The Big-Four is a popular typology used to assess behavior through categorical means, and it’s four dichotomous dimensions have been found to associate with the cognitive patterns of individuals. Analyses have found that certain types are disfavored by traditional education, particularly within mathematics. This study aimed at investigating the associations between Big-Four types, work interests, and preferred learning strategies using the interest- and personality-assessment called Utdanningstesten. Several hypotheses were put forward regarding which connections were expected to be found. This study also sought to analyze the validity and reliability of Utdanningstesten as a Big-Four predictor, through test-retest and inter-rater reliability tests with both Big-Four tests and a Big-Five test. Two samples were analyzed in this thesis: A “validation” sample consisting primarily of students from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), and a pre-sampled “explorative” sample containing all answer from the individuals that took Utdanningstesten in 2016-2020. In the “validation” sample, Kappa inter-rater reliability coefficients were estimated to assess Utdanningstesten’s validity. Two-sample T-tests were also done to check whether the contradicting Big-Four types scored differently in the Big-Five. In the “explorative” sample, PCA and LDA was applied to explore any type-dependent tendencies, and classification models were made to assess the effectivity of each method. Statistical models were also made to assess multiple variables’ ability to predict perception of mathematics and preferred learning strategies. I found that there were differences between the cognitive types for both perception of mathematics and preferred learnings strategies. However, effects were only noticed for unidimensional types and letter pairs – particularly the function pair (Sensing/Intuitive–Thinking/Feeling type) –, and not the full 4-letter types. Intuitive and Extraverted types were often found to disfavor math. I also found that Utdanningstesten did well in test-retest analysis. However, weaker results were noted in the inter-reliability tests. Although the questionnaire seems to do a satisfactory job at predicting the Introvert/Extravert and Perceiving/Judging type, it performs poorer predicting the Sensing/Intuitive type. My results suggests that it could be advantageous to incorporate personality type theory into education and how it is structured. Utdanningstesten may be utilized, but with caution. Tidligere studier har funnet at noen persontyper sidelinjes av den tradisjonelle undervisningsstilen, spesielt innenfor matematikk. Denne studien tok sikte på å undersøke assosiasjonene mellom Big-Four typer, arbeidsinteresser, og prefererte læringsstrategier, gjennom å bruke en interesse- og personlighets-undersøkelse kalt Utdanningstesten. Det ble fremsatt flere hypoteser rundt hvilke sammenhenger det var forventet å finne. Jeg søkte også etter å analysere validiteten og reliabiliteten til Utdanningstesten som en Big-Four-prediktor, gjennom test-retest og inter-rater reliabilitetstester med både Big-Four og en Big-Five test. To utvalg ble evaluert i denne studien: Et «validering»-utvalg, som primært besto av studenter fra Norges miljø- og biovitenskapelige universitet (NMBU), samt et forhånds-innsamlet «eksplorativt» utvalg som inneholdt alle svar fra individer som tok testen i tidsrommet 2016-2020. I valideringsutvalget ble Kappa inter-rater reliabilitets koeffisienter estimert for å vurdere Utdanningstestens validitet. Toutvalgs T-tester ble også kjørt for å sjekke hvorvidt de motsatte Big-Four typene skåret forskjellig i Big-Five. I det eksplorative utvalget ble PCA og LDA utført for å undersøke eventuelle typeavhengige tendenser, og klassifikasjonsmodeller ble laget for å vurdere effektiviteten til hver metode. Statistiske modeller ble også laget for å vurdere variablers evne til å predikere matematikk-persepsjon eller foretrukne læringsstrategier. Jeg fant at det var forskjeller mellom de kognitive typene for både matematikkpersepsjon og foretrukne læringsstrategier. Slike forskjeller ble derimot bare funnet mellom unidimensjonale og parede typer – spesielt funksjonsparet (Sansende/Intuitiv-Tenkende/Følende) –, og ikke for de fullstendige 4- bokstavtypene. Intuitive og Ekstroverte individer tenderte til å mislike matte. Jeg fant også at Utdanningstesten gjorde det bra i test-retest analyse. Det ble imidlertid notert svakere resultater på tvers av persontypetester. Selv om spørreskjemaet ser ut til å gjøre en tilfredsstillende jobb med å forutsi typene Introvert/Ekstrovert og Kontekstuell/Digital (Perceiving/Judging), presterer testen dårligere i å forutsi Sansende/Intuitiv-typen. Mine resultater tyder på at det kan være fordelaktig å inkorporere personlighetstypeteori til den pedagogiske praksis. Utdanningstesten kan benyttes, men med forsiktighet. M-BIAS

The survey of consumer expenditure is a national survey conducted by Statistics Norway (SSB) with the purpose of collecting detailed data about Norwegian households’ annual consumption of different goods and services. The survey has up until its most recent publication in 2012 relied on employees at SSB to manually categorise all registered expenditures into COICOP (Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose) item codes to produce consumption statistics. This has involved large workloads and high implementation costs, and because of this, SSB wants to modernise and improve the efficiency of the survey for its next planned implementation in 2022. This study is the result of a 3-month collaboration with SSB to explore the application of supervised machine learning for classification of consumer goods to 5-digit COICOP codes. The purpose of this study has been to explore the potential of using machine learning to automate parts of the survey of consumer expenditure. This thesis demonstrates how different data sets from separate sources can be combined into a COICOP training data set that can be used to develop and evaluate COICOP classification models. Furthermore, this study explores how these models can be incorporated into a ”human-in-the-loop”-based classification system to facilitate automatic classification of consumer goods while also maintaining sufficient levels of data quality. The findings indicate that supervised machine learning is a suited method for classifying consumer goods into 5-digit COICOP codes. Additionally, the results show that the models’ prediction probabilities are good indicators of where misclassifications occur. Together, these findings show a promising potential for implementation of a ”human-in-the-loop”-based classification system for reliable classification of consumer goods. At the same time, the findings uncover important limitations with the data used in this thesis, as the models were trained on data that the survey of consumer expenditure will not be based on. This thesis has used data sets that were available, and these were not necessarily the most relevant. Therefore, it is not expected that the developed models will provide immediate value to the objectives of SSB without first being trained on more relevant data. Forbruksundersøkelsen er en nasjonal undersøkelse som er utført av Statistisk Sentralbyrå (SSB) med den hensikt å samle inn detaljert forbruksstatistikk om norske husholdninger. Inntil dens foreløpig siste gjennomføring i 2012, har ansatte ved SSB måttet manuelt kode alle registrerte varekjøp inn i COICOP (Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose) varekoder for å produsere forbruksstatistikk fra undersøkelsen. Dette har medført store arbeidsmengder og høye kostnader, og SSB ønsker derfor nå å modernisere og effektivisere undersøkelsen i forbindelse med dens neste planlagte gjennomføring i 2022. Denne oppgaven er et resultat av et 3 måneders samarbeid med SSB for å utforske anvendelse av veiledet maskinlæring for å klassifisere forbruksvarer i 5-sifrede COICOP varegrupper. Dette har hatt som hensikt å kartlegge effektiviseringspotensialet ved å bruke maskinlæring til å automatisere deler av forbruksundersøkelsen. I denne oppgaven demonstreres det hvordan ulike datasett fra ulike kilder kan kombineres til et COICOP treningsdatasett som kan brukes til å utvikle og evalurere COICOP klassifiseringsmodeller. Videre utforsker oppgaven hvordan disse modellene kan brukes i kombinasjon med et ”human-in-the-loop”-basert klassifieringssystem forå tilrettelegge for automatisk klassifiering av varer og samtidig ivareta tilstrekkelig datakvalitet. Funnene antyder at veiledet maskinlæring er en egnet metode for klassifisering av varer til 5-sifrede COICOP varekoder, og i tillegg viser resultatene at modellenes prediksjonssannsynligheter gir en god indikasjon for hvor feil oppstår. Dette gir et godt grunnlag for bruk av et ”human-in-the-loop”-basert klassifiseringssystem for pålitelig klassifisering av forbruksvarer. Samtidig avdekker funnene sentrale begrensninger med dataen brukt i denne oppgaven, da modellene ble trent på data som forbruksundersøkelsen ikke vil basere seg på. Bakgrunnen for dette er at oppgaven har brukt de data som var tilgjengelige, og disse var ikke nødvendigvis de mest relevante. Det kan dermed ikke forventes at de utviklede modellene gir umiddelbar verdi til SSBs formål uten først å bli trent på mer relevante data. M-IØ

I dette prosjektet har ein freista å avdekkje samanhengar mellom personlegdomstypar og opplevinga av to undervisningsfilmar om same tema, men med forskjelleg innhald og oppbygning. Alle deltakarane fekk sjå begge filmane i vilkårleggjort rekkefølgje. Talfesting av opplevinga vart utført ved spørjeundersøking før og etter kvar film, med kontinuerleg måling av galvanisk hudrespons, blikksporing og bruk av kjenslegjenkjenningsalgoritme samstundes som studentane såg begge filmane. Samanhengane mellom dei forskjellege responsane vart grundig undersøkt, det same vart parvise observasjonar innad i same type respons. Korkje statistiske testar eller visuell inspeksjon av spredningsdiagram kunne med sikkerheit fastslå samanhengar mellom personlegdomstypar og responsane som skilde seg frå tilfeldige kontrollvariablar. Samanhengar mellom responsar og innad i kvar einskild responstype var kun observert ved sporadiske tilhøve, som og kan skrive seg frå tilfeldige samantreff. Om det i røynda er svært stor variasjon mellom respondentane si oppleving av forskjellege undervisningsmetodar samstundes som personlegdomstype beskriv svært lite av variasjonen kan vere ei mogelegheit. Ei anna mogelegheit kan vere alle dei svakheitene ved forsøket som har blitt avdekt under arbeidet med prosjektet. I dette einskilde forsøket skulle alle svakheitene syne seg å vere forsøket si største styrke. Komande prosjekt kan trekkje stor lærdom frå dette forsøket, særskilt om korleis ein ikkje skal førebu forsøk når biometriske sensorar skal nyttast. Det vonast og at kvar svakheit avdekkja i dette forsøket kan, saman med implikasjonar for vidare arbeid, inspirere nye og betre forsøk for å belyse studentar sine opplevingar av forskjellege undervisningsmetodar. I mange høver er studentar si oppleving av forskjellege undervisningsmetodar vel så spanande som deira prestasjonar målt i poeng og karakterar. Den store variasjonen i respondentane sine opplevingar fordrar til variasjon i undersvisingsmetodane. Ikkje berre for den einskilde student si oppleving, men og for førebuing mot det komande arbeidslivet der ein med stort sannsyn må kunne forventast å tileigne seg kunnskap og ferdigheiter på fleire forskjellege måtar. This project aimed at investigating associations between students’ personality characteristics and their experience when exposed to two educational films on the same statistical topic, but with different content and structure. All students watched both films in randomized order. The students’ experience was measured by a self-report questionnaire before and after each film, and by continuous measurement of galvanic skin response, eye-tracker and assessment of emotions, through an emotion recognition algorithm. The associations between the different types of responses were thoroughly investigated, along with pairwise observations within the same type of response. Neither statistical test nor visual inspection of color coded scatterplots revealed associations between the student’s personality characteristics and their responses, that exceeded those found with random control variables. The few statistically significant associations which were found, may be attributed to chance alone. One possible explanation of the lack of significant associations is that the variation in the students’ responses to the educational films is large, and that the amount of variation explained by the personality characteristics is small, in comparison. The many weaknesses of the study, that unfolded during the working process, represent another plausible explanation of the lack of positive findings. However, the weaknesses turned out to be the project’s biggest strength. Future projects can benefit a lot from this work, especially concerning how not to design educational experiments that rely on output from biometric sensors. Every flaw in the design and conduction of this study, and every consecutive dead end in potential analyses, which were detected and documented, should inspire new and better studies that aims to shed light on students’ experiences of different educational methods. Students’ responses to different educational methods are as interesting as their performance measured in points or grades. The large variation in experiences demonstrated in this study can encourage variation in educational methods: Both to enhance students’ experiences during their life at the university, but also as a preparation for future jobs where they can be expected to acquire knowledge and skills in several different ways.
