The impact of Quaternary climate change on landscape evolution, and more specifically the timing of incision of the overdeepened Alpine valleys, remains difficult to quantify with existing thermochronometric methods. Thermochronometers are used to determine rates of rock cooling, however most techniques are insensitive to temperature changes

Two end-member competing models have been proposed to describe the kinematics of the central Nepal Himalayas in the last few Myr. They differ in their interpretations of which surface breaking faults accommodate current shortening and the kinematics responsible for driving rapid exhumation in the topographic transition zone around the Main Central Thrust (MCT). These locally higher uplift and erosion rates in the High Himalaya could reflect (1) thrusting over a midcrustal ramp with the growth of a Lesser Himalaya duplex at midcrustal depth causing underplating along the Main Himalayan Thrust ramp, or (2) out‐of-sequence thrusting along the front of the High Himalaya, possibly driven by climatically controlled localized exhumation.To decipher between the two tectonic models, we compare existing low and medium-temperature thermochronometric data (40Ar/39Ar on muscovite, apatite (U-Th)/He - AHe, zircon (U-Th)/He - ZHe, apatite fission track - AFT, and zircon fission track - ZFT), extracted from the world thermochronometric data file of Herman et al. (2013), to luminescence thermochronometry data from 61 newly collected rock samples along transhimalayan rivers between the Kali Gandaki and the Trisuli. The luminescence thermochronometry data provide a new perspective on Late Pleistocene exhumation rates (timescales of 104 to 105 years) of the Nepalese Himalayas, by offering quantitative high-resolution constraints of rock cooling histories within the upper kilometres of the Earth’s crust.All of the thermochronometric data show younger ages and higher exhumation rates around the topographic transition and the MCT zone through central Nepal. For the higher temperature thermochronometers, there is a continuous trend towards younger ages from the Lesser Himalaya through the topographic transition and the MCT zone. These data suggest that the in-sequence model, with exhumation rates linked to increased erosion and the formation of a duplex below the Higher Himalayas, coincident with the MCT location in some areas, is the model that best describes the thermochronometric ages of this study area on Myr timescales. However, the luminescence thermochronometry data reveal a spatial and temporal variability of the higher exhumation rates at different timescales, suggesting an intermittency of exhumation signal due to geomorphological processes. The luminescence thermochronometry data also highlight a systematic sharp transition at the MCT, pointing to out-of-sequence activity at this tectonic boundary on 100-kyr timescales. Whether this difference in tectonic model between the two timescales is due to low resolution of the higher temperature thermochronometers, shallow isotherms deflected by fluid circulation and hot spring activity near the MCT, or to a change in tectonic regime during the last 200 kyr, out-of-sequence activity of the MCT needs to be considered in seismic hazard models as it could put the local population at risk.

The interactions between Earth surface processes, climate and tectonics determine the landscape in mountain regions. The Japanese Alps uplifted throughout the Quaternary and now reach elevations of up to 3,000 m. However, quantifying relief changes in response to tectonic activity, magmatism and Late Quaternary glaciation is challenging due to the young age of the Japanese Alps and the difficulty of measuring surface processes at the timescale of glacial-interglacial cycles. Here, we use ultra-low temperature thermochronometers based on the luminescence of feldspar minerals and the electron spin resonance (ESR) of quartz minerals, in combination with inverse modelling to derive rock cooling rates and exhumation rates histories at 104-106 years timescales. We focus on the Tateyama region in the Hida range of the Japanese Alps, which was glaciated during the late Quaternary period. In total, 19 new samples were analyzed by luminescence and ESR thermochronometry. While most luminescence signals have already reached their upper dating limit, ESR signals (Al and Ti centres) yielded ESR ages of between 0.5-0.9 Ma. In general, thermal stability is lower for the Al centre compared to that of the Ti centre, but both centres constrain similar exhumation rates. Glaciers and ice sheets erode mountains and produce vast quantities of sediments that are delivered to rivers and oceans, impacting global sediment and biogeochemical balances. Therefore, understanding how the production of sediments by glacial erosion has evolved in the past, and will evolve in a changing climate, is increasingly important. In this Review, we examine the processes that control the magnitude and timing of glacial erosion of mountains, and how models can be used to reconstruct processes during the development of mountains. Field observations reveal the important role of sliding on the erosion rate, which provide an empirical basis to explain the glacial buzzsaw and the impact of late Cenozoic cooling on erosion rates. Glacial erosion is also expected to evolve in the context of anthropogenic climate warming, as both glacier sliding and the input of meltwater related to thinning and retreat of ice will change, with large effects on downstream ecosystems and global biogeochemical cycles. Thus, the mechanics and impacts of glaciers on sediment production warrant more research, especially in regions experiencing rapid warming. Above all, there is a need for better monitoring of how erosion rates changed over the last decades and will evolve in the future. How glaciers affect mountain height, and the links between climate and glacial erosion in mountains, are debated. This Review describes the erosion of mountains by glaciers and the broader impacts of these processes.

The ability of researchers to raise funding is central to academic achievement. However, whether success in obtaining research funds correlates with the productivity, quality or impact of a researcher is debated. Here we analyse 10 years of grant funding by the Swiss National Science Foundation in Earth and Environmental Sciences, and compare it to the publication record of the researchers who were awarded the funds. No significant statistical correlation can be established between the publication or citation record of a researcher and the amount of money this researcher obtains in grant funding. These results imply that researchers successful in raising funds are not necessarily in a position to be more productive or produce more impactful publications. Those results should be considered for deciding whether to use grant funding as a criterion for career advancement procedures.

Thermoluminescence (TL) of feldspar is investigated for its potential to extract temperature histories experienced by rocks exposed at Earth's surface. TL signals from feldspar observed in the laboratory arise from the release of trapped electrons from a continuous distribution of trapping energies that have a range of thermal stabilities. The distribution of trapping energies, or thermal stabilities, is such that the lifetime of trapped electrons at room temperature ranges from less than a year to several billion years. Shorter lifetimes are associated with low-temperature TL signals, or peaks, and longer lifetimes are associated with high temperature TL signals. Here we show that trapping energies associated with shorter lifetimes, or lower-temperature TL signals (i.e. between 200 and 250 ∘C), are sensitive to temperature fluctuations occurring at Earth's surface over geological timescales. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to reconstruct past surface temperature histories in terrestrial settings by exploiting the continuous distribution of trapping energies. The potential of this method is first tested through theoretical experiments, in which a periodic temperature history is applied to a kinetic model that encapsulates the kinetic characteristics of TL thermometry. We then use a Bayesian approach to invert TL measurements into temperature histories of rocks, assuming that past temperature variations follow climate variations observed in the δ18O records. Finally, we test the approach on two samples collected at the Mer de Glace (Mont Blanc massif, European Alps) and find similar temperature histories for both samples. Our results show that the TL of feldspar may be used as a paleothermometer.

As the climate warms, increases in glacier melt and altered glacier dynamics will result in changes to the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet, impacting the sediment delivery in these rivers. In turn, examining the processes by which proglacial rivers transport sediment delivered by the ice sheet has important implications for the delivery of sediment to the oceans. Applying current knowledge of sediment transport from glacially-fed catchments in alpine regions is difficult, given several pronounced differences compared to glacially-fed catchments in the Arctic. These differences include elevated water discharge and reduced amplitude in diurnal variations of water discharge. Thus, it is imperative that we understand the differences in sediment dynamics between these two regions and evaluate the processes responsible for sediment transport between the ice sheet and ocean. To pursue this understanding, we installed seismic stations to measure bedload transport near the terminus of Russell Glacier during the summer of 2021. We convert the seismic signal from these stations to a bedload transport rate by evaluating several environmental variables, including the transported grain size and ground properties near the river. One station was close to the glacier, whilst the other is 1.5 km downstream. The distance between the stations allows us to evaluate the timing of proglacial sediment transport and deposition. Additionally, the operation of the instruments from early June through mid-August allows us to evaluate seasonal characteristics in sediment discharge. Lastly, we compare these results to the current knowledge of sediment transport from glacierized catchments in mountain regions.

During Late Quaternary time, the paleoclimate of the eastern Sahara was punctuated by multiple pluvial periods, then dramatically and cyclically transformed to hyperarid conditions, receiving less than 2 mm/yr of precipitation at present. Geologists, climate modelers, and archaeologists, therefore, have used various proxies to reconstruct past climates during that time, a crucial period for human habitation and migration. These reconstructions, however, lack the precipitation pattern during those pluvial periods, which represents a significant control on weighing the hypotheses of human migrations and occupations. Here we reconstruct the chronology and paleohydrology of a set of fossil rivers expressed by ridges in the modern landscape due to differential erosion. Our 14C and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages of sediments preserved in these ancient rivers cluster within the last African Humid Period (AHP; ca. 14.8 – 5.5 ka BP) and hence support more significant fluvial activity during this distinct humid epoch. Based on median grain size (D50), paleochannel geometry, and drainage area, paleohydraulic reconstructions indicate that typical precipitation intensities of 55–80 mm/h occurred during sediment transport events. When combined with previous annual rainfall estimates, we find that such rainfall intensities were likely 3–4 times more frequent during the AHP. These climatic perturbations may have rendered some parts of the Nile River Valley inhospitable for occupation, driving humans to migrate away in the northwest and west of the Nile Valley between 10.2 and 7.2 ka BP. Ultimately, our results, along with the archeological data, tell a tale from the past of the dramatic climatic changes that our planet undergoes, demonstrating the critical role of climate in sustaining human populations.

The Japanese Alps uplifted throughout the Quaternary and reach elevations of up to 3,000 m today. However, understanding the interaction between rates of Earth surface processes, tectonics and climate is challenging, partly due to the difficulties of measuring changes in the rates of Earth surface processes at the timescale of glacial-interglacial cycles. In particular, the youth of the Japanese Alps has made measurement of their exhumation histories complicated. To help resolve this issue, we investigate the potential of ultra-low temperature thermochronometers based on the luminescence and electron spin resonance (ESR) of feldspar and quartz minerals, respectively. We focus on the Tateyama region in the Hida range, which was glaciated during the late Quaternary period. In total, eight samples were analyzed by luminescence and ESR thermochronometry. While most luminescence signals have already reached their upper dating limit, ESR signals do constrain exhumation rates.We measured the ESR dose response and thermal decay properties of all samples, specifically targeting the Al and Ti centres. In general, thermal stability is higher for the Ti centre than the Al centre, resulting in ESR ages of between 0.5-0.9 Ma, although the natural intensity of the Ti centre is close to or above the upper dating limit. In contrast, the Al signal still grows with time and is suitable for determining finite exhumation rates. Our ability to quantify past climate conditions is crucial for understanding and predicting future climate scenarios as well as landscape evolution. One of the most drastic climatic changes in Earth’s history was the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) where a significant area of the planet’s surface was covered in ice (Clark et al., 2009). However, most reconstructions of the Earth’s past climate rely on the use of climate proxies (e.g. Jones and Mann, 2004 for a review), which are particularly poorly preserved in terrestrial settings previously covered by ice- thus limiting the applicability of existing methods.Here, we apply feldspar thermoluminescence (TL) surface paleothermometry (Biswas et al., 2018; 2020) to better constrain the temperature history of exposed bedrock surfaces since the Last Glacial Maximum to present day. The aim of this study is to contribute towards a more detailed understanding of glacial and interglacial temperature fluctuations across the Central and Western Alps. Feldspar TL paleothermometry is a recently developed technique that exploits the dependence of trapped charge on temperature (Biswas et al., 2018). The trapped charge is sourced from feldspar’s crystalline lattice. While a TL signal can be extracted between room temperature and 450°C, traps sensitive to typical surface temperature variations (e.g.10°C) are found between 200°C and 250°C (Biswas et al., 2020). As a result, five thermometers (200°C to 250°C in 10°C intervals) can be used together as a multi-thermometer, and subsequently combined with a Bayesian inversion approach to constrain thermal histories over the last50 kyr (Biswas et al., 2020).The temperature histories of bedrock samples collected down two vertical transects adjacent to the Gorner (Switzerland) and the Mer de Glace (France) glaciers, which have been exposed progressively since the LGM, will be presented. In mountain accretionary wedges, it is generally considered that the preservation of a topography in mechanical equilibrium is modulated by the activation of faults, sometimes internal to the prism, sometimes frontal. The folds of the Himalayan foothills correspond to the most frontal structures of the Himalayan prism. Understanding the timing of the initiation and the activity of these frontal folds can provide valuable information on the deformation sequences within the range (reactivation of the MCT, prograde sequences and transfer to frontal folds, ...) in response to tectonic and climatic forcing. Late Cenozoic climatic changes, including glaciations, might have impacted the denudation of the Himalayan range. The study of recent deformation rates is thus key for understanding lateral variations in deformation along the entire Himalayan arc, which will bring new constraints on the interactions between tectonics and surface processes at different scales time, as well as deepen our understanding of the seismic behaviour of the range. Here we quantify exhumation rates in the Himalayan foothills using luminescence thermochronometry, which is a recently developed very-low temperature thermochronometer applicable between tens of years and a few hundred kyr. In contrast to classical methods, it can resolve thermal histories from the upper few km of the Earth’s crust, allowing spatial variations in exhumation rates across the Himalayas to be deciphered on sub-Quaternary timescales. An extensive data set of more than 40 Siwalik rock samples, from Western Nepal to Eastern Bhutan, was measured to complement other thermochronometric data and understand the sub-Quaternary deformation on the Himalayan foreland. The results show along-strike variations in exhumation rates in the Himalayan foothills during the late Quaternary, with exhumation rates across the sub-Himalaya varying locally independently of precipitation trends and changes in the modern convergence rates. These along-strike variations may suggest that over the last 300 kyr, Himalayan shortening has not only been accommodated by the most frontal faults along the Himalayan range.

The exhumation of bedrock is controlled by the interplay between tectonics, surface processes and climate. The highest exhumation rates of cm/yr are recorded in zones of highly active tectonic convergence such as the southern Alps of New Zealand or Himalayan syntaxes, where high rock uplift rates combine with very active surface processes. Here, we use a combination of different thermochronometric systems, and notably trapped-charge thermochronometery, to show that such rates also occur in the Hida Range, Japanese Alps. Our results imply that cm/yr rates of exhumation may be more common than previously thought.The Hida Range is the most northern and most extensive of the Japanese Alps, and reaches elevations of up to 3000 m a.s.l. The Hida Range is thought to have uplifted in the last 3 Myr in response to E-W compression and magmatism. Our study focuses on samples from the Kurobe gorge, which is one of the steepest gorges in Japan. Previous work has shown that exhumation rates in this region are exceptionally high, as documented by the exposure of the ~0.8 Ma Kurobe granite (Ito et al., 2013) in the gorge. We combined 12 new zircon (U-Th/He) ages and 11 new OSL-thermochronometry ages together with existing thermochronometric data to investigate the late Pleistocene exhumation of this region.We found that exhumation rates increased to ~10 mm/yr within the past 300 kyr, likely in response to river base-level fall that increased channel steepness due to climatically controlled eustatic changes. Our thermochronometry data allow the development of time-series of exhumation rate changes at the timescale of glacial-interglacial cycles and show a four-fold increase in baseline rates over the past ~65 kyr. This increase in exhumation rate is likely explained by knickpoint propagation due to a combination of very high precipitation rates, climatic change, sea-level fall, range-front faulting and moderate rock uplift. In mountainous environments, steep hillslopes tend to erode rapidly. These hillslopes, where present above glaciers, trundle rocks onto glacier surfaces below them. The loose rocks (debris) are subsequently transported along with glacial ice as it moves down valley. Debris can be so abundant that it produces continuous blankets across glaciers. Where debris cover is extensive it reduces ice melt and lowers the surface slope of glaciers. This feeds back to reduce basal sliding, thus impacting bedrock erosion. The erosion of bedrock produces loose sediment that is transported down valley along with the ice and by subglacial water flow.Here, using a coupled numerical model, we tie three realms of sediment transport (supraglacial, englacial, and subglacial) with feedbacks between ice dynamics and surface melt. The model runs in 2D (x, z) using the shallow-ice approximation and a simple formulation for melt under debris. Our simulations use glaciological parameters meant to loosely represent glaciers in the Khumbu region of Nepal. We present numerical experiments to reveal the first order effects of debris cover on erosion and landscape evolution.

Proglacial measurements of subglacial sediment export by meltwater are commonly used to estimate glacial erosion rates. Such estimates generally assume that subglacial meltwater flow is the dominant agent driving export and that eroded sediment is rapidly conveyed through subglacial drainage networks to the glacier outlet in efficient channels with large and generally-unsatisfied transport capacities. However, understanding of sediment transport processes under glaciers is limited, especially in the thin, snout-marginal zones of retreating temperate Alpine glaciers.A growing body of field and model-based research from such systems challenges the theory that eroded sediment is rapidly evacuated. Conversely, Alpine glaciers develop intense diurnal and seasonal discharge variation leading to highly variable sediment transport competence and the moderation of sediment export by associated cycles of alluviation. This has important consequences for the timescales over which sediment export can be used as a reliable proxy for glacial erosion, though the problem remains that very little is known about when and under what conditions a glacier margin is capable of evacuating the sediment supplied to it.This study attempts to elucidate sediment transport mechanisms and timescales in the main snout-marginal subglacial channel of glacier d’Otemma, Switzerland, by tracking 324 cobble-sized particles tagged with 433 MHz active radio transponders over the mid-to-late 2021 melt season. Tagged particles were injected into the channel via a 48 m deep borehole and were then tracked over a 350 m subglacial reach and a 150 m proglacial reach with a mobile antenna and stationary antenna arrays.Only 86 particles (27%) were exported in 2021. Preliminary analyses indicate that cobble-sized particles generally have extended residence times in snout marginal zones (weeks to months), with no clear effect of particle size, shape or density on overall transport velocities. Ongoing work involves the daily localisation of particles using a signal strength-based algorithm, providing a unique record of the down-glacier transport of coarse particles in a subglacial channel. Repeat measurements will follow in 2022.

Late Miocene calc-alkaline intrusions in the back-arc of Southern Patagonia mark an eastward migration of the arc due to accelerated subduction velocity of the Nazca plate or slab flattening preceding active ridge subduction. Amongst these intrusions are the emblematic Torres del Paine (51°S) and Fitz Roy (49°S) plutonic complexes, crystalised at ca. 12.5 and ca. 16.5 Ma, respectively (Leuthold et al., 2012; Ramírez de Arellano et al., 2012). Both intrusions are located at the eastern boundary of the Southern Patagonian Icefield and form prominent peaks with steep slopes that are ~3 km higher in elevation than the surrounding low-relief foreland. Their exhumation has been proposed as a response to glacial erosion and associated glacial rebound since ca. 7 Ma (Fosdick et al., 2013), and/or by regional dynamic uplift between 14 and 6 Ma due to the northward migration of subducting spreading ridges (Guillaume et al., 2009). Here we present a new data set of apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He from both plutonic complexes, numerically modelled to unravel their late-Neogene to Quaternary thermal histories. Our results show three rapid cooling periods for the Fitz Roy intrusion: at ca. 9.5 Ma, at ca. 7.5 Ma, and since ca. 1 Ma. For Torres del Paine, inverse thermal modelling reveals short and rapid cooling at ca. 6.5 Ma followed by late-Quaternary final cooling. The 10 Ma cooling signal only evidenced in the northern plutonic complex (Fitz Roy) may represent an exhumation response to the northward migrating subduction of spreading ridge segments, causing localized dynamic uplift. Thus, the absence of exhumation signal before 6.5 Ma in the southern part (Torres del Paine) suggest that the spreading ridge subduction must have occurred before its 12.5 Ma emplacement. On the other hand, rapid cooling by similar magnitude in both plutonic complexes between ca. 7.5–6.5 Ma, likely reflects the onset of late-Cenozoic glaciations in Southern Patagonia. Finally, the late-stage Quaternary cooling signals differ between Torres del Paine and Fitz Roy, likely highlighting different exhumation responses (i.e. relief development vs. uniform exhumation) to mid-Pleistocene climate cooling. We thus identify and distinguish the causes of rapid exhumation periods in the Southern Patagonian Andes, and propose a first Late Miocene exhumation pulse due to subduction of spreading ridge dynamics, and two Late Cenozoic exhumation episodes due to regional climate changes that have shaped alpine landscapes in this region.References:Leuthold J., et al. 2012. The retreat of glaciers since the Last Glacial Maximum in the European Alps has left an imprint on topography through various erosional processes. However, few methods are currently capable of resolving these mechanisms on Late Glacial to Holocene timescales. Quantifying the relative contributions of mountain erosion, during these different climate cycles, is useful for understanding long-term landscape evolution and the links between global climate and erosion. Here, we combine three optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) exposure dating signals with 10Be surface exposure dating to constrain the post-glacier erosion rates of bedrock samples adjacent to the Gorner Glacier in the European Alps. The results reveal erosion rates of the order of 10-2 to 10-1mma-1, in general agreement with other studies in the region, as well as a strong negative correlation between erosion rate and elevation, suggesting that frost crack weathering is perhaps not the dominant form of post-glacier weathering. Finally, a global compilation of both subglacial and periglacial erosion rates shows that periglacial erosion rates could be greater than previously thought. Yet subglacial erosion remains higher, implying that it continues to have the stronger influence on shaping landscapes. Therefore, with a changing climate, periglacial erosion rates are likely to remain transient. The electron spin resonance (ESR) of quartz has previously been shown to have potential for determining rock cooling histories; however, this technique remains underdeveloped. In this study, we explore the ESR of a suite of samples from the Hida range of the Japanese Alps. We develop measurement protocols and models to constrain the natural trapped-charge concentration as well as the parameters that govern signal growth and signal thermal decay. The thermal stability of the Al and Ti centres is similar to that of the luminescence of feldspar. Inverting the ESR data for cooling yields similar thermal histories to paired luminescence data from the same samples. However, a series of synthetic inversions shows that whereas the luminescence of feldspar can only resolve minimum cooling histories of ∼160 ∘C Myr−1 over timescales of 103−5 years, quartz ESR may resolve cooling histories as low as 25–50 ∘C Myr−1 over timescales of 103−7 years. This difference arises because quartz ESR has a higher dating limit than the luminescence of feldspar. These results imply that quartz ESR will be widely applicable in the constraint of late-stage rock cooling histories, providing new insights into landscape evolution over late Quaternary timescales.

These oscillations caused drastic changes in precipitation rates, often associated with ancient human migrations. In particular, significant migration of riparian populations from the Nile Valley to the west and northwestward of the Sahara occurred during the African Humid Period (AHP), an episode of increased monsoons, which characterized North Africa in response to increasing insolation. Several fossil rivers, now preserved as ridges throughout southern Egypt due to their floodplains' deflation, contain archeological artifacts and thus represent a potentially important record of fluvial activity during this episode of past human dynamics and environmental change. Here we present 14C and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages of sediments preserved in these palaeorivers, which cluster within the AHP and are thus consistent with increased fluvial activity during this distinct humid period. Palaeohydraulic reconstructions based on grain size, channel geometry, and drainage area suggest typical precipitation intensities of 55–80 mm/h during sediment transport events. Given previous annual rainfall estimates, these hydrologic conditions may have lasted, or occurred, during the AHP up to 3–4 times more frequently than before and after this period. Such intense fluvial activity is consistent with monsoon intensification and may have rendered the area inhospitable for human settlements, congruent with population migration out of the Nile Valley during the AHP. These findings highlight links between past human ecodynamics and environmental signals, providing a concrete narrative of human population response to warming with potential echo in the current situation. Finally, we assessed the release kinetics of several solutes and compared various formulations. Taken together, this work shows that NMR has the potential to assist the design of peptide/liposome systems and more generally drug delivery systems.

The Namche Barwa syntaxis in the eastern Himalaya is rapidly evolving in terms of its tectonics and topography. Here we constrain the exhumation history of the Yigong River to the immediate north of the syntaxis across different time scales using a multidisciplinary approach. Our new thermochronometric data reveal an acceleration of exhumation rates since 2 Ma in the downstream of the Yigong. Cosmogenic nuclides and thermoluminescence thermochronometry analyses confirm persistent rapid exhumation in the lower Yigong over the Quaternary with further increased exhumation in the last 100 ka. Together with the analysis of the morphology of the Yigong River profile, we interpret that northward expansion of the syntaxis together with capture of the Yigong by the Yarlung Tsangpo River during this expansion is responsible for the exhumation history of the Yigong River in the Quaternary.

Assessing the impact of Quaternary glaciation at the Earth's surface implies an understanding of the long-term evolution of alpine landscapes. In particular, it requires simultaneous quantification of the impact of climate variability on past glacier fluctuations and on bedrock erosion. Here we present a new approach for evaluating post-glacial bedrock surface erosion in mountainous environments by combining terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide 10Be (TCN) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) surface exposure dating. Using a numerical approach, we show how it is possible to simultaneously invert bedrock OSL signals and 10Be concentrations into quantitative estimates of post-glacial exposure duration and bedrock surface erosion. By exploiting the fact that OSL and TCN data are integrated over different timescales, this approach can be used to estimate how bedrock erosion rates vary spatially and temporally since glacier retreat in an alpine environment.

Characterizing subglacial water flow is critical for understanding basal sliding and processes occurring under glaciers and ice sheets. Development of subglacial numerical models and acquisition of water pressure and tracer data have provided valuable insights into subglacial systems and their evolution. Despite these advances, numerical models, data conditioning, and uncertainty quantification are difficult, principally due to high number of unknown parameters and expensive forward computations. In this study, we aim to infer the properties of a subglacial drainage system in two dimensions using a framework that combines physical and geostatistical processes. The methodology is composed of three main components: (i) a channel generator to produce networks of the subglacial system, (ii) a physical model that computes water pressure and mass transport in steady state, and (iii) Bayesian inversion in which the outputs (pressure and tracer-transit times) are compared with synthetic data, thus allowing for parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification. We evaluate the ability of this framework to infer the subglacial characteristics of a synthetic ice sheet produced by a physically complex deterministic model, under different recharge scenarios. Results show that our methodology captures expected physical characteristics for each meltwater supply condition, while the precise locations of channels remain difficult to constrain. The framework enables uncertainty quantification, and the results highlight its potential to infer properties of real subglacial systems using observed water pressure and tracer-transit times.

Carbonate platform islands are important landscape features in the northeastern part of the Okavango Delta region of Botswana, the Chobe Enclave. However, the formation processes and the timing of these “Chobe Islands” remain unclear. They are assumed to be the result of late Quaternary hydrological changes. Records of such changes are poorly preserved, though the occurrence of beach ridges in the Middle Kalahari Basin attests to the existence of large paleo-lakes in the past. Carbonate rocks from the Chobe Island appear to be relics of palustrine environments, but their relationship with the other hydrological archives is still unclear. Here, we report optically stimulated luminescence dating of key sedimentary beds in and around a single Chobe Island. It was necessary to model dose rate evolution for each sample individually, taking into account post-depositional changes in the sediment chemistry and its burial depth. The resulting ages suggest that the dated units were deposited between MIS6 to MIS1. The carbonate platform itself appears to have been deposited in two phases, separated by either an unexpectedly long (∼40 ka) depositional hiatus or an episode of erosion. This study demonstrates the potential of using luminescence dating in such settings, and offers the possibility of linking sedimentary processes within the Chobe Enclave to regional paleo-hydrological records.

Thermoluminescence (TL) has traditionally been used to estimate the depth of trapping centers in luminescence materials and explain the isothermal decay in the case of synthetic dosimeters and natural materials used in luminescence dating. Nevertheless, new fields of application of TL and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) materials, namely particle temperature sensing and thermochronometry, motivate a need for accurate models for the luminescence processes and estimation of the trapping parameters, in particular activation energy and frequency factor. Although calibration of the TL materials may be possible and recommended in some applications, using for example, microheaters, laser heating or pyroprobes, the procedures can be complicated and time consuming. With TL, however, appropriate models with parameters obtained in laboratory conditions can in principle be used to predict the temperature and time dependence of the stimulation processes in the microsecond to the second timescales (in the case of particle temperature sensing), and in the tens of thousands years (in the case of thermochronometry). In this paper we present the fundamentals of temperature sensing using TL, tracing parallels between the applications in thermochronometry and in particle temperature sensing, and review the main challenges, both fundamental and practical, for the advancement of the technique. Fundamental challenges are the very wide timescales involved in these applications, the need for better TL models, and the inherent time-temperature ambiguity in the Arrhenius equation, in addition to other practical problems. Possible solutions to these challenges and future research directions are discussed.

With the conclusion of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), about 20 000 years ago, ended the most recent long-lasting cold phase in Earth history. This last glacial advance left a strong observable imprint on the landscape, such as moraines, trimlines and other glacial geomorphic features. These features reflect the extent of former glaciers and ice caps, which in turn provides information on past temperature and precipitation conditions. Here we present an inverse approach to reconstruct the equilibrium line altitudes (E) from observed ice extents. The ice-flow model is developed solving the mass conservation equation using the shallow ice approximation and implemented using Graphical Processing Units (GPUs). We present the theoretical basis of the inversion method, which relies on a Tikhonov regularization, and demonstrate its ability to constrain spatial variations in mass balance with idealized and real glaciers.

In recent years, rock surface dating has seen the emergence of a technique based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). This application translates the depth of OSL signal bleaching within a rock surface into an exposure age or erosion rate at 1-104 a timescales. Considerable effort has been undertaken to improve our understanding of OSL rock surface dating, yet a large amount of uncertainty associated with the method remains. Specifically, OSL profiles measured into rock surfaces can be highly scattered. Potential causes of this scatter could be lithological heterogeneity that modify bleaching rate throughout the rock, variability in surface erosion or experimental artefacts. Here, we report experiments that were conducted to explore whether experimental artefacts could contribute to the scatter in OSL profiles measured from rock surfaces exposed in Zermatt, Switzerland. This was done by varying the following parameters: (i) heating rate, (ii) isothermal holding time, (iii) luminescence signal detection filters, (iv) the sequential order of optical stimulations, and (v) core diameter. Our results indicate that sample temperature, for both preheating and stimulation, may exert a strong influence on the OSL profiles obtained. Thermal lag, i.e. the temporal offset between sample temperature and the instrument temperature, can be significant for rock slices if a heating rate of 5 °C s−1 is used and if rock slices are placed directly on the instrument carousel. To reduce this effect, our results suggest future studies place samples in metal cups, reduce the heating rate and increase preheating and holding times prior to optical stimulation, to allow samples to heat at the desired rate and reach the required temperatures.

Our ability to quantify past climate conditions is crucial for predicting future scenarios and landscape evolution. To date, reconstructions of the Earth’s past climate have mostly relied on the use of climate proxies to infer previous surface conditions (e.g. Jones and Mann, 2004 for a review). However, few methods exist that are capable of directly measuring past temperature histories, particularly in terrestrial settings.The aim of this study is to contribute towards a more detailed understanding of glacial and interglacial temperature fluctuations across the Central and Western Alps, from the Last Glacial Maximum to present day, by constraining past temperatures of exposed bedrock surfaces adjacent to the Gorner glacier in Zermatt, Switzerland. This is done through the recently developed application of feldspar thermoluminescence to surface paleothermometry (Biswas et al., 2018; 2020). The thermoluminescence signal of feldspar, from room temperature to 450°C, is sourced from a continuous distribution of electron traps within the crystal lattice (Biswas et al., 2018). The release of this trapped charge is temperature dependent and thus, at room temperature, results in traps with a range of thermal stabilities with electron residence times ranging from less than a year to several billion years (Aitken 1985). Traps sensitive to typical surface temperature variations (e.g. ∼10°C) have been shown to lie between 200°C and 250°C of the TL glow curve (Biswas et al., 2020). From this temperature range, five thermometers (200°C to 250°C in 10°C intervals) can be used together as a multi-thermometer, and subsequently combined with a Bayesian inversion approach to constrain thermal histories over the last ∼50 kyr (Biswas et al., 2020).In this study, the preliminary temperature histories of five bedrock samples with independently constrained exposure ages, exposed progressively since the Last Glacial Maximum, will be presented.References:Aitken, M.J., 1985. Solidification pressure and crystallization age of the ~5 Ma Shiaidani Granodiorite (Hida Mountain Range, central Japan) are determined based on Al-in-hornblende geobarometry and U–Pb zircon dating. Al-poor patchy replacements developed in amphiboles are common in this granite and petrographic study revealed that the replacements include chloritized biotite and albitic plagioclase. These are probably the hydrothermally recrystallized domains, and should not be used for solidification pressure estimates. Magmatic rim of amphibole is characterized by Si 0.7 a.p.f.u.), and utilized in solidification pressure estimate that yielded 0.17–0.29 GPa. The solidification age of the granite is estimated as ~5.6–5.2 Ma using U–Pb zircon dating. From these data, the lower limit of an average denudation rate after ~5.6–5.2 Ma for the area where Shiaidani Granodiorite is exposed is estimated as 0.93–2.5 mm/year.

Sediment fingerprinting methods aim to determine the relative contribution of different source areas in detrital sediments based on natural properties – fingerprints – of the source areas. Here, we use U/Th–Pb age signatures as fingerprints, assuming that the age signal is not altered during erosion–transportation–deposition events, and given that recent technological advances enable precise dating of large amounts of grains. We introduce a formal inversion method that allows to disentangle the amalgamation of source contributions in detrital zircon data and enables to convert this information into an erosion rate map starting from the spatial distribution of zircon age signatures. Relying on the least‐squares method and using prior and covariance information to deal with non‐uniqueness, we show, using synthetic and natural examples, that we are able to retrieve erosion rate patterns of a catchment when the age distribution and zircon fertility for each source area are well known. Moreover, we show that not only zircon age fingerprints but also other tracers such as mineral content can be used. Furthermore, we found that adding data from samples taken at the outlet of tributaries improves the estimation of erosion rate patterns. We conclude that the least squares inverse model applied to detrital data has great potential for investigating erosion rates.

The Central Andes between 18°S and 36°S latitude strike north-south for 2000 km along the Chilean subduction margin, cross several climate zones from hyperarid to humid and exhibit mean elevations in excess of 4000 m.a.s.l. Here, we investigate the relationships between tectonics, climate and exhumation by inverting low-temperature thermochronological data compiled from the literature (824 ages from 549 samples) and new data (238 ages from 146 samples) to quantify the exhumation rate history of the Central Andes since 80 Ma. Our inferred exhumation rates west of the drainage divide and between 18 and 32°S did not exceed 0.25 km/Ma. Such low exhumation rates are consistent with low shortening rates and arid conditions in this region. Local pulses of exhumation occurred only during the Eocene as response to active deformation and during the Miocene, probably as response to uplift of the western Andean slope. East of the drainage divide between 18 and 28°S, the observed exhumation pattern reflects the onset and eastward propagation of deformation. Here, exhumation occurred locally since the middle-to-late Eocene in the Eastern Cordillera and the Altiplano-Puna and subsequently affected larger parts of these regions and the north-western Sierra Pampeanas during the Oligocene. In the early Miocene (~20 Ma), the Interandean zone started exhuming and at 12-10 Ma exhumation propagated into the Subandean zone. Enhanced shortening rates and intensified precipitation along the eastern deformation front associated with the onset of the South American Monsoon led to increased exhumation rates in the eastern Interandean and the Subandean zones in the Plio-Pleistocene (0.6 km/Ma). Higher Pleistocene exhumation rates are also observed in the northern Sierra Pampeanas (1.5 km/Ma) that can be related to rock uplift along steep reverse faults coupled with high precipitation. South of 32°S on the western side, exhumation rates in the Principal Cordillera increased from ca. 0.25 km/Ma in the Miocene to rates locally exceeding 2 km/Ma in the Pleistocene. Whereas the tectonic regime in the southern Principal Cordillera remained unchanged since the late Miocene, these higher rates are likely associated with enhanced erosion resulting from intensified Pleistocene precipitation and glacial growth in this region, reinforced by isostatic rock uplift and active tectonics. Our study shows that the onset of exhumation correlates mainly with the initiation of horizontal shortening and crustal thickening, whereas the magnitude of exhumation is largely set by the amount of precipitation and glacial erosion and by the style of deformation, which is controlled by inherited structures and the amount of sediments in the foreland.

Landscapes evolve through surface processes that are often transient in space and time. To understand the underlying geomorphic processes, one must assess how erosion rates vary spatially. This can be done using provenance analysis. Here, we introduce a formal inversion method to derive erosion patterns using detrital zircon age data as fingerprints. Zircons are omnipresent in Earth’s crust and contain information about the time since (re)crystallization in their U/Th-Pb ratio. For each geological unit having undergone a specific tectonic or magmatic history, one can find a unique age-frequency signature. Hence, erosion and sedimentation of grains originating from diverse source areas lead to a mix of the varying age-frequency signatures in sediments found at the outlet of a catchment. Considering that the age signal is not altered during erosion-transportation-deposition events, and given that recent technological advances enable precise dating of large amounts of grains, U/Th-Pb zircon ages provide an appropriate fingerprinting tool. Our inversion approach relies on the least-squares method with a priori information and model covariance to deal with non-uniqueness. We show with synthetic and natural examples that we are able to retrieve erosion rate patterns of a catchment when the age distribution for each geological unit is well known. Furthermore, relying on the nested form of catchments and their subcatchments, we demonstrate that adding samples taken at the outlet of subcatchments improves the estimation of erosion rate patterns. We conclude that the least squares inverse model applied on detrital zircon data has great potential for investigating erosion rates.

Recent climate change is causing rapid retreat of alpine glaciers around the globe. As ice melts and glaciers thin, glacier motion and subglacial processes will change. One of the most relevant aspects for down-valley environments, settlements and infrastructure is the potential change in flow discharge and sediment output.Here we present the results of an ongoing monitoring program at the Gorner Glacier, Switzerland, the second-largest glacier system in the European Alps. During the melt season of 2018 and 2019, stage and turbidity were monitored with a 5 minute frequency along a turbulent section of the glacial river, located approximately 1 km downstream of the glacier terminus. For calibration of the turbidity measurements, daily water samples were obtained with an automated pump sampler, supported by additional intermittent manual sampling. The data is complemented by a discharge time series that also contains information on the flushing of a bedload trap at the hydro power weir located about 2 km downstream of the glacier terminus. The discharge and flushing data have a resolution of 15 minutes. Turbidity and discharge allow estimation of the output of suspended load, while the flushing data inform about bedload. We further measured total organic carbon content of the water samples to infer the water and sediment source.Data suggest a clear seasonal pattern, not only in discharge and sediment output, but also in suspended sediment concentration (SSC). While SSC is high during snow melt and in early summer, it decreases rapidly in July and stays at similar levels until September. This may indicate exhaustion of sediment storage beneath the glacier, but could also result from a change in subglacial regime, e.g. from a decrease in subglacial water pressure due to the progressive opening of subglacial cavities during the melt season. High fractions of organic carbon, presumably due to lateral sediment input from hillslopes, occur during storms throughout the entire season.

The transition from slow flow to rapid sliding is a noticeable feature of both ice sheets and outlet glaciers. Most existing models attempting to understand the complex physical transition processes assume an idealized model geometry with a flat bed. These models have shown that the onset of sliding entails basal refreezing, which in turn suppresses sliding. The theoretical difficulties in understanding sliding commencement in these process-based models contrast with the apparent ubiquity of the transition in the field. Here, we hypothesize that the presence of basal topography could resolve the inconsistency between model predictions and field observations.We test our hypothesis by investigating the flow-to-sliding transition in a process-based model of ice flowing over bedrock with significant roughness. We assume that the bed is rigid and that the boundary condition at the bed is no-slip. We incorporate variations in basal topography into an iterative nonlinear Stokes solver for thermo-mechanically coupled ice deformation using the Immersed Boundary Method. This approach permits us to address the basal ice to bedrock transition with high accuracy and to study the impact of the shape of this transition zone.Our results suggest that shear heating in the vicinity of pronounced roughness extends well into the bulk of the ice, leading to a spatially variable viscosity. These spatial variations in topography can therefore significantly impact the overall viscosity distribution in the ice. High shear strain rates localize at the tops of the bedrock topography. Thermo-mechanical feedback lead to the spontaneous formation of internal shear band over time, by connecting the topographic heights. The internal shear zone accommodates the majority of shear deformation, inducing a sliding motion of the upper part of the domain. Our results provide a process-based explanation of recently measured ice deformation data at the West margin of Greenland Ice Sheet (Maier et al. 2019). Quaternary erosion through glacial and post-glacial processes has left an imprint on Alpine topography. There are few methods capable of resolving these processes on Late glacial to Holocene timescales. The aim of this study is to contribute towards a more detailed understanding of post-glacial erosion across the Central and Western Alps by better constraining the post-glacial erosion history of the Gorner glacier in Zermatt, Switzerland. This is done using a new approach that combines Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and 10Be cosmogenic nuclide surface exposure dating to invert for post-glacial erosion rates (Lehmann et al., 2019). Both dating methods are influenced by surface erosion but operate on different spatial scales- OSL signals form within the first 1-5 mm of a rock surface (Sohbati et al., 2011) whereas the 10Be signal accumulates within approximately the first 3 m (Lal, 1991). Six bedrock samples, exposed progressively since the Last Glacial Maximum, were collected along a vertical transect spanning an elevation of 641 m. Preliminary results show inheritance in the bottom three samples suggesting multiple advances and retreat. During the pinnacle of the last glacial period 21 kyr ago, the Alps and the Pyrenees were largely covered by ice. Climate was colder and most likely drier, but the magnitudes of temperature and precipitation changes remain poorly constrained. This is in part because climate proxies are not sufficiently accurate, and because there are unknowns on the past position of the Westerly winds and, consequently, the intensity of the moisture flow towards Europe. A new inverse method combined with an ice flow model enables us to infer past climate from mapped ice extents. In the case of the Alps, all of the presented scenarios recover an increase in the position of the ELA across the mountain range from west to east, and a decrease from north to south, pointing to a dominantly zonal circulation with Westerlies bringing moisture from the Atlantic. This is supported by the Pyrenees reconstruction, where the method recovers a clear N-S gradient for all scenarios, indicating that the moisture source from the direction of the Atlantic. While the precipitation pattern was probably not much different from today, mean temperatures were ~9.3 ± 2.97˚C lower in the Alps and ~6.6 ± 1.6˚C lower in the Pyrenees. Our results match pollen-based reconstructions if the climate was 60% dryer than today.

Throughout the last 65,000 years, there have been several brief periods of increased temperatures and precipitation over the eastern Sahara. These periods have been constrained by numerous proxies including: palaeodischarge and sediment-load estimates of the Nile River, cave speleothems, dust fluxes, fossil groundwater, marine sediments, and reconstructed palaeolake level fluctuations. These climate disturbances are widely considered to have affected both the migration patterns of anatomically modern humans and Holocene human settlements.However, these proxies can not be directly translated into precipitation intensity which would have had a profound impact on human activities, as intense precipitation events would make settlements next to rivers hazardous places to live. Here we reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions of six palaeoriver channel systems preserved over a ca 40’000 km2 area in southern Egypt using geochronological, palaeohydrological and sedimentological techniques. These palaeorivers deposits are currently topographically inverted due to wind deflation. Despite previous attempts at dating these river channels using Acheulean artifacts and pottery shards collected from within the channel bodies, their age remains contentious between the middle Pleistocene to Holocene. Here we provide refined age constraints using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) coupled with Carbon-14 dating. Our results show that these rivers record at least 8 episodes of fluvial deposition distributed between 53 ± 7 ka and 1 ± 0.25 ka ago.In addition, we estimate, using channel geometry (width and height) and median grain size (D50), the palaeoslope, palaeovelocity, and palaeodischarge of these ancient inverted channels. Combining these parameters with estimates of palaeodrainage areas (based on digital elevation models (derived from ALOS PALSAR data) and Hack’s law) allows us to assess palaeoprecipitation rates in the range of 50 ± 10 mm/h during the incision of these palaeorivers. These rates indicate relatively intense periods of precipitation and important sediment transport periods during the early to mid-Holocene pluvial period in the Sahara compared with previous pluvial periods. Our results show that during these warmer and wetter periods the precipitation occurred in intense periods, which we suggest created hazardous environments close to the rivers and thus causing forcing human migration away from the rivers into the West and North. This, therefore, gives a plausible mechanism for the dispersal of human settlements from the South of Egyptian Sahara to the North-West 8,500 to 5,300 years ago.
