7. Resilience in adolescent mental health

Abstract

Background: Previous research has defined resilience in a variety of ways. Therefore, in order to determine how resilience works within adolescent mental health, adolescent groups facing diverse challenges need to be explored. Objective: The aim of this research is to further define resilience, specifically in the context of adolescent mental health. This research intends to reveal those who do well despite facing major challenges and determine the assets and resources that confer resilience for these individuals. Specific factors might be found to separate those who negotiate the challenges well and those who do not. Methods: The current literature surrounding the concept of resilience was explored through a literature review. The available interventions for child anxiety and bullying was explored through a scoping review. The resilience of two separate adolescent groups was investigated; young adolescents as they transitioned from primary school to secondary school and bullied LGBTQ adolescents. By including two very different groups from opposite ends of adolescence, the evolution of resilience throughout adolescence was observed. The outcomes of these adolescents were determined by anxiety and wellbeing measures. Good outcomes, therefore, suggested higher resilience in order to negotiate the challenges they encountered. Potential resilience factors were measured and compared between those who emerged with either good or poor outcomes, determining which factors were associated with good outcomes and, therefore, resilience. Results: The results of the research suggested that personal and social factors in the form of self-belief and perceived social support were both associated with resilience; these factors potentially provided adolescents with the skills necessary to overcome challenges. Conclusions: Resilience is both internal and external to the individual, each unique adolescent group requires their own specific assets and resources to overcome challenges.

Abstract

The electron spin dynamics is studied by time-resolved Kerr rotation in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells embedded in a negatively doped-intrinsic-positively doped structures grown on (111)A or (111)B-oriented substrates. In both cases the spin lifetimes are significantly increased by applying an external electric field but this field has to point along the growth direction for structures grown on (111)A and opposite to it for the ones grown on (111)B. This extended electron spin lifetime is the result of the suppression of the D'yakonov-Perel spin relaxation mechanism [Sov. Phys. Solid State 13, 3023 (1972)] due to the cancellation effect of the internal Dresselhaus term [Phys. Rev. 100, 580 (1955)] with the external electric field induced Rashba one [J. Phys. C 17, 6039 (1984)], both governing the conduction band spin-orbit splitting. Abstract

The electron spin dynamics in (111)-oriented GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells is studied by timeresolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. By applying an external field of 50 kV/cm a two-order of magnitude increase of the spin relaxation time can be observed reaching values larger than 30 ns; this is a consequence of the electric field tuning of the spin-orbit conduction band splitting which can almost vanish when the Rashba term compensates exactly the Dresselhaus one. The measurements under transverse magnetic field demonstrate that the electron spin relaxation time for the three space directions can be tuned simultaneously with the applied electric field., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We have demonstrated by electroluminescence the injection of spin polarized electrons through Co/Al2O3/GaAs tunnel barrier into p-doped InAs/GaAs quantum dots embedded in a PIN GaAs light emitting diode. The spin relaxation processes in the p-doped quantum dots are characterized independently by optical measurements (time and polarization resolved photoluminescence). The measured electroluminescence circular polarization is about 15 % at low temperature in a 2T magnetic field, leading to an estimation of the electrical spin injection yield of 35%. 29. Directional migration of the neural crest : an interplay between contact inhibition of locomotion and co-attraction

Abstract

Collective cell migration is recognised as a common feature of cell movement in vivo. Despite its importance for both morphogenesis and malignant progression, little is known about how directional and coordinated cell movements are regulated collectively. An interesting example of collective migration in vivo is the migration of Neural Crest (NC) cells. NC cells are highly migratory and multipotent embryonic cells, which migrate with remarkable directionality and coordination. In this thesis it is proposed that a mayor force in allowing NC collective directionality is given by local cell-cell interactions. Two main interactions, a repulsive and an attractive one, are identified here and their role in NC migration is analysed. First, it is shown that Contact Inhibition of Locomotion (CIL) is essential for NC migration. These cells collapse their protrusions upon contact with others and polarise towards cell-free regions leading to cell dispersion. Also, it is shown that the non-canonical Wnt signalling is crucial in this process as its members localise at the site of contact. This leads to activation of RhoA and inhibition of cell protrusions in this region. These results provide one of the rst examples of CIL in vivo and establish a novel role for non-canonical Wnt signalling. Second, a longer-range attractive interaction is also described here in a novel mechanism termed coattraction. It is shown in silico, in vitro and in vivo that when CIL is combined with coattraction, directional collective movements emerge instead of the simple dispersion allowed by CIL. Surprisingly, it was found that the anaphylatoxin/chemoattractant C3a and its receptor C3aR mediate NC coattraction. Finally, it is proposed that CIL and coattraction act together to allow cell collectives, such as the NC, to self-organise allowing a more effcient response to external signals such as chemoattractants and restrictive cues.

Abstract

At large scales, the mechanisms underpinning stability in natural communities may vary in importance due to changes in species composition, mean abundance, and species richness. Here we link species characteristics (niche positions) and community characteristics (richness and abundance) to evaluate the importance of stability mechanisms in 156 butterfly communities monitored across three European countries and spanning five bioclimatic regions. We construct niche-based hierarchical structural Bayesian models to explain first differences in abundance, population stability, and species richness between the countries, and then explore how these factors impact community stability both directly and indirectly (via synchrony and population stability). Species richness was partially explained by the position of a site relative to the niches of the species pool, and species near the centre of their niche had higher average population stability. The differences in mean abundance, population stability, and species richness then influenced how much variation in community stability they explained across the countries. We found, using variance partitioning, that community stability in Finnish communities was most influenced by community abundance, whereas this aspect was unimportant in Spain with species synchrony explaining most variation; the UK was somewhat intermediate with both factors explaining variation. Across all countries, the diversity–stability relationship was indirect with species richness reducing synchrony which increased community stability, with no direct effects of species richness. Our results suggest that in natural communities, biogeographical variation observed in key drivers of stability, such as population abundance and species richness, leads to community stability being limited by different factors and that this can partially be explained due to the niche characteristics of the European butterfly assemblage.
