Abstract A promising alternative to comprehensively performing genomics experiments is to, instead, perform a subset of experiments and use computational methods to impute the remainder. However, identifying the best imputation methods and what measures meaningfully evaluate performance are open questions. We address these questions by comprehensively analyzing 23 methods from the ENCODE Imputation Challenge. We find that imputation evaluations are challenging and confounded by distributional shifts from differences in data collection and processing over time, the amount of available data, and redundancy among performance measures. Our analyses suggest simple steps for overcoming these issues and promising directions for more robust research.

Many experimental surveys allow to know driver’s behaviour. This latter is conditioned both by the psychophysical state and by the road environment. Several studies have been conducted on the interaction between drivers and the environment, as well as other studies have examined some psychological aspects of the driver behaviour. The road vehicles have been improved over time and the manufacturers have adapted the car structural safety features to the current needs of people’s safety. Some accidents are caused by blind spots due to vertical structural elements of the passenger compartment. This work tries to highlight how these elements are an obstacle to the conditions of frontal visibility from the driving seat, and how are an implicit problem for the safety. It was decided to investigate the possibilities of free vision for a sample of about 500 cars produced between the year 2007 and year 2016 and marketed in Italy. The cars analysed were divided into displacement classes and for each class the clear and blind viewing angles from the driving seat were determined: in the direction of travel, to right and to left. The displacement classes of the cars investigated were weighted based on the real presence in the Italian vehicle fleet. Over time there have been a decrease in the free angle on the driver’s left and an increase in the free angle to the driver’s right due to changes in the pillars and the size of the windscreen. The results were used to check some typical driving situations about at-grade intersections, to verify the actual safety conditions and to show which type of rule is more suitable for the different intersection angle of the roads.

The Jetmore Chalk Member of the Greenhorn Limestone is a Late Cretaceous rock unit deposited under the Western Interior Seaway in North America. We here report an assemblage of vertebrate fossils collected through surface collecting and bulk sampling at a new Jetmore Chalk locality in Republic County, Kansas, U.S.A. Taxonomically, it consists of diverse carnivorous fish taxa (e.g., Ptychodus, Cretoxyrhina, Squalicorax, Pachyrhizodus, and Plethodidae), indicating that the marine paleoecology during the deposition of the Jetmore Chalk was quite complex. The fossil assemblage also includes the first record of the aquatic lizard, Coniasaurus cf. C. crassidens, from the Jetmore Chalk, as well as the first record of a ‘billfish’-type bony fish, Cylindracanthus sp., from Kansas that also represents the oldest fossil record for the genus. Whereas the overall taxonomic composition of known fossil vertebrates from the Jetmore Chalk is consistent with typical Cenomanian-Santonian vertebrate assemblages of the Western Interior Seaway, this study demonstrates the presence of local differences in the relative abundance of fossils across different fish taxa between a known Jetmore Chalk locality and the new Jetmore Chalk locality described in this study.

Tick borne encephalitis virus infection usually shows a biphasic course. In the first stage of illness symptoms are similar to a flu-like syndrome, then after a defervescence period, fever may represent with neurological manifestations ranging from mild meningitis to severe encephalomyelitis. We report the clinical case of an adult man presented with an acute proximal hyposthenia, severe hyperckemia, clinical and laboratoristic evidence of acute tick borne virus infection. This virus has a favourite tropism for the anterior horn cells of the cervical spine segment. Polio-like syndrome, usually affecting the upper limbs, is the clinical phenotype of an infection of the cervical motoneurons. Usually myelitis is associated to severe encephalitis and a complete diagnosis may be difficult in comatose patients. Rarely, an isolated polio-like syndrome may be the sole neurological complication of tick-borne encephalitis.

Between 1993 and 1998, we isolated Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato from 55 of the 119 patients with clinically diagnosed Lyme borreliosis who were admitted to “San Martino” Hospital in Belluno, Veneto, an Adriatic region in northeastern Italy where Lyme borreliosis is endemic. Upon hospitalization, all patients presented erythema migrans. Isolates were typed using ribosomal DNA PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the rrfA-rrlB intergenic spacer. Of the 41 isolates typed, 37 belonged to Borrelia afzelii , 2 to Borrelia garinii , and 2 to B. burgdorferi sensu stricto. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, performed on 21 strains (13 new isolates and 8 controls), revealed different RFLP patterns within the B. garinii and B. afzelii strains; among the five B. garinii strains and the 12 B. afzelii strains, three or two different RFLP patterns were identified, according to the restriction enzyme used. The protein patterns of the new isolates confirmed their genotypic classification and revealed the level of expression of some immunodominant proteins like OspA and other characteristic Osps. These findings constitute the first report of such a high recovery rate of B. burgdorferi from patients in a very restricted area in Italy; they also indicate the predominance of the genospecies B. afzelii in the study area and the heterogeneity of the circulating strains.

Using a high-temperature Calvet microcalorimeter, we have studied the chemisorption process of methanol on α-Al 2 O 3 at 200, 250 and 300°C. From the measurement of calorimetric isotherms, volumetric isotherms and chemisorption differential heats, we have demonstrated the existence of Al sites of different strengths in α-Al 2 O 3 . At very low coverage of methanol, such active sites ( q diff ⪢ 200 kJ mol −1 , Lewis sites) are very strong and methanol is irreversibly adsorbed as methoxy groups by means of a dissociative mechanism, while at medium coverage, the sites are less strong ( q diff −1 ) and methanol is reversibly adsorbed by means of a coordinative mechanism.

In May 1999, a cluster of cases of African tick-bite fever was detected in six Italian tourists who had returned from South Africa. All of the patients had moderate fever and cutaneous eschars. Regional lymphangitis was observed in three of the patients and skin rash in two. By comparing the number of eschars with the number of detectable bite sites it was suggested that at least two-thirds of the biting vectors were capable of transmitting Rickettsia africae. The clinical course of disease was mild in all cases, and all but one of the patients recovered spontaneously before antibiotic treatment was initiated. The diagnosis of African tick-bite fever was confirmed serologically using both microimmunofluorescence and Western blot tests.
