Search

Charge-conserving dynamics of non-interacting fermions monitored by local charge measurements have been shown to possess in 1D space only an area-law-entangled phase, with no measurement-induced phase transition (MIPT). This phenomenon was elegantly explained by an effective replica field theory given by a non-linear sigma model featuring large replica symmetries. In this work, we focus on the charge-conserving monitored dynamics of interacting fermions in 1D. Using a unifying replica Keldysh field theory, we show that more dynamical phases and transitions emerge owing to the reduction of replica symmetry when interactions are introduced. The reduced symmetry combines a discrete replica permutation symmetry and the charge-conservation within each replica. The former and its spontaneous breaking govern the MIPT between area-law and volume-law entanglement scalings, which can be described by a separatrix in the weak-coupling renormalization group flow. The replica-resolved charge conservation dictates the Kosterlitz-Thouless type ``charge-sharpening" transition between the two kinds of dynamics where the global charge information is either hidden or reconstructible from the local measurements. All the relevant phases and transitions can be understood within the same unifying field theory. Additionally, this field theory provides insight into why the charge-sharpening transition should only happen in the presence of volume-law entanglement scaling. Moreover, we show that our field theory, despite being constructed using the Keldysh formalism, is equivalent to a statistical mechanics model that describes the (replicated) time-evolution of the system's density matrix mapped to a doubled Hilbert space under the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism. Multilayer moir\'e materials can exhibit topological electronic features yet are inherently quasiperiodic -- leading to wave function interference whose Anderson-localizing tendency can be mitigated by topology. We consider a quasiperiodic variant of the chiral Bistritzer-MacDonald model for twisted bilayer graphene with two incommensurate moir\'e potentials that serves as a toy model for twisted trilayer. We observe "filaments" linking magic angles with enhanced density of states and fractal wave functions that evade localization; states away from the filaments mimic fractal surface states of dirty topological superconductors. We study shot noise in a two-dimensional, disordered marginal Fermi liquid (MFL) driven out of equilibrium. We consider electrons with Planckian dissipation on the Fermi surface coupled to quantum-critical bosons in the presence of disorder. In the non-interacting and strong electron-boson drag limits, MFL effects disappear and our theory reproduces known results. For the case where the bosons remain in equilibrium, inelastic scattering strongly suppresses the noise by dissipating the injected energy. Interestingly, we find that MFL effects do play a role in this regime, and give a weak enhancement on top of the otherwise strong suppression. In the presence of quenched disorder, the interplay between local magnetic-moment formation and Anderson localization for electrons at a zero-temperature, metal-insulator transition (MIT) remains a long unresolved problem. Here, we study the emergence of these phenomena in a power-law random banded matrix model of spin-1/2 fermions with repulsive Hubbard interactions. Focusing on the regime of weak interactions, we perform both analytical field theory and numerical self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations. We show that interference-mediated effects strongly enhance the density of states and magnetic fluctuations upon approaching the MIT from the metallic side. These are consistent with results due to Finkel'stein obtained four decades ago. Our numerics further show that local moments nucleate from typical states as we cross the MIT, with a density that grows continuously into the insulating phase. We identify spin-glass order in the insulator by computing the overlap distribution between converged Hartree-Fock mean-field moment profiles. Our results indicate that itinerant interference effects can morph smoothly into moment formation and magnetic frustration within a single model, revealing a common origin for these disparate phenomena., Comment: v2: 25 pages, 21 figures; published version

Topological insulators and superconductors support extended surface states protected against the otherwise localizing effects of static disorder. Specifically, in the Wigner-Dyson insulators belonging to the symmetry classes A, AI, and AII, a band of extended surface states is continuously connected to a likewise extended set of bulk states forming a ``bridge'' between different surfaces via the mechanism of spectral flow. In this work we show that this mechanism is absent in the majority of non-Wigner-Dyson topological superconductors and chiral topological insulators. In these systems, there is precisely one point with granted extended states, the center of the band, $E=0$. Away from it, states are spatially localized, or can be made so by the addition of spatially local potentials. Considering the three-dimensional insulator in class AIII and winding number $\nu=1$ as a paradigmatic case study, we discuss the physical principles behind this phenomenon, and its methodological and applied consequences. In particular, we show that low-energy Dirac approximations in the description of surface states can be treacherous in that they tend to conceal the localizability phenomenon. We also identify markers defined in terms of Berry curvature as measures for the degree of state localization in lattice models, and back our analytical predictions by extensive numerical simulations. A main conclusion of this work is that the surface phenomenology of non-Wigner-Dyson topological insulators is a lot richer than that of their Wigner-Dyson siblings, extreme limits being spectrum-wide quantum critical delocalization of all states vs. full localization except at the $E=0$ critical point. We study superconductivity in a two-dimensional, disordered marginal Fermi liquid. At the semiclassical level, the transition temperature $T_c$ is strongly suppressed because marginal Fermi liquid effects destroy well-defined quasiparticles. However, we show that interference between quantum-critical collective modes must be included, and these enhance $T_c$, violating Anderson's theorem. Magnetic topological semimetals (TSMs) allow for an effective control of the topological electronic states by tuning the spin configuration, and therefore are promising materials for next-generation electronic and spintronic applications. Of magnetic TSMs, Weyl nodal-line (NL) semimetals likely have the most tunability, and yet they are the least experimentally studied so far due to the scarcity of material candidates. Here, using a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation measurements, together with density functional theory calculations, we identify the square-net compound EuGa4 as a new magnetic Weyl nodal ring (NR) semimetal, in which the line nodes form closed rings in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Remarkably, the Weyl NR states show distinct Landau quantization with clear spin splitting upon application of a magnetic field. At 2 K in a field of 14 T, the transverse magnetoresistance of EuGa4 exceeds 200,000%, which is more than two orders of magnitude larger than that of other known magnetic TSMs. High field magnetoresistance measurements indicate no saturation up to 40 T. Our theoretical model indicates that the nonsaturating MR naturally arises as a consequence of the Weyl NR state. Our work thus point to the realization of Weyl NR states in square-net magnetic materials, and opens new avenues for the design of magnetic TSMs with very large magnetoresistance.

We study the electrical transport of a two-dimensional non-Fermi liquid with disorder, and we determine the first quantum correction to the semiclassical dc conductivity due to quantum interference. We consider a system with $N$ flavors of fermions coupled to SU($N$) critical matrix bosons. Motivated by the SYK model, we employ the bilocal field formalism and derive a set of finite-temperature saddle-point equations governing the fermionic and bosonic self-energies in the large-$N$ limit. Interestingly, disorder smearing induces a marginal Fermi liquid (MFL) self-energy for the fermions. We next consider fluctuations around the saddle points and derive a MFL-Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model. We find that the Altshuler-Aronov quantum conductance correction gives linear-$T$ resistivity that can dominate over the Drude result at low temperature. The strong temperature dependence of the quantum correction arises due to rapid relaxation of the mediating quantum-critical bosons. We verify that our calculations explicitly satisfy the Ward identity at the semiclassical and quantum levels. We study the interplay of superconductivity and a wide spectrum of critical (multifractal) wave functions ("spectrum-wide quantum criticality," SWQC) in the one-dimensional Aubry-Andr\'e and power-law random-banded matrix models with attractive interactions, using self-consistent BCS theory. We find that SWQC survives the incorporation of attractive interactions at the Anderson localization transition, while the pairing amplitude is maximized near this transition in both models. We overview the concept of dynamical phase transitions in isolated quantum systems quenched out of equilibrium. We focus on non-equilibrium transitions characterized by an order parameter, which features qualitatively distinct temporal behaviour on the two sides of a certain dynamical critical point. Dynamical phase transitions are currently mostly understood as long-lived prethermal phenomena in a regime where inelastic collisions are incapable to thermalize the system. The latter enables the dynamics to substain phases that explicitly break detailed balance and therefore cannot be encompassed by traditional thermodynamics. Our presentation covers both cold atoms as well as condensed matter systems. We revisit a broad plethora of platforms exhibiting pre-thermal DPTs, which become theoretically tractable in a certain limit, such as for a large number of particles, large number of order parameter components, or large spatial dimension. The systems we explore include, among others, quantum magnets with collective interactions, $\phi^4$ quantum field theories, and Fermi-Hubbard models. The spatial modulation of the Fermi velocity for gapless Dirac electrons in quantum materials is mathematically equivalent to the problem of massless fermions on a certain class of curved spacetime manifolds. We study null geodesic lensing through these manifolds, which are dominated by curvature singularities, such as nematic singularity walls (where the Dirac cone flattens along one direction). Null geodesics lens across these walls, but do so by perfectly collimating to a local transit angle. Nevertheless, nematic walls can trap null geodesics into stable or metastable orbits characterized by repeated transits. We review recent numerical studies of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermion theories that exhibit an unusual mechanism of topological protection against Anderson localization. These describe surface-state quasiparticles of time-reversal invariant, three-dimensional (3D) topological superconductors (TSCs), subject to the effects of quenched disorder. Numerics reveal a surprising connection between 3D TSCs in classes AIII, CI, and DIII, and 2D quantum Hall effects in classes A, C, and D. Conventional arguments derived from the non-linear $\sigma$-model picture imply that most TSC surface states should Anderson localize for arbitrarily weak disorder (CI, AIII), or exhibit weak antilocalizing behavior (DIII). The numerical studies reviewed here instead indicate spectrum-wide surface quantum criticality, characterized by robust eigenstate multifractality throughout the surface-state energy spectrum. In other words, there is an "energy stack" of critical wave functions. For class AIII, multifractal eigenstate and conductance analysis reveals identical statistics for states throughout the stack, consistent with the class A integer quantum-Hall plateau transition (QHPT). Class CI TSCs exhibit surface stacks of class C spin QHPT states. Critical stacking of a third kind, possibly associated to the class D thermal QHPT, is identified for nematic velocity disorder of a single Majorana cone in class DIII. The Dirac theories studied here can be represented as perturbed 2D Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten sigma models; the numerical results link these to Pruisken models with the topological angle $\vartheta = \pi$. We show that a Weyl superconductor can absorb light via a novel surface-to-bulk mechanism, which we dub the topological anomalous skin effect. This occurs even in the absence of disorder for a single-band superconductor, and is facilitated by the topological splitting of the Hilbert space into bulk and chiral surface Majorana states. In the clean limit, the effect manifests as a characteristic absorption peak due to surface-bulk transitions. We also consider the effects of bulk disorder, using the Keldysh response theory. For weak disorder, the bulk response is reminiscent of the Mattis-Bardeen result for $s$-wave superconductors, with strongly suppressed spectral weight below twice the pairing energy, despite the presence of gapless Weyl points. For stronger disorder, the bulk response becomes more Drude-like and the $p$-wave features disappear. We show that the surface-bulk signal survives when combined with the bulk in the presence of weak disorder. The topological anomalous skin effect can therefore serve as a fingerprint for Weyl superconductivity. We study quantum quenches of helical liquids with spin-flip inelastic scattering. Counterpropagating charge packets in helical edges can be created by an ultrashort electric pulse applied across a 2D topological insulator. Localized "hot spots" that form due to scattering enable two types of strongly nonlinear wave dynamics. First, propagating packets develop self-focusing shock fronts. Second, colliding packets with opposite charge can exhibit near-perfect retroreflection, despite strong dissipation. As a potential window on transitions out of the ergodic, many-body-delocalized phase, we study the dephasing of weakly disordered, quasi-one-dimensional fermion systems due to a diffusive, non-Markovian noise bath. Such a bath is self-generated by the fermions, via inelastic scattering mediated by short-ranged interactions. We calculate the dephasing of weak localization perturbatively through second order in the bath coupling. However, the expansion breaks down at long times, and is not stabilized by including a mean-field decay rate, signaling a failure of the self-consistent Born approximation. We also consider a many-channel quantum wire where short-ranged, spin-exchange interactions coexist with screened Coulomb interactions. We calculate the dephasing rate, treating the short-ranged interactions perturbatively and the Coulomb interaction exactly. The latter provides a physical infrared regularization that stabilizes perturbation theory at long times, giving the first controlled calculation of quasi-1D dephasing due to diffusive noise. At first order in the diffusive bath coupling, we find an enhancement of the dephasing rate, but at second order we find a rephasing contribution. Our results differ qualitatively from those obtained via self-consistent calculations and are relevant in two different contexts. First, in the search for precursors to many-body localization in the ergodic phase. Second, our results provide a mechanism for the enhancement of dephasing at low temperatures in spin SU(2)-symmetric quantum wires, beyond the Altshuler-Aronov-Khmelnitsky result. The enhancement is possible due to the amplification of the triplet-channel interaction strength, and provides an additional mechanism that could contribute to the experimentally observed low-temperature saturation of the dephasing time., Comment: 31 pages, 29 figures; published version

We propose a defect-to-edge topological quantum quench protocol that can efficiently inject electric charge from defect-core states into a chiral edge current of an induced Chern insulator. The initial state of the system is assumed to be a Mott insulator, with electrons bound to topological defects that are pinned by disorder. We show that a "critical quench" to a Chern insulator mass of order the Mott gap shunts charge from defects to the edge, while a second stronger quench can trap it there and boost the edge velocity, creating a controllable current. We apply this idea to a skyrmion charge in the $\nu = 0$ quantum Hall antiferromagnet in graphene, where the quench into the Chern insulator could be accomplished via Floquet driving with circularly polarized light., Comment: 6 pages including refs, 4 figures

Atomically precise epitaxial structures are unique systems for tunneling spectroscopy that minimize extrinsic effects of disorder. We present a systematic tunneling spectroscopy study, over a broad doping, temperature, and bias range, in epitaxial c-axis La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ heterostructures. The behavior of these superconductor/insulator/superconductor (SIS) devices is unusual. Down to 20 mK there is complete suppression of c-axis Josephson critical current with a barrier of only 2 nm of La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$, and the zero-bias conductance remains at 20-30% of the normal-state conductance, implying a substantial population of in-gap states. Tunneling spectra show greatly suppressed coherence peaks. As the temperature is raised, the superconducting gap fills in rather than closing at $T_{c}$. For all doping levels, the spectra show an inelastic tunneling feature at $\sim$ 80 meV, suppressed as $T$ exceeds $T_{c}$. These nominally simple epitaxial cuprate junctions deviate markedly from expectations based on the standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

In the absence of spin-orbit coupling, the conventional dogma of Anderson localization asserts that all states localize in two dimensions, with a glaring exception: the quantum Hall plateau transition (QHPT). In that case, the localization length diverges and interference-induced quantum-critical spatial fluctuations appear at all length scales. Normally QHPT states occur only at isolated energies; accessing them therefore requires fine-tuning of the electron density or magnetic field. In this paper we show that QHPT states can be realized throughout an energy continuum, i.e. as an "energy stack" of critical states wherein each state in the stack exhibits QHPT phenomenology. The stacking occurs without fine-tuning at the surface of a class AIII topological phase, where it is protected by U(1) and (anomalous) chiral or time-reversal symmetries. Spectrum-wide criticality is diagnosed by comparing numerics to universal results for the longitudinal Landauer conductance and wave function multifractality at the QHPT. Results are obtained from an effective 2D surface field theory and from a bulk 3D lattice model. We demonstrate that the stacking of quantum-critical QHPT states is a robust phenomenon that occurs for AIII topological phases with both odd and even winding numbers. We study the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth in a 3D topological superconductor (TSC), incorporating the paramagnetic current due to the surface states. A TSC is predicted to host a gapless 2D surface Majorana fluid. In addition to the bulk-dominated London response, we identify a $T^3$ power-law-in-temperature contribution from the surface, valid in the low-temperature limit. Our system is fully gapped in the bulk, and should be compared to bulk nodal superconductivity, which also exhibits power-law behavior. Dilute impurities and growth conditions can drastically affect the transport properties of TiSe$_2$, especially below the charge density wave transition. In this paper, we discuss the effects of cooling rate, annealing time and annealing temperature on the transport properties of TiSe$_2$: slow cooling of polycrystalline TiSe$_2$ post-synthesis drastically increases the low temperature resistivity, which is in contrast to the metallic behavior of single-crystalline TiSe$_2$ due to charge doping from the residual iodine transport agent. A logarithmic increase of resistivity upon cooling and negative magnetoresistance with a sharp cusp around zero field are observed for the first time for the polycrystalline TiSe$_2$ samples, pointing to weak-localization effects due to low dimensionality. Annealing at low temperatures has a similar, but less drastic effect. Furthermore, rapid quenching of the polycrystalline samples from high temperatures freezes in disorder, leading to a decrease in the low temperature resistivity., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We numerically study weak, random, spatial velocity modulation ["quenched gravitational disorder" (QGD)] in two-dimensional massless Dirac materials. QGD couples to the spatial components of the stress tensor; the gauge-invariant disorder strength is encoded in the quenched curvature. Although expected to produce negligible effects, wave interference due to QGD transforms all but the lowest-energy states into a quantum-critical "stack" with universal, energy-independent spatial fluctuations. We study five variants of velocity disorder, incorporating three different local deformations of the Dirac cone: flattening or steepening of the cone, pseudospin rotations, and nematic deformation (squishing) of the cone. QGD should arise for nodal excitations in the $d$-wave cuprate superconductors (SCs), due to gap inhomogeneity. Our results may explain the division between low-energy "coherent" (plane-wave-like) and finite-energy "incoherent" (spatially inhomogeneous) excitations in the SC and pseudogap regimes. The model variant that best matches the cuprate phenomenology possesses quenched random pseudospin rotations and nematic fluctuations. This model variant and another with pure nematic randomness exhibit a robust energy swath of stacked critical states, the width of which increases with increasing disorder strength. By contrast, quenched fluctuations that isotropically flatten or steepen the Dirac cone tend to produce strong disorder effects, with more rarified wave functions at low- and high-energies. Particle fractionalization is believed to orchestrate the physics of many strongly correlated systems, yet its direct experimental detection remains a challenge. We propose a simple measurement for an ultracold matter system, in which correlations in initially decoupled 1D chains are imprinted via quantum quench upon two-dimensional Dirac fermions. Luttinger liquid correlations launch relativistic "fractionalization waves" along the chains, while coupling noninteracting chains induces perpendicular dispersion. We present numerical evidence that most two-dimensional surface states of a bulk topological superconductor (TSC) sit at an integer quantum Hall plateau transition. We study TSC surface states in class CI with quenched disorder. Low-energy (finite-energy) surface states were expected to be critically delocalized (Anderson localized). In two dimensions (2D), dephasing by a bath cuts off Anderson localization that would otherwise occur at any energy density for fermions with disorder. For an isolated system with short-range interactions, the system can be its own bath, exhibiting diffusive (non-Markovian) thermal density fluctuations. We recast the dephasing of weak localization due to a diffusive bath as a self-interacting polymer loop. We investigate the critical behavior of the loop in $d=4-\epsilon$ dimensions, and find a nontrivial fixed point corresponding to a temperature $T^* \sim \epsilon >0$ where the dephasing time diverges. Assuming that this fixed point survives to $\epsilon=2$, we associate it to a possible instability of the ergodic phase. Our approach may open a new line of attack against the problem of the ergodic to many-body-localized phase transition in $d > 1$ spatial dimensions., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We investigate topological Cooper pairing, including gapless Weyl and fully gapped class DIII superconductivity, in a three-dimensional doped Luttinger semimetal. The latter describes effective spin-3/2 carriers near a quadratic band touching and captures the normal-state properties of the 227 pyrochlore iridates and half-Heusler alloys. Electron-electron interactions may favor non-$s$-wave pairing in such systems, including even-parity $d$-wave pairing. We argue that the lowest energy $d$-wave pairings are always of complex (e.g., $d + i d$) type, with nodal Weyl quasiparticles. This implies $\varrho(E) \sim |E|^2$ scaling of the density of states (DoS) at low energies in the clean limit, or $\varrho(E) \sim |E|$ over a wide critical region in the presence of disorder. The latter is consistent with the $T$-dependence of the penetration depth in the half-Heusler compound YPtBi. We enumerate routes for experimental verification, including specific heat, thermal conductivity, NMR relaxation time, and topological Fermi arcs. Nucleation of any $d$-wave pairing also causes a small lattice distortion and induces an $s$-wave component; this gives a route to strain-engineer exotic $s+d$ pairings. We also consider odd-parity, fully gapped $p$-wave superconductivity. For hole doping, a gapless Majorana fluid with cubic dispersion appears at the surface. We invent a generalized surface model with $\nu$-fold dispersion to simulate a bulk with winding number $\nu$. Using exact diagonalization, we show that disorder drives the surface into a critically delocalized phase, with universal DoS and multifractal scaling consistent with the conformal field theory (CFT) SO($n$)${}_\nu$, where $n \rightarrow 0$ counts replicas. We derive the finite temperature Keldysh response theory for interacting fermions in the presence of quenched disorder, as applicable to any of the 10 Altland-Zirnbauer classes in an Anderson delocalized phase with at least a U(1) continuous symmetry. In this formulation of the interacting Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model, the statistics of one-body wave functions are encoded by the constrained matrix field, while physical correlations follow from the hydrodynamic density or spin response field, which decouples the interactions. Integrating out the matrix field first, we obtain weak (anti)localization and Altshuler-Aronov quantum conductance corrections from the hydrodynamic response function. This procedure automatically incorporates the correct infrared physics, and in particular gives the Altshuler-Aronov-Khmelnitsky (AAK) equations for dephasing of weak (anti)localization due to electron-electron collisions. We explicate the method by deriving known quantum corrections in two dimensions for the symplectic metal class AII, as well as the spin-SU(2) invariant superconductor classes C and CI. We show that conductance corrections due to the special modes at zero energy in nonstandard classes are automatically cut off by temperature, as previously expected, while the Wigner-Dyson class Cooperon modes that persist to all energies are cut by dephasing. We also show that for short-ranged interactions, the standard self-consistent solution for the dephasing rate is equivalent to a diagrammatic summation via the self-consistent Born approximation. This should be compared to the AAK solution for long-ranged Coulomb interactions, which exploits the Markovian noise correlations induced by thermal fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. We compute the effects of generic short-range interactions on gapless electrons residing at the quantum critical point separating a two-dimensional Dirac semimetal (DSM) and a symmetry-preserving band insulator (BI). The electronic dispersion at this critical point is anisotropic ($E_{\mathbf k}=\pm \sqrt{v^2 k^2_x + b^2 k^{2n}_y}$ with $n=2$), which results in unconventional scaling of physical observables. Due to the vanishing density of states ($\varrho(E) \sim |E|^{1/n}$), this anisotropic semimetal (ASM) is stable against weak short-range interactions. However, for stronger interactions the direct DSM-BI transition can either $(i)$ become a first-order transition, or $(ii)$ get avoided by an intervening broken-symmetry phase (BSP). We perform a renormalization group analysis by perturbing away from the one-dimensional limit with the small parameter $\epsilon = 1/n$, augmented with a $1/n$ expansion (parametrically suppressing quantum fluctuations in higher dimension). We identify charge density wave (CDW), antiferromagnet (AFM) and singlet s-wave superconductor as the three dominant candidates for the BSP. The onset of any such order at strong coupling $(\sim \epsilon)$ takes place through a continuous quantum phase transition across multicritical point. We also present the phase diagram of an extended Hubbard model for the ASM, obtained via the controlled deformation of its counterpart in one dimension. The latter displays spin-charge separation and instabilities to CDW, spin density wave, and Luther-Emery liquid phases at arbitrarily weak coupling. The spin density wave and Luther-Emery liquid phases deform into pseudospin SU(2)-symmetric quantum critical points separating the ASM from the AFM and superconducting orders, respectively. We study the Majorana surface states of higher-spin topological superconductors (TSCs) that could be realized in ultracold atomic systems or doped semimetals with spin-orbit coupling. As a paradigmatic example, we consider a model with p-wave pairing of spin-3/2 fermions that generalizes ${}^3\text{He-}B$. This model has coexisting linear and cubic dispersing Majorana surface bands. We show that these are unstable to interactions, which can generate a spontaneous surface thermal quantum Hall effect (TQHE). By contrast, nonmagnetic quenched disorder induces a surface conformal field theory (CFT) that is stable against weak interactions: topological protection is enhanced by disorder. Gapless surface states of higher-spin TSCs could therefore be robustly realized in solid state systems, where disorder is inevitable. The surface CFT is characterized by universal signatures that depend only on the bulk topological winding number, and include power-law scaling of the density of states, a universal multifractal spectrum of local density of states fluctuations, and a quantized ratio of the longitudinal thermal conductivity $\kappa_{xx}$ divided by temperature $T$. By contrast, $\kappa_{xx}/T$ for the clean surface without TQHE order would diverge as $T \rightarrow 0$. We study the preparation (pump) and the detection (probe) of far-from-equilibrium BCS superconductor dynamics in THz pump-probe experiments. In a recent experiment [R. Matsunaga, Y. I. Hamada, K. Makise, Y. Uzawa, H. Terai, Z. Wang, and R. Shimano, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 111}, 057002 (2013)], an intense monocycle THz pulse with center frequency $\omega \simeq \Delta$ was injected into a superconductor with BCS gap $\Delta$; the subsequent post-pump evolution was detected via the optical conductivity. It was argued that nonlinear coupling of the pump to the Anderson pseudospins of the superconductor induces coherent dynamics of the Higgs (amplitude) mode $\Delta(t)$. We validate this picture in a two-dimensional BCS model with a combination of exact numerics and the Lax reduction method, and we compute the nonequilibrium phase diagram as a function of the pump intensity. The main effect of the pump is to scramble the orientations of Anderson pseudospins along the Fermi surface by twisting them in the $xy$-plane. We show that more intense pump pulses can induce a far-from-equilibrium phase of gapless superconductivity ("phase I"), originally predicted in the context of interaction quenches in ultracold atoms. We show that the THz pump method can reach phase I at much lower energy densities than an interaction quench, and we demonstrate that Lax reduction (tied to the integrability of the BCS Hamiltonian) provides a general quantitative tool for computing coherent BCS dynamics. We report the enhancement of the thermoelectric power (TEP) in graphene with extremely low disorder. At high temperature we observe that the TEP is substantially larger than the prediction of the Mott relation, approaching to the hydrodynamic limit due to strong inelastic scattering among the charge carriers. However, closer to room temperature the inelastic carrier-optical-phonon scattering becomes more significant and limits the TEP below the hydrodynamic prediction. We study the electric and thermal transport of the Dirac carriers in monolayer graphene using the Boltzmann-equation approach. Motivated by recent thermopower measurements [F. Ghahari, H.-Y.~Xie, T. Taniguchi, K. Watanabe, M.~S.~Foster, and P.~Kim, Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 116}, 136802 (2016)], we consider the effects of quenched disorder, Coulomb interactions, and electron--optical-phonon scattering. Via an unbiased numerical solution to the Boltzmann equation we calculate the electrical conductivity, thermopower, and electronic component of the thermal conductivity, and discuss the validity of Mott's formula and of the Wiedemann-Franz law. An analytical solution for the disorder-only case shows that screened Coulomb impurity scattering, although elastic, violates the Wiedemann-Franz law even at low temperature. For the combination of carrier-carrier Coulomb and short-ranged impurity scattering, we observe the crossover from the interaction-limited (hydrodynamic) regime to the disorder-limited (Fermi-liquid) regime. In the former, the thermopower and the thermal conductivity follow the results anticipated by the relativistic hydrodynamic theory. On the other hand, we find that optical phonons become nonnegligible at relatively low temperatures and that the induced electron thermopower violates Mott's formula. Combining all of these scattering mechanisms, we obtain the thermopower that quantitatively coincides with the experimental data., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

The combination of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and potential disorder induces a random current operator for the edge states of a 2D topological insulator. We prove that charge transport through such an edge is ballistic at any temperature, with or without Luttinger liquid interactions. The solution exploits a mapping to a spin 1/2 in a time-dependent field that preserves the projection along one randomly undulating component (integrable dynamics). We show that two-terminal transport can measure the Luttinger liquid (LL) parameter $K$, in helical LLs at the edges of two dimensional topological insulators (TIs) with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We consider a Coulomb drag geometry with two coplanar TIs and short-ranged spin-flip inter-edge scattering. Current injected into one edge loop induces circulation in the second, which floats without leads. In the low-temperature ($T \rightarrow 0$) perfect drag regime, the conductance is $(e^2/h)(2 K + 1)/(K + 1)$. At higher $T$ we predict a conductivity $\sim T^{-4K+3}$. We investigate radio-frequency (rf) spectroscopy, metal-to-superconductor tunneling, and ARPES as probes of isolated out-of-equilibrium quantum systems, and examine the crucial role played by the nonequilibrium distribution function. As an example, we focus on the induced topological time-periodic (Floquet) phase in a 2D $p+ip$ superfluid, following an instantaneous quench of the coupling strength. The post-quench Cooper pairs occupy a linear combination of "ground" and "excited" Floquet states, with coefficients determined by the distribution function. While the Floquet bandstructure exhibits a single avoided crossing relative to the equilibrium case, the distribution function shows a population inversion of the Floquet bands at low energies. For a realization in ultracold atoms, these two features compensate, producing a bulk average rf signal that is well-captured by a quasi-equilibrium approximation. In particular, the rf spectrum shows a robust gap. The single crossing occurs because the quench-induced Floquet phase belongs to a particular class of soliton dynamics for the BCS equation. The population inversion is a consequence of this, and ensures the conservation of the pseudospin winding number. As a comparison, we compute the rf signal when only the lower Floquet band is occupied; in this case, the gap disappears for strong quenches. The tunneling signal in a solid state realization is ignorant of the distribution function, and can show wildly different behaviors. We also examine rf, tunneling, and ARPES for weak quenches, such that the resulting topological steady-state is characterized by a constant nonequilibrium order parameter. In a system with a boundary, tunneling reveals the Majorana edge states. We study the dynamic response of an s-wave BCS-BEC (atomic-molecular) condensate to detuning quenches within the two channel model beyond the weak coupling BCS limit. At long times after the quench, the condensate ends up in one of three main asymptotic states (nonequilibrium phases), which are qualitatively similar to those in other fermionic condensates defined by a global complex order parameter. In phase I the amplitude of the order parameter vanishes as a power law, in phase II it goes to a nonzero constant, and in phase III it oscillates persistently. We construct exact quench phase diagrams that predict the asymptotic state (including the many-body wavefunction) depending on the initial and final detunings and on the Feshbach resonance width. Outside of the weak coupling regime, both the mechanism and the time dependence of the relaxation of the amplitude of the order parameter in phases I and II are modified. Also, quenches from arbitrarily weak initial to sufficiently strong final coupling do not produce persistent oscillations in contrast to the behavior in the BCS regime. The most remarkable feature of coherent condensate dynamics in various fermion superfluids is an effective reduction in the number of dynamic degrees of freedom as the evolution time goes to infinity. As a result, the long time dynamics can be fully described in terms of just a few new collective dynamical variables governed by the same Hamiltonian only with "renormalized" parameters. Combining this feature with the integrability of the underlying (e.g. the two channel) model, we develop and consistently present a general method that explicitly obtains the exact asymptotic state of the system., Comment: 46 pages, 26 figures

We argue that surface spin and thermal conductivities of three-dimensional topological superconductors are universal and topologically quantized at low temperature. For a bulk winding number $\nu$, there are $|\nu|$ "colors" of surface Majorana fermions. Localization corrections to surface transport coefficients vanish due to time-reversal symmetry (TRS). We argue that Altshuler-Aronov interaction corrections vanish because TRS forbids color or spin Friedel oscillations. We confirm this within a perturbative expansion in the interactions, and to lowest order in a large-$|\nu|$ expansion. We consider the interplay of disorder and interactions upon the gapless surface states of 3D topological superconductors. The combination of topology and superconducting order inverts the action of time-reversal symmetry, so that extrinsic time-reversal invariant surface perturbations appear only as "pseudomagnetic" fields (abelian and non-abelian vector potentials, which couple to spin and valley currents). The main effect of disorder is to induce multifractal scaling in surface state wavefunctions. These critically delocalized, yet strongly inhomogeneous states renormalize interaction matrix elements relative to the clean system. We compute the enhancement or suppression of interaction scaling dimensions due to the disorder exactly, using conformal field theory. We determine the conditions under which interactions remain irrelevant in the presence of disorder for symmetry classes AIII and DIII. In the limit of large topological winding numbers (many surface valleys), we show that the effective field theory takes the form of a Finkel'stein non-linear sigma model, augmented by the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten term. The sigma model incorporates interaction effects to all orders, and provides a framework for a controlled perturbative expansion; the inverse spin or thermal conductance is the small parameter. For class DIII we show that interactions are always irrelevant, while in class AIII there is a finite window of stability, controlled by the disorder. We numerically investigate critically delocalized wavefunctions in models of 2D Dirac fermions, subject to vector potential disorder. These describe the surface states of 3D topological superconductors, and can also be realized through long-range correlated bond randomness in artificial materials like molecular graphene. A frozen regime can occur for strong disorder in these systems, wherein a single wavefunction presents a few localized peaks separated by macroscopic distances. Despite this rarefied spatial structure, we find robust correlations between eigenstates at different energies, at both weak and strong disorder. The associated level statistics are always approximately Wigner-Dyson. The system shows generalized Chalker (quantum critical) scaling, even when individual states are quasilocalized in space. We confirm analytical predictions for the density of states and multifractal spectra. For a single Dirac valley, we establish that finite energy states show universal multifractal spectra consistent with the integer quantum Hall plateau transition. A single Dirac fermion at finite energy can therefore behave as a Quantum Hall critical metal. For the case of two valleys and non-abelian disorder, we verify predictions of conformal field theory. Ultracold atomic gases in two dimensions tuned close to a p-wave Feshbach resonance were expected to exhibit topological superfluidity, but these were found to be experimentally unstable. We show that one can induce a topological Floquet superfluid if weakly interacting atoms are brought suddenly close ("quenched") to such a resonance, in the time before the instability kicks in. The resulting superfluid possesses Majorana edge modes, yet differs from a conventional Floquet system as it is not driven externally. We study the non-adiabatic dynamics of a 2D p+ip superfluid following a quantum quench of the BCS coupling constant. The model describes a topological superconductor with a non-trivial BCS (trivial BEC) phase appearing at weak (strong) coupling strengths. We extract the exact long-time asymptotics of the order parameter \Delta(t) by exploiting the integrability of the classical p-wave Hamiltonian, which we establish via a Lax construction. Three different types of behavior can occur depending upon the strength and direction of the quench. In phase I, the order parameter asymptotes to zero. In phase II, \Delta(t) goes to a non-zero constant. Phase III is characterized by persistent oscillations of \Delta(t). For quenches within I and II, we determine the topological character of the asymptotic states. We show that two different formulations of the bulk topological winding number, although equivalent in the ground state, must be regarded as independent out of equilibrium. The first number Q characterizes the Anderson pseudospin texture of the initial state; we show that it is conserved. For non-zero Q, this leads to the prediction of a "gapless topological" state when \Delta(t) goes to zero. The presence or absence of Majorana edge modes in a sample with a boundary is encoded in the second winding number W, formulated in terms of the retarded Green's function. We show that W can change following a quench across the quantum critical point. We discuss the implications for the (dis)appearance of Majorana edge modes. Finally, we show that the parity of zeros in the bulk out-of-equilibrium Cooper pair distribution function constitutes a Z2-valued quantum number, which is non-zero whenever W differs from Q. We show that arbitrarily weak interparticle interactions destabilize the surface states of 3D topological superconductors with spin SU(2) invariance (symmetry class CI), in the presence of non-magnetic disorder. The conduit for the instability is disorder-induced wavefunction multifractality. We argue that time-reversal symmetry breaks spontaneously at the surface, so that topologically-protected states do not exist for this class. We compute the multifractal spectra associated to local density of states (LDOS) fluctuations due to weak quenched disorder, for a single Dirac fermion in two spatial dimensions. Our results are relevant to the surfaces of Z_2 topological insulators such as Bi_2Se_3 and Bi_2Te_3, where LDOS modulations can be directly probed via scanning tunneling microscopy. We find a qualitative difference in spectra obtained for magnetic versus non-magnetic disorder. Randomly polarized magnetic impurities induce quadratic multifractality at first order in the impurity density; by contrast, no operator exhibits multifractal scaling at this order for a non-magnetic impurity profile. For the time-reversal invariant case, we compute the first non-trivial multifractal correction, which appears at two loops (impurity density squared). We compute the dynamics of localized excitations produced by a quantum quench in the spin 1/2 XXZ chain. Using numerics combining the density matrix renormalization group and exact time evolution, as well as analytical arguments, we show that fractionalization due to interactions in the pre-quench state gives rise to "ultrarelativistic" density waves that travel at the maximum band velocity. The system is initially prepared in the ground state of the chain within the gapless XY phase, which admits a Luttinger liquid (LL) description at low energies and long wavelengths. The Hamiltonian is then suddenly quenched to a band insulator, after which the chain evolves unitarily. Through the gapped dispersion of the insulator spectrum, the post-quench dynamics serve as a "velocity microscope," revealing initial state particle correlations via space time density propagation. We study a quantum quench in a 1D system possessing Luttinger liquid (LL) and Mott insulating ground states before and after the quench, respectively. We show that the quench induces power law amplification in time of any particle density inhomogeneity in the initial LL ground state. The scaling exponent is set by the fractionalization of the LL quasiparticle number relative to the insulator. As an illustration, we consider the traveling density waves launched from an initial localized density bump. We revisit the problem of wavefunction statistics at the Anderson metal-insulator transition (MIT) of non-interacting electrons in d > 2 spatial dimensions. At the transition, the complex spatial structure of the critical wavefunctions is reflected in the non-linear behavior of the multifractal spectrum of generalized inverse participation ratios (IPRs). Beyond the crossover from narrow to broad IPR statistics, which always occurs for sufficiently large moments of the wavefunction amplitude, the spectrum obtained from a typical wavefunction associated with a particular disorder realization differs markedly from that obtained from the disorder-averaged IPRs. This phenomenon is known as the termination of the multifractal spectrum. We provide a field theoretical derivation for the termination of the typical multifractal spectrum, by combining the non-linear sigma model framework, conventionally used to access the MIT in d = 2 + epsilon dimensions, with a functional renormalization group (FRG) technique. The FRG method deployed here was originally pioneered to study the properties of the two-dimensional (2D) random phase XY model [D. Carpentier and P. Le Doussal, Nucl. Phys. B 588, 565 (2000)]. The same method was used to demonstrate the termination of the multifractal spectrum in the very special problem of 2D Dirac fermions subject to a random Abelian vector potential. Our result shows that the typical multifractal wavefunction spectrum and its termination can be obtained at a generic Anderson localization transition in d > 2, within the standard field theoretical framework of the non-linear sigma model, when combined with the FRG., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

We compute the electronic component of the thermal conductivity (TC) and the thermoelectric power (TEP) of monolayer graphene, within the hydrodynamic regime, taking into account the slow rate of carrier population imbalance relaxation. Interband electron-hole generation and recombination processes are inefficient due to the non-decaying nature of the relativistic energy spectrum. As a result, a population imbalance of the conduction and valence bands is generically induced upon the application of a thermal gradient. We show that the thermoelectric response of a graphene monolayer depends upon the ratio of the sample length to an intrinsic length scale l_Q, set by the imbalance relaxation rate. At the same time, we incorporate the crucial influence of the metallic contacts required for the thermopower measurement (under open circuit boundary conditions), since carrier exchange with the contacts also relaxes the imbalance. These effects are especially pronounced for clean graphene, where the thermoelectric transport is limited exclusively by intercarrier collisions. For specimens shorter than l_Q, the population imbalance extends throughout the sample; the TC and TEP asymptote toward their zero imbalance relaxation limits. In the opposite limit of a graphene slab longer than l_Q, at non-zero doping the TC and TEP approach intrinsic values characteristic of the infinite imbalance relaxation limit. Samples of intermediate (long) length in the doped (undoped) case are predicted to exhibit an inhomogeneous temperature profile, whilst the TC and TEP grow linearly with the system size. In all cases except for the shortest devices, we develop a picture of bulk electron and hole number currents that flow between thermally conductive leads, where steady-state recombination and generation processes relax the accumulating imbalance., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We analyze the competing effects of moderate to strong Coulomb electron-electron interactions and weak quenched disorder in graphene. Using a one-loop renormalization group calculation controlled within the large-N approximation, we demonstrate that, at successively lower energy (temperature or chemical potential) scales, a type of non-Abelian vector potential disorder always asserts itself as the dominant elastic scattering mechanism for generic short-ranged microscopic defect distributions. Vector potential disorder is tied to both elastic lattice deformations ("ripples") and topological lattice defects. We identify several well-defined scaling regimes, for which we provide scaling predictions for the electrical conductivity and thermopower, valid when the inelastic lifetime due to interactions exceeds the elastic lifetime due to disorder. Coulomb interaction effects should figure strongly into the physics of suspended graphene films, where rs > 1; we expect vector potential disorder to play an important role in the description of transport in such films., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures
