At the request of Salt River Project, the Museum of Northern Arizona conducted an archaeological survey of a proposed 500kV transmission line between the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (near Wintersburg, Arizona) and the Kyrene Substation (near Tempe, Arizona). During survey of the 73.3 mi right-of-way, evidences of historic and prehistoric activity were recorded at 10 sites and 43 loci of isolated artifacts or features. With few exceptions, all identified remains could be assigned to the Hohokam culture. The Museum recommends, where feasible, that all cultural remains be avoided. In instances where sites or portions of sites cannot be avoided specific mitigation recommendations are presented. This file includes related correspondence.

At the request of Salt River Project, four potential substation sites for the Cholla-Dinosaur transmission line were intensively surveyed by the Museum of Northern Arizona. The four alternative substation locations are in the Tonto National Forest near Superior, Arizona. Two of the substation localities contained archaeological remains. Reconnaissance level survey of access roads leading to the substations was also undertaken.

Between January 19 and 23, 1976, the Museum of Northern Arizona conducted archaeological investigations for the Salt River Project - Coronado Generating System - Coronado-Dinosaur Transmission Line, North End Realignment. The work, supported by contractual agreement, has consisted of an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed realignment right-of-way, around Tower 111 (Sta. 1748+30) and Tower 150 (Sta. 2375+50), and the interim report preparation associated with data collected during the field work. The Museum has used the necessary permits to conduct these investigations. This report briefly discusses Salt River Projects alternatives, and the potential impacts to the cultural resources of the various routes; also, a list of site locations is provided to aid SRP in finalizing tower locations along the realignment.

Wirth Associates contracted with the Museum of Northern Arizona to conduct an archaeological impact study of a proposed Salt River Project Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station Routing Alternate to Westwing Receiving Station. This study delineates areas with three levels of potential site occurence for the project area, and investigates potential effects on the cultural resources of the alternative corridors proposed by Salt River Project. A short data gathering phase, prior to field work, compiled information from site inventory files at the Museum of Northern Arizona and the State Parks Department. During the field investigation phase one of the routes was non-randomly sampled. This report details the scope of the archaeological study, including earlier Museum investigations, describes the typological framework and regional context, and assesses the research potential of the existing archaeological resource base. The proposed corridor segments and their potential sensitivity on the resource base is described, and general discussion for routing alternatives are made.

Since May, 1975, the Museum of Northern Arizona, Department of Anthropology (hereafter "Museum"), has conducted archaeological investigations for the Salt River Project - Coronado Generating Station, Coronado-Dinosaur Transmission System, North End Project. This work, supported by contractual agreement, has consisted of an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed right-of-way, from Sta. 0+00 - Sta. 3874+21, and a realignment around Sta. 1748+30 to Sta. 2375+50, and the analysis and report preparation associated with the data collected during the fieldwork. The Museum has used the necessary permits to conduct these investigations. This report details the Museum's involvement in this project, provides a statement for management purposes for Salt River Project, discusses the field methods employed, examines the regional archaeological conditions, including the cultural resources present along the transmission line, broadly outlines proposals for mitigations, and makes clearance recommendations based on a regional mitigation approach, as well as on the potential for avoiding archaeological sites. This document includes contributions by Dorothy M. Goddard, Patricia H. Stein, Jeannette Dickerson, and Claudia Chang.

15 mi of Extra High Voltage transmission line corridor, 2 mi of access road, and 0.9 mi of 115kV transmission line from the Silverking Substation were surveyed for archaeological resources by the Museum of Northern Arizona in April, 1978. Twelve prehistoric and historic Anglo-American affiliation archaeological sites were identified along the EHV corridor between the Silverking Substation and the Tonto National Forest boundary. An isolated recent feature, not given a site designation, was found on the proposed access road alignment. No sites were found on the 115kV alignment. The report describes the survey and its results and makes detailed archaeological clearance recommendations for the surveyed impact areas. Archaeological clearance is recommended for all surveyed areas except for the actual areas of the 12 recorded sites in the EHV corridor.

During the summer of 1988, archaeologists from Archaeological Consulting Services of Tempe, Arizona, conducted an archaeological survey of seven miles of 250-foot wide road right-of-way in Lake Pleasant Regional Park located northwest of Phoenix. This survey was conducted in order to provide inventory and assessment of the cultural resources that might be affected by the construction of additional internal roads within the park boundary. This survey resulted in the identification of nine prehistoric sites and 29 prehistoric isolated occurrences. Five of these sites were determined to have the potential to possess significant archaeological research information and, as such, may have been eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Because the sites under consideration here cannot be avoided during planned construction activities and would thus be adversely affected, it was recommended that a testing program be conducted to determine eligibility. At the request of the Bureau of Reclamation, SWCA conducted an archaeological testing program at these sites from September 18-26, 1989. The purpose of this testing program was to determine the presence or absence of significant subsurface deposits as they relate to the National Register criteria. This report documents the nature and results of the archaeological testing conducted at these five sites. Sites AZ T:3:61 (ASM), AZ T:3:62 (ASM), and AZ T:3:64 (ASM) were found to contain no significant subsurface deposits. Sites AZ T:3:60 (ASM) and AZ T:3:65 (ASM) were found to contain limited subsurface deposits consistent with those found at sites possessing similar surface manifestations from previous studies. These sites are not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. SWCA recommends that archaeological clearance be granted for the Lake Pleasant Regional Park internal roads project.

One of several construction programs proposed for inclusion in the Central Arizona Project was a system of aqueducts to link Parker Dam on the Colorado River in western Arizona and the Charleston Damsite on the San Pedro River in southeastern Arizona. Since the possibility existed that archaeological remains might be destroyed by necessary subjugation of lands for the aqueduct, the Southwest Archaeological Center of the National Park Service, U. S. Department of the Interior, made arrangements with several institutions to determine the extent of salvage archaeology requirements. The Department of Anthropology, Arizona State University was asked to conduct an archaeological survey of the Granite Reef and Salt-Gila Aqueducts from the Agua Fria River to the Gila River in central southern Arizona. A purchase order No. 931-18 was initiated by the Southwest Archaeological Center to assist Arizona State University in defraying expenses of the survey. Fieldwork on the program was undertaken with a dual purpose. First, it was necessary to complete the purposes for which the funds were made available, that was, a detailed inventory of sites endangered by proposed construction. Second, this project offered an opportunity to train students in one aspect of salvage archaeology. Since the proposed aqueduct route traversed several landforms and biotic zones, it was possible to include observations on settlement patterns, utilization of the environment, distribution of distinctive cultural remains, and a number of new concepts in surveying techniques. The observations and data obtained added significant depth to the usual survey for salvage archaeology purposes. Only a summary has been included here; detailed notes, as well as the collections, are on file at the Anthropology Laboratory, Arizona State University. Maps of the aqueduct routes were obtained from the Phoenix Office of the Bureau of Reclamation. No stakes were yet in place in the field and constant triangulation with instruments was necessary to be assured of map-field correspondence of location. Since changes in the line might occur when final designs are completed, every effort was made to extend the survey up to 100 meters or more on either side of the present right-of-way and proposed retarding dams. Effects of possible minor deviations were investigated; a major change would require examination of the new alignment. Arizona State University students primarily concerned with the training-research program were Don E. Simonis and Paul R. Fish. Christopher R. Lintz assisted during a major part of the program. Suzanne Kitchen and Joy Stanton were members of the field party upon several occasions. Field, laboratory, and classroom work was under the direction of Dr. Alfred E. Dittert, Jr.; Dr. James Schoenwetter provided additional instruction related to vegetation zones, surface pollen sampling, and similar specialized problems as they were encountered in the field. The research occupied available units of time between 1 October 1968 and 31 April 1969.
