This article traces the development of Edmund Husserl’s approach to the concept of the ego through the different stages of the evolution of his phenomenological project. The aim is to delineate Husserl’s shifting viewpoints from a Humean to a Kantian perspective, particularly focusing on the transition toward a Kantian transcendental approach. Through an analysis of Husserl’s engagement with Kant’s texts, especially on transcendental apperception, the study reveals how Husserl’s encounters with Kantian philosophy informed his conceptualization of the ego. It further examines the “empty character” of the ego, contrasting Husserl’s and Kant’s strategies to address Humean skepticism and their differing solutions for integrating the egological dimension into subjective experience: The transcendence-in-immanence of the ego for Husserl, the I as analytical form of thoughts for Kant.

Il presente lavoro analizza l’impatto dell’utilizzo dei sistemi di intelligenza artificiale nell’esercizio delle funzioni pubbliche, con particolare attenzione alle conseguenze derivanti dalla delega di compiti complessi a tali strumenti, anche nell’ambito dei procedimenti discrezionali. In tale contesto, si riflette su come l’automazione decisionale possa influire sulla trasparenza, sul giusto procedimento e sulla responsabilità umana, elementi fondamentali per garantire la legittimità dell’azione amministrativa, nonché sul ruolo da attribuire all’AI. nel contributo verranno analizzate la normativa, nazionale ed europea in materia, nonché l’impostazione giurisprudenziale, che riflettono un’attenzione crescente verso la trasparenza e la responsabilità, aspetti considerati essenziali per l’adozione sicura ed efficace dell’AI nei contesti pubblici.

The Italian shellfish industry mainly comprises clams, mussels, and oysters. While clam production thrives and Italy leads Europe, mussel farming faces economic challenges. Oyster production is relatively new and holds potential. Sustainable development is crucial for meeting growing seafood demand while ensuring resource conservation and food safety. This paper, part of the VALUE-SHELL project funded by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests (MASAF) as part of support activities for the National Strategic Plan of Aquaculture, combines desk research on industry structure and public interventions using a collaborative approach involving stakeholder interviews and focus groups with producers and local entities to assess the sector’s most compelling needs. The collaborative process highlighted key challenges across the following four sustainability pillars: environmental (global warming, predator control, and pollution mitigation are critical concerns for ecosystem balance); economic (increased production costs and limited diversification opportunities affect profitability); social (fear of generational decline due to limited training and education opportunities poses a threat to the industry’s future); and institutional (lack of a dedicated aquaculture law and fragmented governance hinder long-term planning). The project identifies policy bottlenecks hindering the sector’s potential, caused by not fully addressing producer needs. Sustainable development strategies are essential for addressing these challenges and ensuring the Italian shellfish industry’s future.

In the WCLL-BB liquid blanket concept, among the postulated accidental scenarios to be investigated regarding the PbLi system, a loss of liquid metal is one of the most crucial for safety purposes. As a consequence of this loss, chemical reactions might occur between lithium, air, and water. These reactions may lead to significant increases in temperature and pressure and to the formation of hydrogen inside the building; the evaluation of the impact of these events is essential to define future safety guidelines. Using MELCOR for fusion (v.1.8.6.), a first approach for investigating an out-vessel loss of PbLi was presented in this work. The temperature and pressure trends were investigated through the default MELCOR package for lithium air chemical reactions; however, this package works only with pure lithium. Therefore, a new model of the reaction was developed in this work using MELCOR Control Functions, which allows the simulation of the chemical reactions using PbLi as working fluid, in order to investigate a more realistic scenario. The results from different approaches were compared, and the limits of the code were outlined. It was found that the final pressure and temperature in the tokamak building might reach critical values at the end of the transient, if the energy released by the chemical reaction was entirely considered; however, it is important to note that, due to the assumptions and simplifications adopted, the results were very conservative in terms of temperature and pressure reached in the system, and further investigations were suggested in this work.

Introduction Programmes for older people aimed at increasing physical activity (PA) and reducing sedentary behaviour (SB) traditionally focus on achieving functional and health improvements. Focusing on enjoyment and social inclusion could strengthen adherence and help reach older people with social disadvantages. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the Join4Joy approach in PA programmes and its assessment tools.Methods and analysis A multicentric, pragmatic, pre-post feasibility study using mixed methods will be conducted. The intervention will consist of a PA programme boosting enjoyment and social inclusion, grounded on a co-creation process. Trainers will offer twelve, 1-hour weekly sessions of structured, supervised, group-based PA. Participants will be encouraged to increase activity in daily living. 144 older people will be recruited from the community and nursing homes in Spain, Denmark, Italy, Germany, and France. Additionally, participants and trainers will be invited to join virtual communities of practice to share their experiences across settings and countries. Qualitative procedures will be used to explore the acceptability of the design via interviews and focus groups with participants and trainers. Quantitative methods will be used to assess uptake, adherence, retention, reach, satisfaction, enjoyment (PACES questionnaire), physical function (e.g., Short Physical Performance Battery), quality of life (EQ-5D-5L scale), perceived improvement (Patient Global Impression of Improvement scale-I), activities of daily living (Barthel index) and SB and PA patterns (IPAQ and accelerometry). The degree and type of participation in virtual communities of practice will also be assessed. SPSS software will be used for the analysis of quantitative variables. Qualitative data will be analysed using reflective thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke (2006).Ethics and dissemination A favourable report by the Research Ethics Committee of UVic-UCC (282/2023) was obtained on 26 June 26th, 2023. Participation and withdrawal will be voluntary. Participants’ (or their legal guardians’, when necessary) written permission will be required. Results of the study will be disseminated through publication of scientific articles, presentations at sport and health-related professional conferences and congresses, as well as through social media and via the Join4Joy website.Study registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT06100835.

The contribution aims to present the results obtained from the archaeological analysis of the architecture of the Cathedral of San Massimo in Forcona (AQ), which took place in 2021, focusing on the digital systems used for the documentation and valorization of the monument. The work is part of a broader research project developed by the University of L'Aquila and focused on the archaeological study of medieval architecture as a function of the creation of a database on a chronological-typological basis of the masonry construction techniques of the city and its territory. The first structure to be analyzed was the Cathedral of San Massimo in Forcona, which, although it is located at a significant distance from the city center, represented a power pole of fundamental importance for the political-economic administration of the territory, at least until the construction of the city of L'Aquila. The documentation carried out through integrated TLS/SfM digital surveys and archaeological analysis allowed first to establish a chronological sequence of the construction phases of the church, but also to hypothesize through 3D reconstructions the historical evolution of the entire architectural complex. These reconstructions then became the digital support for the creation of a series of immersive VR systems aimed at providing experiences of interactive storytelling and dissemination of research outcomes.

Background and Aims: Hypoalbuminemia, as defined by serum albumin (SA) levels ≤35 g/L, is associated to venous and arterial thrombosis in general population and in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. It is unknown if SA ≤35 g/L is also associated to portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in cirrhosis. Methods: Cirrhotic patients enrolled in the Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: Italian Venous thrombotic Events Registry (PRO-LIVER) study (n = 753), were followed-up for 2 years to assess the risk of PVT, that was diagnosed by Doppler ultrasonography. Child-Pugh classes, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, presence of hepatocellular carcinoma and laboratory variables including SA, D-dimer, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured at baseline. Results: SA ≤35 g/L was detected in 52% of patients. A logistic multivariate regression analysis showed that higher Child-Pugh class, hepatocellular carcinoma and thrombocytopenia were significantly associated to SA ≤35 g/L. In a subgroup of patients where data regarding hs-CRP and D-dimer were available, SA ≤35 g/L was inversely associated with hs-CRP and D-dimer. During the follow-up, a total of 61 patients experienced PVT. A Kaplan Meier survival analysis showed SA ≤35 g/L was associated to increased risk of PVT compared to SA >35 g/L (P = .005). A multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that male sex, lower platelet count, and SA ≤35 g/L remained associated to PVT after adjusting for confounding factors. Conclusion: Cirrhotic patients with SA ≤35 g/L are at higher risk of experiencing PVT compared to those with SA >35 g/L and could be considered as potential candidates to anticoagulant prophylaxis for PVT prevention.

ObjectiveUnintentional drug poisoning and overdose deaths in New York City (NYC) increased 175% between 2010 and 2017, partly due to the transition from noninjectable opioids to heroin injection. This transition has led to concern of a resurgent HIV epidemic among persons who inject drugs (PWID) in NYC. Thus, we sought to characterize HIV transmission dynamics in PWID.DesignGenetic network analysis of HIV-1 public health surveillance data.MethodsWe analyzed HIV diagnoses reported to public health surveillance to determine the trajectory of the HIV epidemic among PWID in NYC, from 1985 through 2019. Genetic distance-based clustering was performed using HIV-TRACE to reconstruct transmission patterns among PWID.ResultsThe majority of the genetic links to PWID diagnosed in the 1980s and 1990s are to other PWID. However, since 2011, there has been a continued decline in new diagnoses among PWID, and genetic links between PWID have become increasingly rare, although links to noninjecting MSM and other people reporting sexual transmission risk have become increasingly common. However, we also find evidence suggestive of a resurgence of genetic links among PWID in 2018-2019. PWID who reported male-male sexual contact were not preferentially genetically linked to PWID over the surveillance period, emphasizing their distinct risk profile from other PWID.ConclusionThese trends suggest a transition from parenteral to sexual transmission among PWID in NYC, suggesting that harm reduction, syringe exchange programs, and legalization of over-the-counter syringe sales in pharmacies have mitigated HIV risk by facilitating well tolerated injection among new PWID.

Over the past decade, foodborne diseases have become a significant public health concern, affecting millions of people globally. Major pathogens like Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus contaminate food and cause several infections. This study investigates the potential of thyme essential oil (Thy-EO) as a natural antimicrobial agent against most common and re-emerging foodborne bacteria, including S. enterica, Yersinia enterocolitica, and L. monocytogenes. Preliminary tests provided qualitative evidence of Thy-EO’s efficacy by evaluating its antibacterial activity through direct contact and vapor phase exposure. Then, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were defined to quantitatively evaluate the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of Thy-EO, revealing a strong inhibitory effect against S. enterica, Y. enterocolitica and L. monocytogenes. Additionally, Thy-EO exerted rapid bactericidal kinetics characterized by the disruption of bacterial cell membrane integrity over time. Results highlight Thy-EO’s potential as an alternative antimicrobial agent, demonstrating that treatment with Thy-EO significantly and irreversibly affects the growth of the tested foodborne pathogens.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is more common in the Northern Hemisphere. It is endemic mainly in North America, where the vectors are Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus, and in Eurasia, where the vectors are Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus. Both tick-borne diseases and LB are influenced by climate change. Africa and South America are crossed by the equator and are situated in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. In Africa, the LB is present on the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean coasts. Borrelia lusitaniae is prevalent in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, such as Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt. Ticks were detected in the Ixodes Ricinus, which are carried by migratory birds and the Ixodes inopinatus and captured by the Psammodromus algirus lizards. The Borreliae Lyme Group (LG) and, in particular, Borrelia garinii, have been reported in countries bordering the Indian Ocean, such as Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique, transported by migratory birds from North African countries, where the vector was identified as Hyalomma rufipes ticks. This review aims to document the presence of Borreliae LG and LB in Africa.

The contribution aims to describe the "Amiternum Project," one of the points of the University's Strategic Plan. The aim of this project is to transform the archaeological area in a short time into a virtuous example of cultural welfare. Archaeology, therefore, conceived as a form of salutogenesis, would be transformed into a useful tool for the prevention of social and cognitive decay, as well as a means of overcoming the cultural divide, through the tools of culture, inclusion and active involvement of the population, leveraging the "founding myth" that the city of Amiternum has always constituted for the entire L'Aquila area, surrounding towns and small villages.The most relevant aspect of the project is the promotion of active participation of citizens in the enhancement of the territory in an exercise of identity self-representation, the peculiarities of its heritage and culture.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.31.2023.16

This study examines whether, and to what extent, SFAS166/167 changed the role of securitization in bank liquidity and lending activities. We compare the sensitivity of on-balance sheet loan growth to the loan portfolio liquidity index proposed by Loutskina [(2011) The role of securitization in bank liquidity and funding management, Journal of Financial Economics 100, 663–684] between affected banks and control banks. We find that SFAS166/167 is significantly associated with a reduction in the use of securitization to enhance on-balance sheet liquidity, consistent with the view that consolidation on balance sheets may render the securitization of loans too costly to be considered an effective source of liquidity. In addition, we find that affected banks with the highest increase in liabilities from consolidating Qualified Special Purpose Entities (QSPEs) experienced a significant decrease in lending activities relative to the control banks. This is likely because consolidating former QSPEs may adversely affect the ability and willingness of banks to engage in securitization and issue new loans. Taken together, our results suggest that SFAS166/167, requiring the consolidation of former QSPEs, led to a decline in the role of securitization as a liquidity management tool in banks and to a significant decline in lending.

INTRODUCCIÓN: Se pierde y desperdicia un tercio de la producción mundial de alimentos, situación que impacta en la seguridad alimentaria de la población, el desarrollo económico y el medio ambiente1,2. El objetivo fue analizar cuanti/cualitativamente el desperdicio de frutas y hortalizas (FyH), y los factores que inciden en su generación en los comercios minoristas. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal. Se relevaron 30 comercios de la ciudad de La Calera, en el periodo 2022-2023. La investigación se desarrolló en el marco del proyecto Desperdicios de frutas y hortalizas en comercios minoristas (verdulerías) de Córdoba y Gran Córdoba. Análisis y caracterización en pos de un sistema alimentario sostenible, el cual contó con el respaldo de la secretaría de Investigación de la Universidad Siglo 21 y el financiamiento del Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología de la Provincia de Córdoba, según Resolución 2023/00000018. Se contactó a los titulares/encargados de los comercios, a quienes se les informó sobre el propósito del estudio, la garantía de confidencialidad sobre no dar a conocer su razón social y el manejo de datos, derecho de no participar de acuerdo con su disponibilidad e interés y de finalizar el cuestionario en el momento que lo desearan. Se respetó la voluntad de participar de cada encuestado mediante su consentimiento de manera verbal.

Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguinis, commensal bacteria present in the oral cavity of healthy individuals, upon entry into the bloodstream can become pathogenic, causing infective endocarditis (IE). Sialic acid-binding serine-rich repeat adhesins on the microbial surface represent an important factor of successful infection to cause IE. They contain Siglec-like binding regions (SLBRs) that variously recognize different repertoires of O-glycans, with some strains displaying high selectivity and others broader specificity. We here dissect at an atomic level the mechanism of interaction of SLBR-B and SLBR-H from S. gordonii with a multivarious approach that combines NMR spectroscopy and computational and biophysical studies. The binding pockets of both SLBRs are broad enough to accommodate extensive interactions with sialoglycans although with key differences related to strain specificity. Furthermore, and significantly, the pattern of interactions established by the SLBRs are mechanistically very different from those reported for mammalian Siglecs despite them having a similar fold. Thus, our detailed description of the binding modes of streptococcal Siglec-like adhesins sparks the development of tailored synthetic inhibitors and therapeutics specific for Streptococcal adhesins to counteract IE, without impairing the interplay between Siglecs and glycans.

An important component underlying the disparity in HIV risk between race/ethnic groups is the preferential transmission between individuals in the same group. We sought to quantify transmission between different race/ethnicity groups and measure racial assortativity in HIV transmission networks in major metropolitan areas in the United States. We reconstructed HIV molecular transmission networks from viral sequences collected as part of HIV surveillance in New York City, Los Angeles County, and Cook County, Illinois. We calculated assortativity (the tendency for individuals to link to others with similar characteristics) across the network for three candidate characteristics: transmission risk, age at diagnosis, and race/ethnicity. We then compared assortativity between race/ethnicity groups. Finally, for each race/ethnicity pair, we performed network permutations to test whether the number of links observed differed from that expected if individuals were sorting at random. Transmission networks in all three jurisdictions were more assortative by race/ethnicity than by transmission risk or age at diagnosis. Despite the different race/ethnicity proportions in each metropolitan area and lower proportions of clustering among African Americans than other race/ethnicities, African Americans were the group most likely to have transmission partners of the same race/ethnicity. This high level of assortativity should be considered in the design of HIV intervention and prevention strategies.
