Objective: Approximately one third of individuals worldwide have not received a COVID-19 vaccine. Although studies have investigated risk factors linked to severe COVID-19 among unvaccinated people with rheumatic diseases (RDs), we know less about whether these factors changed as the pandemic progressed. We aimed to identify risk factors associated with severe COVID-19 in unvaccinated individuals in different pandemic epochs corresponding to major variants of concern., Methods: Patients with RDs and COVID-19 were entered into the COVID-19 Global Rheumatology Alliance Registry between March 2020 and June 2022. An ordinal logistic regression model (not hospitalized, hospitalized, and death) was used with date of COVID-19 diagnosis, age, sex, race and/or ethnicity, comorbidities, RD activity, medications, and the human development index (HDI) as covariates. The main analysis included all unvaccinated patients across COVID-19 pandemic epochs; subanalyses stratified patients according to RD types., Results: Among 19,256 unvaccinated people with RDs and COVID-19, those who were older, male, had more comorbidities, used glucocorticoids, had higher disease activity, or lived in lower HDI regions had worse outcomes across epochs. For those with rheumatoid arthritis, sulfasalazine and B-cell-depleting therapy were associated with worse outcomes, and tumor necrosis factor inhibitors were associated with improved outcomes. In those with connective tissue disease or vasculitis, B-cell-depleting therapy was associated with worse outcomes., Conclusion: Risk factors for severe COVID-19 outcomes were similar throughout pandemic epochs in unvaccinated people with RDs. Ongoing efforts, including vaccination, are needed to reduce COVID-19 severity in this population, particularly in those with medical and social vulnerabilities identified in this study., (© 2023 American College of Rheumatology.)

The comprehension of potentiometric pH sensors with polymeric thin films for new and advanced applications is a constant technological need. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between the sensitivity and correlation coefficient of potentiometric pH sensors and the structure-property relationship of polyaniline thin films. The effect of the deposition method on the sample's properties was evaluated. Galvanostatically electrodeposited and spin-coated polyaniline thin films were used as the sensing stage. Samples were electrodeposited with a current density of 0.5 mA/cm 2 for 300, 600, and 1200 s and were spin coated for 60 s with an angular velocity of 500, 1000, and 2000 rpm. The electrodeposited set of films presented higher average sensitivity, 73.4 ± 1.3 mV/pH, compared to the spin-coated set, 59.2 ± 2.5 mV/pH. The electrodeposited films presented higher sensitivity due to their morphology, characterized by a larger roughness and thickness compared to spin-coated ones, favoring the potentiometric response. Also, their oxidation state, evaluated with cyclic voltammetry and UV-VIS spectroscopy, corroborates their sensing performance. The understanding of the structure-property relationship of the polymeric films affecting the pH detection is discussed based on the characteristics of the deposition method used.

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and short-term efficacy of uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) in patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids., Materials and Methods: Bilateral UFE was performed in 61 patients with symptomatic uterine leiomyomata during a 16-month period. Imaging was performed before the procedure and at 3 months and 1 year after the procedure. Questionnaires were obtained at regular intervals after the procedure to assess patient outcome., Results: All procedures but one were technically successful. Mean clinical follow-up was 8.7 months. Minor complications occurred in five patients during the follow-up period. All were treated without permanent sequelae. Menstrual bleeding was improved in 89%, with 81% of patients moderately to markedly improved. Pelvic pain and pressure was improved in 96% of patients, with moderate to marked improvement in 79%. At initial imaging follow-up (mean, 4.4 months postprocedure), median uterine volume decreased 34% (P = .0001) and the median dominant fibroid volume decreased 50% (P = .0001). Imaging at 1 year (mean, 12.3 months) after the procedure showed continued reduction with a median uterine volume reduction of 48% (P = .0002) and median dominant fibroid volume decrease of 78% (P = .0002)., Conclusion: In the authors' initial clinical experience, UFE appears effective in controlling symptoms and substantially reducing fibroid volume with few complications.
