Abstract

The expansion of variable generation has driven a transition toward a 100\% non-fossil power system. New system needs are challenging system stability and suggesting the need for a redesign of the ancillary service (AS) markets. This paper presents a comprehensive and broad review for industrial practitioners and academic researchers regarding the challenges and potential solutions to accommodate high shares of variable renewable energy (VRE) generation levels. We detail the main drivers enabling the energy transition and facilitating the provision of ASs. A systematic review of the United States and European AS markets is conducted. We clearly organize the main ASs in a standard taxonomy, identifying current practices and initiatives to support the increasing VRE share. Furthermore, we envision the future of modern AS markets, proposing potential solutions for some remaining fundamental technical and market design challenges., Comment: 64 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The smart transformer (ST) implemented using power electronics converters, has the capability of independent voltage control and reactive power isolation between its primary and secondary terminals. This capability provides a flexibility in the power system to support the voltage at the primary side and control the demand at the secondary side. Using this flexibility, the system power flow could, for example, be optimized for lower costs. This paper proposes an ST model suitable for OPF analysis. The effects of using multiple STs at different penetration levels, on the daily generation costs in an IEEE 39 bus test system are presented.

Abstract

The use of wind power has grown strongly in recent years and is expected to continue to increase in the coming decades. Solar power is also expected to increase significantly. In a power system, a continuous balance is maintained between total production and demand. This balancing is currently mainly managed with conventional power plants, but with larger amounts of wind and solar power, other sources will also be needed. Interesting possibilities include continuous control of wind and solar power, battery storage, electric vehicles, hydrogen production, and other demand resources with flexibility potential. The aim of this article is to describe and compare the different challenges and future possibilities in six systems concerning how to keep a continuous balance in the future with significantly larger amounts of variable renewable power production. A realistic understanding of how these systems plan to handle continuous balancing is central to effectively develop a carbon-dioxide-free electricity system of the future. The systems included in the overview are the Nordic synchronous area, the island of Ireland, the Iberian Peninsula, Texas (ERCOT), the central European system, and Great Britain.

Abstract

The wind generation share in many European bidding zones is now large enough to affect the market value of wind power, and wind energy is getting less-than-average market price in day-ahead markets. As alternatives to investing in dedicated energy storage, there are two main ways to mitigate the decreasing market value trend. The first is employing different diversification measures (geographical spread, alternative wind turbine technologies, integration with solar). The second is implementing demand flexibility measures. Abstract

Greater numbers of power electronics (PEs) converters are being connected to energy systems due to the development of renewable energy sources, high-voltage transmission, and PE-interfaced loads. Given that power electronics-based devices and synchronous machines have very different dynamic behaviours, some modelling approximations, which may commonly be applied to run transient simulations of transmission systems, may not be optimal for future grids. Indeed, the systematic utilisation of the phasor approximation for power lines, implemented in most transient simulation programs, is increasingly not appropriate anymore. In order to avoid the requirement for full electromagnetic transient simulations, which can be resource-demanding and time-consuming, this paper proposes a combination of an event-based state residualisation approximation and the Kron reduction technique. The proposed technique has the advantage of allowing accurate transient simulations based on the optimal reduction of the number of state variables, depending on the observed variables, the considered events, and the tolerated approximation error, along with simplifying power systems equations for accelerated simulations.
