Abstract

"Close Call Action Log Form" ("CCALF") is the name of both a computer program and a Web-based service provided by the program for creating an enhanced database of close calls (in the colloquial sense of mishaps that were avoided by small margins) assigned to the Center Operations Directorate (COD) at Johnson Space Center. CCALF provides a single facility for on-line collaborative review of close calls. Through CCALF, managers can delegate responses to employees. CCALF utilizes a pre-existing e-mail system to notify managers that there are close calls to review, but eliminates the need for the prior practices of passing multiple e-mail messages around the COD, then collecting and consolidating them into final responses: CCALF now collects comments from all responders for incorporation into reports that it generates. Also, whereas it was previously necessary to manually calculate metrics (e.g., numbers of maintenance-work orders necessitated by close calls) for inclusion in the reports, CCALF now computes the metrics, summarizes them, and displays them in graphical form. The reports and all pertinent information used to generate the reports are logged, tracked, and retained by CCALF for historical purposes.

36. Career Education and Working with Industry.

Abstract

The author discusses a career education program for secondary level disabled students and considers the role of the community and industry in improving educational services. Among seven issues which may be covered in a career development class are self awareness, career and personal assessment, career exploration, and career placement. Other program components advocated are work adjustment counseling; a referral system; followup services; and in-house counseling for personal, educational, and vocational difficulties. A counselor's role is considered, and vocational education's contributions are examined. The second part of the paper addresses ways in which educators can better prepare students for competitive employment by using the community and business as resources. Six suggestions are made regarding approaching employers considering hiring the handicapped. Preparation and actual techniques during an initial visit with an employer are discussed. Five job placement suggestions conclude the paper. (CL)

Abstract

Introduction:The United States finds itself gripped by debilitating drug shortages, thrusting thousands of patients nationwide into a precarious limbo and making the potential delay or cancellation of essential chemotherapy treatments a reality. In June 2023, the situation escalated to encompass a staggering 309 active drug shortages, including twenty-five chemotherapeutics, two of which are carboplatin and cisplatin. Communicating the nuances of a chemotherapy drug shortage to those affected transforms into a multifaceted and delicate endeavor that demands deep-seated empathy, preparation, and understanding. Mastering strategic, patient-centered communication becomes an ethical imperative and valuable skill for all physicians, amplifying the human connection at the heart of medicine.
