International audience; In this study coatings of kaolin and talc particles were successfully applied on the surface of polyamide 12 powder intended for laser sintering (LS). Microscopic observations revealed that using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as surface modifier for fillers led to a better coverage of polymer grains with a surface coverage between 6 and 16% as a function of filler type and content. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements showed that the addition of talc and kaolin led to an increase in the crystallization temperature of PA12, but at the expense of processability. Process parameters were optimized in order to manufacture LS samples with the different coated powders. Fire behavior assessed by cone calorimetry showed that the use of CMC resulted in a significant decrease in the peak of heat release rate depending on the filler type and content. This behavior can be partially explained by an interaction between CMC, fillers and polymer, with the formation of amide linkage between carboxyl part of CMC and amine end groups of polyamide, resulting in an increase in the complex viscosity of materials.

International audience; In this study, the goal was to compatibilize flax natural fibers (which are inherently polar) with mostly dispersive polymers, while proposing a way to recover greenhouse gases or refrigerants such as CF4 or C2F5H. Such gases exhibit a high global warming potentials (GWPs) and their recovery at the end of their lifecycle is difficult. Therefore, these two representative problematic gases were used as plasma precursor to graft fluorine atoms onto the flax fiber surface. Chemical investigation (FT-IR, 19F NMR and XPS spectroscopies), demonstrates the covalent grafting of fluorine atoms at the fiber surface, that opens the route of tailoring the surface chemistry of flax fibers. These modifications induced a decrease of the fiber polarity, which allows the treated fibers to become perfectly compatible with mostly dispersive polymer. Moreover, both mechanical properties and fluorine release during fibers combustion were investigated and any negative impact was evidenced. Therefore, thanks to the plasma fluorination, the gap between the surface energies of the fibers and mostly dispersive polymer matrix was reduced improving the wettability of the fibers through an eco-friendly way. This phenomenon promising an improvement in the mechanical performance of eco-composites reinforced with these fluorinated fibers.

International audience; Because of their specific properties, vegetal fibers are increasingly used as sustainable polymer reinforcementsfor eco-composites. Nevertheless, their polar character hinders them from being used more frequently at in-dustrial scale due to their incompatibility with mostly dispersive polymers (the cheapest and most commonones). In this study, direct fluorination treatment was carried out to covalently graft fluorine atom at the outmostsurface of flax fibers. Such a grafting has been proved by FT-IR, 19F NMR and XPS spectroscopies, and thesecharacterizations allowed to understand chemical change due to the treatment. This chemical modificationinduced an augmentation of the dispersive character of flax fibers, by significantly lowering the polar componentof surface energy without significant change of the dispersive component. Young’s modulus was also maintained.Thereby, treated fibers become perfectly compatible with hydrophobic polymer, and an improvement in themechanical performance of the resulting composite is expected according to the literature.

International audience; This study evaluated the potential of using poly(lactic acid)/poly(ε-caprolactone) (PLA/PCL) blends for fused filament fabrication (FFF) and assembly with pure PLA for biomedical applications. PLA/PCL binary blends were meltblended in a twin-screw extruder at different ratios (20/80 to 80/20) and then formed into filaments with a calibrated diameter for FFF. The microstructure, surface properties, and rheological and mechanical behaviors of the blends were assessed. The blends were immiscible but showed signs of adhesion between the phases. It was determined that the fibrillar morphology of inclusions for PLA/PCL ratios higher than 30/70 proved to be driven by the manufacturing process. The tensile mechanical behaviors of printed and injected samples were similar, and their Young's modulus was simulated using Halpin-Tsai and Mori Tanaka models based on the sample microstructure. The ductility of the blends was strongly driven by the behavior of its majority phase. Finally, specific samples were designed to characterize the tensile strength between PLA and its blends by entangling layers of both materials. The strength of the assembly was found to be dependent on the phase that was continuous and was governed by the strength and the viscosity of the blend.

Background:No predictive markers for chemotherapy activity have been validated in gastric cancer (GC). The potential value of class III β-tubulin (TUBB3) as biomarker for prognosis and resistance to taxane-based therapy was reported.Methods:We analyzed GC samples of patients enrolled in the Intergroup Trial of Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Adenocarcinoma of the Stomach (ITACA-S), a randomized adjuvant study comparing 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin (5-FU/LV) and docetaxel-based sequential chemotherapy. TUBB3 was quantitated by selected reaction monitoring mass spectrometry and patients were stratified using a threshold of 750 attomoles per microgram (amol/µg). Cox proportional modeling and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were used to assess the impact of TUBB3 expression on overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival.Results:Patients with TUBB3 protein levels >750 and Conclusions:The quantification of TUBB3 might be considered as a negative predictive biomarker of benefit from taxane-based therapy in GC. Studies are needed to evaluate its role in the neoadjuvant setting.

Summary Background The triplet FOLFOXIRI (fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin, and irinotecan) plus bevacizumab showed improved outcomes for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, compared with FOLFIRI (fluorouracil, leucovorin, and irinotecan) plus bevacizumab. However, the actual benefit of the upfront exposure to the three cytotoxic drugs compared with a preplanned sequential strategy of doublets was not clear, and neither was the feasibility or efficacy of therapies after disease progression. We aimed to compare a preplanned strategy of upfront FOLFOXIRI followed by the reintroduction of the same regimen after disease progression versus a sequence of mFOLFOX6 (fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin) and FOLFIRI doublets, in combination with bevacizumab. Methods TRIBE2 was an open-label, phase 3, randomised study of patients aged 18–75 years with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status of 2, with unresectable, previously untreated metastatic colorectal cancer, recruited from 58 Italian oncology units. Patients were stratified according to centre, ECOG performance status, primary tumour location, and previous adjuvant chemotherapy. A randomisation system incorporating a minimisation algorithm was used to randomly assign patients (1:1) via a masked web-based allocation procedure to two different treatment strategies. In the control group, patients received first-line mFOLFOX6 (85 mg/m2 of intravenous oxaliplatin concurrently with 200 mg/m2 of leucovorin over 120 min; 400 mg/m2 intravenous bolus of fluorouracil; 2400 mg/m2 continuous infusion of fluorouracil for 48 h) plus bevacizumab (5 mg/kg intravenously over 30 min) followed by FOLFIRI (180 mg/m2 of intravenous irinotecan over 120 min concurrently with 200 mg/m2 of leucovorin; 400 mg/m2 intravenous bolus of fluorouracil; 2400 mg/m2 continuous infusion of fluorouracil for 48 h) plus bevacizumab after disease progression. In the experimental group, patients received FOLFOXIRI (165 mg/m2 of intravenous irinotecan over 60 min; 85 mg/m2 intravenous oxaliplatin concurrently with 200 mg/m2 of leucovorin over 120 min; 3200 mg/m2 continuous infusion of fluorouracil for 48 h) plus bevacizumab followed by the reintroduction of the same regimen after disease progression. Combination treatments were repeated every 14 days for up to eight cycles followed by fluorouracil and leucovorin (at the same dose administered at the last induction cycle) plus bevacizumab maintenance until disease progression, unacceptable adverse events, or consent withdrawal. Patients and investigators were not masked. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival 2, defined as the time from randomisation to disease progression on any treatment given after first disease progression, or death, analysed by intention to treat. Safety was assessed in patients who received at least one dose of their assigned treatment. Study recruitment is complete and follow-up is ongoing. This trial is registered with Clinicaltrials.gov , NCT02339116 . Findings Between Feb 26, 2015, and May 15, 2017, 679 patients were randomly assigned and received treatment (340 in the control group and 339 in the experimental group). At data cut-off (July 30, 2019) median follow-up was 35·9 months (IQR 30·1–41·4). Median progression-free survival 2 was 19·2 months (95% CI 17·3–21·4) in the experimental group and 16·4 months (15·1–17·5) in the control group (hazard ratio [HR] 0·74, 95% CI 0·63–0·88; p=0·0005). During the first-line treatment, the most frequent of all-cause grade 3–4 events were diarrhoea (57 [17%] vs 18 [5%]), neutropenia (168 [50%] vs 71 [21%]), and arterial hypertension (25 [7%] vs 35 [10%]) in the experimental group compared with the control group. Serious adverse events occurred in 84 (25%) patients in the experimental group and in 56 (17%) patients in the control group. Eight treatment-related deaths were reported in the experimental group (two intestinal occlusions, two intestinal perforations, two sepsis, one myocardial infarction, and one bleeding) and four in the control group (two occlusions, one perforation, and one pulmonary embolism). After first disease progression, no substantial differences in the incidence of grade 3 or 4 adverse events were reported between the control and experimental groups, with the exception of neurotoxicity, which was only reported in the experimental group (six [5%] of 132 patients). Serious adverse events after disease progression occurred in 20 (15%) patients in the experimental group and 25 (12%) in the control group. Three treatment-related deaths after first disease progression were reported in the experimental group (two intestinal occlusions and one sepsis) and four in the control group (one intestinal occlusion, one intestinal perforation, one cerebrovascular event, and one sepsis). Interpretation Upfront FOLFOXIRI plus bevacizumab followed by the reintroduction of the same regimen after disease progression seems to be a preferable therapeutic strategy to sequential administration of chemotherapy doublets, in combination with bevacizumab, for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer selected according to the study criteria. The aim of this study was to investigate the structure–properties relationship of ternary blends of polylactide/polyhydroxybutyrate (PLA/PHB)/organo-modified layered silicate (OMLS). Morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical characterizations were performed to understand the influence of OMLS on PLA/PHB (70/30 wt%) formulations optimized through modifications with an epoxy-based chain extender, the use of a plasticizer, as well as the influence of the type of processing route: injection molding or fused filament fabrication. The addition of OMLS allowed the blend compatibility to be improved, with the appearance of a single melting peak on DSC thermograms at 146 °C, as well as the reduction in the size of the nodules for the injected molded specimens. Concerning the printed samples, AFM analysis revealed a coalescence of the PHB minor phase due to its degradation. This phenomenon was dramatically enhanced in the presence of OMLS and has been ascribed to the degradation of both the organo-modifier and the PHB minor phase in the blend. Rheological and mechanical tests (17% decrease in Young’s modulus and 13% decrease in elongation at break) confirmed this degradation that would have occurred during the manufacturing of the filaments and the printing of specimens due to additional thermal and cooling steps.

International audience; The estimation of solid surface energy is generally obtained through the determination of liquid/solid contact angles. Many questions arise in the literature about the appropriate contact angle to use (dynamic, quasi-static or static, measured at a macro or a micro-scale). Theoretically, equilibrium contact angles should be inserted into equations to determine surface energy components. However, for powders or porous materials more issues arise, notably due to the imbibition of the liquid into the medium. An apparent contact angle can be obtained using wicking tests and the modified Washburn equation. Nonetheless, Washburn hypotheses are not always respected or no longer valid during wicking meaning that this procedure could not allow to determine contact angles. This study has the aim to propose a new simple method to determine the surface energy components of powders and porous media. An experimental protocol coupled to a modified Jurin law is proposed. This protocol was applied to lignin particles used as reinforcement in polylactic acid (PLA). Some treatments were performed on lignin to improve the adhesion with PLA and the modifications due to the treatments were characterized. Reliable surface energy and components of untreated and treated lignin were obtained revealing the efficiency of the proposed method.

In the present work, the processability and fire behavior of parts made by the laser sintering (LS) of polyamide 12/rubber powder blends is studied. In order to evaluate some of the interactions that could take place during LS, three acrylonitrile butadiene rubbers (NBRs) were used, which included two that had different acrylonitrile (AN) contents, and one that had carboxylated rubber. The results show that the flowability of the powders is strongly dependent on the rubber used. For the carboxylated rubber, a good flowability of the blend was observed, whereas the use of rubbers with different AN contents led to significant changes in the powder flowability, with a heterogeneous powder bed, and differences in the porosity as a function of the AN content. Furthermore, the addition of rubbers to polyamide 12 (PA12) entails an increase in the sintering window and, in particular, a change in the melting temperature of PA12 is noticed. Even though some changes in the crystallization and melting temperatures are observed, formulations containing 10 and 20 wt.% of rubbers could be processed using the same process parameters as PA12. Furthermore, the formulations containing carboxylated rubber show improved fire behavior, which is measured by a cone calorimeter, with reductions of about 45 and 65% in the peak of the heat release rate, compared to the PA12. Moreover, almost all of the samples evaluated in this study are classed as “Good” by the Flame Retardancy Index. This result can be partially explained by the formation of an amide linkage between the polyamide and NBR during processing, which could result in increases in the melt viscosities of these samples.

International audience; This work is focused on the preparation and the optimization of a biobased intumescent fire-retardant system (IFR) which was applied to a biopolymer such as PLA. This aliphatic biopolyester is obtained from agricultural plants and is recyclable and compostable in specific conditions. However, it has a poor thermal stability [1] and is very sensitive to hydrolysis [2]. In order to respect fire security standards, an IFR was designed using ammonium polyphosphate (APP), a common fire retardant and lignin which is a biobased by-product of the paper industry. Lignin has a good thermal stability and the ability to retard fire in composite materials by promoting the formation of char in association with APP [3]. The aim of the study is the optimization of the IFR and the chemical modification of lignin in order to prevent a trans-esterification between PLA and lignin that may break the polyester macromolecule. The first part of the study shows that an optimized ratio between APP and lignin is situated around 17/3. At this ratio, the IFR is more efficient with a significant reduction of the heat release rate (HRR) and a good fire retardancy capability (Figure 1). In addition, an encapsulated APP was also tested with lignin. The encapsulant improved the flame retardancy of the biocomposite with an enhancement of the char promotion. Finally, the last part of the work was focused on the chemical modification of lignin with esterification or phosphorylation. Chemical treatments showed an improvement of the quality of the PLA/lignin adhesion, due to the modification of the surface properties of lignin. The incorporation of phosphorus with lignin favors the intumescent reaction and the char promotion directly on the lignin particle. As a conclusion, lignin in association with APP was found to be efficient as IFR component for PLA, and beneficial as reinforcement for this polymer, applying adequate treatments to improve lignin surface properties and then the compatibility with PLA.

Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), an acute respiratory syndrome caused by a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), has rapidly spread worldwide, significantly affecting the outcome of a highly vulnerable group such as cancer patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical impact of COVID-19 infection on outcome and oncologic treatment of cancer patients. Patient and methods: We retrospectively enrolled cancer patients with laboratory and/or radiologic confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, admitted to our center from February to April 2020. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the clinical data and univariate analyses were performed to investigate the impact of anticancer treatment modifications due to COVID-19 outbreak on the short-term overall survival (OS). Results: Among 61 patients enrolled, 49 (80%) were undergoing anticancer treatment and 41 (67%) had metastatic disease. Most patients were men; median age was 68 years. Median OS was 46.6 days (40% of deaths occurred within 20 days from COVID-19 diagnosis). Among 59 patients with available data on therapeutic course, 46 experienced consequences on their anticancer treatment schedule. Interruption or a starting failure of the oncologic therapy correlated with significant shorter OS. Anticancer treatment delays did not negatively affect the OS. Lymphocytopenia development after COVID was significantly associated with worst outcome. Conclusions: COVID-19 diagnosis in cancer patients may affect their short-term OS, especially in case of interruption/starting failure of cancer therapy. Maintaining/delaying cancer therapy seems not to influence the outcome in selected patients with recent COVID-19 diagnosis.

This work highlights the possibility of obtaining peculiar morphologies by adding fumed silica into 80/20 polylactic acid/polyamide11 (PLA/PA11) blends. Two kinds of fumed silica (A200 and trimethoxyoctylsilane modified R805 fumed silica) were dispersed (by twin-screw extrusion, TSE) at a weight amount of 5% in neat PLA, neat PA11 and a 80/20 PLA/PA11 blend. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) was used to verify this 5 wt % amount. Oscillatory shear rheology tests were conducted on all the formulations: (1) on neat polymer nanocomposites (PLASi5, PLASiR5, PA11Si5, PA11SiR5), and (2) on polymer blend nanocomposites (PLA80Si5 and PLA80SiR5). Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) characterizations and laser granulometry were conducted. Microscopic analysis performed on polymer blend nanocomposites evidenced a localization of A200 silica in the PA11 dispersed phase and R805 silica at the PLA/PA11 interface. Frequency sweep tests on neat polymer nanocomposites revealed a pronounced gel-like behavior for PLASi5 and PA11SiR5, evidencing a high dispersion of A200 in PLA and R805 in PA11. A yield behavior was also evidenced for both PLA80Si5 and PLA80SiR5 blends. For the blend nanocomposites, PA11 dispersed phases were elongated in the presence of A200 silica and a quasi-co-continuous morphology was observed for PLA80Si5, whereas PLA80SiR5 exhibits bridges of silica nanoparticles between the PA11 dispersed phases.

Simple Summary The status of microsatellite instability (MSI-H) in gastric or gastroesophageal junction cancer (GC/GEJC) patients eligible for radical surgery proved to be prognostic for an improved survival outcome and predictive for poor/no benefit from the combination of adjuvant/peri-operative chemotherapy. MSI-H tumors display a high sensitivity to immunotherapy and exploratory studies showed that a pre-operative treatment with immune-checkpoint inhibitors may achieve elevated rates of pathological complete responses. The ongoing proof-of-concept INFINITY study is aimed at investigating the role of the combo-immunotherapy durvalumab plus tremelimumab as a neoadjuvant or potentially definitive treatment (avoiding surgery in case of complete clinical response) for MSI-H resectable GC/GEJC patients. Abstract In resectable gastric or gastroesophageal junction cancer (GC/GEJC), the powerful positive prognostic effect and the potential predictive value for a lack of benefit from the combination of adjuvant/peri-operative chemotherapy for the MSI-high status was demonstrated. Given the high sensitivity of MSI-high tumors for immunotherapy, exploratory trials showed that combination immunotherapy induces a high rate of complete pathological response (pCR), potentially achieving cancer cure without surgery. INFINITY is an ongoing phase II, multicentre, single-arm, multi-cohort trial investigating the activity and safety of tremelimumab and durvalumab as neoadjuvant (Cohort 1) or potentially definitive (Cohort 2) treatment for MSI-high/dMMR/EBV-negative, resectable GC/GEJC. About 310 patients will be pre-screened, to enroll a total of 31 patients, 18 and 13 in Cohort 1 and 2, at 25 Italian Centres. The primary endpoint of Cohort 1 is rate of pCR (ypT0N0) and negative ctDNA after neoadjuvant immunotherapy, of Cohort 2 is 2-year complete response rate, defined as absence of macroscopic or microscopic residual disease (locally/regionally/distantly) at radiological examinations, tissue and liquid biopsy, during non-operative management without salvage gastrectomy. The ongoing INFINITY proof-of-concept study may provide evidence on immunotherapy and the potential omission of surgery in localized/locally advanced GC/GEJC patients selected for dMMR/MSI-high status eligible for radical resection.

International audience; This work is focused on the modification of the interphase zone in short flax fibres / polypropylene (PP) composites by a bio-inspired modification of fibres called “nanostructuration” that uses the adsorption of biomass by-products, i.e. cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and xyloglucan (XG), to create hierarchical flax fibres. The wettability and interfacial adhesion study reveals a strong decrease in the polar character of CNC modified flax fibres, hence increasing the work of adhesion with PP. Moreover, combining XG/CNC modified interphases with MAPP coupling agent enhances the ultimate mechanical properties of biocomposites with higher tensile strength and work of rupture, and modifies failure mechanisms as revealed by in situ micro-mechanical tensile SEM experiments. Bio-based hierarchical composites inspired by naturally occurring nanostructures open a new path for the development of sustainable composites with enhanced structural properties.

International audience; Interest in eco-composites incorporating elements from recycling is growing to reduce the carbon footprint of final products. Therefore, the characterisation surface properties of recycled fibres is of first importance. However, in order to maximise the service properties and facilitate their development, chemical surface treatments can be made in order to improve fibres compatibility with resins. For a better understanding of the behaviour of these new reinforcements during Liquid Composite Moulding processes (LCM), surface analysis and wetting properties are studied. However, this type of analysis, using the Owens and Wendt relation and based on tensiometric methods, requires special procedures, specifically for estimation of the contact angle. Based on two tensiometric methods, carbon and basalt fibres with different sizing are characterised in first approach, in order to be able to address recycled materials in further studies. The main contribution of this study is to evaluate the error in surface energy and its components determination associated to the measurement of an alleged equilibrium contact angle deriving from static or quasi-static data.

International audience; Wood-plastic composites were prepared by impregnating softwood and tropical hardwood by a radiation-curing resin containing phosphorus or chlorine groups as flame retardant. Microscopic observations revealed that the heterogeneous impregnation depends on the density but also on the wood species and sample orientation. Physical properties (hardness, stiffness, conductivity, water content) of the unmodified woods and their resin-impregnated counterparts were examined and correlated with their densities. The flame retardancy was investigated by cone calorimeter tests. Although the incorporation of the resin is detrimental to the flame retardancy, the addition of phosphorus or chlorine groups allows a decrease in flammability. Phosphorus-containing resins limit the smoke release in comparison to chlorine-containing resin. Finally, the denser wood-plastic composites exhibit improved mechanical properties without increasing the flammability in comparison with their unmodified wood counterparts.

International audience; In this work, various flame retardants (FR) and clays were added to polyamide 12 (PA12). The process-ability by Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), thermal behaviour and flame retardancy of these compounds were evaluated. The observations show an important impact on powder flowability of some formulations containing melamine cyanurate and melamine polyphosphate leading to difficulties during SLS process. The incorporation of FRs also leads to changes in melting and crystallization temperatures of polyamide as a function of the FR type. Furthermore, in order to evaluate the influence of the process on thermal properties of samples, a comparison between thermocompression (TC) and SLS techniques was performed for the formulations containing the flame retardants alone. The addition of flame retardants impacts the porosity of the SLS samples as a function of the FR type. For the additives which are able to melt during SLS process, a lower porosity was observed. Samples made by TC containing 30 wt% of ammonium polyphosphate, zinc diethylphosphinate and a pentaerythritol ester of methane phosphonic acid showed a better thermal stability and flame retardancy compared to the ones made by SLS, probably due to the porosity of the SLS samples and some degradation of the flame retardant by the laser beam. For the formulation containing only zinc borate, no difference was observed between TC and SLS. In order to evaluate possibly synergistic effects between flame retardants, binary and ternary formulations were prepared by SLS. On the whole, these formulations led to an improvement of flame retardancy compared to neat PA12. Moreover, XRD results showed the formation of borophosphates for binary and ternary formulations , indicating interactions between flame retardants. EDX results showed that at least 95% of the phosphorus remained in the residue for the formulations containing zinc borate, thus corroborating the results obtained by XRD. The partial substitution of zinc borate by kaolinite led to a further improvement of flame retardancy at the expense of a porosity increase in the samples.

International audience; Capillary wicking of liquids in natural fibrous reinforcements is a significant phenomenon in fibre-reinforced composites manufacturing through Liquid Composite Moulding (LCM) processes. Such phenomenon is however difficult to analyse due to heterogeneous, multiscale and variable fibrous medium during flow. Taking into account the fibre swelling, a modified Washburn’s model is proposed to predict the capillary rise of liquids in flax fibres. Particularly, swelling and wicking are studied at two different scales, i.e. elementary fibres and individual yarns. Swelling effects have been considered in the model and a modified Washburn’s theory has been developed. The proposed model satisfactory fits experimental results from capillary wicking tests, and hold for a 60% fibre volume fraction (Vf) of fabric on a relatively short duration while it fits well on a longer duration for lower Vf.

International audience; This work consists in an experimental investigation of forced dynamic wetting of molten polymers on cellulosic substrates and an estimation of models describing this dynamic. A previous work of Pucci et al. (2018) showed that for totally wetting liquids (as paraffin oils), temperature-induced variations in dynamic wetting are included into the capillary number (Ca) and then a master curve of dynamic contact angle (θ d) as a function of Ca can be obtained. The hydrodynamic theory (HDT) correctly describes the dynamic wetting for Ca > 2 · 10 −3. For lower Ca, a change in the dynamic wetting behavior was observed. Here, partially wetting liquids (polyethylene glycols, a.k.a. PEGs) at different molecular weight (Mn) were used at temperatures above their melting point to investigate the dynamic wetting behavior on cellulosic substrates for a large range of Ca. It was found that the dynamic curves of θ d vs. Ca depend on Mn. Moreover, the HDT correctly describes the experimental measurements for Ca > 2 · 10 −3. Below this threshold the dynamic contact angle decreases toward the static one. A linear correlation between parameters obtained fitting the HDT and the molecular weight of polymer was found. The prediction of dynamic wetting for low Ca (Ca < 2 · 10 −3) with the molecular kinetic theory (MKT) was also evaluated and discussed.

International audience; La fabrication additive et plus particulièrement la fabrication par dépôt de fil fondu est une technologie qui prend de plus en plus d’ampleur dans les milieux industriels et grand public. En effet, cette technologie permet la fabrication de prototypes et de maquettes, mais aussi, de plus en plus, de pièces de petite série . L’utilisation croissante de ce procédé de fabrication nécessite l’usage de matériaux qui ont un impact plus faible sur l’environnement. C’est dans ce contexte que des biocomposites ignifugés sont étudiés afin de répondre aux normes de sécurité de l’utilisateur et aux réglementations environnementales. De ce fait, la réaction au feu des matériaux pour la fabrication additive est de plus en plus étudiée. Le poly(acide lactique) (PLA) est un polyester aliphatique biosourcé, compostable, biocompatible et non toxique. Cependant, la stabilité thermique et la réaction au feu du PLA ne sont pas satisfaisantes. Le système retardateur de flamme utilisé dans cette étude est principalement constitué d’ammonium polyphosphate (APP) et de lignine. L’APP est un retardateur de flamme couramment utilisé. La lignine est un sous-produit de l’industrie papetière. De plus, la lignine présente une bonne stabilité thermique et est un bon agent de charbonnement. L’utilisation combinée de l’APP et de la lignine a montré une amélioration des performances de l’APP seul grâce à la formation d’un système retardateur de flamme intumescent. Les biocomposites ignifugés mis en œuvre et testés présentent de meilleures réactions au feu. En effet, les composites à base de PLA présentent un meilleur comportement au feu que le PLA vierge (PLA0) avec une réduction jusqu’à moins 65% pour le pic de débit calorifique (Figure 1). Cependant, le ratio entre la lignine et l’APP montre un réel impact sur le comportement au feu de ces composites. Les formulations avec un ratio d’APP/lignine de 17/3 et 15/5 ont permis de réduire significativement la chaleur totale dégagée (moins 48%). Ces matériaux sont très intéressants pour la fabrication additive de par leurs réactions au feu améliorées, et de par leur caractère biosourcé.

Da essi si traggono dati sui traffici dei mercanti della Serenissima in quel luogo lontano, nonché informazioni sull'organizzazione amministrativa, l'assetto urbano e la compagine sociale dell'insediamento veneziano nella seconda parte del Trecento.

Background: Patients (pts) with cancer are purported to be more vulnerable to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, cancer encompasses a spectrum of heterogenous tumor subtypes. The aim of this study was to investigate severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection risk and COVID-19 prevalence according to tumor subtype in the resident cancer population of the Province of Parma (Emilia Romagna Region, Nothern Italy) during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Italy. Methods: We analyzed data from the Parma Province Cancer Registry, COVID-19 hospital medical records, and local surveillance system of all laboratory-confirmed cases tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 from the beginning of the outbreak (February, 20) to July 19, 2020. All the Parma resident cancer population was classified as either “active” or “inactive” according to the evidence of any referral to health services, for any reason, during the observation period. Study analyses were adjusted for patient demographics, tumor subtype and period of cancer diagnosis. Results: 40,148 cancer pts (mean age 68;57.8% females;45.1% active) were analyzed. The cumulative risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection was 11.2% for cancer pts vs. 7% for non-cancer subjects (P < 0.0001). The overall COVID-19 attack rate was 2.2% (95% CI, 2.0-2.4) and 2.6% (95% CI, 2.4-2.9) for inactive and active cancer pts, respectively. The cumulative incidence of COVID-19 was higher in active vs. inactive cancer subjects (HR 1.18, P = 0.01). In the active cancer group, the cumulative incidence of COVID-19 was higher in lung cancer pts vs. other tumors (HR 4.3). In the same group, HR for breast cancer pts was 0.86. Interestingly, the subgroup analysis of COVID-19 cumulative incidence showed a significant interaction between active patient status and hematological malignancies. Conclusions: In our study, cancer pts were more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The cumulative incidence of COVID-19 was higher in active vs. inactive cancer subjects. However, cancer is a heterogeneous group of diseases and pts with different tumor types had differing susceptibility to COVID-19 phenotypes. Background: Pulmonary metastasectomy is considered a standard procedure in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). Different prognostic factors including multiple metastatic nodules, the presence of extra-pulmonary metastases and BRAF mutation status have been associated with poor survival. The aim of this study was to evaluate which factors influenced survival in CRC patients undergoing pulmonary metastasectomy by studying primary tumors and pulmonary metastases. Methods: All patients treated for primary CRC who presented pulmonary metastases in a 10-year period were considered (group A). A control group treated for primary CRC who did not develop any pulmonary or extra-pulmonary metastases was taken for comparison (group B). Different prognostic factors including gender, age, tumor location, histological type, inflammatory infiltrate, BRAF, CDX2 and extra-pulmonary metastases were analyzed. Overall survival (OS) and patients’ survival after pulmonary metastasectomy were also considered. Results: Fifty-four patients were evaluated in group A and twenty-three in group B. In group A, BRAF immunohistochemistry did not significantly differ between primary tumors and pulmonary metastases; no difference of BRAF expression was found between group A and B. Even the expression of CDX2 was not significantly different in primary tumors and metastases. Similarly, in group B CDX2 did not significantly differ from primary CRC of group A. The most significant prognostic factor was the presence of extra-pulmonary metastases. Patients with extra-pulmonary metastases experienced a significant shorter survival compared to patients with pulmonary metastases alone (P=0.001 with log-rank test vs. P=0.003 with univariate Cox regression). Interestingly, patients with right pulmonary metastases presented a significant longer survival than those with left pulmonary metastases (P=0.027 with log-rank test vs. 0.04 with univariate Cox regression). Conclusions: The main prognostic factor associated with poor survival after lung resection of CRC metastases is a history of extra-pulmonary metastases. BRAF and CDX2 did not have a significant role in this small series of patients.

International audience; A comparison of the influence of sepiolite and lignin as potential synergists for fire retardant (FR) systems based on ammonium polyphosphate (APP) has been carried out in polyurethane elastomer and polylactide. Different ratios of kraft lignin and sepiolite were tested in combination with APP in both polymers. The thermal stability and the fire behavior of the corresponding composites were evaluated using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), a Pyrolysis Combustion Flow Calorimeter (PCFC) and Cone Calorimeter (CC). The mechanisms of flame retardancy imparted by APP and other components were investigated. Synergistic effects were highlighted but only for specific ratios between APP and sepiolite in polyurethane elastomer (PUE) and polylactide (PLA) on one hand, and between APP and lignin in PLA on the other hand. Sepiolite acts as char reinforcement but through the formation of new phosphorus compounds it is also able to form a protective layer. Conversely, only complementary effects on fire performance were noted for lignin in PUE due to a dramatic influence on thermal stability despite its action on char formation.

International audience; The aim of this study was to set an experimental protocol in order to identify key parameters in wetting dynamics during liquid composite manufacturing. To validate the procedure, model materials were studied : cellulose films as substrates,and paraffins and polyethylene glycols as liquids. The experimental procedure consisted of characterizing the substrates interms of morphology and surface chemistry, showing that, as a first approximation, it was possible to consider substrates as model surfaces without physico-chemical defects. The characterization of liquids as a function of temperature and molar mass was then performed, considering an additional issue : the molten state of polymers. Temperature conditions and molar mass were then considered in wetting and dewetting dynamic. The results were well described by the hydrodynamic approach for a range of capillary numbers. Using these models, physical parameters were estimated, explaining the influence of temperature and polymer chain lengths on wetting dynamics.; Ce travail a pour objectif de calibrer un protocole de mesure permettant d’identifier les paramètres clés dans les phénomènes de dynamique de mouillage lors de la mise en oeuvre de composites. Pour valider la procédure, des matériaux modèles ont été étudiés : des films cellulosiques en tant que substrats, et des paraffines et polyéthylène glycols comme liquides.La procédure expérimentale a consisté à caractériser le substrat en termes de morphologie et de chimie de surface, en montrant qu’en première approximation on peut s’affranchir des hétérogénéités de surface. La caractérisation de liquides en fonction de la température et en fonction de la masse molaire a été ensuite analysée en prenant en compte l’état fondu des polymères. Les conditions de température et de masse molaire ont été ensuite considérées en dynamique de mouillage et de mouillage. Les résultats ont bien été décrit par l’approche hydrodynamique pour un certain intervalle de valeur du nombre capillaire. Sur la base de ces modèles, des paramètres physiques ont été estimés, en précisant l’influence de la température et des longueurs de chaine de polymères sur la dynamique de mouillage.

International audience; The aim is to study the effect of the modification of the free surface energy of flax fibres by a thermal treatment on the mechanical behaviour of bio-based composites. It has been proved that this modification enhancesthe wettability of flax fibers by epoxy resin and resultsin a lower porosity amount in composites. Tests to evaluate mechanical properties of elementary fibres, yarns and composites have been performed. The main conclusion is that, even if elementary fibres and yarns have been embrittled and work of adhesion hasbeen lowered after thermal treatment, since the wettability of fibers has been improved, the mechanical behaviour of composites manufactured by LCM is better with treated fibers.; Le but de la présente étude est de prouver l’effet d’une modification d’énergie de surface de fibres de lin par traitement thermique sur le comportement mécanique de composites bio-sourcés. Il a été montré que ce traitement améliore le mouillage des fibres par de la résine époxy en réduisant le taux de porosité dans le composite. Des tests visant à évaluer les propriétés mécaniques des fibres élémentaires, des fils et du composite ont été menés. La conclusion est que, même si les fibres élémentaires et les fils ont été fragilisés et que le travail d’adhésion a diminué, comme le mouillage a été amélioré, le comportement mécanique des composites renforcés par des fibres traitées, élaborée par infusion, est meilleur.

Although good progress was made by two international benchmark exercises on in-plane permeability, existing methods have not yet been standardized. This paper presents the results of a third benchmark exercise using in-plane permeability measurement, based on systems applying the radial unsaturated injection method. 19 participants using 20 systems characterized a non-crimp and a woven fabric at three different fiber volume contents, using a commercially available silicone oil as impregnating fluid. They followed a detailed characterization procedure and also completed a questionnaire on their set-up and analysis methods. Excluding outliers (2 of 20), the average coefficient of variation (c v ) between the participant´s results was 32% and 44% (non-crimp and woven fabric), while the average c v for individual participants was 8% and 12%, respectively. This indicates statistically significant variations between the measurement systems. Cavity deformation was identified as a major influence, besides fluid pressure/viscosity measurement, textile variations, and data analysis. Fil: May, D.. L'approvvigionamento cerealicolo rappresenta un aspetto fondamentale della politica economica del governo bolognese nel XIII secolo. Il notevole aumento della popolazione inurbata, la fama e il successo dell'Università, il forte sviluppo delle attività artigianali e del mercato cittadino indussero il comune felsineo a organizzare un sistema di rifornimento del grano articolato e rigidamente controllato dagli ufficiali pubblici. La crisi frumentaria del 1259, inoltre, portò alla creazione di una magistratura, detta dei Domini bladi, incaricata di gestire l'emergenza. Tale magistratura si trasformò ben presto da straordinaria a ordinaria.

L'ospitalità è uno degli aspetti principali di Bologna grassa, dal Medioevo a oggi. Le taverne, le osterie e gli alberghi, essendo crocevia di persone, merci e idee, rappresentarono sin dal XIII secolo i luoghi ideali di elaborazione di una cucina internazionale rivolta alle élites urbane, che contribuì a creare il mito gastronomico della città felsinea. In questo senso, studiare il mondo dell'ospitalità nel Medioevo significa anche ricercare le motivazioni che hanno reso Bologna grassa così famosa attraverso i secoli.

International audience; Wetting properties and capillary parameters are of first interest for composite and especially biocomposite manufacturing, interface compatibility between reinforcement and matrix, and durability. Few studies have been dedicated in literature to continuous textile fibers and uncured liquid resins wetting properties, and particularly the methods used may be ambiguous, revealing a wide dispersion in results. In this work a reliable method is proposed to determine properly the wetting properties of fibers and some resins commonly used for composite applications. Firstly, a procedure to characterize dispersive and polar components of surface tension for an epoxy and a partially bio-based resin with a tensiometer is proposed. Then a new method was applied on single fibers of semi-synthetic cellulose (viscose), which allows deriving representative values of contact angles from a series of measurements, minimizing the measurement scatter even when using a conventional tensiometer. Resin components and contact angles between cellulose fibers and test liquids, including resins, led to characterize dispersive and polar components of fiber surface energy.

This study focused on the development of skin/core structures with flame-retarded poly (lactic acid) (PLA) compositions, by additive manufacturing. For this purpose, the technique of Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) was chosen. Plate samples were also manufactured by injection moulding for comparison purpose. The nature of the flame retardants (FR), their contents and their distribution in the samples were varied. The fire behaviour was investigated by cone calorimeter tests. The microstructure was characterized and related to the fire performances of each flame-retarded PLA structure. The results showed a significant decrease of the time to ignition (TTI) of 3D printed samples compared to the injected ones, due to their higher porosity. However, for a given total FR content, concentrating FR close to the radiated surface proved to be a promising solution in order to optimize fire performance while preserving the mechanical properties of neat PLA.

BACKGROUND Preclinical and clinical studies suggest synergistic activity between somatostatin analogues and mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors. The activity and safety of everolimus was assessed in combination with octreotide long-acting repeatable (LAR) in patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of gastroenteropancreatic and lung origin. METHODS This was a phase 2, multicenter trial using a Simon's 2-stage minimax design. Treatment-naive patients with advanced well-differentiated NETs of gastroenteropancreatic tract and lung origin received everolimus 10 mg daily, in combination with octreotide LAR 30 mg every 28 days. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR). RESULTS A total of 50 patients (median age, 60.5 years) were enrolled. Primary tumor sites were: pancreas (14 patients), lung (11 patients), ileum (9 patients), jejunum and duodenum (2 patients), and unknown (14 patients). Thirteen patients (26%) had carcinoid syndrome. Treatment-related adverse events (AEs) were mostly grade 1 or 2; the only grade 4 AE was mucositis in 1 patient, whereas grade 3 AEs included skin rash in 1 case (2%), stomatitis in 4 cases (8%), and diarrhea in 11 cases (22%). The ORR was 18%; 2% of patients had a complete response (CR), 16% a partial response (PR) and 74% achieved stable disease (SD). All CRs and all PRs as well as 92% of SDs had a duration ≥6 months. The clinical benefit (CR+PR+SD) was 92%. At a median follow-up of 277 days, median time to progression and overall survival were not reached. CONCLUSIONS The everolimus-octreotide LAR combination was active and well tolerated in these previously treated patients with advanced NETs, suggesting a possible role as first-line treatment in patients with NET. IMPORTANCE: Based on a small retrospective study, rechallenge with cetuximab-based therapy for patients with KRAS wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) who were previously treated with the same anti–epidermal growth factor receptor–based regimen might be efficacious. Recent data suggest the role of liquid biopsy as a tool to track molecular events in circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). OBJECTIVE: To prospectively assess the activity of cetuximab plus irinotecan as third-line treatment for patients with RAS and BRAF wild-type mCRC who were initially sensitive to and then resistant to first-line irinotecan- and cetuximab-based therapy. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Multicenter phase 2 single-arm trial conducted from January 7, 2015, to June 19, 2017. Liquid biopsies for analysis of ctDNA were collected at baseline. Main eligibility criteria included RAS and BRAF wild-type status on tissue samples; prior first-line irinotecan- and cetuximab-based regimen with at least partial response, progression-free survival of at least 6 months with first-line therapy, and progression within 4 weeks after last dose of cetuximab; and prior second-line oxaliplatin- and bevacizumab-based treatment. INTERVENTIONS: Biweekly cetuximab, 500 mg/m(2), plus irinotecan, 180 mg/m(2). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Overall response rate according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors, version 1.1. Secondary end points included progression-free survival and overall survival and, as an exploratory analysis, RAS mutations in ctDNA. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients (9 women and 19 men; median age, 69 years [range, 45-79 years]) were enrolled. Six partial responses (4 confirmed) and 9 disease stabilizations were reported (response rate, 21%; 95% CI, 10%-40%; disease control rate, 54%; 95% CI, 36%-70%). Primary end point was met because lower limit of 95% CI of response rate was higher than 5%. RAS mutations were found in ctDNA collected at rechallenge baseline in 12 of 25 evaluable patients (48%). No RAS mutations were detected in samples from patients who achieved confirmed partial response. Patients with RAS wild-type ctDNA had significantly longer progression-free survival than those with RAS mutated ctDNA (median progression-free survival, 4.0 vs 1.9 months; hazard ratio, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.18-0.98; P = .03). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This is the first prospective demonstration that a rechallenge strategy with cetuximab and irinotecan may be active in patients with RAS and BRAF wild-type mCRC with acquired resistance to first-line irinotecan- and cetuximab-based therapy. The evaluation of RAS mutational status on ctDNA might be helpful in selecting candidate patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02296203
