Detours are an integral part of social life, abundant in a wide variety of situations and registers: disruptions of traffic; avoidance of interactions, places, or specific travel modes; migrations; sightseeing tours, etc. Conceived as mobilities involving longer travel (spatially or temporally) than initially expected, they entail complex and heterogeneous experiences. But if detours are nothing new, they have so far received limited attention in the field of mobilities studies and beyond. This paper sketches a theoretical outline for why geographers should take “detours” seriously as a concept and metaphor in research. First, “detours” helps to pinpoint situations where space-time is elongated and, at times, manipulated to fulfil certain social purposes and intentions. Second, it simultaneously recognises less deterministic scenarios where space-time is constructed out of a confederacy of agencies that exceed human control. Third, “detours” challenges capitalist/productivist ideas of efficiency, parsimony and waste to contemplate other possibilities of sociospatial existence that can benefit from routes that have gone off tangent. The paper concludes with some future directions for geographic learning and applications of “detours”.

While low-cost aeromobilities have mostly been associated with secondary or regional airports, they are increasingly present in main airports, where legacy carriers dominate. This chapter questions this change, by focusing on the in-betweenness experienced by passengers using these low-cost, yet main-hubbed, airlines. This in-betweenness refers to mobile situations that are not fully institutionalized, thus challenging the dominant representations of low-cost air transport. Drawing on a study carried out in the airports of Amsterdam Schiphol, Frankfurt, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Dubai International, the chapter highlights the mobile, spatial and temporal segregations pitching legacy carriers’ passengers against charter and low-cost carriers’ passengers, as well as the complex position occupied by these main-hubbed low-cost aeromobilities. It also shows the social and operational tensions involved by low-cost passengers’ practices in these places and what they could mean for the future of aviation.

Les mobilités et les espaces publics sont deux questions qui gagnent grandement à être articulées pour mieux comprendre l’espace des sociétés. Ce livre montre que les mobilités inscrivent les espaces publics à des échelles bien plus larges que celles auxquelles ils sont habituellement appréhendés. Il donne aussi à voir combien les espaces publics mettent les mobilités aux prises avec l'altérité du monde et des corps. Issues de divers horizons disciplinaires (géographie, urbanisme, sociologie, science politique), les contributions s’appuient sur une large palette de terrains, en France et dans le monde, et de méthodes, y compris les plus expérimentales : recherche-création, traversées sonores ou déambulations participatives. En faisant de la mobilité une catégorie fondatrice de l’espace public, ce volume donne tout son sens à l’expérience du passage comme matrice inattendue de l’espace des sociétés, à travers laquelle se fait et se défait le commun.

International audience; Formality and informality, Global North and Global South as well as globalization from above and globalization on below are enduring dichotomies informing greatly our representations of cities. This paper envisions the overcoming of such oppositions by focusing on the power dynamics engaged by informality in the very city centre of a so called Global North metropolis. The study of the spatial and social arrangements contracted between (in)formal stakeholders of several Parisian tourist attractions highlights the multiple ways in which the urban official order is infringed by the stakeholders of the informal economy on an everyday basis. Despite the strong apparatus of security, these stakeholders manage to assert themselves in the power relationships at stake in the public spaces and to build an alternative power geometry, allowing to grasp new forms of urban order at play. They turn out to be co-producers of the metropolis by reshaping tourist representations and practices as well as urban landscapes.; Formalité et informalité, Nords et Suds, ou mondialisations par le haut et par le bas, constituent autant de dichotomies qui structurent encore largement les représentations de l’urbain. Cet article propose de les dépasser en s’intéressant aux logiques de pouvoir liées à l’informalité au cœur d’une métropole dite du Nord. L’étude des arrangements spatiaux et sociaux entre acteurs formels et informels sur plusieurs sites touristiques parisiens montre comment l’ordre urbain officiel est transgressé au quotidien par les acteurs de l’économie touristique informelle. Malgré l’ampleur du dispositif de contrôle, ces acteurs parviennent à s’imposer dans les jeux de pouvoir à l’œuvre dans les espaces publics et à construire un pouvoir alternatif, laissant entrevoir d’autres formes d’ordre urbain. Ils s’affirment par ailleurs comme des producteurs de la métropole, prescripteurs de représentations et de pratiques touristiques qui remodèlent les paysages urbains.

This paper aims to identify the logics of the categorization of mobility through the study of advertising in an important place of travel: Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. It draws on an exhaustive body of advertisements presented at the airport, on a series of interviews with the players of the advertising field and with 48 departing passengers. The category of mobility at stake in the advertisements is situated in the context of the advertising industry, of the placing of advertisements and their reception at the airport. The analysis shows that transportation places are privileged places for expressing and reproducing a vision of the social world of social elites for which the use of air transportation is conceived as a paradigmatic example of expression of social status through spatial mobility.; L’objectif de cet article est d’identifier les logiques de construction et de naturalisation de la catégorie de mobilité par l’étude de la publicité d’un lieu de passage très fréquenté. L’analyse porte sur un corpus exhaustif de publicités de l’aéroport de Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle et sur une série d’entretiens, réalisés auprès des acteurs du champ publicitaire et de 48 passagers en partance. La catégorie de mobilité mise en jeu par les publicités est replacée dans le cadre de la production de l’industrie publicitaire, de son implantation et de sa réception à l’aéroport, dans le prolongement des analyses portées par les cultural studies. Son étude montre que les lieux de transport sont des sites privilégiés d’expression et d’actualisation des normes et des valeurs de la mobilité catégorisées par certaines élites marchandes, pour lesquelles l’usage du transport aérien est conçu comme un exemple paradigmatique d’affirmation de statut social par la mobilité spatiale.
