8. Modeling the Interaction of Proximal Fragments for Destructive Atmospheric Entry Analysis.

Abstract

The destructive atmospheric entry process is distinguished by the formation of several fragments due to the severe aerothermal loads encountered during the descent. The proximity of debris leads to shock wave interactions and collisions between bodies, influencing the overall dynamics of the fragments and affecting the prediction of demise and ground impact location. To account for these effects, the use of computational fluid dynamics is introduced to resolve the shock interaction patterns by employing a quasi-steady approach, and the use of a simple rigid-body collision model is introduced to represent the dynamics of fragments in the cloud of debris. The quasi-steady approach is assessed and validated by comparative analysis with a few studies in the literature. One of these examples is the rebuilding of the VKI's experiment of a free-flying ring crossing a shock wave generated by the presence of a stationary cylinder. The impact of explicitly modeling collision dynamics in the trajectory of fragments and ground spread distance is validated by considering a set of relevant test cases from the literature and tested them for destructive atmospheric reentry of the Attitude Vernier Upper Module, the launcher VEGA upper stage. 12. The Riemann Problem for Hyperbolic Equations under a Nonconvex Flux with Two Inflection Points

Abstract

This report addresses the solution of Riemann problems for hyperbolic equations when the nonlinear characteristic fields loose their genuine nonlinearity. In this context, exact solvers for nonconvex 1D Riemann problems are developed. First a scalar conservation law for a nonconvex flux with two inflection points is studied. Then the P-system for an isothermal version of the van der Waals gas model is examined in a range of temperatures allowing for a nonconvex pressure function. Eventually the system of the Euler equations of gasdynamics is considered for the polytropic van der Waals gas. In this case, a suitably large specific heat is considered such that the isentropes display a local loss of convexity near the saturation curve and the critical point. Such a nonconvex physical model allows for nonclassical waves to appear as a result of the change of sign of the fundamental derivative of gasdynamics. The solution of the Riemann problem for the considered real gas model reduces to a system of two nonlinear equations for the values of the density on the two sides of the contact discontinuity, much in the same manner of a recently proposed solution method for gases admitting nonlinear wavefields only fully genuine. Solutions containing nonclassical and mixed waves are presented for the three mathematical models. Abstract

This paper proposes a multi-fidelity approach to the modelling and simulation of destructive atmospheric re-entry of human-made space objects. The presence of fragments, generated during the demise process, and the complex geometries of the objects determine the formation of complex flow features that need to be accurately resolved to limit the uncertainty on the ground impact risk. Critical to the determination of the dynamics of the fragments is the ability to correctly predict aerothermodynamic loads. The paper proposes an approach to the integration of expensive high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solvers with fast low-fidelity methods for aerothermodynamics load calculation, that achieves a favourable trade-off between cost and accuracy. This multi-fidelity aerothermal approach is coupled with a 6-dof dynamic model to determine the motion of the fragments. For the high-fidelity modelling, a quasi-steady approach is used to determine the dynamics of the fragments in the instant following the breakup. The approach is validated with experimental data. Finally, a test case is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-fidelity at reducing the uncertainty in destructive re-entry predictions.

Abstract

Objective  Electrical cardiometry is an impedance-based monitoring technique that provides data on several hemodynamic parameters in a noninvasive way. There is limited information on clinical utility of the application of this technique in neonates. Study Design  In this study, we describe the case of a preterm neonate born at 30 2/7 weeks of gestational age who developed severe systemic infection with fluid refractory septic shock on day 2 of life. Discussion  Electrical cardiometry was used and proved very helpful in real-time guiding the choice and the dosing of the most appropriate inotrope drugs in this patient. In addition, it promptly underlined an abrupt drop of systemic vascular resistances occurring after administration of the first dose of antibiotic, thus warning the attending neonatologist to institute appropriate treatment before the clinical conditions could further worsen. Conclusion  This case report suggests that electrical cardiometry could be a useful tool in assessing, monitoring, and guiding care of neonates who develop severe septic shock. We suggest that electrical cardiometry is a promising approach in the management strategies of such patients that warrants informative clinical trials.
