Aim: The present study aimed to investigate if the Guatemalan dentist’s options on tooth bleaching could be influenced by their time in clinical practice, the level of specialization or their working place. Methods: A representative sample of dentists working in clinical practice in Guatemala was selected. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire with information related to gender, professional characteristics (time since graduation in years and working place) and preferences regarding vital (at-home or in-office; type and concentration of bleaching agent) and the nonvital tooth bleaching (bleaching agent used). The analysis was performed and the association between preference for bleaching technique and independent variables were investigated using Fisher’s exact test. Results: 200 dentists were interviewed. More than half of dentists were male (57.0%) with time since graduation between 11 and 20 years (n= 64; 32.3%). Dentists mostly (60.5%) preferred in-office technique for vital bleaching, with 10-20% Carbamide peroxide (CP) as the preferred agent (50%). For nonvital teeth, the preferred agent (46.8%) was 37% Hydrogen Peroxide (HP). About the associations, younger dentists (< 20 years of graduation) selected mostly in-office technique, while those with more than 20 years indicated more the at-home technique. Also, the dentists working in private practice chose more frequently in-office technique. Thus, the in-office technique was more popular among Guatemalan dentists, with 10-20% CP and 37% HP selected as favorite bleaching agents for vital and nonvital techniques, respectively. Conclusion: The time of clinical practice and working place influenced some choices.

Aim: To compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes observed in Necrotic Immature Permanent Teeth (NIPT) after revascularization or apexification with MTA-apical plug. Methodology: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of science and Scopus were the databases used, up to July 30th, 2017, for article research. Independent reviewers read the titles and abstracts of all reports that met inclusion/exclusion criteria: prospective or retrospective clinical studies comparing the revascularization of root canal and apexification. Clinical success of therapies, deposition and thickening of lateral dentinal walls (root width) and the continuation of root development (root length) were investigated. Bias risk of included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias. Results: From 1642 records, five papers fulfilled all inclusion criteria. Overall, 91 teeth were submitted to revascularization and 64 teeth to apexification with MTA. The mean follow-up was 23.2 months in revascularization and 21.8 in apexification. Clinical success rate was of 87.9% in the revascularization group and 90.6% in the apexification group. An increase on lateral dentinal walls thickening was observed in most revascularization cases (13%) while MTA as apical plug suggest a mild resorption of the root (−1.3%). High bias risk was observed on included studies. Conclusions: Apexification with MTA-apical plug provides similar clinical success to revascularization. However, radiographic measurements showed an improvement in thickening of lateral dentinal walls in most of the revascularization cases in addition to a higher dental development. However, these results should be interpreted with caution. Riassunto: Obiettivi: Confrontare gli esiti clinici e radiografici osservati nei denti necrotici permanenti immaturi (NIPT) dopo rivascolarizzazione o apecificazione con un tappo apicale di MTA. Materiali e metodi: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of science e Scopus sono stati i database utilizzati fino al 30 luglio 2017 per la ricerca di articoli. Revisori indipendenti hanno letto i titoli e gli abstract di tutti i report che hanno soddisfatto i criteri di inclusione/esclusione: studi clinici prospettici o retrospettivi che hanno confrontato la rivascolarizzazione del canale radicolare e l’apecificazione. Sono stati studiati il successo clinico delle terapie, la deposizione e l’ispessimento delle pareti dentinali laterali (larghezza della radice) e la continuazione dello sviluppo della radice (lunghezza della radice). Il rischio di bias degli studi inclusi è stato valutato utilizzando il rischio di bias di Cochrane. Risultati: Di 1.642 documenti, cinque articoli soddisfano tutti i criteri di inclusione. Complessivamente, 91 denti sono stati sottoposti a rivascolarizzazione e 64 denti all’apecificazione con MTA. Il follow-up medio è stato di 23,2 mesi per la rivascolarizzazione e 21,8 per la apecificazione. Il tasso di successo clinico è stato dell’87,9% nel gruppo di rivascolarizzazione e del 90,6% nel gruppo di apecificazione. Un aumento dell’ispessimento delle pareti dentinali laterali è stato osservato nella maggior parte dei casi di rivascolarizzazione (13%) mentre l’uso di MTA come tappo apicale riporta un lieve riassorbimento della radice (−1,3%). Un elevato rischio di bias è stato osservato per gli studi inclusi. Conclusioni: L’apecificazione con il tappo apicale di MTA fornisce un successo clinico simile alla rivascolarizzazione. Tuttavia, le misurazioni radiografiche hanno mostrato un miglioramento dell’ispessimento delle pareti dentinali laterali nella maggior parte dei casi di rivascolarizzazione oltre a uno sviluppo dentale superiore. Abstract We aimed to analyze the effects of family income trajectories on the increase in dental caries from childhood to young adulthood. Data from the 1993 Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort study, in which dental caries was measured at ages 6, 12, and 18 years, were analyzed. Family income of 302 participants was assessed at birth, and at 4, 11, 15, and 18 years of age. Mother's education, toothbrushing frequency, dental visiting, dental caries in primary dentition, and birth weight were covariates. A latent class growth analysis was conducted to characterize trajectories of time-varying variables. The influence of income trajectories on the increase in dental caries from age 6 to age 18 was evaluated by a generalized linear mixed model. After adjustment, the increases in numbers of decayed and missing teeth (DMT) from age 6 to age 18 were associated with family income trajectory. The incident rate ratios (IRR) of DMT compared with the group of stable high incomes were 2.36 for stable low incomes, 1.71 for downward, and 1.64 for upward. The IRR of teeth being filled in stable low-income groups compared with stable high-income groups was 0.55. Family income mobility affected treatment patterns of dental caries. Differences across income trajectory groups were found in the components of dental caries indices rather than in the experience of disease.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess technical preferences of general dental practitioners when restoring anterior composite restorations. How the level of clinical experience or post-graduate training infuenced their options was also tested. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed using a questionnaire with general dental practitioners (GDPs) (n=276) in Southern Brazil. Information regarding post graduation training (specialization, master's or PhD degree) and linical experience (years since completing graduation) were gathered. The options regarding anterior composite restorations (type of composite, adhesive system, light curing unit, polishing procedures and rubber dam use) were collected. Data were submitted to descriptive analysis and associations were tested. Results: Response rate was 68% (187). GDPs selected microhybrid composite (52%) and 2-step total etch adhesive system (77%). LED was the preferred method of activation for 72.8%. Immediate polishing was preferred by 75%, using a combination of techniques. Most of the respondents (74.3%) did not use rubber dam. OBJETIVO : Analisar a associação entre ser beneficiário do Programa Bolsa Família e condições de saúde bucal entre escolares. MÉTODOS : Estudo transversal com 1.107 escolares entre oito e 12 anos de idade, provenientes de 20 escolas públicas e particulares da cidade de Pelotas, RS, em 2010. Os beneficiários do Programa Bolsa Família foram verificados por meio de lista fornecida pelas escolas participantes do estudo. Informações demográficas, socioeconômicas, de uso de serviço odontológico e de higiene bucal foram obtidas por meio de questionários respondidos pelos escolares e por seus pais. O exame clínico avaliou a presença de placa dental e experiência de cárie. Os dados foram analisados por meio dos testes do Qui-quadrado e Qui-quadrado de tendência linear e por regressão de Poisson (razão de prevalência; intervalo de confiança de 95%). RESULTADOS : Crianças de família não nuclear, que apresentavam CPOD ≥ 1 e que nunca haviam feito uso de serviço odontológico na vida estiveram associadas ao recebimento do Programa Bolsa Família. O modelo final mostrou que a prevalência de cárie foi duas vezes maior (RP 2,00; IC95% 1,47;2,69) em alunos beneficiários do Programa que também apresentaram maior severidade da doença, quando comparados aos alunos de escolas particulares (RM 1,53; IC95% 1,18;2,00). A prevalência de escolares que nunca haviam ido ao dentista foi mais de seis vezes maior em beneficiários do Programa Bolsa Família (RP 6,18; IC95% 3,07;12,45), em comparação com aqueles das escolas privadas, após ajustes. CONCLUSÕES : Escolares beneficiários do Programa Bolsa Família possuem maior carga de cárie e são os que menos acessam os serviços odontológicos. Esses achados sugerem a necessidade de incorporação da saúde bucal nas condicionalidades do Programa Bolsa Família.

OBJECTIVE Identifying, through a systematic literature review, evidence of a possible association between obesity and dental caries. METHODS A search of articles published between 2005 and January 2012 was performed in the Medline/PubMed, LILACS and Web of Science databases. The quality of scientific evidence of the selected articles was assessed by the items proposed for observational studies in the Downs & Black instrument. RESULTS Initially, 537 references were found; after checking the titles and abstracts by two independent researchers, twenty-eight articles were selected for complete reading. Ten of them that assessed the primary and/or permanent dentition observed a positive association between obesity and dental caries and one study found an inverse association. According to the Downs & Black classification, thirteen articles with good scientific evidence were found. CONCLUSIONS The present review did not find sufficient evidence regarding the association between obesity and dental caries, and it did not clarify the possible role of diet and other possible effect modifiers on this association.

The aim of this study was to describe the methodology and results of oral health studies nested in a birth cohort in Pelotas, Southern Brazil. For the oral health studies a sub-sample (n = 900) was selected from the cohort and dental examinations and interviews were performed at ages 15 (n = 888) and 24 years (n = 720; 81.1%). Data collection included dental outcomes, dental care, oral health behaviors, and use of dental services. Mean DMF-T varied from 5.1 (SD = 3.8) to 5.6 (SD = 4.1) in the study period. The proportion of individuals with at least one filled tooth increased from 51.9% to more than 70%. Individuals who had always been poor used dental services less and had fewer healthy teeth on average than those who had never been poor. Individuals with decreasing or increasing family income trajectories showed intermediate values. An increase was seen in the number of healthy teeth from age 15 to 24 only among those who had never been poor. A history of at least one experience with poverty had a negative impact on oral health in adulthood.Descreveu-se a metodologia e os resultados dos estudos de saúde bucal em uma coorte de nascimentos. Em 1997, uma amostra da coorte de nascimentos de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, (n = 900) foi sorteada para o estudo de saúde bucal (15 anos) e os mesmos indivíduos foram novamente investigados aos 24 anos. Agravos bucais, cuidados com a saúde bucal e uso de serviços odontológicos foram avaliados. Participaram do estudo 888 adolescentes aos 15 anos e 720 (81,1%) aos 24. O índice CPO-D médio variou de 5,1 (DP = 3,8) a 5,6 (DP = 4,1) no período. Ter pelo menos um dente restaurado passou de 51,9% aos 15 anos para mais de 70% aos 24. A proporção do uso de serviços e a média de dentes saudáveis foram menores dentre os sempre pobres quando comparados àqueles nunca pobres. Indivíduos com trajetórias econômicas descendente ou ascendente tiveram valores intermediários. Aumento de dentes saudáveis dos 15 aos 24 anos foi observado apenas dentre aqueles nunca pobres. Apresentar pelo menos um episódio de pobreza ao longo da vida impactou na saúde bucal na vida adulta.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to verify the occurrence of dental injuries in professional Brazilian soccer players, the level of knowledge of the teams' medical departments about mouthguards, and the conducts adopted in cases of dental trauma during the match. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Closed questionnaires were sent to the physicians in charge of the medical departments of the 40 teams enrolled in the first and second divisions of the Brazilian professional soccer league in 2007. The data obtained were subjected to descriptive analysis to determine absolute and relative frequencies of answers for each one of the questions. RESULTS: Physicians from 38 (95%) of the 40 teams in the first and second divisions answered the questionnaires and 71.1% reported the occurrence of some type of dental injury during soccer practice, dental fractures (74.1%) and avulsions (59.3%) being the most prevalent ones. Regarding emergency conducts, approximately 50% answered that a successful replantation could be obtained in periods from 6 to 24 h after injury, and 27.8% were not able to answer this question. Regarding mouthguard use, 48.6% of the physicians did not know about mouthguards, and only 21.6% usually recommended their use by the soccer players. Among the physicians who do not recommend the use of mouthguards, 50% justified that it was not necessary. Almost 50% of the medical departments do not have a dentist as part of the health professional staff. CONCLUSIONS: It was possible to conclude that dental injuries are common during professional soccer practice and that there is a lack of information in the medical departments related to the emergency conducts and prevention of dental trauma.

Abstract The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of dissatisfaction with dental appearance among 24-year-old Brazilian adults and the associated factors in life course. A subsample (n = 720) of the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort in southern Brazil was investigated at the ages of 15 and 24 years using clinical (caries and periodontal) examinations and interviews. The outcome was dissatisfaction with dental appearance at the age of 24 years. Covariate variables included socioeconomic factors, oral health, and dissatisfaction with general appearance collected during different periods of life. Poisson regression models with robust variance were applied. The prevalence of dissatisfaction with dental appearance was 43.5% (95%CI: 39.8–47.1). Individuals with downward income mobility (PR = 1.22, 95%CI: 1.07–1.79) and those always poor (PR = 1.21, 95%CI: 1.00–1.57) presented a higher prevalence of dissatisfaction with their dental appearance even after oral health variables and dissatisfaction with general appearance were controlled for. Moderate/severe malocclusion at 15 years (PR = 1.34, 95%CI: 1.13–1.59), highest experience of untreated dental caries at 24 years (PR = 1.82, 95%CI: 1.46–2.27), and dental pain experience at 24 years (PR = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.22–1.75) were associated with the outcome. Also, the prevalence of dissatisfaction with dental appearance was 20% higher (PR = 1.20, 95%CI: 1.01–1.43) among those dissatisfied with their general appearance. Our findings demonstrated a high prevalence of dissatisfaction with dental appearance among young adults. Lifetime economic disadvantage and dental problems (malocclusion at 15 years, untreated dental caries at 24 years, and dental pain at 24 years) were associated with dissatisfaction with dental appearance among young adults.

Abstract The present study aimed to investigate the contextual inequalities of specialized public dental care (SPDC) in Brazil. The outcome was the trajectory of dental specialized production in municipalities with SPDC (from 2015 to 2017) obtained by group-based trajectory modeling. A Poisson regression model was used to analyze the factors associated with the high trajectory of SPDC production. The inequality indicators for SPDC production were the slope index and the concentration index according to contextual factors. The study included 954 SPDC units distributed across 893 municipalities. Among the municipalities evaluated, 62.9% had a low trajectory of SPDC. Large-sized municipalities had the highest production (IRR = 2.84, 95%CI: 1.94–4.14) and the southern region had the lowest production (IRR = 0.73, 95%CI: 0.58–0.92). Municipalities presenting a very high human development index (HDI) showed the greatest SPDC production (IRR = 3.34, 95%CI: 1.09–10.24), as well as municipalities with the highest tertile of schooling rate (IRR = 1.23, 95%CI: 1.00–1.50). Abstract Although periodontal disease is common during pregnancy, little is known about socioeconomic, behavioral, or biological determinants related to clinically assessed periodontal condition during this period. We assessed the prevalence of periodontal disease and associated factors in pregnant women. This population-based survey used data used from the 2015 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study, Brazil. Pregnant women expected to give birth between December 2014 and May 2016 were interviewed and clinically examined by trained dentist, with periodontal measures collected in all teeth, six sites per tooth. Outcomes were periodontitis (using the 2012 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Periodontology criteria) and gingivitis (by the 2018 European Federation of Periodontology/ American Academy of Periodontology classification). Multivariate hierarchical Poisson regression was used to assess the associations between socioeconomic, systemic, and clinical oral factors and periodontal disease. A total of 2,474 pregnant women participated in the study. Prevalence of periodontitis and gingivitis was 14.63% and 21.67%, respectively. Objectives: This study aimed to conduct a systematic evaluation of the literature on whether individuals exposed to alcohol intake present differences in the subgingival microbial composition compared to those unexposed. Methods: Five databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, SCOPUS and Web of Science) and one source of grey literature (Google Scholar) were searched by two independent reviewers up to December 2022 according to pre-specified eligibility criteria. No restrictions were imposed regarding the date and language of publication and the periodontal status of the participants. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used for methodological quality appraisal and a narrative synthesis was performed. Results: Eight cross-sectional studies and one cross-sectional analysis nested in a cohort were considered for qualitative analysis, including data of 4636 individuals. Overall, the studies exhibited considerable heterogeneity in terms of characteristics of the participants and microbiological methods. Four studies have high methodological quality. Exposed individuals have higher overall quantity of periodontal pathogens in shallow and moderate to deep pockets. Findings on richness, relative abundance, alpha- and beta-diversity were limited and inconclusive. Conclusion: The subgingival microbiota of individuals exposed to alcohol intake has higher overall quantity of red (i.e., P. gingivalis) and orange-complex (i.e., F. nucleatum) bacteria when compared to those unexposed.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE Measure the prevalence of use of dental services in the previous year and associated factors among 31-year-old adults from a birth cohort of 1982. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study that analyzed a birth cohort of 1982 from the city of Pelotas. In 1997, a systematic sample of 27% of the city’s census sectors was defined and all households in these sectors were visited, where 1,076 15-year-old adolescents were interviewed. For the oral health studies, 900 of these individuals were randomly selected and followed up at 24 and 31 years of age. The study used data collected from 523 individuals in 2013 (at 31 years old). The outcome was visit to the dentist (use of dental services) in the previous year. Demographic factors (sex), socioeconomic factors (income, education), and oral health factors (reason and type of service, self-perception of oral health, dental pain and caries experience - DMFT) were used as independent variables. Prevalence ratios were estimated using Poisson regression. RESULTS The prevalence of use of dental services in the previous year was 55.3% (95%CI: 51.0–59.5%). In the adjusted analysis, the reason and type of service, self-perception of oral health, and DMFT were associated with the outcome. A stronger association was found with use of dental services in individuals who visited for prevention and used the private service, who were satisfied with their oral health, and who had more caries experiences. CONCLUSION 55.3% of the cohort sample used dental services in the previous year. Individuals who visited the dentist of private service for preventive reasons, who were very satisfied with their oral health, used these services in a higher proportion. In addition, a higher DMFT index also led to higher use of services.

Abstract This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the association between self-perceived oral health, oral-health-related quality-of-life (OHRQoL), toothache, and university students’ academic performance or dropout. A cohort of 2,089 students from 64 different courses at a public university in southern Brazil was interviewed in 2016 regarding their self-perceived oral health (Locker instrument; dichotomized into good/poor), OHRQoL (Oral Impacts on Daily Performances instrument, OIDP) and having had any toothache over the last 6 months (yes/no). After three years (2020), the academic records of 1,870 of these students were assessed, their average grade over all courses evaluated, and their dropout status was determined. Multivariable linear or logistic regression adjusting for gender, skin color, age, family income and maternal education was used to associate oral health variables (self-perceived oral health, OIDP, toothache) and academic performance or dropout. In 2016, 28.6% reported negative self-perceived oral health through the Locker instrument and 31.4% had toothache in the last 6 months. Over the next three years, 36.2% had dropped out. In multivariable regression, toothache in the last 6 months had a decrease of 0.32 (β -0.32, CI95% -0.59; -0.04) points in the final grade and were 35% (OR 1.35 CI95% 1.08; 1.69) more likely to dropout than students without toothache. In conclusion, this study showed that worse oral health conditions may be associated with worse academic performance or dropping out.

RESUMO Objetivo: To describe the initial baseline results of a population-based study, as well as a protocol in order to evaluate the performance of different machine learning algorithms with the objective of predicting the demand for urgent and emergency services in a representative sample of adults from the urban area of Pelotas, Southern Brazil. Methods: The study is entitled “Emergency department use and Artificial Intelligence in PELOTAS (RS) (EAI PELOTAS)” (https://wp.ufpel.edu.br/eaipelotas/). Between September and December 2021, a baseline was carried out with participants. A follow-up was planned to be conducted after 12 months in order to assess the use of urgent and emergency services in the last year. Afterwards, machine learning algorithms will be tested to predict the use of urgent and emergency services over one year. Results: In total, 5,722 participants answered the survey, mostly females (66.8%), with an average age of 50.3 years. The mean number of household people was 2.6. Most of the sample has white skin color and incomplete elementary school or less. Around 30% of the sample has obesity, 14% diabetes, and 39% hypertension. Conclusion: The present paper presented a protocol describing the steps that were and will be taken to produce a model capable of predicting the demand for urgent and emergency services in one year among residents of Pelotas, in Rio Grande do Sul state.

Objetivo: Identificar a magnitude da associação entre experiência de cárie dentária e autopercepção negativa de saúde bucal com determinantes socioeconômicos. Métodos: Estudo transversal realizado com dados de uma coorte prospectiva com os universitários ingressantes na Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel) no ano de 2016. Os dados foram coletados por meio de questionário autoaplicável, incluindo características demográficas, socioeconômicas e psicossociais. Os desfechos do presente estudo foram a experiência de cárie autorrelatada (histórico de doença cárie) e autopercepção de saúde bucal (positiva versus negativa). Resultados: Um total de 3.237 alunos ingressou, dos quais 2.089 (64,5%) concordaram em participar do estudo. O modelo de regressão de Poisson mostrou que universitários com renda familiar de R$1001,00 a 5000,00 e R$5001,00 ou mais apresentaram, respectivamente, uma razão de prevalência (RP) 14% (RP=0,86; IC95% 0,80-0,92) e 18% (RP=0,82; IC95% 0,74 a 0,90) menor de experiência de cárie, assim como indivíduos cujas mães tinham ensino médio completo apresentaram uma prevalência 14% menor (RP= 0,86; IC95% 0,80 a 0,92) e ensino superior completo 19% (RP= 0,81; IC95% 0,75 a 0,87) menor de experiência de cárie, quando comparados aos grupos de referência. Na autopercepção de saúde bucal, os resultados para renda familiar de R$1001 a 5000,00 e R$ 5001 ou mais apresentaram, respectivamente, uma prevalência 23% (RP= 0,77; IC95% 0,64 a 0,91) e 43% (RP= 0,57; IC95% 0,45 a 0,72) menor de ter autopercepção de saúde bucal negativa e indivíduos cujas mães tinham ensino superior completo reportaram uma prevalência 21% menor de autopercepção de saúde bucal negativa quando comparados à referência (RP= 0,79; IC95% 0,66 a 0,97). Conclusões: Os achados do presente estudo confirmam que os indicadores socioeconômicos influenciam a experiência de cárie autorrelatada e a autopercepção de saúde bucal dos universitários.

Objetivo: Avaliar a presença do medo odontológico em universitários brasileiros e observar se a teoria do ciclo vicioso do medo é identificada nesta população. Materiais e métodos: Foi realizado um estudo transversal com universitários ingressantes na Universidade Federal de Pelotas em 2016. Os dados sociodemográficos, medo odontológico, o uso de serviços odontológicos, a percepção de cárie e dor dentária foram coletados através de um questionário auto-administrado. A exposição do estudo foi medo odontológico, e os desfechos incluíram padrão de consulta odontológica, experiência de cárie e dor dentária e autopercepção de saúde bucal. Características sociodemográficas foram incluídas como fatores de confusão. Para testar a associação do medo odontológico com os desfechos, foram utilizados modelos de regressão de Poisson com variância robusta, a fim de estimar as Razões de Prevalência e Intervalos de Confiança. Resultados: Foram avaliados 2.014 universitários, dos quais 22.4% reportaram medo odontológico. Aqueles que reportaram medo odontológico apresentaram uma maior prevalência de não terem ido ao dentista no último ano e, entre os que consultaram, a visita ter sido motivada por dor/problema. Adicionalmente, ter medo aumentou a presença de cárie, dor dentária e autorrelato da saúde bucal negativa. Discussão: Os achados sugerem a presença do ciclo vicioso do medo nesta população de universitários do sul do Brasil. Conclusão: Evidenciou-se a associação entre a presença de medo odontológico e a menor procura por atendimento odontológico, a presença de cárie dentária, dor dentária e saúde bucal autorreportada negativa, corroborando com a teoria do ciclo do medo.

Abstract This was a retrospective cohort study to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the gender gap in articles submitted to three international dental journals based in Brazil. All submissions performed to Brazilian Dental Journal, Brazilian Oral Research, and Journal of Applied Oral Science before (2019) and during the pandemic (2020) were assessed. Gender of the first, last, and corresponding authors were collected. Other variables collected were journal, continent studied by authors and stage of their careers (classified according to authors’ highest degree), and final decision reached in the article. Absolute and relative frequencies with 95% confidence intervals, Pearson’s Chi-square tests, and Fisher’s Exact test were used (α = 0.05). In total, 4,726 unique submissions were analyzed. A higher proportion of early-career authors was observed during the pandemic (44.8% to 49.3%, p = 0.021). Most articles were rejected but without association with gender. Increased proportion of male first authors from before to during the pandemic was observed (39% to 42.1%, p = 0.034). Drop in the proportion of articles with women as first authors was observed for researchers in their early- (65.9% to 58.8%, p = 0.02) and mid-career stages (63% to 55.8%, p = 0.014). Reduction in women as first authors was observed during the pandemic in South and Central Americas (66.7% to 61.5%, p = 0.010), and when the last author was a female, or the corresponding author was a male. In conclusion, a disproportionate impact on female dental researchers in submitting articles in the period from before to during the pandemic was observed when considering first authorship, suggesting that the COVID-19 may have increased the gender inequality in dental science.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between maternal factors and dental visits of children within their first year of life. This study used data from the 2015 Pelotas Birth Cohort and included pregnant women and their children at 12 months of age, followed-up between May 2014 and December 2015. Socioeconomic and demographic data, information on the use of dental services during the last year, and information on dental fear were collected by interviewing the mothers. Information regarding dental caries and periodontal disease were collected during the mother’s clinical examination. The date of each child’s first visit to the dentist was recorded. Crude and adjusted Poisson regression models with robust variance were used. The sample comprised 2,287 mother-child dyads, of which 10.1% of children visited the dentist during the first year of life. Children whose mothers visited the dentist within the last year for preventive reasons (RR: 1.51; 95%CI: 1.12–2.03) or curative reasons (RR: 1.47; 95%CI: 1.08–2.01) were more likely to have visited the dentist during the first year of life compared to those whose mothers had not used dental services during this period. Maternal tooth loss was inversely associated with a child’s visit to the dentist during the first year of life (RR: 0.69; 95%CI: 0.54–0.89). Considering the mother’s history of using dental services, as well as their dental caries history, is necessary to understand and improve patterns of dental health care utilization and implement public oral health policies for young children.

This study aimed to estimate social and racial inequalities in self-rated oral health in adults from the Brazilian birth cohort study. This study belongs to 1982 Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort study. Data from this study was collected for oral health conditions 31 years old (Oral Health Study). The outcome was self-rated oral health, dichotomized into positive (good/very good) and negative (regular/bad/very bad). Analyses were stratified by gender, racial/skin color groups, schooling level and income. For statistical analysis, the slope index of inequality (SII) and the concentration index (CIX) were used. The prevalence of negative self-rated oral health was 36.1%. Social inequalities were observed in self-rated oral health in both absolute and relative terms. A SII of -30.0 (95%CI: -43.6; -16.4) was observed for income, and -27.7 (95%CI: -41.9; -13.4) for schooling level. Both the individuals’ income and the schooling level had negative CIX (CIXincome -14.6 [95%CI: -21.2; -8.0] and CIXschooling level -14.1 [95%CI: -20.7; -7.5]). Furthermore, the prevalence of negative self-rated oral health in black/brown/indigenous individuals from the highest income/schooling level was comparable to prevalence of the outcome in the white individuals belonging to the lowest income/schooling levels. This study results demonstrate racial disparities in oral health regardless of income and schooling levels. Furthermore, a higher concentration of negative self-rated oral health was identified among the most socioeconomically vulnerable individuals. Our findings reinforce the presence of racial and socioeconomic inequalities in oral health.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the association between oral health and rurality in an older Brazilian population. Population-based samples of 1,451 urban and 411 rural elders were obtained from two databases. Several oral health and related measures, including the number of teeth lost, use of dental prostheses, dental visits, self-reported oral health, and perceived need for a dental prosthesis, were compared. Oral health-related information was obtained by a trained research team with interviews conducted in the individuals’ homes. Regression models were used to verify the association between living in rural areas and oral health outcomes after adjusting for possible confounding factors. The elderly population mostly comprised of women in rural or urban areas, and the mean age was 70 years in both locations. Less-educated individuals (without or with complete elementary schooling) were more common in rural regions than in urban areas. After adjustment for socioeconomic characteristics, living in rural areas was associated with a lower perceived need for dental prostheses (PR 0.68, 95% CI 0.56–0.84), poor self-reported oral health (OR 1.24; 95% CI 1.05–1.46), and having fewer teeth (β -1.31; 95% CI -2.18 to -0.45). The place of residence had a significant impact on oral health indicators, with rurality negatively influencing oral health. These findings suggest that preventive and curative strategies for dental services may be needed for the Brazilian rural population.

Abstract Objective Our study aims to compare the efficacy and tooth sensitivity following in-office (35% hydrogen peroxide) or at-home (10% carbamide peroxide) bleaching treatments both preceded by 2% potassium nitrate (2%KF) desensitizing gel. Methodology 130 volunteers were randomly allocated to a) in-office bleaching and a placebo at-home protocol; or b) in-office placebo and at-home bleaching treatment. 2% KF was applied for 10 min before both treatments. Objective color evaluation was performed (spectrophotometer CIEL*a*b* system and CIEDE2000) to calculate the color change (ΔE00). Subjective evaluation was performed using the VITA classical shade guide followed by shade variation (ΔSGU) at the beginning and end of bleaching treatment and 2 weeks post-bleaching. Tooth sensitivity was daily recorded using a Likert scale varying from 1 (no sensitivity) to 5 (severe sensitivity). Analysis was carried out using non-parametric tests. Results Regarding the color change, at-home bleaching resulted in significant color improvement compared to in-office treatment for the parameters Δb* (p=0.003) and Δa* (p=0.014). Two weeks post-bleaching, the at-home treatment resulted in significant color improvement compared to in-office treatment for the parameters Δb* (p=0.037) and ΔE00 (p=0.033). No differences were observed in either ΔSGU parameters. Concerning sensitivity, patients treated with in-office bleaching reported more tooth sensitivity than the at-home group only on the first day after bleaching started, without significant differences in the other periods evaluated (p>0.05). Conclusions At-home and in-office bleaching, preceded by a desensitizing agent, were effective for vital teeth bleaching and 10% carbamide peroxide produced a higher whitening effect than 35% hydrogen peroxide in the short time evaluation. Tooth sensitivity rates were similar for the two techniques tested.

Resumo Introdução A saúde pública no Brasil sofreu grandes mudanças nas últimas décadas. Objetivo Descrever o panorama da produção odontológica realizada pelo SUS de 1999 a 2017 no Brasil e suas macrorregiões. Método Os dados foram obtidos no Sistema de Informação Ambulatorial (SIA-SUS) e do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). Foram criadas taxas de procedimentos (por 100 mil habitantes/ano) realizados em cada macrorregião: procedimentos restauradores, protéticos, coletivos, endodontia, exodontia, periodontia e preventivos de 1999 a 2017. Abstract: The present study aimed to estimate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental care procedures in the Public Health System in Brazil. A retrospective, ecological study was carried out, comprising 5,564 Brazilian municipalities. The number of dental procedures (per 100,000 inhabitants) performed in the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) was the outcome. The impact of the pandemic was estimated by comparing the rate of procedures for each month of 2020 with the rates observed in the equivalent months in 2019, considering the period from March to August. Regulatory legislation regarding restrictions on dental care, issued by the state governments of 27 Brazilian federative units, was used for mediation analysis. A 55% reduction was observed in March for all procedures (IRR = 0.45, 95%CI 0.39–0.51), while in the other months, the rate of reduction remained ≥ 88%. The biggest decrease was observed in collective preventive procedures (reduction ≥99%) between April and August. Procedures that were less likely to generate aerosols (tooth extraction and prosthetic) and emergencies showed the smallest reduction. The reduction was not mediated by the restrictions imposed by state governments (p>0.05). The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was noteworthy in terms of the decrease in the number of dental procedures carried out in the Brazilian Public Dental Service. The lack of access, the delay of elective procedures and the lack of preventive collective procedures could result in an overburdened system, post-Pandemic.

Aim: The literature has not yet reported investigations about the effect of laser photobiomodulation (LPBM) over the cytotoxicity of drugs for endodontic treatments. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the effect of the association between LPBM and intracanal medications on fibroblasts viability in different exposure times. Methods: Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and iodoform (IO) were used pure or associated to LPBM. Eluates of medications were prepared and placed in contact with the cells in three different periods: 24h, 48h and 72h. Laser irradiation (emitting radiation λ 660nm, power density of 10mW, energy density of 3 J/cm²) has been performed in two sessions within a six hour interval, for 12s per well. After each experimental time, the colorimetric assay (MTT) has been performed. Statistical analysis was applied for Mann-Whitney test with 5% α error admitted test. Results: At 24h, the use of LPBM did not increase cell viability while after 72h cell proliferation was stimulated in the group without medications. LPBM application did not increase cell viability in Ca(OH)2 group and IO at any tested time. Ca(OH)2 cytotoxicity at 24h was higher than iodoform, while at 72h not difference was observed. Therefore, after 72 hours was no statistical difference between the IO and Ca(OH)2 groups. Conclusion: LPBM was able to increase cell viability in 72h in the group without medication, although no improvement was observed in the other groups. Thus, LPBM was not able to reduce the cytotoxic effects of the materials on fibroblasts in vitro.

Abstract: This study aimed to verify, through a longitudinal follow-up, the pre-, peri- and postnatal factors associated with the eruption of deciduous teeth. The study was nested in a Birth Cohort Study conducted in Pelotas, a Southern Brazilian city. Mothers were followed prenatally and their children were followed-up perinatally, at 3 and 12 months of age. The outcome was the number of teeth at 12 months, and exploratory variables included maternal habits and characteristics, anthropometric measures of children and mothers, and socioeconomic and demographic information. Data were collected through interviews with the mother and children’s clinical exam. Poisson regression models were used for the analysis. Participants included 4,014 children with a mean number of erupted teeth at 12 months of 5.50. After adjustments, a lower mean number of teeth was observed in children from non-white mothers, early preterm children, and shorter children at birth and at 12 months. A higher number of teeth was observed for mothers with excessive weight gain during pregnancy, mothers who smoked during pregnancy, weightier children at birth and at 12 months, and for children with larger heads at birth and at 12 months. Our findings suggest that maternal and children characteristics influenced primary tooth eruption.

ABSTRACT: Objective: To evaluate all-cause mortality in approximately three years of follow-up and related sociodemographic, behavioral and health factors in community-dwelling older adults in Pelotas, RS. Methods: This was a longitudinal observational study that included 1,451 older adults (≥ 60 years) who were interviewed in 2014. Information on mortality was collected from their households in 2016–2017 and confirmed with the Epidemiological Surveillance department of the city and by documents from family members. Associations between mortality and independent variables were assessed by crude and multiple Cox regression, with hazard ratio with respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Results: Almost 10% (n = 145) of the participants died during an average of 2.5 years of follow-up, with a higher frequency of deaths among males (12.9%), ?80 years (25.2%), widowhood (15.0%), no education (13.8%) and who did not work (10.5%). Factors associated with higher mortality were: being a male (HR = 2.8; 95%CI 1.9 – 4.2), age ?80 years (HR = 3.9; 95%CI 2.4 – 6.2), widowhood (HR = 2.2; 95%CI 1.4 – 3.7), physical inactivity (HR = 2.3; 95%CI 1.1 – 4..6), current smoking (HR = 2.1; 95%CI 1.2 – 3.6), hospitalizations in the previous year (HR = 2.0; 95%CI 1.2 – 3.2), depressive symptoms (HR = 2.0; 95%CI 1.2 – 3,4) and dependence for two or more daily life activities (HR = 3.1; 95%CI 1,7 – 5.7). Conclusion: The identification of factors that increased the risk of early death makes it possible to improve public policies aimed at controlling the modifiable risk factors that can lead to aging with a better quality of life.

Resumo Objetivo Analisar a associação entre dor dentária, uso de serviços odontológicos e absenteísmo escolar em adolescentes brasileiros. Métodos Estudo transversal, sobre dados da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar (PeNSE 2015). A variável dependente do estudo foi o absenteísmo escolar por motivo de saúde nos últimos 12 meses. Características socioeconômicas, dor dentária e utilização de serviços odontológicos foram as variáveis independentes avaliadas. Empregou-se regressão logística, para estimar odds ratio (OR) e respectivos intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC95%). Resultados Foram incluídos 102.072 escolares. A prevalência de absenteísmo por motivo de saúde foi de 53,7% (IC95% 53,2;54,3). Pela análise ajustada, houve associação entre dor dentária e absenteísmo (OR=1,35 - IC95% 1,26;1,45), e aumento na ocorrência de absenteísmo conforme o maior número de consultas odontológicas. Conclusão Os resultados sugerem que a dor dentária e a frequência de consultas odontológicas podem estar relacionadas ao absenteísmo escolar.

Mood disorders such as stress and depression can promote alterations of several hormones Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate if symptoms of depression and stress are associated with halitosis. The hypothesis is that halitosis is associated with stress and depression symptoms. Methods: All university students’ entrants in the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) were invited to participate. Self-reported halitosis was measured using a visual analog scale. Students were also asked about the presence of halitosis perceived by close individuals. The stress level was measured using a modified version of the Perceived Stress Scale and symptoms of depression were screened by Patient Health Questionnaire-2. Poisson Regression Models were performed. Results: Of a total of 2,058 students who participated in the study, only 16% of them have reported not having any degree of halitosis and 17.6% were informed of closed individuals having halitosis. After adjustments, stress and depression symptoms remained associated with halitosis selfreported. Individuals from the higher stressed quartile presented higher scores of halitosis (RR 1.37 CI95% [1.24–1.53]). Students who presented depressive symptoms showed higher scores of self-perceived halitosis (RR 1.20 CI95% [1.10–1.32]). When the association of stress and halitosis reported by close individuals was tested, symptoms of depression lost the association in the adjusted model, while individuals from the highest quartile from stress remained associated (PR 1.36 CI95% [1.02–1.81]). Conclusion: Halitosis was associated with stress even after control for oral health and socioeconomic variables.

Abstract: The aim of our study was to compare normative need for dental prosthesis (estimated by dentists) with subjective need (self-reported) by testing the accuracy and agreement and comparing direction and magnitude of associations with independent variables using both as outcomes. A representative sample of a birth cohort study (n = 900) was assessed at 31 years of age. Subjective need was obtained from questionnaire. Both normative and subjective need variables were dichotomized in (a) individuals with need for dental prosthesis and (b) without need for dental prosthesis. Accuracy was assessed by sensitivity (SE), specificity (SP), positive (PPV) and negative (NPV) predictive values. Agreement of normative and subjective need was assessed estimating kappa index. Sex, income, educational level, use of dental services and self-reported oral health were used to compare the associations with normative and subjective need. Prevalence of normative need was 48.9% and subjective need was 34.9%. Agreement (kappa: 0.43) and accuracy between normative and subjective need for dental prosthesis was low (SE: 56.5, 95%CI: 50.3-62.6; SP: 85.8, 95%CI: 81.1-89.7; PPV: 79.1, 95%CI: 72.6-84.7; NPV: 67.3, 95%CI: 62.1-72.2). When considering individuals with loss in anterior teeth, results showed a good agreement (kappa: 0.82) and accuracy between normative and subjective need (SE: 93.3, 95%CI: 68.1-99.8; SP: 88.9, 95%CI: 51.8-99.7; PPV: 93.3, 95%CI: 68.1-99.8; NPV: 88.9, 95%CI: 51.8-99.7). Direction and magnitude of associations with normative and subjective need were similar. Thus, normative need for dental prosthesis differs from subjective need in adults, except when anterior losses are present.

Aim: To investigate the association between obesity, overweight, and tooth loss due to caries among university students of (Federal University of Pelotas) in southern Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional study with all first-year students who regularly enrolled in the first semester of 2016 who were invited to respond to a self-administered questionnaire contain socioeconomic and demographic; psychosocial; oral health; behavioral questions. The body mass index (BMI) was calculated through the self-reported data of weight and height. The main outcome of the present study was determined by the person’s that answer having had at least one tooth extracted due to caries. A Poisson regression using a backward stepwise procedure was performed. Two models were tested: i) including socioeconomic and behavioral variables; ii) without behavioral variables. Results: From 3,237 eligible students, 2,089 (64.5%) participated in the present study. Almost 23% of students presented overweight and 8.4% obesity, whereas 362 individuals (17.5%) reported having had at least one tooth extracted due to caries. Regarding the final model adjusted by behavioral variables, it was observed that obese university students presented a 32.0% higher prevalence of tooth loss (PR=0.32,CI95%[1.17–1.49]). However, overweight was not associated with tooth loss in the present sample. When the model was not associated with behavioral variables, overweight was associated with tooth loss (PR=1.44; CI95%[1.15–1.81]), just as obesity (PR=2.13; CI95%[1.63 – 2.78]). Conclusions: Obesity and overweight were associated with tooth loss due to caries in the present sample of university students.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of severe traumatic dental injuries on the Oral Health related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) of preschool children. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with children aged 2 to 5 years and their mothers, in Pelotas/ Brazil Southern. The Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) was applied to assess the perception of mothers about children’s OHRQoL. Abstract Clinical interventions in dental practice should be determined based on the best scientific evidence available. Well-designed randomized clinical trials (RCTs) provide important evidence supporting the efficacy of interventions and are usually considered as the best primary evidence. However, the strict criteria adopted by most RCTs reduce their external validity since some findings from these studies might not work under usual conditions. On the other hand, practice-based research (PBR) studies have been designed to better define the effectiveness of clinical interventions under settings closer to “real-world” conditions. Therefore, this review aimed to describe different PBR designs discussing some advantages and limitations of such studies. The stimulus to organization PBR networks is discussed since the studies performed by these networks involve large number of clinicians and important conclusions can be drawn. Designs of observational studies including surveys and cohort studies based on practice are presented. Survey methods are important to know the behavior of practitioners regarding diagnostic and decision of treatment. Cohorts allow assessing different cofounders contributing to some outcome since large sample sizes and long follow-up periods can be observed in some of these studies. Pragmatic trials designed to take place in real-world clinical practice settings are also discussed as a useful design to assess the effectiveness of clinical interventions. In conclusion, this review sought to present PBR studies as alternative designs to answer clinical questions, but not replacing randomized clinical trials.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To verify the prevalence and factors associated with regular use of dental services in university students of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel). METHODS This cross-sectional study interviewed 1,865 students aged 18 years or older, starting bachelor’s degrees in 2017, enrolled in the second academic semester of 2017 and in the first of 2018 in classroom courses at UFPel. We considered regular users those who reported regularly going to the dentist with or without perceived dental problems. To test factors associated with regular use of dental services, demographic, socioeconomic and oral health variables were collected. Statistical analyses were based on Poisson regression models. RESULTS The prevalence of regular use of dental services was 45.0% (95%CI 42.7–47.3). University students of high economic class (PR = 1.47; 95%CI 0.91–2.36), with last private dental appointment (PR = 1.29; 95%CI 1.03–1.61), positive self-perception of oral health (PR = 2.33; 95%CI 1.79–3.03) and no report of toothache in the last six months (PR = 1.22; 95%CI 1.03–1.45) showed higher prevalence of regular use of dental services. CONCLUSION The results point to inequalities in the regular use of dental services related to socioeconomic factors and a lower use among university students with worse oral health conditions. These results suggest that public health prevention and promotion policies in higher education institutions must be carried out to ensure quality of life among these young adults.
