Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in long-lived human populations have led to identification of variants associated with Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular disease, the latter being the most common cause of mortality in people worldwide. In contrast, naturally occurring cancer represents the leading cause of death in pet dogs, and specific breeds like the Golden Retriever (GR) carry up to a 65% cancer-related death rate. We hypothesized that GWAS of long-lived GRs might lead to the identification of genetic variants capable of modifying longevity within this cancer-predisposed breed. A GWAS was performed comparing GR dogs ≥ 14 years to dogs dying prior to age 12 which revealed a significant association to ERBB4, the only member of the epidermal growth factor receptor family capable of serving as both a tumor suppressor gene and an oncogene. No coding variants were identified, however, distinct haplotypes in the 5'UTR were associated with reduced lifespan in two separate populations of GR dogs. When all GR dogs were analyzed together (n = 304), the presence of haplotype 3 was associated with shorter survival (11.8 years vs. 12.8 years, p = 0.024). GRs homozygous for haplotype 3 had the shortest survival, and GRs homozygous for haplotype 1 had the longest survival (11.6 years vs. 13.5 years, p = 0.0008). Sub-analyses revealed that the difference in lifespan for GRs carrying at least 1 copy of haplotype 3 was specific to female dogs (p = 0.009), whereas survival remained significantly different in both male and female GRs homozygous for haplotype 1 or haplotype 3 (p = 0.026 and p = 0.009, respectively). Taken together, these findings implicate a potential role for ERBB4 in GR longevity and provide evidence that within-breed canine lifespan studies could serve as a mechanism to identify favorable or disease-modifying variants important to the axis of aging and cancer.

Sarcomas present challenges in management due to their aggressive nature. Interventional radiology, utilizing ablation and embolization, offer promising alternatives for recurrent cases. In recent years, combined techniques (ablation + embolization) and the use of balloon-microcatheter have been introduced to enhance the necrotic effect in HCC treatment. This paper presents the case of a 47-year-old female with recurrent abdominal sarcoma treated with balloon-occluded microwave ablation (b-MWA) and balloon-occluded transarterial embolization (b-TAE). Post-treatment imaging revealed a significant reduction in lesion size and absence of pathological contrast enhancement. This study highlights the potential of balloon-catheter-assisted combined therapies (b-MWA + b-TAE) in managing sarcomas, expanding the applicability of interventional radiology for inoperable cases that are too large for ablative therapy alone or requiring multiple antennas. Further research is warranted to refine protocols and enhance patient outcomes in sarcoma management.

Case: Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) or Masson's tumor is a rare and apparently benign entity that has rarely been reported in the foot. Its exact etiology is not known but repetitive local trauma might play a role. We hereby present a case of IPEH in the foot, associated with tailor's bunion. Conclusion: This is, to our knowledge, the first report of IPEH associated with tailor's bunion. Further research on the relationship between mechanical injury and occurrence of IPEH in the foot is needed, particularly when bunions or bunionettes are present.

Background: We performed a cross-sectional survey in April-May 2018 among Rohingya in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, to assess polio immunity and inform vaccination strategies., Methods and Findings: Rohingya children aged 1-6 years (younger group) and 7-14 years (older group) were selected using multi-stage cluster sampling in makeshift settlements and simple random sampling in Nayapara registered camp. Surveyors asked parents/caregivers if the child received any oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) in Myanmar and, for younger children, if the child received vaccine in any of the 5 campaigns delivering bivalent OPV (serotypes 1 and 3) conducted during September 2017-April 2018 in Cox's Bazar. Dried blood spot (DBS) specimens were tested for neutralizing antibodies to poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 in 580 younger and 297 older children. Titers ≥ 1:8 were considered protective. Among 632 children (335 aged 1-6 years, 297 aged 7-14 years) enrolled in the study in makeshift settlements, 51% were male and 89% had arrived after August 9, 2017. Among 245 children (all aged 1-6 years) enrolled in the study in Nayapara, 54% were male and 10% had arrived after August 9, 2017. Among younger children, 74% in makeshift settlements and 92% in Nayapara received >3 bivalent OPV doses in campaigns. Type 1 seroprevalence was 85% (95% CI 80%-89%) among younger children and 91% (95% CI 86%-95%) among older children in makeshift settlements, and 92% (88%-95%) among younger children in Nayapara. Type 2 seroprevalence was lower among younger children than older children in makeshift settlements (74% [95% CI 68%-79%] versus 97% [95% CI 94%-99%], p < 0.001), and was 69% (95% CI 63%-74%) among younger children in Nayapara. Type 3 seroprevalence was below 75% for both age groups and areas. The limitations of this study are unknown routine immunization history and poor retention of vaccination cards., Conclusions: Younger Rohingya children had immunity gaps to all 3 polio serotypes and should be targeted by future campaigns and catch-up routine immunization. Previous investigators have suggested that urinary tract infections with urea-splitting organisms may be a primary etiologic factor in the acidosis which is seen after urinary diversion. This study employs a model in which small intestinal segments are perfused with an artificial urine solution over a three hour period. Urease is then added in order to determine its effect on acid-base balance and net intestinal electrolyte transport. Urease created no significant increase in acid load (delta HCO3- = -7.5 +/- 2.2 for controls vs. -8.7 +/- 2.9 for urease group), but did increase the osmolality of the intestinal contents and resulted in a 24% increase in free water loss (p = .037). Analysis of sodium and chloride movement following the addition of urease to the perfusate suggests that both ammonium and bicarbonate are absorbed by the intestinal segment. Thus any acidosis resulting from increased ammonium absorption following the addition of urease appears to be offset by concomitant bicarbonate absorption. The azotemia of urinary diversion appears to be primarily the result of urea absorption, partially the result of ammonium absorption, and is not significantly increased by urease.
