Abstract

As recovery in Nepal begins after the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck in April 2015, there is an opportunity to ensure that reconstruction and resettlement policies and programmes are inclusive of women and those who are landless - some of the poorest and most marginalized people in the country. This will help address historic social inequalities and rebuild a stronger, more equal Nepal. This briefing paper reviews the current situation and presents recommendations to help achieve this.

32. Beyond Safe Land: Why security of land tenure is crucial for the Philippines’ post-Haiyan recovery

Abstract

After the devastation caused in the Philippines by Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013, the authorities pledged to ‘build back better’ to ensure that affected communities were stronger and more resilient in the face of future storms. Significant efforts and some important steps have been taken to begin to fulfil that vision. But unless the fundamental issue of security of land tenure is addressed, poor and vulnerable people – those most affected by Typhoon Haiyan – are at risk of being left out of any lasting recovery and rehabilitation in the aftermath of the strongest storm to ever make landfall., This Oxfam briefing shows how the government’s commitment to build back better requires more than building safe houses. It also demands measures to provide land tenure security for poor and vulnerable people as part of relocation and resettlement efforts and as part of livelihoods recovery programmes.

Abstract

Through seven London case studies of communities opposing social housing demolition and/or proposing community-led plans, Community-Led Regeneration offers a toolkit of planning mechanisms and other strategies that residents and planners working with communities can use to resist demolition and propose community-led schemes. The case studies are Walterton and Elgins Community Homes, West Ken and Gibbs Green Community Homes, Cressingham Gardens Community, Greater Carpenters Neighbourhood Forum, Focus E15, People’s Empowerment Alliance for Custom House (PEACH), and Alexandra and Ainsworth Estates. Together, these case studies represent a broad overview of groups that formed as a reaction to proposed demolitions of residents' housing, and groups that formed as a way to manage residents' homes and public space better.

Abstract

A high level of transparency in reported research is critical for several reasons, such as ensuring an acceptable level of trustworthiness and enabling replication. Transparency in qualitative research permits the identification of specific circumstances which are associated with findings and observations. Thus, transparency is important for the repeatability of original studies and for explorations of the transferability of original findings. There has been no investigation into levels of transparency in reported technology education research to date. With a position that increasing transparency would be beneficial, this article presents an analysis of levels of transparency in contemporary technology education research studies which employed interviews within their methodologies, and which were published within the "International Journal of Technology and Design Education and Design and Technology Education: An International Journal" (n = 38). The results indicate room for improvement, especially in terms of documenting researcher positionality, determinations of data saturation, and how power imbalances were managed. A discussion is presented on why it is important to improve levels of transparency in reported studies, and a guide on areas to make transparent is presented for qualitative and quantitative research.
