Species of the genus Cynodon are among the most cultivated forage crops in the world due to their high yield and nutritional quality, and its use in cattle feeding has been associated with gains in animal weight and increased milk production. The objective of this study was to model covariance structures in Cynodon spp. clones and study the changes in ranking of the selected genotypes, since it is believed that affects the ranking of genotypes. A total of 202 genotypes were evaluated in an experiment conducted in an augmented block design with four replications and four harvests. The genotypes were assessed for plant height, green weight, percentage of dry matter, and plant vigor. Nineteen repeated measures models with different covariance structures were tested. The best-fitted model adopts the CORH covariance structure for the genetic effects. Correct modeling of the covariance structure affected the ranking of genotypes in all variables evaluated. Main conclusion: The complexes involving MYBPA2, TT2b, and TT8 proteins are the critical regulators of ANR and LAR genes to promote the biosynthesis of proanthocyanidins in the leaves of Lotus spp. The environmental impact and health of ruminants fed with forage legumes depend on the herbage's concentration and structure of proanthocyanidins (PAs). Unfortunately, the primary forage legumes (alfalfa and clover) do not contain substantial levels of PAs. No significant progress has been made to induce PAs to agronomically valuable levels in their edible organs by biotechnological approaches thus far. Building this trait requires a profound knowledge of PA regulators and their interplay in species naturally committed to accumulating these metabolites in the target organs. Against this background, we compared the shoot transcriptomes of two inter-fertile Lotus species, namely Lotus tenuis and Lotus corniculatus, polymorphic for this trait, to search for differentially expressed MYB and bHLH genes. We then tested the expression of the above-reported regulators in L. tenuis x L. corniculatus interspecific hybrids, several Lotus spp., and different L. corniculatus organs with contrasting PA levels. We identified a novel MYB activator and MYB-bHLH-based complexes that, when expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana, trans-activated the promoters of L. corniculatus anthocyanidin reductase and leucoanthocyanidin reductase 1 genes. The last are the two critical structural genes for the biosynthesis of PAs in Lotus spp. Competition between MYB activators for the transactivation of these promoters also emerged. Overall, by employing Lotus as a model genus, we refined the transcriptional network underlying PA biosynthesis in the herbage of legumes. Fodder radish is widely used as a livestock supplement, however, the nutritional value of fodder radish under different water conditions remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to assess the chemical components and in vitro, ruminal dry matter degradability of two fodder radish genotypes (Endurance and Line 2) subjected to three irrigation regimes: well-watered (W1), moderate water stress (W2), and severe water stress (W3). The analysis revealed statistically significant effects of the main factors on the chemical composition and estimates of fodder radish leaves and tubers, particularly in terms of Crude Protein (CP) and Ether Extract (EE) across genotypes. Both Endurance and Line 2 leaves exhibited interaction effects on N, P, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and Al. Meanwhile only Na, K, Zn, and Cu were affected in tubers. Abstract Introducing new grass species into cultivation has long been proposed as beneficial to increase the sustainability and diversity of productive systems. However, wild species with potential tend to show high seed dormancy, causing slow, poor, and unsynchronized seedling emergence. Meanwhile, domesticated species, such as cereals, show lower seed dormancy, facilitating their successful establishment. In this work, we conduct a review of phenotypic variation on seed dormancy and its genetic and molecular basis. This quantitative and highly heritable trait shows phenotype plasticity which is modulated by environmental factors. The level of dormancy depends on the expression of genes associated with the metabolism and sensitivity to the hormones abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellins (GA), along with other dormancy-specific genes. The genetic regulation of these traits is highly conserved across species. The low seed dormancy observed in cereals and some temperate forages was mostly unconsciously selected during various domestication processes. Emphasis is placed on selecting materials with low seed dormancy for warm-season forage grasses to improve their establishment and adoption. Finally, we review advances in the domestication of dallisgrass, where seed dormancy was considered a focus trait throughout the process.

Climate change and global warming are the foremost anthropogenically accelerated catastrophes that are already causing world-wide challenges, but threaten to thwart global food, environmental and nutritional security in the future. Climate change affects ecosystem services and interactions between biotic and abiotic factors. The most drastic consequences have been observed in the agricultural and livestock sector, with diminished production and productivity potential. Agriculture and allied sectors contribute markedly to the production of greenhouse gases; however, integrated management practices can be used to curtail greenhouse gas emissions and its adverse impacts. Forage crops and their wild relatives maintain biodiversity and ecosystem services and minimise the drastic effects of climate change. Forage crops adapted to harsh environments have certain unique features such as perenniality, deep root system, high resource-use efficiency (light, nutrients and water), and low production of methane and N2O, making them suitable for future use under climate change. This review highlights the prominent features of various cultivated and rangeland forage crops that may be crucial to understanding impacts of climate change. We discuss the wild relatives of forage crops, which are often adapted for multiple stresses, and highlight their mechanisms for adaptation under climate change. We consider the advanced breeding and biotechnological tools useful for developing climate-smart forage crops. This review provides novel insight into forage crops and their wild relatives in terms of their exploitation in future stress breeding programmes and paths for developing climate-resilient crops. Climate change substantially affects the global food, environmental and nutritional security, as well as biodiversity and ecosystem services. Wild relatives of forage crops and their functional trait diversity can be exploited for future stress breeding programs and development of climate-resilient crops. IntroductionSalt stress significantly impacts plant growth worldwide. Although alfalfa exhibits some tolerance to salt-alkali soils, the specific salt tolerance levels across different alfalfa varieties remain inadequately understood. For this purpose, we conducted a study to investigate the diversity of agronomic traits of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) under different soil environments in order to elucidate the salt tolerance of 51 alfalfa varieties.MethodsWe chose three different soil conditions for our study: normal conditions in Yantai as control, saline conditions in Yantai with soil salt concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 0.33%, and saline-alkali conditions in Dongying with soil salt concentrations ranging from 0.28 to 0.32%. We chose 51 alfalfa varieties from different sources as our experimental materials. Planting was conducted following a completely randomized block design with three replicates for each variety. Harvesting was performed when the plants reached 50% flowering, cutting them at a height of 5 cm above the ground. Comprehensive assessments encompassed 10 parameters, namely fresh weight, dry weight, stem-leaf ratio, branch count, plant height, crude protein content, crude fat content, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, and ash content.ResultsOur findings revealed that the 51 studied alfalfa varieties displayed significant generalized heritability and coefficient of variation, indicating a high level of genetic diversity. Using principal component and cluster analyses, we categorized the varieties into three distinct clusters based on their agronomic traits. Grey correlation degree analysis revealed the commendable performance of Ying st, PI 672734, and Mei zuo across diverse environments. Genotype emerged as a predominant determinant of all parameters, except crude fat, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber. Through the application of membership function analysis, PI 672768 emerged as a variety that demonstrated strong tolerance in both saline soil contexts.DiscussionDespite extensive previous studies indicating Zhong Mu No. 1 as a salt-tolerant alfalfa variety, its performance in this experiment did not distinguish itself. The findings of this study provide a fundamental basis for improving the management of saline-alkali lands and advancing alfalfa cultivation practices.

Cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer L.) is a non-bloating perennial forage legume suitable for stockpiled grazing in the fall because of its rapid regrowth and high nutritive value. Genetically diverse germplasm are needed for the development of improved cicer milkvetch cultivars that can provide consistent production across variable climatic conditions. The objective of this research was to assess the diversity and relationship of 27 cicer milkvetch populations to inform the selection of populations for future cultivars that have superior agro-morphological traits during summer and fall growth. A completely randomized field trial was established in 2019 near Clavet, Saskatchewan. In 2020 and 2021, forage dry matter yield (DMY), maximum stem length, leaf number per stem, rhizome spread, and stem density were recorded on 27 populations of cicer milkvetch in late June at a first harvest and mid-October at a stockpile harvest. All five traits were different (p < 0.05) among the populations at both harvests except for leaf number per stem in late June. Principal component analysis identified that the first three principal components described 89% of the variation in agro-morphological traits at the first and stockpile harvests. Of the agro-morphological traits, maximum stem length had the greatest correlation with forage DMY at the first harvest (r = 0.69) and stockpile harvest (r = 0.6). Our research demonstrates that there is a high morphological diversity among cicer milkvetch populations, and plant introductions, PI 362266, PI 576963, PI 440143, and PI 362254 could be used as novel genetic resources for the development of climate-resilient cultivars. Perennial ryegrass (PRG, Lolium perenne L.) breeding effort in New Zealand (NZ) has increased since c. 1990, resulting in greater functional trait diversity (e.g. heading date, ploidy, and associated Epichloë endophyte strain) in commercial products. This study quantified the variation, associations and interactions in dry matter (DM) yield, nutritive value and persistence‐related traits among commercial cultivar‐endophyte combinations released between 1973 and 2012, as a basis for assessing gains in value being delivered to the pasture‐based livestock industries. Twenty‐four or 28 combinations were compared over 3 years in two trials in each of two regions: Waikato in northern NZ (dryland), and Canterbury in central eastern South Island (irrigated). Cultivar‐endophyte combinations were sown in mixtures with white clover, and pastures were intensively grazed 8–11 times per year by dairy cows. Principal Component Analysis identified 4 distinct clusters for the DM yield variables and for metabolisable energy (ME) content in each of the four trials. A broadly‐adapted group of three late‐season flowering, AR37‐infected diploids with NZ and Spanish breeding backgrounds dominated the highest‐yielding clusters. Tetraploids dominated the high ME content clusters. Interactions with region were observed throughout the data set: the strongest of these was driven by endophyte strain effects in Waikato. High‐yielding cultivar‐endophyte combinations in these trials were also generally high‐yielding in the standard cultivar merit testing system operated in New Zealand, as interpreted via the DairyNZ Forage Value Index. However, alignment was poorer for medium‐ and lower‐yielding cultivar‐endophyte combinations. Several implications for forage evaluation methods and end‐user industries are identified. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) plant breeding has delivered several high performing and broadly adapted cultivar‐endophyte (Epichloë) combinations for the New Zealand pasture‐based livestock industries. However, the trends in key traits and the potential economic value being added to farm systems have not previously been addressed systematically. Rates of gain in yield, nutritive value, phenological and morphological traits, and the economic value of those traits, were estimated among and within ryegrass functional groups (heading date, ploidy) traded commercially between 1973 and 2012. Whole pasture dry matter yield improvements of c. 80 and 60 kg DM/ha per year were identified in in late‐season heading diploids and tetraploids respectively. Trends in metabolisable energy were negative within functional groups, but positive when all cultivar‐endophyte combinations were included in the analysis due to the addition of tetraploids and late‐season heading diploids from the mid‐1990s. The estimated trend in overall economic value (all cultivar‐endophyte combinations included) was $7/ha per year based on DM yield only, about half the rate of gain previously estimated using small‐plot merit testing data. The trend increased to $15/ha per year when ME was included due to the emergence of commercial tetraploids from the early 2000s onwards. Estimated economic gains were high within late‐season heading diploids and tetraploids but not mid‐season diploids. These trends suggest that, if high performing cultivar‐endophyte combinations had been adopted in New Zealand dairy systems, then pasture utilization should have increased by ~1 t DM/ha above the current industry average. In the low fertility acid soils of the Orinoquian savannas of Colombia, Urochloa humidicola cv. Tully or Humidicola is one of the most widely planted tropical forage grasses for improving livestock productivity. Low nutritional quality of this grass limits sustainable livestock production in this region. In this study, we conducted a phenotypic evaluation under field and greenhouse conditions of one of the first hybrid populations of U. humidicola generated from the forage breeding program of CIAT. Our objective was to identify a set of new hybrids of U. humidicola that combine improved productivity and nutritional quality plus the biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) trait/ability to reduce nitrogen (N) losses via leaching and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. To this end, we tested 118 hybrids (planted in pots) in the greenhouse for over 6 months and measured potential nitrification rates (NR) using soil microcosm incubation. NR values observed ranged from 0.27 to 5.75 mg N‐NO3− kg soil−1 day−1. Later, 12 hybrids with different levels of NR were selected and field‐tested in the Orinoquia region over a 4 years period (2013–2017) for dry matter production, nutrition quality (crude protein, in vitro digestibility and fibres content) and NR in each year. In the rainy season of 2018, two hybrids with superior agronomic performance and contrasting field level NR (Uh08/1149 and 0450) were subjected to analysis of soil‐borne N2O emissions after fertilization during 13 days. The NR values recorded were not directly correlated with the forage quality parameters evaluated, however, the two grasses with the lowest NR values were among those with the highest biomass production, crude protein content, and N uptake. The grass hybrid Uh08/1149 and the germplasm accession CIAT 16888 were found as materials with superior forage value, with production of 14.1 and 14.6 tons dry matter ha−1 year−1 (up to 8% higher than the cv. Tully), crude protein of 11.5 and 9.1% per cut (up to 20% higher than the cv. Tully), and N uptake of 31.6 and 25.7 kg N ha−1 cut−1 (up to 30% higher than the cv. Tully). As the earth's climate changes, the ability of breeders to select for traits within forage species that impart adaptability to these changes will be critical for the maintenance of grassland agricultural systems. Temperate ‐ tropical climate transition zones (between 27 and 31° N and S latitude) have proven to be ideal zones for breeding species with variable climate adaptation. Programs located in these regions have the advantage of exposure to alternating extreme warm and cold temperatures, drought and flood conditions, and a multitude of biotic pests including fungi, viruses, insects and nematodes. In this paper we will present examples of how forage breeding programs in north‐central Florida have capitalized on these distinct advantages for selection of cultivars with resiliency to changing climate variables. Breeding programs in red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) will be discussed as examples for moving cool season species into warmer climates. Species attributes that contribute to climate resiliency will be identified and described. The ability to identify small changes in genetic photoperiod responses in these regions, are illustrated as an advantage when the objective is development of earlier or later maturity. Transition zones also provide suitable environments for biotic stresses, from both tropical and temperate areas, including fungal diseases, nematodes, and insects, offering desirable field environments for screening and genetic improvement. The Urochloa spp. breeding program at EMBRAPA‐Brazil targets the development of apomictic hybrids to improve animal performance, while reducing the environmental impact of livestock. In summary, breeders perform multiple crosses between apomictic and sexual parents, and screen progeny to perform selections for agronomic and nutritional traits across several harvests, years and locations. Thus, choosing the right parents and the cross combinations is crucial for the success of the breeding program. The objectives of this study were to: (i) estimate the general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability, and contribution of additive and nonadditive effects, from a partial diallel cross design between three apomictic and ten sexual parents, for agronomical and nutritional traits in Urochloa spp.; (ii) assess genetic gain for all traits by selecting for yield of high nutritional value leaf mass (NLM); (iii) characterize the genotype profiles using genotype by yield*trait (GYT) biplot analysis. A total of 1380 interspecific hybrids from 29 full‐sib progenies were evaluated and then the hybrid selection was performed based on studentized best linear unbiased prediction of NLM. The 10% top‐performing hybrids were used in the GYT analysis using NLM as the basic variable. There was a predominance of nonadditive effects on the phenotypic expression of agronomic and nutritional value traits. The GCA was observed only for some traits in sexual parents, whereas SCA was observed in all traits. The selection based on NLM provided favorable gains for most of the agronomic traits and GYT biplot analysis was efficient to characterize genotype profiles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forage peanut (Arachis pintoi) is considered a legume ideotype for use in mixed pastures in humid tropical regions, but its adoption has been hindered by low availability and high prices of commercial seeds. However, there is a concern if breeding of high seed‐yielding cultivars could result in loss of compatibility with grasses. This study compared the competitive ability and spreading ability of 12 forage peanut genotypes with contrasting seed‐yielding potential in mixtures with Brachiaria humidicola in northern Brazil. These genotypes were previously selected for high performance under clipping in pure stands. Twenty‐five rooted stolons of forage peanut were transplanted to the central area (1 × 1 m) of each plot (5 × 5 m) seeded 35 days before with B. humidicola. The experiment used a randomized complete block design with five replicates per genotype and was evaluated under grazing from 6 to 30 months after pasture establishment using the intermittent stocking method. All genotypes persisted and increased their proportion in botanical composition over time. Spread of forage peanut stolons into surrounding B. humidicola sward varied from 0.56 to 1.46 m/year. Cultivar BRS Mandobi had the greatest competitive ability and cultivar Belomonte the greatest spreading ability. Two genotypes (cv. BRS Mandobi and accession BRA‐00064752‐9) were selected combining high seed‐yielding and high compatibility with B. humidicola. This is evidence that both traits (compatibility with grasses and seed yield) can be simultaneously improved in this legume. A trispecific hybrid, MTP (hereafter called tripsazea), was developed from intergeneric crosses involving tetraploid Zea mays (2n = 4x = 40, genome: MMMM), tetraploid Tripsacum dactyloides (2n = 4x = 72, TTTT), and tetraploid Z. perennis (2n = 4x = 40, PPPP). On crossing maize-Tripsacum (2n = 4x = 56, MMTT) with Z. perennis, 37 progenies with varying chromosome numbers (36-74) were obtained, and a special one (i.e., tripsazea) possessing 2n = 74 chromosomes was generated. Tripsazea is perennial and expresses phenotypic characteristics affected by its progenitor parent. Flow cytometry analysis of tripsazea and its parents showed that tripsazea underwent DNA sequence elimination during allohexaploidization. Of all the chromosomes in diakinesis I, 18.42% participated in heterogenetic pairing, including 16.43% between the M- and P-genomes, 1.59% between the M- and T-genomes, and 0.39% in T- and P-genome pairing. Tripsazea is male sterile and partly female fertile. In comparison with previously synthesized trihybrids containing maize, Tripsacum and teosinte, tripsazea has a higher chromosome number, higher seed setting rate, and vegetative propagation ability of stand and stem. However, few trihybrids possess these valuable traits at the same time. The potential of tripsazea is discussed with respect to the deployment of the genetic bridge for maize improvement and forage breeding.

Assessment of the relative performance of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars, using multi-year and multi-location seasonal growth trials, is key to identification of material with specific and broad adaptation. This paper is based on a multi-year and multi-location study of 56 white clover entries comprising 14 commercial cultivars and 42 experimental synthetic lines evaluated for seasonal growth under rotational grazing across four locations in New Zealand over 4 years. The four locations (and animals grazing) were: Kerikeri (beef cattle), Aorangi (beef cattle), Ruakura (dairy cattle), Lincoln (sheep). Significant (P < 0.05) genotypic variation among the 56 entries, and genotype × year, genotype × location and genotype × season interactions, were estimated. We were able to identify cultivars and experimental synthetics with specific and broad adaptation to the three grazing management types. Cvv. AberDance, Apex, Demand, Prestige, Quartz and Riesling, with leaf size ranging from small to medium–large, showed highly above-average performance under sheep grazing. Synthetic lines 15 and 45 also had highly above-average performance under sheep grazing. Cvv. Legacy and Kopu II showed above-average performance under cattle and dairy grazing. Synthetics 15, 48, 49, 44, 22 and 18 and cv. Quartz had above-average performance under all three grazing managements. Synthetics 27, 33 and 38 had highly above-average performance across all three grazing managements and were superior to all 14 cultivars evaluated. Several of these superior synthetics are being tested across multiple grazing environments. Among the 14 cultivars evaluated, Legacy and Quartz showed superior seasonal growth performance across the three grazing managements. Quartz is being evaluated in several on-farm trials across temperate regions of the world. Fourteen white clover cultivars and 42 experimental synthetics were evaluated for seasonal growth under beef cattle, dairy cattle and sheep grazing across 4 years. Entries with specific and broad adaptation to the three grazing management types were identified. Cv. Legacy was more responsive to cattle and dairy grazing, and cv. Quartz to sheep grazing. The use of forage species adapted to the local environment allows an easier management, and greater production and stability. It also allows the conservation of the natural genetic resources, and the reduction of the costs and risks of production that further result in higher sustainability of the system. Forage quality may not be considered as important as biomass production in many forage systems. However, when forage plants constitute most or all of the ruminant diet it assumes substantially greater importance. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate the crude protein (CP) content of hybrids of P. plicatulum x P. guenoarum, in a region of Southern Brazil in the Pampa biome. The hybrids evaluated were: 10202, 1020104, 102084, 102080, 1020133, 102058, 102069 (P. plicatulum “4PT” x P. guenoarum “Azulão”), 103063, 10308, 103042, 103040, 103061, 103077, 103087, 103093, 103031, 103020, 103084, and 103037 (P. plicatulum “4PT” x P. guenoarum “Baio”). The CP analyzes were performed on the leaves of the genotypes in each harvest. The hybrid 102069 “Azulão” presented the best CP content (16.4%) compared to the other genotypes in both years. These results are encouraging for forage breeding studies with species of the genus Paspalum.

Tropical regions have great potential to meet this growing global demand, where pasturelands play a major role in supporting increased animal production. Better forage is required in consonance with improved sustainability as the planted area should not increase and larger areas cultivated with one or a few forage species should be avoided. Although, conventional tropical forage breeding has successfully released well-adapted and high-yielding cultivars over the last few decades, genetic gains from these programs have been low in view of the growing food demand worldwide. To guarantee their future impact on livestock production, breeding programs should leverage genotyping, phenotyping, and envirotyping strategies to increase genetic gains. Genomic selection (GS) and genome-wide association studies play a primary role in this process, with the advantage of increasing genetic gain due to greater selection accuracy, reduced cycle time, and increased number of individuals that can be evaluated. This strategy provides solutions to bottlenecks faced by conventional breeding methods, including long breeding cycles and difficulties to evaluate complex traits. Initial results from implementing GS in tropical forage grasses (TFGs) are promising with notable improvements over phenotypic selection alone. However, the practical impact of GS in TFG breeding programs remains unclear. The development of appropriately sized training populations is essential for the evaluation and validation of selection markers based on estimated breeding values. Large panels of single-nucleotide polymorphism markers in different tropical forage species are required for multiple application targets at a reduced cost. In this context, this review highlights the current challenges, achievements, availability, and development of genomic resources and statistical methods for the implementation of GS in TFGs. Additionally, the prediction accuracies from recent experiments and the potential to harness diversity from genebanks are discussed. Although, GS in TFGs is still incipient, the advances in genomic tools and statistical models will speed up its implementation in the foreseeable future. All TFG breeding programs should be prepared for these changes.

This strategy provides solutions to bottlenecks faced by conventional breeding methods, including long breeding cycles and difficulties to evaluate complex traits. Initial results from implementing GS in tropical forage grasses (TFGs) are promising with notable improvements over phenotypic selection alone. However, the practical impact of GS in TFG breeding programs remains unclear. The development of appropriately sized training populations is essential for the evaluation and validation of selection markers based on estimated breeding values. Large panels of single-nucleotide polymorphism markers in different tropical forage species are required for multiple application targets at a reduced cost. In this context, this review highlights the current challenges, achievements, availability, and development of genomic resources and statistical methods for the implementation of GS in TFGs. Additionally, the prediction accuracies from recent experiments and the potential to harness diversity from genebanks are discussed. Although, GS in TFGs is still incipient, the advances in genomic tools and statistical models will speed up its implementation in the foreseeable future. Fodder radish is widely used as a livestock supplement, however, the nutritional value of fodder radish under different water conditions remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to assess the chemical components and in vitro, ruminal dry matter degradability of two fodder radish genotypes (Endurance and Line 2) subjected to three irrigation regimes: well-watered (W1), moderate water stress (W2), and severe water stress (W3). The analysis revealed statistically significant effects of the main factors on the chemical composition and estimates of fodder radish leaves and tubers, particularly in terms of Crude Protein (CP) and Ether Extract (EE) across genotypes. Both Endurance and Line 2 leaves exhibited interaction effects on N, P, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and Al. Meanwhile only Na, K, Zn, and Cu were affected in tubers. Endurance tubers, specifically, displayed significantly higher (p < 0.05) CP content, with Line 2 tubers showing the highest CP content under W1. Furthermore, Endurance leaves had higher levels of Neutral Detergent Fibre, EE, and Non-Structural Carbohydrate (NSC) compared to Line 2 leaves under W1. Notable differences in tuber fibres were found, specifically in Acid Detergent Fibre for Endurance, with W3 exhibiting a higher concentration level. Both genotypes displayed higher NSC under W3. Significant variations in macro and mmicro minerals were observed between water levels in both genotypes. In terms of in vitro degradability during the 24 h and 48 h incubation periods, all treatments met the acceptable level of 60-80 %. Regardless of water regimes, both Endurance and Line 2 showed nutrient concentrations meeting the minimum requirements for optimal animal production. Though, Line 2 exhibits significantly higher nutritional value and in vitro ruminal dry matter degradability than Endurance, evident in both leaves and tubers. Notably, moderate water stress conditions yielded better nutritional quality and in vitro ruminal dry matter degradability compared to both well-watered and severe water stress treatments. Forage plant breeders often use visual scores to assess agronomic traits because of the costs associated with in-depth phenotyping in the initial stages of breeding cycles. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the number of graders on the effectiveness of indirect selection of high-yielding genotypes and determine an optimal number of graders in the early-stage trials of Urochloa ruziziensis. For that purpose, five graders assessed 2.219 U. ruziziensis genotypes in an augmented block design. Biomass production and vigor scores were evaluated in two cuts and were analyzed using a linear mixed model approach. Vigor scores were analyzed considering each grader's score and the combinations of two, three, four, and five graders. Genetic variance was significant for both traits. Visual evaluation was effective in identifying productive genotypes based on the statistical criteria. The genus Cynodon includes species that have huge potential to produce high-quality fodder, for grazing and hay production. In perennial forage breeding, selection should be performed based on repeated measurements in the same individual over time, which maximizes the selective efficiency. Thus, the objectives of this study were to estimate the coefficients of repeatability and optimal number of measures for the genetic selection of Cynodon spp. clones. We evaluated 202 clones, being five checks, during four harvests, in augmented block design. A mixed model methodology (REML/BLUP) was used to estimate the variance components and predict the genotypic values. The repeatability coefficient for plant height, green weight, dry matter, and plant vigor were equal to 0.50, 0.67, 0.25, and 0.73, respectively. The accuracies obtained by performing m repeated measures revealed that 5, 2, 13, and 2 measurements are required to attain an accuracy ≥ 90% in genetic gain from the selection for plant height, green weight, dry matter, and plant vigor, respectively. Furthermore, the efficiency of performing four measurements compared with that of performing only one measurement was 27%, 15%, 51%, and 12% for plant height, green weight, dry matter, and vigor, respectively. In addition, the additive index, adopting a 10% selection intensity, was used in simultaneous selection, leading to desirable genetic gains for plant height, green weight, and plant vigor. In this study, the chromosome number and composition of a novel perennial forage crop, 'Yucao No. 6' (Yu6), was revealed by chromosome spread and McGISH (multicolor genomic in situ hybridization) techniques to clarify its genitor origin. Cytogenetic analysis showed that Yu6, which has 56 chromosomes, is an aneuploid representing 12, 17 and 27 chromosomes from Zea mays ssp. mays L. (Zm, 2n = 2x = 20), Tripsacum dactyloides L. (Td, 2n = 4x = 72), and Z. perennis (Hitchc.) Reeves & Mangelsd. (Zp, 2n = 4x = 40), respectively. This finding indicates that Yu6 is the product of a reduced egg (n = 36 = 12Zm + 17Td + 7Zp) of MTP (a near-allohexaploid hybrid, 2n = 74 = 20Zm + 34Td + 20Zp) fertilized by a haploid sperm nucleus (n = 20Zp) of Z. perennis. Moreover, 3 translocated chromosomes consisting of the maize-genome chromosome with the segment of Z. perennis were observed. These results suggest that it is practical to develop perennial forage maize by remodeling the chromosomal architecture of MTP offspring with Z. perennis as a pollen parent. Main Conclusion: The complexes involving MYBPA2, TT2b, and TT8 proteins are the critical regulators of ANR and LAR genes to promote the biosynthesis of proanthocyanidins in the leaves of Lotus spp. The environmental impact and health of ruminants fed with forage legumes depend on the herbage's concentration and structure of proanthocyanidins (PAs). Unfortunately, the primary forage legumes (alfalfa and clover) do not contain substantial levels of PAs. No significant progress has been made to induce PAs to agronomically valuable levels in their edible organs by biotechnological approaches thus far. Building this trait requires a profound knowledge of PA regulators and their interplay in species naturally committed to accumulating these metabolites in the target organs. Against this background, we compared the shoot transcriptomes of two inter-fertile Lotus species, namely Lotus tenuis and Lotus corniculatus, polymorphic for this trait, to search for differentially expressed MYB and bHLH genes. We then tested the expression of the above-reported regulators in L. tenuis x L. corniculatus interspecific hybrids, several Lotus spp., and different L. corniculatus organs with contrasting PA levels. We identified a novel MYB activator and MYB-bHLH-based complexes that, when expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana, trans-activated the promoters of L. corniculatus anthocyanidin reductase and leucoanthocyanidin reductase 1 genes. The last are the two critical structural genes for the biosynthesis of PAs in Lotus spp. Competition between MYB activators for the transactivation of these promoters also emerged. Overall, by employing Lotus as a model genus, we refined the transcriptional network underlying PA biosynthesis in the herbage of legumes. Bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) is a forage and turf crop commonly used worldwide. The USDA bermudagrass germplasm set is composed of plant introductions (PI’s) collected around the world and contains different Cynodon species, primarily C. dactylon. The collection was screened in a replicated trial in Florida for forage yield, leaf width, nutritive value (NV), and Bermudagrass Stem Maggot (Atherigona reversura) (BSM), which is an invasive pest to the southeastern United States that damages bermudagrass fields. The goal of this research was to determine ploidy level and genome size in this USDA collection, and evaluate the influence of ploidy level in the estimation of genetic parameters for BSM, leaf width, dry matter yield, and NV traits. For chromosome counts using classical cytogenetics techniques, root tips and meristems were collected from a set of PI’s with known ploidy. The PI’s and cultivars with known chromosome counts were used as internal standards to run flow cytometry and estimate genome size of the PI’s with unknown ploidy. Ploidy level was determined for all accessions and were used to estimate genetic parameters of phenotypic traits. By providing information on ploidy levels and genetic parameters, this research will support breeding efforts and future selections for forage bermudagrass.

Perennial grass hybrids of Urochloa are evaluated for at least two years during the screening stage trials (SS) and advanced trials (AD) in breeding programs, an expensive and time-consuming process. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential for early selection of cultivars in this breeding scheme. We used multiple measurements of agronomic and nutritive value traits of Urochloa humidicola and Urochloa decumbens in the SS, and Urochloa ssp. in the AD. Repeatability coefficient, genetic correlation, selection efficiency (SE), and Spearman correlations were estimated. The results indicated that reliable early selection could be applied, decreasing the evaluation period to one year and a half for SS, and to one year for AD. These results were confirmed by high genetic and rank correlations, and overall SE above 50%. This proposed change in the breeding scheme could save considerable time, labor, and resources and accelerate the release of improved cultivars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.) is a bloat‐free, perennial forage legume adapted to the northern temperate regions of the world. This study was carried out to evaluate phenotypic variation and nutritive value of 38 sainfoin accessions from 21 different countries. A field trial was established in 2014 using a randomized complete block design with four replications near Saskatoon, Canada, with data collected in 2015 and 2016. Analysis of variance revealed significant (p < 0.05) differences among sainfoin accessions for winter survival, dry‐matter (DM) yield, regrowth per seed yield plant, 1,000‐seed weight, plant height, growth rate, spring vigour, days to flower, stem number, crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF). Dry‐matter yield of sainfoin accessions ranged from 74 to 239 g/plant, plant height ranged from 37 to 70 cm, winter survival ranged from 20% to 94%, and seed yield ranged from 5 to 64 g/plant. Sainfoin accessions from North America produced the highest DM yield. Dry‐matter yield was positively correlated with plant height (r = 0.82), stem number (r = 0.75), growth rate (r = 0.72), spring vigour (r = 0.43), regrowth (r = 0.30), 1,000‐seed weight (r = 0.29), NDF (r = 0.71) and ADF (r = 0.74). Dry‐matter yield was negatively correlated with days to flower (r = −0.57) and CP concentration (r = −0.62). Sainfoin accessions were grouped into three main groups according to their agro‐morphological traits and nutritive value. The objective of this work was to estimate genetic parameters for agronomic traits and resistance to spittlebugs in B. decumbens hybrids and to select the ones with best performance. For that, 324 hybrids were evaluated in field plots for agronomic traits and in the greenhouse for resistance to spittlebugs. Genetic variability amongst the hybrids was observed for all traits analyzed. The heritability estimates between genotypes means were higher than 0.52 for all agronomic traits and 0.98 and 0.99 for nymphal survival and nymphal period duration respectively. Hybrids with better performance than cultivar Basilisk for each individual trait were identified and also through a selection index combining all traits. Assigning weights to the different traits in the selection index did not significantly alter the rank for superior hybrids. Those were selected to continue on to the next phases of the breeding program.

The Cynodon spp. collection maintained by United States Department of Agriculture National Plant Germplasm System (USDA-NPGS) has limited information on nutritive value (NV) traits. In this study, crude protein (CP), phosphorous concentration (P), in vitro digestible organic matter (IVDOM), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were determined to (i) estimate genetic parameters for NV, (ii) obtain genetic values for the whole population across two harvests, (iii) estimate genotype by harvest interaction (GHI) for NV traits, and (iv) select accessions exhibiting improved NV traits compared to ‘Tifton 85′. The experiment was setup as a row-column design with two replicates and augmented representation of controls: Tifton 85, ‘Jiggs’, and ‘Coastal’. The whole-population was harvested twice, and data were analyzed using linear mixed models with repeated measures. In addition, a selected population of 15 genotypes were evaluated across 11 harvests to determine the extent of GHI. Genetic parameters revealed the presence of significant genetic variability, indicating potential improvements for NV through breeding. Specifically, P and IVDOM presented large variation, while NDF had lower diversity but some accessions exhibited lower NDF than Tifton 85. Low GHI, except for IVDOM, indicated genotypic stability and potential for selecting improved accessions under fewer harvests. Breeding line 240, PI-316510, and PI-3166536 presented superior NV than Tifton 85.

The objectives of this study were to detect genetic variability among genotypes of Brachiara humidicola, study the genetic diversity and identify redundant variables in the discrimination of hybrids. Fifteen genotypes were evaluated for morphological, agronomic and nutritive characteristics in a randomized block design with six replications, in Rio Branco, Acre. Analysis of variance was performed, followed by the Scott-Knott test. Different techniques of multivariate analysis were used to study genetic diversity. Significant differences in plant performance were observed for agronomic and morphological characteristics, but not for nutritive value. There was consistency between the different clustering techniques. Four redundant characteristics were identified that can be discarded. The existence of divergent and superior hybrids that can be used in recurrent selection (sexual) programs or can be released as new (apomictic) cultivars after testing for animal response was confirmed. The lack of genetic variability in bromatological traits indicates the need for differentiated selection strategies.

Knowledge about the pollen viability is important to ensure success in controlled hybridizations and, consequently, support breeding programs. The aims of this study were to evaluate the pollen viability in progenies of artificially induced tetraploid accessions of Brachiaria ruziziensis, and to verify if the position of the flower buds on the raceme affects the pollen viability rate. Staining of aborted and non-aborted pollen (Alexander’s technique) was used to determine the viability of the pollen grains. Tetraploid accessions of B. ruziziensis plants had high pollen viability (x = 76.8% to x = 99.6%). Some of these plants had viability rates similar to diploid B. ruziziensis, showing that the induction of chromosome duplication by colchicine did not result in abnormalities in production and morphology of pollen grains. Pollen grains from middle and apical regions of the raceme presented higher viability rates (x = 97.9% and x = 97.7% respectively). The viability of pollen grains in artificially induced tetraploid accessions of B. ruziziensis plants was high, which may favor obtaining fertile descendants in possible crosses

High fertilizer prices and improved environmental stewardship have increased interest in grasslegume mixed pastures. It has been hypothesized, but not validated, that the ecological combining ability between grasses and legumes can be improved by breeding specifically for mixture performance. This experiment examined the predicted efficiency of selection in a grass monoculture environment to indirectly improve tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum(Schreb.) Darbysh.) forage mass in a grass-legume mixture. Heritability, genetic and rank correlations, and selection efficiencies were estimated for forage mass in a tall fescue half-sib population grown as spaced-plants over seeded with either turf-type tall fescue (monoculture) or alfalfa (mixture). Heritability for tall fescue forage mass in monoculture ranged from 0.32 to 0.70 and were always similar or greater than those in mixture (range 0.27- 0.55) for four successive harvests and annual total. Genetic correlations between monoculture and mixture tall fescue forage mass varied with values of 0.48, 0.92, -0.31, 0.70, and 0.25 in June, July, August, October, and annual total, respectively. Indirect selection efficiencies exceeded or approached direct selection for mixtures only in July and October (1.29, and 0.73, respectively). Whereas, indirect selection efficiencies were low in June, August, and annual forage mass (0.58, -0.31, and 0.28, respectively). Moreover, low Spearman’s rank correlations (-0.03 to 0.35) indicated differing half-sib family performance between the monoculture and mixture environments. Results indicate that direct selection should be used to improve tall fescue forage mass in a grass-legume mixture, and support the hypothesis of increasing ecological combining ability by breeding for mixtures per se. Grazed pastures based on ryegrass species provide most of the feed for dairy cattle in New Zealand. There are many cultivars of perennial ( Lolium perenne), annual and Italian ( L. multiflorum), and hybrid ( L. boucheanum) ryegrasses available for dairy farmers to use in pasture renewal. This study describes an index which ranks ryegrass cultivars relative to a genetic base according to the estimated economic value (EV) of seasonal dry matter ( DM) traits. A farm system model was used to derive EVs ($ ha−1 calculated as change in operating profit divided by unit change of the trait) for additional DM produced in different seasons of the year in four regions. The EV of early spring DM was consistently high across all regions, whereas EV for late spring DM was moderate to low. Genotype × environment analysis revealed significant reranking of DM yield among ryegrass cultivars across regions. Hence, separate performance values ( PVs) were calculated for two mega-environments and then combined with the corresponding season and region EV to calculate the overall EV for twenty-three perennial ryegrass and fifteen short-term ryegrass cultivars. The difference in operating profit between the highest ranked and lowest ranked perennial ryegrass cultivar ranged from $556 ha−1 to $863 ha−1 year−1 depending on region. For short-term ryegrasses used for winter feed, the corresponding range was $394 to $478 ha−1 year−1. Using PV for DM yield, it was estimated that plant improvement in perennial ryegrass has added $12-$18 ha−1 year−1 (depending on region) operating profit on dairy farms since the mid-1960s. This experiment was carried out with the objectives of determining repeatability coefficients, the number of harvests necessary to increase accuracy and the genotypic stability of yield characteristics in Brachiaria brizantha cultivars in the northeast region of Brazil in the period from July 2009 to March 2011. The experimental design used was completely randomized with three treatments (Brachiaria brizantha var. Marandu, Xaraés and Piatã) and three replications. Each plot was harvested seven times: five in the rainy season and two in the dry season. Immediately after each harvest, the forage was weighed and dried to obtain total, stem, leaf and dead dry matter yields. For the estimation of the repeatability coefficient, analysis of variance, principal components (correlation and covariance matrices) and structural analyses were used. The repeatability coefficients (r) obtained by the different methods, for all characteristics evaluated, varied from 0.009 to 0.837. The estimates of the repeatability coefficients obtained for all characteristics evaluated by the method of analyses of variance were almost always lower than those obtained by the other methods. By the principal components method (based on the covariance matrix), the estimates were always higher than those from other methods. Considering that levels of 80 or 90% confidence are satisfactory in the evaluation of the relative superiority of the cultivars for all the evaluated characteristics, with the exception of dead matter yield, the seven harvests are sufficient for the choice of the best cultivar to be used in the northeast region of Brazil.

Conduziu-se este trabalho, com o objetivo de avaliar a produtividade de biomassa de forragem de progênies de Brachiaria ruziziensis e a estabilidade de produção ao longo de diferentes cortes, representativos de épocas favoráveis e desfavoráveis ao desenvolvimento das forrageiras. Foram avaliadas 118 progênies de B. ruziziensis, juntamente com as testemunhas B. decumbens cv. Basilisk, B. brizantha cv. Marandu, B. ruziziensis cv. Comum e Brachiaria sp., em delineamento de blocos casualisados, com duas repetições. Realizaram-se sete cortes de avaliação com intervalos médios de 60 e 90 dias nas épocas das águas (5 cortes) e das secas (2 cortes). Em cada um deles mensurou-se a altura das plantas (ALT) e as produtividades de biomassa de forragem verde (PBV) e seca (PBS). As médias dos diferentes cortes, nas épocas das águas ou das secas, foram utilizadas para a realização de análises de variância, em esquema fatorial (progênies x épocas), para a avaliação dos efeitos de estacionalidade de produção das progênies. Também foi realizada a avaliação da estabilidade das progênies. Apesar da grande concentração da PBV e PBS na época das águas, detectou-se a existência de variabilidade genética entre progênies de B. ruziziensis para ALT, PBV e PBS, tanto na época das águas como na seca. Alguns materiais avaliados apresentaram estabilidades de produção superiores às principais cultivares comerciais de Brachiaria, indicando ser possível a identificação e seleção de materiais de B. ruziziensis com médias mais elevadas e com produção mais estável ao longo do ano.The objective of this study was to evaluate the forage biomass productivity of Brachiaria ruziziensis progenies and yield stability over different cuts, representing favorable and unfavorable periods of forage development. 118 progenies of B. ruziziensis and the controls B. decumbens cv. Basilisk, B. brizantha cv. Marandu, B. ruziziensis cv. Common and Brachiaria sp. were evaluated using a randomized block design with two replicates. There were seven cuts assessment with an average interval of 60 and 90 days in water (5 cuts) and dry (2 cuts) seasons. In each cut, plants height (ALT) and dry (PBS) and green (PBV) biomass forage yield were measured. The averages of the different cuts made in dry or water seasons were used to perform statistical analysis in a factorial (progeny x times) for the effects of progeny production seasonality. The stability analysis also was performed. Despite the large concentration of PBV and PBS in the rainy season, the existence of genetic variability between progenies of B. ruziziensis for ALT, PBV and PBS were observed in both rainy and dry seasons. Some evaluated materials showed production stabilities higher than commercial cultivars of Brachiaria indicating the possibility of identification and selection of B. ruziziensis material with higher average and stable production over the year.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a repetibilidade de características agronômicas e determinar a quantidade adequada de cortes para seleção de Urochloa ruziziensis. Foram avaliadas 118 progênies de meio-irmãos de U. ruziziensis, além das cultivares Basilisk (U. decumbens), Marandu (U. brizantha), Comum (U. ruziziensis) e um acesso de Urochloa sp. como testemunhas. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com duas repetições, parcelas de uma linha com 3,0 m e espaçamento de 1,0x0,5 m. Foram realizados sete cortes, em intervalos médios de 60 e 90 dias, nas épocas chuvosas e secas, respectivamente. Avaliaram-se: altura de planta, massa de matéria seca (MS), massa de matéria verde (MV) e percentagem de matéria seca (PMS). A repetibilidade foi estimada pelos seguintes métodos: análise de variância; componentes principais, pela matriz de covariâncias e pela matriz de correlações; e análise estrutural pela matriz de correlações. As estimativas de repetibilidade variaram de 0,31-0,38 para altura de plantas, 0,31-0,43 para MV, 0,16-0,50 para PMS, e 0,23-0,43 para MS; com coeficientes de determinação entre 57-87%. O número de cortes necessários para estimar o valor real das características variou entre 7-8 para MV e altura de plantas, e 10-14 para MS e PMS, com coeficientes de determinação igual ou superior a 80%.The objective of this work was to estimate the repeatability of agronomic traits and to determine the appropriate number of cuts for selectig Urochloa ruziziensis. One hundred and eighteen progenies of half-sib U. ruziziensis and four checks, the cultivars Basilisk (U. decumbens), Marandu (U. brizantha), Comum (U. ruziziensis) and one access Urochloa sp. were evaluated. A randomized complete block with two replications and plots in a 3.0-m line with 1.0x0.5-m spacing was used. Seven cuts were made at intervals of 60 and 90 days in wet and dry seasons, respectively. The evaluated characteristics were: plant height, dry matter weight (DM), fresh matter weight (FM) and percentage of dry matter (PDM). The repeatability was estimated by analysis of variance, principal components of the covariance matrix and of the correlation matrix, and structural analysis using the correlation matrix. Repeatability estimates varied from 0.31-0.38 for plant height, 0.31-0.43 for FM, 0.16-0.50 for PDM and 0.23-0.43 for DM, with coefficients of determination between 57-87%. The number of cuts necessary to assess the actual value of the characteristics ranged between 7-8 cuts for FM and plant height, and 10-14 for DM and PDM, with coefficients of determination greater than 80%.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever o processo de embriogênese somática em Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu (Syn. Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu) e fornecer subsídios para o aprimoramento dos métodos de cultura de tecidos e transformação genética. Calos embriogênicos foram obtidos por indução em embriões isolados de sementes maduras, e cultivados in vitro, em meio de cultura que continha ácido 2,4-diclorofenoxiacético, 6-benzilaminopurina e caseína hidrolisada. Plântulas foram regeneradas a partir dos calos embriogênicos, na presença de ácido naftalenoacético e cinetina. Esse processo foi descrito morfologicamente por observações em microscopia de luz de secções seriadas semifinas de tecidos fixados, ao longo do processo de regeneração, em FAA [formaldeído (40%): ácido acético glacial: etanol (50%), a 5:5:90 v/v/v]. Os embriões das sementes de U. brizantha cv. Marandu não têm epiblasto e são classificados como do tipo panicoide. Nas condições estabelecidas de cultura in vitro, calos embriogênicos e embriões somáticos de U. brizantha cv. Marandu, desenvolvem-se a partir de células meristemáticas do escutelo.The objective of this work was to describe the process of somatic embryogenesis in Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu (Syn. Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu) and to provide support for the improvement of tissue culture and genetic transformation methods. Embryogenic calli were obtained by induction in embryos isolated from mature seeds, and cultivated in vitro in culture medium containing 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 6-benzylaminopurine and hydrolyzed casein. Plantlets were regenerated from the embryogenic calli in the presence of naphthaleneacetic acid and kinetin. This process was described by morphological observations of serial semithin sections of tissues fixed along the regeneration process in FAA (40% formaldehyde: acetic acid: 50% ethanol, at 5:5:90 v/v/v), using light microscopy. Seed embryos of U. brizantha cv. Marandu do not have epiblast and are classified as Panicum-type. Under in vitro culture conditions, embryogenic calli and somatic embryos of U. brizantha cv. Marandu develop from meristematic cells of the scutellum.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance of B. ruziziensis clones to the spittlebug species Deoisschach and Mahanarva spectabilis. Together with the cultivar Marandu (B. brizantha) and the progenies 77s, 85s and 106sas controls, 71 B. ruziziensis clones were evaluated in a randomized block design. Six spittlebug eggs about to hatch wereartificially infested and 40 days later evaluated for the percentage of surviving nymphs and plant damage based on a ratingscale. Analysis of variance identified significant differences for nymph survival and plant damage of both spittlebug species.Since nymph survival and damage scores of the clones 100, 95, 19, 42, 93, 4, 92, 47, 26, 63, and 58 were similar to Marandu,these can be considered resistant to insect pests. These results, besides demonstrating the existence of genetic variability fora possible selection, offer hope for an identification of B. ruziziensis spittlebug-resistant genotypes.

Objetivou-se avaliar o uso de descritores morfológicos na caracterização e seleção de genótipos de capim-elefante (Pennisetum sp.) de porte baixo e determinar a herdabilidade dos caracteres avaliados. Foram utilizados nove clones de capim-elefante de porte baixo (Taiwan A.146 - 2.14, Taiwan A.146 - 2.27, Taiwan A.146 - 2.37, Taiwan A.146 - 2.114, Merker México - 6.2, Merker México - 6.5, Merker México - 6.31, cv. Mott e CNPGL92F198.7) em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso com três repetições. Os descritores morfológicos foram aplicados a cada 60 dias, após os cinco cortes de uniformização, realizados em intervalos de 60 dias, a 10 cm do nível do solo. Os clones de capim-elefante de porte baixo com maior altura foram os que apresentaram maior desejabilidade agronômica, portanto, esta característica deve ser considerada no momento da seleção. A estimativa da herdabilidade foi alta para todos os caracteres avaliados em capim-elefante de porte baixo, com valores que variaram entre 100% para cor da nervura central e 66% para cerosidade da bainha. O clone Taiwan A.146 - 2.37 foi semelhante ao cultivar Mott. Os valores de herdabilidade indicaram variabilidade genética entre os clones, detectada aos 60 dias de idade. Alguns descritores morfológicos aplicados permitem caracterizar os genótipos avaliados. Os clones Taiwan A. 146-2.27, Taiwan A. 146-2.37, Taiwan A. 146-2.114 e Merker México 6.31 apresentam maior altura e maior intensidade de perfilhamento total, além de maior desejabilidade, portanto maior potencial para utilização sob corte.The experiment was carried out with the objectives to evaluate the use of morphologic descriptor in the characterization and selection of dwarf elephant grass genotypes, and to evaluate the heritability of the evaluated traits. Nine dwarf elephant grass clones were used (Taiwan A.146 - 2.14, Taiwan A.146 - 2.27, Taiwan A.146 - 2.37, Taiwan A.146 - 2.114, Merker México - 6.2, Merker México - 6.5, Merker México - 6.31, cv. Mott, and CNPGL92F198.7) was allotted to a randomized complete block design was used with three replications. The morphologic descriptors were applied every 60 days after the staging cut. A total of five cuts were performed at 60-day intervals using a height of 10 cm from ground level. Among the evaluated dwarf elephant grass clones the tallest ones were more desirable, and this trait should be considered at the moment of selection. Heritability estimate was high for all evaluated traits of dwarf elephant grass, varying from 66% for sheath wax to 100% for mid-rib color. The Taiwan A.146 - 2.37 clone was similar to the Mott cultivar. Heritability values showed genetic variability among clones, detected at 60 days regrowth. Some of the used morphologic descriptors allowed characterization of the evaluated genotypes. The clones Taiwan A. 146-2.27, Taiwan A. 146-2.37, Taiwan A. 146-2.114, and Merker México 6.31 were the tallest and showed greater total tillering intensity, and were more desirable, presenting greater potential for use under cutting.

O capim-elefante é uma das gramíneas de maior potencial para produção de leite e carne a pasto. Entretanto, a forma de multiplicação por estacas dificulta a sua maior expansão. O cruzamento interespecífico envolvendo o milheto visa, entre outras coisas, o aumento do tamanho das sementes facilitando a sua propagação. Objetivou-se no presente trabalho, verificar o potencial de germinação de sementes em diferentes progênies de capim-elefante hexaplóide para confirmação da viabilidade de propagação dessa forrageira, por meio de sementes. O experimento foi conduzido na Embrapa Gado de Leite e foram avaliadas 78 progênies de meio-irmãos de capim-elefante hexaplóide. Empregou-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados, com três repetições e parcelas de 100 sementes. Em cada parcela foram realizadas três contagens do número de sementes germinadas, em intervalos de sete dias, para obtenção da porcentagem de germinação das sementes. Observaram-se diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos evidenciando a existência de variabilidade no potencial de multiplicação por sementes das progênies de meio-irmãos de capim-elefante hexaplóide. A amplitude de variação para a porcentagem de germinação das sementes foi de 48,67%. As médias das progênies foram divididas em seis grupos pelo teste de Scott-Knott e as progênies 64, 53, 19, 62, 2, 45, 72, 10 e 77 apresentaram melhor desempenho, com germinação das sementes superior a 35%.Elephant grass is a grass with one of the highest potential for milk and beef production under grazing conditions. However, its utilization is limited due to the dissemination method that uses stems for pasture formation. The interespecific cross with pearl-millet, aims to obtain seeds of bigger size to facilitate the propagation of elephant grass. The objective of this paper was to verify the germination potential of different progenies of elephant grass hexaploid seeds to confirm the viability of this dissemination method. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Gado de Leite, evaluating 78 half-sib progenies of hexaploid elephant grass in a complete randomized block design with three replications and 100 seeds per experimental unit. Three counting of germinated seeds were done in each experimental unit every seven days. Significant differences were observed between progenies showing the existence of variability in the potential for the dissemination when using seeds originated from half-sib progenies of hexaploid elephant grass. The range of variation for seed germination was 48,67%. The progenies were divided into six groups by the Scott-Knott test and the progenies 64, 53, 19, 2, 45, 72, 10 and 77 presented the best germination rate, with values above 35%.

This paper compares the efficiency of Brachiaria hybrid clone selection by either traditional analysis or aposteriori blocking, to adequately consider the effect of lower competition in the border rows of the experimental plots (bordereffect). Results demonstrated that a posteriori blocking improved selection and the reliability of the genotypic evaluation. Ofthe ten best clones, four did not coincide in the two approaches. The ranking was altered as well, which demonstrated that theindication of the five best clones, selected to proceed to pasture trials based on the traditional evaluation, was misleading.This paper confirms the usefulness of a posteriori blocking. Furthermore, the results revealed the need to impose moreeffective competition on plants in the border rows to avoid erroneous selection when conducting evaluations for agronomicperformance in Brachiaria trials.

Acroceras macrum is a warm-season grass used for pastures, and it has high nutritive value. The scarce genetic and reproductive information about this grass is limiting its breeding for forage. The objective of this research was to determine the number of genotypes and cytotypes present in a collection established in Argentina, and to estimate the diversity of this species based on molecular markers, and morphological and agronomic characteristics. The number of genotypes among forty-seven accessions was determined using ISSR markers. The identified genotypes were further characterized for ploidy levels. In addition, the genetic distances among them were estimated with ISSR markers. They were also propagated and planted into the field following a randomized complete block design with four replications, and a group of sixteen morphological and agronomic variables were evaluated. A total of twenty-seven genotypes were identified in this collection; twenty-two genotypes were tetraploid (2 n = 4 x = 36) and five were hexaploid (2 n = 6 x = 54). These two cytotypes were found clearly separated by both genetic and phenotypic characteristics. Above-ground biomass, internode length, initial growth and number of spikelets per inflorescence were the most variable traits. The high diversity present in this collection will allow for the initiation of a breeding programme for A. macrum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this work was to estimate genetic parameters for agronomic traits and resistance to spittlebugs in B. decumbens hybrids and to select the ones with best performance. For that, 324 hybrids were evaluated in field plots for agronomic traits and in the greenhouse for resistance to spittlebugs. Genetic variability amongst the hybrids was observed for all traits analyzed. The heritability estimates between genotypes means were higher than 0.52 for all agronomic traits and 0.98 and 0.99 for nymphal survival and nymphal period duration respectively. Hybrids with better performance than cultivar Basilisk for each individual trait were identified and also through a selection index combining all traits. Assigning weights to the different traits in the selection index did not significantly alter the rank for superior hybrids.
