Context: Atomic and molecular lines in galaxies offer insights into energy budgets and feedback mechanisms. Aims: This study establishes a new framework for interpreting these lines and deducing energy budgets from observations. Methods: Atomic and molecular lines detected in a given object are assumed to result from the combination of distributions of shocks and photo-dissociation regions (PDR). Using the Paris-Durham shock code and the Meudon PDR code, emissions are computed over a wide range of parameters. Total emissions are calculated using probability distribution functions, with a defined distance metric based on observed and predicted intensity ratios. Results: We analyze the radio galaxy 3C 326 N, finding both shocks and PDRs necessary to explain the line fluxes. Viable solutions occur only at low densities ($\rm n_H < 100 cm^{-3}$), indicating emission from diffuse interstellar matter. The optimal solution involves low-velocity shocks (5-20 km/s) in PDRs illuminated by UV radiation ten times stronger than in the solar neighborhood. The H$2$ 0-0 S(0) $28 \mu$m, [CII] $158 \mu$m, and [OI] $63 \mu$m lines originate from PDRs, while other H$2$ lines mostly come from shocks. The reprocessed radiative and mechanical energies are $\rm {L_{UV} = 6.3\times10^9 L\odot}$ and $\rm {L_K = 3.9\times10^8 L_\odot}$, respectively, in agreement with 3C 326 N's infrared luminosity, and consistent with 1% of the AGN jet kinetic power dissipated in the interstellar medium. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the radiative and mechanical energy budgets of galaxies can be derived from observations of atomic and molecular lines alone. It highlights the unexpected importance of the diffuse medium for 3C 326 N. (Abridged) H2 is the most abundant molecule in the Universe. Thanks to its widely spaced energy levels, it predominantly lights up in warm gas, T > 100 K, such as shocked regions, and it is one of the key targets of JWST observations. These include shocks from protostellar outflows, all the way up to starburst galaxies and AGN. Shock models are able to simulate H2 emission. We aim to explore H2 excitation using such models, and to test over which parameter space distinct signatures are produced in H2 emission. We present simulated H2 emission using the Paris-Durham shock code over an extensive grid of 14,000 plane-parallel stationary shock models, a large subset of which are exposed to an external UV radiation field. The grid samples 6 input parameters: preshock density, shock velocity, transverse magnetic field strength, UV radiation field strength, cosmic-ray-ionization rate, and PAH abundance. Physical quantities, such as temperature, density, and width, have been extracted along with H2 integrated line intensities. The strength of the transverse magnetic field, set by the scaling factor, b, plays a key role in the excitation of H2. At low values of b (<~ 0.3, J-type shocks), H2 excitation is dominated by vibrationally excited lines; at higher values (b >~ 1, C-type shocks), rotational lines dominate the spectrum for shocks with an external radiation field comparable to (or lower than) the solar neighborhood. Shocks with b >= 1 can be spatially resolved with JWST for nearby objects. When the input kinetic energy flux increases, the excitation and integrated intensity of H2 increases similarly. An external UV field mainly serves to increase the excitation, particularly for shocks where the input radiation energy is comparable to the input kinetic energy flux. Most simulations of outflow feedback on star formation are based on the assumption that outflows are driven by a wide angle "X-wind," rather than a narrow jet. However, the arguments initially raised against pure jet-driven flows were based on steady ejection in a uniform medium, a notion that is no longer supported based on recent observations. We aim to determine whether a pulsed narrow jet launched in a density-stratified, self-gravitating core could reproduce typical molecular outflow properties, without the help of a wide-angle wind component. We performed axisymmetric hydrodynamic simulations using the MPI-AMRVAC code with optically thin radiative cooling on timescales up to 10000 yrs. Then we computed and compared the predicted properties with observational data. First, the jet-driven shell expands faster and wider through a core with steeply decreasing density than through an uniform core. Second, when blown into the same singular flattened core, a jet-driven shell has a similar width as a wide-angle wind-driven shell in the first few hundred years, but a decelerating expansion on long timescales. The flow adopts a conical shape and a base opening angle reaching up to $90\unicode{xb0}$. Third, after $\sim$ 10000 yrs, a pulsed jet-driven shell shows fitting features and a qualitative resemblance with recent observations of protostellar outflows with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), such as HH46-47 and CARMA-7. In particular, similarities are seen in the shell widths, opening angles, position-velocity diagrams, and mass-velocity distribution, with some showing a closer resemblance than in simulations based on a wide-angle "X-wind" model. The origin of the cold gas in central galaxies in groups is still a matter of debate. We present Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of 18 optically selected local Brightest Group Galaxies (BGGs) to study the kinematics and distribution of the optical emission-line gas. MUSE observations reveal a distribution of gas morphologies including ten complex networks of filaments extending up to 10 kpc to two compact (<3 kpc) and five extended (>5 kpc) disk-dominated structures. Some rotating disks show rings and elongated structures arising from the central disk. The kinematics of the stellar component is mainly rotation-dominated, which is very different from the disturbed kinematics and distribution found in the filamentary sources. The ionized gas is kinematically decoupled from the stellar component for most systems, suggesting an external origin for the gas. We also find that the Halpha luminosity correlates with the cold molecular mass. By exploring the thermodynamical properties of the hot atmospheres, we find that the filamentary sources and compact disks are found in systems with small central entropy values and tcool/teddy ratios. This suggests that, like for Brightest Cluster Galaxies in cool core clusters, the ionized gas are likely formed from hot halo gas condensations, consistently with the Chaotic Cold Accretion simulations (as shown via the C-ratio, Tat, and k-plot). We note that gaseous rotating disks are more frequent than in BCGs. An explanation for the origin of the gas in those objects is a contribution to gas fueling by mergers or group satellites, as qualitatively hinted by some sources of the present sample. Nonetheless, we discuss the possibility that some extended disks could also be a transition stage in an evolutionary sequence including filaments, extended disks and compact disks, as described by hot gas condensation models of cooling flows., Comment: 38 pages, and 16 figures. The nuclear-spin chemistry of interstellar water is investigated using the University of Grenoble Alpes Astrochemical Network (UGAN). This network includes reactions involving the different nuclear-spin states of the hydrides of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur, as well as their deuterated forms. Nuclear-spin selection rules are implemented within the scrambling hypothesis for reactions involving up to seven protons. The abundances and ortho-to-para ratios (OPRs) of gas-phase water and water ions (H$_2$O$^+$ and H$_3$O$^+$) are computed under the steady-state conditions representative of a dark molecular cloud and during the early phase of gravitational collapse of a prestellar core. The model incorporates the freezing of the molecules on to grains, simple grain surface chemistry and cosmic-ray induced and direct desorption of ices. The predicted OPRs are found to deviate significantly from both thermal and statistical values and to be independent of temperature below $\sim $30~K. The OPR of H$_2$O is shown to lie between 1.5 and 2.6, depending on the spin-state of H$_2$, in good agreement with values derived in translucent clouds with relatively high extinction. In the prestellar core collapse calculations, the OPR of H$_2$O is shown to reach the statistical value of 3 in regions with severe depletion ($n_{\rm H}> 10^7$~cm$^{-3}$). We conclude that a low water OPR ($\lesssim 2.5$) is consistent with gas-phase ion-neutral chemistry and reflects a gas with OPR(H$_2)\lesssim 1$. The abundance of volatile sulfur in dense clouds is long-standing problem in studies of the physics and chemistry of star-forming regions. Sulfur is an important species because its low ionization potential may possibly make it an important charge carrier. The observed sulfur-bearing species in the gas-phase of dense clouds represent only a minor fraction of the cosmic sulfur abundance, which has been interpreted as a signature of sulfur depletion into ices at the surface of dust grains. However, atomic sulfur, which could be the main gas-phase carrier, cannot be observed directly in cold cores. We present measurements of the nitrogen sulfide (NS) radical toward four dense cores performed with the IRAM-30m telescope. Analytical chemical considerations and chemical models over a wide parameter space show that the NS:N2H+ abundance ratio provides a direct constraint on the abundance of gas-phase atomic sulfur. Toward early-type cores, we find that $n(\rm S)/n_{\rm H}$ is close, or even equal, to the cosmic abundance of sulfur, 14$\times 10^{-6}$, demonstrating that sulfur is not depleted and is atomic, which is in agreement with chemical models. More chemically evolved cores show sulfur depletion by factors up to 100 in their densest parts. In L1544, atomic sulfur depletion is shown to increase with increasing density. Future observations are needed to discover the solid-phase carrier of sulfur. The excitation of the filamentary gas structures surrounding giant elliptical galaxies at the center of cool-core clusters, a.k.a BCGs (brightest cluster galaxies), is key to our understanding of active galactic nucleus feedback, and of the impact of environmental and local effects on star formation. We investigate the contribution of the thermal radiation from the cooling flow surrounding BCGs to the excitation of the filaments. We explore the effects of small levels of extra-heating (turbulence), and of metallicity, on the optical and infrared lines. Using the Cloudy code, we model the photoionization and photodissociation of a slab of gas of optical depth AV{\leq}30mag at constant pressure, in order to calculate self-consistently all of the gas phases, from ionized gas to molecular gas. The ionizing source is the EUV and soft X-ray radiation emitted by the cooling gas. We test these models comparing their predictions to the rich multi-wavelength observations, from optical to submillimeter. These models reproduce most of the multi-wavelength spectra observed in the nebulae surrounding the BCGs, not only the LINER-like optical diagnostics: [O iii]{\lambda} 5007 {\AA}/H\b{eta}, [N ii]{\lambda} 6583 {\AA}/H{\alpha} and ([S ii]{\lambda} 6716 {\AA}+[S ii]{\lambda} 6731 {\AA})/H{\alpha} but also the infrared emission lines from the atomic gas. The modeled ro-vib H2 lines also match observations, which indicates that near and mid-IR H2 lines are mostly excited by collisions between H2 molecules and secondary electrons produced naturally inside the cloud by the interaction between the X-rays and the cold gas in the filament. However, there is still some tension between ionized and molecular line tracers (i.e. CO), which requires to optimize the cloud structure and the density of the molecular zone., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We present Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) UV line spectroscopy and integral-field unit (IFU) observations of the intra-group medium in Stephan's Quintet (SQ). SQ hosts a 30 kpc long shocked ridge triggered by a galaxy collision at a relative velocity of 1000 km/s, where large amounts of molecular gas coexist with a hot, X-ray emitting, plasma. COS spectroscopy at five positions sampling the diverse environments of the SQ intra-group medium reveals very broad (2000 km/s) Ly$\alpha$ line emission with complex line shapes. The Ly$\alpha$ line profiles are similar to or much broader than those of H$\beta$, [CII]$\lambda157.7\mu$m and CO~(1-0) emission. The extreme breadth of the Ly$\alpha$ emission, compared with H$\beta$, implies resonance scattering within the observed structure. Scattering indicates that the neutral gas of the intra-group medium is clumpy, with a significant surface covering factor. We observe significant variations in the Ly$\alpha$/H$\beta$ flux ratio between positions and velocity components. From the mean line ratio averaged over positions and velocities, we estimate the effective escape fraction of Ly$\alpha$ photons to be 10-30%. Remarkably, over more than four orders of magnitude in temperature, the powers radiated by X-rays, Ly$\alpha$, H$_2$, [CII] are comparable within a factor of a few, assuming that the ratio of the Ly$\alpha$ to H$_2$ fluxes over the whole shocked intra-group medium stay in line with those observed at those five positions. Both shocks and mixing layers could contribute to the energy dissipation associated with a turbulent energy cascade. Shocks are ubiquitous in the interstellar and intergalactic media, where their chemical and radiative signatures reveal the physical conditions in which they arise. Detailed astrochemical models of shocks at all velocities are necessary to understand the physics of many environments including protostellar outflows, supernova remnants, and galactic outflows. We present an accurate treatment of the self-generated UV radiation in intermediate velocity, stationary, weakly magnetised, J-type, molecular shocks. Shock solutions computed with the Paris-Durham shock code are post-processed using a multi-level accelerated $\Lambda$-iteration radiative transfer algorithm to compute Ly$\alpha$, Ly$\beta$, and 2-photon continuum emission. The subsequent impacts on the ionisation and dissociation of key atomic and molecular species as well as on the heating by the photoelectric effect take the wavelength dependent cross-sections and the fluid velocity profile into account. We analyse shock models with velocities $V=25-60$ km/s, propagating in dense ($n \geq 10^4$ ${\rm cm}^{-3}$), shielded gas. Self-absorption traps Ly$\alpha$ photons in a small region in the shock, though a large fraction escapes into the line wings. We find a critical velocity $V\sim 30$ km/s above which shocks produce a Ly$\alpha$ photon flux exceeding that of the standard ISRF. The escaping photons generate a warm slab (T~100 K) ahead of the shock as well as pre-ionise C and S. These shocks are traced by bright atomic fine structure (e.g. O and S) and metastable (e.g. O and C) lines, substantive molecular emission (e.g. H2, OH, and CO), enhanced column densities of several species (e.g. CH+ and HCO+), as well as a severe destruction of H2O. As much as 13-21% of the initial kinetic energy of the shock escapes in Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ photons if the dust opacity in the radiative precursor allows it., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 16 main body pages, 8 appendices pages

Measurements of the nitrogen isotopic ratio in Solar System comets show a constant value, ~140, which is three times lower than the protosolar ratio, a highly significant difference that remains unexplained. Observations of static starless cores at early stages of collapse confirm the theoretical expectation that nitrogen fractionation in interstellar conditions is marginal for most species. Yet, observed isotopic ratios in N2H+ are at variance with model predictions. These gaps in our understanding of how the isotopic reservoirs of nitrogen evolve, from interstellar clouds to comets, and, more generally, to protosolar nebulae, may have their origin in missing processes or misconceptions in the chemistry of interstellar nitrogen. So far, theoretical studies of nitrogen fractionation in starless cores have addressed the quasi-static phase of their evolution such that the effect of dynamical collapse on the isotopic ratio is not known. In this paper, we investigate the fractionation of 14N and 15N during the gravitational collapse of a pre-stellar core through gas-phase and grain adsorption and desorption reactions. The initial chemical conditions, which are obtained in steady state after typically a few Myr, show low degrees of fractionation in the gas phase, in agreement with earlier studies. However, during collapse, the differential rate of adsorption of 14N- and 15N-containing species onto grains results in enhanced 15N:14N ratios, in better agreement with the observations. Furthermore, we find differences in the behavior, with increasing density, of the isotopic ratio in different species. The degree of coupling between the gas and the magnetic field during the collapse of a core and the subsequent formation of a disk depends on the assumed dust size distribution. We study the impact of grain-grain coagulation on the evolution of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) resistivities during the collapse of a prestellar core. We use a 1-D model to follow the evolution of the dust size distribution, out-of-equilibrium ionization state and gas chemistry during the collapse of a prestellar core. To compute the grain-grain collisional rate, we consider models for both random and systematic, size-dependent, velocities. We include grain growth through grain-grain coagulation and ice accretion, but ignore grain fragmentation. Starting with a MRN (Mathis et al. 1977) size distribution, we find that coagulation in grain-grain collisions generated by hydrodynamical turbulence is not efficient at removing the smallest grains, and as a consequence does not affect much the evolution of the Hall and ambipolar diffusion MHD resistivities which still severly drop during the collapse like in models without coagulation. The inclusion of systematic velocities, possibly induced by the presence of ambipolar diffusion, increases the coagulation rate between small and large grains, removing small grains earlier in the collapse and therefore limiting the drop in the Hall and ambipolar diffusion resistivities. At intermediate densities ($n_{\rm H} \sim 10^8\,$cm$^{-3}$), the Hall and ambipolar diffusion resistivities are found to be higher by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude in models with coagulation than in models where coagulation is ignored, and also higher than in a toy model without coagulation where all grains smaller than $0.1\,{\mu}$m would have been removed in the parent cloud before the collapse. Large millimeter interferometers are revealing a growing number of rotating outflows, which are suggested to trace magneto-centrifugal disk winds (MHD DWs). However, their impact on disk accretion is not yet well quantified. Here we identify systematic biases in retrieving the true launch zone, magnetic lever arm, and angular momentum flux of an MHD DW from apparent rotation signatures. Synthetic position-velocity cuts are constructed from self-similar MHD DWs over a broad range of parameters, and three different methods are applied for estimating the specific angular momentum. We find that the launch radius inferred using the well-known relation from Anderson et al. (2006) can markedly differ from the true outermost launch radius $r_{out}$ of the DW. The "double-peak separation" and "flow width" methods provide only a strict lower limit to $r_{out}$. This bias is independent of angular resolution and can reach a factor ten. In contrast, the "rotation curve" method gives a good estimate of $r_{out}$ when the flow is well resolved, and an upper limit otherwise. The magnetic lever arm is always underestimated. Only comparison with synthetic predictions can take into account properly all observational effects. As an application, we present a comparison with ALMA observations of HH212 at resolutions from 250 au to 16 au, which represents the most stringent observational test of MHD DW to date. This comparison confirms our predicted biases for the double-peak separation method, and the large $r_{out}\sim40~$au and small magnetic lever arm first suggested by Tabone et al. (2017). We also derive the first accurate analytical expression for the fraction of disk angular momentum extracted by an MHD disk wind of given radial extent, magnetic lever arm, and mass flux. Recent ALMA observations suggest that the highest velocity part of molecular protostellar jets are launched from the dust-sublimation regions of the accretion disks (<0.3 au). However, formation and survival of molecules in inner protostellar disk winds, in the presence of a harsh FUV radiation field and the absence of dust, remain unexplored. We aim at determining if simple molecules can be synthesized and spared in fast and collimated dust-free disk winds or if a fraction of dust is necessary to explain the observed molecular abundances. This work is based on the Paris-Durham shock code designed to model irradiated environments. Fundamental properties of the dust-free chemistry are investigated from single point models. A laminar 1D disk wind model is then built using a parametric flow geometry. This model includes time-dependent chemistry and the attenuation of the radiation field by gas-phase photoprocesses. We show that a small fraction of H2 (< 1e-2), primarily formed through the H- route, can efficiently initiate molecule synthesis such as CO and SiO above TK ~ 800 K. The attenuation of the radiation field by atomic species (eg. C, Si, S) proceeds through continuum self-shielding. This process ensures efficient formation of CO, OH, SiO, H2O through neutral-neutral reactions, and the survival of these molecules. Class 0 dust-free winds with high mass-loss rates ($\dot{M}_w >$ 2e-6 Msun/yr) are predicted to be rich in molecules if warm (TK > 800 K). The molecular content of disk winds is very sensitive to the presence of dust and a mass-fraction of surviving dust as small as 1e-5 significantly increases the H2O and SiO abundances. Chemistry of high-velocity jets is a powerful tool to probe their content in dust and uncover their launching point. Extended filamentary H$\alpha$ emission nebulae are a striking feature of nearby galaxy clusters but the formation mechanism of the filaments, and the processes which shape their morphology remain unclear. We conduct an investigation into the formation, evolution and destruction of dense gas in the center of a simulated, Perseus-like, cluster under the influence of a spin-driven jet. We particularly study the role played by condensation of dense gas from the diffuse intracluster medium, and the impact of direct uplifting of existing dense gas by the jets, in determining the spatial distribution and kinematics of the dense gas. We present a hydrodynamical simulation of an idealised Perseus-like cluster using the adaptive mesh refinement code {\sc ramses}. Our simulation includes a supermassive black hole (SMBH) that self-consistently tracks its spin evolution via its local accretion, and in turn drives a large-scale jet whose direction is based on the black hole's spin evolution. We show that the formation and destruction of dense gas is closely linked to the SMBH's feedback cycle, and that its morphology is highly variable throughout the simulation. While extended filamentary structures readily condense from the hot intra-cluster medium, they are easily shattered into an overly clumpy distribution of gas during their interaction with the jet driven outflows. Condensation occurs predominantly onto infalling gas located 5 - 15 kpc from the center during quiescent phases of the central AGN, when the local ratio of the cooling time to free fall time falls below 20, i.e. when $t_{\rm cool}/t_{\rm ff} < 20$. We find evidence for both condensation and uplifting of dense gas, but caution that purely hydrodynamical simulations struggle to effectively regulate the cluster cooling cycle and produce overly clumpy distributions of dense gas morphologies, compared to observation., Comment: 18 pages, 17 Figures. Multi-phase filamentary structures around Brightest Cluster Galaxies are likely a key step of AGN-feedback. We observed molecular gas in 3 cool cluster cores: Centaurus, Abell S1101, and RXJ1539.5 and gathered ALMA and MUSE data for 12 other clusters. Those observations show clumpy, massive and long, 3--25 kpc, molecular filaments, preferentially located around the radio bubbles inflated by the AGN (Active Galactic Nucleus). Two objects show nuclear molecular disks. The optical nebula is certainly tracing the warm envelopes of cold molecular filaments. Surprisingly, the radial profile of the H$\alpha$/CO flux ratio is roughly constant for most of the objects, suggesting that (i) between 1.2 to 7 times more cold gas could be present and (ii) local processes must be responsible for the excitation. Projected velocities are between 100--400 km s$^{-1}$, with disturbed kinematics and sometimes coherent gradients. This is likely due to the mixing in projection of several thin unresolved filaments. The velocity fields may be stirred by turbulence induced by bubbles, jets or merger-induced sloshing. Velocity and dispersions are low, below the escape velocity. Cold clouds should eventually fall back and fuel the AGN. We compare the filament's radial extent, r$_{fil}$, with the region where the X-ray gas can become thermally unstable. The filaments are always inside the low-entropy and short cooling time region, where t$_{cool}$/t$_{ff}$<20 (9 of 13 sources). The range t$_{cool}$/t$_{ff}$, 8-23 at r$_{fil}$, is likely due to (i) a more complex gravitational potential affecting the free-fall time (e.g., sloshing, mergers); (ii) the presence of inhomogeneities or uplifted gas in the ICM, affecting the cooling time. For some of the sources, r$_{fil}$ lies where the ratio of the cooling time to the eddy-turnover time, t$_{cool}$/t$_{eddy}$, is approximately unity., Comment: 33 Pages, 17 Figures, submitted to A&A

The HH 212 protostellar system, in Orion B, has been mapped thanks to ALMA-Band 7 Cycle 1 and Cycle 4 observations of dueterated water (HDO) and acetaldehyde (CH$_3$CHO) emission with an angular resolution down to $\sim$0.15 arcsec (60 au). Many emission lines due to 14 CH$_3$CHO and 1 HDO transitions at high excitation ($E_{\rm u}$ between 163 K and 335 K) have been imaged in the inner $\sim$ 70 au region. The local thermal equilibrium analysis of the CH$_3$CHO emission leads to a temperature of 78$\pm$14 K and a column density of 7.6$\pm$3.2 $\times$ 10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$, which, when $N_{\rm H_2}$ of 10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ is assumed, leads to an abundance of $X_{\rm CH_3CHO}$ $\simeq$ 8 $\times$ 10$^{-9}$. The large velocity gradient analysis of the HDO emission also places severe constraints on the volume density, n$_{\rm H_2}$ $\geq$ 10$^8$ cm$^{-3}$. The line profiles are 5--7 km s$^{-1}$ wide, and CH$_3$CHO and HDO both show a $\pm$ 2 km s$^{-1}$ velocity gradient over a size of $\sim$ 70 au (blue-shifted emission towards the north-west and red-shifted emission towards the south-east) along the disc equatorial plane, in agreement with what was found so far using other molecular tracers. The kinematics of CH$_3$CHO and HDO are consistent with the occurrence of a centrifugal barrier, that is, the infalling envelope-rotating disc ring, which is chemically enriched through low-velocity accretion shocks. The emission radius is $\sim$ 60 au, in good agreement with what was found before for another interstellar complex organic molecule such as NH$_2$CHO. We support a vertical structure for the centrifugal barrier, suggesting the occurrence of two outflowing, expanding, and rotating rings above and below (of about 40-45 au) the optically thick equatorial disc plane. Using the PACS and SPIRE spectrometers on-board Herschel, we obtained observations of the Taffy galaxies (UGC 12914/12915) and bridge. The Taffy system is believed to be the result of a face-on collision between two gas-rich galaxies, in which the stellar disks passed through each other, but the gas was dispersed into a massive H I and molecular bridge between them. Emission is detected and mapped in both galaxies and the bridge in the [C II]157.7 $\mu$m and [O I]63.2 $\mu$m fine-structure lines. Additionally, SPIRE FTS spectroscopy detects the [C I] $^3$P$_2$$\rightarrow$$^3$P$_1$(809.3 GHz) and [C I] $^3$P$_1$$\rightarrow$$3$P$_0$(492.2 GHz) neutral carbon lines, and weakly detects high-J CO transitions in the bridge. These results indicate that the bridge is composed of a warm multi-phase medium consistent with shock and turbulent heating. Despite low star formation rates in the bridge, the [C II] emission appears to be enhanced, reaching [C II]/FIR ratios of 3.3% in parts of the bridge. Both the [C II] and [O I] lines show broad intrinsic multi-component profiles, similar to those seen in previous CO 1-0 and H I observations. The [C II] emission shares similar line profiles with both the double-peaked H I profiles and shares a high-velocity component with single-peaked CO profiles in the bridge, suggesting that the [C II] emission originates in both the neutral and molecular phases. We show that it is feasible that a combination of turbulently heated H$_2$ and high column-density H I, resulting from the galaxy collision, is responsible for the enhanced [C II] emission., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication by ApJ

The molecular richness of fast protostellar jets within 20-100 au of their source, despite strong ultraviolet irradiation, remains a challenge for the models investigated so far. We aim to investigate the effect of interaction between a time-variable jet and a surrounding steady disk wind, to assess the possibility of jet chemical enrichement by the wind, and the characteristic signatures of such a configuration. We have constructed an analytic model of a jet bow shock driven into a surrounding slower disk wind in the thin shell approximation. The refilling of the post bow shock cavity from below by the disk wind is also studied. An extension of the model to the case of two or more successive internal working surfaces (IWS) is made. We then compared this analytic model with numerical simulations with and without a surrounding disk wind. We find that at early times (of order the variability period), jet bow shocks travel in refilled pristine disk-wind material, before interacting with the cocoon of older bow shocks. This opens the possibility of bow shock chemical enrichment (if the disk wind is molecular and dusty) and of probing the unperturbed disk wind structure near the jet base. Several distinctive signatures of the presence of a surrounding disk wind are identified, in the bow shock morphology and kinematics. Numerical simulations validate our analytical approach and further show that at large scale, the passage of many jet IWS inside a disk wind produces a stationary V-shaped cavity, closing down onto the axis at a finite distance from the source., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. We wish to constrain the possible contribution of a magnetohydrodynamic disk wind (DW) to the HH212 molecular jet. We mapped the flow base with ALMA Cycle 4 at 0.13"$\sim$ 60 au resolution and compared these observations with synthetic DW predictions. We identified, in SO/SO$_2$, a rotating flow that is wider and slower than the axial SiO jet. The broad outflow cavity seen in C$^{34}$S is not carved by a fast wide-angle wind but by this slower agent. Rotation signatures may be fitted by a DW of a moderate lever arm launched out to $\sim$ 40 au with SiO tracing dust-free streamlines from 0.05-0.3 au. Protostellar jets and outflows are key features of the star-formation process, and primary processes of the feedback of young stars on the interstellar medium. Understanding the underlying shocks is necessary to explain how jets and outflows are launched, and to quantify their chemical and energetic impacts on the surrounding medium. We performed a high-spectral resolution study of the [OI]$_{\rm 63 \mu m}$ emission in the outflow of the intermediate-mass Class 0 protostar Cep E-mm. We present observations of the OI $^3$P$_1 \rightarrow$ $^3$P$_2$, OH between $^2\Pi_{1/2}$ $J = 3/2$ and $J = 1/2$ at 1837.8 GHz, and CO (16-15) lines with SOFIA-GREAT at three positions in the Cep E outflow: mm (the driving protostar), BI (in the southern lobe), and BII (the terminal position in the southern lobe). The CO line is detected at all three positions. The OI line is detected in BI and BII, whereas the OH line is not detected. In BII, we identify three kinematical components in OI and CO, already detected in CO: the jet, the HH377 terminal bow-shock, and the outflow cavity. The OI column density is higher in the outflow cavity than in the jet, which itself is higher than in the terminal shock. The terminal shock is where the abundance ratio of OI to CO is the lowest (about 0.2), whereas the jet component is atomic (ratio $\sim$2.7). In the jet, we compare the OI observations with shock models that successfully fit the integrated intensity of 10 CO lines: these models do not fit the OI data. The high intensity of OI emission points towards the propagation of additional dissociative or alternative FUV-irradiated shocks, where the illumination comes from the shock itself. We map for the first time the two-dimensional H_2 excitation of warm intergalactic gas in Stephan's Quintet on group-wide (50 x 35 kpc^2) scales to quantify the temperature, mass and warm-H_2 mass fraction as a function of position using Spitzer. Molecular gas temperatures are seen to rise (to T > 700K) and the slope of the power--law density-temperature relation flattens along the main ridge of the filament, defining the region of maximum heating. We also performed MHD modeling of the excitation properties of the warm gas, to map the velocity structure and energy deposition rate of slow and fast molecular shocks. Slow magnetic shocks were required to explain the power radiated from the lowest--lying rotational states of H_2, and strongly support the idea that energy cascades down to small scales and low velocities from the fast collision of NGC 7318b with group-wide gas. The highest levels of heating of the warm H_2 is strongly correlated with the large-scale stirring of the medium as measured by [CII] spectroscopy with Herschel. H_2 is also seen associated with a separate bridge which extends towards the Seyfert nucleus in NGC 7319, both from Spitzer and CARMA CO observations. This opens up the possibility that both galaxy collisions and AGN outflows can turbulently heat gas on large-scales in compact groups. We investigate whether the broad wings of H2O emission identified with Herschel towards low-mass Class 0 and Class 1 protostars may be consistent with an origin in a dusty MHD disk wind, and the constraints it would set on the underlying disk properties. We present synthetic H2O line profiles predictions for a typical MHD disk wind solution with various values of disk accretion rate, stellar mass, extension of the launching area, and view angle. We compare them in terms of line shapes and intensities with the HIFI profiles observed by the WISH Key Program. We find that a dusty MHD disk wind launched from 0.2--0.6 AU AU to 3--25 AU can reproduce to a remarkable degree the observed shapes and intensities of the broad H2O component, both in the fundamental 557 GHz line and in more excited lines. Such a model also readily reproduces the observed correlation of 557 GHz line luminosity with envelope density, if the infall rate at 1000 AU is 1--3 times the disk accretion rate in the wind ejection region. It is also compatible with the typical disk size and bolometric luminosity in the observed targets. However, the narrower line profiles in Class 1 sources suggest that MHD disk winds in these sources, if present, would have to be slower and/or less water rich than in Class 0 sources. In conclusion, MHD disk winds appear as a valid (though not unique) option to consider for the origin of the broad H2O component in low-mass protostars. The build-up of galaxies is regulated by a complex interplay between gravitational collapse, galaxy merging and feedback related to AGN and star formation. The energy released by these processes has to dissipate for gas to cool, condense, and form stars. How gas cools is thus a key to understand galaxy formation. \textit{Spitzer Space Telescope} infrared spectroscopy revealed a population of galaxies with weak star formation and unusually powerful H$_2$ line emission. This is a signature of turbulent dissipation, sustained by large-scale mechanical energy injection. The cooling of the multiphase interstellar medium is associated with emission in the H$_2$ lines. These results have profound consequences on our understanding of regulation of star formation, feedback and energetics of galaxy formation in general. The fact that H$_2$ lines can be strongly enhanced in high-redshift turbulent galaxies will be of great importance for the \textit{James Webb Space Telescope} observations which will unveil the role that H$_2$ plays as a cooling agent in the era of galaxy assembly., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. OH is a key molecule in H2O chemistry, a valuable tool for probing physical conditions, and an important contributor to the cooling of shock regions. OH participates in the re-distribution of energy from the protostar towards the surrounding ISM. Our aim is to assess the origin of the OH emission from the Cepheus A massive star-forming region and to constrain the physical conditions prevailing in the emitting gas. We thus want to probe the processes at work during the formation of massive stars. We present spectrally resolved observations of OH towards the outflows of Cepheus A with the GREAT spectrometer onboard the SOFIA telescope. Three triplets were observed at 1834.7 GHz, 1837.8 GHz, and 2514.3 GHz (163.4, 163.1, and 119.2 microns), at angular resolutions of 16.3", 16.3", and 11.9", respectively. We present the CO (16-15) spectrum at the same position. We compared the integrated intensities in the redshifted wings to shock models. The two triplets near 163 microns are detected in emission with blending hyperfine structure unresolved. Their profiles and that of CO can be fitted by a combination of 2 or 3 Gaussians. The observed 119.2 microns triplet is seen in absorption, since its blending hyperfine structure is unresolved, but with three line-of-sight components and a blueshifted emission wing consistent with that of the other lines. The OH line wings are similar to those of CO, suggesting that they emanate from the same shocked structure. Under this common origin assumption, the observations fall within the model predictions and within the range of use of our model only if we consider that four shock structures are caught in our beam. Our comparisons suggest that the observations might be consistently fitted by a J-type model with nH > 1e5 cm-3, v > 20 km/s, and with a filling factor of ~1. We have observed five sulphur-bearing molecules in foreground diffuse molecular clouds lying along the sight-lines to five bright continuum sources. We have used the GREAT instrument on SOFIA to observe the 1383 GHz $^2\Pi_{3/2} J=5/2-3/2$ transitions of SH towards the star-forming regions W31C, G29.96-0.02, G34.3+0.1, W49N and W51, detecting foreground absorption towards all five sources; and the EMIR receivers on the IRAM 30m telescope at Pico Veleta to detect the H$_2$S 1(10)-1(01), CS J=2-1 and SO 3(2)-2(1) transitions. In nine foreground absorption components detected towards these sources, the inferred column densities of the four detected molecules showed relatively constant ratios, with N(SH)/N(H$_2$S) in the range 1.1 - 3.0, N(CS)/N(H$_2$S) in the range 0.32 - 0.61, and N(SO)/N(H$_2$S) in the range 0.08 - 0.30. The observed SH/H$_2$ ratios - in the range (0.5-2.6) $\times 10^{-8}$ - indicate that SH (and other sulphur-bearing molecules) account for << 1% of the gas-phase sulphur nuclei. The observed abundances of sulphur-bearing molecules, however, greatly exceed those predicted by standard models of cold diffuse molecular clouds, providing further evidence for the enhancement of endothermic reaction rates by elevated temperatures or ion-neutral drift. We have considered the observed abundance ratios in the context of shock and turbulent dissipation region (TDR) models. Using the TDR model, we find that the turbulent energy available at large scale in the diffuse ISM is sufficient to explain the observed column densities of SH and CS. Standard shock and TDR models, however, fail to reproduce the column densities of H$_2$S and SO by a factor of about 10; more elaborate shock models - in which account is taken of the velocity drift, relative to H$_2$, of SH molecules produced by the dissociative recombination of H$_3$S$^+$ - reduce this discrepancy to a factor ~ 3., Comment: 30 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

We present quantum dynamical calculations that describe the rotational excitation of H$_2$O due to collisions with H atoms. We used a recent, high accuracy potential energy surface, and solved the collisional dynamics with the close-coupling formalism, for total energies up to 12 000 cm$^{-1}$. From these calculations, we obtained collisional rate coefficients for the first 45 energy levels of both ortho- and para-H$_2$O and for temperatures in the range T = 5-1500 K. These rate coefficients are subsequently compared to the values previously published for the H$_2$O / He and H$_2$O / H$_2$ collisional systems. It is shown that no simple relation exists between the three systems and that specific calculations are thus mandatory.

We detect bright [CII]158$\mu$m line emission from the radio galaxy 3C 326N at z=0.09, which shows weak star formation ($SFR<0.07$M$_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$) despite having strong H$_2$ line emission and $2\times 10^9$M$_{\odot}$ of molecular gas. The [CII] line is twice as strong as the 0-0S(1) 17$\mu$m H$_2$ line, and both lines are much in excess what is expected from UV heating. We combine infrared Spitzer and Herschel data with gas and dust modeling to infer the gas physical conditions. The [CII] line traces 30 to 50% of the molecular gas mass, which is warm (70

Grain-grain processing has been shown to be an indispensable ingredient of shock modelling in high density environments. For densities higher than \sim10^5 cm-3, shattering becomes a self-enhanced process that imposes severe chemical and dynamical consequences on the shock characteristics. Shattering is accompanied by the vaporization of grains, which can directly release SiO to the gas phase. Given that SiO rotational line radiation is used as a major tracer of shocks in dense clouds, it is crucial to understand the influence of vaporization on SiO line emission. We have developed a recipe for implementing the effects of shattering and vaporization into a 2-fluid shock model, resulting in a reduction of computation time by a factor \sim100 compared to a multi-fluid modelling approach. This implementation was combined with an LVG-based modelling of molecular line radiation transport. Using this model we calculated grids of shock models to explore the consequences of different dust-processing scenarios. Grain-grain processing is shown to have a strong influence on C-type shocks for a broad range of magnetic fields: they become hotter and thinner. The reduction in column density of shocked gas lowers the intensity of molecular lines, at the same time as higher peak temperatures increase the intensity of highly excited transitions compared to shocks without grain-grain processing. For OH the net effect is an increase in line intensities, while for CO and H2O it is the contrary. The intensity of H2 emission is decreased in low transitions and increased for highly excited lines. For all molecules, the highly excited lines become sensitive to the value of the magnetic field. Although vaporization increases the intensity of SiO rotational lines, this effect is weakened by the reduced shock width. Some runaway stars are known to display IR arc-like structures around them, resulting from their interaction with surrounding interstellar material. The properties of these features as well as the processes involved in their formation are still poorly understood. We aim at understanding the physical mechanisms that shapes the dust arc observed near the runaway O star AEAur (HD34078). We obtained and analyzed a high spatial resolution map of the CO(1-0) emission that is centered on HD34078, and that combines data from both the IRAM interferometer and 30m single-dish antenna. The line of sight towards HD34078 intersects the outer part of one of the detected globulettes, which accounts for both the properties of diffuse UV light observed in the field and the numerous molecular absorption lines detected in HD34078's spectra, including those from highly excited H2 . Their modeled distance from the star is compatible with the fact that they lie on the 3D paraboloid which fits the arc detected in the 24 {\mu}m Spitzer image. Four other compact CO globulettes are detected in the mapped area. These globulettes have a high density and linewidth, and are strongly pressure-confined or transient. The good spatial correlation between the CO globulettes and the IR arc suggests that they result from the interaction of the radiation and wind emitted by HD 34078 with the ambient gas. However, the details of this interaction remain unclear. A wind mass loss rate significantly larger than the value inferred from UV lines is favored by the large IR arc size, but does not easily explain the low velocity of the CO globulettes. The effect of radiation pressure on dust grains also meets several issues in explaining the observations. Further observational and theoretical work is needed to fully elucidate the processes shaping the gas and dust in bow shocks around runaway O stars. We present the first Herschel spectroscopic detections of the [OI]63 and [CII]158 micron fine-structure transitions, and a single para-H2O line from the 35 x 15 kpc^2 shocked intergalactic filament in Stephan's Quintet. The filament is believed to have been formed when a high-speed intruder to the group collided with clumpy intergroup gas. Observations with the PACS spectrometer provide evidence for broad (> 1000 km s^-1) luminous [CII] line profiles, as well as fainter [OI]63micron emission. SPIRE FTS observations reveal water emission from the p-H2O (111-000) transition at several positions in the filament, but no other molecular lines. The H2O line is narrow, and may be associated with denser intermediate-velocity gas experiencing the strongest shock-heating. The [CII]/PAH{tot) and [CII]/FIR ratios are too large to be explained by normal photo-electric heating in PDRs. HII region excitation or X-ray/Cosmic Ray heating can also be ruled out. The observations lead to the conclusion that a large fraction the molecular gas is diffuse and warm. We propose that the [CII], [OI] and warm H2 line emission is powered by a turbulent cascade in which kinetic energy from the galaxy collision with the IGM is dissipated to small scales and low-velocities, via shocks and turbulent eddies. Low-velocity magnetic shocks can help explain both the [CII]/[OI] ratio, and the relatively high [CII]/H2 ratios observed. Understanding the origin of the composition of solar system cosmomaterials is a central question, not only in the cosmochemistry and astrochemistry fields, and requires various approaches to be combined. Measurements of isotopic ratios in cometary materials provide strong constraints on the content of the protosolar nebula. Their relation with the composition of the parental dark clouds is, however, still very elusive. In this paper, we bring new constraints based on the isotopic composition of nitrogen in dark clouds, with the aim of understanding the chemical processes that are responsible for the observed isotopic ratios. We have observed and detected the fundamental rotational transition of C$^{15}$N towards two starless dark clouds, L1544 and L1498. We were able to derive the column density ratio of C$^{15}$N over $^{13}$CN towards the same clouds, and obtain the CN/C$^{15}$N isotopic ratios, which were found to be $500\pm75$ for both L1544 and L1498. These values are therefore marginally consistent with the protosolar value of 441. Moreover, this ratio is larger than the isotopic ratio of nitrogen measured in HCN. In addition, we present model calculations of the chemical fractionation of nitrogen in dark clouds, which make it possible to understand how CN can be deprived of $^{15}$N and HCN can simultaneously be enriched in heavy nitrogen. The non-fractionation of N2H+, however, remains an open issue and we propose some chemical way of alleviating the discrepancy between model predictions and the observed ratios., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We report the first detection of interstellar mercapto radicals, obtained along the sight-line to the submillimeter continuum source W49N. We have used the GREAT instrument on SOFIA to observe the 1383 GHz Doublet Pi 3/2 J = 5/2 - 3/2 lambda doublet in the upper sideband of the L1 receiver. The resultant spectrum reveals SH absorption in material local to W49N, as well as in foreground gas, unassociated with W49N, that is located along the sight-line. For the foreground material at velocities in the range 37 - 44 km/s with respect to the local standard of rest, we infer a total SH column density ~ 2.6 E+12 cm-2, corresponding to an abundance of ~ 7 E-9 relative to H2, and yielding an SH/H2S abundance ratio ~ 0.13. The observed SH/H2S abundance ratio is much smaller than that predicted by standard models for the production of SH and H2S in turbulent dissipation regions and shocks, and suggests that the endothermic neutral-neutral reaction SH + H2 -> H2S + H must be enhanced along with the ion-neutral reactions believed to produce CH+ and SH+ in diffuse molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (SOFIA/GREAT special issue)

Molecular counterparts to atomic jets have been detected within 1000 AU of young stars. Reproducing them is a challenge for proposed ejection models. We explore whether molecules may survive in an MHD disk wind invoked to reproduce the kinematics and tentative rotation signatures of atomic jets in T Tauri stars. The coupled ionization, chemical and thermal evolution along dusty flow streamlines is computed for a prescribed MHD disk wind solution, using a method developed for magnetized shocks in the interstellar medium. Irradiation by wind-attenuated coronal X-rays and FUV photons from accretion hot spots is included, with self-shielding of H2 and CO. Disk accretion rates of 5e-6, 1e-6 and 1e-7 solar masses per year are considered, representative of low-mass young protostars (Class 0), evolved protostars (Class I) and very active T Tauri stars (Class II). The disk wind has an onion-like thermo-chemical structure, with streamlines launched from larger radii having lower temperature and ionisation, and higher H2 abundance. The coupling between charged and neutral fluids is sufficient to eject molecules from the disk out to 9 AU. The launch radius beyond which most H2 survives moves outward with evolutionary stage. CO survives in the Class 0 but is significantly photodissociated in the Class I/II. Balance between ambipolar heating and molecular cooling establishes an asymptotic temperature 700-3000 K, with cooler jets at earlier protostellar stages. Endothermic formation of H2O is efficient with abundances up to 1e-4, while CH+ and SH+ can exceed 1e-6 in the Class I/II winds. A centrifugal MHD disk wind launched from beyond 0.2-1 AU can produce molecular jets/winds up to speeds 100 km/s in young low-mass stars. We studied the abundance of HCN, H13CN, and HN13C in a sample of prestellar cores, in order to search for species associated with high density gas. We used the IRAM 30m radiotelescope to observe along the major and the minor axes of L1498, L1521E, and TMC 2, three cores chosen on the basis of their CO depletion properties. We mapped the J=1-0 transition of HCN, H13CN, and HN13C towards the source sample plus the J=1-0 transition of N2H+ and the J=2-1 transition of C18O in TMC 2. We used two different radiative transfer codes, making use of recent collisional rate calculations, in order to determine more accurately the excitation temperature, leading to a more exact evaluation of the column densities and abundances. We find that the optical depths of both H13CN(1-0) and HN13C(1-0) are non-negligible, allowing us to estimate excitation temperatures for these transitions in many positions in the three sources. The observed excitation temperatures are consistent with recent computations of the collisional rates for these species and they correlate with hydrogen column density inferred from dust emission. We conclude that HCN and HNC are relatively abundant in the high density zone, n(H2) about 10^5 cm-3, where CO is depleted. The relative abundance [HNC]/[HCN] differs from unity by at most 30 per cent consistent with chemical expectations. Aims: We employ archival Spitzer slit-scan observations of the HH211 outflow in order to investigate its warm gas content, assess the jet mass flux in the form of H2 and probe for the existence of an embedded atomic jet. Methods: Detected molecular and atomic lines are interpreted by means of emission line diagnostics and an existing grid of molecular shock models. The physical properties of the warm gas are compared against other molecular jet tracers and to the results of a similar study towards the L1448-C outflow. Results: We have detected and mapped the v=0-0 S(0) - S(7) H2 lines and fine-structure lines of S, Fe+, and Si+. H2 is detected down to 5" from the source and is characterized by a "cool" T~300K and a "warm" T~1000 K component, with an extinction Av ~ 8 mag. The amount of cool H2 towards the jet agrees with that estimated from CO assuming fully molecular gas. The warm component is well fitted by C-type shocks with a low beam filling factor ~ 0.01-0.04 and a mass-flux similar to the cool H2. The fine-structure line emission arises from dense gas with ionization fraction ~0.5 - 5 x 10e-3, suggestive of dissociative shocks. Line ratios to sulfur indicate that iron and silicon are depleted compared to solar abundances by a factor ~10-50. Conclusions: Spitzer spectral mapping observations reveal for the first time a cool H$_2$ component towards the CO jet of HH211 consistent with the CO material being fully molecular and warm at ~ 300 K. The maps also reveal for the first time the existence of an embedded atomic jet in the HH211 outflow that can be traced down to the central source position. Its significant iron and silicon depletion excludes an origin from within the dust sublimation zone around the protostar. Spitzer Space Telescope observations revealed powerful mid-infrared (mid-IR) H2 rotational line emission from the Stephan's Quintet (SQ) X-ray emitting large scale shock associated with a collision between two galaxies. Because H2 forms on dust grains, the presence of H2 is physically linked to the survival of dust, and we expect some dust emission to come from the molecular gas. To test this interpretation, IR observations and dust modeling are used to identify and characterize the thermal dust emission from the shocked molecular gas. The spatial distribution of the IR emission allows us to isolate the faint PAH and dust continuum emission associated with the molecular gas in the SQ shock. We model the spectral energy distribution (SED) of this emission, and fit it to Spitzer observations. Faint PAH and dust continuum emission are detected in the SQ shock, outside star-forming regions. The 12/24um flux ratio in the shock is remarkably close to that of the diffuse Galactic interstellar medium, leading to a Galactic PAH/VSG abundance ratio. However, the properties of the PAH emission spectrum in the shock differ from that of the Galaxy, which may suggest an enhanced fraction of large and neutrals PAHs. The IR SED is consistent with the expected emission from dust associated with the warm (>150K) H2 gas, heated by a UV radiation field of intensity comparable to that of the solar neighborhood, in agreement with GALEX UV observations. The presence of PAHs and dust grains in the high-speed (1000km/s) galaxy collision suggests that dust survives. We propose that the dust that survived destruction was in pre-shock gas at densites larger than a few 0.1cm-3, which was not shocked at velocities larger than 200km/s. We present a detailed analysis of the gas conditions in the H_2 luminous radio galaxy 3C326N at z~0.1, which has a low star formation rate (SFR~0.07 M_sun/yr) in spite of a gas surface density similar to those in starburst galaxies. Its star-formation efficiency is likely a factor ~20-30 lower than those of ordinary star-forming galaxies. Combining new IRAM CO emission-line interferometry with existing Spitzer mid-infrared spectroscopy, we find that the luminosity ratio of CO and pure rotational H_2 line emission is factors 10-100 lower than what is usually found. This may suggest that most of the molecular gas is warm. The Na D absorption-line profile of 3C326N in the optical suggests an outflow with a terminal velocity of ~ -1800 km/s and a mass outflow rate of 30-40 M_sun/yr, which cannot be explained by star formation. The mechanical power implied by the wind, of order 10^43 erg/s, is comparable to the bolometric luminosity of the emission lines of ionized and molecular gas. To explain these observations, we propose a scenario where a small fraction of the mechanical energy of the radio jet is deposited in the the interstellar medium of 3C326N, which powers the outflow, and the line emission through a mass momentum and energy exchange between the different phases in the ISM. Dissipation times are of order 10^7-8 yrs, similar or greater than the typical jet lifetime. Small ratios of CO and PAH surface brightnesses in another 7 H_2 luminous radio galaxies suggest that a similar form of AGN feedback could be lowering star formation efficiencies in these galxies a similar way. The local demographics of radio-loud AGN suggests that secular gas cooling in massive early-type galaxies of >= 10^11 M_sun could be regulated through a fundamentally similar form of 'maintenance-phase' AGN feedback., Comment: A&A in press, resubmitted with minor revisions

We investigated the chemistry of nitrogen--containing species, principally isotopomers of CN, HCN, and HNC, in a sample of pre-protostellar cores. We used the IRAM 30 m telescope to measure the emission in rotational and hyperfine transitions of CN, HCN, 13CN, H13CN, HN13C, and HC15N, in L 1544, L 183, Oph D, L 1517B, L 310. The observations were made along axial cuts through the dust emission peak, at a number of regularly--spaced offset positions. The observations were reduced and analyzed to obtain the column densities, using the measurements of the less abundant isotopic variants in order to minimize the consequences of finite optical depths in the lines. The observations were compared with the predictions of a free--fall gravitational collapse model, which incorporates a non-equilibrium treatment of the relevant chemistry. We found that CN, HCN, and HNC remain present in the gas phase at densities well above that at which CO depletes on to grains. The CN:HCN and the HNC:HCN abundance ratios are larger than unity in all the objects of our sample. Furthermore, there is no observational evidence for large variations of these ratios with increasing offset from the dust emission peak and hence with density. Whilst the differential freeze--out of CN and CO can be understood in terms of the current chemistry, the behaviour of the CN:HCN ratio is more difficult to explain. Models suggest that most nitrogen is not in the gas phase but may be locked in ices. Unambiguous conclusions require measurements of the rate coefficients of the key neutral--neutral reactions at low temperatures.

Context. The Spitzer Space Telescope has detected a powerful (L(H2)~10^41 erg s-1) mid-infrared H2 emission towards the galaxy-wide collision in the Stephan's Quintet (SQ) galaxy group. This discovery was followed by the detection of more distant H2-luminous extragalactic sources, with almost no spectroscopic signatures of star formation. These observations set molecular gas in a new context where one has to describe its role as a cooling agent of energetic phases of galaxy evolution. Aims. The SQ postshock medium is observed to be multiphase, with H2 gas coexisting with a hot (~ 5 10^6 K), X-ray emitting plasma. The surface brightness of H2 lines exceeds that of the X-rays and the 0-0 S(1) H2 linewidth is ~ 900 km s-1, of the same order of the collision velocity. These observations raise three questions we propose to answer: (i) Why H2 is present in the postshock gas ? (ii) How can we account for the H2 excitation ? (iii) Why H2 is a dominant coolant ? Methods. We consider the collision of two flows of multiphase dusty gas. Our model quantifies the gas cooling, dust destruction, H2 formation and excitation in the postshock medium. Results. (i) The shock velocity, the post-shock temperature and the gas cooling timescale depend on the preshock gas density. The collision velocity is the shock velocity in the low density volume filling intercloud gas. This produces a ~ 5 10^6 K, dust-free, X-ray emitting plasma. The shock velocity is smaller in clouds. We show that gas heated to temperatures less than 10^6 K cools, keeps its dust content and becomes H2 within the SQ collision age (~ 5 10^6 years). (ii) Since the bulk kinetic energy of the H2 gas is the dominant energy reservoir, we consider that the H2 emission is powered by the dissipation of kinetic turbulent energy. The runaway star HD34078, initially selected to investigate small scale structure in a foreground diffuse cloud has been shown to be surrounded by highly excited H2. We first search for an association between the foreground cloud and HD34078. Second, we extend previous investigations of temporal absorption line variations (CH, CH+, H2) in order to better characterize them. We have mapped the CO(2-1) emission at 12 arcsec resolution around HD34078's position, using the 30 m IRAM antenna. The follow-up of CH and CH+ absorption lines has been extended over 5 more years. In parallel, CH absorption towards the reddened star Zeta Per have been monitored to check the homogeneity of our measurements. Three more FUSE spectra have been obtained to search for N(H2) variations. CO observations show a pronounced maximum near HD34078's position, clearly indicating that the star and diffuse cloud are associated. The optical spectra confirm the reality of strong, rapid and correlated CH and CH+ fluctuations. On the other hand, N(H2, J=0) has varied by less than 5 % over 4 years. We also discard N(CH) variations towards Zeta Per at scales less than 20 AU. Observational constraints from this work and from 24 micron dust emission appear to be consistent with H2 excitation but inconsistent with steady-state bow shock models and rather suggest that the shell of compressed gas surrounding HD34078, is seen at an early stage of the interaction. The CH and CH+ time variations as well as their large abundances are likely due to chemical structure in the shocked gas layer located at the stellar wind/ambient cloud interface. Finally, the lack of variations for both N(H2, J=0) towards HD34078 and N(CH) towards Zeta Per suggests that quiescent molecular gas is not subject to pronounced small-scale structure., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We study the production of SiO in the gas phase of molecular outflows, through the sputtering of Si--bearing material in refractory grain cores, which are taken to be olivine; we calculate also the rotational line spectrum of the SiO. The sputtering is driven by neutral particle impact on charged grains, in steady--state C-type shock waves, at the speed of ambipolar diffusion. The emission of the SiO molecule is calculated by means of an LVG code. A grid of models has been generated. We compare our results with those of an earlier study (Schilke et al. 1997). Improvements in the treatment of the coupling between the charged grains and the neutral fluid lead to narrower shock waves and lower fractions of Si being released into the gas phase. More realistic assumptions concerning the initial fractional abundance of O2 lead to SiO formation being delayed, so that it occurs in the cool, dense postshock flow. Good agreement is obtained with recent observations of SiO line intensities in the L1157 and L1448 molecular outflows. The inferred temperature, opacity, and SiO column density in the emission region differ significantly from those estimated by means of LVG `slab' models. The fractional abundance of SiO is deduced. High-resolution spectroscopic observations (UV HST/STIS and optical) are used to characterize the physical state and velocity structure of the multiphase interstellar medium seen towards the nearby (170 pc) star HD102065, located behind the tail of a cometary-shaped, infrared cirrus-cloud, in the area of interaction between the Sco-Cen OB association and the Local Bubble. We analyze interstellar components present along the line of sight by fitting multiple transitions from CO, CH, CH+, C I, S I, Fe I, Mg I, Mg II, Mn II, P II, Ni II, C II, N I, O I, Si III, C IV, and Si IV. The absorption spectra are complemented by H I, CO and C II emission-line spectra, H$_2$ column-densities derived from FUSE spectra, and IRAS images. Gas components of a wide range of temperatures and ionization states are detected along the line of sight. Most of the hydrogen column-density is in cold, diffuse, molecular gas at low LSR velocity. This gas is mixed with traces of warmer molecular gas traced by H2 in the J>2 levels, in which the observed CH+ must be formed. We also identify three distinct components of warm gas at negative velocities down to -20 km/s. The temperature and gas excitation are shown to increase with increasing velocity shift from the bulk of the gas. Hot gas at temperatures of several 10^5 K is detected in the most negative velocity component in the highly-ionized species. This hot gas is also detected in very strong lines of less-ionized species (Mg II, Si II* and C II*) for which the bulk of the gas is cooler. We relate the observational results to evidence for dynamical impact of the Sco-Cen stellar association on the nearby ISM. We propose a scenario where the cirrus cloud has been hit a few 10^5 yr ago by a supernova blast wave originating from the Lower Centaurus Crux group of the Sco-Cen association., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, to be published in A&A

Determining the structure of and the velocity field in prestellar cores is essential to understanding protostellar evolution.} {We have observed the dense prestellar cores L 1544 and L 183 in the $N = 1 \to 0$ rotational transition of CN and \thcn in order to test whether CN is depleted in the high--density nuclei of these cores.} {We have used the IRAM 30 m telescope to observe along the major and minor axes of these cores. We compare these observations with the 1 mm dust emission, which serves as a proxy for the hydrogen column density.}{We find that while CN\jone is optically thick, the distribution of \thcn\jone intensity follows the dust emission well, implying that the CN abundance does not vary greatly with density. We derive an abundance ratio of $\rm [CN]/[\hh]=\dix{-9}$ in L 183 and 1-3\tdix{-9} in L 1544, which, in the case of L 183, is similar to previous estimates obtained by sampling lower--density regions of the core.}{We conclude that CN is not depleted towards the high--density peaks of these cores and thus behaves like the N-containing molecules \nnhp and \nhhh. Understanding the depletion of heavy elements is a fundamental step towards determining the structure of pre-protostellar cores just prior to collapse. We study the dependence of the NO abundance on position in the pre-protostellar cores L1544 and L183. We observed the 150 GHz and 250~GHz transitions of NO and the 93 GHz transitions of \NTHP \ towards L1544 and L183 using the IRAM 30 m telescope. We compare the variation of the NO column density with position in these objects with the H column density derived from dust emission measurements. We find that NO behaves differently from \NTHP \ and appears to be partially depleted in the high density core of L1544. Other oxygen-containing compounds are also likely to be partially depleted in dense-core nuclei. The principal conclusions are that: the prestellar core L1544 is likely to be 'carbon-rich'; the nitrogen chemistry did not reach equilibrium prior to gravitational collapse, and nitrogen is initially (at densities of the order of $10^4$~cm$^{-3}$) mainly in atomic form; the grain sticking probabilities of atomic C, N and, probably, O are significantly smaller than unity.

We have studied the chemistry of nitrogen--bearing species during the initial stages of protostellar collapse, with a view to explaining the observed longevity of N2H+ and NH3 and the high levels of deuteration of these species. We followed the chemical evolution of a medium comprising gas and dust as it underwent free--fall gravitational collapse. Chemical processes which determine the relative populations of the nuclear spin states of molecules and molecular ions were included explicitly, as were reactions which lead ultimately to the deuteration of the nitrogen--containing species N2H+ and NH3. The freeze-out of `heavy' molecules onto grains was taken into account. We found that the timescale required for the nitrogen--containing species to attain their steady--state values was much larger than the free--fall time and even comparable with the probable lifetime of the precursor molecular cloud. However, it transpires that the chemical evolution of the gas during gravitational collapse is insensitive to its initial composition. If we suppose that the grain--sticking probabilities of atomic nitrogen and oxygen are both less than unity (S less than 0.3), we find that the observed differential freeze--out of nitrogen- and carbon--bearing species can be reproduced by the model of free--fall collapse when a sufficiently large grain radius (a_{g}= 0.5 micron) is adopted. Furthermore, the results of our collapse model are consistent with the high levels of deuteration of N2H+ and NH3 which have been observed in L1544 providing that 0.5

Results: We report the detection of broad HCO+(1-0) lines (10 mK < T < 0.5 K). The interpretation of 10 of the HCO+ velocity components is conducted in conjunction with that of the associated optically thin 13CO emission. The derived HCO+ column densities span a broad range, $10^{11}< N(HCO+)/\Delta v <4 \times 10^{12} \rm cm^2/(km/s^{-1}$, and the inferred HCO+ abundances, $2 \times 10^{-10}

We have studied the evolution of molecular gas during the early stages of protostellar collapse. In addition to allowing for the freeze out of `heavy' species on to grains, we have computed the variation of population densities of the different nuclear spin states of ``tracer'' molecular ions such as H2D+ and D2H+. Processes which determine the relative populations of the nuclear spin states of molecules and molecular ions have received much less attention in the literature than those involved in their deuteration; but in fact the former processes are as significant as the latter and often involve the same reactants. We find that the ortho:para ratio of some species, e.g. H2D+, vary considerably as the density increases. Because the dynamical timescale is much shorter than some of the chemical timescales, there can be large departures of the predictions of the free--fall model from the steady state solution at the same density and temperature. In the case of H2, it seems unlikely that the steady state value of the ortho:para ratio is attained before protostellar collapse from the progenitor molecular cloud commences. Values of the ortho:para H2 ratio much higher than in steady state, which would prevail in ``young'' molecular clouds, are found to be inconsistent with high levels of deuteration of the gas. The internal energy of ortho--H2 acts as a reservoir of chemical energy which inhibits the deuteration of H3+ and hence of other species, such as N2H+ and NH3. In essence, the deuteration of molecular ions and molecules is sensitive to the ortho:para H2 ratio and hence to the chemical and thermal history of the parent molecular cloud., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

To investigate the presence of small scale structure in the spatial distribution of H2 molecules we have undertaken repeated FUSE UV observations of the runaway O9.5V star, HD34078. In this paper we present five spectra obtained between January 2000 and October 2002. These observations reveal an unexpectedly large amount of highly excited H2. Column densities for H2 levels from (v = 0, J = 0) up to (v = 0, J = 11) and for several v = 1 and v = 2 levels are determined. These results are interpreted in the frame of a model involving essentially two components: i) a foreground cloud (unaffected by HD34078) responsible for the H2 (J = 0, 1), CI, CH, CH+ and CO absorptions; ii) a dense layer of gas (n = 10E4 cm-3) close to the O star and strongly illuminated by its UV flux which accounts for the presence of highly excited H2. Our model successfully reproduces the H2 excitation, the CI fine-structure level populations as well as the CH, CH+ and CO column densities. We also examine the time variability of H2 absorption lines tracing each of these two components. From the stability of the J = 0, 1 and 2 damped H2 profiles we infer a 3 sigma upper limit on column density variations Delta(N(H2))/N(H2) of 5% over scales ranging from 5 to 50 AU. This result clearly rules out any pronounced ubiquitous small scale "density" structure of the kind apparently seen in HI. The lines from highly excited gas are also quite stable (equivalent to Delta(N)/N <= 30%) indicating i) that the ambient gas through which HD34078 is moving is relatively uniform and ii) that the gas flow along the shocked layer is not subject to marked instabilities

We present time-dependent 1D simulations of multifluid magnetic shocks with chemistry resolved down to the mean free path. They are obtained with an adaptive moving grid implemented with an implicit scheme. We examine a broad range of parameters relevant to conditions in dense molecular clouds, with preshock densities between 10^3 and 10^5 cm-3, velocities between 10 and 40 km/s, and three different scalings for the transverse magnetic field: B=0,0.1,1 \mu G \sqrt{n.cm3}. We first use this study to validate the results of Chi\`eze, Pineau des For\^ets & Flower (1998), in particular the long delays necessary to obtain steady C-type shocks, and we provide evolutionary time-scales for a much greater range of parameters. We also present the first time-dependent models of dissociative shocks with a magnetic precursor, including the first models of stationary CJ shocks in molecular conditions. We find that the maximum speed for steady C-type shocks is reached before the occurrence of a sonic point in the neutral fluid, unlike previously thought. As a result, the maximum speed for C-shocks is lower than previously believed. Finally, we find a large amplitude bouncing instability in J-type fronts near the H2 dissociation limit (u ~ 25-30 km/s), driven by H2 dissociation/reformation. At higher speeds, we find an oscillatory behaviour of short period and small amplitude linked to collisional ionisation of H. Both instabilities are suppressed after some time when a magnetic field is present. In the first paper of this series (Paper I) we computed time dependent simulations of multifluid shocks with chemistry and a transverse magnetic field frozen in the ions, using an adaptive moving grid. In this paper, we present new analytical results on steady-state molecular shocks. Relationships between density and pressure in the neutral fluid are derived for the cold magnetic precursor, hot magnetic precursor, adiabatic shock front, and the following cooling layer. The compression ratio and temperature behind a fully dissociative adiabatic shock is also derived. To prove that these results may even hold for intermediate ages, we design a test to locally characterise the validity of the steady state equations in a time-dependent shock simulation. Applying this tool to the results of Paper I, we show that most of these shocks (all the stable ones) are indeed in a quasi-steady state at all times, i.e. : a given snapshot is composed of one or more truncated steady shock. Finally, we use this property to produce a construction method of any intermediate time of low velocity shocks (u < 20 km/s) with only a steady-state code. In particular, this method allows one to predict the occurrence of steady CJ-type shocks more accurately than previously proposed criteria., Comment: A&A in press
