We consider several classes of degenerate hyperbolic equations involving delay terms and suitable nonlinearities. The idea is to rewrite the problems in an abstract way and, using semigroup theory and energy method, we study well posedness and stability. Moreover, some illustrative examples are given.

In this paper we study the stability of two different problems. The first one is a one-dimensional degenerate wave equation with degenerate damping, incorporating a drift term and a leading operator in non-divergence form. In the second problem we consider a system that couples degenerate and non-degenerate wave equations, connected through transmission, and subject to a single dissipation law at the boundary of the non-degenerate equation. In this paper we consider the fourth order operators A1u := (au")" and A2u := au"" in divergence form and non divergence form, respectively, where a, defined in [0, 1] with values in R+, degenerates in an interior point of the interval. Using the semigroup technique, under suitable assumptions on a, we study the generation property of these operators associated to generalized Wentzell boundary conditions, proving the well posedness of the corresponding parabolic problems.

In this paper we focus on the null controllability problem for the heat equation with the so-called inverse square potential and a memory term. To this aim, we first establish the null controllability for a nonhomogeneous singular heat equation by a new Carleman inequality with weights which do not blow up at t=0. We show the existence of nontrivial solutions for a class of highly quasilinear problems in which the governing operators depend on the unknown function. We establish Carleman estimates for singular/degenerate parabolic Dirichlet problems with degeneracy and singularity occurring in the interior of the spatial domain. Our results are completely new, since this situation is not covered by previous contributions for degeneracy and singularity on the boundary. In addition, we consider non smooth coefficients, thus preventing the use of standard calculations in this framework.

In this paper we study well-posedness and asymptotic stability for a class of nonlinear second-order evolution equations with intermittent delay damping. More precisely, a delay feedback and an undelayed one act alternately in time. We show that, under suitable conditions on the feedback operators, asymptotic stability results are available. Concrete examples included in our setting are illustrated. We give also stability results for an abstract model with alternate positive-negative damping, without delay.

We study two identification problems in relation with a strongly degenerate parabolic diffusion equation characterized by a vanishing diffusion coefficient $u\in W^{1,\infty},$ with the property $\frac{1}{u}\notin L^{1}. $ The aim is to identify $u$ from certain observations on the solution, by a technique of nonlinear optimal control with control in coefficients. The existence of a controller $u$ which is searched in $% W^{1,\infty}$ and the determination of the optimality conditions are given for homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. An approximating problem further introduced allows a better characterization of the optimality conditions, due to the supplementary regularity of the approximating state and dual functions and to a convergence result. Finally, an identification problem with final time observation and homogeneous Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions in the state system is considered. We study the existence of non-trivial, non-negative periodic solutions for systems of singular-degenerate parabolic equations with nonlocal terms and satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions. The method employed in this paper is based on the Leray-Schauder topological degree theory. However, verifying the conditions under which such a theory applies is more involved due to the presence of the singularity.
