The benefits of school and community partnerships are well documented in government reports and the academic literature. A number of government initiatives have been introduced to actively involve parents and the community in school matters. In addition, various agencies have produced resource kits and guidelines to assist schools and communities to develop and foster partnerships, and partnership agreements. Much of this study has focused on working with Aboriginal peoples. The use of the term, 'Aboriginal' in this paper refers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Initiatives such as 'What Works' have had some success in building strong Aboriginal community and school partnerships, however, the literature also reveals that despite such initiatives, the levels of success vary from school to school, with some partnerships unable to develop or be sustained. In responding to a gap in the current knowledge, the authors examine the value of school-community partnerships in a rural and remote school where the percentage of Aboriginal Australian students is high. A brief summary of the outcomes of some of the major initiatives with aims to build effective school and community partnerships is provided. This is followed by the findings from a small pilot research study on the implementation of initiatives to build strong school-community relationships in rural and remote Indigenous school settings in Western Australia. The challenges that may inhibit the establishment of successful school-community relationships/collaboration are discussed and suggestions provided on how these challenges can be addressed.

Drawing from a study of the experiences of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students, this paper presents an overview of the specific needs of these students as they enter and progress through their tertiary education. Extracts from a set of case studies developed from both staff and student interviews and an online survey are used to illustrate what we have categorised as the emotional, motivational, financial, study, literacy, and transitional needs of this particular cohort of students. Our findings, supported strongly by other current research, point to the need for a whole-of-university approach to enhancing the educational and subsequent employment opportunities for Aboriginal students. This includes acknowledging cultural and familial responsibilities, recognising and accommodating Aboriginal knowledge, and ensuring equitable experiences of university life.

There is an expectation that medical students in the UK will be able to demonstrate conversancy with social science relevant to medicine and health, including the means by which the relevant bodies of knowledge are generated through the use of social science research methods. This paper explores the structural and pedagogical challenges and opportunities posed by this demand. To achieve this a small scale research project seeking to establish the "state of the art" with respect to teaching and learning about these research methods was implemented. It was found that there is little formal reporting of practice in the literature and that this is a field largely unsupported with materials and resources. However, there were some common features in the ways that practitioners approach, organise and deliver the provision; and it was found that almost all the provision takes place in the early part of medical education. It is suggested that continuing problems with the status of social sciences, lack of clarity about whether the purpose is to enrich medicine with knowledge about health and generated by the social sciences, and/or explore the ontological and epistemological tensions between natural and social sciences coupled with the status of social scientists in medical education, may limit capacity to develop the field.

Reconstruction algorithms are at the forefront of accessible and compact data collection. In this paper, we present a novel reconstruction algorithm, SpecRA, that adapts based on the relative rarity of a signal compared to previous observations. We leverage a data-driven approach to learn optimal encoder-array sensitivities for a novel filter-array spectrometer. By taking advantage of the regularities mined from diverse online repositories, we are able to exploit low-dimensional patterns for improved spectral reconstruction from as few as p=2 channels. Furthermore, the performance of SpecRA is largely independent of signal complexity. Our results illustrate the superiority of our method over conventional approaches and provide a framework towards “fourth paradigm” spectral sensing. We hope that this work can help reduce the size, weight and cost constraints of future spectrometers for specific spectral monitoring tasks in applied contexts such as in remote sensing, healthcare, and quality control.

This paper presents findings from a comparative study of peer- and teacher-led Sex and Relationship Education (SRE). One lesson delivered by a peer educator, and one lesson delivered by a teacher was observed with the aim of exploring the communicative process between educators and students within SRE. It is claimed that open communication between students and peer educators promotes the adoption of positive attitudes to sexual health, making it a potential alternative to teacher-led provision. Yet to our knowledge, no studies have investigated the communicative process within peer-led adolescent health interventions to examine factors underpinning its potential efficacy. The development of a coding scheme to measure the extent to which educators and students are communicating openly within SRE is used to describe the communicative process between sex educators and students, characterise differences in communication within peer- and teacher-led conditions and discuss how these differences affect student participation in SRE. Results suggest interaction of students in the peer-led condition was different to that of students receiving teacher-led SRE; and provide valuable insight into educator-student communication in the context of classroom-based SRE.

This paper reports findings from a recent study of Australian Aboriginal higher education student experience. Reported here are extracts from a set of case studies of staff, specifically those working in Indigenous Centres, involved with these students in both teaching and support capacities. These participants provided a rich set of qualitative data regarding their own experiences in the learning and teaching of Australian Aboriginal students. The paper raises important issues for the improvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university student experience and for increasing their representation in higher education, a strategy strongly supported by several current government initiatives. Best practice in the context of this paper not only includes teaching and learning, which in turn has implications for raising the awareness of university teaching staff, but also applies more broadly at the level of university-wide responsibility including policy-making and future directions.

This article examines the quantity and content of sex and relationship education (SRE) delivered to students in Years 9-11 (aged 13-16 years) in 12 coeducational state secondary schools in England during 1997-2000. Teachers reported the delivery of an average of seven (range 0-12) sessions of SRE across the three years, with no SRE delivered in up to five schools in each year. Most teachers reported having covered contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and relationships at least once. Topics such as homosexuality and the negotiation of relationships and sexual encounters were rarely covered. Data collected from students provided a slightly different picture. At least one-half of students in all schools reported having received some SRE during Year 9 and at least 85% reported receiving some SRE during Years 10 and/or 11. Teachers identified various factors that limited the quality of the SRE delivered. The article discusses some of the challenges that arose when attempting to reconcile data gathered from students and teachers. (Contains 3 tables and 4 notes.)

Examined adolescents views about sex education, specifically their views about interaction in single- and mixed-sex groups. Surveys of English secondary school students indicated that most girls, and one-third of boys, want some or all of their sex education to be delivered in single-sex groups. Girls' experiences of sex education with boys illustrated numerous reasons why they believed they might gain greater benefit from single-sex classes. (SM)
