Abstract

Delimiting biogeographic regions based on occurrence data is an interesting approach to investigating processes behind biodiversity distribution patterns. Comparing spatial scales and identifying predictor variables of biogeographic regions have wide application for biodiversity conservation. In this study we used a comprehensive database containing more than thirty years of horse fly records to estimate species richness, endemism, and species composition, and regionalize the Amazon biogeographically. We compared five spatial scales defined by grid size (1–5º), and test five hypotheses (elevation, climate, vegetation cover, and two regionalizations from the literature) to identify predictors of the biogeographic regions. Endemism, species richness and composition were predicted by different sets of predictor variables, although the models were highly dependent on spatial scale. We identified three well-defined biogeographic regions, which have been formed by a combination of geographic distance, climate and historical factors converging with some theories proposed for mammals. Our models indicated dispersal as a key factor for regionalization, as it can be constrained by a combination of climate and historical processes changing habitats over time, although this finding was highly dependent on spatial scale. Abstract

Morphological patterns may vary spatially in response to adaptations to regional environmental conditions. In fossorial animals, edaphic gradients potentially predict intra and interspecific morphological variation because they can limit dispersal and select morphotypes. We measured morphological traits of South American worm lizards, including three Amphisbaena and two Leposternon species, to test whether inter- and intraspecific morphological variation and morphotype distribution are predicted by edaphic gradients measured at different soil profiles. Interspecifically, we found that the variation in head length is mainly predicted by the chemical edaphic structure, which can be explained by spatial variation in prey availability. The variation in the width of the prefrontal and frontal shields was mainly predicted by clay and sand-soil contents, which can be explained by relationships of force and friction associated with digging. Intraspecifically, we found that the effects of edaphic gradients on morphological variation reflects the level of specialization to dig, since the most adapted species were mainly affected by variables measured in deeper soil profiles. We also show that soil-mediated intraspecific morphological variation shape morphotype distribution across different biomes that form the South American dry diagonal, which are discussed in light of biological, ecological, and biogeographic premises. Abstract

CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico O seguinte trabalho busca investigar os efeitos do Programa Cidades Digitais sobre os resultados educacionais de crianças e adolescentes residentes nos municípios que são contemplados com sua infraestrutura. Nesse sentido, explora a introdução escalonada da intervenção aos municípios para estimar seus impactos sobre as Proficiências de Língua Portuguesa e Matemática da Prova Brasil utilizando certas variações dos modelos de diferenças em diferenças com múltiplas entradas, ou os chamados estudos de eventos. Como resultado da estimação principal, conclui-se que existe uma queda de desempenho em ambas as matérias para alunos do 5º Ano do Ensino Fundamental. Contudo, tais resultados não são mantidos após a retirada do Grupo de 2013 do modelo de regressão. Após a realização de uma série de variações em relação ao nível de investigação (do indivíduo para o município) e ao Grupo de Controle, não se encontra nenhum resultado destacável. As variações apresentam efeitos nulos e/ou significativos para o mesmo caso que conta também com o Grupo de 2013 The following study is meant to investigate the effects generated by the Digital City Program on the educational results achieved by children and teenagers living in citys contemplated by the program. In order to achieve such result the study explores the usage of the staggered adoption to estimate the impact in the following proficiencys, Portuguese and Maths featured in a exam called “Prova Brasil”, for this prediction to occur a few variations of the diff-in-diff method where applied, you can also call them event study. As a result of the main estimative, we can conclude that there is a performance drop in both proficiencys when it comes to students currently enrolled in the fifth grade. However, when you remove the 2013 group away from the regression the result is not maintened. After applying a series of variations related to the level of investigation (from the individual to the city) and the control group, not a single result stands out. The variations have nule effects and/or significance to the 2013 group case.

Abstract

The classic Wallace's riverine barrier hypothesis (RBH) has been widely invoked to explain species distribution and evolutionary divergence throughout Amazonia. Dispersal and gene flow limited by the inability to cross a river restricts geographic distribution to an interfluvial zone, which causes different assemblage compositions between opposite river banks. In this study, we sampled frogs and Squamata reptiles along the Jari River, a tributary of the lower Amazon River, to test the RBH at assemblage level. We used non-metric multidimensional scaling based on species abundance to compare assemblage composition between river banks. We found that 63.6% of the frogs sampled are absent or occur in low abundances on one of the river banks, which resulted in distinct assemblages between banks. This finding supported the barrier-effect as a predictor of the regional frog diversity, which is remarkable, since the Jari River is considerably narrower than all the Amazonian rivers for which RHB has been supported. However, although some reptile species were restricted to one of the river banks, assemblage composition did not differ between banks. This finding suggests that the barrier-effect should not be extrapolated to other groups of organisms, since good dispersers can homogenize assemblages between river banks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a case of human intoxication due to a snakebite by the opisthoglyphous dipsadid Thamnodynastes lanei. A 26-year-old man was bitten on the right hand and was not medicated. Bleeding lasted a few seconds, while paresthesia, chills, and headache persisted for up to 10 hours. The pain disappeared after a week, and the edema, itching, and prickling persisted for another 3 days. Although this patient’s symptoms were typical of bites by South American opisthoglyphous snakes, they persisted longer than those of bites by some congeneric species. Our report adds a species to the list of medically relevant snakes.

Abstract

Biodiversity data, particularly species occurrence and abundance, are indispensable for testing empirical hypothesis in natural sciences. However, datasets built for research programmes do not often meet FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) principles, which raises questions about data quality, accuracy and availability. The 21st century has markedly been a new era for data science and analytics and every effort to aggregate, standardise, filter and share biodiversity data from multiple sources have become increasingly necessary. In this study, we propose a framework for refining and conforming secondary biodiversity data to FAIR standards to make them available for use such as macroecological modelling and other studies. We relied on a Darwin Core base model to standardise and further facilitate the curation and validation of data related including the occurrence and abundance of multiple taxa of a region that encompasses estuarine ecosystems in an ecotonal area bordering the easternmost Amazonia. We further discuss the significance of feeding standardised public data repositories to advance scientific progress and highlight their role in contributing to the biodiversity management and conservation. 48. Effects of abamectin and acetamiprid pesticides on the survival and behavior of Scaptotrigona aff. xanthotricha (Apidae, Meliponini).

Abstract

Pesticides have been described as a major cause of bee mortality, and thus are predictors of population decline and decrease in pollination services. Standardized tests with Apis mellifera are already common, and there is a need to create adequate parameters for the native solitary and eusocial species of stingless bees. In this study, we evaluated lethal dosages (LD50 and LD90), lethal time (LT), and sub-lethal effects (SLE) of two pesticides used in soybean crops, abamectin, and acetamiprid, in Scaptotrigona aff. xanthotricha. All tests were performed through contact poisoning. The LD50 and LD90 for acetamiprid were higher than those obtained for abamectin. Survival analysis of S. aff. xanthotricha exposed to LD90 indicated significant differences between pesticides. The LT50 under abamectin (8.25 hours) was significantly lower than acetamiprid (14.25 hours). Considering the PER tests, our results suggest that positive responses to food offerings were reduced by pesticide effects. It was also observed that only the acetamiprid affected the locomotion of the bees. Our results revealed that both pesticides are highly toxic to S. aff. xanthotricha and that acetamiprid was the most toxic for all parameters evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The fringed leaf frog, Cruziohyla craspedopus is rarely sampled in the Brazilian Amazon, probably due to low detection probability associated with its arboreal habit. The knowledge about the species’ distribution stems from successive additions of occasional occurrence records, which indicate that the species is widely distributed throughout Amazonia. We present new occurrence records to update the geographic range of the species, which is hereby extended 224 km to the northeast. We also present morphological data from collected specimens and discuss the updated range from the geographic and ecological points of view. We show that the range of the leaf frog crosses several main tributaries along the southern bank of the Amazonas River, although the species occurrence is apparently limited by a minimum tree cover of 70%.
