The complexity of mathematical models describing respiratory mechanics has grown in recent years, however, parameter identifiability of such models has only been studied in the last decade in the context of observable data. This study investigates parameter identifiability of a nonlinear respiratory mechanics model tuned to the physiology of an extremely preterm infant, using global Morris screening, local deterministic sensitivity analysis, and singular value decomposition-based subset selection. The model predicts airflow and dynamic pulmonary volumes and pressures under varying levels of continuous positive airway pressure, and a range of parameters characterizing both surfactant-treated and surfactant-deficient lung. Sensitivity analyses indicated eleven parameters influence model outputs over the range of continuous positive airway pressure and lung health scenarios. The model was adapted to data from a spontaneously breathing 1 kg infant using gradient-based optimization to estimate the parameter subset characterizing the patient's state of health.

Recent X-ray studies of starburst galaxies have found that Charge eXchange (CX) commonly occurs between the outflowing hot plasma and cold gas, possibly from swept-up clouds. However, the total CX flux and the regions where CX occurs have been poorly understood. We present an analysis of the {\it XMM-Newton} observations of M82, a prototype starburst galaxy, aiming to investigate these key properties of the CX emisssion. We have used a blind source separation method in the image analysis with the CCD data which identified a component with the enhanced O-K lines expected from the CX process. Analyzing the RGS spectra from the region identified by the image analysis, we have detected a high forbidden-to-resonance ratio in the \ion{O}{7} He$\alpha$ triplet as well as several emission lines from K-shell transitions of C, N, and O enhanced in the CX process. The CX is less responsible for the emission line of Ne and Mg and the accurate estimation of the CX contribution is confirmed to be crucial in measuring chemical abundances. The temperature of the plasma as electron receiver in the CX process is significantly lower compared to that of the plasma components responsible for most of the X-rays. From the low temperature and an estimation of the CX emitting volume, we find that the CX primarily occurs in a limited region at the interface of the plasma and gas whose temperature rapidly decreases due to thermal conduction., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Accurate atomic data and plasma models are essential for interpreting the upcoming high-quality spectra from missions like XRISM and Athena. Estimating physical quantities, like temperature, abundance, turbulence, and resonance scattering factor, is highly dependent on the underlying atomic data. We use the AtomDB tool variableapec to estimate the impact of atomic data uncertainties in Einstein A coefficients, collisional rate coefficient, ionization and recombination rates in H-, He- and Li-like iron in modeling the spectrum of Perseus observed by Hitomi. The best-fit temperature, abundance, resonance scattering factor, and turbulence including atomic data uncertainties, varied approximately 17%, 35%, 30%, and 3%, respectively, from the best-fit temperature, abundance, resonance scattering factor, and turbulence estimated without atomic data uncertainties. This indicates that, approximately 32%, 35%, and 25% of the best-fit temperatures, abundances, and resonance scattering factors, including uncertainties lie outside the 3$\sigma$ error regions of their corresponding best-fit values computed with zero atomic data error. Expanding the energy range to 1.8-20.0 keV shows less variability, with 26% of the abundances and 22% of the resonance scattering factors lying outside the 3$\sigma$ error of the best-fit values. We also studied correlations between physical parameters and atomic rate uncertainties to identify key atomic quantities requiring precise lab measurements. We report negative correlations between best-fit temperature and z (1s.2s $^{3}\rm S_{1}\rightarrow 1s^{2}$) collisional rate coefficient, abundance and y (1s.2p $^{3}\rm P_{1}\rightarrow 1s^{2}$) collisional rate coefficient, abundance and z collisional rate coefficient, and positive correlation between resonance scattering factor and w (1s.2p $^{1}\rm P_{1}\rightarrow 1s^{2}$) collisional rate coefficient., Comment: Accepted for Publication in The Astrophysical Journal

This work aims at constraining the size, shape, and geometric albedo of the dwarf planet candidate 2002 MS4 through the analysis of nine stellar occultation events. Using multichord detection, we also studied the object's topography by analyzing the obtained limb and the residuals between observed chords and the best-fitted ellipse. We predicted and organized the observational campaigns of nine stellar occultations by 2002 MS4 between 2019 and 2022, resulting in two single-chord events, four double-chord detections, and three events with three to up to sixty-one positive chords. Using 13 selected chords from the 8 August 2020 event, we determined the global elliptical limb of 2002 MS4. The best-fitted ellipse, combined with the object's rotational information from the literature, constrains the object's size, shape, and albedo. Additionally, we developed a new method to characterize topography features on the object's limb. The global limb has a semi-major axis of 412 $\pm$ 10 km, a semi-minor axis of 385 $\pm$ 17 km, and the position angle of the minor axis is 121 $^\circ$ $\pm$ 16$^\circ$. From this instantaneous limb, we obtained 2002 MS4's geometric albedo and the projected area-equivalent diameter. Significant deviations from the fitted ellipse in the northernmost limb are detected from multiple sites highlighting three distinct topographic features: one 11 km depth depression followed by a 25$^{+4}_{-5}$ km height elevation next to a crater-like depression with an extension of 322 $\pm$ 39 km and 45.1 $\pm$ 1.5 km deep. Our results present an object that is $\approx$138 km smaller in diameter than derived from thermal data, possibly indicating the presence of a so-far unknown satellite. However, within the error bars, the geometric albedo in the V-band agrees with the results published in the literature, even with the radiometric-derived albedo.

V503 Her was previously proposed as an eclipsing symbiotic candidate based on photometric behavior and spectroscopic appearance indicating the composite optical spectrum. To investigate its nature, we analyzed long-term photometric observations covering one hundred years of its photometric history and new low-resolution optical spectroscopic data, supplemented with the multifrequency measurements collected from several surveys and satellites. Based on the analysis presented in this paper, we claim that V503 Her is not an eclipsing binary star. The optical and infrared wavelengths are dominated by a K-type bright giant with an effective temperature of 4 500 K, luminosity of 1 900 L$_\odot$, and sub-solar metallicity on the asymptotic giant branch showing semiregular complex multi-periodic pulsation behavior. V503 Her does not show the characteristics of strongly interacting symbiotic variables, but some pieces of evidence suggest that it could still be one of the 'hidden' accreting-only symbiotic systems. We present experimental inferences of cross-field impurity transport coefficients for Alcator C-Mod plasmas using a novel forward model for the entire Ca K-alpha spectrum, including satellite lines within the spectral range, to compare to high-resolution X-ray Imaging Crystal Spectroscopy (XICS). These measurements are complemented by Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) spectroscopy that constrains transport closer to the edge. Using new atomic data sets for both XICS and EUV analysis has enabled consideration of line ratios across both spectral ranges and has increased the accuracy of inferred transport coefficients. Inclusion of charge exchange between edge thermal neutrals and impurities is shown to be extremely important in C-Mod pedestals. We obtain D atomic neutral densities from experimental D Ly-alpha measurements at the midplane and compare these to SOLPS-ITER simulations, finding good agreement. Bayesian inferences of impurity transport coefficients are presented for L-, EDA H-, and I-mode discharges, making use of the Aurora package for forward modeling and combining our spectroscopic constraints. Experimentally inferred diffusion profiles are found to match turbulent transport models at midradius within uncertainties, using both quasilinear gyro-fluid TGLF SAT-1 and nonlinear ion-scale gyrokinetic CGYRO simulations. Significant discrepancies in convection are observed in some cases, suggesting difficulties in predictions of flat or hollow impurity profiles., Comment: 23 pages of main body; 38 pages including appendices. 17 figures. International guidelines/standards for human protection from electromagnetic fields have been revised recently, especially for frequencies above 6 GHz where new wireless communication systems have been deployed. Above this frequency a new physical quantity "absorbed/epithelia power density" has been adopted as a dose metric. Then, the permissible level of external field strength/power density is derived for practical assessment. In addition, a new physical quantity, fluence or absorbed energy density, is introduced for protection from brief pulses (especially for shorter than 10 sec). These limits were explicitly designed to avoid excessive increases in tissue temperature, based on electromagnetic and thermal modeling studies but supported by experimental data where available. This paper reviews the studies on the computational modeling/dosimetry which are related to the revision of the guidelines/standards. The comparisons with experimental data as well as an analytic solution are also been presented. Two new high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy missions, XRISM and Athena, will observe deeper and with higher X-ray resolution than ever before possible. Interpreting these new X-ray spectra will require understanding the impact that uncertainties on fundamental atomic quantities such as collisional cross sections, transition rates, and wavelengths have on spectral models. As millions of values are required to generate even a simple model of an optically-thin hot plasma, most such rates exist only as theoretical calculations. We have developed methods to estimate the uncertainty in the final spectral calculations based on published experimental data and plausible approximations to the uncertainties in the underlying atomic data. We present an extension to the pyatomdb code that implements these methods and investigate the sensitivity of selected strong diagnostic lines in the X-ray bandpass (0.3-12 keV)., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, to be published in ApJ

In systems as diverse as migrating mammals to road traffic, crowding acts to inhibit efficient collective movement. Bacteria, however, are observed to move in very dense groups containing billions of individuals without causing the gridlock common to other systems. Here we combine experiments, cell tracking and individual-based modelling to study the pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa as it collectively migrates across surfaces using grappling-hook like pili. We show that the fast moving cells of a hyperpilated mutant are overtaken and outcompeted by the slower moving wild-type at high cell densities. Using theory developed to study liquid crystals, we demonstrate that this effect is mediated by the physics of topological defects, points where cells with different orientations meet one another. Our analyses reveal that when comet-like defects collide with one another, the fast-moving mutant cells rotate vertically and become trapped. By moving more slowly, wild-type cells avoid this trapping mechanism, allowing them to collectively migrate faster. Our work suggests that the physics of liquid crystals has played a pivotal role in the evolution of collective bacterial motility by exerting a strong selection for cells that exercise restraint in their movement., Comment: 48 pages, 4 figures, 10 extended data figures

We present XMM-Newton observations of N132D, the X-ray brightest supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) that enables high-resolution spectroscopy in the soft X-ray band. A dozen emission lines from L-shell transitions of various elements at intermediate charge states are newly detected in the RGS data integrating the ~200-ks on-axis observations. The 0.3-2.0-keV spectra require at least three components of thermal plasmas with different electron temperatures and indicate clear evidence of non-equilibrium ionization (NEI). Our detailed spectral diagnostics further reveal that the forbidden-to-resonance line ratios of O VII and Ne IX are both higher than expected for typical NEI plasmas. This enhancement could be attributed to either resonance scattering or emission induced by charge exchange in addition to a possible contribution from the superposition of multiple temperature components, although the lack of spatial information prevents us from concluding which is most likely., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The explosive origin of the young supernova remnant (SNR) 3C 397 (G41.1-0.3) is debated. Its elongated morphology and proximity to a molecular cloud are suggestive of a core-collapse (CC) SN origin, yet recent X-ray studies of heavy metals show chemical yields and line centroid energies consistent with a Type Ia SN. In this paper, we analyze the full X-ray spectrum from 0.7-10 keV of 3C 397 observed with Suzaku and compare the line centroid energies, fluxes, and elemental abundances of intermediate-mass and heavy metals (Mg to Ni) to Type Ia and CC hydrodynamical model predictions. Based on the results, we conclude that 3C 397 likely arises from an energetic Type Ia explosion in a high-density ambient medium, and we show that the progenitor was a near Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRAS
