Abstract

The Bodélé Depression, Chad is the planet's largest single source of dust. Deflation from the Bodélé could be seen as a simple coincidence of two key prerequisites: strong surface winds and a large source of suitable sediment. But here we hypothesise that long term links between topography, winds, deflation and dust ensure the maintenance of the dust source such that these two apparently coincidental key ingredients are connected by land-atmosphere processes with topography acting as the overall controlling agent. We use a variety of observational and numerical techniques, including a regional climate model, to show that: 1) contemporary deflation from the Bodélé is delineated by topography and a surface wind stress maximum; 2) the Tibesti and Ennedi mountains play a key role in the generation of the erosive winds in the form of the Bodélé Low Level Jet (LLJ); 3) enhanced deflation from a stronger Bodélé LLJ during drier phases, for example, the Last Glacial Maximum, was probably sufficient to create the shallow lake in which diatoms lived during wetter phases, such as the Holocene pluvial. Winds may therefore have helped to create the depression in which erodible diatom material accumulated. Instead of a simple coincidence of nature, dust from the world's largest source may result from the operation of long term processes on paleo timescales which have led to ideal conditions for dust generation in the world's largest dust source. Similar processes plausibly operate in other dust hotspots in topographic depressions.

Abstract

The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic - eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air-sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored - from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation - are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract

In the frame of LEMON project (Lidar Emitter and Multi-species greenhouse gases Observation iNstrument - European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, GA n°821868), we are developing a multi-species differential absorption Lidar (DIAL). The goal is to benefit from innovative technological developments in terms of optical emitter, spectral reference, to be able to address H2O and its isotope HDO at 1982 nm, CO2 at 2051 nm, and potentially CH4 at 2290 nm, for future ground-based range-resolved DIAL sensing, and with the prospect of future airborne integrated-path DIAL (IPDA). The infrared emitter is based on the combination of two specific, patented, no-seeder Nested Cavity OPOs (NesCOPOs) coupled to a single optical parametric amplifier (OPA) line for high energy pulses generation. Specific developments are also pursued on the frequency reference for the emitter, which is planned to be provided by a GPS referenced frequency comb against which the emitter output pulses can be heterodyned. Besides the instrument design, specific tests experiments have been carried out, covering a wide panel of activities: radiation testing of some critical components to assess the potential of some key components for future space applications, emitter and frequency reference testing, preliminary DIAL tests with laboratory test-beds and comparison with specific in-situ calibration instruments as well as additional innovative techniques evaluation for the emitter. 43. The Saharan heat low and moisture transport pathways in the central Sahara—Multiaircraft observations and Africa‐LAM evaluation

Abstract

We present a characterization of the Saharan heat low (SHL) based on dropsonde observations made on 22 June 2011 by two simultaneously flying aircraft during the Fennec project. The observations are used to identify moisture transport pathways and to validate the UK Met Office limited area model for northern Africa (Africa‐LAM). The observations capture the SHL, harmattan, and monsoon surge. The SHL has a northeast‐southwest orientated elongated shape centered over northern Mauritania. The SHL core is associated with a 950 hPa temperature minimum (36.4°C) in the morning caused by the monsoon surge and a maximum (42.6°C) in the afternoon. The monsoon surge east of the SHL core splits into two transport pathways: (a) curving around the SHL core in the north, especially pronounced in a morning near‐surface layer, and (b) northeastward transport within the ~2 km deep monsoon surge (afternoon observations only). In the morning the model forecasts the harmattan, monsoon surge, and the SHL geographic location and northeast‐southwest orientation well but the model represents the SHL flatter and more spatially extended and overestimates the convective boundary layer (CBL) by up to ~0.3 km. The simulated afternoon SHL location appears shifted westward by up to ~1°. The model overestimates the shallow afternoon monsoon surge CBL depth of ~1.8 km by >2 km resulting in southwestward transport of vertically mixed moisture above ~2.5 km contrasting observed northeastward‐only transport at lower levels. This moisture distribution model error is likely to have consequences for simulations of Saharan thermodynamics and dust emissions caused by convection‐driven cold pools.

44. Imaginary-Time Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory and Its Application for Robust Convergence of Electronic States

Abstract

Reliable and robust convergence to the electronic ground state within density functional theory (DFT) Kohn-Sham (KS) calculations remains a thorny issue in many systems of interest. In such cases, charge sloshing can delay or completely hinder the convergence. Here, we use an approach based on transforming the time-dependent DFT equations to imaginary time, followed by imaginary-time evolution, as a reliable alternative to the self-consistent field (SCF) procedure for determining the KS ground state. We discuss the theoretical and technical aspects of this approach and show that the KS ground state should be expected to be the long-imaginary-time output of the evolution, independent of the exchange-correlation functional or the level of theory used to simulate the system. By maintaining self-consistency between the single-particle wave functions (orbitals) and the electronic density throughout the determination of the stationary state, our method avoids the typical difficulties encountered in SCF. To demonstrate dependability of our approach, we apply it to selected systems which struggle to converge with SCF schemes. In addition, through the van Leeuwen theorem, we affirm the physical meaningfulness of imaginary-time TDDFT, justifying its use in certain topics of statistical mechanics such as in computing imaginary-time path integrals.
