Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. 2. Neutrinos from interactions between the relativistic jet and large-scale structures of BL Lac objects investigated through their gamma-ray spectrum

Abstract

Absorption and emission lines in the optical spectrum are typically used to investigate the presence of large-scale environments in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). BL Lac objects - which are a category of AGNs with the relativistic jet pointing directly to the observer - are supposed to represent a late evolution stage of AGNs. Their large-scale structures are probably poorer of material, which is distributed with lower densities throughout the circumnuclear environment. Their accretion disk is weak and weakly reprocessed, making the non-thermal continuum of the relativistic jet dominate their optical spectrum and preventing us from identifying the thermal emission of the photon fields produced by such large-scale structures. However, these photon fields may still exist and eventually interact with the gamma rays traveling in the blazar jet via gamma-gamma pair production, producing observable effects such as absorption features in their spectral energy distribution. Interestingly, the same photon field might also lead to the production of high-energy neutrinos, acting as targets for proton-photon interactions. In this contribution, we present the results of a set of simulations over a wide parameter space describing both the blazar jet and the photon field properties. We discuss the most effective conditions that may produce fluxes of neutrinos compatible with the sensitivities of the current and the next generation of neutrino detectors. 3. AGILE Observations of GRB 220101A: A 'New Year's Burst' with an Exceptionally Huge Energy Release

Abstract

We report the AGILE observations of GRB 220101A, which took place at the beginning of 1st January 2022 and was recognized as one of the most energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected since their discovery. The AGILE satellite acquired interesting data concerning the prompt phase of this burst, providing an overall temporal and spectral description of the event in a wide energy range, from tens of keV to tens of MeV. Dividing the prompt emission into three main intervals, we notice an interesting spectral evolution, featuring a notable hardening of the spectrum in the central part of the burst. The average fluxes encountered in the different time intervals are relatively moderate, with respect to those of other remarkable bursts, and the overall fluence exhibits a quite ordinary value among the GRBs detected by MCAL. However, GRB 220101A is the second farthest event detected by AGILE, and the burst with the highest isotropic equivalent energy of the whole MCAL GRB sample, releasing E_iso=2.54x10^54 erg and exhibiting an isotropic luminosity of L_iso=2.34x10^52 erg/s (both in the 400 keV - 10 MeV energy range). We also analyzed the first 10^6 s of the afterglow phase, using the publicly available Swift XRT data, carrying out a theoretical analysis of the afterglow, based on the forward shock model. We notice that GRB 220101A is with high probability surrounded with a wind-like density medium, and that the energy carried by the initial shock shall be a fraction of the total E_iso, presumably near 50%., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy aims at reconstructing the energy and direction of gamma rays from the extensive air showers they initiate in the atmosphere. Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) collect the Cherenkov light induced by secondary charged particles in extensive air showers (EAS), creating an image of the shower in a camera positioned in the focal plane of optical systems. This image is used to evaluate the type, energy and arrival direction of the primary particle that initiated the shower. This contribution shows the results of a novel reconstruction method based on likelihood maximization. The novelty with respect to previous likelihood reconstruction methods lies in the definition of a likelihood per single camera pixel, accounting not only for the total measured charge, but also for its development over time. This leads to more precise reconstruction of shower images. Abstract

The recent detection of a very high energy (VHE) emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) above 100 GeV performed by the MAGIC and H.E.S.S. collaborations, has represented a significant, long-awaited result for the VHE astrophysics community. Although these results' scientific impact has not yet been fully exploited, the possibility to detect VHE gamma-ray signals from GRBs has always been considered crucial for clarifying the poorly known physics of these objects. Furthermore, the discovery of high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves associated with astrophysical sources have definitively opened the era of multi-messenger astrophysics, providing unique insights into the physics of extreme cosmic accelerators. In the near future, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will play a major role in these observations. Within this framework, the Large Size Telescopes (LSTs) will be the instruments best suited to significantly impact on short time-scale transients follow-up thanks to their fast slewing and large effective area. The observations of the early emission phase of a wide range of transient events with good sensitivity below 100 GeV will allow us to open new opportunities for time-domain astrophysics in an energy range not affected by selective absorption processes typical of other wavelengths. Abstract

The gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056, was discovered in VHE gamma-rays by the MAGIC telescopes in 2017 in a follow-up campaign of a high energy neutrino event IceCube-170922A (IC+Fermi+MAGIC++, Science 361, eaat1378 (2018)). Subsequent multivawelenght (MWL) observations and theoretical modeling in a frame of hadro-leptonic emission confirmed that this source could be a potential cosmic ray and neutrino emitter (MAGIC Collaboration, Ansoldi et al., (2018)). This is, by far, the most significant association between a high-energy neutrino and an astrophysical source emitting gamma rays and X-rays. TXS 0506+056 is a key object to help the astrophysics community to establish connections between high-energy neutrinos and astrophysical sources. Accurate and contemporaneous MWL spectral measurements are essential ingredients to achieve this goal. In the conference, we present the measurements from the MAGIC and MWL monitoring of this source, spanning the time period from November 2017 till February 2019. Abstract

Several classes of sources are known to emit different messengers. Among them, transient sources are a special case, due to their serendipitous occurrence, time variability and duration on different timescales. They are associated with explosive and catastrophic events where very compact objects like neutron stars and black holes are involved. The difficulty of observing such elusive and possibly short-lasting events requires a fast reaction and a well-organized alert network between different experiments. In order to characterize them in the best possible way, instruments with a wide field of view should serve as external triggers for facilities with small sky coverage. MAGIC, as a Cherenkov telescope, belongs to the latter category. The search for transients by MAGIC is possible thanks to an automatic alert system listening to the alerts sent by the Gamma-ray Coordinate Network (GCN). In this contribution we describe the MAGIC alert system, which was designed mainly for the follow-up of Gamma-Ray Bursts in its initial conception. The alert system was recently updated in a multi-messenger context, receiving alerts also from neutrino and GW observatories. Abstract

Extreme high-energy peaked BL Lac objects (EHBLs) are blazars whose synchrotron emission peaks at exceptionally high energies, above few keV, in the hard X-ray regime. So far, only a handful of those objects has been detected at very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma rays by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. Very remarkably, VHE observations of some of these blazars (like 1ES 0229+200) have provided evidence of a VHE gamma-ray emission extending to several TeV, which is difficult to explain with standard, one-zone synchrotron self-Compton models usually applied to BL Lac objects. The MAGIC collaboration coordinated a multi-year, multi-wavelength observational campaign on ten targets. The MAGIC telescopes detected VHE gamma rays from four EHBLs. In this paper we focus on the source 1ES 1426+426 and its X-ray and VHE gamma-ray properties. Abstract

The All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) is a probe class mission concept that will provide essential contributions to multimessenger astrophysics in the late 2020s and beyond. AMEGO combines high sensitivity in the 200 keV to 10 GeV energy range with a wide field of view, good spectral resolution, and polarization sensitivity. Therefore, AMEGO is key in the study of multimessenger astrophysical objects that have unique signatures in the gamma-ray regime, such as neutron star mergers, supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. Abstract

International audience; The future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will have telescopes of different sizes, the Large-Sized Telescopes (LSTs) being the largest ones. Located on the island of La Palma, the LST-1, the prototype of the first LST, started taking astronomical data in November 2019, detecting the first gamma-ray sources right afterwards. The analysis pipeline, that processes data from raw inputs until high level products is called lstchain and is heavily based in the CTA prototype pipeline framework ctapipe. In this presentation I'll show the pipeline that performs signal integration, image cleaning, image parameter calculation, and machine learning methods for true parameter reconstruction.

Abstract

This Thesis illustrates the activities and the results that I have obtained during my three-year PhD course at the University of Padova. My work was mainly based on the study of the extreme blazars, or better “extreme high-energy peaked BL Lac objects” (generally referred to as EHBLs). EHBLs are an emerging class of blazars with exceptional spectral properties, presenting a spectral energy distribution peaking with the synchrotron emission in hard X-rays and a high-energy emission in TeV gamma rays. The hard-TeV spectrum of EHBLs is important also for the implications on the indirect estimations of the extragalactic background light and of the intergalactic magnetic fields. The emission processes producing such extremely-high photon energies are currently not completely understood, and may represent a challenge for the standard modelling of these sources. In fact, the standard models are generally able to fit the experimental spectral data, but the parameters they assume are unusual compared to the standard blazar modelling currently available in literature. More complex models, assuming – for example – multiple emission zones or hadronic contributions, may provide more relaxed parameter spaces. In particular, the presence of hadronic processes in the blazar emission might make the EHBLs producers of extragalactic high-energy neutrinos.The number of EHBL objects is currently very limited. Thanks to recent observations, new sources have been classified as candidate EHBLs. Their spectral properties reveal new features that enrich the properties of this class of objects. In this framework, my research work started with the search for new EHBL candidates on the basis of all-sky surveys in hard X-rays. This new method allowed me to select the most promising extreme blazars relying on their X-ray to high-energy gamma-ray flux ratio. The analysis of the spectral properties of this new sample revealed interesting spectral features and systematic differences that are emerging in the EHBL class, especially in TeV gamma rays. This suggests the possible emergence of a sub-classification, and a new population of EHBLs may be unveiled. One specific aspect of my analysis was to predict the feasibility of observations of these objects with the current and next generation of Cherenkov telescopes. In the MAGIC Collaboration, I had the opportunity to propose a list of EHBL candidates for observations. Among them, a source named PGC 2402248 was observed and finally detected in TeV gamma rays, and several others are now being observed with the MAGIC telescopes. These results have been published together with a detailed discussion on the comparison between several theoretical models proposing different interpretations of the spectral properties of these sources. During my PhD, I had the opportunity to contribute to several other projects that complemented my preparation in this field. In the MAGIC Collaboration, I was involved in projects related to the detection of new EHBLs in TeV gamma rays and in the study of interesting blazars like PG 1553+113. I was also involved in two analyses on the relation between extreme blazars and extragalactic background light, and on the selection of extreme blazar candidates from a sample of faint sources in the high-energy gamma-ray band. Finally, an important part of my PhD activity within the MAGIC Collaboration was devoted to a contribution to the discovery of the first association between a high-energy neutrino, the so-called IceCube EHE-170922A event, and the blazar TXS 0506+056. During the analysis of this event, registered on September 2017, I was main analyser of the MAGIC data. Considering the importance of the discovery – with implications about the origin of the very-high-energy cosmic rays – and the intense multi-collaboration work, it was really a unique opportunity for me to gain new experience in this field and to further motivate my interest in the multi-messenger astrophysics.

Abstract

Blazars are a particular class of active galactic nuclei with their relativistic jets pointing close to the line ofsight of the observer. Their spectral energy distributions are dominated by non-thermal emission from the jet,consisting of two main bumps. For the so-called extreme blazars, these components each peak in the X-rayand GeV-TeV bands. Recent observations have revealed that in a few of these objects, the energy of the second peak exceedsseveral TeV (e.g. 1ES 0229+200). These intriguing objects have been suggested as sources of hadronic gamma-ray emission as well as high-energy neutrinos. Their hard TeV spectra are also valuable for indirectly probingthe extragalactic background light and the intergalactic magnetic field. In this contribution, we present the results of our observing campaign on ten promising targets performedin very-high-energygamma rays with the MAGIC telescopes. Modelling of their broadband spectra is alsodiscussed. Furthermore, we propose new targets for current and future TeV gamma-ray telescopes, selectedon the basis of hard X-ray and GeV gamma-ray emission.

Abstract

The astrophysical journal 863(1), L10 (2018). doi:10.3847/2041-8213/aad083, A neutrino with energy ∼290 TeV, IceCube-170922A, was detected in coincidence with the BL Lac object TXS 0506+056 during enhanced gamma-ray activity, with chance coincidence being rejected at ∼3σ level. We monitored the object in the very-high-energy (VHE) band with the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes for ∼41 hr from 1.3 to 40.4 days after the neutrino detection. Day-timescale variability is clearly resolved. We interpret the quasi-simultaneous neutrino and broadband electromagnetic observations with a novel one-zone lepto-hadronic model, based on interactions of electrons and protons co-accelerated in the jet with external photons originating from a slow-moving plasma sheath surrounding the faster jet spine. We can reproduce the multiwavelength spectra of TXS 0506+056 with neutrino rate and energy compatible with IceCube-170922A, and with plausible values for the jet power of $\sim 10^{45} - 4 \times 10^{46} erg s^{-1}$. The steep spectrum observed by MAGIC is concordant with internal γγ absorption above ∼100 GeV entailed by photohadronic production of a ∼290 TeV neutrino, corroborating a genuine connection between the multi-messenger signals. In contrast to previous predictions of predominantly hadronic emission from neutrino sources, the gamma-rays can be mostly ascribed to inverse Compton upscattering of external photons by accelerated electrons. The X-ray and VHE bands provide crucial constraints on the emission from both accelerated electrons and protons.
