However, it is unlikely for a fall to cause ocular injury unless there is a disruption in the protective maneuvers that shield the face. We suspect ocular injury may be an early indicator of systemic or neurologic degeneration. This study investigates the 5-year incidence of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases in older patients who sustained ocular or periorbital injuries.Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study. The study population included 141 patients over the age of 65 who sustained trauma to the eye, orbit, or eyelid between April 2011 and June 2016. The control population included 141 patients with a similar range of comorbidities who received cataract surgery during the same period. The study measured new diagnoses of various disorders during the 5-year period following presentation.Results: There were a total of 180 females and 102 males in the study. The mean ages of the control and subject group were 76 and 81.8, respectively. Of our twelve tested comorbidity types, patients that suffered a periocular trauma were more likely to develop heart failure (p=0.00244), dementia (p=0.00002), Alzheimer’s disease (p=0.00087), and vascular disease (p=0.00037).Conclusion: Geriatric patients who sustained ocular and periocular injuries had a greater incidence of heart failure, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and atherosclerosis diagnoses in the 5-year period following injury. The findings of this study suggest that periocular trauma may be an early indicator of underlying degenerative or systemic disease. Ophthalmologists should ensure proper primary care follow-up in conjunction with recovery from injury.Keywords: ocular injury, comorbidities, eye injury, degenerative disease

This study investigates the time-to-surgery and visual outcomes of open globe injury patients in North Carolina that were transferred to our institution before receiving surgical intervention as compared to those that were not transferred.Patients and methods: This is a retrospective cohort study using data from UNC Hospitals trauma registry. Demographics, time of injury, final clinical outcomes, time to surgical intervention, and transfer history were extracted and analyzed. The study population includes open globe injury patients of all ages that were seen and treated at our institution from 2005 to 2020. Patients were divided based on transfer history. The transfer group consisted of patients who were transferred from an outside hospital to our tertiary care facility for surgical treatment. The non-transfer group consisted of patients who arrived at our tertiary care facility directly after injury.Results: In total, 238 open globe injuries were evaluated. Of those, 197 were transferred and 41 were not transferred. Compared to non-transfer patients, transfer patients had longer delays between injury and surgery, between presentation at the initial ED and surgery, and between injury and arrival at the tertiary care center. On average, the delay between injury and surgical intervention was 3 hours and 51 minutes longer for transfer patients compared to non-transfer patients. Eight patients in the transfer group were delayed > 24 hours due to inter-hospital transfer. Additionally, transfer patients on average suffered from poorer final visual acuities, with an average final visual acuity of 1.84 logMAR in the transfer group and 1.35 logMAR in the non-transfer group.Conclusion: Our study found that inter-hospital transfer leads to significant delays in primary closure of open globe injuries. Injuries that were transferred to a tertiary care center before receiving surgical intervention on average resulted in worse final visual acuities.Keywords: eye injury, open globe injury, ocular trauma, surgery, visual outcomes, transfer

Despite copious irrigation of both eyes, she developed a case of Euphorbia keratouveitis that was typical in its course. Exposure to plant sap from this species should be treated much like an alkaline chemical injury as the pH of the ocular surface may be elevated. Abstract

Subcortical brain structures are integral to motion, consciousness, emotions and learning. We identified common genetic variation related to the volumes of the nucleus accumbens, amygdala, brainstem, caudate nucleus, globus pallidus, putamen and thalamus, using genome-wide association analyses in almost 40,000 individuals from CHARGE, ENIGMA and UK Biobank. We show that variability in subcortical volumes is heritable, and identify 48 significantly associated loci (40 novel at the time of analysis). Annotation of these loci by utilizing gene expression, methylation and neuropathological data identified 199 genes putatively implicated in neurodevelopment, synaptic signaling, axonal transport, apoptosis, inflammation/infection and susceptibility to neurological disorders. This set of genes is significantly enriched for Drosophila orthologs associated with neurodevelopmental phenotypes, suggesting evolutionarily conserved mechanisms. Our findings uncover novel biology and potential drug targets underlying brain development and disease.

9. Saturn's Equatorial Oscillation: Evidence of Descending Thermal Structure from Cassini Radio Occultations

Abstract

A series of near-equatorial radio occultations of Cassini by Saturn occurred in 2005 and again in 2009-2010. Comparison of the temperature-pressure profiles obtained from the two sets of occultations shows evidence of a descending pattern in the stratosphere that is similar to those associated with equatorial oscillations in Earth's middle atmosphere. This is the first time that this descent has been observed in another planetary atmosphere. If absorption of upwardly propagating waves drives the descent, the implied absorbed flux is 0.05 square meters per square second at least as large if not greater than on Earth.

Abstract

Subcortical brain structures are integral to motion, consciousness, emotions and learning. We identified common genetic variation related to the volumes of the nucleus accumbens, amygdala, brainstem, caudate nucleus, globus pallidus, putamen and thalamus, using genome-wide association analyses in almost 40,000 individuals from CHARGE, ENIGMA and UK Biobank. We show that variability in subcortical volumes is heritable, and identify 48 significantly associated loci (40 novel at the time of analysis). Annotation of these loci by utilizing gene expression, methylation and neuropathological data identified 199 genes putatively implicated in neurodevelopment, synaptic signaling, axonal transport, apoptosis, inflammation/infection and susceptibility to neurological disorders. This set of genes is significantly enriched for Drosophila orthologs associated with neurodevelopmental phenotypes, suggesting evolutionarily conserved mechanisms. Our findings uncover novel biology and potential drug targets underlying brain development and disease.

Abstract

Doppler tracking experiments using the earth and a distant spacecraft as separated test masses have been used for gravitational wave searches in the low-frequency band. Here we describe the experiment, including the transfer functions of the signals and noises to the Doppler observable, and present the noise statistics and compare them with the pre-experiment noise budget.

Abstract

The hippocampal formation is a brain structure integrally involved in episodic memory, spatial navigation, cognition and stress responsiveness. Structural abnormalities in hippocampal volume and shape are found in several common neuropsychiatric disorders. To identify the genetic underpinnings of hippocampal structure here we perform a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 33,536 individuals and discover six independent loci significantly associated with hippocampal volume, four of them novel. Of the novel loci, three lie within genes (ASTN2, DPP4 and MAST4) and one is found 200 kb upstream of SHH. A hippocampal subfield analysis shows that a locus within the MSRB3 gene shows evidence of a localized effect along the dentate gyrus, subiculum, CA1 and fissure. Further, we show that genetic variants associated with decreased hippocampal volume are also associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (rg =-0.155). Our findings suggest novel biological pathways through which human genetic variation influences hippocampal volume and risk for neuropsychiatric illness.

Abstract

Whether novel risk variants of Alzheimer's disease (AD) identified through genome-wide association studies also influence magnetic resonance imaging-based intermediate phenotypes of AD in the general population is unclear. We studied association of 24 AD risk loci with intracranial volume, total brain volume, hippocampal volume (HV), white matter hyperintensity burden, and brain infarcts in a meta-analysis of genetic association studies from large population-based samples (N= 8175-11,550). In single-SNP based tests, AD risk allele of APOE (rs2075650) was associated with smaller HV (. p= 0.0054) and CD33 (rs3865444) with smaller intracranial volume (. p= 0.0058). In gene-based tests, there was associations of HLA-DRB1 with total brain volume (. p= 0.0006) and BIN1 with HV (. p= 0.00089). Aweighted AD genetic risk score was associated with smaller HV (beta ± SE=-0.047 ± 0.013, p= 0.00041), even after excluding the APOE locus (. p= 0.029). However, only association of AD genetic risk score with HV, including APOE, was significant after multiple testing correction (including number of independent phenotypes tested). These results suggest that novel AD genetic risk variants may contribute to structural brain aging in nondemented older community persons.

24. Control of peripheral light-harvesting complex synthesis by a bacteriophytochrome in the aerobic photosynthetic bacterium Bradyrhizobium strain BTAi1

Abstract

The recent sequence analysis of the photosynthetic and plant-symbiotic Bradyrhizobium sp. strain BTAi1 revealed the unexpected presence of a pucBA operon encoding the apoproteins of peripheral light-harvesting (LH) complexes. This pucBA operon is found close to a bacteriophytochrome gene (BphP3(B) (BTAi1)) and a two-component transcriptional regulator gene (TFBTAi1 gene). In this study, we show that BphP3B BTAi1 acts as a bona fide bacteriophytochrome and controls, according to light conditions, the expression of the pucBA operon found in its vicinity. This light regulatory pathway is very similar to the one previously described for chromo-BphP4(Rp) in Rhodopseudomonas palustris and conducts the synthesis of a peripheral LH complex. This LH complex presents a single absorption band at low temperature, centered at 803 nm. Fluorescence emission analysis of intact cells indicates that this peripheral LH complex does not act as an efficient light antenna. One putative function of this LH complex could be to evacuate excess light energy in order to protect Bradyrhizobium strain BTAi1, an aerobic anoxygenic photosynthetic bacterium, against photooxidative damage during photosynthesis.

01 mei 2012, Contains fulltext : 110608.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), Aging is associated with reductions in hippocampal volume that are accelerated by Alzheimer's disease and vascular risk factors. Our genome-wide association study (GWAS) of dementia-free persons (n = 9,232) identified 46 SNPs at four loci with P values of <4.0 x 10(-7). In two additional samples (n = 2,318), associations were replicated at 12q14 within MSRB3-WIF1 (discovery and replication; rs17178006; P = 5.3 x 10(-11)) and at 12q24 near HRK-FBXW8 (rs7294919; P = 2.9 x 10(-11)). Remaining associations included one SNP at 2q24 within DPP4 (rs6741949; P = 2.9 x 10(-7)) and nine SNPs at 9p33 within ASTN2 (rs7852872; P = 1.0 x 10(-7)); along with the chromosome 12 associations, these loci were also associated with hippocampal volume (P < 0.05) in a third younger, more heterogeneous sample (n = 7,794). The SNP in ASTN2 also showed suggestive association with decline in cognition in a largely independent sample (n = 1,563). These associations implicate genes related to apoptosis (HRK), development (WIF1), oxidative stress (MSR3B), ubiquitination (FBXW8) and neuronal migration (ASTN2), as well as enzymes targeted by new diabetes medications (DPP4), indicating new genetic influences on hippocampal size and possibly the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

Abstract

On repetition priming tasks, memory is measured indirectly as a change in performance due to recent experience. It is often functionally and neurally dissociated from performance on explicit memory tasks, which directly measure conscious recall or recognition of recent events. Repetition priming has therefore been extensively studied in normal aging and Alzheimer's disease, which feature mild to severe changes in explicit memory. Initial studies indicated that repetition priming was immune to the effects of aging and greatly reduced in Alzheimer's disease (AD). As more studies have been performed, however, these initial conclusions appear less clear than before and, in the case of AD, actually misleading. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of this rapidly expanding literature, articulate the issues that are critical to interpreting the empirical results, and discuss what new conclusions are suggested by the overall pattern of findings. Abstract

Purpose of Review: The purpose of this review is to present two cases of overlap syndrome, or concurrent pigment dispersion syndrome and pseudoexfoliation syndrome. The summary of existing literature highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and potential treatment options of overlap syndrome., Recent Findings: The cases describe two patients with overlap syndrome and resulting progressive glaucoma. The condition tends to present after age 50 years old, with presence of both pseudoexfoliative material and pigment dispersion signs. The pigment dispersion syndrome may be quiescent at the time of pseudoexfoliation onset and may have gone undiagnosed. This form of glaucoma poses challenges in controlling intraocular pressure and may progress rapidly, often requiring surgical intervention., Summary: This paper reviews the common examination findings of pigment dispersion syndrome and pseudoexfoliation, which may aid clinicians in the diagnosis of the rare condition, overlap syndrome. The connection between the two conditions remains unclear, though studies of possible genetic associations are underway. The two-hit theory, or initial damage to the trabecular meshwork increasing susceptibility to future damage, is plausible given the severe nature of the condition. Background/Objectives : This study investigates whether there is an increased propensity to systemic conditions in patients with both age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma in order to provide greater insight into patients' overall health and response to physiologic stress. Methods : A large retrospective dataset review was conducted between April 2004 and June 2018, distinguishing four groups based on international classification of diseases (ICD) codes: glaucoma only, AMD only, glaucoma and AMD, and cataracts only (as an age-matched control). The systemic disease prevalence of each group was calculated, and a Friedman analysis was used to compare the prevalence between the groups. Results : This study identified 5243 patients with glaucoma only, 6726 with AMD only, 402 with combined disease, and 25,450 with cataracts only. Age and racial distributions varied between groups in a predictable manner. Two conditions, heart failure (HF) and dementia, had a statistically higher prevalence in patients with both glaucoma and AMD compared to those with glaucoma alone (HF p = 0.036, dementia p = 0.024) and cataracts alone (HF p = 0.003, dementia p = 0.036). There was no significant difference observed in terms of ethnicity and gender among the different disease groups ( p > 0.05). Conclusions : Both AMD and glaucoma individually portend a higher rate of comorbidities than age-matched controls. Patients with concomitant AMD and glaucoma demonstrate a uniquely higher prevalence of heart failure and dementia than those with either disease alone. The underlying association and pathologic mechanisms warrant further investigation to improve the overall health management and prognostication for these individuals.

43. Investigating Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter in Prone Position Spinal Surgery Patients: A Pilot Study.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of intraoperative positioning and ocular immobility on the amount of cerebrospinal fluid around the optic nerve in patients undergoing prone spinal surgery by measuring the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) using ultrasound., Methods: Consecutive participants ( n = 15 patients, 30 eyes) were scanned preoperatively, intraoperatively approximately 20 minutes before the end of the surgery, and postoperatively in the post-anesthesia care unit at least 10 min after the completion of the surgery at one academic hospital., Results: On average, patients who underwent prone spinal surgery had a 21% increase in ONSD intraoperatively, with a positive time-dependent relationship with the overall length of surgery ( P < 0.001). ONSDs postoperatively returned to baseline and were not significantly different from preoperative measurements., Conclusion: Our findings suggest pooling and inadequate clearance of perioptic cerebrospinal fluid during prone spinal surgery that improves following termination of the procedure and return of the patient to an upright position., Competing Interests: None., (Copyright © 2024 Rahangdale et al.)

44. Game changer-talent transfer pathways in sport: a systematic review.

Abstract

Research Question: Talent transfer, an accelerated sport pathway to expertise, holds considerable appeal for sports organisations. As an emerging area of academic research across a range of sport disciplines, there is opportunity for to advance knowledge and practice. This review aimed to (a) explore how talent transfer has been defined, to develop a synthesised definition; (b) systematically identify the factors that influence talent transfer; and (c) investigate how theory underpins and enhances understanding of talent transfer., Research Methods: A systematic review was conducted of 12 peer-reviewed journal articles on talent transfer using the PRISMA approach., Results and Findings: Aiming for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary perspective, the results: introduce a clear, synthesised conceptualisation of talent transfer as an accelerated sport pathway in which a highly trained athlete in one sport (donor sport), transitions to a new sport (recipient sport) with the potential of achieving high-performance success; systematically map influencing factors; and outline considered theories. Factors influencing talent transfer span individual, task-related, and environmental constraints. The review exposes a scarcity of theoretical foundation in current research, suggesting ecological dynamics as a promising approach to advance research and practice., Implications: Practical and theoretical implications arise, emphasising the usefulness of a synthesised definition and a multifactorial approach for designing, implementing, evaluating, and researching talent transfer pathways. Abstract

Synthetic meat made from animal cells will transform how we eat. It will reduce suffering by eliminating the need to raise and slaughter animals. But it will also have big public health benefits if it becomes widely consumed. In this paper, we discuss how "clean meat" can reduce the risks associated with intensive animal farming, including antibiotic resistance, environmental pollution, and zoonotic viral diseases like influenza and coronavirus. Since the most common objection to clean meat is that some people find it "disgusting" or "unnatural," we explore the psychology of disgust to find possible counter-measures. We argue that the public health benefits of clean meat give us strong moral reasons to promote its development and consumption in a way that the public is likely to support. We end by depicting the change from farmed animals to clean meat as a collective action problem and suggest that social norms rather than coercive laws should be employed to solve the problem., (© 2023. Abstract

Talent transfer has enabled elite athletes to be successful in another sport, with great potential in para-sport. Previous research suggests that similarities between donor and recipient sports may facilitate talent transfer; however, this remains unclear in para-sport. This study investigated patterns between donor and recipient sports' characteristics, identifying the impact on talent transfer in para-sport. An Australian case study utilizing secondary data of 38 Australian Paralympians who competed at the Paralympic Games from 2000 through 2020 was analyzed. Results demonstrated that similarities between sports were not significantly associated with successful talent transfers between Paralympic sports. Understanding patterns associated with successful Paralympic talent transfers offers a foundation of knowledge for designing and developing future talent-transfer pathways and research. Based on this study, it is recommended that sport administrators and practitioners explore greater opportunity for talent transfer in para-sport, rather than limiting talent-transfer opportunities based on athletes' donor sports.

48. Macrophakia: The characterization of a novel lens condition.

Abstract

Purpose: To present a novel characterization of a lens condition termed macrophakia which includes large or proportionally large lenses with shallow anterior chamber dimensions that are statistically deviant of a normal population., Observations: We identified five eyes from three cases to have significantly large lens parameters and small anterior chamber depths. In all five eyes, the anterior chamber depth was less than 2 mm and the anterior chamber depth to lens thickness ratio was two standard deviations outside the normative range of lens and chamber measurements. These large lenses were all observed in the absence of typical pathology and other biometric abnormalities., Conclusions and Importance: A novel lens characterization termed macrophakia is proposed to describe large or proportionately large lenses. 50. A Retrospective Cohort Study on the Difficulties of Diagnosing and Managing Glaucoma in Patients with Coexistent Neurodegenerative Disease.

Abstract

Aim: To investigate the limitations of diagnosing glaucoma in patients with coexistent neurodegenerative disease (NDD) by collecting information on demographics, examination findings, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual field (VF) tests., Materials and Methods: Retrospective cohort study of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and coexistent dementia, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease (PD), or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) from 2014 to 2020. We included patients with a minimum of 3 years of follow-up. Demographics, ophthalmic exam, OCT, and VF findings were reported and compared across NDD groups using the Chi-squared and analysis of variance tests., Results: We included 199 patients with glaucoma and coexistent NDD, including dementia (51.3%), CVA (11.2%), PD (18.1%), and MS (19.6%). Cupping, neuroretinal rim thinning, pallor, and peripapillary atrophy of the optic nerve were most frequently observed. There was a high number of missing values from OCT to VF tests, and zero patients had a complete OCT or VF test. Additionally, 67.8 and 77.4% of patients received <1 OCT and VF/year, respectively. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning was observed most frequently in the superior (33.2% OD and 30.7% OS) and inferior (25.6% OD and 30.2% OS) quadrants, with the most significant thinning seen in CVA patients compared to other NDDs ( p < 0.05). Glaucoma hemifield tests (GHTs) were abnormal in 23.1% OD and 22.6% OS, and the average mean deviation was -7.43 [standard deviation (SD) 8.23] OD and -8.79 (SD 7.99) OS., Conclusion: The OCT and VF tests are frequently unavailable and may be confounded in patients with coexistent glaucoma and NDDs, complicating glaucoma diagnosis and management., Clinical Significance: Diagnosing and managing glaucoma in patients with coexistent NDD is difficult, given the lack of available and reliable OCT and VF testing data.
