Clouds play a key role in the Earth’s radiation budget, weather, and hydrological cycle, as well as the radiative and thermodynamic components of the climate system. Spaceborne observations are an essential tool to detect clouds, study cloud–radiation interactions, and explore their microphysical properties. Recent advancements in spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions of satellite-borne measurements and the increasing variety of orbits and observing geometries offer the opportunity for more efficient and sophisticated retrieval procedures, leading to the more accurate estimation of cloud parameters. However, despite the availability of near-coincident observations of the same atmospheric state, the synergy between the whole set of acquired information is still largely underexplored. The use of synergy is often invoked to optimize the exploitation of the available information, but it is rarely implemented. Indeed, the strategy currently used in most cases is that retrievals are performed separately for each instrument and, only later, the retrieved products are combined. In this framework, therefore, there is a strong need to study and exploit the synergy potential of the instruments currently in orbit or that will be put in orbit in the next few years. This paper reviews the efforts already made in this direction, combining passive infrared and microwave to retrieve cloud microphysical properties. We provide readers with a framework to interpret the state of the art, highlighting the pros and cons of the various approaches currently used with a look to the most promising methodologies to be deployed to address the challenges of this field.

Mesoscale numerical weather prediction models are frequently utilized for wind speed analysis and forecasting in the planning and support of wind power generation. However, high computational costs only allow for routine use up to a kilometer scale, which is sometimes too coarse to support onshore wind power generation in areas with complex orography. To address this, an algorithm was developed in southern Italy to downscale the wind fields output using the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model for the first 250 m above ground level. The algorithm is based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) and uses the WRF model outputs on a 1.2 km regular grid, and the land surface height and orientation on a 240 m regular grid to downscale wind fields to a 240 m regular grid. To train the ANNs, a WRF simulation dataset in large eddy simulation (LES) mode was developed. Particular attention was paid to defining the ANN architectures and analyzing inputs to mitigate overfitting risk while maintaining manageable computation costs. The evaluation of outcomes conducted using independent test datasets from WRF-LES simulations reveals that the wind speed root-mean-square difference (RMSD) is 0.5 m/s over land and 0.2 m/s over the sea surface, respectively, at a spatial resolution of approximately 800 m. These figures are lower than the RMSD values of 1.6 m/s over land and 1.0 m/s over the sea surface, accompanied by a spatial resolution of 1.8 km, which were obtained through comparison with the spline interpolation method.

The accurate detection of clouds is an important first step in the processing of remotely sensed satellite data analyses and subsequent cloud model predictions. While initial cloud retrieval technology began with the exploitation of one or two bands of satellite imagery, it has accelerated rapidly in recent years as sensor and retrieval technology, creating a new era in space observation exploration. Additionally, the initial emphasis in satellite retrieval technology focused on cloud detection for cloud forecast models, but more recently, cloud screening in satellite-acquired data is playing an increasingly critical role in the investigation of cloud-free data for the retrieval of soil moisture, vegetation cover, ocean color concentration and sea surface temperatures, as well as the environmental monitoring of a host of products, e.g., atmospheric aerosol data, to study the Earth’s atmospheric and climatic systems. With about 60% of the Earth covered by clouds, on average, it is necessary to accurately detect clouds in remote sensing data to screen cloud contaminate data in remote sensing analyses. In this review, the evolution of cloud-detection methodologies is highlighted with advancement in sensor hardware technology and machine learning algorithmic advances. The review takes into consideration the meteorological sensors usually used for atmospheric parameters estimation (thermodynamic profiles, aerosols, cloud microphysical parameters). Moreover, a discussion is presented on methods for obtaining the cloud-truth data needed to determine the accuracy of these cloud-detection approaches.

A neural network (NN) approach is proposed to combine future infrared (IASI-NG) and microwave (MWS) observations to retrieve cloud liquid and ice water path. The methodology is applied to simulated IASI-NG and MWS observations in the period January–October 2019. IASI-NG and MWS observations are simulated globally at synoptic hours (00:00, 06:00, 12:00, 18:00 UTC) and on a regular spatial grid (0.125° × 0.125°) from ECMWF 5-generation reanalysis (ERA5). The state-of-the-art σ-IASI and RTTOV radiative transfer codes are used to simulate IASI-NG and MWS observations, respectively, from the earth's state vector given by ERA5. A principal component analysis of the simulated IASI-NG observations is performed. Accordingly, a NN is developed to retrieve cloud liquid and ice water path from a combination of 24 MWS channels and 30 IASI-NG PCs. Validation indicates that this combination results in liquid and ice water path retrievals with overall accuracy of 1.85 10−2 kg/m2 and 1.18 10−2 kg/m2, respectively, and 0.97 correlation with respect to reference values. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) for CLWP results in about 30% of the mean value (5.91 10−2 kg/m2) and 22% of the variability (1-sigma). Similarly, the RMSE for CIWP results in about 41% of the mean value (2.91 10−2 kg/m2) and 22% of the variability. Two more NN are developed, retrieving cloud liquid and ice water path from microwave observations only (24 MWS channels) and infrared observations only (30 IASI-NG PCs), demonstrating quantitatively the advantage of using the combination of infrared and microwave observations with respect to either one alone.

This study focuses on digital Computer Aided Restoration procedures to guide the complex physical restoration of an artwork, innovating and implementing traditional survey methods. As a case study some results are presented of a complex and articulated conservative restoration project on a sculpted and painted wing altar, preserved in the Regional Gallery of Sicily in Palazzo Abatellis, Palermo. The application of non-invasive and high information density 3D survey methodologies allowed to record and integrate into a unique digital platform (designed within the UnReal Engine) a wide quantity of heterogeneous data which document the work's state (diagnostic analyses, graphical annotation, historical information). The multidisciplinary investigation process is aimed to guide the disassembly of the various components, to tell the long process of activity in the laboratory and to experiment the realization and integration of missing parts. The innovative application of 3D digital technologies shows how the integrated use of the new technology can be a useful tool for improving the conservation of a work of art. This work presents an algorithm based on a neural network (NN) for cloud detection to detect clouds and their thermodynamic phase using spectral observations from spaceborne microwave radiometers. A standalone cloud detection algorithm over the ocean and land has been developed to distinguish clear sky versus ice and liquid clouds from microwave sounder (MWS) observations. The MWS instrument—scheduled to be onboard the first satellite of the Eumetsat Polar System Second-Generation (EPS-SG) series, MetOp-SG A1—has a direct inheritance from advanced microwave sounding unit A (AMSU-A) and the microwave humidity sounder (MHS) microwave instruments. Real observations from the MWS sensor are not currently available as its launch is foreseen in 2024. Thus, a simulated dataset of atmospheric states and associated MWS synthetic observations have been produced through radiative transfer calculations with ERA5 real atmospheric profiles and surface conditions. The developed algorithm has been validated using spectral observations from the AMSU-A and MHS sounders. While ERA5 atmospheric profiles serve as references for the model development and its validation, observations from AVHRR cloud mask products provide references for the AMSU-A/MHS model evaluation. The results clearly show the NN algorithm’s high skills to detect clear, ice and liquid cloud conditions against a benchmark. In terms of overall accuracy, the NN model features 92% (88%) on the ocean and 87% (85%) on land, for the MWS (AMSU-A/MHS)-simulated dataset, respectively.

The study focuses on the definition of a geometric methodology for the use of catoptric anamorphosis in contemporary architecture. The particular projective phenomenon is illustrated, showing typological-geometric properties, responding to mechanisms of light reflection. It is pointed out that previous experience, over the centuries, employed the technique, relegating its realisation exclusively to reflecting devices realised by simple geometries, on a small scale and almost exclusively for convex mirrors. Wanting to extend the use of the projective phenomenon and experiment with the expressive potential on reflective surfaces of a complex geometric free-form nature, traditional geometric methods limit the design and prior control of the results, thus causing the desired effect to fail. Therefore, a generalisable methodological process of implementation is proposed, defined through the use of algorithmic-parametric procedures, for the determination of deformed images, describing possible subsequent developments.

The calibration of a reliable phenological model for olive grown in areas characterized by great environmental heterogeneity, like Italy, where many varieties exist, is challenging and often suffers from a lack of observations, especially on budbreak. In this study, we used a database encompassing many phenological events from different olive varieties, years, and sites scattered all over Italy to identify the phases in which site-enlarged developmental rates can be well regressed against air temperature (Developmental Rate function, DR) by testing both linear and nonlinear functions. A K-fold cross-validation (KfCV) was carried out to evaluate the ability of DR functions to predict phenological development. The cross-validation showed that the phases ranging from budbreak (BBCH 01 and 07) to flowering (BBCH 61 and 65) and from the beginning of flowering (BBCH 51) to flowering can be simulated with high accuracy (r2 = 0.93–0.96; RMSE = 3.9–6.6 days) with no appreciable difference among linear and nonlinear functions. Thus, the resulting DRs represent a simple yet reliable tool for regional phenological simulations for these phases in Italy, paving the way for a reverse modeling approach aimed at reconstructing the budbreak dates. By contrast, and despite a large number of phases explored, no appreciable results were obtained on other phases, suggesting possible interplays of different drivers that need to be further investigated.

The occurrence of fog often causes errors in the prediction of the incident solar radiation and the power produced by photovoltaic cells. An accurate fog forecast would benefit solar energy producers and grid operators, who could take coordinated actions to reduce the impact of discontinuity, the main drawback of renewable energy sources. Considering that information on discontinuity is crucial to optimize power production estimation and plant management efficiency, in this work, a fog forecast method based on the output of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) numerical model is presented. The areal extension and temporal duration of a fog event are not easy to predict. In fact, there are many physical processes and boundary conditions that cause fog development, such as the synoptic situation, air stability, wind speed, season, aerosol load, orographic influence, humidity and temperature. These make fog formation a complex and rather localized event. Thus, the results of a fog forecast method based on the output variables of the high spatial resolution WRF model strongly depend on the specific site under investigation. In this work, the thresholds are site-specifically designed so that the implemented method can be generalized to other sites after a preliminary meteorological and climatological study. The proposed method is able to predict fog in the 6–30 h interval after the model run start time; it has been evaluated against METeorological Aerodrome Report data relative to seven selected sites, obtaining an average accuracy of 0.96, probability of detection of 0.83, probability of false detection equal to 0.03 and probability of false alarm of 0.18. The output of the proposed fog forecast method can activate (or not) a specific fog postprocessing layer designed to correct the global horizontal irradiance forecasted by the WRF model in order to optimize the forecast of the irradiance reaching the photovoltaic panels surface.

In this study, we investigate the ability of several convective initiation predictors based on satellite infrared observations to distinguish convective weak precipitation events from those leading to intense rainfall. The two types of precipitation are identified according to hourly rainfall, respectively less than 10 mm and greater than 30 mm. The analysis is conducted on a representative dataset containing 92 severe and weak precipitation events collected over the Italian peninsula in the period 2016–2019 over June-September. The events are selected to be short-lived (i.e., less than 12 h) and localized (i.e., less than 50×50km2). Italian National Radar Network products, namely the Vertical Maximum Intensity (VMI) and the Surface Rain Total (SRT) variables (from Dewetra Platform by CIMA, Italian Civil Protection Department), are used as indicators of convection (i.e., VMI greater than 35 dBZ echo intensity) and cumulated rainfall, respectively. The considered predictors are linear combinations of spectral infrared channels measured with the Rapid Scan Service (RSS) Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) aboard Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) geostationary satellites. We select a 5×5 SEVIRI pixel-box centered on the storm core and perform a statistical analysis of the predictors up to 2.5 h around the event occurrence. We demonstrate that some of the proxies—describing growth and glaciation storm properties—show few degrees contrast between severe and nonsevere precipitation cases, hence carrying significant information to help discriminate the two types. We design a threshold scheme based on the three most informative predictors to distinguish weak and strong precipitation events. This analysis yields accuracy higher than 0.6 and the probability of false detection lower than 0.26; in terms of reducing false alarms, this method shows slight better performances compared to related works, at the expense of a lower probability of detection. The overall results, however, show limited capability for these infrared proxies as stand-alone predictors to distinguish severe from nonsevere precipitation events. Nonetheless, these may serve as additional tools to reduce the false alarm ratio in nowcasting algorithms for convective orographic storms. This study also provides further insight into the correlation between early infrared fields signatures prior to convection and subsequent evolution of the storms, extending previous works in this field.

The material that lies beneath the smooth shining surface of the stuccoes of the Serpotta family who used to work in Sicily from 1670 to 1730, has been thoroughly studied in previous papers, disclosing the deep, albeit empirical, knowledge of materials science that guided the artists in creating their masterpieces. In this work, attention is focused on the solid perspective and on the scenographic sculpture by Giacomo Serpotta, who is acknowledged as the leading exponent of the School. The study deals with some particular works of the artist, the “small-scaled plastic theatres”, so-called “teatrini”, which he made for the San Lorenzo Oratory in Palermo. On the basis of archival documents and previous analogical photogrammetric plotting, integrated with digital solutions and computer-based technologies, the study investigates and interprets the geometric-formal genesis of the examined works of art. Knowledge of the material composition of the stuccoes, along with the ability to accurately reproduce their shapes, give interesting possibilities to provide a complete reading of the works of art damaged by deterioration or theft.

Solar power generation is highly fluctuating due to its dependence on atmospheric conditions. The integration of this variable resource into the energy supply system requires reliable predictions of the expected power production as a basis for management and operation strategies. This is one of the goals of the Solar Cloud project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development (MISE)—to provide detailed forecasts of solar irradiance variables to operators and organizations operating in the solar energy industry. The Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis of the National Research Council (IMAA-CNR), participating to the project, implemented an operational chain that provides forecasts of all the solar irradiance variables at high temporal and horizontal resolution using the numerical weather prediction Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF-ARW) Solar version 3.8.1 released by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in August 2016. With the aim of improving the forecast of solar irradiance, the three-dimensional (3D-Var) data assimilation was tested to assimilate radiances from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) aboard the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) geostationary satellite into WRF Solar. To quantify the impact, the model output is compared against observational data. Hourly Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) is compared with ground-based observations from Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment (ARPA) and with MSG Shortwave Solar Irradiance estimations, while WRF Solar cloud coverage is compared with Cloud Mask by MSG. A preliminary test has been performed in clear sky conditions to assess the capability of the model to reproduce the diurnal cycle of the solar irradiance. The statistical scores for clear sky conditions show a positive performance of the model with values comparable to the instrument uncertainty and a correlation of 0.995. For cloudy sky, the solar irradiance and the cloud cover are better simulated when the SEVIRI radiances are assimilated, especially in the short range of the simulation. For the cloud cover, the Mean Bias Error one hour after the assimilation time is reduced from 41.62 to 20.29 W/m2 when the assimilation is activated. Although only two case studies are considered here, the results indicate that the assimilation of SEVIRI radiance improves the performance of WRF Solar especially in the first 3 hour forecast.

Le tecniche di computer vision oggi danno la possibilità di costruire in maniera rapida e automatica modelli 3D dettagliati a partire da dataset fotografici. La comunità accademica ha visto una crescente attenzione alla ricostruzione 3D a scala urbana. Tra i vari strumenti oggi a disposizione spicca VisualSfM sviluppato dall’università di Washingthon e Google. Si tratta di una Interfaccia grafica open source strutturata in algoritmi dedicati alla tecnica di Structure from Motion (SfM). VisualSfM utilizza un estrattore di features chiamato SIFTGPU e un algoritmo di Bundle Adjustment Multicore. Inoltre è possibile ottenere una nuvola di punti densa utilizzando gli algoritmi CMVS/PMVS2. La finalità di questo studio è di verificare l’accuratezza metrica delle ricostruzioni attraverso l’utilizzo integrato di VisualSfM e CMVS/PMVS2. L’approccio quindi è stato testato su diversi dataset di una certa entità strutturati da collezioni fotografiche ragionate.

Thanks to its observational frequency of 15 min, the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) geostationary satellite offers a great potential to monitor dust storms. To explore this potential, an algorithm for the detection and the retrieval of dust aerosol optical properties has been tested. This is a multispectral algorithm based on visible and infrared data which has been applied to 15 case studies selected between 2007 and 2011. The algorithm has been validated in the latitude–longitude box between 30 and 50 degrees north, and −10 and 20 degrees east, respectively. Hereafter we present the obtained results that have been validated against Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) ground-based measurements and compared with the retrievals from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites. The dust aerosol optical depth variations observed at the AERONET sites are well reproduced, showing good correlation of about 0.77, and a root mean square difference within 0.08, and the spatial patterns retrieved by using the algorithm developed are in agreement with those observed by MODIS.

In the particular field of the protection, conservation and valorization of Cultural Heritage, there are many scientific and technological advances implemented through financed projects between research institutions, universities and specializing companies in this area. On an operational level, to make this renewal effective, it is necessary to promote the formation of interdisciplinary teams of different professional skills, and to carry out tests and define methodologies and protocols. This study investigates these themes, focusing on the historic building “Grand Hotel Utveggio Castle”, which, by virtue of its chosen location and intended use, is exceptional for its technical and construction aspects and presents distinctive characteristics of place identity deeply connected with the city of Palermo. The project of knowledge and conservation aimed at acquiring and gaining experimental data, is directed at finding intervention methods for philological recovery, respecting the existing materials, preserving the dimensions of the structural parts and identifying the physical-mechanical compatibility between the historical materials and those of new generation.

Nel progetto della fabbrica del teatro diurno Politeama di Palermo, l’Architetto Almeyda sintetizza, in un equilibrio espressivo esemplare, la componente tecnologica e la forma geometrico-spaziale, fornendo soluzioni ottimali ai problemi costruttivi e funzionali. L’opera, per impostazione tipologico-compositiva, per aspetti specificatamente tecnologici e per dimensione e stile, offre spunti interessanti di riflessione sulle scelte tecniche operate per la realizzazione. Sulla base di alcuni disegni originali dell’Almeyda si approfondisce il sistema geometrico-compositivo di copertura. L’ardita e complessa costruzione in ferro e vetro, moderna e progressista nella forma, si manifesta come una tenda metallica, costituendo la struttura portante della copertura. Si forniscono utili chiavi di lettura e di interpretazione sulla genesi spaziale dell’elegante ed originale impianto costruttivo.

The purpose of this work is to explore the effect of temporal sampling on the accuracy of the hourly mean Surface Solar Irradiance (SSI) estimation. An upgraded version of the Advanced Model for the Estimation of Surface Solar Irradiance from Satellite (AMESIS), exploiting data from the Meteosat Second Generation Rapid Scanning Service (MSG-RSS), has been used to evaluate the SSI. The assessment of the new version of AMESIS has been carried out against data from two pyranometers located in Southern (Tito) and Northern (Ispra) Italy at an altitude of 760 m and 220 m, respectively. The statistical analysis of the comparison between hourly mean SSI estimates based on temporal sampling every five minutes shows a quantitative improvement compared to those based on 15-minute sampling. In particular, for the whole dataset in Tito, the correlation increases from 0.979 to 0.998, the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) decreases from 45.16 W/m2 to 13.19 W/m2 and the Mean Bias Error (MBE) is reduced from −0.67 W/m2 to −0.02 W/m2. For the whole dataset in Ispra, the correlation increases from 0.995 to 0.998, the RMSE decreases from 24.85 W/m2 to 15.59 W/m2, whereas the MBE increases from 3.84 W/m2 to 4.58 W/m2. This preliminary assessment shows that higher temporal sampling can improve SSI monitoring over areas featuring frequent and rapid solar irradiance variation.

This paper presents a geostatistical downscaling procedure to improve the spatial resolution of precipitation data. The kriging method with external drift has been applied to surface rain intensity (SRI) data obtained through the Operative Precipitation Estimation at Microwave Frequencies (OPEMW), which is an algorithm for rain rate retrieval based on Advanced Microwave Sounding Units (AMSU) and Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS) observations. SRI data have been downscaled from coarse initial resolution of AMSU-B/MHS radiometers to the fine resolution of Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) flying on board the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite. Orographic variables, such as slope, aspect and elevation, are used as auxiliary data in kriging with external drift, together with observations from Meteosat Second Generation-Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (MSG-SEVIRI) in the water vapor band (6.2 µm and 7.3 µm) and in thermal-infrared (10.8 µm and 8.7 µm). The validation is performed against measurements from a network of ground-based rain gauges in Southern Italy. It is shown that the approach provides higher accuracy with respect to ordinary kriging, given a choice of auxiliary variables that depends on precipitation type, here classified as convective or stratiform. Mean values of correlation (0.52), bias (0.91 mm/h) and root mean square error (2.38 mm/h) demonstrate an improvement by +13%, −37%, and −8%, respectively, for estimates derived by kriging with external drift with respect to the ordinary kriging.

This study investigates the value of satellite-based observational algorithms in supporting numerical weather prediction (NWP) for improving the alert and monitoring of extreme rainfall events. To this aim, the analysis of the very intense precipitation that affected the city of Livorno on 9 and 10 September 2017 is performed by applying three remote sensing techniques based on satellite observations at infrared/visible and microwave frequencies and by using maps of accumulated rainfall from the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model. The satellite-based observational algorithms are the precipitation evolving technique (PET), the rain class evaluation from infrared and visible observations (RainCEIV) technique and the cloud classification mask coupling of statistical and physics methods (C-MACSP). Moreover, the rain rates estimated by the Italian Weather Radar Network are also considered to get a quantitative evaluation of RainCEIV and PET performance. The statistical assessment shows good skills for both the algorithms (for PET: bias = 1.03, POD = 0.76, FAR = 0.26; for RainCEIV: bias = 1.33, POD = 0.77, FAR = 0.41). In addition, a qualitative comparison among the three technique outputs, rain rate radar maps, and WRF accumulated rainfall maps is also carried out in order to highlight the advantages of the different techniques in providing real-time monitoring, as well as quantitative characterization of rainy areas, especially when rain rate measurements from Weather Radar Network and/or from rain gauges are not available.

A new algorithm for the estimation of atmospheric temperature (T) and water vapor (WV) vertical profiles in nonprecipitating conditions is presented. The microwave random forest temperature and water vapor (MiRTaW) profiling algorithm is based on the random forest (RF) technique and it uses microwave (MW) sounding from the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellite. Three different data sources were chosen for both training and validation purposes, namely, the ERA-Interim from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer Atmospheric Temperature Water Vapour and Surface Skin Temperature (IASI L2 v6) from the Meteorological Operational satellites of the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), and the radiosonde observations from the Integrated Global Radiosonde Archive (IGRA). The period from 2012 to 2016 was considered in the training dataset; particular attention was paid to the instance selection procedure, in order to reduce the full training dataset with negligible information loss. The out-of-bag (OOB) error was computed and used to select the optimal RF parameters. Different RFs were trained, one for each vertical level: 32 levels for T (within 10–1000 hPa) and 23 levels for WV (200–1000 hPa). The validation of the MiRTaW profiling algorithm was conducted on a dataset from 2017. The mean bias error (MBE) of T vertical profiles ranges within about (−0.4–0.4) K, while for the WV mixing ratio, the MBE starts at ~0.5 g/kg near the surface and decreases to ~0 g/kg at 200 hPa level, in line with the expectations.

The Advanced Model for the Estimation of Surface Solar Irradiance (AMESIS) was developed at the Institute of Methodologies for Environmental Analysis of the National Research Council of Italy (IMAA-CNR) to derive surface solar irradiance from SEVIRI radiometer on board the MSG geostationary satellite. The operational version of AMESIS has been running continuously at IMAA-CNR over all of Italy since 2017 in support to the monitoring of photovoltaic plants. The AMESIS operative model provides two different estimations of the surface solar irradiance: one is obtained considering only the low-resolution channels (SSI_VIS), while the other also takes into account the high-resolution HRV channel (SSI_HRV). This paper shows the difference between these two products against simultaneous ground-based observations from a network of 63 pyranometers for different sky conditions (clear, overcast and partially cloudy). Comparable statistical scores have been obtained for both AMESIS products in clear and cloud situation. In terms of bias and correlation coefficient over partially cloudy sky, better performances are found for SSI_HRV (0.34 W/m2 and 0.995, respectively) than SSI_VIS (−33.69 W/m2 and 0.862) at the expense of the greater run-time necessary to process HRV data channel.

In this study, we compare different nowcasting techniques based upon the calculation of motion vector fields derived from spectral channels of Meteosat Second Generation—Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (MSG-SEVIRI). The outputs of the nowcasting techniques are used as inputs to the Advanced Model for Estimation of Surface solar Irradiance from Satellite (AMESIS), for predicting surface solar irradiance up to 2 h in advance. In particular, the first part of the methodology consists in projecting the time evolution of each MSG-SEVIRI channel (for every pixel in the spatial domain) through extrapolation of a displacement vector field obtained by matching similar patterns within two successive MSG-SEVIRI data images. Different ways to implement the above method result in substantial differences in the predicted trajectory, leading to different performances depending on the time interval of interest. All the nowcasting techniques considered here systematically outperform the simple persistence method for all MSG-SEVIRI channels and for each case study used in this work; importantly, this occurs across the entire 2 h period of the forecast. In the second part of the algorithm, the predicted irradiance maps computed with AMESIS from the forecasted radiances, are shown to be in good agreement with irradiances derived from MSG measured radiances and improve on numerical weather model predictions, thus providing a feasible alternative for nowcasting surface solar radiation. The results show that the mean values for correlation, bias, and root mean square error vary across the time interval, ranging between 0.94, −1 W/m 2 , 61 W/m 2 after 15 min, and 0.73, −18 W/m 2 , 147 W/m 2 after 2 h, respectively.

In this study, the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG)—Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) High Resolution Visible channel (HRV) is used in synergy with the narrow band MSG-SEVIRI channels for daytime fog detection. A new algorithm, named MSG-SEVIRI SatFog, has been designed and implemented. MSG-SEVIRI SatFog provides the indication of the presence of fog in near real time and at the high spatial resolution of the HRV channel. The HRV resolution is useful for detecting small scale daytime fog that would be missed in the MSG-SEVIRI low spatial resolution channels. By combining textural, physical and tonal tests, a distinction between fog and low stratus is performed for pixels identified as low/middle clouds or clear by the Classification-MAsk Coupling of Statistical and Physical Methods (C-MACSP) cloud detection algorithm. Suitable thresholds have been determined using a specific dataset covering different geographical areas, seasons and time of the day. MSG-SEVIRI SatFog is evaluated against METeorological Aerodrome Reports (METAR) data observations. Evaluation results in an accuracy of 69.9%, a probability of detection of 68.7%, a false alarm ratio of 31.3% and a probability of false detection of 30.0%.

Detection of clouds over polar areas from satellite radiometric measurements in the visible and IR atmospheric window region is rather difficult because of the high albedo of snow, possible ice covered surfaces, very low humidity, and the usual presence of atmospheric temperature inversion. Cold and highly reflective polar surfaces provide little thermal and visible contrast between clouds and the background surface. Moreover, due to the presence of temperature inversion, clouds are not always identifiable as being colder than the background. In addition, low humidity often causes polar clouds to be optically thin. Finally, polar clouds are usually composed of a mixture of ice and water, which leads to an unclear spectral signature. Single and bi-spectral threshold methods are sometimes inappropriate due to a large variability of surface emissivity and cloud conditions. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the crucial role played by surface emissivity in the detection of polar winter clouds and the potential improvement offered by infrared hyperspectral observations, such as from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI). In this paper a new approach for cloud detection is proposed and validated exploiting active measurements from satellite sensors, i.e., the CloudSat cloud profiling radar (CPR) and the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) on board the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO). For a homogenous IASI field of view (FOVs), the proposed cloud detection scheme tallies with the combined CPR and CALIOP product in classifying 98.11% of the FOVs as cloudy and also classifies 97.54% of the FOVs as clear. The Hansen Kuipers discriminant reaches 0.95.
