Abstract

Several computer architecture issues regarding the design of semiconductor digital circuits were discussed. These include the feasibility of using picosecond gate delays, pipelining, synchronous circuits, multiple execution units and cache memories to enable the development of superconductive microprocessors. The advantages and disadvantages of each type of architecture were evaluated.

Abstract

Attention is given to the detection of a single X-ray burst from a new burst source, which is suggested to be either the bright bulge source GX13 + 1, or 1 N1812 - 182; these are respectively listed in the HEAO-1 Catalog of Wood (1984) as possessing equivalent strengths of about 165 and 29 UFU. Only the former of the two sources is listed in the 4 U Catalog, however, which gives it a maximum level of 400 UFU and a variability factor of 3.

Abstract

DR. JOHN MCCARTHY. A 29-year-old man, previously in good health, was admitted to Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, California, after sustaining severe multiple traumatic injuries in a fall from his motorcycle. The significant findings on admission were related to his left lower extremity; there was a gaping laceration of the distal anterior thigh, with complete transverse severance of the quadriceps muscle group and a fractured femur protruding through the wound. Also evident were compound fractures of the tibia and fibula, with gaping lacerations anteriorly and posteriorly. The left foot was cool and pale. An arteriogram revealed partial disruption of the arterial blood supply to the extremity. The patient was given tetanus-diphtheria toxoid, tetanus immune globulin, and 1 g of cefazolin intravenously for wound prophylaxis. Open reduction and internal fixation of the comminuted distal tibia-fibula fractures were performed. Traction pins were placed in the distal femur; the quadriceps muscle was approximated, and the multiple lacerations were irrigated and repaired. Treatment with cefazolin (1 g every 8 hours) was continued postoperatively. The left foot became warmer, and a pulse detectable by Doppler examination was found after surgery. Subsequently, the patient underwent an anterior compartment fasciotomy, and pulses in the left foot continued to improve. On the fifth day of hospitalization, the patient developed a fever up to 102?F that was accompanied by shortness of breath; he denied a history of chest pain, cough, sputum production, or hemoptysis. He complained of difficulty in speaking clearly, weakness of all of his limbs, and increased pain in his left lower extremity. Abstract

Female runners are reported to be more prone to develop specific knee joint injuries than males. It has been suggested that increased frontal plane joint loading might be related to the incidence of these knee injuries in running. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if frontal plane knee and hip joint kinematics and kinetics are gender-specific in runners with high mileage. 3D-kinematics and kinetics were recorded from 16 female and 16 male runners at a speed of 3 m/s, 4 m/s, and 5 m/s. Frontal plane joint angles and joint moments were ascertained and compared between genders among speed conditions. Across all speed conditions, females showed increased hip adduction and reduced knee adduction angles compared to males (p < 0.003). The initial peak in the hip adduction moment was enhanced in females (p = 0.003). Additionally, the hip adduction impulse showed a trend towards an increase in females at slow running speed (p = 0.07). Hip and knee frontal plane joint kinematics are gender-specific. In addition, there are indications that frontal plane joint loading is increased in female runners. Future research should focus on the relationship of these observations regarding overuse running injuries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
