We present a monitoring study of SN 2004A and probable discovery of a progenitor star in pre-explosion HST images. The photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of SN 2004A show that it was a normal Type II-P which was discovered in NGC 6207 about two weeks after explosion. We compare SN 2004A to the similar Type II-P SN 1999em and estimate an explosion epoch of 2004 January 6. We also calculate three new distances to NGC 6207 of 21.0 +/-4.3, 21.4 +/-3.5 and 25.1 +/-1.7Mpc. The former was calculated using the Standard Candle Method (SCM) for SNe II-P, and the latter two from the Brightest Supergiants Method (BSM). We combine these three distances with existing kinematic distances, to derive a mean value of 20.3 +/-3.4Mpc. Using this distance we estimate that the ejected nickel mass in the explosion is 0.046(+0.031,-0.017) Msolar. The progenitor of SN 2004A is identified in pre-explosion WFPC2 F814W images with a magnitude of mF814W = 24.3 +/-0.3, but is below the detection limit of the F606W images. We show that this was likely a red supergiant (RSG) with a mass of 9(+3,-2) Msolar. The object is detected at 4.7 sigma above the background noise. Even if this detection is spurious, the 5 sigma upper limit would give a robust upper mass limit of 12 Msolar for a RSG progenitor. The cosmological utility of type Ia Supernovae (SNe) prompted numerous studies of these events, and they are now well characterized observationally, both as individual objects and as a population. In contrast, all other types of SNe (i.e., core-collapse events) are not as well observationally characterized. While some individual events have been studied in great detail (e.g., SN 1987A or SN 1998bw), the global properties of the core-collapse SN population are little known. However, in recent years, major drivers for change have emerged, among them the verification of the connection between core-collapse SNe and long-duration Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), the possible utility of some core-collapse SNe (type II-P) as independent cosmological probes, and studies of core-collapse SNe as high redshift targets for missions like SNAP and JWST. The Caltech Core-Collapse Project (CCCP) is a large observational program using the Hale 200'' and the robotic 60'' telescopes at Palomar observatory to obtain optical photometry, spectroscopy and IR photometry of ~50 nearby core-collapse SNe. The program is designed to provide a complete sample of core-collapse events, with well-defined selection criteria and uniform, high-quality optical/IR observations, as well as radio and X-ray light curves for some events. We will use this sample to characterize the little-studied properties of core-collapse SNe as a population. The sample will be used as a comparison set for studies of SNe associated with Gamma-Ray Bursts, to promote and calibrate the use of SNe II-P for cosmography, and to set the stage for investigations of SNe at high-z using coming space missions such as SNAP and JWST., Comment: To appear in the proceedings of "Supernovae as Cosmological Lighthouses", Padua, 2004, ASP conference Series

Over the six years since the discovery of the gamma-ray burst GRB 980425, associated with the nearby (distance, ~40 Mpc) supernova 1998bw, astronomers have fiercely debated the nature of this event. Relative to bursts located at cosmological distances, (redshift, z~1), GRB 980425 was under-luminous in gamma-rays by three orders of magnitude. Radio calorimetry showed the explosion was sub-energetic by a factor of 10. Here, we report observations of the radio and X-ray afterglow of the recent z=0.105 GRB 031203 and demonstrate that it too is sub-energetic. Our result, when taken together with the low gamma-ray luminosity, suggest that GRB 031203 is the first cosmic analogue to GRB 980425. We find no evidence that this event was a highly collimated explosion viewed off-axis. Like GRB 980425, GRB 031203 appears to be an intrinsically sub-energetic gamma-ray burst. Such sub-energetic events have faint afterglows. Intensive follow-up of faint bursts with smooth gamma-ray light curves (common to both GRBs 031203 and 980425) may enable us to reveal their expected large population., Comment: To Appear in Nature, August 5, 2004

We report late-time observations of the radio afterglow of GRB 030329. The light curves show a clear achromatic flattening at 50 days after the explosion. We interpret this flattening as resulting from the blast wave becoming trans-relativistic. Modeling of this transition enables us to make estimates of the energy content of the burst, regardless of the initial jet structure or the distribution of initial Lorentz factors of the ejecta. We find, in accordance with other events, that GRB 030329 is well-described by an explosion with total energy of a few times 10^51 erg expanding into a circumburst medium with a density of order unity., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

(Abridged) We present densely sampled BVRI light curves of the optical transient associated with the gamma-ray burst GRB 030329, the result of a coordinated observing campaign conducted at five observatories. Augmented with published observations of this GRB, the compiled optical dataset contains 2687 photometric measurements, obtained between 78 minutes and 79 days after the burst. We show that the underlying supernova 2003dh evolved faster than, and was probably somewhat fainter than the type Ic SN 1998bw, associated with GRB 980425. We find that our data can be described by a broken power-law decay perturbed by a complex variable component. The early- and late-time decay slopes are determined to be ~1.1 and ~2, respectively. Assuming this single power-law model, we constrain the break to lie between ~3 and ~8 days after the burst. This simple, singly-broken power-law model, derived only from the analysis of our optical observations, may also account for available multi-band data, provided that the break happened ~8 days after the burst. The more complex double-jet model of Berger et al. provides a comparable fit to the optical, X-ray, mm and radio observations of this event. We detect a significant change in optical colors during the first day. Our color analysis is consistent with a cooling break frequency sweeping through the optical band during the first day. The light curves of GRB 030329 reveal a rich array of variations, superposed over the mean power-law decay. We find that the early variations are asymmetric, with a steep rise followed by a relatively slower (by a factor of about two) decline. Many past studies of cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been limited because of the large distance to typical GRBs, resulting in faint afterglows. There has long been a recognition that a nearby GRB would shed light on the origin of these mysterious cosmic explosions, as well as the physics of their fireballs. However, GRBs nearer than z=0.2 are extremely rare, with an estimated rate of localisation of one every decade. Here, we report the discovery of bright optical afterglow emission from GRB 030329. Our prompt dissemination and the brilliance of the afterglow resulted in extensive followup (more than 65 telescopes) from radio through X-ray bands, as well as measurement of the redshift, z=0.169. The gamma-ray and afterglow properties of GRB 030329 are similar to those of cosmological GRBs (after accounting for the small distance), making this the nearest known cosmological GRB. Observations have already securely identified the progenitor as a massive star that exploded as a supernova, and we anticipate futher revelations of the GRB phenomenon from studies of this source., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Past studies suggest that long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have a standard energy of E_gamma ~ 10^51 erg in ultra-relativistic ejecta when corrected for asymmetry ("jets"). However, recently a group of sub-energetic bursts, including the peculiar GRB 980425 associated with SN 1998bw (E_gamma ~ 10^48 erg), has been identified. Here we report radio observations of GRB 030329, the nearest burst to date, which allow us to undertake calorimetry of the explosion. Our observations require a two-component explosion: a narrow (5 degrees) ultra-relativistic component responsible for the gamma-rays and early afterglow, and a wide, mildly relativistic component responsible for the radio and optical afterglow beyond 1.5 days. While the gamma-rays are energetically minor, the total energy release, dominated by the wide component, is similar to that of other GRBs. Given the firm link of GRB 030329 with SN 2003dh our result suggests a common origin for cosmic explosions in which, for reasons not understood, the energy in the highest velocity ejecta is highly variable, Comment: Accepted to Nature

We present radio observations of the afterglow of the bright gamma-ray burst GRB980703 made between one day and one year after the burst. These data are combined with published late-time radio measurements and existing optical, near-infrared (NIR) and X-ray observations to create a comprehensive broadband dataset for modeling the physical parameters of the outflow. While a wind-stratified medium cannot be ruled out statistically, it requires a high fraction of the shock energy in the electrons, and so is not favored on theoretical grounds. Instead, the data are consistent with a fireball model in which the ejecta are collimated and expanding into a constant density medium. The radio data cannot be fit with an isotropic shock but instead require a jet break at ~ 3.5 days, not seen at optical wavelengths due to the presence of a a bright host galaxy. The addition of the full radio dataset constrains the self-absorption frequency, giving an estimate of the circumburst density of n ~ 30 cm^-3, a value which differs substantially from previous estimates. This result is consistent with the growing number of GRB afterglows for which broadband modeling yields n ~= 0.1-100 cm^-3, with a typical value ~ 10 cm^-3., Comment: ApJ submitted

We report our discovery and early time optical, near-infrared, and radio wavelength follow-up observations of the afterglow of the gamma-ray burst GRB 021211. Our optical observations, beginning 21 min after the burst trigger, demonstrate that the early afterglow of this burst is roughly three magnitudes fainter than the afterglow of GRB 990123 at similar epochs, and fainter than almost all known afterglows at an epoch of 1d after the GRB. Our near-infrared and optical observations indicate that this is not due to extinction. Combining our observations with data reported by other groups, we identify the signature of a reverse shock. This reverse shock is not detected to a 3-sigma limit of 110 uJy in an 8.46-GHz VLA observation at t=0.10d, implying either that the Lorentz factor of the burst gamma <~ 200, or that synchrotron self-absorption effects dominate the radio emission at this time. Our early optical observations, near the peak of the optical afterglow (forward shock), allow us to characterize the afterglow in detail. Comparing our model to flux upper limits from the VLA at later times, t >~ 1 week, we find that the late-time radio flux is suppressed by a factor of two relative to the >~ 80 uJy peak flux at optical wavelengths. This suppression is not likely to be due to synchrotron self-absorption or an early jet break, and we suggest instead that the burst may have suffered substantial radiative corrections., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, ApJL accepted; edits for length

The Small Magellanic Cloud is increasingly an invaluable laboratory for studying accreting and isolated X-ray pulsars. We add to the class of compact SMC objects by reporting the discovery of three new long period X-ray pulsars detected with the {\it Chandra X-ray Observatory}. The pulsars, with periods of 152, 304 and 565 seconds, all show hard X-ray spectra over the range from 0.6 - 7.5 keV. The source positions of the three pulsars are consistent with known H-alpha emission sources, indicating they are likely to be Be type X-ray binary star systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The optical afterglow of gamma-ray burst 020813 was observed for 3 hours with the LRIS spectropolarimeter at the Keck-I telescope, beginning 4.7 hours after the burst was detected by HETE-2. The spectrum reveals numerous metal absorption lines that we identify with two systems at z=1.223 and z=1.255. We also detect an O II 3727 emission line at z=1.255 and we identify this galaxy as the likely host of the GRB. After a correction for Galactic interstellar polarization, the optical afterglow has a linear polarization of 1.8-2.4% during 4.7-7.9 hours after the burst. A measurement of p = 0.80% +/- 0.16% on the following night by Covino et al. demonstrates significant polarization variability over the next 14 hours. The lack of strong variability in the position angle of linear polarization indicates that the magnetic field in the jet is likely to be globally ordered rather than composed of a number of randomly oriented cells. Within the framework of afterglow models with collimated flows, the relatively low observed polarization suggests that the magnetic field components perpendicular and parallel to the shock front are only different by about 20%., Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters. 6 pages including 2 figures

We have observed a sample of Delta Scuti stars discovered by the ROTSE collaboration in 1999 with Super-LOTIS in order to characterize changes in their pulsation periods over a time baseline of roughly three years. Achieving these goals required the creation of an automated astrometric and photometric data reduction pipeline for the Super-LOTIS camera. Applying this pipeline to data from a June 2002 observing campaign, we detect pulsations in 18 objects, and find that in two cases the periods have changed significantly over the three years between the ROTSE and Super-LOTIS observations. Since theory predicts that evolutionary period changes should be quite small, sources of non-evolutionary period changes due to the interactions of pulsations modes are discussed., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. We present the discovery of GRB 020405 made with the Inter-Planetary Network (IPN). With a duration of 60 s, the burst appears to be a typical long duration event. We observed the 75-square acrminute IPN error region with the Mount Stromlo Observatory's 50-inch robotic telescope and discovered a transient source which subsequently decayed and was also associated with a variable radio source. We identify this source as the afterglow of GRB 020405. Subsequent observations by other groups found varying polarized flux and established a redshift of 0.690 to the host galaxy. Motivated by the low redshift we triggered observations with WFPC2 on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Modeling the early ground-based data with a jet model, we find a clear red excess over the decaying optical lightcurves that is present between day 10 and day 141 (the last HST epoch). This `bump' has the spectral and temporal features expected of an underlying supernova (SN). In particular, the red color of the putative SN is similar to that of the SN associated with GRB 011121, at late time. Restricting the sample of GRBs to those with z<0.7, a total of five bursts, red bumps at late times are found in GRB 970228, GRB 011121, and GRB 020405. It is possible that the simplest idea, namely that all long duration GRBs have underlying SNe with a modest dispersion in their properties (especially peak luminosity), is sufficient to explain the non detections., Comment: (Fixing HST data table; thanks to N. We present ground-based optical observations of GRB 020124 starting 1.6 hours after the burst, as well as subsequent Very Large Array (VLA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations. The optical afterglow of GRB 020124 is one of the faintest afterglows detected to date, and it exhibits a relatively rapid decay, $F_\nu\propto t^{-1.60\pm 0.04}$, followed by further steepening. In addition, a weak radio source was found coincident with the optical afterglow. The HST observations reveal that a positionally coincident host galaxy must be the faintest host to date, R>29.5 mag. The afterglow observations can be explained by several models requiring little or no extinction within the host galaxy, A_V~0-0.9 mag. These observations have significant implications for the statistics of the so-called dark bursts (bursts for which no optical afterglow is detected), which are usually attributed to dust extinction within the host galaxy. The faintness and relatively rapid decay of the afterglow of GRB 020124, combined with the low inferred extinction indicate that some dark bursts are intrinsically dim and not dust obscured. Thus, the diversity in the underlying properties of optical afterglows must be observationally determined before substantive inferences can be drawn from the statistics of dark bursts., Comment: Submitted to ApJ; 13 pages; 4 tables; 5 figures

GRB 010921 was the first HETE-2 GRB to be localized via its afterglow emission. The low-redshift of the host galaxy, z=0.451, prompted us to undertake intensive multi-color observations with the Hubble Space Telescope with the goal of searching for an underlying supernova component. We do not detect any coincident supernova to a limit 1.34 mag fainter than SN 1998bw at 99.7% confidence, making this one of the most sensitive searches for an underlying SN. Analysis of the afterglow data allow us to infer that the GRB was situated behind a net extinction (Milky Way and the host galaxy) of A_V ~ 1.8 mag in the observer frame. Thus, had it not been for such heavy extinction our data would have allowed us to probe for an underlying SN with brightness approaching those of more typical Type Ib/c supernovae., Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure. We report the serendipitous detection of a previously unreported pulsar from the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud using data from the CHANDRA X-Ray Observatory. Because of the luminosity of about 1.5x10^35 ergs/s, its near lack of variability for more than 20 years, and its soft spectrum we propose that it is an anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP). Data from the ROSAT PSPC in conjunction with the CHANDRA data give a period, P, of 5.44 s and a spin down time, Pdot/P, of 11 ky. We present radio observations of the afterglow of the bright gamma-ray burst GRB980329 made between one month and several years after the burst, a re-analysis of previously published submillimeter data, and late-time optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the host galaxy. From the absence of a spectral break in the optical/NIR colors of the host galaxy, we exclude the earlier suggestion that GRB980329 lies at a redshift of z >~5. We combine our data with the numerous multi-wavelength observations of the early afterglow, fit a comprehensive afterglow model to the entire broadband dataset, and derive fundamental physical parameters of the blast-wave and its host environment. Models for which the ejecta expand isotropically require both a high circumburst density and extreme radiative losses from the shock. No low density model (n << 10 cm^{-3}) fits the data. A burst with a total energy of ~ 10^{51} erg, with the ejecta narrowly collimated to an opening angle of a few degrees, driven into a surrounding medium with density ~ 20 cm^{-3}, provides a satisfactory fit to the lightcurves over a range of redshifts., Comment: 27 pages, incl. 6 figures, minor revisions (e.g. added/updated references) Accepted by ApJ

Of the cosmological gamma-ray bursts, GRB 011121 has the lowest redshift, z=0.36. More importantly, the multi-color excess in the afterglow detected in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) light curves is compelling observational evidence for an underlying supernova. Here we present near-infrared and radio observations of the afterglow. We undertake a comprehensive modeling of these observations and those reported in the literature and find good evidence favoring a wind-fed circumburst medium. In detail, we infer the progenitor had a mass loss rate of Mdot ~ 10^-7 / v_w3 Mo/yr where v_w3 is the speed of the wind from the progenitor in units of 10^3 km/s. This mass loss rate is similar to that inferred for the progenitor of SN 1998bw which has been associated with GRB 980425. Our data, taken in conjunction with the HST results of Bloom et al. (2002), provide a consistent picture: the long duration GRB 011121 had a massive star progenitor which exploded as a supernova at about the same time as the GRB event., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. Using observations from an extensive monitoring campaign with the Hubble Space Telescope we present the detection of an intermediate-time flux excess which is redder in color relative to the afterglow of GRB 011121, currently distinguished as the gamma-ray burst with the lowest known redshift. The red ``bump,'' which exhibits a spectral roll-over at ~7200 Angstrom, is well described by a redshifted Type Ic supernova that occurred approximately at the same time as the gamma-ray burst event. The inferred luminosity is about half that of the bright supernova 1998bw. These results serve as compelling evidence for a massive star origin of long-duration gamma-ray bursts. Models that posit a supernova explosion weeks to months preceding the gamma-ray burst event are excluded by these observations. We report the discovery of the optical and radio afterglow of GRB 010921, the first gamma-ray burst afterglow to be found from a localization by the High Energy Transient Explorer (HETE) satellite. We present optical spectroscopy of the host galaxy which we find to be a dusty and apparently normal star-forming galaxy at z = 0.451. The unusually steep optical spectral slope of the afterglow can be explained by heavy extinction, A_V > 0.5 mag, along the line of sight to the GRB. Dust with similar A_V for the the host galaxy as a whole appears to be required by the measurement of a Balmer decrement in the spectrum of the host galaxy. Thanks to the low redshift, continued observations of the afterglow will enable the strongest constraints, to date, on the existence of a possible underlying supernova., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures. Of all the well localized gamma-ray bursts, GRB 000911 has the longest duration (T_90 ~ 500 s), and ranks in the top 1% of BATSE bursts for fluence. Here, we report the discovery of the afterglow of this unique burst. In order to simultaneously fit our radio and optical observations, we are required to invoke a model involving an hard electron distribution, p ~ 1.5 and a jet-break time less than 1.5 day. A spectrum of the host galaxy taken 111 days after the burst reveals a single emission line, interpreted as [OII] at a redshift z = 1.0585, and a continuum break which we interpret as the Balmer limit at this redshift. Despite the long T_90, the afterglow of GRB 000911 is not unusual in any other way when compared to the set of afterglows studied to date. We conclude that the duration of the GRB plays little part in determining the physics of the afterglow., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. Submitted to ApJ

We report on the Chandra ACIS-S3 imaging observation of the globular cluster NGC 6752. We detect 6 X-ray sources within the 10.5" core radius and 13 more within the 115" half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of Lx approx 10^{30} erg/s for cluster sources. We reanalyze archival data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array and make 12 optical identifications and one radio identification. Based on X-ray and optical properties of the identifications, we find 10 likely cataclysmic variables (CVs), 1-3 likely RS CVn or BY Dra systems, and 1 or 2 possible background objects. Of the 7 sources for which no optical identifications were made, we expect that ~2-4 are background objects and that the rest are either CVs or some or all of the five millisecond pulsars whose radio positions are not yet accurately known. These and other Chandra results on globular clusters indicate that the dozens of CVs per cluster expected by theoretical arguments are being found. The findings to date also suggest that the ratio of CVs to other types of X-ray sources is remarkably similar in clusters of very different structural parameters., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ApJ, minor changes in response to referee's comments

We present millimeter and submillimeter wavelength observations and near-infrared K-band imaging toward the bright gamma-ray burst GRB 010222. Over seven epochs the flux density of the source was constant with an average flux density 3.74+/-0.53 mJy at 350 GHz and 1.05+/-0.22 mJy at 250 GHz, giving a spectral index alpha=3.78+/-0.25. We rule out the possibility that this emission originated from the burst or its afterglow and we conclude that it is due to a dusty, high redshift starburst galaxy (SMM J14522+4301). We argue that the host galaxy of GRB 010222 is the most plausible counterpart of SMM J14522+4301, based in part on the centimeter detection of the host at the expected level. The optical/NIR properties of the host galaxy of GRB 010222 suggest that it is a blue, sub-L_*, similar to other GRB host galaxies. This contrasts with the enormous far-infrared luminosity of this galaxy based on our submillimeter detection (L_Bol~4X10^{12} L_odot). We suggest that this GRB host galaxy has a very high star formation rate, SFR 600 M_\odot/yr, most of which is unseen at optical wavelengths., Comment: ApJ, submitted

We present observations of the Soft Gamma-ray Repeater SGR 1806-20 taken with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We identify the X-ray counterpart of SGR 1806-20 based on detection of 7.5-s pulsations. Using three unrelated X-ray sources (and USNO stars) as position references, we are able to determine that the SGR is at alpha_{2000}=18h08m39.32s and delta_{2000}=-20o24'39.5", with rms uncertainty of 0.3" in each coordinate. We find that SGR 1806-20 is located within the 1-sigma error region determined by Interplanetary Network data and is 14+/-0.5 arcsec distant from the non-thermal core of SNR G10.0-0.3, excluding SGR 1806-20 as the origin of the core. We see evidence for a significant deviation of the spin-down of SGR 1806-20 from its long-term trend, demonstrating erratic spin-down behavior in this source similar to that seen in other SGRs. Finally, we show that there is a broad X-ray halo surrounding SGR 1806-20 out to radii ~1' due to scattering in the interstellar medium., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present the results of Chandra, RXTE, and VLA observations of SGR 1900+14 in the immediate aftermath of its 2001 April 18 giant flare event. In the X-ray band we find the source in a pulsating and bursting state, with time-averaged 2--10 keV flux initially elevated by 20% above the source's previous quiescent periods. In the radio we establish upper limits on the strength of any persistent post-flare emission of 0.7 and 0.1 mJy at 1.4 GHz and 8.0 GHz, respectively. The position of the X-ray source is consistent, to approximately 1 arcsec precision, with the August 1998 VLA determination, and the one-dimensional X-ray profile is consistent with that of a point source. The X-ray spectrum is best-fit by a two component power-law plus blackbody model, with fitted blackbody temperature kT_{BB} ~ 0.5 keV and radius R_{BB} ~ 1.5 km for an assumed distance of 5 kpc. The spectral parameters of this thermal component are consistent with those reported for the source in quiescence, and the variations in the source flux we observe may be explained as variations in the power-law component alone, providing support for magnetar models of SGR 1900+14., Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures. On two occasions, we obtained nearly simultaneous ~ 4 kilosecond snapshot observations of the Galactic black hole and microquasar XTE J1550-564 with Chandra and RXTE near the peak of its May, 2000 outburst. The low-energy sensitivity of Chandra and the resolution of the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS), coupled with the broad energy range and large collecting area of RXTE, have allowed us to place constraints on the outburst accretion flow geometry of this source in the ``intermediate'' X-ray state. The 0.65-25.0 keV continuum spectra are well-described by relatively hot (kT ~ 0.8 keV) accretion disk and hard (Gamma ~ 2.3) coronal power-law components. Broad, relatively strong Fe K-alpha emission line (EW ~170 eV) and smeared absorption edge components consistent with Fe XXV are strongly required in joint spectral fits. The resolution of the Chandra/HETGS reveals that the broad Fe K-alpha emission lines seen clearly in the individual RXTE spectra are not due to an intrinsically narrow line., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures (2 in color). We present observations of the Rapid Burster (RB, also known as MXB 1730-335) using the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. The average interval between type II (accretion) bursts was about 40 s. There was one type I (thermonuclear flash) burst and about 20 "mini-bursts" which are probably type II bursts whose peak flux is 10-40% of the average peak flux of the other type II bursts. The time averaged spectra of the type II bursts are well fit by a blackbody with a temperature of kT = 1.6 keV, a radius of 8.9 km for a distance of 8.6 kpc, and an interstellar column density of 1.7e22 per sq. cm. No narrow emission or absorption lines were clearly detected. The 3 sigma upper limits to the equivalent widths of any features are < 10 eV in the 1.1-7.0 keV band and as small as 1.5 eV near 1.7 keV. Observations of the Type II-P (plateau) Supernova (SN) 1999em and Type IIn (narrow emission line) SN 1998S have enabled estimation of the profile of the SN ejecta, the structure of the circumstellar medium (CSM) established by the pre-SN stellar wind, and the nature of the shock interaction. SN 1999em is the first Type II-P detected at both X-ray and radio wavelengths. The Chandra X-ray data indicate non-radiative interaction of SN ejecta with a power-law density profile (rho \propto r^{-n} with n ~ 7) with a pre-SN wind with a low mass-loss rate of ~2 \times 10^{-6} M_sun/yr for a wind velocity of 10 km/sec, in agreement with radio mass-loss rate estimates. The Chandra data show an unexpected, temporary rise in the 0.4--2.0 keV X-ray flux at ~100 days after explosion. SN 1998S, at an age of >3 years, is still bright in X-rays and is increasing in flux density at cm radio wavelengths. Spectral fits to the Chandra data show that many heavy elements (Ne, Al, Si, S, Ar, and Fe) are overabundant with respect to solar values. We compare the observed elemental abundances and abundance ratios to theoretical calculations and find that our data are consistent with a progenitor mass of approximately 15-20 M_sun if the heavy element ejecta are radially mixed out to a high velocity. If the X-ray emission is from the reverse shock wave region, the supernova density profile must be moderately flat at a velocity ~10^4 km/sec, the shock front is non-radiative at the time of the observations, and the mass-loss rate is 1-2 \times 10^{-4} M_sun/yr for a pre-supernova wind velocity of 10 km/sec. This result is also supported by modeling of the radio emission which implies that SN 1998S is surrounded by a clumpy or filamentary CSM established by a high mass-loss rate, ~2 \times 10^{-4} M_sun/yr, from the pre-supernova star., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted by ApJ, includes new data (one new obs. each of SN 1999em and SN 1998S), expanded discussion of spectral fits

We have searched the rising portion of type I X-ray bursts observed from the Rapid Burster with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer for the presence of periodicities. The 95 per cent confidence upper limit on the average root-mean-square variation of near coherent pulsations with a width of <1 Hz (in 60--2048 Hz) during the first second of the bursts is <8.8 per cent. We report on multi-epoch X-ray observations of the Type IIn (narrow emission line) supernova SN 1995N with the ROSAT and ASCA satellites. The January 1998 ASCA X-ray spectrum is well fitted by a thermal bremsstrahlung (kT~10 keV, N_H~6e20 cm^-2) or power-law (alpha~1.7, N_H~1e21 cm^-2) model. The X-ray light curve shows evidence for significant flux evolution between August 1996 and January 1998: the count rate from the source decreased by 30% between our August 1996 and August 1997 ROSAT observations, and the X-ray luminosity most likely increased by a factor of ~2 between our August 1997 ROSAT and January 1998 ASCA observations, although evolution of the spectral shape over this interval is not ruled out. The high X-ray luminosity, L_X~1e41 erg/sec, places SN 1995N in a small group of Type IIn supernovae with strong circumstellar interaction, and the evolving X-ray luminosity suggests that the circumstellar medium is distributed inhomogeneously., Comment: MNRAS accepted. 6 pages, 2 figures; uses mn.sty and psfig

We report evidence for an Fe K-alpha fluorescence line feature and disk reflection in the Very High, High, and Low State X-ray spectra of the galactic microquasar XTE J1748-288 during its June~1998 outburst. Spectral analyses are made on data gathered throughout the outburst by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array. Gaussian line, relativistic disk emission line, and ionized disk reflection models are fit to the data. In the Very High State the line profile appears strongly redshifted, consistent with disk emission from the innermost stable orbits around a maximally rotating Kerr black hole. In the High State the line profile is less redshifted and increasingly prominent. The Low State line profile is very strong (~0.5 keV equivalent width) and centered at 6.7 +/- 0.10 keV; disk line emission model fits indicate that the inner edge of the disk fluctuates between ~20 and ~100 gravitational radii in this state. The disk reflection fraction is traced through the outburst; reflection from an ionized disk is preferred in the VHS and HS, and reflection from a relatively neutral disk is preferred in the LS. We have identified a likely radio counterpart to the low-mass X-ray binary MXB 1730-335 (the Rapid Burster). The counterpart has shown 8.4 GHz radio on/off behavior correlated with the X-ray on/off behavior as observed by the RXTE/ASM during six VLA observations. The probability of an unrelated, randomly varying background source duplicating this behavior is 1-3% depending on the correlation time scale. The location of the radio source is RA 17h 33m 24.61s; Dec -33d 23' 19.8" (J2000), +/- 0.1". We do not detect 8.4 GHz radio emission coincident with type II (accretion-driven) X-ray bursts. The ratio of radio to X-ray emission during such bursts is constrained to be below the ratio observed during X-ray persistent emission at the 2.9-sigma level. Synchrotron bubble models of the radio emission can provide a reasonable fit to the full data set, collected over several outbursts, assuming that the radio evolution is the same from outburst to outburst, but given the physical constraints the emission is more likely to be due to ~hour-long radio flares such as have been observed from the X-ray binary GRS 1915+105., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ (no changes)

We present the results of the analysis of RXTE, BATSE and optical/infrared data of the 1998 outburst of the X-ray transient system XTE J0421+560 (CI Cam). The X-ray outburst shows a very fast decay (initial e-folding time ~0.5 days, slowing down to ~2.3 days). The X-ray spectrum in the 2-25 keV band is complex, softening considerably during decay and with strongly variable intrinsic absorption. A strong iron emission line is observed. No fast time variability is detected (<0.5 % rms in the 1-4096 Hz band at the outburst peak). The analysis of the optical/IR data suggests that the secondary is a B[e] star surrounded by cool dust and places the system at a distance of >~ 2 kpc. At this distance the peak 2-25 keV luminosity is ~4 x 10^37 erg/s. We compare the properties of this peculiar system with those of the Be/NS LMC transient A 0538-66 and suggest that CI Cam is of similar nature. The presence of strong radio emission during outburst indicates that the compact object is likely to be a black hole or a weakly magnetized neutron star., Comment: Accepted for publication on The Astrophysical Journal, July 1999

We describe the evolutionary progression of an outburst of the Rapid Burster. Four outbursts have been observed with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer between February 1996 and May 1998, and our observations are consistent with a standard evolution over the course of each. An outburst can be divided into two distinct phases: Phase I is dominated by type I bursts, with a strong persistent emission component; it lasts for 15-20 days. Phase II is characterized by type II bursts, which occur in a variety of patterns. The light curves of time-averaged luminosity for the outbursts show some evidence for reflares, similar to those seen in soft X-ray transients. The average recurrence time for Rapid Burster outbursts during this period has been 218 days, in contrast with an average ~180 day recurrence period observed during 1976-1983., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures included with psfig. The repetitive X-ray bursts from the accretion-powered pulsar GRO J1744-28 show similarities to the type II X-ray bursts from the Rapid Burster. Several authors (notably Lewin et al.) have suggested that the bursts from GRO J1744-28 are type II bursts (which arise from the sudden release of gravitational potential energy). In this paper, we present another similarity between these sources. Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of GRO J1744-28 show that at least 10 out of 94 bursts are followed by quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) with frequencies of about 0.4 Hz. The period of the oscillations decreases over their 30--80 s lifetime, and they occur during a spectrally hard ``shoulder'' (or ``plateau'') which follows the burst. In one case the QPO show a modulation envelope which resembles simple beating between two narrow-band oscillations at 0.325 and 0.375 Hz. Using EXOSAT observations, Lubin et al. found QPO with frequencies of 0.039 to 0.056 Hz following 10 out of 95 type II bursts from the Rapid Burster. As in GRO J1744-28, the period of these oscillations decreased over their 100 s lifetime, and they occurred only during spectrally hard ``humps'' in the persistent emission. Even though the QPO frequencies differ by a factor of 10, we believe that this is further evidence that a similar accretion disk instability is responsible for the type II bursts from these two sources., Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal Letters
