We present a series of experiments testing the accuracy of a new closed-form multiband EGN model, carried out over a full-Raman 9-span C+L link. Transmission regimes ranged from linear to strongly non-linear with large ISRS. 4. An Analytical Model for Performance Estimation in High-Capacity IMDD Systems

Abstract

In this paper, we propose an analytical model to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the output of an adaptive equalizer in intensity modulation and direct detection (IMDD) optical transmission systems affected by shot noise, thermal noise, relative intensity noise (RIN), chromatic dispersion (CD) and bandwidth limitations. We develop the model as an extension of a previously presented one, and then we test its accuracy by sweeping the main parameters of a 4-PAM-based communication system such as RIN coefficient, extinction ratio, CD coefficient and equalizer memory. Our findings show a remarkable agreement between time-domain simulations and analytical results, with SNR discrepancies below 0.1 dB in most cases, for both feed-forward and decision-feedback equalization. We consider that the proposed model is a powerful tool for the numerical design of strongly band-limited IMDD systems using receiver equalization, as it happens in most of modern and future M-PAM solutions for short reach and access systems.

Abstract

We derived an approximate non-linear interference (NLI) closed-form model (CFM), capable of handling a very broad range of optical WDM system scenarios. We tested the CFM over 8500 randomized C-band WDM systems, of which 6250 were fully-loaded and 2250 were partially loaded. The systems had highly diversified channel formats, symbol rates, fibers, as well as other parameters. We improved the CFM accuracy by augmenting the formula with simple machine-learning factors, optimized by leveraging the system test-set. We further improvedthe CFM by adding a term which models special situations where NLI has high self-coherence. In the end, we obtained a very good match with the results found using the numerically-integrated Enhanced GN-model (or EGN-model). We also checked the CFM accuracy by comparing its predictions with full-C-Band split-step simulations of 300 randomized systems. Moreover, we tested our model predictions against experimental measurements, confirming its accuracy.

18. TDECQ-Based Optimization of Nonlinear Digital Pre-Distorters for VCSEL-MMF Optical Links Using End-to-End Learning

Abstract

We investigate in this article the use of nonlinear digital pre-distorters (DPDs) for improving the performance of optical transmitters (TX) employing vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), according to the standard transmitter and dispersion eye closure quaternary (TDECQ) compliance test for short-reach intra data center interconnects (DCI) using PAM4 over multi-mode fibers (MMF). We present a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach for nonlinear DPD optimization, suitable for training the pre-distorters using either a direct learning architecture (DLA) or an end-to-end (E2E) learning system. Then, we focus on a novel E2E architecture based on the reference TDECQ specifications for MMF optical links at net 100 Gbps per wavelength ($\lambda$). We experimentally implement the proposed methodology over a VCSEL-MMF setup compliant to the TDECQ test requirements. We evaluate the TDECQ performance of an optical TX employing a commercial 850 nm VCSEL at 107.2 Gbps driven at several nonlinear conditions, comparing nonlinear DPDs optimized using both DLA and TDECQ-based E2E approaches. Experimental results show that nonlinear DPD significantly enhances TDECQ performance, enabling compliance with the IEEE P802.3dbTM requirements for net 100 Gbps/$\lambda$ even in scenarios in which, without nonlinear DPD, the TDECQ test would fail due to VCSEL nonlinear distortions. In particular, nonlinear DPDs trained using the TDECQ-based E2E approach exhibit a consistent 0.8 dB gain in terms of TDECQ with respect to using the DLA.

19. ML-Based Spectral Power Profiles Prediction in Presence of ISRS for Ultra-Wideband Transmission

Abstract

A generalized method based on machine learning (ML) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) is proposed for a fast and accurate prediction of spectral and spatial evolution of power profiles in support of performance and quality-of-transmission (QoT) real-time assessment of ultra-wideband links. These systems, operating on bandwidths larger than the standard C–band, are affected by inter-channel stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS), whose impact on power profiles evolution along the fiber is generally estimated by solving numerically a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). However, the computational effort, in terms of complexity and convergence time to the solution, increases with the bandwidth and the number of transmitted wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) channels, which makes the usual approach no longer particularly suitable to operate in real time. To meet the speed requirements, three different ANNs are introduced to make fast predictions of power profiles over frequency and distance considering a wide range of scenarios: different power per channel values, different fiber types and different span lengths. Two ANNs are used on synthetic data to estimate the impact of linear and nonlinear fiber impairments in support of system modeling. Specifically, one to directly predict the evolution of spectral power profiles along the fiber and the other to estimate the coefficients to insert in a closed-form version of the EGN model. A third ANN operates on experimental data and it is used to predict power profiles at the end of the fiber for fast estimations of system performance. The obtained results show highly accurate predictions with values of maximum absolute error, computed between predicted and actual power profiles, not exceeding 0.2 dB for $\sim$97% of cases for synthetic data and always below 0.5 dB for experimental data. Such results prove the potential of the proposed approach making it suitable for real time application of QoT estimation.

Abstract

The steady state behavior of regular two-connected multihop networks in uniform traffic under hot-potato and a simple single-buffer deflection routing technique is analyzed for very high bit rate optical applications. Manhattan Street Network and ShuffleNet are compared in terms of throughput, delay, deflection probability, and hop distribution both analytically and by simulation. It is analytically verified that this single-buffer deflection routing technique recovers in both networks more than 60% of the throughput loss of hot-potato with respect to store-and-forward when packets are generated with independent destinations. This gain, however, decreases to below 40% when the average message length exceeds 20 packets.
