2. The Didactic Organization of Pictorial Reality in the New Language Teaching Media.

Abstract

High on the list of today's educational priorities is the effective programing of pictorial stimuli as language teaching tools. The value of any image depends on its content of information, and essential for clear comprehension of any picture are the principles of causality, parallelism, and contrast or negative comparison. Both artist and teacher must avoid visual ambiguity, unnatural visualization, distortion of meaning, and must stress meaningful interpolation. A line drawing is more valuable than a photograph because of its amplified potential as an abstraction and its low cost, but it is useless as an effective classroom audiovisual aid if it needs detailed explanations. Coordinated pictorial devices for language instruction could best be developed by a team of audiovisual researchers, including artists, methodologists, graphic experts, and psychologists. After briefly discussing the causes and meaning of laughter, the phenomenon of the comic, the value of humor, and the difference between cruelty and "mellow" humor, the article examines the role of humor in the language class. It concludes that humor, meeting the highest standards, both textual and pictorial, provides a valuable motivational technique, for it arouses student interest and helps establish a relaxed pupil-teacher relationship. 9. Comic Cassettes for Language Classes.

The development of animated cartoon sequences showing various kinds of mime and gesture in humorous situations is recommended as a useful teaching aid in language learning. Humor as a significant element in the content of pictorial aids is stressed, and the appropriate types of humor are identified and illustrated. 42. Beta-Adrenergic Blockade of the Lung

Abstract

Beta-adrenergic blocking agents are widely used to treat disorders of cardiac rhythm and rate, angina, and hypertension. Propranolol is the most widely used β-adrenergic blocking agent in this country. Because of its nonselective β-adrenergic blocking effect, propranolol may be associated with significant bronchoconstriction in asthmatic subjects and in some patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Since tolamolol, a new β-adrenergic blocking agent, has cardioselectivity in animals, we studied asthmatic subjects for six hours on three separate days in a double-blind crossover comparison of oral therapy with 40 mg of propranolol, its β-adrenergic blocking equivalent dose of tolamolol (50 mg), and a high dose of tolamolol (100 mg). AD three dosages had equipotent effects on heart rate and systolic pressure. The 50-mg dose of tolamolol had no effect on pulmonary function over six hours; however, both propranolol (40 mg) and the 100-mg dose of tolamolol had equivalent deleterious effects on airway resistance and on rates of expiratory flow. We conclude that the cardioselectivity of tolamolol is dose-limited but is present at the dosage of 50 mg, which is equivalent to the usual antiarrhythmic β-adrenergic blocking dose of propranolol (40 mg).

43. Adverse Effect of Propranolol on Airway Function in Nonasthmatic Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease

Abstract

Bronchomotor tone is, in part, under β-adrenergic control, and β-adrenergic agonists are commonly used in the therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). β-adrenergic blockade with propranolol is contraindicated in asthmatic patients, yet little is known of its effect in patients with COPD. We studied 13 patients with COPD in a random-entry, double-blind crossover comparison of oral propranolol, 40 mg, and oral placebo on separate days. Pulmonary function worsened after administration of propranolol. Significant differences were present between the drugs' effect on heart rate, airway resistance, specific resistance, and flow rates at one hour, and persisting through four hours (p < 0.01). Propranolol may have a deleterious effect on pulmonary function in nonasthmatic COPD. We conclude that when propranolol is to be used in patients with COPD, the short- and long-term effects on airways should be measured sequentially.

Abstract

The work contained in this report encompasses an attempt to correlate the chemical and physical structure of a polymer with its ablative performance. A broad range of epoxy resins and curing agents were employed as model systems. Various tools such as 'alpha rod' testing, thermogravimetric analysis, crosslink density studies, and infrared-red spectroscopy were used in making this correlation. The epoxy novolac type resin performed the best of all the epoxy resins in the 'alpha rod' oxy-acetylene torch test while nadic methyl anhydride performed as the best curing agent for epoxy resins under these ablative conditions. The use of a refractory filler such as SiO2 was found to be necessary for good performance. The mechanism through which this filler aids the ablative properties of materials is explained with the help of photomicrographs.

47. High Char Yielding Nitrosubstituted Epoxide Resins

Abstract

The thermal properties of a number of nitrosubstituted and analogous nonnitrosubstituted epoxide polymers were investigated. Threefold or more increases in char yield (up to 60%) were obtained on the nitrated analogs. Correspondingly lower maximum rates of weight loss were observed. In one case, this was lowered by 700%. These effects were enhanced when highly functional and highly aromatic epoxide resins were used. The sample size and heating rate employed had pronounced effects upon the amount of char formed during thermal degradation. Analysis of char residues indicates hetero-ring formation for the nitrosubstituted systems during pyrolysis. (Author)

48. THE EFFECT OF EPOXY RESIN AND CURING AGENT STRUCTURE ON ABLATIVE PROPERTIES.

Abstract

The reported is the second phase of a correlation of the chemical and physical properties of a polymer with its ablative properties (See AD-467 049 for phase I). Epoxide resins and curing agents were employed as model systems. Thermogravimetric analysis, cross-link density studies, infrared spectroscopy and 'alpha-rod' testing in the oxyacetylene burner facility were employed in the evaluation of the various systems. Amine cured epoxide structures produced high char rates (7.1 to 21.0 mils/sec) and low times to 200C (33 to 47 sec). Certain anhydride cured epoxides, namely methyl bicyclo (2.2.1) heptene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride (NMA) and 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTCD) were found to give good performance with low char rates (2.2 to 5.0 mils/sec) and high times to 200C (91 to 101 sec). Epoxides with a polyphenyl backbone gave the best overall performance, although resorcinol diglycidyl ether performed well also. Resin purity was found to be fairly critical in regard to ablative performance. (Author)

Abstract

The unusual two-step thermal degradation mechanism of epoxy resins cured with methyl bicyclo(2.2.1)heptene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride (NMA) was of NMA on the final epoxy system's chemical composition, crosslink density, thermal and ablative performance, and mechanism of degradation. Two mechanisms were elucidated for the initiation of thermal degradation of NMA cured epoxy resins. One, an acid-initiated mechanism which results in a splitting out of NMA from the resin structure, is operative up to 350 C. The other, a reverse Diels-Alder mechanism, is operative from 350 C and higher, especially under ablative conditions. (Author)
