The Weintraubs Syncopators, international musical celebrities of the 1930s, embarked on a four-year journey across Europe, Russia and the Far East in exile from the antisemitic ideologies of the German Third Reich. This band of mainly Jewish musicians arrived in Sydney, Australia, in 1937. The decision of some of them to stay brought them into conflict with the aggressively protectionist Musicians’ Union of Australia. They gained employment at a high-end Sydney nightclub but when war came, were forced to come to terms with a change in their status – from celebrities to enemy aliens. Denounced for alleged espionage activities in Russia, three were interned and the band broke up. In this major recounting of the experience of the Weintraubs Syncopators, Kay Dreyfus pieces together the complex personal, social and political forces at work in this story of migration at a time of insecurity, fear and dramatic conflict.

Background The transition to parenthood can be a challenging time, in which both mothers and fathers experience increased risk of distress and depression. Mothers are more likely than fathers to engage with services and have their mental health monitored and attended to during the perinatal period. The present study aimed to explore whether smartphone technology could be used to address fathers’ needs across their transition to fatherhood. Methods A corpus of messages, including linked information and mood tracking software, was designed to support and enhance paternal relationships with their babies, their partners and themselves across the perinatal period. Messages were sent to project participants (N = 520) from 12-weeks’ gestation to 24-weeks after birth. Results Of those fathers enrolled (N = 520), 21.5% scored >13 on K6 and completion rate (85%) was similar between these and other fathers. Most fathers (63.1%) clicked at least one link and responses were received for 20.5% of mood tracker questions. The probability of reporting worse mood scores decreased over time. Fathers completing post study surveys (N = 101) reported that messages helped them in their experience of becoming a new dad (92.8%), as well as helping them develop a strong relationship with their new child (54.9%), and in their relationship with their partner (79%). Conclusions The present study has demonstrated that it is both feasible and acceptable to support new fathers with SMS4dads, a relationship-focused messaging system designed to be delivered to smartphones across fathers’ transition to parenthood.

This thesis explores the early Australian experience of the Weintraub Syncopators, a group of Jewish musicians from Berlin remembered as the on-stage band in Josef von Sternberg’s classic 1930 film The Blue Angel. The Weintraubs arrived in Australia as contracted celebrity entertainers in July 1937, and eventually secured well-paid, high-profile employment at a fashionable Sydney night-club. The outbreak of war created a rupture in the group’s story; the band ceased to exist under that name when three of the musicians were interned on 6 June 1940. Reflecting that rupture, my thesis falls into two thematic sections. The first explores the musicians’ encounter, as immigrant professionals, with the Musicians’ Union of Australia, an organisation which, for four decades of the early twentieth century, sought to exclude all foreign musicians from membership and hence from work in the mainstream profession. I argue that, in order to understand the Union’s attitude towards Jewish (and refugee) musicians in the 1930s, including the Weintraubs, it is necessary to trace the evolution and decline of Union policy on foreign musicians between c. 1918 and c. 1960, and to place this policy in its social, industrial and legislative context. The second thematic section explores the impact and consequences of civilian denunciations of so-called ‘enemy aliens’, including the Weintraubs and other Jewish refugee immigrants, and its link to internment in wartime Australia. In this section, I also examine the ideologies of citizenship and allegiance that governed official assessment of the relative credibility of denouncer and denounced. Common to both themes is the question of how much it mattered that the musicians were Jewish. I conclude that a failure to distinguish between Jewish refugees and other foreigners, or other German-speaking nationals, rather than overt antisemitism, characterised the approaches of (respectively) the Union and security services. Research is primarily based on named files held in the National Archives of Australia and the extensive records of the Musicians’ Union of Australia held in the Noel Butlin Archive Centre, Australian National University.

Patients in rural and remote Australia have less access to specialist oncology services and rely more on local health professionals for provision of cancer care. We have developed a 7.5-h online educational program on palliative oncology for health professionals focused on the needs of rural providers. There were 501 active (enrolled) users and 268 ad hoc (non-enrolled) users, with 90 completing evaluation. Eighty-two (91%) indicated that their learning needs were partially or entirely met. Sixty-five (75%) respondents planned to review or change their practice as a result. The online program is effective in meeting learning needs of Australian health providers, reaching high numbers with high acceptability. Refereed/Peer-reviewed
