Search

We point out that, although SMEFT is constructed to be model-independent, this holds only if complete sets of operators are used. SMEFT analyses that focus on subsets of operators are only semi-model-independent. They probe classes of ultraviolet models, opening a window to the underlying new physics. This model dependence originates from the need to choose a weak basis, usually taken to be the down or up basis. This naturally leads to the introduction of a third SMEFT weak basis, the generic basis, which interpolates between the above two bases. Due to its generality, we argue that the generic weak basis is the most natural for new physics. In the down and up weak bases, only a specific product of the two transformation matrices from the weak to the mass basis is observable -- the CKM matrix. We derive new constraints on axion-like particles (ALPs) using precision $X$-ray polarization studies of magnetars. Specifically, we use the first detection of polarized $X$-rays from the magnetars 4U 0142+61 and 1RXS J170849.0-400910 by the Imaging $X$-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) to place bounds on the product of the ALP-photon and ALP-nucleon couplings, $g_{a\gamma}g_{aN}$, with $g_{aN}$ being responsible for ALP production in the core of the magnetar and $g_{a\gamma}$ controlling the ALP-photon conversion probability in the magnetosphere. These bounds are most sensitive to the magnetar core temperature, and we use two benchmark values of $1\times 10^8$ K and $5\times 10^8$ K to derive our constraints. For the latter choice, our bounds are competitive with the existing bounds on the coupling product coming from a combination of CAST (for $g_{a\gamma}$) and SN1987A (for $g_{aN}$). We advocate for more precise and extensive observational campaigns in the higher end of the $2~-~8~$keV spectral window, where ALP-induced polarization is the strongest. We establish that all of the one- and two-dimensional global conformal blocks are, up to some choice of prefactor, free-particle wavefunctions in tensor products of AdS$_3$ or limits thereof. Our first core observation is that the six-point comb-channel conformal blocks correspond to free-particle wavefunctions on an AdS$_3$ constructed directly in cross-ratio space. This construction generalizes to blocks for a special class of diagrams, which are determined as free-particle wavefunctions in tensor products of AdS$_3$. Conformal blocks for all the remaining topologies are obtained as limits of the free wavefunctions mentioned above. Our results show directly that the integrable models associated with all one- and two-dimensional conformal blocks can be seen as limits of free theory, and manifest a relation between AdS and CFT kinematics that lies outside of the standard AdS/CFT dictionary. We use multimessenger observations of the neutron star merger event GW170817 to derive new constraints on axion-like particles (ALPs) coupling to photons. ALPs are produced via Primakoff and photon coalescence processes in the merger, escape the remnant and decay back into two photons, giving rise to a photon signal approximately along the line-of-sight to the merger. We analyze the spectral and temporal information of the ALP-induced photon signal, and use the Fermi-LAT observations of GW170817 to derive our new ALP constraints. Missions like NASA's Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) are poised to provide an unprecedented view of the Universe in polarized X-rays. Polarization probes physical anisotropies, a fact exploited by particle physicists to look for the anisotropic $a\boldsymbol{E}\cdot\boldsymbol{B}$ operator in the axion-like-particle (ALP) Lagrangian. Such studies have typically focused on polarization in the radio and microwaves, through local or cosmic birefringence effects. To such polarization studies we add X-rays emanating from magnetars -- a class of neutron stars with near-critical strength magnetic fields -- that are important targets for IXPE. ALPs produced in the neutron star core convert to X-rays in the magnetosphere; such X-rays are polarized along the direction parallel to the dipolar magnetic field at the point of conversion. We develop the full theoretical formalism for ALP-induced polarization in the presence of dipolar magnetic fields. For uncorrelated photon and ALP production mechanisms, we completely disentangle the ALP contributions to the Stokes parameters in terms of the ALP intensity, the ALP-to-photon conversion probability, and the ALP-induced birefringence. In the proper limit, our results demonstrate that the inclusion of ALPs suppresses the observed degree of circular polarization compared to its pure astrophysical value. We describe how to implement the conformal bootstrap program in the context of the embedding space OPE formalism introduced in previous work. To take maximal advantage of the known properties of the scalar conformal blocks for symmetric-traceless exchange, we construct tensorial generalizations of the three-point and four-point scalar conformal blocks that have many nice properties. Further, we present a special basis of tensor structures for three-point correlation functions endowed with the remarkable simplifying property that it does not mix under permutations of the external quasi-primary operators. We find that in this approach, we can write the $M$-point conformal bootstrap equations explicitly in terms of the standard position space cross-ratios without the need to project back to position space, thus effectively deriving all conformal bootstrap equations directly from the embedding space. Finally, we lay out an algorithm for generating the conformal bootstrap equations in this formalism. Collectively, the tensorial generalizations, the new basis of tensor structures, as well as the procedure for deriving the conformal bootstrap equations lead to four-point bootstrap equations for quasi-primary operators in arbitrary Lorentz representations expressed as linear combinations of the standard scalar conformal blocks for spin-$\ell$ exchange, with finite $\ell$-independent terms. Moreover, the OPE coefficients in these equations conveniently feature trivial symmetry properties. The only inputs necessary are the relevant projection operators and tensor structures, which are all fixed by group theory. We explore the possibility that axion-like-particles (ALPs), which would be produced in the core of magnetars and would then convert in the magnetosphere into photons, can explain magnetar hard X-ray spectra. We remark that this scenario would also provide answers to some questions related to magnetar heating. Indeed, considering that magnetars have: 1) hard X-ray spectra that are difficult to explain with known mechanisms; 2) large photon luminosities that force high core temperatures; 3) high core temperatures that imply large neutrino emissivities; 4) and large neutrino emissivities that lead to small magnetar lifetimes in contradiction to observations -- explaining the hard X-ray spectra with ALPs could decrease the core temperatures and thus the neutrino emissivities, allowing for longer magnetar lifetimes as expected from observations. We complete the proof of "Feynman rules" for constructing $M$-point conformal blocks with external and internal scalars in any topology for arbitrary $M$ in any spacetime dimension by combining the rules for the blocks (based on their Witten diagram interpretation) with the rules for the construction of conformal cross ratios (based on OPE flow diagrams). The full set of Feynman rules leads to blocks as power series of the hypergeometric type in the conformal cross ratios. We then provide a proof by recursion of the Feynman rules which relies heavily on the first Barnes lemma and the decomposition of the topology of interest in comb-like structures. High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. Due to their unique set of multimessenger signals, neutron star mergers have emerged as a novel environment for studies of new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). As a case study, we consider the simplest extension of the SM scalar sector involving a light CP-even scalar singlet $S$ mixing with the SM Higgs boson. These $S$ particles can be produced abundantly in neutron star mergers via the nucleon bremsstrahlung process. We show that the $S$ particles may either be trapped in or stream freely out of the merger remnant, depending on the $S$ mass, its mixing with the SM Higgs boson, and the temperature and baryon density in the merger. In the free-streaming region, the scalar $S$ will provide an extra channel to cool down the merger remnant, with cooling timescales as small as ${\cal O}$(ms). On the other hand, in the trapped region, the Bose gas of $S$ particles could contribute a larger thermal conductivity than the trapped neutrinos in some parts of the parameter space, thus leading to faster thermal equilibration than expected. Therefore, future observations of the early postmerger phase of a neutron star merger could effectively probe a unique range of the $S$ parameter space, largely complementary to the existing and future laboratory and supernova limits. We review topics in searches for axion-like-particles (ALPs), covering material that is complementary to other recent reviews. The first half of our review covers ALPs in the extreme environments of neutron star cores, the magnetospheres of highly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars), and in neutron star mergers. The focus is on possible signals of ALPs in the photon spectrum of neutron stars and gravitational wave/electromagnetic signals from neutron star mergers. We then review recent developments in laboratory-produced ALP searches, focusing mainly on accelerator-based facilities including beam-dump type experiments and collider experiments. We provide a general-purpose discussion of the ALP search pipeline from production to detection, in steps, and our discussion is straightforwardly applicable to most beam-dump type and reactor experiments. We end with a selective look at the rapidly developing field of ultralight dark matter, specifically the formation of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs). We review the properties of BECs of ultralight dark matter and bridge these properties with developments in numerical simulations, and ultimately with their impact on experimental searches., Comment: Invited review, submitted to IJMPD. 58 pages, 11 figures. Quiescent hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray emission from neutron stars constitute a promising frontier to explore axion-like-particles (ALPs). ALP production in the core peaks at energies of a few keV to a few hundreds of keV; subsequently, the ALPs escape and convert to photons in the magnetosphere. The emissivity goes as $\sim T^6$ while the conversion probability is enhanced for large magnetic fields, making magnetars, with their high core temperatures and strong magnetic fields, ideal targets for probing ALPs. We compute the energy spectrum of photons resulting from conversion of ALPs in the magnetosphere and then compare it against hard X-ray data from NuSTAR, INTEGRAL, and XMM-Newton, for a set of eight magnetars for which such data exists. Upper limits are placed on the product of the ALP-nucleon and ALP-photon couplings. For the production in the core, we perform a calculation of the ALP emissivity in degenerate nuclear matter modeled by a relativistic mean field theory. The reduction of the emissivity due to improvements to the one-pion exchange approximation is incorporated, as is the suppression of the emissivity due to proton superfluidity in the neutron star core. A range of core temperatures is considered, corresponding to different models of the steady heat transfer from the core to the stellar surface. For the subsequent conversion, we solve the coupled differential equations mixing ALPs and photons in the magnetosphere. The conversion occurs due to a competition between the dipolar magnetic field and the photon refractive index induced by the external magnetic field. Semi-analytic expressions are provided alongside the full numerical results. We study conformal conserved currents in arbitrary irreducible representations of the Lorentz group using the embedding space formalism. With the help of the operator product expansion, we first show that conservation conditions can be fully investigated by considering only two- and three-point correlation functions. We then find an explicitly conformally-covariant differential operator in embedding space that implements conservation based on the standard position space operator product expansion differential operator $\partial_\mu$, although the latter does not uplift to embedding space covariantly. The differential operator in embedding space that imposes conservation is the same differential operator $\mathcal{D}_{ijA}$ used in the operator product expansion in embedding space. We provide several examples including conserved currents in irreducible representations that are not symmetric and traceless. With an eye on four-point conformal bootstrap equations for four conserved vector currents $\langle JJJJ\rangle$ and four energy-momentum tensors $\langle TTTT\rangle$, we mostly focus on conservation conditions for $\langle JJ\mathcal{O}\rangle$ and $\langle TT\mathcal{O}\rangle$. We introduce a full set of rules to directly express all $M$-point conformal blocks in one- and two-dimensional conformal field theories, irrespective of the topology. The $M$-point conformal blocks are power series expansion in some carefully-chosen conformal cross-ratios. We then prove the rules for any topology constructively with the help of the known position space operator product expansion. To this end, we first compute the action of the position space operator product expansion on the most general function of position space coordinates relevant to conformal field theory. Seven-point functions have two inequivalent topologies or channels. The comb channel has been computed previously and here we compute scalar conformal blocks in the extended snowflake channel in $d$ dimensions. Our computation relies on the known action of the differential operator that sets up the operator product expansion in embedding space. The scalar conformal blocks in the extended snowflake channel are obtained as a power series expansion in the conformal cross-ratios whose coefficients are a triple sum of the hypergeometric type. This triple sum factorizes into a single sum and a double sum. The single sum can be seen as originating from the comb channel and is given in terms of a ${}_3F_2$-hypergeometric function, while the double sum originates from the snowflake channel which corresponds to a Kamp\'e de F\'eriet function. We verify that our results satisfy the symmetry properties of the extended snowflake topology. Moreover, we check that the behavior of the extended snowflake conformal blocks under several limits is consistent with known results. In the low-energy effective theory of neutrinos, the Haar measure for unitary matrices is very likely to give rise to the observed PMNS matrix. Assuming the Haar measure, we determine the probability density functions for all quadratic, quartic Majorana, and quartic Dirac rephasing invariants for an arbitrary number of neutrino generations. We show that for a fixed number of neutrinos, all rephasing invariants of the same type have the same probability density function under the Haar measure. We then compute the moments of the rephasing invariants to determine, with the help of the Mellin transform, the three probability density functions. We compute $d$-dimensional scalar six-point conformal blocks in the two possible topologies allowed by the operator product expansion. Our computation is a simple application of the embedding space operator product expansion formalism developed recently. Scalar six-point conformal blocks in the comb channel have been determined not long ago, and we present here the first explicit computation of the scalar six-point conformal blocks in the remaining inequivalent topology. For obvious reason, we dub the other topology the snowflake channel. The scalar conformal blocks, with scalar external and exchange operators, are presented as a power series expansion in the conformal cross-ratios, where the coefficients of the power series are given as a double sum of the hypergeometric type. In the comb channel, the double sum is expressible as a product of two ${}_3F_2$-hypergeometric functions. In the snowflake channel, the double sum is expressible as a Kamp\'e de F\'eriet function where both sums are intertwined and cannot be factorized. We check our results by verifying their consistency under symmetries and by taking several limits reducing to known results, mostly to scalar five-point conformal blocks in arbitrary spacetime dimensions., Comment: 1+22 pages (+25 pages of appendixes), 9 figures

Supernovae and cooling neutron stars have long been used to constrain the properties of axions, such as their mass and interactions with nucleons and other Standard Model particles. We investigate the prospects of using neutron star mergers as a similar location where axions can be probed in the future. We examine the impact axions would have on mergers, considering both the possibility that they free-stream through the dense nuclear matter and the case where they are trapped. We calculate the mean free path of axions in merger conditions, and find that they would free-stream through the merger in all thermodynamic conditions. In contrast to previous calculations, we integrate over the entire phase space while using a relativistic treatment of the nucleons, assuming the matrix element is momentum-independent. In particular, we use a relativistic mean field theory to describe the nucleons, taking into account the precipitous decrease in the effective mass of the nucleons as density increases above nuclear saturation density. We find that within current constraints on the axion-neutron coupling, axions could cool nuclear matter on timescales relevant to neutron star mergers. We formulate a set of general rules for computing $d$-dimensional four-point global conformal blocks of operators in arbitrary Lorentz representations in the context of the embedding space operator product expansion formalism arXiv:1905.00434. With these rules, the procedure for determining any conformal block of interest is reduced to (1) identifying the relevant projection operators and tensor structures and (2) applying the conformal rules to obtain the blocks. To facilitate the bookkeeping of contributing terms, we introduce a convenient diagrammatic notation. We present several concrete examples to illustrate the general procedure as well as to demonstrate and test the explicit application of the rules. In particular, we consider four-point functions involving scalars $S$ and some specific irreducible representations $R$, namely $\langle SSSS\rangle$, $\langle SSSR\rangle$, $\langle SRSR\rangle$ and $\langle SSRR\rangle$ (where, when allowed, $R$ is a vector or a fermion), and determine the corresponding blocks for all possible exchanged representations., Comment: 1+61 pages

We show how to compute conformal blocks of operators in arbitrary Lorentz representations using the formalism described in arXiv:1905.00036 and arXiv:1905.00434, and present several explicit examples of blocks derived via this method. The procedure for obtaining the blocks has been reduced to (1) determining the relevant group theoretic structures and (2) applying appropriate predetermined substitution rules. The most transparent expressions for the blocks we find are expressed in terms of specific substitutions on the Gegenbauer polynomials. We show how to construct embedding space three-point functions for operators in arbitrary Lorentz representations by employing the formalism developed in arXiv:1905.00036 and arXiv:1905.00434. We study tensor structures that intertwine the operators with the derivatives in the OPE and examine properties of OPE coefficients under permutations of operators. The most general operator product expansion in conformal field theory is obtained using the embedding space formalism and a new uplift for general quasi-primary operators. The uplift introduced here, based on quasi-primary operators with spinor indices only and standard projection operators, allows a unified treatment of all quasi-primary operators irrespective of their Lorentz group irreducible representations. This unified treatment works at the level of the operator product expansion and hence applies to all correlation functions. A very useful differential operator appearing in the operator product expansion is established and its action on appropriate products of embedding space coordinates is explicitly computed. This computation leads to tensorial generalizations of the usual Exton function for all correlation functions. Several important identities and contiguous relations are also demonstrated for these new tensorial functions. From the operator product expansion all correlation functions for all quasi-primary operators, irrespective of their Lorentz group irreducible representations, can be computed recursively in a systematic way. The resulting answer can be expressed in terms of tensor structures that carry all the Lorentz group information and linear combinations of the new tensorial functions. We describe a prescription for constructing conformal blocks in conformal field theories in any space-time dimension with arbitrary quantum numbers. Our procedure reduces the calculation of conformal blocks to constructing certain group theoretic structures that depend on the quantum numbers of primary operators. These structures project into irreducible Lorentz representations. Once the Lorentz quantum numbers are accounted for there are no further calculations left to do. We compute a multivariable generalization of the Exton function. This generalized Exton function, together with the group theoretic structures, can be used to construct conformal blocks for four-point as well as higher-point correlation functions., Comment: 4 pages

This white paper highlights compact object and fundamental physics science opportunities afforded by high-throughput broadband (0.1-60 keV) X-ray polarization observations. X-ray polarimetry gives new observables with geometric information about stellar remnants which are many orders of magnitude too small for direct imaging. The X-ray polarimetric data also reveal details about the emission mechanisms and the structure of the magnetic fields in and around the most extreme objects in the Universe. The mixing of photons with light pseudoscalars in the presence of external electromagnetic fields has been used extensively to search for axion-like-particles. A similar effect for dark photon propagating states is usually not considered due to the Landau-Yang theorem. We point out that mixing between photon and dark photon propagating states in background electromagnetic fields can indeed occur, in non-linear QED, through a four-photon vertex by integrating out the electron box diagram. Starting from the Schwinger Lagrangian, we derive the equations of motion for dark photons interacting with the Standard Model photon through gauge kinetic terms. We provide expressions for the perpendicular and parallel refractive indices in series expansions in the critical field strength, valid both in the strong and weak background field limits. We then consider mixing between the photon-dark photon propagating system in the presence of pure electric and magnetic background fields, and work out the probability of conversion when the background fields are homogeneous. We indicate outlines of the calculation in the inhomogeneous case, and finally express our results in the active-sterile basis, where we find that the mixing induced by background fields can lead to corrections to the tree-level mixing in the zero field limit that is usually considered to probe such systems. We present further mathematical results on a function appearing in the conformal blocks of four-point correlation functions with arbitrary quasi-primary operators. The $H$-function was introduced in a previous article and it has several interesting properties. We prove explicitly the recurrence relation as well as the $D_6$-invariance presented previously. We also demonstrate the proper action of the differential operator used to construct the $H$-function.

Axion-like-particles (ALPs) produced in the core of a magnetar can convert to photons in the magnetosphere, giving rise to novel features in the X-ray spectrum. Since ALPs only mix with the parallel mode of the photon, the polarization of the soft and hard X-ray spectra is predicted to have an O-mode component, in addition to the mainly X-mode component given by most astrophysical models. The relative strength of the O-mode component depends on the intensity of ALPs produced in the core and the probability of conversion. We quantify our results by considering X-ray emission produced both by astrophysical processes and by ALP-photon conversion, in an uncorrelated fashion, and in different relative proportions, which we parametrize by the angle $\chi_0$. We then define a normalized astrophysics-subtracted Stokes parameter $R$ which only acquires non-zero values in the presence of ALP-photon conversion. We find, remarkably, that the parameter $R$ factorizes into a product of the ALP-to-photon conversion probability and $\cos(2\chi_0)$ and display $R$, as well as the usual Stokes parameter $Q$, as a function of the photon energy and relative fractions of ALP and photon intensities. Axion-like particles (ALPs) produced in the core of a magnetar will convert to photons in the magnetosphere, leading to possible signatures in the hard X-ray band. We perform a detailed calculation of the ALP-to-photon conversion probability in the magnetosphere, recasting the coupled differential equations that describe ALP-photon propagation into a form that is efficient for large scale numerical scans. We show the dependence of the conversion probability on the ALP energy, mass, ALP-photon coupling, magnetar radius, surface magnetic field, and the angle between the magnetic field and direction of propagation. Along the way, we develop an analytic formalism to perform similar calculations in more general $n$-state oscillation systems. Assuming ALP emission rates from the core that are just subdominant to neutrino emission, we calculate the resulting constraints on the ALP mass versus ALP-photon coupling space, taking SGR 1806-20 as an example. In particular, we take benchmark values for the magnetar radius and core temperature, and constrain the ALP parameter space by the requirement that the luminosity from ALP-to-photon conversion should not exceed the total observed luminosity from the magnetar. The implications of the anarchy principle on CP violation in the lepton sector are investigated. A systematic method is introduced to compute the probability density functions for the CP-violating rephasing invariants of the PMNS matrix from the Haar measure relevant to the anarchy principle. Contrary to the CKM matrix which is hierarchical, it is shown that the Haar measure, and hence the anarchy principle, are very likely to lead to the observed PMNS matrix. Predictions on the CP-violating Dirac rephasing invariant $|j_D|$ and Majorana rephasing invariant $|j_1|$ are also obtained. They correspond to $\langle|j_D|\rangle_\text{Haar}=\pi/105\approx0.030$ and $\langle|j_1|\rangle_\text{Haar}=1/(6\pi)\approx0.053$ respectively, in agreement with the experimental hint from T2K of $|j_D^\text{exp}|\approx0.032\pm0.005$ (or $\approx0.033\pm0.003$) for the normal (or inverted) hierarchy., Comment: 1+15 pages, 2 figures

Visible-sector SUSY-breaking effects are computed in terms of hidden-sector correlation functions for generic holomorphic scalar portals. The solutions, which are valid irrespective of the hidden-sector dynamics, are approximated with the help of the operator product expansion (OPE). Indeed, for theories with superconformal symmetry at high energy, the superconformal OPE formalism can be used to disentangle the high-energy dynamics, encoded in the OPE coefficients, from the low-energy dynamics of the SUSY-breaking vacuum expectation values. A systematic method is proposed to compute the OPE coefficients, using relations between correlation functions of superfields and correlation functions of their quasi-primary component fields. We introduce fully SGUTs, SUSY grand unified theories that, upon symmetry breaking through the Higgs mechanism, decompose into a visible sector and an extra sector where the dynamics of the extra sector gauge group is responsible for SUSY breaking. Fully SGUTs thus have the important feature that all gauge groups of the visible sector and the extra sector unify into a simple gauge group at the SGUT scale, therefore generalizing the successful MSSM gauge coupling unification to all the gauge couplings of the theory. By focusing on the ISS SUSY-breaking mechanism in the extra sector, we show that it is impossible to reproduce the MSSM matter content when there exists a metastable ISS SUSY-breaking state., Comment: 1+23 pages, 1 figure

The neutrino sector of a seesaw-extended Standard Model is investigated under the anarchy hypothesis. The previously derived probability density functions for neutrino masses and mixings, which characterize the type I-III seesaw ensemble of $N\times N$ complex random matrices, are used to extract information on the relevant physical parameters. For $N=2$ and $N=3$, the distributions of the light neutrino masses, as well as the mixing angles and phases, are obtained using numerical integration methods. A systematic comparison with the much simpler type II seesaw ensemble is also performed to point out the fundamental differences between the two ensembles. It is found that the type I-III seesaw ensemble is better suited to accommodate experimental data. Moreover, the results indicate a strong preference for the mass splitting associated to normal hierarchy. The anarchy principle leading to the see-saw ensemble is studied analytically with the usual tools of random matrix theory. The probability density function for the see-saw ensemble of $N\times N$ matrices is obtained in terms of a multidimensional integral. This integral involves all light neutrino masses, leading to a complicated probability density function. It is shown that the probability density function for the neutrino mixing angles and phases is the appropriate Haar measure. The decoupling of the light neutrino masses and neutrino mixings implies no correlation between the neutrino mass eigenstates and the neutrino mixing matrix and leads to a loss of predictive power when comparing with observations. It is shown how to obtain conformal blocks from embedding space with the help of the operator product expansion. The minimal conformal block originates from scalar exchange in a four-point correlation functions of four scalars. All remaining conformal blocks are simple derivatives of the minimal conformal block. Consistency of the unconventional view of de Sitter space as a quantum theory of gravity with a finite number of degrees of freedom requires that Coleman-De Luccia tunneling rates to vacua with negative cosmological constant should be interpreted as recurrences to low-entropy states. This demand translates into two constraints, or consistency conditions, on the scalar potential which are generically: 1) the distance in field space between the de Sitter vacuum and any other vacuum with negative cosmological constant must be of the order of the reduced Planck mass or larger and 2) the fourth root of the vacuum energy density of the de Sitter vacuum must be smaller than the fourth root of the typical scale of the scalar potential. These consistency conditions shed a different light on both outstanding hierarchy problems of the Standard Model of particle physics: the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking and the scale of the cosmological constant. In this paper we find the region in parameter space that is constrained by supernova cooling constraints when the models include dark sector particles with masses around 100 MeV or less. The white dwarf luminosity function, which provides information about their cooling, has been measured with high precision in the past few years. Simulations that include well known Standard Model physics give a good fit to the data. This leaves little room for new physics and makes these astrophysical objects a good laboratory for testing models beyond the Standard Model. It has already been suggested that white dwarfs might provide some evidence for the existence of axions. In this work we study the constraints that the white dwarf luminosity function puts on physics beyond the Standard Model involving new light particles (fermions or bosons) that can be pair-produced in a white dwarf and then escape to contribute to its cooling. We show, in particular, that we can severely constrain the parameter space of models with dark forces and light hidden sectors (lighter than a few tens of keV). An often-exploited feature of the operator product expansion (OPE) is that it incorporates a splitting of ultraviolet and infrared physics. In this paper we use this feature of the OPE to perform simple, approximate computations of soft masses in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. The approximation amounts to truncating the OPEs for hidden-sector current-current operator products. Our method yields visible-sector superpartner spectra in terms of vacuum expectation values of a few hidden-sector IR elementary fields. We manage to obtain reasonable approximations to soft masses, even when the hidden sector is strongly coupled. Contrary to popular belief conformality does not require zero beta functions. This follows from the work of Jack and Osborn, and examples in non-supersymmetric theories were recently found by some of us. In this note we show that such examples are absent in unitary N=1 supersymmetric four-dimensional field theories. More specifically, we show to all orders in perturbation theory that the beta-function vector field of such theories does not admit limit cycles.
