilibrating systems measured with scanning probes are discussed. Some models with correlations in their exchange interactions are argued to exhibit this phase. The end-to-end energy - energy correlations of random transverse-field quantum Ising spin chains are computed using a generalization of an asymptotically exact real-space renormalization group introduced previously. Away from the critical point, the average energy - energy correlations decay exponentially with a correlation length that is the same as that of the spin - spin correlations. The typical correlations, however, decay exponentially with a characteristic length proportional to the square root of the primary correlation length. At the quantum critical point, the average correlations decay sub-exponentially as $\bar{C_{L}}\sim e^{-const\cdot L^{1/3}}$, whereas the typical correlations decay faster, as $\sim e^{-K\sqrt{L}}$, with $K$ a random variable with a universal distribution. The critical energy-energy correlations behave very similarly to the smallest gap, computed previously; this is explained in terms of the RG flow and the excitation structure of the chain. In order to obtain the energy correlations, an extension of the previously used methods was needed; here this was carried out via RG transformations that involve a sequence of unitary transformations., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Kob and Andersen's simple lattice models for the dynamics of structural glasses are analyzed. Although the particles have only hard core interactions, the imposed constraint that they cannot move if surrounded by too many others causes slow dynamics. On Bethe lattices a dynamical transition to a partially frozen phase occurs. In finite dimensions there exist rare mobile elements that destroy the transition. At low vacancy density, $v$, the spacing, $\Xi$, between mobile elements diverges exponentially or faster in $1/v$. Within the mobile elements, the dynamics is intrinsically cooperative and the characteristic time scale diverges faster than any power of $1/v$ (although slower than $\Xi$). A model system consisting of a mesoscopic superconducting grain coupled by Josephson junctions to two macroscopic superconducting electrodes is studied. We focus on the effects of ohmic dissipation caused by resistive shunts and superconducting-normal charge relaxation within the grain. As the temperature is lowered, the behavior crosses over from uncoupled Josephson junctions, similar to situations analyzed previously, to strongly interacting junctions. The crossover temperature is related to the energy-level spacing of the grain and is of the order of the inverse escape time from the grain. In the limit of zero temperature, the two-junction system exhibits five distinct quantum phases, including a novel superconducting state with localized Cooper pairs on the grain but phase coherence between the leads due to Cooper pair cotunneling processes. In contrast to a single junction, the transition from the fully superconducting to fully normal phases is found to be controlled by an intermediate coupling fixed point whose critical exponents vary continuously as the resistances are changed. The model is analyzed via two component sine-Gordon models and related Coulomb gases that provide effective low temperature descriptions in both the weak and the strong Josephson coupling limits. The complicated phase diagram is consistent with symmetries of the two component sine-Gordon models, which include weak to strong coupling duality and permutation triality. The dynamics of an elastic medium driven through a random medium by a small applied force is investigated in the low-temperature limit where quantum fluctuations dominate. The motion proceeds via tunneling of segments of the manifold through barriers whose size grows with decreasing driving force $f$. In the limit of small drive, at zero-temperature the average velocity has the form $v\propto\exp[-{\rm const.}/\hbar^{\alpha} f^{\mu}]$. For strongly dissipative dynamics, there is a wide range of forces where the dissipation dominates and the velocity--force characteristics takes the form $v\propto\exp[-S(f)/\hbar]$, with $S(f)\propto 1/ f^{(d+2\zeta)/(2-\zeta)}$ the action for a typical tunneling event, the force dependence being determined by the roughness exponent $\zeta$ of the $d$-dimensional manifold. This result agrees with the one obtained via simple scaling considerations. Surprisingly, for asymptotically low forces or for the case when the massive dynamics is dominant, the resulting quantum creep law is {\it not} of the usual form with a rate proportional to $\exp[-S(f)/\hbar]$; rather we find $v\propto \exp\{-[S(f)/\hbar]^2\}$ corresponding to $\alpha=2$ and $\mu= 2(d+2\zeta-1)/(2-\zeta)$, with $\mu/2$ the naive scaling exponent for massive dynamics. Our analysis is based on the quasi-classical Langevin approximation with a noise obeying the quantum fluctuation--dissipation theorem. The many space and time scales involved in the dynamics are treated via a functional renormalization group analysis related to that used previously to treat the classical dynamics of such systems. A model of an elastic manifold driven through a random medium by an applied force F is studied focussing on the effects of inertia and elastic waves, in particular {\it stress overshoots} in which motion of one segment of the manifold causes a temporary stress on its neighboring segments in addition to the static stress. Such stress overshoots decrease the critical force for depinning and make the depinning transition hysteretic. We find that the steady state velocity of the moving phase is nevertheless history independent and the critical behavior as the force is decreased is in the same universality class as in the absence of stress overshoots: the dissipative limit which has been studied analytically. To reach this conclusion, finite-size scaling analyses of a variety of quantities have been supplemented by heuristic arguments. If the force is increased slowly from zero, the spectrum of avalanche sizes that occurs appears to be quite different from the dissipative limit. After stopping from the moving phase, the restarting involves both fractal and bubble-like nucleation. Hysteresis loops can be understood in terms of a depletion layer caused by the stress overshoots, but surprisingly, in the limit of very large samples the hysteresis loops vanish. We argue that, although there can be striking differences over a wide range of length scales, the universality class governing this pseudohysteresis is again that of the dissipative limit. Random spin-3/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains are investigated using an asymptotically exact renormalization group. Randomness is found to induce a quantum phase transition between two random-singlet phases. In the strong randomness phase the effective spins at low energies are S_eff=3/2, while in the weak randomness phase the effective spins are S_eff=1/2. Separating them is a quantum critical point near which there is a non-trivial mixture of S=1/2, S=1, and S=3/2 effective spins at low temperatures., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Typos corrected

The nature of the zero temperature ordering transition in the 3D Gaussian random field Ising magnet is studied numerically, aided by scaling analyses. In the ferromagnetic phase the scaling of the roughness of the domain walls, $w\sim L^\zeta$, is consistent with the theoretical prediction $\zeta = 2/3$. As the randomness is increased through the transition, the probability distribution of the interfacial tension of domain walls scales as for a single second order transition. At the critical point, the fractal dimensions of domain walls and the fractal dimension of the outer surface of spin clusters are investigated: there are at least two distinct physically important fractal dimensions. These dimensions are argued to be related to combinations of the energy scaling exponent, $\theta$, which determines the violation of hyperscaling, the correlation length exponent $\nu$, and the magnetization exponent $\beta$. The value $\beta = 0.017\pm 0.005$ is derived from the magnetization: this estimate is supported by the study of the spin cluster size distribution at criticality. The variation of configurations in the interior of a sample with boundary conditions is consistent with the hypothesis that there is a single transition separating the disordered phase with one ground state from the ordered phase with two ground states. The array of results are shown to be consistent with a scaling picture and a geometric description of the influence of boundary conditions on the spins. Non-equilibrium dynamics of classical random Ising spin chains are studied using asymptotically exact real space renormalization group. Specifically the random field Ising model with and without an applied field (and the Ising spin glass (SG) in a field), in the universal regime of a large Imry Ma length so that coarsening of domains after a quench occurs over large scales. Two types of domain walls diffuse in opposite Sinai random potentials and mutually annihilate. The domain walls converge rapidly to a set of system-specific time-dependent positions {\it independent of the initial conditions}. We obtain the time dependent energy, magnetization and domain size distribution (statistically independent). The equilibrium limits agree with known exact results. We obtain exact scaling forms for two-point equal time correlation and two-time autocorrelations. We also compute the persistence properties of a single spin, of local magnetization, and of domains. The analogous quantities for the spin glass are obtained. We compute the two-point two-time correlation which can be measured by experiments on spin-glass like systems. Thermal fluctuations are found to be dominated by rare events; all moments of truncated correlations are computed. The response to a small field applied after waiting time $t_w$, as measured in aging experiments, and the fluctuation-dissipation ratio $X(t,t_w)$ are computed. For $(t-t_w) \sim t_w^{\hat{\alpha}}$, $\hat{\alpha} <1$, it equals its equilibrium value X=1, though time translational invariance fails. An infinite-range model of an elastic manifold pulled through a random potential by an applied force $F$ is analyzed focusing on inertial effects. When the inertial parameter, $M$, is small, there is a continuous depinning transition from a small-$F$ static phase to a large-$F$ moving phase. When $M$ is increased to $M_c$, a novel tricritical point occurs. For $M\!>\!M_c$, the depinning transition becomes discontinuous with hysteresis. Yet, the distribution of discrete ``avalanche''-like events as the force is increased in the static phase for $M\!>\!M_c$ has an unusual mixture of first-order-like and critical features., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

We examine the ground state of the random quantum Ising model in a transverse field using a generalization of the Ma-Dasgupta-Hu renormalization group (RG) scheme. For spatial dimensionality d=2, we find that at strong randomness the RG flow for the quantum critical point is towards an infinite-randomness fixed point, as in one-dimension. This is consistent with the results of a recent quantum Monte Carlo study by Pich, et al., including estimates of the critical exponents from our RG that agree well with those from the quantum Monte Carlo. The same qualitative behavior appears to occur for three-dimensions; we have not yet been able to determine whether or not it persists to arbitrarily high d. Some consequences of the infinite-randomness fixed point for the quantum critical scaling behavior are discussed. Because frustration is irrelevant in the infinite-randomness limit, the same fixed point should govern both ferromagnetic and spin-glass quantum critical points. Sinai's model of diffusion in one-dimension with random local bias is studied by a real space renormalization group which yields exact results at long times. The effects of an additional small uniform bias force are also studied. We obtain analytically the scaling form of the distribution of the position $x(t)$ of a particle, the probability of it not returning to the origin and the distributions of first passage times, in an infinite sample as well as in the presence of a boundary and in a finite size sample. We compute the distribution of meeting time of two particles. We also obtain a detailed analytic description of thermally averaged trajectories: we compute the distributions of the number of returns and of the number of jumps forward. They obey multifractal scaling, characterized by generalized persistence exponents $\theta(g)$ which we compute. With a small bias, the number of returns is finite, characterized by a universal scaling function. The statistics of the successive times of return of thermally averaged trajectories is obtained. The two time distribution of the positions of a particle, $x(t)$ and $x(t')$ ($t>t'$) is computed exactly. It exhibits ``aging'' with several regimes: without a bias, for $t-t' \sim t'^\alpha, \alpha > 1$, it exhibits a $(\ln t)/(\ln t')$ scaling, with a novel singularity at rescaled positions $x(t)=x(t')$. For closer times $\alpha<1$ there is a quasi-equilibrium regime with $\ln(t-t')/\ln t'$ scaling. The crossover to a $t/t'$ aging form under a small bias is obtained analytically. The stability to dislocations of the elastic phase, or ``Bragg glass'', of a randomly pinned elastic medium in two dimensions is studied using the minimum-cost-flow algorithm for a disordered fully-packed loop model. The elastic phase is found to be unstable to dislocations due to the quenched disorder. A previously introduced real space renormalization-group treatment of the random transverse-field Ising spin chain is extended to provide detailed information on the distribution of the energy gap and the end-to-end correlation function for long chains with free boundary conditions. The dynamics of planar crack fronts in hetergeneous media near the critical load for onset of crack motion are investigated both analytically and by numerical simulations. Elasticity of the solid leads to long range stress transfer along the crack front which is non-monotonic in time due to the elastic waves in the medium. In the quasistatic limit with instantaneous stress transfer, the crack front exhibits dynamic critical phenomenon, with a second order like transition from a pinned to a moving phase as the applied load is increased through a critical value. At criticality, the crack-front is self-affine, with a roughness exponent $\zeta =0.34\pm 0.02$. The dynamic exponent $z$ is found to be equal to $ 0.74\pm 0.03$ and the correlation length exponent $\nu =1.52\pm 0.02$. These results are in good agreement with those obtained from an epsilon expansion. Sound-travel time delays in the stress transfer do not change the static exponents but the dynamic exponent $z$ becomes exactly one. Real elastic waves, however, lead to overshoots in the stresses above their eventual static value when one part of the crack front moves forward. Simplified models of these stress overshoots are used to show that overshoots are relevant at the depinning transition leading to a decrease in the critical load and an apparent jump in the velocity of the crack front directly to a non-zero value. In finite systems, the velocity also shows hysteretic behaviour as a function of the loading. These results suggest a first order like transition. Simple models for ruptures along a heterogeneous earthquake fault zone are studied, focussing on the interplay between the roles of disorder and dynamical effects. A class of models are found to operate naturally at a critical point whose properties yield power law scaling of earthquake statistics. Various dynamical effects can change the behavior to a distribution of small events combined with characteristic system size events. The dynamics of tensile crack fronts restricted to advance in a plane are studied. In an ideal linear elastic medium, a propagating mode along the crack front with a velocity slightly less than the Rayleigh wave velocity, is found to exist. But the dependence of the effective fracture toughness $\Gamma(v)$ on the crack velocity is shown to destabilize the crack front if $(d\Gamma)/(dv)<0$. Short wavelength radiation due to weak random heterogeneities leads to this instability at low velocities. The implications of these results for the crack dynamics are discussed., Comment: 12 pages

The dynamics of a single crack moving through a heterogeneous medium is studied in the quasi-static approximation. Equations of motion for the crack front are formulated and the resulting scaling behaviour analyzed. In a model scalar system and for mode III (tearing) cracks, the crack surface is found to be self affine with a roughness exponent of $\zeta=1/2$. But in the usual experimental case of mode I (tensile) cracks, local mode preference causes the crack surface to be only logarithmically rough, quite unlike those seen in experiments. The effects of residual stresses are considered and found, potentially, to lead to increased crack surface roughness. But it appears likely that elastic wave propagation effects may be needed to explain the very rough crack surfaces observed experimentally., Comment: 4 pages, 1 fig (eps file)

A description of a dislocation-free elastic glass phase in terms of domain walls is developed and used as the basis of a renormalization group analysis of the energetics of dislocation loops added to the system. It is found that even after optimizing over possible paths of large dislocation loops, their energy is still very likely to be positive when the dislocation core energy is large. A simple model of the driven motion of interacting particles in a two dimensional random medium is analyzed, focusing on the critical behavior near to the threshold that separates a static phase from a flowing phase with a steady-state current. The critical behavior is found to be surprisingly robust, being independent of whether the driving force is increased suddenly or adiabatically. Just above threshold, the flow is concentrated on a sparse network of channels, but the time scale for convergence to this fixed network diverges with a larger exponent that that for convergence of the current density to its steady-state value. This is argued to be caused by the ``dangerous irrelevance'' of dynamic particle collisions at the critical point. Tunnelling impurities in metals have been known for some time to have the potential for exhibiting Kondo-like physics. However previous models based on an impurity hopping between two equivalent positions have run into trouble due to the existence of relevant operators that drive the system away from the non-Fermi-liquid Kondo fixed point. In the case of an impurity hopping among positions with higher symmetry, such as triangular symmetry, it is shown here that the non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures can be generic. Using various bosonization techniques, the fixed point is shown to be {\em stable}. However, unlike the conventional two-channel Kondo (2CK) model, it has {\em four} leading irrelevant operators, implying that while the form of the singular temperature dependence of physical quantities is similar to the 2CK model, there will not be simple universal amplitude ratios. The phase diagram of this system is analyzed and a critical manifold is found to separate the non-Fermi-liquid from a conventional Fermi liquid fixed point. A simple model for the nonlinear collective transport of interacting particles in a random medium with strong disorder is introduced and analyzed. A finite threshold for the driving force divides the behavior into two regimes characterized by the presence or absence of a steady-state particle current. Below this threshold, transient motion is found in response to an increase in the force, while above threshold the flow approaches a steady state with motion only on a network of channels which is sparse near threshold. Some of the critical behavior near threshold is analyzed via mean field theory, and analytic results on the statistics of the moving phase are derived. Many of the results should apply, at least qualitatively, to the motion of magnetic bubble arrays and to the driven motion of vortices in thin film superconductors when the randomness is strong enough to destroy the tendencies to lattice order even on short length scales. It has been claimed that an impurity hopping between two sites in a metal can lead to non--Fermi liquid behavior if the bias between the two sites is tuned to zero. Here it is shown that several extra tunnelling processes are allowed; those involving bare impurity tunnelling as well as two--electron--assisted tunnelling play important roles. These terms generally drive the system away from the intermediate coupling non--Fermi--liquid fixed point, which has the character of the two channel Kondo problem. In order to find the non-Fermi liquid behavior a combination of these terms must be small over a range of energy scales. The prospects for obtaining these conditions are studied by analyzing both the weak coupling and the intermediate coupling behavior, together with the connecting crossover region. Unfortunately, the conclusions are rather pessimistic. The phase diagram and the important crossover are analyzed via bosonization and refermionization and some of the results compared to those obtained from conformal field theory. It has been conjectured that an impurity with charge Z greater or equal to 2 can be localized due to its interaction with electrons in a metal. The simplest case is an impurity free to move between only two sites, which interacts locally with s-wave electrons. For Z greater or equal to 2 the hopping of the impurity is formally irrelevant and this has been argued to lead to localization. In this paper it is shown that other processes, in particular joint hopping of the impurity and one or more electrons between the sites, play an important role and have not been treated properly in the literature. Being relevant in a renormalization group sense, even when Z greater or equal to 2, these terms lead to delocalization of the impurity. Using bosonization, it is shown how these processes are generated from marginal operators that are usually neglected and the dangers of ignoring marginal or irrelevant operators are discussed in detail. Questions about implications for the more general situation of many sites to which the impurity can hop, are also considered., Comment: 41 pages

Interstitials and vacancies in the Abrikosov phase of clean Type II superconductors are line imperfections, which cannot extend across macroscopic equilibrated samples at low temperatures. We argue that the entropy associated with line wandering nevertheless can cause these defects to proliferate at a sharp transition which will exist if this occurs below the temperature at which the crystal actually melts. Vortices are both entangled and crystalline in the resulting ``supersolid'' phase, which in a dual ``boson'' analog system is closely related to a two-dimensional quantum crystal of He$^4$ with interstitials or vacancies in its ground state. The supersolid {\it must} occur for $B\gg B_\times$, where $B_\times$ is the decoupling field above which vortices begin to behave two-dimensionally. Numerical calculations show that interstitials, rather than vacancies, are the preferred defect for $B\gg \phi_0/\lambda_\perp^2$, and allow us to estimate whether proliferation also occurs for $B\,\lot\,B_\times$.The implications of the supersolid phase for transport measurements, dislocation configurations and neutron diffraction are discussed., Comment: 53 pages and 15 figures, available upon request, written in plain TEX

Some of the properties of the low temperature vortex-glass phase of randomly-pinned flux lines in 1+1 dimensions are studied. The flux arrays are found to be sensitive to small changes in external parameters such as the magnetic field or temperature. These effects are captured by the variations in the magnetic response and noise, which have universal statistics and should provide an unambiguous signature of the glass phase., Comment: 11 pages and no figures; revtex 3.0

A systematic analysis of large scale fluctuations in the low temperature pinned phase of a directed polymer in a random potential is described. These fluctuations come from rare regions with nearly degenerate ``ground states''. The probability distribution of their sizes is found to have a power law tail. The rare regions in the tail dominate much of the physics. The analysis presented here takes advantage of the mapping to the noisy-Burgers' equation. It complements a phenomenological description of glassy phases based on a scaling picture of droplet excitations and a recent variational approach with ``broken replica symmetry''. It is argued that the power law distribution of large thermally active excitations is a consequence of the continuous statistical ``tilt'' symmetry of the directed polymer, the breaking of which gives rise to the large active excitations in a manner analogous to the appearance of Goldstone modes in pure systems with a broken continuous symmetry., Comment: 59 pages including 8 figures ( REVTEX 3.0 )E-mail: hwa@cmt.harvard.edu

The equilibrium statistical mechanics of a d dimensional ``oriented'' manifold in an N+d dimensional random medium are analyzed in d=4-epsilon dimensions. For N=1, this problem describes an interface pinned by impurities. For d=1, the model becomes identical to the directed polymer in a random medium. Here, we generalize the functional renormalization group method used previously to study the interface problem, and extract the behavior in the double limit epsilon small and N large, finding non-analytic corrections in 1/N. For short-range disorder, the interface width scales as a power law of the width. We calculate the roughness exponent characterizing this power law for small epsilon and large N, as well as other properties of the phase. The critical behavior of pinned charge density waves (CDW's) is studied as the threshold for sliding is approached. Using the Fukuyama-Lee-Rice Hamiltonian with relaxational dynamics, the polarization and linear response are calculated numerically. ... On the irreversible approach to threshold, the response due to avalanches triggered by local instabilities dominates the polarizability, which diverges in one and two dimensions. Characteristic diverging length scales are studied using finite-size scaling of the sample-to-sample variations of the threshold field in finite systems and finite-size effects in the linear polarizability and the irreversible polarization. A dominant diverging correlation length is found which controls the threshold field distribution, finite-size effects in the irreversible polarization, and a cutoff size for the avalanche size distribution.
