The forests of the Western Ghats (WG) of India are a highly diverse ecosystem though altered over time by human interference. The Northern Western Ghats (NWG) differ in bioclimatic and geological characteristics from the rest of the Western Ghats, featuring a mix of forested and open landscapes. Human activities such as shifting cultivation, cutting, lopping, periodic fire, constructions (road and dam), and mining have further increased their fragmentation, leading to a decrease in biodiversity. While the region has been extensively investigated for its floristic diversity, quantitative ecological studies are limited. This review seeks to identify research gaps and new research directions in the forest ecology of the NWG by compiling various periodical studies carried out in the region. It covers various works on vegetation types, species diversity and composition, and forest degradation due to anthropogenic activities. We provide compiled comparative vegetation types applicable to the region. The present review also discusses works carried out on forest areas under various protection regimes, such as legally protected areas, sacred groves, and private forests, using quantitative and remote sensing tools. We believe that understanding the NWG as an entire unit using uniform methods is essential, and this review serves as an important step in achieving this. Research on forest carbon storage (FCS) is crucial for the sustainable development of human society given the context of global climate change. Previous FCS studies formed the science base of the FCS field but lacked a macrolevel knowledge summary. This study combined the scientometric mapping tool VOSviewer and multiple statistical models to conduct a comprehensive knowledge graph mining and analysis of global FCS papers (covering 101 countries, 1712 institutions, 5435 authors, and 276 journals) in the Web of Science database as of 2022, focusing on revealing the macro spatiotemporal pattern, multidimensional research status, and topic evolution process of FCS research at the global scale, so as to grasp the status of global FCS research more clearly and comprehensively, thereby facilitating the future decision-making and practice of researchers. The results showed the following: (1) In the past three decades, the number of FCS papers indicated an increasing trend, with a growth rate of 4.66/yr, particularly significant after 2010. These papers were mainly from Europe, the Americas, and Asia, while there was a huge gap between Africa, Oceania, and the above regions. (2) For the research status at the national, institutional, scholar, and journal levels, the USA, with 331 FCS papers and 18,653 total citations, was the most active and influential country in global FCS research; the United States Forest Service topped the influential ranking with 4115 citations; Grant M. Domke and Jerome Chave were the most active and influential FCS researchers globally, respectively. China's activity (237 papers) and influence (5403 citations) ranked second, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most active research institution in the world. Currently, FCS research is published in a growing number of journals, among which Forest Ecology and Management ranked first in the number of papers (154 papers) and citations (6374 citations). (3) In recent years, the keyword frequency of monitoring methods, driving factors, and reasonable management for FCS has increased rapidly, and many new related keywords have emerged, which means that researchers are not only focusing on the estimation and monitoring of FCS but also increasingly concerned about its driving mechanism and sustainable development. This study evaluates the sustainable development of forest ecosystems in Mkushi district, Zambia, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15, "Life on Land." Sustainable development aims to use natural resources responsibly to meet future needs without compromising environmental, social, and economic balance. The United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, encompassing 17 goals, including SDG 15, underscores the critical role forests play in global sustainability. Our results from remote sensing and literature reviews revealed fluctuating vegetation health in Mkushi, with the NDVI indicating periods of stress and recovery. Efforts by the government and stakeholders include beekeeping and conservation agriculture training, forest patrols, and policy implementations, covering over 121,464 hectares. However, survey results indicated persistent challenges undermining these efforts, highlighting charcoal production has been highest (46%), followed by unsustainable land use (28%), inadequate law enforcement (17%), lack of awareness (6%), and other issues (3%). This study can serve as a reference for policy-makers and regulators to make effective policies on the management of forests in a more sustainable way in Mkushi district and other regions of Zambia with similar challenges and the world at large. Our research, which has yielded unique findings, is dedicated to the study of the dynamics of the number of flora species in a forest-protected area (Mordovia State Nature Reserve, European Russia) for the period 1936-2023. During this period, there was an increase in the number of species of both native (from 525 to 695 species) and alien (from 38 to 174 species) flora. Based on the above data, we conclude that the composition of the native flora of the MSNR is more than 99% identified. In the first years of the flora inventory, about 70% of the native flora is identified. The spectrum of families of the native flora of the MSNR has changed little over time. After the first inventory, the number of families in the flora does not add up to much (78 in 1936, 87 in 2023). There is mainly an increase in the number of identified genera in already known families and species within identified genera. In the spectrum of families of alien flora there are constant changes, new genera from different families, species within genera are added. The floristic data analysis revealed that the natural flora exhibited characteristics of a forest, despite the presence of a forest-steppe zone adjacent to the southern border of the MSNR. The primary indicators of systematic structure, composition of life forms, and ranges of species of native flora collectively indicate that the Mordovia State Nature Reserve forest area is situated within the natural zone of mixed (coniferousbroadleaved) forests. A comparison of long-term data from the MSNR flora study revealed that the process of formation of the alien flora of the MSNR, its structure, and chorological groups has not been completed yet. In forest ecosystems, fires profoundly impact the habitat and seasonal dynamics of numerous Coleoptera species. The phenology of species and communities is particularly noteworthy in burned areas that were previously forest ecosystems. In 2023, research was conducted in the Mordovia State Nature Reserve on 11 burned plots in 2021 and control plots. The research employed the use of beer traps, which are baited with a combination of beer and sugar. In the second year after the fires, species from the families Nitidulidae, Cerambycidae, Scarabaeidae, and Elateridae exhibited the highest total number across all plots, accounting for 84.8% of all Coleoptera specimens collected. A single peak in the abundance of Coleoptera was observed on all plots during the month of May. The second peak in abundance during the autumn season was relatively modest in scale and was observed exclusively on unburned 2021 plots. Nitidulidae beetles appear in traps earlier than other beetles, with their number peaking in April and May. Thereafter, their number declined in June. The number of Cerambycidae and Scarabaeidae on all plots was relatively low in April but increased significantly in May and June. The peak abundance of Elateridae was observed in June, although the first individuals were recorded in April. A precipitous decline in the abundance of the species was observed in July, with only a single specimen being recorded in August. The Elateridae were observed to be particularly prevalent in burned areas where deadwood was present. There are variations in the observed differences between individual families, which are related to the location of plots, the condition of the vegetation cover, and the presence of flowering plants, deadwood, and dry trees on the plots. Declines in biodiversity and ecosystem health due to climate change are raising urgent concerns. In response, large-scale multispecies monitoring programmes are being implemented that increasingly adopt sensor-based approaches such as acoustic recording. These approaches rely heavily on ecological data science. However, developing reliable algorithms for processing sensor-based data relies heavily on labelled datasets of sufficient quality and quantity. We present a dataset of 1,575 dawn chorus soundscape recordings, 141 being fully annotated (n = 32,994 annotations) with avian, mammalian and amphibian vocalisations. The remaining recordings were included to facilitate novel research applications. These recordings are paired with 48 site-level climatic, forest structure and topographic covariates. This dataset provides a valuable resource to researchers developing acoustic classification algorithms or studying biodiversity and wildlife behaviour and its relationship to environmental gradients. The dawn chorus recordings were collected as part of a long-term Northern Spotted Owl monitoring program; this demonstrates the complementary value of harnessing existing monitoring efforts to strengthen biodiversity sampling.This dataset of dawn chorus soundscape recordings is one of the few open-access acoustic datasets annotated with non-biotic and both interspecific (across species) and intraspecific (within species) bird, mammal and amphibian sonotypes and the first that is paired with climatic, forest structure and topographical covariates extracted at recorder locations. This makes it a valuable resource for researchers studying the dawn chorus and its relationship to the environment.

The island of Newfoundland, Canada, is known as an area with high lichen species richness; however, most of this diversity is known from coastal regions where the ocean creates a maritime climate. The central part of the island has a more continental climate and is also the part of the province with the highest levels of industrial forest harvest and mining activities. For these reasons, it has not been an area considered to have high lichen diversity. Here, we show how local Mi'kmaw knowledge in collaboration with western scientific expertise facilitated a two-eyed seeing approach (Etuaptmumk) that yielded the discovery of overlooked lichen diversity in Central Newfoundland. Surveys by the authors throughout 2023 yielded collections of 175 species of lichenized, lichenicolous and allied fungi from the area known as Charlie's Place. Of these, there is a high proportion of cyanolichens (13%) and calicioids (11%), indicating high ecological value and potential old growth/ancient forest status. In addition, we report 19 new species records for the province, two of which (Chaenothecopsis vainioana and Myrionora albidula) are new records for Canada. Overall, the survey work reported here suggests that Charlie's Place should be a priority area for protection within the context of Central Newfoundland. This work also illustrates the value of research under the framework of Etuaptmumk and the benefits of combining local Indigenous and western scientific knowledge. Background: Two species of Neoperla from Guizhou Province, China, N. bituberculata Du, 2000 and N. dashahena Du, 2005 were described with brief morphological descriptions available only in Chinese and original illustrations being somewhat blurry. Recently, we examined type material of these two species and re-described them with clear colour pictures for the first time. New information: In this paper, detailed English descriptions and colour pictures of Neoperla bituberculata and N. dashahena are provided for the first time. The type locality of N. mnong Stark is from Vietnam and its geographical distribution is also discussed. Additionally, we also recorded the distribution of N. mnong Stark, 1987 in Guizhou, Hunan and Jiangxi Provinces of China for the first time and provided a geographical distribution map of this species. Background: Stag beetles are saproxylic species that are associated with deadwood in the larval stage and play an important role in forest ecosystem dynamics. In Italy, Platycerus caprea and Platycerus caraboides are two small, elusive stag beetle species, whose known distribution is often limited or referring to old records. New information: The present contribution increases the knowledge on the Italian distribution of P. caprea and P. caraboides, adding 70% more sites when compared to previously published records. Forest ecosystems are of global importance, ecologically, economically and culturally. However, despite their fundamental role in mitigating the worst effects of climate change, to date there have been surprisingly few resources devoted to defining, conserving and planning resilient forests for the future. Progress in this field of research, which requires international and interdisciplinary cooperation, collaboration and communication, was presented and discussed at the second biannual conference of the European Research Group, Evoltree (https://www.evoltree.eu). Over four days more than 140 scientists met to share developments and to discuss forest ecology, genetics, genomics and evolution with a focus on realising "Resilient Forests for the Future". From examining evolutionary dynamics and using the past to understand future responses, to evaluating breeding approaches and the sustainable use of forest genetic resources, the conference addressed critical themes with relevance to this topic. The role of genomics in conservation, investigation of biotic interactions and identifying climate resilient forests were also explored. Finally, innovative methods and approaches which promise to increase the scale and speed with which forest evolutionary research can progress were introduced and evaluated. The Evoltree network and conference series provides invaluable opportunities to share knowledge and increase collaboration on forest genetic research, the need for which has never been greater or more urgent. It is important to have reliable information on the presence/absence, population structure, and density of animals across their natural range. Detecting small organisms, however, such as the Nearctic tree trunk sheetweaver spider Drapetisca alteranda Chamberlin 1909 (Araneae: Linyphiidae), presents challenges due to its diminutive size and cryptic nature. We used a capture/recapture study to determine the detection and recapture probabilities of this spider using a standard beat sheet technique adopted for surveying tree trunks. Spiders were released on 3 different tree species that provided a range of microhabitats, including variable bark surface area and furrow depth/width. Microhabitat features played a small role in the timing of spider recapture (i.e. slower rate of recapture as furrowing increased). However, our results demonstrated 100% detection across replicate experiments and individual recapture probabilities exceeding 90% in most situations, with no significant differences in recapture observed among tree species and with respect to tree circumference. Furthermore, we show that most spiders could be recaptured within 2 sampling revolutions around the tree trunk, and there was no difference in the probability of collecting male and female spiders (although they differ markedly in size). Finally, we found no difference among brushers, supporting the idea that this method is replicable across collectors and studies. Via sheltering, decoupling and buffering mechanisms, tree canopies have the capacity to mitigate impacts of multiple global‐change drivers on below‐canopy processes and organisms in forests. As a result, canopies have an important potential as nature‐based solution. The optimal combinations of forest canopy structural attributes to jointly mitigate the impacts of multiple global‐change drivers on below‐canopy organisms and processes have received little attention to date. To help solving this research gap, here we review how forest canopies modulate the effects of four important global‐change drivers—climate warming, drought, air pollution and biological invasions—on below‐canopy conditions. Particular attention is paid to mitigating canopy attributes that can be influenced by forest management, including canopy cover, tree species composition and vertical and horizontal structure. Synthesis. We show that the potential of forest canopies to mitigate global‐change effects is highly context‐dependent and that optimal canopy‐based solutions strongly depend on the environmental context and the targeted subcanopy organisms. Hence, holistic approaches, which maximize synergies and minimize trade‐offs, are needed to optimize the solution potential of forest canopies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: As an important coniferous tree in northeast China, Pinus koraiensis not only maintains the stability of the forest ecosystem at high latitudes but also plays a crucial role in regional socioeconomic development. With the intensification of climate change in recent years, the stability of P. koraiensis habitats is constantly disturbed by external uncertain environmental factors, which greatly affects the geographical distribution of P. koraiensis. However, its geographical distribution is still unclear, which greatly hinders further understanding of the ecological process of P. koraiensis. Consequently, it is particularly important to explore the potential distribution and migration of P. koraiensis during several critical periods. Methods: Random forest (RF) was used to establish the redistribution of P. koraiensis. Results: The results showed that temperature seasonality and precipitation in the coldest quarter were the key factors limiting the current distribution of P. koraiensis. Currently, P. koraiensis is mainly distributed in the Lesser Khingan Mountains and Changbai Mountains, with a total suitable area of ~4.59 x 105 km². In the past, the historical distribution of P. koraiensis during the LIG period was basically consistent with the current distribution range, but its distribution range was more complete. In the LGM period, the suitable distribution of P. koraiensis became fragmented, especially at the connection between the Lesser Khingan Mountains and the Changbai Mountains. Under future climate scenarios, the suitable distribution of P. koraiensis is projected to increase, while the highly suitable distribution will be reduced. The dramatically worrying change is that the suitable habitats of P. koraiensis are gradually breaking and separating in the junction zone between the Lesser Khingan Mountains and Changbai Mountains, which will cause the ecological corridor to break. The shifts in the distribution centroid indicated that the P. koraiensis population will migrate northward. Discussion: However, it remains to be verified whether long-distance migration can be achieved without human assistance. Our results can provide some solutions for protection and management strategies for P. koraiensis populations and the impact of climate change, shedding light on the effectiveness of management responses. Mounting evidence suggests that reciprocal interactions between plants and the soil microbiota can be a primary force that generates key macroscopic patterns of plant communities (coexistence, dominance, and succession) in forest ecosystems. The aim of this article is to review empirical and theoretical perspectives of plant–soil feedback research in the context of forest community ecology. I first use a simple theoretical model to get insights into an array of the dynamics generated by plant–soil feedback: negative plant–soil feedback maintains plant species diversity and reduces plant growth, while positive plant–soil feedback drives plant growth of certain species and hence their dominance. I then describe how ecologists have unveiled the enormously complex plant‐microbiota interaction (i.e., the soil conditioning experiment) and review the linkage of plant–soil feedback with three key plant community patterns: (i) dominance, (ii) spatial structure and (iii) succession. I highlight one belowground plant trait (mycorrhizal type) that can mediate these linkages: arbuscular mycorrhizal species tend to exhibit negative plant–soil feedback while ectomycorrhizal species tend to exhibit positive plant–soil feedback. Although mycorrhizal plant–soil feedback potentially explains the patterns of tree diversity from local to global scales, many questions remain. Future studies should expand plant–soil feedback theory to incorporate numerous other feedback mechanisms and test how mycorrhizal types mediate the net feedback effects that could propagate to shape large‐scale forest structures and dynamics. The forest-based wellness industry, as a rapidly growing sector that integrates various business forms with extensive coverage and an extended industrial chain, is undergoing rapid development due to the increasing aging population and people’s suboptimal health conditions. As a forerunner in developing the forest-based wellness industry, Sichuan province is known for its early development, proactive efforts, diverse models, and significant impact in this industry. It has achieved certain milestones in terms of top-level design, pilot demonstration, standardized guidance, and public awareness campaigns to promote the development of this industry. Therefore, this paper utilizes Sichuan as a case study to systematically summarize and analyze the key practices made by the province in promoting the rapid development of the industry by investigating the development trajectory of the forest-based wellness industry. Additionally, it examines the development trends of this industry from the perspectives of supply, demand, and consumption. Finally, this paper proposes several measures to facilitate the high-quality development of the forest-based wellness industry. These measures encompass nurturing specialized talent in forest-based wellness, enhancing market players’ capabilities in this domain, conducting extensive research on technologies that promote this industry, actively seeking support from relevant policies, and promoting integrated development across diverse sectors. Background: We studied the occurrence of two sympatric wallabies, the red-necked pademelon (Thylogale thetis) and the red-legged pademelon (T. stigmatica) in northeastern New South Wales, Australia in relation to structural habitat attributes. At our study site, both species inhabit closed forest environments and have overlapping distributions, but T. thetis leaves the forest at night to graze adjacent grassy forest edges whereas T. stigmatica remains within the forest and browses forest vegetation. The objectives of the study were to investigate how structural attributes of two forest types, wet sclerophyll forest and rainforest, relate to the fine-scale occurrence of these two wallaby species within the forested environment. Methods: We gathered occurrence data from 48 camera trap stations divided equally between rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest. At each camera point, we also measured a range of structural habitat attributes to determine habitat affiliations for the two Thylogale species. Principal component analyses were used to describe major trends in habitat, and generalised linear models were used to describe the efficacy of the variables in predicting habitat occurrence of each species. Results: The number of occurrences of Thylogale thetis was significantly greater than occurrences of T. stigmatica, which was driven by significantly greater occurrences of T. thetis in wet sclerophyll forest. There was both spatial and temporal partitioning between the two species; there was a significant difference in the occurrences of the two species at individual cameras and T. stigmatica had a different activity schedule than T. thetis in wet sclerophyll forest, where the latter reached its greatest rate of occurrence. At a finer (camera station) scale, occurrences of T. thetis increased with proximity to roads and grassy edges and at sites that were less rocky and less steep. T. stigmatica occurrence increased in the presence of rainforest elements like vines, palms and ferns, more ground-level cover and tree-fall gaps and at sites with fewer emergent eucalypts. Conclusion: Our findings have implications for managing these pademelons and their habitats. T. thetis is a common species that was encountered more often than T. stigmatica, and it responded positively to human disturbance like roadsides and grassy edges, presumably because these areas provided good grazing opportunities. By comparison, T. stigmatica is a threatened species, and it responded to natural disturbance like tree-fall gaps where lateral cover was greater, and where rainforest food plants may be more abundant. Our results suggest, therefore, that conservation of the threatened T. stigmatica requires the preservation of intact rainforest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To achieve a sustainable development path that harmonizes ecological and economic considerations, China has advocated the "two mountains" concept: "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets". This idea posits that those who protect the environment can economically benefit by selling pristine landscapes and utilizing rich ecological resources. This paper use "the equivalence factor method" to calculate ecological benefits, introduces a technical measure—the conversion rate of ecosystem service value—and analyzes its temporal and spatial evolution from 2003 to 2020 in the operational areas of 87 state-owned forestry enterprises in Northeast China. The findings show: (1) a significant improvement in ecosystem-service quality, with its value increasing from 404.7 to 850.2 billion CNY between 2003 and 2020. The restoration of the ecological environment in China's KSFR provides a foundation for economic and social development. (2) A decrease in the economic gains derived by operators from developing protected ecosystems, with the most significant decline observed in economic benefits generated from the supply product, including timber harvesting. However, the industrial structure in KSFR shifted from being dominated by timber production to diversified development, with non-timber forest resources becoming an important part of regional economic growth. (3) Significant potential for realizing the value of ecosystem services, evidenced by an increasing trend in the conversion rates of cultural, regulatory, and supporting services. These findings underscore the effectiveness of China's natural forest protection and restoration policies in optimizing forest ecology and realizing the "two mountains" concept through appropriate market transactions and ecological compensation mechanisms. Climatic drivers alone do not adequately explain the regional variation in budburst timing in deciduous forests across Europe. Stand‐level factors, such as tree species richness, might affect budburst timing by creating different microclimates under the same site macroclimate. We assessed different phases of the spring phenology (start, midpoint, end, and overall duration of the budburst period) of four important European tree species (Betula pendula, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus robur and Tilia cordata) in monocultures and four‐species mixture stands of a common garden tree biodiversity experiment in Belgium (FORBIO) in 2021 and 2022. Microclimatic differences between the stands in terms of bud chilling, temperature forcing, and soil temperature were considerable, with four‐species mixtures being generally colder than monocultures in spring, but not in winter. In the colder spring of 2021, at the stand level, the end of the budburst period was advanced, and its overall duration shortened, in the four‐species mixtures. At species level, this response was significant for F. sylvatica. In the warmer spring of 2022, advances in spring phenology in four‐species stands were observed again in F. sylvatica and, less markedly, in B. pendula but without a general response at the stand level. Q. robur showed specific patterns with delayed budburst start in 2021 in the four‐species mixtures and very short budburst duration for all stands in 2022. Phenological differences between monocultures and four‐species mixtures were linked to microclimatic differences in light availability rather than in temperature as even comparatively colder microclimates showed an advanced phenology. Compared to weather conditions, tree species richness had a lower impact on budburst timing, but this impact can be of importance for key species like F. sylvatica and colder springs. Forest canopy height data are crucial for estimating forest carbon storage and assessing forest ecology. By utilizing satellite imagery, canopy height data obtained from airborne or spaceborne LiDAR have been expanded from footprint and plot levels to spatially continuous elevation mapping of forests. However, current research suggests that estimating forest canopy height without forest type data presents a challenge in how to effectively integrate multi-source LiDAR data and ensure the samples adequately represent various forest types for higher estimation accuracy. Therefore, this study proposes a forest canopy height estimation method that considers forest structure and integrates multi-source LiDAR data to overcome the challenge. First, a stratified sampling method based on forest structure (SSMFS) was proposed to select training samples and enhance their representativeness. Second, we combined GEDI and ATL08 data to create a multi-source spaceborne LiDAR dataset, enhancing geographic coverage and increasing canopy height samples. Third, the spaceborne LiDAR-based canopy height estimation model incorporates previously unconsidered canopy openness features and uses SSMFS to select training samples. Finally, we improved spaceborne LiDAR canopy height accuracy by creating a residual correction model that adjusts for differences between airborne scanner (ALS) and spaceborne LiDAR estimates. This study, conducted in Zhangwu County, achieved an accuracy of R2 = 0.71, MAE = 1.20 m, and RMSE = 1.71 m. These results show a 51.06% increase in R2, a 26.38% decrease in MAE, and a 24.00% decrease in RMSE compared to recent research. Native forests can support wild and domestic herbivores, but their nutritional potential of understory vascular plants is rarely explored. We analysed the composition of understory plant species and their biochemical components to reveal the nutritional potential of forest types (deciduous, evergreen, mixed) and their associated open-lands (e.g. grasslands in forestlands) in Northern Patagonia. We proposed an approach combining our data (e.g. plant composition, occurrence frequency) with bibliographic research (e.g. Scopus database) to develop our findings. Data were evaluated using descriptive statistical analyses and multivariate analyses. This study presents the nutritional values for the 20 pivotal species under examination. The results highlight the significant impact of taxonomic families on nutritional profiles, where the species that presented the most relevant occurrence frequency: the herbs T. officinale (60.4 % of total occurrence frequency-TOF) and T. repens (47.9 % TOF), the graminoid H. lanatus (58 % TOF), and the fern B. penna marina (44.4 % TOF). Multivariate analyses showed that the first two PCA axes explained 76.1 % (p = 0.001) and 10.5 % (p = 1.000) of forest type variation, with ñire forests and open-lands having the highest palatable plant coverage. Biochemical PCA axes explained 52.1 % (p = 0.024) and 22.5 % (p = 0.874) of the variation, distinguishing species by protein content and structural components. The deciduous forests exhibited the highest coverage of palatable plants, while target plants with low palatability and high coverage were predominantly found in evergreen forest types. The confirmed presence of pivotal species across forest types and open-lands underscores its nutritional potential, characterised by highly digestible dry matter, crude protein, highly digestible non-nitrogenous nutrients, and relative feed value. Considering their widespread distribution and nutritional factors, the native and non-native plants merit attention due to their pivotal nutritional potential.

Climate change will likely increase habitat loss of endemic tree species and drives forest conversion in mountainous forests. Elevation gradients provide the opportunity to predict possible consequences of such changes. While species compositions of various taxa have been investigated along elevation gradients, data on trophic changes in soil-dwelling organisms are scarce. Here, we investigated trophic changes of the Collembola communities along the northern slope of Changbai Mountain, China. We sampled Collembola in primary forests at seven elevations (800–1700 m asl). We measured individual body lengths and bulk stable isotopes on species level. We further categorized Collembola species into life forms. The community-weighted means of Δ15N and Δ13C values as well as minimum Δ15N values and isotopic uniqueness of Collembola communities increased with increasing elevation, while the range of Δ15N values decreased. Maximum and minimum of Δ13C values differed between elevations but showed no linear trend. Further, Δ15N values of Collembola species occurring across all elevations increased with elevation. Changes in Δ15N values with elevation were most pronounced in hemiedaphic species, while Δ13C values increased strongest with elevation in euedaphic species. Δ15N values increased with decreasing body size in hemiedaphic and euedaphic species. Overall, the results suggest that Collembola species functioning as primary decomposers at lower elevations shift towards functioning as secondary decomposers or even predators or scavengers at higher elevation forests. The results further indicate that access to alternative food resources depends on Collembola life form as well as body size and varies between ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mycorrhization has been an integral part of plants since colonization by the early land plants. Over decades, substantial research has highlighted its potential role in improving nutritional efficiency and growth, development and survival of crop plants. However, the focus of this review is trees. Evidence have been provided to explain ecological and physiological significance of mycorrhization in trees. Advances in recent technologies (e.g., metagenomics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, agricultural drones) may open new windows to apply this knowledge in promoting tree growth in forest ecosystems. Dual mycorrhization relationships in trees and even triple relationships among trees, mycorrhizal fungi and bacteria offer an interesting physiological system to understand how plants interact with other organisms for better survival. Besides, studies indicate additional roles of mycorrhization in learning, memorizing and communication between host trees through a common mycorrhizal network (CMN). Recent observations in trees suggest that mycorrhization may even promote tolerance to multiple abiotic (e.g., drought, salt, heavy metal stress) and biotic (e.g. fungi) stresses. Due to the extent of physiological reliance, local adaptation of trees is heavily impacted by the mycorrhizal community. This knowledge opens the possibility of a non‐GMO avenue to promote tree growth and development. Indeed, mycorrhization could impact growth of trees in nurserys and subsequent survival of the inoculated trees in field conditions. Future studies might integrate hyperspectral imaging and drone technologies to identify tree communities that are deficient in nitrogen and spray mycorrhizal spore formulations on them. Aim: Climate change challenges temperate forest trees by increasingly irregular precipitation and rising temperatures. Due to long generation cycles, trees cannot quickly adapt genetically. Hence, the persistence of tree populations in the face of ongoing climate change depends largely on phenotypic variation, that is the capability of a genotype to express variable phenotypes under different environmental conditions, known as plasticity. We aimed to quantify phenotypic variation of central Europe's naturally dominant forest tree across various intraspecific scales (individuals, mother trees (families), populations) to evaluate its potential to respond to changing climatic conditions. Location: Europe. Time Period: 2016–2019. Major Taxa Studied: European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). Methods: We conducted a fully reciprocal transplantation experiment with more than 9000 beech seeds from seven populations across a Europe‐wide gradient. We compared morphological (Specific Leaf Area), phenological (leaf unfolding) and fitness‐related (growth, survival) traits across various biological scales: within single mother trees, within populations and across different populations under the contrasting climates of the translocation sites. Results: The experiment revealed significant phenotypic variation within the offspring of each mother tree, regardless of geographic origin. Initially, seedling height growth varied among mother trees and populations, likely due to maternal effects. However, the growth performance successively aligned after the first year. In summary, we observed a consistent growth response in different beech populations to diverse environments after initial maternal effects. Main Conclusions: The study strikingly demonstrates the importance of considering intraspecific variation. Given the surprisingly broad spectrum of phenotypes each mother tree holds within its juvenile offspring, we conclude that Fagus sylvatica might have the potential for medium‐term population persistence in face of climate change, provided that this pattern persists into later life stages. Background: This study presents the first faunistic record and DNA barcoding for some Diptera species recorded from the Juniperus forest ecosystem of Balochistan, Pakistan. DNA barcoding was used to explore species diversity of Dipterans and collections carried out using a Malaise trap between December 2018 to December 2019. This process involved sequencing the 658 bp Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene. New information: Amongst the collected Diptera specimens, nine families were identified, representing 13 genera. These species include Atherigona soccata (Rondani, 1871), Atherigona varia (Schiner, 1868), Chironomus dorsalis (Meigen, 1818), Eupeodes corollae (Linnaeus, 1758), Eristalis tenax (Linnaeus, 1758), Gonia ornata (Meigen, 1826), Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826), Paragus quadrifasciatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Pollenia rudis (Fabricius, 1794), Ravinia pernix (Thompson, 1869), Sarcophaga dux (Thompson, 1869), Trupaneaamoena (Schiner, 1868) and Wohlfahrtia bella (Linnaeus, 1758). The families Syrphidae and Sarcophagidae exhibited the highest representation, each comprising three genera and three species. They were followed by the family Muscidae, which had a single genus and two species. Anthomyiidae, Chironomidae, Calliphoridae, Polleniidae, Tachinidae and Tephritidae were represented by only one genus and one species. A nique Barcode Index Number (BIN) was allotted to Tachinidae (specie i.e Gonia ornata). The results indicated that barcoding through cytochrome oxidase I is an effective approach for the accurate identification and genetic studies of Diptera species. This discovery highlights the significant diversity of this insect order in study region. Furthermore, a comprehensive list of other Diptera species remains elusive because of difficulties in distinguishing them, based on morphology and a lack of professional entomological knowledge. The Altai Mountains, located in the northwesternmost part of China, have a harsh climate and little human activity, making it an excellent location to study forest ecology undisturbed by human interference. The forest is frequently struck by lightning and experiences long-term natural fire disturbances, leading to the evolution of unique fire adaptation traits in the major conifer species. To explore the role of natural fire disturbances in the Altai Mountain forest ecosystem, we conducted a study on the fire adaptation traits of Larix sibirica, Pinus sibirica, Picea obovata, and Abies sibirica, and reconstructed the fire history of the forest area over the past 100 years. We investigated three representative forest areas with varying fire disturbance conditions and habitats in the Altai Mountains. Data on fire disturbance conditions, relative air humidity, and species composition were collected in these areas. Basal diameter to diameter at breast height, relative bark thickness, and under-crown heights were measured and counted for each of the four species, and litter, bark, and wood layers were sampled and analyzed for physicochemical properties (ash, fat, and higher heating value) for each of the four species in the plots examined. We conducted a count of the four conifer species in the forest for each fire adaptation index and analyzed the differences in fire adaptation traits among the species. Larix sibirica showed fire-tolerant traits, Pinus sibirica displayed fire-embracer traits, and Picea obovata and Abies sibirica exhibited fire-avoider traits. Through the analysis of stand composition and exposure to fire disturbance in the different forest areas, we were able to correlate the fire-adaptive strategies of the four conifers with stand characteristics under varying fire disturbances and habitats. Loharghat Forest Range, within the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, features diverse habitats like wetlands, scrublands, grasslands, tropical and deciduous forests. Chandubi, a vital tectonic wetland in the landscape, is designated as Important Bird Area (2003) and Key Biodiversity Area (2005) but remains largely unexplored. This study aims to establish a baseline database of avifaunal assemblages from the Loharghat Forest Range in Kamrup District, Assam, which includes the Mayang Reserved Forest and Barduar Reserved Forest. The forest is protected and managed by the local community. The surveys were conducted between August 2021 to June 2023. The study revealed the occurrence of a total of 224 avian species belonging to 20 orders and 58 families. The birds are further categorised on the basis of their seasonal movements, diets, and rarity in the region. Our findings indicate that the community-managed forests have a rich and diverse avifauna. The vegetation ecosystem in the southern hilly region of China (SHRC) plays a crucial role in the country's carbon reservoir. Clarifying the dynamics of net primary productivity (NPP) in this area and its response to climate factors in the context of climate change is important for national forest ecology, management, and carbon neutrality efforts. This study, based on remote sensing and meteorological data spanning the period 2001 to 2021, aims to unveil the spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation productivity and climate factors in the southern hilly region, explore interannual variation characteristics of vegetation productivity with altitude, and investigate the response characteristics of NPP to various climate factors. The results indicate that from 2001 to 2021, the annual average NPP in the southern hilly region had a significant increasing trend of 2.13 ± 0.78 g m−2 a−1. The trend of NPP varies significantly with altitude. Despite a general substantial upward trend in vegetation NPP, regions at lower elevations exhibit a faster rate of increase, suggesting a diminishing difference in the NPP of different elevation ranges. The overall rise in average temperature has positive implications for the southern hilly region, while the impact of precipitation on vegetation NPP demonstrates noticeable spatial heterogeneity. Regions in which vegetation NPP is significantly negatively correlated with precipitation are mainly concentrated in the southern areas of Guangdong, Fujian, and Jiangxi provinces. In contrast, other regions further away from the southeastern coast tend to exhibit a positive correlation. Over the past two decades, there has been an asymmetry in the diurnal temperature variation in the SHRC, with the nighttime warming rate being 1.8 times that of the daytime warming rate. The positive impact of daytime warming on NPP of vegetation is more pronounced than the impact of nighttime temperature changes. Understanding the spatiotemporal patterns of NPP in the SHRC and the characteristics of its response to climate factors contributes to enhancing our ability to protect and manage vegetation resources amidst the challenges of global climate change. The main objective of this work is to describe the structure and conservation status of the forest of Prosopis flexuosa and Prosopis chilensis around Huaco and in the adjacent basin of the Bermejo River (department of Jáchal, San Juan). Currently, this genus has changed its name to Neltuma. To this end, baseline information for the conservation and sustainable management of these little-studied native forests was generated from an inventory that took into account dasonomic parameters such as conservation status and tree form. This information is linked to a forest typology based on satellite image classifications. The results are expressed in a proposed classification of four native forest types for this locality and its surroundings. This classification includes, in addition to the characteristics of the area covered by native forest, the identification of the different uses and disturbances that have impacted it in recent decades. The binning of species into categorical and artificial functional groups has often been used in ecology to overcome data deficiencies with the expectation that these deficiencies and, therefore, groups will fade. Other influential work has argued that functional groups naturally arise in tree communities due to a diffuse competitive environment and a largely uniform abiotic environment leading to functional convergence. The pragmatic usage and biological arguments for functional groups have clear limitations that may make them dubious. The development of public functional trait repositories and future trait collection campaigns in undersampled regions will reduce some reliance on functional groups, but the conceptual framework underlying functional groups related to shade tolerance could be modified to include additional complexity relating to pest and pathogen interactions to result in more realistic and defendable insights into the generation and maintenance of tree biodiversity. Functional trait variation measured on continuous scales has helped ecologists to unravel important ecological processes. However, forest ecologists have recently moved back toward using functional groups. There are pragmatic and biological rationales for focusing on functional groups. Both of these approaches have inherent limitations including binning clearly continuous distributions, poor trait-group matching, and narrow conceptual frameworks for why groups exist and how they evolved. We believe the pragmatic use of functional groups due to data deficiencies will eventually erode. Conversely, we argue that existing conceptual frameworks for why a limited number of tree functional groups may exist is a useful, but flawed, starting point for modeling forests that can be improved through the consideration of unmeasured axes of functional variation. The study considers the issues of introduction and reintroduction of the Red Book species of checker tree in the system of decorative gardening, forest protection, and forest ecosystems. That is why the purpose of the study was to monitor the green corridors of rural and urban ecosystems of the forest-steppe zone of Ukraine, to investigate and select the best forms of checker tree in terms of morphological characteristics and physiological properties for promising areas of distribution and conservation in the form of pure and mixed plantings. The following methods were used in the research: route, field, biometric, laboratory, comparative analysis, mathematical and statistical. New forms of checker tree were introduced, studied in in situ and ex situ conditions, and selected for the prospects of their further introduction and reintroduction into the ecological network of Ukraine and conservation to activate trophic, phoric, and other types of biotic interactions in a single territorial ecosystem. Sparsely distributed biotypes of Torminalis glaberrima (Gand.) Sennikov & Kurtto f. Intermedia Kossetz were found in the zone of green corridors of rural and urban ecosystems of the forest-steppe zone of Ukraine. Some specimens of these biotypes were identified as valuable material for introduction into the system of fruit and ornamental gardening, including parks and monuments of landscape art, as well as natural monuments, protected tracts, sanctuaries and reserves of pure and mixed plantings, alleys, forest reclamation strips, etc. It was established that the elements of originality of the selected forms of checker tree - Eva, Podolianochka and Slavka - are the specificity of the crown shape, which determines the level of productivity, small and medium growth force, normal reaction to pruning (which affects the size and yield of fruits), high degree of flowering (60-80%), increased fruit size (diameter of more than 2 cm), increased fruit weight (1.8-2.1 g), increased number of fruits on the stem (≥20 units), a pleasant and harmonious taste of fruits, high quality of fruits, lack of periodicity in fruiting in nature and in culture, high xenogamy (69-75%), high yield of fruits from the plant, increased winter hardiness (7.5 pt.), high drought resistance (8 pt.) and resistance to pests, including pear leaf blister mite (7-9 pt.). The functional load of forests necessitates the activation of meliorative measures to optimize the functioning of agrolandscape complexes. These measures contribute to improving the environmental situation and advancing towards sustainable functioning of forest ecosystems. Therefore, the study of the structural and species formation of forest ecosystems is of significant scientific interest. The aim of the article was to analyse the impact of agroforestry measures on the process of forming the structure of forest ecosystems through a comprehensive examination of interrelationships. The research utilized general scientific methods, including specification, deduction, systemic analysis, synthesis, and abstraction, as well as formalization. During the study, vectors of organizing optimized systems of protective forest plantations were analysed, and environmental protection priorities for the development of agroforestry ecosystems were substantiated. Basic principles of managing the agroforestry complex based on sustainable land use were identified, including a comprehensive approach, ecologization of the process, and continuous monitoring. The study revealed current ecological consequences of irrational melioration for forest plantations, such as increased erosion processes and land resource degradation. Risks and challenges requiring preventive solutions were identified. It was proven that increasing the share of agroforestry plantations would allow optimizing the environmental situation in Ukraine, promoting the regeneration of the natural resource base, restoring landscapes, and minimizing land resource degradation processes. The article proposed key measures to optimize the environmental situation at the local level of forest ecosystems, as well as preventive measures to prevent destructive impacts, including the improvement of legal support and the implementation of strict measures of responsibility for irrational resource use. The value of the conclusions lies in their practical application for monitoring the state and the process of forming the structure of forest ecosystems under the influence of agroforestry measures. This paper reviews and discusses the main features of biological invasion by plants and the assisted migration theory referencing a critical common factor—belowground ecology. The risk of a plant becoming invasive and the potential failure of assisted migration programs depend on the presence or absence of soil microorganisms that regulate key ecosystem processes and mitigate adverse environmental conditions. This biotic interaction should be considered in the selection of sites for afforestation programs since it is as important as temperature and precipitation regarding conservation decisions, and assisted migration practices in response to climate change. Fungal species should be determined and included in climate change mitigation programs to avoid disease outbreaks and ensure the presence of beneficial mutualistic species in sites selected for assisted migration. Plants considered for assisted migration should pose a low risk of becoming invasive for having establishment difficulties per se. However, the real threat is that they may displace other species, introduce pathogens, or trigger disease outbreaks in introduction sites that nullify assisted migration efforts. The increasing temperatures and decreasing rainfall are expected to have negative e%ects on ecosystem services causing significant shrinkage or shift in forest distributions particularly in the Mediterranean basin. In this study, we aimed to determine the distribution of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica Manetti), modeling the current and potential future distributions in Morocco with Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) approach. Modeling was performed using all bioclimatic variables that show a significant relationship to the current distribution of Atlas cedar and that were specifically preferred in the literature by several similar studies. Prediction of warmer future scenarios showed that populations in the potential area would decrease by 21% for RCP 4.5 (2050), by 23% for RCP 4.5 (2070), by 35% for RCP 8.5 (2050), and 41% for RCP 8.5 (2070) and that there would be an impact in all ranges including the Cedar Biosphere Reserve in Morocco. Similarly, the Atlas cedar would lose its isolated-marginal populations in its southern and western extents. The results underline the importance of a genetic conservation program for cedar populations in Morocco. Otherwise, gene pools seem to turn extinct due to climate change. Furthermore, this study is intended to provide a starting point for continuous monitoring of Atlas cedars distributions while observing its climatic migration. Species distribution modeling generates valuable information for conservation management strategies for this endemic, rare, and threatened relict tree species. The spatial and temporal variations of radon concentration and meteorological parameters were measured in and around the Kuvempu University campus, situated in the Western Ghats of Shankaraghatta forest environment is measured by active technique using Scintillation cell and the meteorological parameters measured using Automatic Weather System (AWS. The activity concentration of radium in soil is determined by Gamma-ray spectrometer with NaI (Tl) detector. The measured data of the present study shows that the built-up environment and forest ecosystem have enhanced the natural radiation level. The variation of atmospheric radon concentration is depends on meteorological parameters, geographical and geophysical parameters. The diurnal variation shows the maximum concentrations were noticed in the early morning and minimum during afternoon. The seasonal variation shows maximum concentration during winter season and minimum during the summer season. These variations were mainly depending on meteorological parameters. The correlation between the radon concentration and the meteorological are discussed and presented in this paper. The present study was aimed to establish a base-line data of Annual effective dose equivalent (AED). Seedlings are the most critical bottleneck in plant recruitment, yet there is no practical and widely accepted definition of what a seedling is. Typically, the end of the seedling stage has been defined as the point when it stops being dependent on seed resources, or at the point of maximum growth rate. However, these definitions are of limited use for ecological studies based on field surveys. I analyzed 25 years of literature and 1766 publications to provide a first quantitative assessment of how tree and shrub seedlings are defined in forest field studies. I counted 282 unique definitions of seedlings, and I found that 24.4% of studies did not provide a clear definition. The most widely used definitions were "newly emerged" seedlings, followed by individuals less than 50 cm and less than 100 cm tall. Only 6.9% of the studies cited previous work to justify their choice. The most used definitions were generally consistent between tropical and extra-tropical studies, and between single versus multiple species studies. Three simple steps, if adopted by authors, could help to improve the clarity of what is meant by seedlings: (1) to always provide a clear definition of seedling, (2) to refer to previous studies, and (3) to adopt the most widely used definitions reported here (i.e., < 50 cm or < 100 m tall) whenever possible. Eighty one well-preserved wooden pillars were found as a result of underwater archaeological excavations of a submerged prehistoric settlement in the estuary of Ropotamo River, Black Sea. That provokes a scientific interest to identify wood materials. The longest tree-ring chronologies have been used to build floating dendrochronology series. Anatomical features of xylem showed that 34 out of the 81 studied wooden pillars belong to genus Quercus. The remaining 47 pillars belong to a species of the genera Fraxinus, Acer, Ulmus and Platanus. It has been found that 8 out of 34 oak pillars have a length of tree-ring series over 30 years. This was the reason to select them for dendrochronological studies. The length of the built floating master chronology for the oaks is 84 years. The lack of strong coherent signal between 34 single oak dendrochronological series can be explained with three different types of oak forest ecosystems, in the area of the Ropotamo River estuary. These forest ecosystems are as follows: oak high stand forests in Strandzha Mountain, oak coppice forests on the Black Sea coast plains and riparian 'Longoz' forests of Ropotamo River. The tree-ring series of these forest types have different tree-ring signatures. Based on the tree-ring analysis it can be assumed that the timber of the above-mentioned three types of oak ecosystems was used in the construction of the prehistoric settlement. Large, mapped forest research plots are important sources of data to understand spatial and temporal changes in forest communities in the context of global change. Here, we describe the data from the first three censuses of the 16-ha UC Santa Cruz Forest Ecology Research Plot, located in the Mediterranean-climate forest on the central coast of California, USA. The forest includes both mixed-evergreen forest and redwood-dominated forest and is recovering from significant logging disturbances in the early 20th century. Each woody stem with a diameter ≥ 1 cm at 1.3 m was mapped, tagged, identified, and measured, with censuses performed at ~5-year intervals. The first census included just 6 ha (previously described), and the area was then expanded to 16 ha in the second census. We describe the temporal dynamics of the forest in the original 6 ha, as well as the structure and temporal dynamics of the full 16 ha. The community includes 34 woody species, including 4 gymnosperm and 9 angiosperm tree species, 18 species of shrubs, and 3 species of lianas. The community includes eight non-native species, representing less than 0.5% of the stems. More than half the species show greater rates of mortality than recruitments, reflective of a dynamic forest community. Karst desertification (KD) is a major ecological and environmental problem threatening human survival and development in karst areas. In order to explore the research situation and development trend of KD based on forest ecology, this paper provides a systematic literature review based on the CNKI and WoS databases, which involves search, appraisal, synthesis, and analysis. We performed a statistical and visual analysis of 2955 studies acquired between 1 January 1995 and 30 June 2023, including the time distribution of the studies, hot research trends, pivotal research clusters, literature co-citations, main publishing trends, and keyword bursts. The results show the following. (1) The literature shows a fluctuating growth trend, and the research trends are divided into accumulation, development, and expansion stages. (2) The pivotal research clusters comprised three major aspects: study area and method, driving and genetic mechanisms, and control technology and models. (3) KD research forms a China-centered research network, dominated by institutions and scholars in southwestern China. (4) Future research needs to solve a series of related scientific issues and technological needs for forest ecosystem function optimization, ecological product supply capacity enhancement, ecological product value realization, ecological industry formation, and rural revitalization in KD control. ABSTRACT Most of Earth’s trees rely on critical soil nutrients that ectomycorrhizal fungi (EcMF) liberate and provide, and all of Earth’s land plants associate with bacteria that help them survive in nature. Yet, our understanding of how the presence of EcMF modifies soil bacterial communities, soil food webs, and root chemistry requires direct experimental evidence to comprehend the effects that EcMF may generate in the belowground plant microbiome. To this end, we grew Pinus muricata plants in soils that were either inoculated with EcMF and native forest bacterial communities or only native bacterial communities. We then profiled the soil bacterial communities, applied metabolomics and lipidomics, and linked omics data sets to understand how the presence of EcMF modifies belowground biogeochemistry, bacterial community structure, and their functional potential. We found that the presence of EcMF (i) enriches soil bacteria linked to enhanced plant growth in nature, (ii) alters the quantity and composition of lipid and non-lipid soil metabolites, and (iii) modifies plant root chemistry toward pathogen suppression, enzymatic conservation, and reactive oxygen species scavenging. Using this multi-omic approach, we therefore show that this widespread fungal symbiosis may be a common factor for structuring soil food webs.IMPORTANCEUnderstanding how soil microbes interact with one another and their host plant will help us combat the negative effects that climate change has on terrestrial ecosystems. Unfortunately, we lack a clear understanding of how the presence of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EcMF)—one of the most dominant soil microbial groups on Earth—shapes belowground organic resources and the composition of bacterial communities. To address this knowledge gap, we profiled lipid and non-lipid metabolites in soils and plant roots, characterized soil bacterial communities, and compared soils amended either with or without EcMF. Our results show that the presence of EcMF changes soil organic resource availability, impacts the proliferation of different bacterial communities (in terms of both type and potential function), and primes plant root chemistry for pathogen suppression and energy conservation. Our findings therefore provide much-needed insight into how two of the most dominant soil microbial groups interact with one another and with their host plant.

Background We studied the occurrence of two sympatric wallabies, the red-necked pademelon (Thylogale thetis) and the red-legged pademelon (T. stigmatica) in northeastern New South Wales, Australia in relation to structural habitat attributes. At our study site, both species inhabit closed forest environments and have overlapping distributions, but T. thetis leaves the forest at night to graze adjacent grassy forest edges whereas T. stigmatica remains within the forest and browses forest vegetation. The objectives of the study were to investigate how structural attributes of two forest types, wet sclerophyll forest and rainforest, relate to the fine-scale occurrence of these two wallaby species within the forested environment. Methods We gathered occurrence data from 48 camera trap stations divided equally between rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest. At each camera point, we also measured a range of structural habitat attributes to determine habitat affiliations for the two Thylogale species. Principal component analyses were used to describe major trends in habitat, and generalised linear models were used to describe the efficacy of the variables in predicting habitat occurrence of each species. Results The number of occurrences of Thylogale thetis was significantly greater than occurrences of T. stigmatica, which was driven by significantly greater occurrences of T. thetis in wet sclerophyll forest. There was both spatial and temporal partitioning between the two species; there was a significant difference in the occurrences of the two species at individual cameras and T. stigmatica had a different activity schedule than T. thetis in wet sclerophyll forest, where the latter reached its greatest rate of occurrence. At a finer (camera station) scale, occurrences of T. thetis increased with proximity to roads and grassy edges and at sites that were less rocky and less steep. T. stigmatica occurrence increased in the presence of rainforest elements like vines, palms and ferns, more ground-level cover and tree-fall gaps and at sites with fewer emergent eucalypts. Conclusion Our findings have implications for managing these pademelons and their habitats. T. thetis is a common species that was encountered more often than T. stigmatica, and it responded positively to human disturbance like roadsides and grassy edges, presumably because these areas provided good grazing opportunities. By comparison, T. stigmatica is a threatened species, and it responded to natural disturbance like tree-fall gaps where lateral cover was greater, and where rainforest food plants may be more abundant. Our results suggest, therefore, that conservation of the threatened T. stigmatica requires the preservation of intact rainforest.
