1. A Double-Edged Sword? The Role of Digital Technologies in Marriage and Divorce Among Syrian Refugees in Northern Jordan

This paper explores how young Syrian refugees in Jordan who have grown up using information and new communication technologies are using the internet as a private space where emotions and practices regarding intimate and marital life are expressed. We explore how new technologies and social media are influencing refugees' perceptions and experiences of marriage and divorce during displacement. Based on in-depth interviews with rural Syrian women from Deraa province living in northern Jordan, our research sheds light on the multi-faceted ways these women embrace emerging technologies. Furthermore, we demonstrate how technology influences gender-specific narratives and practices around marriage and divorce. Abstract

In this intervention, I make two main suggestions to humanize refugee research. First, the tendency to select 'research hot spots' as field sites--where researchers tend to approach the same interviewees and spaces--should not only be called out and avoided but battled against. Second, I suggest that refugee research should collaborate directly with other studies of social, political, and economic phenomena not in an effort to make displacement the sine qua non fordoing research but, instead, only one of the many conditions a human being can inhabit within receiving societies. Pursuing this aim will be easier when studies on forced migration do not become compartmentalized and develop in isolation from other disciplines and research groups. Premierement, la tendance a choisir des <> comme terrains de recherche--ou les chercheur.es approchent souvent les memes repondantes et les memes espaces - doit etre non seulement denoncee et evitee, mais aussi combattue. Deuxiemement, je suggere que la recherche sur les refugies devrait s'effectuer en collaboration directe avec d'autres champs d'etudes portant sur des phenomenes sociaux, politiques et economiques afin d'eviter de faire du deplacement la condition sine qua non de la recherche, mais plutot l'une des nombreuses conditions qu'un etre humain peut vivre au sein des societes d'accueil. La poursuite de cet objectif sera plus facile si les etudes sur la migration forcee ne se compartimentent pas et ne se developpent pas en vase clos par rapport aux autres disciplines et groupes de recherche. Abstract

This study investigates the circumstances that lead some countries to produce a large number of refugees and relatively few internally displaced persons (IDPs) as opposed to a large number of IDPs and relatively few refugees. The authors develop the hypothesis that refugee flows are greater in the face of state (sponsored) genocide/politicide than they are in response to other state coercion, dissident campaigns of violence, or civil wars. They also argue that countries surrounded by poor, authoritarian regimes will produce fewer refugees (relative to IDPs) than those surrounded by wealthy, democratic neighbors. A sample selection model is employed to conduct statistical analyses using data on a global sample of countries for the period from 1976 to 1995. The results support many of the authors' hypotheses and suggest that the choice-centered approach produces useful answers to new questions that other scholars have yet to ask. Abstract

In this essay, we highlight and theorize the dynamic relationship between the structural and cultural aspects of diasporic politics and its importance for communication studies. In response to the divide between structurally determined studies of diaspora and cultural studies of celebratory resistance, this essay argues that understanding the dynamic relationship between the structural forces (for example, nation-state powers, governmental forces, global economic structures) and situated cultural practices, is key in understanding the complex articulations of diasporic identity, agency, and discourses that may echo exclusivist nationalist appeals. Throughout our theory-focused discussion, we refer to two historically specific diasporic formations--the Polish and Hawaiian diasporas--as case studies to illustrate the ever-changing relationships among the structural formations and cultural practices which constitute diasporic politics.

We analyze the effects of immigration quotas on growth and welfare in a North-South version of the quality ladders growth model. Quotas in the North increase the growth rate. However, they lower the static utility level and the discounted welfare of Northern workers. Also the discounted welfare of asset owners drops. Hence, unlike in the static migration model where the representative agent in the host country benefits from immigration, in our dynamic model, the representative agent loses despite a positive growth effect.
