5. Professional translations of non-native English : ‘before and after’ texts from the European Parliament’s Editing Unit

Abstract

Since English has become the dominant global language, research efforts have mostly concentrated on spoken English as a lingua franca (ELF). Written ELF is largely under-researched both in relation to translation and otherwise. This study examines ‘before and after’ texts made available by the European Parliament’s Editing Unit. The original texts were written by non-native English speakers (before) and subsequently revised by native English editors (after) with a view to delivering consistent edited source texts as a basis for translation into different EU languages. In a pre-study, 12 texts (and their edited versions) were scrutinised for potential translation problems. In the main study, three of the 12 originals and their three edited counterparts were translated by six professional translators. A mixed-method approach was adopted: product-based analysis of the translations for actual translation problems combined with screen-recording-prompted retrospective translator comments and screen-recording-based indicators for the time taken to translate edited and non-edited segments. The results suggest that there is a sufficiently large number of challenges arising from non-standard source segments to prolong translational decision-making and provoke inadequate solutions.

Abstract

In general the current prospects for EU 27 yields are on average. Compared to our last forecasts soft wheat has been slightly revised down at EU 27 level mainly due to lowered yield expectations for Germany, Bulgaria and Romania; whereas soft wheat yields are slightly increased for France and United Kingdom. Winter barley yields are now forecast at a lower level compared to the last Bulletin by 2.7 % at EU 27 mainly due to yield reductions for Germany and France. Spring barley at EU 27 increased by 5 % compared to the last Bulletin as the yield forecast for Spain was increased by 11 %. Rape seed yield is stable. The decrease in yield for Germany compared to the last Bulletin is compensated by an increase in France., JRC.H.4-Monitoring Agricultural Resources

Abstract

Very high temperatures and scarce rainfall characterised the weather conditions in South and South-East Europe from mid-July until mid-August. The dry weather accelerated the harvesting of winter cereals. The inadequate water supply caused irreversible damages in the summer crops. The well-below average yield forecast for summer crops mirrors the severity of the situation in Spain, Italy, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Seasonal or slightly colder than usual thermal conditions dominated in North and North-West Europe. Precipitation decreased and significant rainfall events became less frequent in this region as compared to the first half of July, except for Ireland and Northern UK where wet conditions persisted. The dryer weather facilitated the harvest of winter cereals and provided good conditions for the growth and development of summer crops, JRC.H.4-Monitoring Agricultural Resources

Abstract

Persisting high temperatures in southern and south east Europe coupled with scarce rain put plants in difficulties. Main countries affected are Spain, Italy, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria as well as Ukraine. Harvest of winter cereals in southern European countries is almost completed and well advanced in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary due to an early maturity of the crops. Western Europe experienced a rainy period with unsettled weather and below average temperatures. This added up to healthy conditions in France, Germany and Poland for the last growing stages of winter cereals. Rain amounts were even excessive in the United Kingdom. In France and Germany the harvest has started in a timely fashion interrupted by rains whereas in UK winter barley has started with a delay and further delays for the remaining winter cereals are expected due to the bad weather. Compared to our last Bulletin soft wheat yield at EU 27 is slightly revised down mainly due to lower yields now forecast for UK, Romania, Austria and Spain. Also spring barley yield is revised down as the forecast for Spain was lowered again but still being close to the 5 years’ average. In Romania, Hungary and Italy the recent negative weather conditions for maize led to a decrease of the forecasts resulting in a decrease of grain maize yield of 9 % at EU 27 level compared to the last forecasts issued., JRC.H.4-Monitoring Agricultural Resources

Average temperature accumulation in Europe north of 50 deg latitude with warm days end of May followed by a fresh June. Persistently high temperatures and above-average temperature accumulation in June for all countries bordering the Black Sea as well as Spain and Italy. Well above-average precipitation in the British Isles, most of France, Austria, Romania and Bulgaria, dry conditions in Spain, Maghreb, eastern Italy, northern Germany and southern Ukraine. Compared to our last Bulletin the forecast for total cereals increased mainly due to an increase of the maize yield due to favourable growing conditions in the main producing countries, but at the same time some concern is raised for Bulgaria and Romania with heat waves forecast., JRC.H.4-Monitoring Agricultural Resources
