Search

We present the results of a search for nonlinear gravitational wave memory in the NANOGrav 15-year data set. We find no significant evidence for memory signals in the dataset, with a maximum Bayes factor of 3.1 in favor of a model including memory. We therefore place upper limits on the strain of potential gravitational wave memory events as a function of sky location and observing epoch. We find upper limits that are not always more constraining than previous NANOGrav results. We show that it is likely due to the increase in common red noise between the 12.5-year and 15-year NANOGrav datasets.

We revisit the classical problem of denoising a one-dimensional scalar-valued function by minimizing the sum of an $L^2$ fidelity term and the total variation, scaled by a regularization parameter. This study focuses on proving that the jump set of solutions, corresponding to discontinuities or edges, as well as the amplitude of the jumps are nonincreasing as the regularization parameter increases. Our results apply to input functions in $L^\infty$ with left and right approximate limits everywhere, extending beyond the traditional setting of functions of bounded variation. The proof leverages competitor constructions and convexity properties of the taut string problem, a well-known equivalent formulation of the TV model. Such a monotonicity property reflects that the extent to which geometric and topological features of the original signal are preserved is consistent with the amount of smoothing desired when formulating the denoising method., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

We present the first catalog of fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies from CHIME/FRB Outriggers, selected uniformly in the radio and the optical by localizing 81 new bursts to 2'' x ~60'' accuracy using CHIME and the KKO Outrigger, located 66 km from CHIME. Of the 81 localized bursts, we use the Probabilistic Association of Transients to their Hosts (PATH) algorithm to securely identify 21 new FRB host galaxies, and compile spectroscopic redshifts for 19 systems, 15 of which are newly obtained via spectroscopic observations. The most nearby source is FRB 20231229A, at a distance of 90 Mpc. One burst in our sample is from a previously reported repeating source in a galaxy merger (FRB 20190303A). Three new FRB host galaxies (FRBs 20230203A, 20230703A, and 20231206A) are found towards X-ray and optically selected galaxy clusters, potentially doubling the sample of known galaxy cluster FRBs. A search for radio counterparts reveals that FRB 20231128A is associated with a luminous persistent radio source (PRS) candidate with high significance ($P_{cc} \sim 10^{-2}$). If its compactness is confirmed, it would be the nearest known compact PRS at $z = 0.1079$. Our catalog significantly increases the statistics of the Macquart relation at low redshifts ($z < 0.2$). In the near future, the completed CHIME/FRB Outriggers array will produce hundreds of FRBs localized with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Cloud systems are the backbone of today's computing industry. Yet, these systems remain complicated to design, build, operate, and improve. All these tasks require significant manual effort by both developers and operators of these systems. To reduce this manual burden, in this paper we set forth a vision for achieving holistic automation, intent-based system design and operation. We propose intent as a new abstraction within the context of system design and operation. Intent encodes the functional and operational requirements of the system at a high-level, which can be used to automate design, implementation, operation, and evolution of systems. We detail our vision of intent-based system design, highlight its four key components, and provide a roadmap for the community to enable autonomous systems.

Realizing the vision of using AI agents to automate critical IT tasks depends on the ability to measure and understand effectiveness of proposed solutions. We introduce ITBench, a framework that offers a systematic methodology for benchmarking AI agents to address real-world IT automation tasks. Our initial release targets three key areas: Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Compliance and Security Operations (CISO), and Financial Operations (FinOps). The design enables AI researchers to understand the challenges and opportunities of AI agents for IT automation with push-button workflows and interpretable metrics. ITBench includes an initial set of 94 real-world scenarios, which can be easily extended by community contributions. Our results show that agents powered by state-of-the-art models resolve only 13.8% of SRE scenarios, 25.2% of CISO scenarios, and 0% of FinOps scenarios. We expect ITBench to be a key enabler of AI-driven IT automation that is correct, safe, and fast.

The rapid increase in LLM ubiquity and scale levies unprecedented demands on computing infrastructure. These demands not only incur large compute and memory resources, but also significant energy, yielding large operational and embodied carbon emissions. In this work, we present two main observations. First, while GPUs dominate operational carbon, host processing systems (e.g., CPUs, memory, storage) dominate embodied carbon. Second, based on traces from production deployment of two Generative AI services in the cloud, offline, batch-inference accounts for a significant portion (up to 55\%) of serving capacity. We propose four pillars of carbon-conscious infrastructure design for LLM serving systems: \textbf{\textit{Reduce, Reuse, Rightsize, and Recycle}}. We demonstrate that EcoServe can lower carbon emissions by up to 47\%, compared to performance, energy, and cost-optimized design points, while maintaining performance targets and SLOs.

Recent advances in generative AI have led to large multi-modal models (LMMs) capable of simultaneously processing inputs of various modalities such as text, images, video, and audio. While these models demonstrate impressive capabilities, efficiently serving them in production environments poses significant challenges due to their complex architectures and heterogeneous resource requirements. We present the first comprehensive systems analysis of two prominent LMM architectures, decoder-only and cross-attention, on six representative open-source models. We investigate their multi-stage inference pipelines and resource utilization patterns that lead to unique systems design implications. We also present an in-depth analysis of production LMM inference traces, uncovering unique workload characteristics, including variable, heavy-tailed request distributions, diverse modal combinations, and bursty traffic patterns. Our key findings reveal that different LMM inference stages exhibit highly heterogeneous performance characteristics and resource demands, while concurrent requests across modalities lead to significant performance interference. To address these challenges, we propose a decoupled serving architecture that enables independent resource allocation and adaptive scaling for each stage. We further propose optimizations such as stage colocation to maximize throughput and resource utilization while meeting the latency objectives.

In this work we prove that quantum error correcting codes do not fix isotropic errors, even assuming that their correction circuits do not introduce new errors. We say that a quantum code does not fix a quantum computing error if its application does not reduce the variance of the error. Compound AI Systems, integrating multiple interacting components like models, retrievers, and external tools, have emerged as essential for addressing complex AI tasks. However, current implementations suffer from inefficient resource utilization due to tight coupling between application logic and execution details, a disconnect between orchestration and resource management layers, and the perceived exclusiveness between efficiency and quality. We propose a vision for resource-efficient Compound AI Systems through a declarative workflow programming model and an adaptive runtime system for dynamic scheduling and resource-aware decision-making. Decoupling application logic from low-level details exposes levers for the runtime to flexibly configure the execution environment and resources, without compromising on quality. Enabling collaboration between the workflow orchestration and cluster manager enables higher efficiency through better scheduling and resource management. We are building a prototype system, called Murakkab, to realize this vision. Our preliminary evaluation demonstrates speedups up to $\sim 3.4\times$ in workflow completion times while delivering $\sim 4.5\times$ higher energy efficiency, showing promise in optimizing resources and advancing AI system design.

We describe the most general local, Lorentz-invariant, effective field theory of scalars, fermions and gauge bosons up to mass dimension 6. We first obtain both a Green and a physical basis for such an effective theory, together with the on-shell reduction of the former to the latter. A set of n segments in the plane may form a Euclidean TSP tour, a tree, or a matching, among others. Optimal TSP tours as well as minimum spanning trees and perfect matchings have no crossing segments, but several heuristics and approximation algorithms may produce solutions with crossings. If two segments cross, then we can reduce the total length with the following flip operation. We remove a pair of crossing segments, and insert a pair of non-crossing segments, while keeping the same vertex degrees. In this paper, we consider the number of flips performed under different assumptions, using a new unifying framework that applies to tours, trees, matchings, and other types of (multi)graphs. Motivation: The Electron Microscopy Data Bank (EMDB) is a key repository for 3D electron microscopy (3DEM) data but lacks comprehensive annotations and connections to most of the related biological, functional, and structural data. This limitation arises from the optional nature of such information to reduce depositor burden and the complexity of maintaining up-to-date external references, often requiring depositor consent. To address these challenges, we developed EMICSS (EMDB Integration with Complexes, Structures, and Sequences), an independent system that automatically updates cross-references with over 20 external resources, including UniProt, AlphaFold DB, PubMed, Complex Portal and Gene Ontology. Results: EMICSS (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/emdb/emicss) annotations are accessible in multiple formats for every EMDB entry and its linked resources, and programmatically via the EMDB Application Programming Interface (API). EMICSS plays a crucial role supporting the EMDB website, with annotations being used on entry pages, statistics, and in the search system. Compute Express Link (CXL) is widely-supported interconnect standard that promises to enable memory disaggregation in data centers. CXL allows for memory pooling, which can be used to create a shared memory space across multiple servers. However, CXL does not specify how to actually build a memory pool. Existing proposals for CXL memory pools are expensive, as they require CXL switches or large multi-headed devices. In this paper, we propose a new design for CXL memory pools that is cost-effective. We call these designs Octopus topologies. Our design uses small CXL devices that can be made cheaply and offer fast access latencies. Specifically, we propose asymmetric CXL topologies where hosts connect to different sets of CXL devices. This enables pooling and sharing memory across multiple hosts even as each individual CXL device is only connected to a small number of hosts. Importantly, this uses hardware that is readily available today. We also show the trade-off in terms of CXL pod size and cost overhead per host. Octopus improves the Pareto frontier defined by prior policies, e.g., offering to connect 3x as many hosts at 17% lower cost per host.

Stroke rehabilitation continues to face challenges in accessibility and patient engagement, where traditional approaches often fall short. Virtual reality (VR)-based telerehabilitation offers a promising avenue, by enabling home-based recovery through immersive environments and gamification. This systematic review evaluates current VR solutions for upper-limb post-stroke recovery, focusing on design principles, safety measures, patient-therapist communication, and strategies to promote motivation and adherence. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and ScienceDirect. The review reveals a scarcity of studies meeting the inclusion criteria, possibly reflecting the challenges inherent in the current paradigm of VR telerehabilitation systems. Although these systems have potential to enhance accessibility and patient autonomy, they often lack standardized safety protocols and reliable real-time monitoring. Human-centered design principles are evident in some solutions, but inconsistent patient involvement during the development process limits their usability and clinical relevance. Furthermore, communication between patients and therapists remains constrained by technological barriers, although advancements in real-time feedback and adaptive systems offer promising solutions. This review underscores the potential of VR telerehabilitation to address critical needs in upper-limb stroke recovery while highlighting the importance of addressing existing limitations to ensure broader clinical implementation and improved patient outcomes.

The field of serious games for health has grown significantly, demonstrating effectiveness in various clinical contexts such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and degenerative neurological diseases. Despite their potential benefits, therapists face barriers to adopting serious games in rehabilitation, including limited training and game literacy, concerns about cost and equipment availability, and a lack of evidence-based research on game effectiveness. Serious games for rehabilitation often involve repetitive exercises, which can be tedious and reduce motivation for continued rehabilitation, treating clients as passive recipients of clinical outcomes rather than players. This study identifies gaps and provides essential insights for advancing serious games in rehabilitation, aiming to enhance their engagement for clients and effectiveness as a therapeutic tool. Addressing these challenges requires a paradigm shift towards developing and co-creating serious games for rehabilitation with therapists, researchers, and stakeholders. Furthermore, future research is crucial to advance the development of serious games, ensuring they adhere to evidence-based principles and engage both clients and therapists. This endeavor will identify gaps in the field, inspire new directions, and support the creation of practical guidelines for serious games research.

Swift discovery of spin-crossover materials for their potential application in quantum information devices requires techniques which enable efficient identification of suitably bistable candidates. To this end, we screened the Cambridge Structural Database to develop a specialized database of 1,439 materials and computed spin-switching energies from density functional theory for each material. The database was used to train an equivariant graph convolutional neural network to predict the magnitude of the spin-conversion energy. A test mean absolute error was 360 meV. For candidate identification, we equipped the system with a relevance-based classifier. This approach leads to a nearly four-fold improvement in identifying potential spin-crossover systems of interest as compared to conventional high-throughput screening.

The rising demand for generative large language models (LLMs) poses challenges for thermal and power management in cloud datacenters. Traditional techniques often are inadequate for LLM inference due to the fine-grained, millisecond-scale execution phases, each with distinct performance, thermal, and power profiles. Additionally, LLM inference workloads are sensitive to various configuration parameters (e.g., model parallelism, size, and quantization) that involve trade-offs between performance, temperature, power, and output quality. Moreover, clouds often co-locate SaaS and IaaS workloads, each with different levels of visibility and flexibility. We propose TAPAS, a thermal- and power-aware framework designed for LLM inference clusters in the cloud. TAPAS enhances cooling and power oversubscription capabilities, reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) while effectively handling emergencies (e.g., cooling and power failures). The system leverages historical temperature and power data, along with the adaptability of SaaS workloads, to: (1) efficiently place new GPU workload VMs within cooling and power constraints, (2) route LLM inference requests across SaaS VMs, and (3) reconfigure SaaS VMs to manage load spikes and emergency situations. Our evaluation on a large GPU cluster demonstrates significant reductions in thermal and power throttling events, boosting system efficiency.

Street cats in urban areas often rely on human intervention for survival, leading to challenges in population control and welfare management. In April 2023, Hello Inc., a Chinese urban mobility company, launched the Hello Street Cat initiative to address these issues. The project deployed over 21,000 smart feeding stations across 14 cities in China, integrating livestreaming cameras and treat dispensers activated through user donations. It also promotes the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) method, supported by a community-driven platform, HelloStreetCatWiki, where volunteers catalog and identify cats. However, manual identification is inefficient and unsustainable, creating a need for automated solutions. This study explores Deep Learning-based models for re-identifying street cats in the Hello Street Cat initiative. A dataset of 2,796 images of 69 cats was used to train Siamese Networks with EfficientNetB0, MobileNet and VGG16 as base models, evaluated under contrastive and triplet loss functions. VGG16 paired with contrastive loss emerged as the most effective configuration, achieving up to 97% accuracy and an F1 score of 0.9344 during testing. The approach leverages image augmentation and dataset refinement to overcome challenges posed by limited data and diverse visual variations. These findings underscore the potential of automated cat re-identification to streamline population monitoring and welfare efforts. By reducing reliance on manual processes, the method offers a scalable and reliable solution for communitydriven initiatives. Large Language Models (LLMs) have been shown to be susceptible to jailbreak attacks, or adversarial attacks used to illicit high risk behavior from a model. Jailbreaks have been exploited by cybercriminals and blackhat actors to cause significant harm, highlighting the critical need to safeguard widely-deployed models. Safeguarding approaches, which include fine-tuning models or having LLMs "self-reflect", may lengthen the inference time of a model, incur a computational penalty, reduce the semantic fluency of an output, and restrict ``normal'' model behavior. Importantly, these Safety-Performance Trade-offs (SPTs) remain an understudied area. In this work, we introduce a novel safeguard, called SafeNudge, that combines Controlled Text Generation with "nudging", or using text interventions to change the behavior of a model. SafeNudge triggers during text-generation while a jailbreak attack is being executed, and can reduce successful jailbreak attempts by 30% by guiding the LLM towards a safe responses. It adds minimal latency to inference and has a negligible impact on the semantic fluency of outputs. Further, we allow for tunable SPTs. Continuous gravitational waves (CWs) emission from neutron stars carries information about their internal structure and equation of state, and it can provide tests of General Relativity. We present a search for CWs from a set of 45 known pulsars in the first part of the fourth LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA observing run, known as O4a. We conducted a targeted search for each pulsar using three independent analysis methods considering the single-harmonic and the dual-harmonic emission models. We find no evidence of a CW signal in O4a data for both models and set upper limits on the signal amplitude and on the ellipticity, which quantifies the asymmetry in the neutron star mass distribution. For the single-harmonic emission model, 29 targets have the upper limit on the amplitude below the theoretical spin-down limit. The lowest upper limit on the amplitude is $6.4\!\times\!10^{-27}$ for the young energetic pulsar J0537-6910, while the lowest constraint on the ellipticity is $8.8\!\times\!10^{-9}$ for the bright nearby millisecond pulsar J0437-4715. Additionally, for a subset of 16 targets we performed a narrowband search that is more robust regarding the emission model, with no evidence of a signal. The global emphasis on sustainable technologies has become a paramount concern for nations worldwide. Specifically, numerous sustainable methods are being explored as promising alternatives to the well-established vapor-compression technologies in cooling and heating devices. One such avenue gaining traction within the scientific community is the elastocaloric effect (eC). This phenomenon holds promise for efficient cooling and heating processes without causing environmental harm. Studies carried out at the nanoscale have demonstrated the efficiency of the eC, proving to be comparable to that of state-of-the-art macroscopic systems. In this study, we used classical molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the elastocaloric effect for {\gamma}-graphyne. Our analysis goes beyond obtaining changes in eC temperature and the coefficient of performance (COP) for two species of {\gamma}-graphyne nanoribbons (armchair and zigzag). We also explore their dependence on various conditions, including whether they are on deposited on a substrate or pre-strained. Our findings reveal a substantial enhancement in the elastocaloric effect for {\gamma}-graphyne nanoribbons when subjected to pre-strain, amplifying it by at least one order of magnitude. Under certain conditions, the change in the eC temperature and the COP of the structures reach expressive values as high as 224 K and 14, respectively. As is widely known, the flavour and mass eigenbasis in neutrino sector can be related by a reduced unitary matrix, described by 3 real parameters and one phase for Dirac neutrinos, and 2 extra phases if neutrinos are Majorana particles. Neutrino flavour oscillation experiments are insensitive to Majorana phases, which leads to using the PMNS matrix with only one phase to describe flavour transitions. In this paper, we point out one feature of such choice that is commonly ignored: when neutrinos propagate in matter, the reduced unitary matrix PMNS does not properly diagonalize the neutrino system. CuInS2 quantum dots have been studied in a broad range of applications, but despite this, the fine details of their charge carrier dynamics remain a subject of intense debate. Two of the most relevant points of discussion are the hole dynamics and the influence of Cu:In synthesis stoichiometry on them. It has been proposed that Cu-deficiency leads to the formation of Cu2+, affecting the localization of holes into Cu defects. Importantly, it is precisely these confined hole states which are used to explain the interesting photoluminescence properties of CuInS2 quantum dots. We use static X-ray spectroscopy to reveal no evidence for a measurable amount of native Cu2+ states in Cu-deficient samples. Instead, the improved properties of these samples are explained by an increase of crystallinity, reducing the concentration of mid gap states. Furthermore, to understand the charge carrier dynamics, herein we employ ultrafast optical transient absorption, and fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopies in combination with ultrafast X-ray absorption spectroscopy using a hard X-ray free electron laser. We demonstrate that in non-passivated samples, holes are transferred from Cu atoms in sub-picosecond timescales. We assign this transfer to occur towards the thiol-based ligands. Finally, we observe that Cu-deficient samples are more robust against the photothermal heating effects of using higher laser fluences. This is not the case for the stoichiometric sample, where heating effects on the structure are directly observed.

Computations with tensors are ubiquitous in fundamental physics, and so is the usage of Einstein's dummy index convention for the contraction of indices. For instance, $T_{ia}U_{aj}$ is readily recognized as the same as $T_{ib}U_{bj}$, but a computer does not know that T[i,a]U[a,j] is equal to T[i,b]U[b,j]. Furthermore, tensors may have symmetries which can be used to simply expressions: if $U_{ij}$ is antisymmetric, then $\alpha T_{ia}U_{aj}+\beta T_{ib}U_{jb}=\left(\alpha-\beta\right)T_{ia}U_{aj}$. The fact that tensors can have elaborate symmetries, together with the problem of dummy indices, makes it complicated to simplify polynomial expressions with tensors. In this work I will present an algorithm for doing so, which was implemented in the Mathematica package SimTeEx (Simplify Tensor Expressions). This paper addresses a two-dimensional sharp interface variational model for solid-state dewetting of thin films with surface energies, introduced by Wang, Jiang, Bao, and Srolovitz in \cite{jiang2016solid}. Using the $H^{-1}$-gradient flow structure of the evolution law, short-time existence for a surface diffusion evolution equation with curvature regularization is established in the context of epitaxially strained two-dimensional films. The main novelty, as compared to the study of the wetting regime, is the presence of moving contact lines.

Removing contaminants is a delicate yet crucial step in neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping, often considered the technique's greatest challenge. Here, we address this challenge by analysing HI intensity maps of about $100$ deg$^2$ at redshift $z\approx0.4$ collected by the MeerKAT radio telescope, a SKA Observatory (SKAO) precursor, with a combined 10.5-hour observation. Using unsupervised statistical methods, we remove the contaminating foreground emission and systematically test step-by-step common pre-processing choices to facilitate the cleaning process. We also introduce and test a novel multiscale approach, where data is redundantly decomposed into subsets referring to different spatial scales (large and small), and the cleaning procedure is performed independently. We confirm the detection of the HI cosmological signal in cross-correlation with an ancillary galactic data set without the need to correct for signal loss. In the best set-up reached, we constrain the HI distribution through the combination of its cosmic abundance ($\Omega_{\rm HI}$) and linear clustering bias ($b_{\rm HI}$) up to a cross-correlation coefficient ($r$) and measure $\Omega_{\rm HI}b_{\rm HI}r = [0.93 \pm 0.17]\,\times\,10^{-3}$ with $\approx6\sigma$ confidence. The measurement is independent of scale cuts at both edges of the probed scale range ($0.04 \lesssim k \lesssim 0.3 \,h$Mpc$^{-1}$), corroborating its robustness. Our new pipeline has successfully found an optimal compromise in separating contaminants without incurring a catastrophic signal loss, instilling more confidence in the outstanding science we can deliver with MeerKAT on the path towards HI intensity mapping surveys with the full SKAO., Comment: 24 pages (+ appendix), 24 figures. Context: Ubiquitous devices and pervasive environments are in permanent interaction in people's daily lives. In today's hyper-connected environments, it is necessary for these devices to interact with each other, transparently to the users. The problem is analyzed from the different perspectives that compose it: SOA, service composition, interaction, and the capabilities of ubiquitous devices. Problem: Currently, ubiquitous devices can interact in a limited way due to the proprietary mechanisms and protocols available on the market. The few proposals from academia have hardly achieved an impact in practice. This is not in harmony with the situation of the Internet environment and web services, which have standardized mechanisms for service composition. Aim: Apply the principles of SOA, currently standardized and tested in the information systems industry, for the connectivity of ubiquitous devices in pervasive environments. For this, a coordination framework based on these technologies is proposed. Methodology: We apply an adaptation of Design Science in our environment to allow the iterative construction and evaluation of prototypes. For this, a proof of concept is developed on which this methodology and its cycles are based. Results: We built and put into operation a coordination framework for ubiquitous devices based on WS-CDL, along with a proof of concept. In addition, we contribute to the WS-CDL language in order to support the characteristics of specific ubiquitous devices.

Graphyne is a porous two-dimensional carbon allotrope of graphene that possesses interesting physical properties, including non-null bandgap. It is composed of carbon hexagonal rings or carbon-carbon bonds connected by acetylenic chains. The diverse forms of these connections yield a variety of graphyne structures. In a previous study, we have obtained the elastic properties of seven distinct families of graphyne structures as a function of the number of acetylene chains, from 1 to 10. The Young's modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio and linear compressibility were predicted for the zigzag and armchair directions of all 70 graphyne structures. Here, we present some noteworthy findings regarding the angular dependence of these four elastic properties of asymmetric graphynes. Our results demonstrate that in a single structure, the minimum and maximum Young's modulus can vary by a factor of 10. Pulse profile stability is a central assumption of standard pulsar timing methods. Thus, it is important for pulsar timing array experiments such as the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) to account for any pulse profile variability present in their data sets. We show that in the NANOGrav 15-yr data set, the integrated pulse profile of PSR J1022+1001 as seen by the Arecibo radio telescope at 430, 1380, and 2030 MHz varies considerably in its shape from observation to observation. We investigate the possibility that this is due to the "ideal feed assumption" (IFA), on which NANOGrav's routine polarization calibration procedure relies. PSR J1022+1001 is $\sim 90\%$ polarized in one pulse profile component, and also has significant levels of circular polarization. Time-dependent deviations in the feed's polarimetric response (PR) could cause mixing between the intensity I and the other Stokes parameters, leading to the observed variability. We calibrate the PR using a mixture of Measurement Equation Modeling and Measurement Equation Template Matching techniques. The resulting profiles are no less variable than those calibrated using the IFA method, nor do they provide an improvement in the timing quality of this pulsar. We observe the pulse shape in 25-MHz bandwidths to vary consistently across the band, which cannot be explained by interstellar scintillation in combination with profile evolution with frequency. The binary pulsar J0348+0432 was previously shown to have a mass of approximately 2\,${\rm M_\odot}$, based on the combination of radial-velocity and model-dependent mass parameters derived from high-resolution optical spectroscopy of its white-dwarf companion. We present follow-up timing observations that combine archival observations with data acquired by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) pulsar instrument. We find that the inclusion of CHIME/Pulsar data yields an improved measurement of general-relativistic orbital decay in the system that falls within 1.2 $\sigma$ of the original values published by Antoniadis et al. (2013) while being roughly 6 times more precise due to the extended baseline. When we combine this new orbital evolution rate with the mass ratio determined from optical spectroscopy, we determine a pulsar mass of 1.806(37)\,${\rm M_\odot}$. For the first time for this pulsar, timing alone significantly constrains the pulsar mass. We explain why the new mass for the pulsar is $10\%$ lower and discuss how the mis-modeling of the initial observations of the white dwarf companion likely led to an inaccurate determination of the pulsar mass., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters, 12 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Gravitational waves (GWs) have rapidly become important cosmological probes since their first detection in 2015. As the number of detected events continues to rise, upcoming instruments like the Einstein Telescope (ET) and Cosmic Explorer (CE) will observe millions of compact binary (CB) mergers. These detections, coupled with galaxy surveys by instruments such as DESI, Euclid, and the Vera Rubin Observatory, will provide unique information on the large-scale structure of the universe by cross-correlating GWs with the distribution of galaxies which host them. In this paper, we focus on how these cross-correlations constrain the clustering bias of GWs emitted by the coalescence of binary black holes (BBH). This parameter links BBHs to the underlying dark matter distribution, hence informing us how they populate galaxies. Using a multi-tracer approach, we forecast the precision of these measurements under different survey combinations. Our results indicate that current GW detectors will have limited precision, with measurement errors as high as $\sim50\%$. However, third-generation detectors like ET, when cross-correlated with LSST data, can improve clustering bias measurements to within $2.5\%$. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these cross-correlations can enable a percent-level measurement of the magnification lensing effect on GWs. Despite this, there is a degeneracy between magnification and evolution biases, which hinders the precision of both. This degeneracy is most effectively addressed by assuming knowledge of one bias or targeting an optimal redshift range of $1 < z < 2.5$. Collective excitations presenting nonlinear dynamics are fundamental phenomena with broad applications. A prime example is nonlinear optics, where diverse frequency mixing processes are central to communication, sensing, wavelength conversion, and attosecond physics. Leveraging recent progress in van der Waals magnetic semiconductors, we demonstrate nonlinear opto-magnonic coupling by presenting exciton states dressed by up to 20 harmonics of magnons, resulting from their nonlinearities, in the layered antiferromagnetic semiconductor CrSBr. We also create tunable optical side bands from sum- and difference-frequency generation between two optically bright magnon modes under symmetry breaking magnetic fields. Moreover, the observed difference-frequency generation mode can be continuously tuned into resonance with one of the fundamental magnons, resulting in parametric amplification of magnons. These findings realize the modulation of the optical frequency exciton with the extreme nonlinearity of magnons at microwave frequencies, which could find applications in magnonics and hybrid quantum systems, and provide new avenues for implementing opto-magnonic devices.

Evidence has emerged for a stochastic signal correlated among 67 pulsars within the 15-year pulsar-timing data set compiled by the NANOGrav collaboration. Similar signals have been found in data from the European, Indian, Parkes, and Chinese PTAs. This signal has been interpreted as indicative of the presence of a nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background. To explore the internal consistency of this result we investigate how the recovered signal strength changes as we remove the pulsars one by one from the data set. We calculate the signal strength using the (noise-marginalized) optimal statistic, a frequentist metric designed to measure correlated excess power in the residuals of the arrival times of the radio pulses. We identify several features emerging from this analysis that were initially unexpected. The significance of these features, however, can only be assessed by comparing the real data to synthetic data sets. After conducting identical analyses on simulated data sets, we do not find anything inconsistent with the presence of a stochastic gravitational wave background in the NANOGrav 15-year data. The methodologies developed here can offer additional tools for application to future, more sensitive data sets. While this analysis provides an internal consistency check of the NANOGrav results, it does not eliminate the necessity for additional investigations that could identify potential systematics or uncover unmodeled physical phenomena in the data., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

Pulsar timing array observations have found evidence for an isotropic gravitational wave background with the Hellings-Downs angular correlations, expected from general relativity. This interpretation hinges on the measured shape of the angular correlations, which is predominately quadrupolar under general relativity. Here we explore a more flexible parameterization: we expand the angular correlations into a sum of Legendre polynomials and use a Bayesian analysis to constrain their coefficients with the 15-year pulsar timing data set collected by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). When including Legendre polynomials with multipoles $\ell \geq 2$, we only find a significant signal in the quadrupole with an amplitude consistent with general relativity and non-zero at the $\sim 95\%$ confidence level and a Bayes factor of 200. When we include multipoles $\ell \leq 1$, the Bayes factor evidence for quadrupole correlations decreases by more than an order of magnitude due to evidence for a monopolar signal at approximately 4 nHz which has also been noted in previous analyses of the NANOGrav 15-year data. Further work needs to be done in order to better characterize the properties of this monopolar signal and its effect on the evidence for quadrupolar angular correlations., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

While WISE is the largest, best quality infrared all-sky survey to date, a smaller coverage mission, Spitzer, was designed to have better sensitivity and spatial resolution at similar wavelengths. Confusion and contamination in WISE data result in discrepancies between them. We present a novel approach to work with WISE measurements with the goal of maintaining both its high coverage and vast amount of data while taking full advantage of the higher sensitivity and spatial resolution of Spitzer. We have applied machine learning (ML) techniques to a complete WISE data sample of open cluster members, using a training set of paired data from high-quality Spitzer Enhanced Imaging Products (SEIP), MIPS and IRAC, and allWISE catalogs, W1 (3.4 {\mu}m) to W4 (22 {\mu}m) bands. We have tested several ML regression models with the aim of predicting mid-infrared fluxes at MIPS1 (24 {\mu}m) and IRAC4 (8 {\mu}m) bands from WISE fluxes and quality flags. In addition, to improve the prediction quality, we have implemented feature selection techniques to remove irrelevant WISE variables. We have notably enhanced WISE detection capabilities, mostly at lowest magnitudes, which previously showed the largest discrepancies with Spitzer. In our particular case, extremely randomized trees was found to be the best algorithm to predict mid-infrared fluxes from WISE variables. We have tested our results in the SED of members of IC 348. We show discrepancies in the measurements of Spitzer and WISE and demonstrate the good concordance of our predicted fluxes with the real ones. ML is a fast and powerful tool that can be used to find hidden relationships between datasets, as the ones that exist between WISE and Spitzer fluxes. We believe this approach could be employed for other samples from the allWISE catalog with SEIP positional counterparts, and in other astrophysical studies with analogous discrepancies., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

We revisit a time-dependent, oval-shaped billiard to investigate a phase transition from bounded to unbounded energy growth. In the static case, the phase space exhibits a mixed structure. The chaotic sea in the static scenario leads to average energy growth for a time-dependent boundary. However, inelastic collisions between the particle and the boundary limit this unbounded energy increase. This transition displays properties similar to continuous phase transitions in statistical mechanics, including scale invariance, interrelated critical exponents governed by scaling laws, and an order parameter/susceptibility approaching zero/infinity at the transition. Furthermore, the system exhibits an elementary excitation that promotes particle diffusion and lacks topological defects that provide modifications to the probability distribution function.

Among the challenges of efficiently managing a factory, inventory management is essential for minimizing operational costs and delivery times. In this paper, we focus on optimizing item allocation in warehouses that use gravity flow racks, which are designed for First In, First Out (FIFO) logistics but present challenges due to the need for frequent item reinsertions during picking operations. We introduce a novel strategy formulated as a QUBO problem, suitable for classical, quantum, and hybrid hardware implementations. By leveraging advances in Adiabatic Quantum Computing and Quantum Annealing, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our strategy through simulations and real-world scenarios. The results highlight the potential of quantum-hybrid approaches to significantly enhance operational efficiency in warehouse management.

The vertical plane transverse emittance of accelerated electron bunches at the AWAKE experiment at CERN has been determined, using three different methods of data analysis. This is a proof-of-principle measurement using the existing AWAKE electron spectrometer to validate the measurement technique. Large values of the geometric emittance, compared to that of the injection beam, are observed ($\sim \SI{0.5}{\milli\metre\milli\radian}$ compared with $\sim \SI{0.08}{\milli\metre\milli\radian}$), which is in line with expectations of emittance growth arising from plasma density ramps and large injection beam bunch size. Future iterations of AWAKE are anticipated to operate in conditions where emittance growth is better controlled, and the effects of the imaging systems of the existing and future spectrometer designs on the ability to measure the emittance are discussed. Good performance of the instrument down to geometric emittances of approximately $\SI{1e-4}{\milli\metre\milli\radian}$ is required, which may be possible with improved electron optics and imaging., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

As part of the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) project, we report 41 new Rotation Measures (RMs) from 20 repeating Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) obtained between 2019 and 2023 for which no previous RM was determined. We also report 22 additional RM measurements for eight further repeating FRBs. We observe temporal RM variations in practically all repeating FRBs. Repeaters appear to be separated into two categories: those with dynamic and those with stable RM environments, differentiated by the ratios of RM standard deviations over the averaged RM magnitudes. Sources from stable RM environments likely have little RM contributions from the interstellar medium (ISM) of their host galaxies, whereas sources from dynamic RM environments share some similarities with Galactic pulsars in eclipsing binaries but appear distinct from Galactic centre solitary pulsars. We observe a new stochastic, secular, and again stochastic trend in the temporal RM variation of FRB 20180916B, which does not support binary orbit modulation being the reason for this RM changes. We highlight two more repeaters that show RM sign change, namely FRBs 20290929C and 20190303A. We perform an updated comparison of polarization properties between repeating and non-repeating FRBs, which show a marginal dichotomy in their distribution of electron-density-weighted parallel-component line-of-sight magnetic fields., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Free electrons in the interstellar medium refract and diffract radio waves along multiple paths, resulting in angular and temporal broadening of radio pulses that limits pulsar timing precision. We determine multifrequency, multi-epoch scattering times for the large dispersion measure millisecond pulsar J1903+0327 by developing a three component model for the emitted pulse shape that is convolved with a best fit pulse broadening function (PBF) identified from a family of thin-screen and extended-media PBFs. We show that the scattering time, $\tau$, at a fiducial frequency of 1500 MHz changes by approximately 10% over a 5.5yr span with a characteristic timescale of approximately 100 days. We also constrain the spectral index and inner scale of the wavenumber spectrum of electron density variations along this line of sight. We find that the scaling law for $\tau$ vs. radio frequency is strongly affected by any mismatch between the true and assumed PBF or between the true and assumed intrinsic pulse shape. We show using simulations that refraction is a plausible cause of the epoch dependence of $\tau$, manifesting as changes in the PBF shape and $1/e$ time scale. Electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy sources (RES) are vital components of sustainable energy systems, yet their uncoordinated integration can pose substantial challenges to grid stability, such as unmanaged peak loads and energy balance issues. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), offer a promising solution to address these challenges by enabling bidirectional energy flow between EVs and the grid. As such, EVs can be used in advances Demand Response (DR) strategies to optimize energy use and mitigate the intermittency of renewable generation. To reach such advantages, optimization algorithms need data on EV energy flexibility, such as charging patterns and usage preferences. However, data collection remains constrained by challenges such as high costs, user engagement, data privacy concerns, and limited access to open-source datasets on EV energy flexibility. This paper presents FlexiGen an open-source stochastic dataset generator tool designed to overcome the data limitations in EV flexibility for V2G and V1G DR applications. FlexiGen generates synthetic datasets encompassing realist EV usage patterns, behaviours and flexibility scenarios for household and office routines. To generate these datasets, FlexiGen uses a series of configurable probabilistic variables, such as stochastic user routines, traffic conditions, charger types, car average electricity consumption and State of Charge (SoC). The generated datasets include an hourly routine with the EV State of connection, Destination Charger, Estimated Departure Time, Required SOC at Departure, Estimated Arrival Time, and Estimated SOC at Arrival. Accompanying this publication an example dataset is generated for 3 households with 1 EV each, and 1 office building with 3 EVs. In the quest for electrically-driven soft actuators, the focus has shifted away from liquid-gas phase transition, commonly associated with reduced strain rates and actuation delays, in favour of electrostatic and other electrothermal actuation methods. This prevented the technology from capitalizing on its unique characteristics, particularly: low voltage operation, controllability, scalability, and ease of integration into robots. Here, we introduce a phase transition electric soft actuator capable of strain rates of over 16%/s and pressurization rates of 100 kPa/s, approximately one order of magnitude higher than previous attempts. Blocked forces exceeding 50 N were achieved while operating at voltages up to 24 V. We propose a method for selecting working fluids which allows for application-specific optimization, together with a nonlinear control approach that reduces both parasitic vibrations and control lag. We demonstrate the integration of this technology in soft robotic systems, including the first quadruped robot powered by liquid-gas phase transition.

In this second paper on the DECam deep drilling field (DDF) program we release 2,020 optical gri-band light curves for transients and variables in the extragalactic COSMOS and ELAIS fields based on time series observations with a 3-day cadence from semester 2021A through 2023A. In order to demonstrate the wide variety of time domain events detected by the program and encourage others to use the data set, we characterize the sample by presenting a brief analysis of the light curve parameters such as time span, amplitude, and peak brightness. We also present preliminary light curve categorizations, and identify potential stellar variables, active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, supernovae (such as Type Ia, Type IIP, superluminous, and gravitationally lensed supernovae), and fast transients. Where relevant, the number of identified transients is compared to the predictions of the original proposal. We also discuss the challenges of analyzing DDF data in the context of the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory and its Legacy Survey of Space and Time, which will include DDFs. The detection of a stochastic gravitational wave background by pulsar timing arrays suggests the presence of a supermassive black hole binary population. Although the observed spectrum generally aligns with predictions from orbital evolution driven by gravitational wave emission in circular orbits, there is a discernible preference for a turnover at the lowest observed frequencies. This turnover could indicate a significant hardening phase, transitioning from early environmental influences to later stages predominantly influenced by gravitational wave emission. In the vicinity of these binaries, the ejection of stars or dark matter particles through gravitational three-body slingshots efficiently extracts orbital energy, leading to a low-frequency turnover in the spectrum. By analyzing the NANOGrav 15-year data, we assess how the gravitational wave spectrum depends on the initial inner galactic profile prior to disruption by binary ejections, accounting for a range of initial binary eccentricities. Our findings suggest a parsec-scale galactic center density around $10^6\,M_\odot/\textrm{pc}^3$ across most of the parameter space, offering insights into the environmental effects on black hole evolution and combined matter density near galaxy centers., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Based on radial velocities, EXORAP photometry, and activity indicators, the HADES team reported a 16.3-day rotation period for the M dwarf GJ 3942. However, an RV--H$\alpha$ magnitude-squared coherence estimate has significant peaks at frequencies 1/16 cycles/day and 1/32 cycles/day. We re-analyze HADES data plus Hipparcos, SuperWASP, and TESS photometry to see whether the rotation period could be 32 days with 16-day harmonic. SuperWASP shows no significant periodicities, while the Hipparcos observing cadence is suboptimal for detecting 16- and 32-day periodicities. Although the average TESS periodogram has peaks at harmonics of 1/16 cycles/day, the harmonic sequence is not fully resolved according to the Rayleigh criterion. The TESS observations suggest a 1/16 cycles/day rotation frequency and a 1/32 cycles/day subharmonic, though resolution makes the TESS rotation detection ambiguous., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, submitted to RNAAS
