Aims: Following our comprehensive studies of the WR stars in the Milky Way, we now present spectroscopic analyses of almost all known WN stars in the LMC. Methods: For the quantitative analysis of the wind-dominated emission-line spectra, we employ the Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) model atmosphere code. By fitting synthetic spectra to the observed spectral energy distribution and the available spectra (ultraviolet and optical), we obtain the physical properties of 107 stars. Results: We present the fundamental stellar and wind parameters for an almost complete sample of WN stars in the LMC. Among those stars that are putatively single, two different groups can be clearly distinguished. While 12% of our sample are more luminous than 10^6 Lsun and contain a significant amount of hydrogen, 88% of the WN stars, with little or no hydrogen, populate the luminosity range between log (L/Lsun) = 5.3...5.8. Conclusions: While the few extremely luminous stars (log (L/Lsun) > 6), if indeed single stars, descended directly from the main sequence at very high initial masses, the bulk of WN stars have gone through the red-supergiant phase. According to their luminosities in the range of log (L/Lsun) = 5.3...5.8, these stars originate from initial masses between 20 and 40 Msun. This mass range is similar to the one found in the Galaxy, i.e. the expected metallicity dependence of the evolution is not seen. Current stellar evolution tracks, even when accounting for rotationally induced mixing, still partly fail to reproduce the observed ranges of luminosities and initial masses. Aims. What is the origin of the large-amplitude variability in Wolf-Rayet WN8 stars in general and WR123 in particular? A dedicated spectroscopic campaign targets the ten-hour period previously found in the high-precision photometric data obtained by the MOST satellite. Methods. In June-August 2003 we obtained a series of high signal-to-noise, mid-resolution spectra from several sites in the {\lambda}{\lambda} 4000 - 6940 A^{\circ} domain. We also followed the star with occasional broadband (Johnson V) photometry. The acquired spectroscopy allowed a detailed study of spectral variability on timescales from \sim 5 minutes to months. Results. We find that all observed spectral lines of a given chemical element tend to show similar variations and that there is a good correlation between the lines of different elements, without any significant time delays, save the strong absorption components of the Hei lines, which tend to vary differently from the emission parts. We find a single sustained periodicity, P \sim 9.8 h, which is likely related to the relatively stable pulsations found in MOST photometry obtained one year later. In the course of an imaging survey we have detected a visual companion to the intermediate-mass star HR 6037. In this letter, we present two epoch observations of the binary with NACO/VLT, and near-IR spectroscopy of the secondary with ISAAC/VLT. The NACO observations allow us to confirm HR 6037B as a co-moving companion. Its J and H band ISAAC spectra suggest the object has an spectral type of M9+-1, with a surface gravity intermediate between that of 10 Myr dwarfs and field dwarfs with identical spectral type. The comparison of its Ks-band photometry with evolutionary tracks allows us to derive a mass, effective temperature, and surface gravity of 62+-20 MJup, Teff = 2330+-200 K, and log g = 5.1+-0.2, respectively. The small mass ratio of the binary, -0.03, and its long orbital period, -5000 yr, makes HR 6037 a rare and uncommon binary system., Comment: (5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters)

The interpretation of the X-ray spectra of X-ray binaries during their hard states requires a hot, optically thin medium. There are several accretion disc models in the literature that account for this aspect. However, none is designed to simultaneously explain the presence of powerful jets detected during these states. A new quasi-keplerian hot accretion disc solution, a Jet Emitting disc (JED hereafter), which is part of a global disc-jet MHD structure producing stationary super-alfv\'enic ejection, is investigated here. Its radiative and energetic properties are then compared to the observational constraints found in Cygnus X-1. We solve the disc energy equation by balancing the local heating term with advection and cooling by synchrotron, bremsstrahlung and Comptonization processes. The heating term, disc density, accretion velocity and magnetic field amplitude were taken from published self-similar models of accretion-ejection structures. Both optically thin and thick regimes are considered in a one temperature gas supported disc. Three branches of solutions are found possible at a given radius but we investigate only the hot, optically thin and geometrically slim solutions. These solutions give simultaneously, and in a consistent way, the radiative and energetics properties of the disc-jet system. They are able to very well reproduce the accretion-ejection properties of Cygnus X-1, namely its X-ray spectral emission, jet power and jet velocity. About half of the released accretion power is used to produce two mildly relativistic (v/c~0.5) jets and for a luminosity of the order of 1\% of the Eddington luminosity, the JED temperature and optical depth are close to that observed in the hard state Cygnus X-1. The JEDs properties are in agreement with the observations of the prototypical black hole binary Cygnus X-1. and are likely to be relevant to the whole class of microquasars., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. Most observational techniques in astronomy can be understood as exploiting the various forms of the first-order correlation function g^(1). As however demonstrated by the Narrabri Stellar Intensity Interferometer back in the 1960's by Hanbury Brown & Twiss, and which is the first experiment to measure the second-order correlation function g^(2), light can carry more information than simply its intensity, spectrum and polarization. Since this experiment, theoretical and laboratory studies of non-classical properties of light have become a very active field of research, namely quantum optics. Despite the variety of results in this field, astrophysics remained focused essentially on first-order coherence. In this paper, we study the possibility that quantum properties of light could be observed in cosmic sources. We provide the basic mathematical ingredients about the first and the second order correlation functions, applied to the modern context of astronomical observations. The exploitation of g^(2) is certainly richer than what a modern intensity interferometer could bring and is particularly interesting for sources of non-thermal light. We conclude by briefly presenting why microquasars in our galaxy and their extragalactic parents can represent an excellent first target in the optical/near-infrared where to observe non-thermal light, and test the use of g^(2) in astrophysical sources., Comment: 10 pages, accepted for publication in A&A. We examine the distance of the two galactic microquasars GRO J1655-40 and A0620-00, which are potentially the two closest black holes to the Sun. We aim to provide a picture as wide and complete as possible of the problem of measuring the distance of microquasars in our Galaxy. The purpose of this work is to fairly and critically review in great detail every distance method used for these two microquasars in order to show that the distances of probably all microquasars in our galaxy are much more uncertain than currently admitted. Moreover, we show that many confirmations of quantitative results are often entangled and rely on very uncertain measurements. We also present a new determination of the maximum distance of GRO J1655-40 using red clump giant stars, and show that it confirms our earlier result of a distance less than 2 kpc instead of 3.2 kpc. Since it then becomes more likely that GRO J1655-40 could originate from the stellar cluster NGC 6242, located at 1.0 kpc, we review the distance estimations of A0620-00, which is so far the closest black hole with an average distance of about 1.0 kpc. We show that the distance methods used for A0620-00 are also problematic. Finally, we present a new analysis of spectroscopic and astrometric archival data on this microquasar, and apply the maximum-distance method of Foellmi et al. (2006). We derive the physical properties of three WNh stars in the SMC to constrain stellar evolution beyond the main sequence at low metallicity and to investigate the metallicity dependence of the clumping properties of massive stars. We compute atmosphere models to derive the stellar and wind properties of the three WNh targets. A FUV/UV/optical/near-infrared analysis gives access to temperatures, luminosities, mass loss rates, terminal velocities and stellar abundances. All stars still have a large hydrogen mass fraction in their atmosphere, and show clear signs of CNO processing in their surface abundances. One of the targets can be accounted for by normal stellar evolution. It is a star with initial mass around 40-50 Msun in, or close to, the core He burning phase. The other two objects must follow a peculiar evolution, governed by fast rotation. In particular, one object is likely evolving homogeneously due to its position blue-ward of the main sequence and its high H mass fraction. The clumping factor of one star is found to be 0.15+/-0.05. This is comparable to values found for Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars, indicating that within the uncertainties, the clumping factor does not seem to depend on metallicity., Comment: 16 pages. Based on a dynamical model describing how stationary, powerful and self-collimated jets are being launched from a magnetized disk, we build a consistent disk+jet microquasar picture. Our disk is a new type of disk solution called the Jet Emitting Disk (JED), and whose characteristics are directly constrained by the presence of a jet. We assume a one-temperature plasma with thermal particles only. By solving the radiative equilibrium of the disk, we obtain three branches of solutions, a hot and a cold ones (both thermally stable), and an intermediate one, thermally unstable. The hot solution possess the global observed characteristics of what has been often called a "corona" located above the inner disk region. We present this new disk solution, and how the radiative equilibrium is computed. We discuss the richness of the solution, and show the ability of the model to reproduce an observed spectral energy distribution of XTE J1118+480 with reasonable parameters. We present preliminary results and observables from a model of microquasar based on a theoretical framework where stationary, powerful, compact jets are launched and then accelerated from an inner magnetized disk. This model aim at providing a consistent picture of microquasars in all their spectral states. It is composed of an outer standard accretion disk down to a variable transition radius where it changes to a magnetized disk, called the Jet Emitting Disk (JED). The theoretical framework providing the heating, we solve the radiative equilibrium and obtain the JED structure. Our JED solutions are rich, and reproduce the already known scheme where a cold optically-thick and a hot optically-thin solutions bracket a thermally unstable one. We present the results of optical wavelength observations of the unusual SMC eclipsing binary system HD 5980 obtained in 1999 and 2004--2005. Radial velocity curves for the erupting LBV/WR object (star A) and its close WR-like companion (star B) are obtained by deblending the variable emission-line profiles of N IV and N V lines under the simplistic assumption that these lines originate primarily in the winds of star A and star B. The derived masses M_A=58--79 Mo and M_B=51--67 Mo, are more consistent with the stars' location near the top of the HRD than previous estimates. The presence of a wind-wind interaction region is inferred from the orbital phase-dependent behavior of He I P Cygni absorption components. The emission-line intensities continued with the declining trend previously seen in UV spectra. The behavior of the photospheric absorption lines is consistent with the results of Schweickhardt (2002) who concludes that the third object in the combined spectrum, star C, is also a binary system with P(starC)~96.5 days, e=0.83. The Variable Star One-shot Project (VSOP) is aimed at (1) providing the variability type and spectral type of all unstudied variable stars, (2) process, publish, and make the data available as automatically as possible, and (3) generate serendipitous discoveries. This first paper describes the project itself, the acquisition of the data, the dataflow, the spectroscopic analysis and the on-line availability of the fully calibrated and reduced data. We also present the results on the 221 stars observed during the first semester of the project. We used the high-resolution echelle spectrographs HARPS and FEROS in the ESO La Silla Observatory (Chile) to survey known variable stars. Once reduced by the dedicated pipelines, the radial velocities are determined from cross correlation with synthetic template spectra, and the spectral types are determined by an automatic minimum distance matching to synthetic spectra, with traditional manual spectral typing cross-checks. The variability types are determined by manually evaluating the available light curves and the spectroscopy. In the future, a new automatic classifier, currently being developed by members of the VSOP team, based on these spectroscopic data and on the photometric classifier developed for the COROT and Gaia space missions, will be used. We confirm or revise spectral types of 221 variable stars from the GCVS. We identify 26 previously unknown multiple systems, among them several visual binaries with spectroscopic binary individual components. We present new individual results for the multiple systems V349 Vel and BC Gru, for the composite spectrum star V4385 Sgr, for the T-Tauri star V1045 Sco, and for DM Boo which we re-classify as a BY Draconis variable. The Variable Star One-shot Project (VSOP) aimed at providing to the world-wide stellar community the necessary one-shot spectrum of unstudied variable stars, too often classified as such by an analysis of photometric data only. The VSOP has established an new kind of observational model, where all steps from observations to spectral analysis, are automatized (or are underway to be fully automatized). The project is centralized on a collaborative wiki website. The VSOP operational model is very successful, data is continously flowing and being analyszed, and VSOP is now a worldwide open collaboration of people with very different and complementary skills and expertise. The idea of a central wiki website has been extended by one of us to propose a new service to the whole astronomical community, called Wikimbad. Wikimbad is an open wiki website aimed at collecting, organizing and making publicly available all kind of reduced and published astronomical data. Its strengths and a comparison with the Virtual Observatory are discussed. Context: The detection of overabundances of $\alpha$-elements and lithium in the secondary star of a black-hole binary provides important insights about the formation of a stellar-mass black-hole. $\alpha$-enhancement might theoretically also be the result of pollution by the nucleosynthesis occurring during an outburst, or through spallation by the jet. Aims: We study the abundances, and their possible variations with time, in the secondary star of the runaway black-hole binary GRO J1655--40, in order to understand their origin. Methods: We present a detailed comparison between a Keck spectrum obtained in 1998 found in the literature, archival VLT-UVES data taken in 2004 and new VLT-UVES spectra obtained early 2006. We carefully determine the equivalent widths of different $\alpha$-elements (Mg, O, Ti, S and Si) with their associated uncertainty. We use the well-studied comparison star HD 156098 as well as synthetic spectra to match the spectrum of GRO J1655--40 in order to determine the abundances of these elements. Results: We see no significant variations of equivalent widths with time. Our fit using HD 156098 reveals that there is significant overabundance of oxygen in all our spectra, but no overabundances of any of the other $\alpha$-elements. Finally, we do not detect the lithium line at 6707 \AA. Conclusions: We show that there is no detected pollution in GRO J1655--40 after the burst in 2005. Moreover, we argue that uncertainties in the equivalent widths were previously underestimated by a factor of $\sim$3. Consequently, our results challenge the existence of general overabundances of $\alpha$-elements observed in this galactic black-hole binary, and thus the accepted interpretation that they are of supernova origin. The mass-loss rates of hot, massive, luminous stars are considered a decisive parameter in shaping the evolutionary tracks of such stars and influencing the interstellar medium on galactic scales. The small-scale structures (clumps) omnipresent in such winds may reduce empirical estimates of mass-loss rates by an evolutionarily significant factor of >=3. So far, there has been no direct observational evidence that wind-clumping may persist at the same level in environments with a low ambient metallicity, where the wind-driving opacity is reduced. Here we report the results of time-resolved spectroscopy of three presumably single Population I Wolf-Rayet stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud, where the ambient metallicity is ~1/5 Z_Sun.We detect numerous small-scale emission peaks moving outwards in the accelerating parts of the stellar winds.The general properties of the moving features, such as their velocity dispersions,emissivities and average accelerations, closely match the corresponding characteristics of small-scale inhomogeneities in the winds of Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures; accepted by ApJ Letters

Aims. The properties of the early-type stars in the core of the Westerlund2 cluster are examined in order to establish a link between the cluster and the very massive Wolf-Rayet binary WR20a as well as the HII complex RCW49. Methods. Photometric monitoring as well as spectroscopic observations of Westerlund2 are used to search for light variability and to establish the spectral types of the early-type stars in the cluster core. Results. The first light curves of the eclipsing binary WR20a in B and V filters are analysed and a distance of 8kpc is inferred. Three additional eclipsing binaries, which are probable late O or early B-type cluster members, are discovered, but none of the known early O-type stars in the cluster displays significant photometric variability above 1% at the 1-sigma level. The twelve brightest O-type stars are found to have spectral types between O3 and O6.5, significantly earlier than previously thought. Conclusions. The distance of the early-type stars in Westerlund2 is established to be in excellent agreement with the distance of WR20a, indicating that WR20a actually belongs to the cluster. Our best estimate of the cluster distance thus amounts to 8.0pm1.4kpc. Despite the earlier spectral types, the currently known population of early-type stars in Westerlund2 does not provide enough ionizing photons to account for the radio emission of the RCW49 complex. We review some specific and quantitative issues in popular methods used to determine the distance of galactic objects, in the context of the microquasars GRO J1655-40 and 1A 0620-00. In particular, we discuss the domain of validity of the relationship between the Sodium lines and the color excess, and the supposedly systematic overestimation of optical absorption from X-ray data. Both problems imply a possible underestimation of the absorption toward GRO J1655-40. We also discuss the main issue concerning the absolute magnitude of the secondary star in our own maximum-distance method, that has been used on GRO J1655-40. We show in this respect that the dynamical parameters of this microquasar are not definitive, and that the mean properties of the secondary star is not so much different from that of a normal single star of same spectral type. Following the possibility that GRO J1655-40 is located at about 1.0 kpc, associated with the open cluster NGC 6242, we rise the question: which black-hole is the closest to the Sun? In that context, we quickly discuss the situation of the microquasar 1A 0620-00, by addressing the specific point of its 30-years-old extinction value. Finally, we present some details about a possible new distance method, using the surface properties of the stars, based on the cross-correlation function bisector, and that is now accessible thanks to the advent of a high-resolution echelle spectrograph called CRIRES at the VLT. GRO J1655--40 is a galactic microquasar, i.e. a short-period binary with relativistic radio-jets and where the companion is a black-hole. A little after its discovery in 1994 by $BATSE$, a distance of 3.2$\pm$0.2 kpc has been estimated, and at which the radio jets appeared superluminal. Since that time, this distance of GRO J1655--40 has been discussed in many studies, often strengthening the value of 3.2 kpc, and used in numerous models. However, recently, \citet{Foellmi-etal-2006b-astroph} used new VLT-UVES and {\it published} photometric data to show that GRO J1655--40 must be closer than 1.7 kpc and that the accuracy of the main distance estimators for this source can be questioned. Still, the details on how really the distance of 3.2 kpc has been build was not fully clear. It is the purpose of this article to show that while the {\it upper} limit to the distance is rather firm, the lower limit is not. We analyse the detectability of vegetation on a global scale on Earth's surface. Considering its specific reflectance spectrum showing a sharp edge around 700 nm, vegetation can be considered as a potential global biomarker. This work, based on observational data, aims to characterise and to quantify this signature in the disk-averaged Earth's spectrum. Earthshine spectra have been used to test the detectability of the "Vegetation Red Edge" (VRE) in the Earth spectrum. We obtained reflectance spectra from near UV (320 nm) to near IR (1020 nm) for different Earth phases (continents or oceans seen from the Moon) with EMMI on the NTT at ESO/La Silla, Chile. We accurately correct the sky background and take into account the phase-dependent colour of the Moon. VRE measurements require a correction of the ozone Chappuis absorption band and Rayleigh plus aerosol scattering. Results : The near-UV spectrum shows a dark Earth below 350 nm due to the ozone absorption. The Vegetation Red Edge is observed when forests are present (4.0% for Africa and Europe), and is lower when clouds and oceans are mainly visible (1.3% for the Pacific Ocean). Errors are typically $\pm0.5$, and $\pm1.5$ in the worst case. We discuss the different sources of errors and bias and suggest possible improvements. We showed that measuring the VRE or an analog on an Earth-like planet remains very difficult (photometric relative accuracy of 1% or better). It remains a small feature compared to atmospheric absorption lines. Most population I Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are the He-rich descendants of the most massive stars (M_i = 25 - 100 M_sun). Evidence has been accumulating over the years that among all pop I WR stars, those of the relatively cool, N-rich subtype "WN8" are among the most peculiar: 1. They tend to be runaways, with large space velocity and/or avoid clusters. 2. Unlike their equally luminous WN6,7 cousins, only a very small number of WN8 stars are known to belong to a close binary with an OB companion. 3. They are the systematically most highly stochastically variable among all (single) WR stars. Taken together, these suggest that many WN8 stars may originally have been in close binaries (like half of all stars), in which the original primary exploded as a supernova, leaving behind a very close binary containing a massive star with a neutron star/black hole companion (like Cyg X-3). When the massive remaining star evolved in turn, it engulfed and eventually swallowed the compact companion, leading to the presently puffed-up, variable WN8 star. We challenge the accepted distance of 3.2 kpc of GRO J1655-40. We present VLT-UVES spectroscopic observations to estimate the absorption toward the source, and determine a maximum distance of GRO J1655-40. We show that the accepted value of 3.2 kpc is taken for granted by many authors. We retrieved in the ESO archive UVES spectra taken in April 2004 when GRO J1655-40 was in quiescence to determine the spectral type of the secondary star. For the first time we build a flux-calibrated mean (UVES) spectrum of GRO J1655-40 and compare its observed flux to that of five nearby stars of similar spectral types. We strengthen our results with the traditional pair method, using published photometric data of the comparison stars. We show that the distance of 3.2 kpc is questionable. We determine a spectral type F6IV for the secondary star. We demonstrate in details that the distance of GRO J1655-40 must be smaller than 1.7 kpc. The runaway black hole GRO J1655-40 could be associated with the open cluster NGC 6242 which is located at 1.0$\pm$0.1 kpc from the Sun. At $D \leq$ 1.7 kpc the jets are not a superluminal, and GRO J1655-40 becomes one of the closest known black holes to the Sun., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. The multiplicity of early-type stars is still not well established. The studies of individual star forming regions suggest a connection with the age and the environment. To fill in this gap, we started the first detailed adaptive-optic-assisted imaging survey of 308 BA-type field stars within 300 pc from the Sun, to derive their multiplicity in a homogeneous way. Our first epoch observations yield 195 companion candidates around 117 sample targets. Aims. The aim of this work is to identify and study spectral features in the quasar 3C 273 usually blended by its strong jet emission. Method. A historic minimum in the sub-millimetre emission of 3C 273 triggered coordinated multi-wavelength observations in June 2004. X-ray observations from the INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton and RXTE satellites are complemented by ground-based optical, infrared, millimetre and radio observations. The overall spectrum is used to model the infrared and X-ray spectral components. Results. Three thermal dust emission components are identified in the infrared. The dust emission on scales from 1 pc to several kpc is comparable to that of other quasars, as expected by AGN unification schemes. The observed weakness of the X-ray emission supports the hypothesis of a synchrotron self-Compton origin for the jet component. There is a clear soft-excess and we find evidence for a very broad iron line which could be emitted in a disk around a Kerr black hole. We report 320 to 1020nm disk-averaged Earth reflectance spectra obtained from Moon's Earthshine observations with the EMMI spectrograph on the NTT at ESO La Silla (Chile). The spectral signatures of Earth atmosphere and ground vegetation are observed. A vegetation red-edge of up to 9% is observed on Europe and Africa and ~2% upon Pacific Ocean. The spectra also show that Earth is a blue planet when Rayleigh scattering dominates, or totally white when the cloud cover is large., Comment: Proceeding of an oral prensentation at the UAI No200 Colloquium

Significant amounts of hydrogen were found in very hot early-type single WN stars in the SMC and the LMC. Recently, we found similar evidence in the Wolf-Rayet star of a short-period LMC binary. BAT99-129 in the LMC is one among a handful of extra-galactic eclipsing Wolf-Rayet binaries known. We present blue, medium-resolution, phase-dependent NTT-EMMI spectra of this system that allow us to separate the spectra of the two components of the binary and to obtain a reliable orbital solution for both stars. We assign an O5V spectral type to the companion, and WN3(h)a to the Wolf-Rayet component. We discuss the spectroscopic characteristics of the system: luminosity ratio, radii, rotation velocities. We find a possible oversynchronous rotation velocity for the O star. Surprisingly, the extracted Wolf-Rayet spectrum clearly shows the presence of blueshifted absorption lines, similar to what has been found in all single hot WN stars in the SMC and some in the LMC. We also discuss the presence of such intrinsic lines in the context of hydrogen in SMC and LMC Wolf-Rayet stars, WR+O binary evolution and GRB progenitors. We discuss a series of Earthshine spectra obtained with the NTT/EMMI instrument between 320nm and 1020nm with a resolution of R~450 in the blue and R~250 in the red. These ascending and descending Moon's Earthshine spectra taken from Chile give disk-averaged spectra for two different Earth's phases. The spectra show the ozone (Huggins and Chappuis bands), oxygen and water vapour absorption bands, and also the stronger Rayleigh scattering in the blue. BAT99-129 is a rare, short-period eclipsing Wolf-Rayet binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We present here medium-resolution NTT/EMMI spectra that allow us to disentangle the spectra of the two components and find the orbital parameters of the binary. We also present VLT/FORS1 spectra of this binary taken during the secondary eclipse, i.e. when the companion star passes in front of the Wolf-Rayet star. The multiplicity of early-type stars is still not well established. The derived binary fraction is different for individual star forming regions, suggesting a connection with the age and the environment conditions. The few studies that have investigated this connection do not provide conclusive results. To fill in this gap, we started the first detailed adaptive-optic-assisted imaging survey of early-type field stars to derive their multiplicity in a homogeneous way. The sample has been extracted from the Hipparcos Catalog and consists of 341 BA-type stars within ~300 pc from the Sun. A 12th Wolf-Rayet star in the SMC has recently been discovered by Massey et al. (2003). In order to determine its spectral type and a preliminary binary status, we obtained 3 high signal-to-noise spectra separated in time at the ESO-NTT. Compared to other WR stars in the SMC, SMC-WR12 appears to belong to the subgroup of faint, single and hydrogen-rich WN stars. We discuss the evolutionary status of WR12 and show that relatively low mass rotating progenitors can better account for the properties of single hydrogen-rich WN stars in the SMC., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted by A&A, include latest corrections
