The 4.5 km deep IDDP-2 drill hole was drilled at Reykjanes, Iceland, in an active seawater-recharged hydrothermal system on the landward extension the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Drilling targeted a well-defined hydrothermal up-flow zone feeding the Reykjanes geothermal reservoir, which produces fluids compositionally equivalent to basalt-hosted deep sea hydrothermal vents. Spot cores recovered from depths between 3,648 to 4,659 m depths consist of pervasively altered sheeted diabase dikes. The shallowest core has an alteration mineral assemblage similar to the producing geothermal reservoir but is being overprinted by the underlying Hornblende Zone assemblage dominated by labradorite and hornblende. The deepest cored section (4,634–4,659 m) retains a diabasic texture, but all primary minerals are replaced or have changed composition. Plagioclase ranges from An30 to An99 and igneous augite is replaced by intergrown hornblende, clinopyroxene, and orthopyroxene. Hydrothermal biotite and potassium feldspar formed locally due to reaction with a phase-separated brine, indicated by co-existing vapor-rich and salt + vapor-rich fluid inclusions. Seawater-derived supercritical hydrothermal fluid entering the bottom of the bore hole actively phase separates due pressure drop controlled by the fluid levels in the drill hole. Felsic veins, present in trace amounts, record a continuous transition from magmatic to hydrothermal conditions, including incipient hydrous melting. The vertical changes observed in mineralogy and mineral chemistry indicate that fluids from the deep high temperature reaction zone can undergo significant cooling and reaction with host rocks along their path to the seafloor.

Within the context of a competitive UK Higher Education (HE) environment, this paper explores the transitions made by former or current practitioners who are now university academics, referred to in this study (and others) as 'pracademics'. Drawing together the concepts of pracademia, academic selves and professional identity, this paper makes a tri-fold contribution. First, this case study examines pracademics' perceptions from a post-1992, UK-based higher education institution (HEI) through collaborative reflexivity. Secondly, it suggests how pracademics' professional self-identities can be fluid and context-dependent. Thirdly, it explores affinities and tensions between academia and practice, and identifies opportunities for building links between them. In doing so, the research makes a number of specific recommendations. The authors advocate for the recruitment of academics with practitioner experience and the facilitation of their effective transition into and within the HEI environment.

Objective: Opioid use and the risk of opioid overdose are growing public health concerns for college-aged adults. Naloxone can temporarily reverse opioid overdoses, but only if easily accessible. On most college campuses, "blue light" phones (BLPs)--call boxes topped with a blue light--offer visible access to emergency services. We hypothesized that BLPs would provide potential naloxone access points. Participants: A major university campus in Los Angeles, CA. Methods: BLP locations were obtained using Google Maps, and the area of campus within a set distance to each BLP calculated. To model effects of loss or diversion, we simulated the random loss of various BLPs. Results: Placing naloxone kits at the 59 BLP locations could provide access within 100 m to 91.5% of the campus. With loss of half of the BLPs, campus access remained above 70%. Conclusions: Naloxone at BLP locations could be accessed from almost all campus areas.

The aim of the Iceland Deep Drilling Project is to drill into supercritical geothermal systems and examine their economic potential. The exploratory well IDDP-2 was drilled in the Reykjanes geothermal field in SW Iceland, on the landward extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The Reykjanes geothermal field produces from a

Hydrothermal processes that lead to REE fractionation and redistribution are important for understanding water-rock interactions in geothermal energy resources and mineral deposits, and for determining how submarine hydrothermal activity affects the composition of oceanic crust. Much previous work on REE transport and deposition has focused on submarine hydrothermal vents. We report REE concentrations in boiled fluids sampled from five subaerial, basalt-hosted geothermal fields, and explore controls on aqueous REE concentrations by ligand complexation and mineral supersaturation. Samples that boiled at pressures between 0.8 and 2.83 MPa were obtained from the Reykjanes, Svartsengi, Hellisheidi, and Nesjavellir geothermal systems in Iceland, and the Puna geothermal system in Hawaii. For comparison, we also report REE concentrations in hydrothermal fluids from the sediment hosted submarine Middle Valley hydrothermal system, which boiled at >250 MPa. The pH(25°C) values of the sampled subaerial geothermal fluids range from 3.94 to 6.77, and Cl concentrations range from near seawater (502 mmol/kg) to dilute (1.9 mmol/kg). La, Ce and Eu are the only REE present at levels above 5 picomole/kg (pmol/kg) in the boiled geothermal fluids; and there are notable CI chondrite normalized La and Eu anomalies in the saline fluids. REE concentrations in Middle Valley hydrothermal fluids fall within the typical range reported for submarine hydrothermal fluids and have around two orders of magnitude higher REE than the boiled subaerial geothermal fluids. Bulk samples of precipitates in pipes from the Reykjanes geothermal system have detectable REE, confirming that downhole fluids have lost REE during boiling and production of fluids for geothermal energy. Isenthalpic boiling models show that the proportions of La and Eu chloride complexes increase relative to other aqueous species as boiling progresses, attenuating the incorporation of La and Eu into precipitated well scale solids. Fluorapatite is calculated to precipitate on boiling of low pH and saline fluids and calcite is calculated to precipitate from dilute and near-neutral pH fluids, and these minerals likely sequester REE in boiled subaerial fluids. Submarine hydrothermal fluids are constrained to boiling at higher temperatures than subaerial geothermal fluids owing to pressure from overlying cold seawater, therefore secondary minerals and solids that incorporate REE are not extensively precipitated and REE concentrations in the fluids are higher.

The Tatun geothermal system, located in northern Taiwan, is hosted by the Plio-Pleistocene Tatun volcanic group, consisting dominantly of andesitic lavas, domes and pyroclastic flows. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, geologic mapping, geochemical sampling, geophysical surveys, and the drilling of numerous exploration and temperature gradient wells were conducted at Tatun under the leadership of the Mineral Research and Service Organization (MRSO), the predecessor to the geothermal group at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). Deep (1–2 km) wells encountered commercial temperatures (200–300 °C) in the Matsao area, but these initial exploration efforts were discouraged by the presence of very acidic (pH < 3.5) and highly corrosive fluids. Numerous geoscience studies conducted over the past 15 years at Tatun have shown that the central portion of the system is dominated by corrosive volcanic fluids, as evidenced by abundant SO2 as well as HCl. More reduced gases are encountered on the flanks of the system, suggesting that water-rock interaction may have at least partly neutralized the volcanic-derived fluids on the margins of this geothermal system.

Characterizing the geothermal system at Surprise Valley (SV), northeastern California, is important for determining the sustainability of the energy resource, and mitigating hazards associated with hydrothermal eruptions that last occurred in 1951. Previous geochemical studies of the area attempted to reconcile different hot spring compositions on the western and eastern sides of the valley using scenarios of dilution, equilibration at low temperatures, surface evaporation, and differences in rock type along flow paths. These models were primarily supported using classical geothermometry methods, and generally assumed that fluids in the Lake City mud volcano area on the western side of the valley best reflect the composition of a deep geothermal fluid. In this contribution, we address controls on hot spring compositions using a different suite of geochemical tools, including optimized multicomponent geochemistry (GeoT) models, hot spring fluid major and trace element measurements, mineralogical observations, and stable isotope measurements of hot spring fluids and precipitated carbonates. We synthesize the results into a conceptual geochemical model of the Surprise Valley geothermal system, and show that high-temperature (quartz, Na/K, Na/K/Ca) classical geothermometers fail to predict maximum subsurface temperatures because fluids re-equilibrated at progressively lower temperatures during outflow, including in the Lake City area. We propose a model where hot spring fluids originate as a mixture between a deep thermal brine and modern meteoric fluids, with a seasonally variable mixing ratio. The deep brine has deuterium values at least 3 to 4‰ lighter than any known groundwater or high-elevation snow previously measured in and adjacent to SV, suggesting it was recharged during the Pleistocene when meteoric fluids had lower deuterium values. The deuterium values and compositional characteristics of the deep brine have only been identified in thermal springs and groundwater samples collected in proximity to structures that transmit thermal fluids, suggesting the brine may be thermal in nature. On the western side of the valley at the Lake City mud volcano, the deep brine-meteoric water mixture subsequently boils in the shallow subsurface, precipitates calcite, and re-equilibrates at about 130 °C. On the eastern side of the valley, meteoric fluid mixes to a greater extent with the deep brine, cools conductively without boiling, and the composition is modified as dissolved elements are sequestered by secondary minerals that form along the cooling and outflow path at temperatures

The region surrounding the Modoc Plateau, encompassing parts of northeastern California, southern Oregon, and northwestern Nevada, lies at an intersection between two tectonic provinces; the Basin and Range province and the Cascade volcanic arc. Both of these provinces have substantial geothermal resource base and resource potential. Geothermal systems with evidence of magmatic heat, associated with Cascade arc magmatism, typify the western side of the region. Systems on the eastern side of the region appear to be fault controlled with heat derived from high crustal heat flow, both of which are typical of the Basin and Range. As it has the potential to host Cascade arc-type geothermal resources, Basin and Range-type geothermal resources, and/or resources with characteristics of both provinces, and because there is relatively little current development, the Modoc Plateau region represents an intriguing potential for undiscovered geothermal resources. It remains unclear however, what specific set(s) of characteristics are diagnostic of Modoc-type geothermal systems and how or if those characteristics are distinct from Basin and Range-type or Cascade arc-type geothermal systems. In order to evaluate the potential for undiscovered geothermal resources in the Modoc area, we integrate a wide variety of existing data in order to evaluate geothermal resource potential and exploration risk utilizing ‘play-fairway’ analysis. We consider that the requisite parameters for hydrothermal circulation are: 1) heat that is sufficient to drive circulation, and 2) permeability that is sufficient to allow for fluid circulation in the subsurface. We synthesize data that indicate the extent and distribution of these parameters throughout the Modoc region. ‘Fuzzy logic’ is used to incorporate expert opinion into the utility of each dataset as an indicator of either heat or permeability, and thus geothermal favorability. The results identify several geothermal prospects, areas that are highly favorable for the occurrence of both heat and permeability. These are also areas where there is sufficient data coverage, quality, and consistency that the exploration risk is relatively low. These unknown, undeveloped, and under-developed prospects are well-suited for continued exploration efforts. The results also indicate to what degree the two ‘play-types,’ i.e. Cascade arc-type or Basin and Range-type, apply to each of the geothermal prospects, a useful guide in exploration efforts.

Geothermal resource exploration is generally limited to areas with surface expressions of thermal activity (fumaroles and hot springs), or relies on expensive geophysical exploration techniques. In this study, the hidden subsurface distribution of geothermal fluids has been identified using a free and publicly available water quality dataset from agricultural and domestic water wells in Surprise Valley, northeastern California. Thermally evolved waters in Surprise Valley have element ratios that vary in response to Ca carbonate and Mg silicate mineral precipitation, and have elevated total dissolved solids (TDS). The arid climate in Surprise Valley leads to surface water evaporation in a closed basin, producing high TDS Na-Cl-CO3-SO4 brines in three ephemeral alkali lakes and in shallow groundwater under elevated soil CO2 conditions. Evaporated fluids in Surprise Valley follow a chemical divide that leads to Ca carbonate and Mg silicate mineral precipitation. Plots of dissolved element ratios can be used to distinguish groundwater affected by evaporation from water affected by thermal water-rock interaction, however it is challenging to select components for plotting that best illustrate different fluid evolution mechanisms. Here, we use a principal component analysis of centered log-ratio transformed data, coupled with geochemical models of fluid evaporation and thermal mixing pathways, to identify components to plot that distinguish between groundwater samples influenced by evaporation from those influenced by thermal processes. We find that groundwater samples with a thermal signature come from wells that define a coherent, linear geographical distribution that closely matches the location of known and inferred faults. Modification of the general approach employed here provides promise for identifying blind geothermal resources in other locations, by applying low-cost geochemical modeling and statistical techniques to areas where large groundwater quality geochemical datasets are available.

The Iceland Deep Drilling Project research well RN-15/IDDP-2 at Reykjanes, Iceland, reached its target of supercritical conditions at a depth of 4.5 km in January 2017. After only 6 days of heating, the measured bottom hole temperature was 426 °C, and the fluid pressure was 34MPa. The southern tip of the Reykjanes peninsula is the landward extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in Iceland. Reykjanes is unique among Icelandic geothermal systems in that it is recharged by seawater, which has a critical point of 406 °C at 29.8MPa. The geologic setting and fluid characteristics at Reykjanes provide a geochemical analog that allows us to investigate the roots of a mid-ocean ridge submarine black smoker hydrothermal system. Drilling began with deepening an existing 2.5 km deep vertical production well (RN-15) to 3 km depth, followed by inclined drilling directed towards the main upflow zone of the system, for a total slant depth of 4659m (~4.5 km vertical depth). Total circulation losses of drilling fluid were encountered below 2.5 km, which could not be cured using lost circulation blocking materials or multiple cement jobs. Accordingly, drilling continued to the total depth without return of drill cuttings. Thirteen spot coring attempts were made below 3 km depth. Rocks in the cores are basalts and dolerites with alteration ranging from upper greenschist facies to amphibolite facies, suggesting that formation temperatures at depth exceed 450 °C. High-permeability circulation-fluid loss zones (feed points or feed zones) were detected at multiple depth levels below 3 km depth to bottom. The largest circulation losses (most permeable zones) occurred between the bottom of the casing and 3.4 km depth. Permeable zones encountered below 3.4 km accepted less than 5% of the injected water. Currently, the project is attempting soft stimulation to increase deep permeability. While it is too early to speculate on the energy potential of this well and its economics, the IDDP-2 is a milestone in the development of geothermal resources and the study of hydrothermal systems. It is the first well that successfully encountered supercritical hydrothermal conditions, with potential high-power output, and in which on-going hydrothermal metamorphism at amphibolite facies conditions can be observed. The next step will be to carry out flow testing and fluid sampling to determine the chemical and thermodynamic properties of the formation fluids.

Hydrothermal activity results in element exchanges between seawater and oceanic crust that contribute to many aspects of ocean chemistry; therefore, improving knowledge of the associated chemical processes is of global significance. Hydrothermally altered basaltic drill core samples from the seawater-recharged Reykjanes geothermal system in Iceland record elemental gains and losses similar to those observed in samples of hydrothermally altered oceanic crust. At Reykjanes, rocks originally emplaced on the seafloor were buried by continued volcanism and subsided to the current depths (>2250 m below surface). These rocks integrate temperature-dependent elemental gains and losses from multiple stages of hydrothermal alteration that correspond to chemical exchanges observed in rocks from different crustal levels of submarine hydrothermal systems. Specifically, these lithologies have gained U, Mg, Zn, and Pb and have lost K, Rb, Ba, Cu, and light rare earth elements (La through Eu). Alteration and elemental gains and losses in lithologies emplaced on the seafloor can only be explained by a complex multistage hydrothermal alteration history. Reykjanes dolerite intrusions record alteration similar to that reported for the sheeted dike section of several examples of oceanic crust. Specifically, Reykjanes dolerites have lost K, Rb, Ba, and Pb, and gained Cu. The Reykjanes drill core samples provide a unique analog for seawater-oceanic crust reactions actively occurring at high temperatures (275–345°C) beneath a seafloor hydrothermal system.

The wholerock major and trace element composition of drill cutting samples are compared to drill core samples from adjacent depths in the seawater recharged Reykjanes geothermal system in Iceland. The first appearance of alteration minerals and lithologies in drill cutting samples is a useful tool for interpreting broad subsurface characteristics. However, use of drill cutting samples for determining igneous affinity and elemental exchanges during hydrothermal alteration is problematic. Samples recovered from immediately above and below the cored intervals in wells RN-17B and RN-30 demonstrate that drill-cutting samples are biased towards preservation of least altered primary igneous minerals and more resistant alteration minerals, including albite, quartz, and epidote, with preferential loss of finer-grained and less resistant minerals including chlorite and actinolite. This selective recovery obscures elemental exchanges resulting from hydrothermal alteration processes. For some elements, compositional variations (enrichments and depletions) measured from 9.5 m of core exceeds that observed in ~3000 m of cutting analyses. Concentration ratios of hydrothermally immobile elements including Zr, Nb, V, Y, HREE, Hf, Ta and Th in deep (>2245 m) spot drill core samples record bimodal, trace element-enriched and trace element-depleted precursor compositions similar to subaerial Reykjanes Peninsula basalts. The same elements in nearly 3000 m of drill cutting samples from well RN-17 overwhelmingly reflect the more common trace element-enriched igneous precursor, demonstrating that mixing of drill cutting samples obscures details of their igneous affinity. A new and different drill rig was used to deepen well RN-17 below 2266 m in a sidetrack hole (RN-17ST), which resulted in a change in drilling conditions, accompanied with an increased well deviation angle from ~0° to ~4°. Wholerock geochemical results for drill cutting samples from RN-17ST are homogenous for virtually every element; suggesting the change in drilling conditions resulted in extreme mixing of the drill cuttings. Anomalously high concentrations of Cu, Ni, Cr and Ta in some drill cutting samples likely reflects contamination of drill cutting samples by metal alloys used in drill bits and drill collars or more resistant spinel and sulfide phases.

We describe the lithology and present spatially resolved geochemical analyses of samples from the hydrothermally altered Iceland Deep Drilling Project (IDDP) drill core RN-17B. The 9.3m long RN-17B core was collected from the seawater-dominated Reykjanes geothermal system, located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland. The nature of fluids and the location of the Reykjanes geothermal system make it a useful analog for seafloor hydrothermal processes, although there are important differences. The recovery of drill core from the Reykjanes geothermal system, as opposed to drill cuttings, has provided the opportunity to investigate evolving geothermal conditions by utilizing in-situ geochemical techniques in the context of observed paragenetic and spatial relationships of alteration minerals. The RN-17B core was returned from a vertical depth of ~2560m and an in-situ temperature of ~345°C. The primary lithologies are basaltic in composition and include hyaloclastite breccia, fine-grained volcanic sandstone, lithic breccia, and crystalline basalt. Primary igneous phases have been entirely pseudomorphed by calcic plagioclase+magnesium hornblende+chlorite+titanite+albitized plagioclase+vein epidote and sulfides. Despite the extensive hydrothermal metasomatism, original textures including hyaloclastite glass shards, lithic clasts, chilled margins, and shell-fragment molds are superbly preserved. Multi-collector LA-ICP-MS strontium isotope ratio (87Sr/86Sr) measurements of vein epidote from the core are consistent with seawater as the dominant recharge fluid. Epidote-hosted fluid inclusion homogenization temperature and freezing point depression measurements suggest that the RN-17B core records cooling through the two-phase boundary for seawater over time to current in-situ measured temperatures. Electron microprobe analyses of hydrothermal hornblende and hydrothermal plagioclase confirm that while alteration is of amphibolite-grade, it is in disequilibrium and the extent of alteration is dependent upon protolith type and water/rock ratio. Alteration in the RN-17B core bares many similarities to that of Type II basalts observed in Mid-Atlantic Ridge samples.

"Music is both a creative and a performing art" (Hallam, 2006, p. 70). Many musicians and music educators maintain that composing and performing, although related, are essentially different aspects of musical activity. In the professional musical sphere, composition and performance are almost invariably separated; academic studies have treated them discretely; GCSE and "A" level specifications assess them distinctly, and many music teachers assess them in the classroom as if they were separate disciplines. It is common practice for students in the lower secondary school in England to work in a more integrated way, however (Philpott, 2001; Major, 2008), composing, performing to the class, and appraising each others' work. Recently produced assessment guidelines for secondary school music teachers in England (NAME, 2011) encourage this more integrated view, accepting the assumption made by Swanwick and Franca (1999, p. 12) that "musical understanding is a broad conceptual dimension" by considering composing and performing as inter-linked ways of demonstrating and communicating musicality. This study sets out to investigate the links between composing and performing in the secondary school classroom, through peer-rating, teacher rating and students' self-report attitudinal questionnaires, analysing these using a multi-trait, multi-method technique.

Despite inhaled corticosteroid plus long-acting β 2 -agonist (ICS/LABA) therapy, 30–50% of patients with moderate or severe asthma remain inadequately controlled. We investigated the safety and efficacy of single-inhaler fluticasone furoate plus umeclidinium plus vilanterol (FF/UMEC/VI) compared with FF/VI. In this double-blind, randomised, parallel-group, phase 3A study (Clinical Study in Asthma Patients Receiving Triple Therapy in a Single Inhaler [CAPTAIN]), participants were recruited from 416 hospitals and primary care centres across 15 countries. Participants were eligible if they were aged 18 years or older, with inadequately controlled asthma (Asthma Control Questionnaire [ACQ]-6 score of ≥1·5) despite ICS/LABA, a documented health-care contact or a documented temporary change in asthma therapy for treatment of acute asthma symptoms in the year before screening, pre-bronchodilator FEV 1 between 30% and less than 85% of predicted normal value, and reversibility (defined as an increase in FEV 1 of ≥12% and ≥200 mL in the 20–60 min after four inhalations of albuterol or salbutamol) at screening. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1:1:1:1:1), via central based randomisation stratified by pre-study ICS dose at study entry, to once-daily FF/VI (100/25 μg or 200/25 μg) or FF/UMEC/VI (100/31·25/25 μg, 100/62·5/25 μg, 200/31·25/25 μg, or 200/62·5/25 μg) administered via Ellipta dry powder inhaler (Glaxo Operations UK, Hertfordshire, UK). Patients, investigators, and the funder were masked to treatment allocation. Endpoints assessed in the intention-to-treat population were change from baseline in clinic trough FEV 1 at week 24 (primary) and annualised moderate and/or severe asthma exacerbation rate (key secondary). Other secondary endpoints were change from baseline in clinic FEV 1 at 3 h post-dose, St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) total score, and ACQ-7 total score, all at week 24. Change from baseline in Evaluating Respiratory Symptoms in Asthma total score at weeks 21–24 was also a secondary endpoint but is not reported here. Exploratory analyses of biomarkers of type 2 airway inflammation on treatment response were also done. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov , NCT02924688 , and is now complete. Between Dec 16, 2016, and Aug 31, 2018, 5185 patients were screened and 2439 were recruited and randomly assigned to FF/VI (100/25 μg n=407; 200/25 μg n=406) or FF/UMEC/VI (100/31·25/25 μg n=405; 100/62·5/25 μg n=406; 200/31·25/25 μg n=404; 200/62·5/25 μg n=408), with three patients randomly assigned in error and not included in analyses. In the intention-to-treat population, 922 (38%) patients were men, the mean age was 53·2 years (SD 13·1) and body-mass index was 29·4 (6·6). Baseline demographics were generally similar across all treatment groups. The least squares mean improvement in FEV 1 change from baseline for FF/UMEC/VI 100/62·5/25 μg versus FF/VI 100/25 μg was 110 mL (95% CI 66–153; p<0·0001) and for 200/62·5/25 μg versus 200/25 μg was 92 mL (49–135; p<0·0001). Adding UMEC 31·25 μg to FF/VI produced similar improvements (FF/UMEC/VI 100/31·25/25 μg vs FF/VI 100/25 μg: 96 mL [52–139; p<0·0001]; and 200/31·25/25 μg vs 200/25 μg: 82 mL [39–125; p=0·0002]). These results were supported by the analysis of clinic FEV 1 at 3 h post-dose. Non-significant reductions in moderate and/or severe exacerbation rates were observed for FF/UMEC 62·5 μg/VI versus FF/VI (pooled analysis), with rates lower in FF 200 μg-containing versus FF 100 μg-containing treatment groups. All pooled treatment groups demonstrated mean improvements (decreases) in SGRQ total score at week 24 compared with baseline in excess of the minimal clinically important difference of 4 points; however, there were no differences between treatment groups. For mean change from baseline to week 24 in asthma control questionnaire-7 score, improvements (decreases) exceeding the minimal clinically important difference of 0·5 points were observed in all pooled treatment groups. Adding UMEC to FF/VI resulted in small, dose-related improvements compared with FF/VI (pooled analysis: FF/UMEC 31·25 μg/VI versus FF/VI, −0·06 (95% CI −0·12 to 0·01; p=0·094) FF/UMEC 62·5 μg/VI versus FF/VI, −0·09 (−0·16 to −0·02, p=0·0084). By contrast with adding UMEC, the effects of higher dose FF on clinic trough FEV 1 and annualised moderate and/or severe exacerbation rate were increased in patients with higher baseline blood eosinophil count and exhaled nitric oxide. Occurrence of adverse events was similar across treatment groups (patients with at least one event ranged from 210 [52%] to 258 [63%]), with the most commonly reported adverse events being nasopharyngitis (51 [13%]–63 [15%]), headache (19 [5%]–36 [9%]), and upper respiratory tract infection (13 [3%]–24 [6%]). The incidence of serious adverse events was similar across all groups (range 18 [4%]–25 [6%)). Three deaths occurred, of which one was considered to be related to study drug (pulmonary embolism in a patient in the FF/UMEC/VI 100/31·25/25 μg group). In patients with uncontrolled moderate or severe asthma on ICS/LABA, adding UMEC improved lung function but did not lead to a significant reduction in moderate and/or severe exacerbations. For such patients, single-inhaler FF/UMEC/VI is an effective treatment option with a favourable risk–benefit profile. Higher dose FF primarily reduced the rate of exacerbations, particularly in patients with raised biomarkers of type 2 airway inflammation. Further confirmatory studies into the differentiating effect of type 2 inflammatory biomarkers on treatment outcomes in asthma are required to build on these exploratory findings and further guide clinical practice. Study of the hydrothermal dynamics of Yellowstone Lake (Wyoming, USA) is important for identifying potential changes in sublacustrine hydrothermal systems in response to external perturbations from earthquakes, seiches, large waves, and seasonal effects. Remotely operated vehicle (ROV) submersible-based investigations of hydrothermal vents offshore from Stevenson Island reveal numerous non-constructional ~10-cm-diameter orifices with diffuse fluid flow at temperatures up to 174 °C. The vent field occurs in a large roughly conical depression on the lake floor at a water depth of ~120 m. The volatile-rich composition (CO2, H2S) of the vent fluids is preserved by using a novel isobaric sampling system that precludes degassing effects. In addition to high temperatures, the vent fluids have high CO2 and H2S, but low chloride (Cl) and major element concentrations largely indistinguishable from those in ambient lake water. These results are consistent with steam addition to the sublacustrine hydrothermal system. Kaolinite- and boehmite-rich alteration indicates acidic conditions and provides a low-permeability substrate that may contribute to the development of a steam-heated upflow zone. At the scale of individual vent areas (centimeters to meters), perturbations cause bursts of steam-rich fluids that locally expel and disperse sediment and contribute to the formation of vent orifices. Here we report on chemical and physical phenomena associated with the hottest and deepest sublacustrine hydrothermal vents in Yellowstone Lake. Results indicate that vapor-dominated sublacustrine systems are fundamentally different in hydrothermal alteration and hydrothermal dynamic characteristics than their liquid-dominated counterparts. The contest introduced, accented, and accelerated the practical application of computers for education. The Iceland Deep Drilling Project research well RN-15/IDDP-2 at Reykjanes, Iceland, reached its target of supercritical conditions at a depth of 4.5 km in January 2017. After only 6 days of heating, the measured bottom hole temperature was 426 °C, and the fluid pressure was 34MPa. The southern tip of the Reykjanes peninsula is the landward extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in Iceland. Reykjanes is unique among Icelandic geothermal systems in that it is recharged by seawater, which has a critical point of 406 °C at 29.8MPa. The geologic setting and fluid characteristics at Reykjanes provide a geochemical analog that allows us to investigate the roots of a mid-ocean ridge submarine black smoker hydrothermal system. Drilling began with deepening an existing 2.5 km deep vertical production well (RN-15) to 3 km depth, followed by inclined drilling directed towards the main upflow zone of the system, for a total slant depth of 4659m (∼4.5 km vertical depth). Total circulation losses of drilling fluid were encountered below 2.5 km, which could not be cured using lost circulation blocking materials or multiple cement jobs. Accordingly, drilling continued to the total depth without return of drill cuttings. Thirteen spot coring attempts were made below 3 km depth. Rocks in the cores are basalts and dolerites with alteration ranging from upper greenschist facies to amphibolite facies, suggesting that formation temperatures at depth exceed 450 °C. High-permeability circulation-fluid loss zones (feed points or feed zones) were detected at multiple depth levels below 3 km depth to bottom. The largest circulation losses (most permeable zones) occurred between the bottom of the casing and 3.4 km depth. Permeable zones encountered below 3.4 km accepted less than 5% of the injected water. Currently, the project is attempting soft stimulation to increase deep permeability. While it is too early to speculate on the energy potential of this well and its economics, the IDDP-2 is a milestone in the development of geothermal resources and the study of hydrothermal systems. It is the first well that successfully encountered supercritical hydrothermal conditions, with potential high-power output, and in which on-going hydrothermal metamorphism at amphibolite facies conditions can be observed. Tangential endwall contouring (TEWC) is intended to improve the turbomachinery blading efficiency. This paper summarizes the experimental and numerical investigation of a test turbine with endwall contoured vanes and blades. Constant section (2D) airfoils as well as optimized compound lean (3D) high pressure steam turbine blading in baseline and endwall contoured configurations have been examined. Brush seals (BSs) are implemented within the casing sided cavities to minimize the leakage flow near the tip endwalls, where the contouring is also applied. The pressure and temperature data that are recorded in three axial measuring planes are plotted to visualize the change in flow structure. This shows that the efficiency is increased for 2D airfoils by means of endwall contouring. However, the efficiency of the first stage suffers, and the endwall contouring is still beneficial for the overall performance of the engine. Both phenomena (an efficiency loss in stage one and an improvement of the performance in stage two) have also been measured for the optimized 3D configurations; thus, it can be expected that the endwall contouring has also a beneficial impact on the performance of multirow turbines. The numerical investigations demonstrate in detail, how the secondary flow phenomena are influenced by end-wall contouring and a description of the changes in vortex formations as well as blade loading are given for the various configurations. It has been found that for steady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations the use of stage interfaces suppresses the positive effects of the endwall contour onto the downstream blade row. Background: Asthma is characterized by a complex interaction of inflammatory mediators. The prostaglandin D2 receptor, chemoattractant receptor- homologous molecule on Th2 cells (CRTH2), plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of allergic airway inflammation. Objective: To ealuate the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of BI 671800, a CRTH2 antagonist, when added to inhaled corticosteroid therapy in adult patients with symptomatic asthma. Methods: In this phase IIa, 12-week, randomized, double-blind, three-period, four-treatment, incomplete block crossover trial, BI 671800 was administered either as a single 400-mg dose in the morning (A.M.) or evening (P.M.), or 200 mg twice daily (A.M. and P.M.) versus placebo, together with fluticasone propionate (44 ±g, two inhalations twice daily). The primary end point was the change from baseline in trough forced expiratory volume in 1 second percentage predicted after 4 weeks. The secondary end point was the change in Asthma Control Questionnaire score from baseline. Results: A total of 108 patients were randomized and treated. After 4 weeks, the adjusted mean (± SE) treatment differences for the primary end point versus placebo were 0.08 ± 0.62%, 0.28 ± 0.61%, and 0.67 ± 0.63% for BI 671800 at 200 mg twice daily, 400 mg A.M., and 400 mg P.M., respectively (not statistically significant). No statistically significant or clinically meaningful differences in the Asthma Control Questionnaire score were observed versus placebo. Each treatment was well tolerated. Conclusion: BI 671800 at a dose of 400 mg administered for 4 weeks with fluticasone propionate did not provide clinical improvement in patients with asthma; reasons for this are unclear, but it may be due to insufficient inhibition of the CRTH2 receptor at the doses used.
