2. Perceptions and Readiness of High School Mathematics Teachers for Integration of ICT Tools in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics

Abstract: This paper seeks to gain insights into teachers' perceptions, and readiness to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) tools in mathematics instruction. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving surveys and interviews with a sample of high school mathematics teachers. The study involved 90 mathematics teachers working in three senior high schools in Kumasi metropolis in Ghana. The study revealed that teachers generally hold positive perceptions of the benefits of ICT tools in mathematics teaching. They strongly agree that ICT tools enhance students' understanding of mathematical concepts and improve their engagement and motivation in mathematics classes. Teachers also recognize the potential of ICT tools in promoting problem-solving skills and providing opportunities for differentiation and personalized learning. However, opinions regarding student-centered learning, exploration, and creativity through ICT tools were more varied, suggesting a need for further investigation and support in these areas. In addition teachers expressed the need for continuous training on specific tools, curriculum alignment, and assessment methods.

3. Well-Being Literacy in the Academic Landscape: Trioethnographic Inquiry into Scholarly Writing

Abstract: Writing well and being well as academic writers is rarely spoken about, often hidden, and at times evaded. We believe that developing, maintaining, and growing well-being literacy not only engages the act but also allows awareness, reflection, and metacognitive thinking that enable mindful writing for well-being. Well-being literacy, the capacity to understand and employ wellbeing language for personal, collective, and global well-being, intrigues us. It encompasses nurturing, sustaining, and safeguarding well-being for individuals, groups, and systems to thrive. As scholars delving into well-being literacy, we, a diverse collective from across higher education career trajectories, investigate its role in scholarly writing and our academic realities. Our focus lies in unraveling the paradoxes inherent in higher education, particularly as researchers and writers. In this paper, we examine our own stories as a trioethnography and the impact of our writing practices on our own professional and personal lives. By doing so, we reveal the place of vulnerability, relationships, and meaning in who we are and are becoming as academic scholars. Guiding principles are shared with peers and colleagues in how they might cultivate writing practices while valuing and embodying well-being in the higher education space.

4. An Exploration of Learning and Teaching Methods in Agricultural Extension

Abstract: The Train-the-Trainer approach is widely used in Cooperative Extension education to efficiently disseminate research-based information to many clientele groups, including farmers. This paper compares the traditional Train-the-Trainer model to a comprehensive Collaborative Train-the-Trainer model and discusses weaknesses of the traditional model that are addressed in the Collaborative model. Sources of information used by farmers (growers) and overall effectiveness were measured through a survey instrument created and distributed to farmers in South and North Carolina. The Collaborative Train-the-Trainer model, which emphasizes peer-to-peer interaction and feedback loops, represents an enhanced approach for conceptualizing and implementing Extension educational programs.

5. Mixed Methods Evaluation of Nutrition Education for Limited Resource Audiences

Abstract: This paper presents an exploratory evaluation of pilot nutrition education programs, Plan Shop Save Cook (PSSC). Behavior change between two nutrition education programs, Buy Eat Live Healthy (BELH; n=92 and PSSC; n=42), was examined using pre- and post-program questionnaire responses. Both programs resulted in significant improvement in food resource management (FRM) behaviors; however, there was no significant difference in the amount of change between the programs. Qualitative data suggests participants perceived label reading as the most useful information provided in the PSSC programs. The current findings suggest short-term behavior change can be achieved with a limited dose program.

6. 'I Have Never Wanted to Quit More as a Teacher': How 'Divisive Issues' Legislation Impacts Teachers

Abstract: Some state legislatures have introduced a rash of bills designed to control how K-12 teachers discuss so-called 'divisive issues,' such as racism, sexism, and privilege. This legislation has prompted substantial news coverage on the impact of these laws. Sidelined in this discourse are the perspectives of teachers. This mixed methods study seeks to understand the impact this legislation may have on teachers. We identified three themes salient to how teachers as 'gatekeepers' (Thornton, 1991) anticipate these legislative efforts influencing their practice: curricular autonomy, context, and institutional guidance. The paper concludes with the significance of these findings, including potential policy implications at the national, state, and local levels.

7. Statistical and Geometrical properties of regularized Kernel Kullback-Leibler divergence

Abstract: In this paper, we study the statistical and geometrical properties of the Kullback-Leibler divergence with kernel covariance operators (KKL) introduced by Bach [2022]. Unlike the classical Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence that involves density ratios, the KKL compares probability distributions through covariance operators (embeddings) in a reproducible kernel Hilbert space (RKHS), and compute the Kullback-Leibler quantum divergence. This novel divergence hence shares parallel but different aspects with both the standard Kullback-Leibler between probability distributions and kernel embeddings metrics such as the maximum mean discrepancy. A limitation faced with the original KKL divergence is its inability to be defined for distributions with disjoint supports. To solve this problem, we propose in this paper a regularised variant that guarantees that the divergence is well defined for all distributions. We derive bounds that quantify the deviation of the regularised KKL to the original one, as well as finite-sample bounds. In addition, we provide a closed-form expression for the regularised KKL, specifically applicable when the distributions consist of finite sets of points, which makes it implementable. Furthermore, we derive a Wasserstein gradient descent scheme of the KKL divergence in the case of discrete distributions, and study empirically its properties to transport a set of points to a target distribution.

8. Constructive approaches to concentration inequalities with independent random variables

Abstract: Concentration inequalities, a major tool in probability theory, quantify how much a random variable deviates from a certain quantity. This paper proposes a systematic convex optimization approach to studying and generating concentration inequalities with independent random variables. Specifically, we extend the generalized problem of moments to independent random variables. We first introduce a variational approach that extends classical moment-generating functions, focusing particularly on first-order moment conditions. Second, we develop a polynomial approach, based on a hierarchy of sum-of-square approximations, to extend these techniques to higher-moment conditions. Building on these advancements, we refine Hoeffding's, Bennett's and Bernstein's inequalities, providing improved worst-case guarantees compared to existing results.

9. P2P-Bridge: Diffusion Bridges for 3D Point Cloud Denoising

Abstract: In this work, we tackle the task of point cloud denoising through a novel framework that adapts Diffusion Schr\"odinger bridges to points clouds. Unlike previous approaches that predict point-wise displacements from point features or learned noise distributions, our method learns an optimal transport plan between paired point clouds. Experiments on object datasets like PU-Net and real-world datasets such as ScanNet++ and ARKitScenes show that P2P-Bridge achieves significant improvements over existing methods. While our approach demonstrates strong results using only point coordinates, we also show that incorporating additional features, such as color information or point-wise DINOv2 features, further enhances the performance. 10. Endogenous Treatment Models with Social Interactions: An Application to the Impact of Exercise on Self-Esteem

Abstract: We address the estimation of endogenous treatment models with social interactions in both the treatment and outcome equations. We model the interactions between individuals in an internally consistent manner via a game theoretic approach based on discrete Bayesian games. This introduces a substantial computational burden in estimation which we address through a sequential version of the nested fixed point algorithm. We also provide some relevant treatment effects, and procedures for their estimation, which capture the impact on both the individual and the total sample. Our empirical application examines the impact of an individual's exercise frequency on her level of self-esteem. We find that an individual's exercise frequency is influenced by her expectation of her friends'. We also find that an individual's level of self-esteem is affected by her level of exercise and, at relatively lower levels of self-esteem, by the expectation of her friends' self-esteem.

11. Machine Learning and the Yield Curve: Tree-Based Macroeconomic Regime Switching

Abstract: We explore tree-based macroeconomic regime-switching in the context of the dynamic Nelson-Siegel (DNS) yield-curve model. In particular, we customize the tree-growing algorithm to partition macroeconomic variables based on the DNS model's marginal likelihood, thereby identifying regime-shifting patterns in the yield curve. Compared to traditional Markov-switching models, our model offers clear economic interpretation via macroeconomic linkages and ensures computational simplicity. In an empirical application to U.S. Treasury bond yields, we find (1) important yield curve regime switching, and (2) evidence that macroeconomic variables have predictive power for the yield curve when the short rate is high, but not in other regimes, thereby refining the notion of yield curve ``macro-spanning".

Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

13. Decoupling Power Quality Issues in Grid-Microgrid Network Using Microgrid Building Blocks

Abstract: Microgrids are evolving as promising options to enhance reliability of the connected transmission and distribution systems. Traditional design and deployment of microgrids require significant engineering analysis. Microgrid Building Blocks (MBB), consisting of modular blocks that integrate seamlessly to form effective microgrids, is an enabling concept for faster and broader adoption of microgrids. Back-to-Back converter placed at the point of common coupling of microgrid is an integral part of the MBB. This paper presents applications of MBB to decouple power quality issues in grid-microgrid network serving power quality sensitive loads such as data centers, new grid-edge technologies such as vehicle-to-grid generation, and serving electric vehicle charging loads during evacuation before disaster events. 14. Cognitive LLMs: Towards Integrating Cognitive Architectures and Large Language Models for Manufacturing Decision-making

Abstract: Resolving the dichotomy between the human-like yet constrained reasoning processes of Cognitive Architectures and the broad but often noisy inference behavior of Large Language Models (LLMs) remains a challenging but exciting pursuit, for enabling reliable machine reasoning capabilities in production systems. Because Cognitive Architectures are famously developed for the purpose of modeling the internal mechanisms of human cognitive decision-making at a computational level, new investigations consider the goal of informing LLMs with the knowledge necessary for replicating such processes, e.g., guided perception, memory, goal-setting, and action. Previous approaches that use LLMs for grounded decision-making struggle with complex reasoning tasks that require slower, deliberate cognition over fast and intuitive inference -- reporting issues related to the lack of sufficient grounding, as in hallucination. To resolve these challenges, we introduce LLM-ACTR, a novel neuro-symbolic architecture that provides human-aligned and versatile decision-making by integrating the ACT-R Cognitive Architecture with LLMs. Our framework extracts and embeds knowledge of ACT-R's internal decision-making process as latent neural representations, injects this information into trainable LLM adapter layers, and fine-tunes the LLMs for downstream prediction. Our experiments on novel Design for Manufacturing tasks show both improved task performance as well as improved grounded decision-making capability of our approach, compared to LLM-only baselines that leverage chain-of-thought reasoning strategies., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

15. Second-Order Raman Scattering in Exfoliated Black Phosphorus

Abstract: Second-order Raman scattering has been extensively studied in carbon-based nanomaterials, \emph{e.g.} nanotube and graphene, because it activates normally forbidden Raman modes that are sensitive to crystal disorder, such as defects, dopants, strain, etc. The sp$^2$-hybridized carbon systems are, however, the exception among most nanomaterials, where first-order Raman processes usually dominate. Here we report the identification of four second-order Raman modes, named $D_1$, $D_1'$, $D_2$ and $D_2'$, in exfoliated black phosphorus (P(black)), an elemental direct-gap semiconductor exhibiting strong mechanical and electronic anisotropies. Located in close proximity to the $A^1_g$ and $A^2_g$ modes, these new modes dominate at an excitation wavelength of 633 nm. Their evolutions as a function of sample thickness, excitation wavelength, and defect density indicate that they are defect-activated and involve high-momentum phonons in a doubly-resonant Raman process. \emph{Ab initio} simulations of a monolayer reveal that the $D'$ and $D$ modes occur through intravalley scatterings with split contributions in the armchair and zigzag directions, respectively. 16. Microgrid Building Blocks for Dynamic Decoupling and Black Start Applications

Abstract: Microgrids offer increased self-reliance and resilience at the grid's edge. They promote a significant transition to decentralized and renewable energy production by optimizing the utilization of local renewable sources. However, to maintain stable operations under all conditions and harness microgrids' full economic and technological potential, it is essential to integrate with the bulk grid and neighboring microgrids seamlessly. In this paper, we explore the capabilities of Back-to-Back (BTB) converters as a pivotal technology for interfacing microgrids, hybrid AC/DC grids, and bulk grids, by leveraging a comprehensive phasor-domain model integrated into GridLAB-D. The phasor-domain model is computationally efficient for simulating BTB with bulk grids and networked microgrids. We showcase the versatility of BTB converters (an integrated Microgrid Building Block) by configuring a two-microgrid network from a modified IEEE 13-node distribution system. These microgrids are equipped with diesel generators, photovoltaic units, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Abstract: Jupiter's moon Io is a highly compelling target for future exploration that offers critical insight into tidal dissipation processes and the geology of high heat flux worlds, including primitive planetary bodies, such as the early Earth, that are shaped by enhanced rates of volcanism. Io is also important for understanding the development of volcanogenic atmospheres and mass-exchange within the Jupiter System. However, fundamental questions remain about the state of Io's interior, surface, and atmosphere, as well as its role in the evolution of the Galilean satellites. The Io Volcano Observer (IVO) would address these questions by achieving the following three key goals: (A) Determine how and where tidal heat is generated inside Io; (B) Understand how tidal heat is transported to the surface of Io; and (C) Understand how Io is evolving. IVO was selected for Phase A study through the NASA Discovery program in 2020 and, in anticipation of a New Frontiers 5 opportunity, an enhanced IVO-NF mission concept was advanced that would increase the Baseline mission from 10 flybys to 20, with an improved radiation design; employ a Ka-band communications to double IVO's total data downlink; add a wide angle camera for color and stereo mapping; add a dust mass spectrometer; and lower the altitude of later flybys to enable new science. 18. Cross-Lingual Conversational Speech Summarization with Large Language Models

Abstract: Cross-lingual conversational speech summarization is an important problem, but suffers from a dearth of resources. While transcriptions exist for a number of languages, translated conversational speech is rare and datasets containing summaries are non-existent. We build upon the existing Fisher and Callhome Spanish-English Speech Translation corpus by supplementing the translations with summaries. The summaries are generated using GPT-4 from the reference translations and are treated as ground truth. The task is to generate similar summaries in the presence of transcription and translation errors. We build a baseline cascade-based system using open-source speech recognition and machine translation models. We test a range of LLMs for summarization and analyze the impact of transcription and translation errors. Adapting the Mistral-7B model for this task performs significantly better than off-the-shelf models and matches the performance of GPT-4.

19. New Coevolution Dynamic as an Optimization Strategy in Group Problem Solving

Abstract: In society, it is common to face problems that require collaboration with other people, from everyday challenges to complex tasks, such as group projects at work. In this context, the search for more effective problem-solving strategies becomes a topic of great interest. This paper presents a new dynamic that integrates coevolution into the NK model together with an Erd\"os-R\'enyi random network, allowing more than one neighbor update. We explore how this coevolution can be employed as an optimization strategy for solving group problems. In recent coevolution models, only one agent is removed and another is added to the neighborhood of influence. Here, we allow $L$ agents to be changed, which had a large impact on the system performance. In the analysis of the results, we consider rewiring as a way for the target agent to obtain information from individuals or groups that were not part of its neighborhood. 20. A Comprehensive Case Study on the Performance of Machine Learning Methods on the Classification of Solar Panel Electroluminescence Images

Abstract: Photovoltaics (PV) are widely used to harvest solar energy, an important form of renewable energy. Photovoltaic arrays consist of multiple solar panels constructed from solar cells. Solar cells in the field are vulnerable to various defects, and electroluminescence (EL) imaging provides effective and non-destructive diagnostics to detect those defects. We use multiple traditional machine learning and modern deep learning models to classify EL solar cell images into different functional/defective categories. Because of the asymmetry in the number of functional vs. defective cells, an imbalanced label problem arises in the EL image data. The current literature lacks insights on which methods and metrics to use for model training and prediction. 21. SAGA: A Participant-specific Examination of Story Alternatives and Goal Applicability for a Deeper Understanding of Complex Events

Abstract: Interpreting and assessing goal driven actions is vital to understanding and reasoning over complex events. It is important to be able to acquire the knowledge needed for this understanding, though doing so is challenging. We argue that such knowledge can be elicited through a participant achievement lens. We analyze a complex event in a narrative according to the intended achievements of the participants in that narrative, the likely future actions of the participants, and the likelihood of goal success. We collect 6.3K high quality goal and action annotations reflecting our proposed participant achievement lens, with an average weighted Fleiss-Kappa IAA of 80%. Our collection contains annotated alternate versions of each narrative. These alternate versions vary minimally from the "original" story, but can license drastically different inferences. Our findings suggest that while modern large language models can reflect some of the goal-based knowledge we study, they find it challenging to fully capture the design and intent behind concerted actions, even when the model pretraining included the data from which we extracted the goal knowledge. 22. Towards a Quantitative Analysis of Coarticulation with a Phoneme-to-Articulatory Model

Abstract: Prior coarticulation studies focus mainly on limited phonemic sequences and specific articulators, providing only approximate descriptions of the temporal extent and magnitude of coarticulation. This paper is an initial attempt to comprehensively investigate coarticulation. We leverage existing Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) datasets to develop and train a phoneme-to-articulatory (P2A) model that can generate realistic EMA for novel phoneme sequences and replicate known coarticulation patterns. We use model-generated EMA on 9K minimal word pairs to analyze coarticulation magnitude and extent up to eight phonemes from the coarticulation trigger, and compare coarticulation resistance across different consonants. Our findings align with earlier studies and suggest a longer-range coarticulation effect than previously found. 23. A Pipeline for Data-Driven Learning of Topological Features with Applications to Protein Stability Prediction

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a data-driven method to learn interpretable topological features of biomolecular data and demonstrate the efficacy of parsimonious models trained on topological features in predicting the stability of synthetic mini proteins. We compare models that leverage automatically-learned structural features against models trained on a large set of biophysical features determined by subject-matter experts (SME). Our models, based only on topological features of the protein structures, achieved 92%-99% of the performance of SME-based models in terms of the average precision score. By interrogating model performance and feature importance metrics, we extract numerous insights that uncover high correlations between topological features and SME features. We further showcase how combining topological features and SME features can lead to improved model performance over either feature set used in isolation, suggesting that, in some settings, topological features may provide new discriminating information not captured in existing SME features that are useful for protein stability prediction., Comment: 13 figures, 23 pages (without appendix and references)

24. Sparse Spiking Neural-like Membrane Systems on Graphics Processing Units

Abstract: The parallel simulation of Spiking Neural P systems is mainly based on a matrix representation, where the graph inherent to the neural model is encoded in an adjacency matrix. The simulation algorithm is based on a matrix-vector multiplication, which is an operation efficiently implemented on parallel devices. However, when the graph of a Spiking Neural P system is not fully connected, the adjacency matrix is sparse and hence, lots of computing resources are wasted in both time and memory domains. For this reason, two compression methods for the matrix representation were proposed in a previous work, but they were not implemented nor parallelized on a simulator. In this paper, they are implemented and parallelized on GPUs as part of a new Spiking Neural P system with delays simulator. Extensive experiments are conducted on high-end GPUs (RTX2080 and A100 80GB), and it is concluded that they outperform other solutions based on state-of-the-art GPU libraries when simulating Spiking Neural P systems.

25. Careful finite element simulations of cold rolling with accurate through-thickness resolution and prediction of residual stress

Abstract: In this paper, we carefully develop a finite element (FE) model that gives accurate through-thickness predictions of stress and strain distributions during the steady-state cold rolling process. These through-thickness predictions unveil an oscillatory pattern that is shown to have important consequences for residual stress in the rolled sheet. We believe this is the first time that through-thickness FE results have been accurately validated by comparison to non-FE results, in this case by comparison to a recent analytical model of through-thickness variation in cold rolling. While we use here the ABAQUS commercially available FE software, our observations are relevant to all FE simulations of cold rolling. Care is taken by considering both convergence in number of elements through thickness, convergence to a steady state, and the avoidance of other numerical artefacts such as shear locking and hourglassing. We find that previous FE models of cold rolling are usually woefully under-resolved through-thickness; e.g. using 10 elements through-thickness, while we require 60 here for convergence. Convergence of roll force and roll torque, used in previous studies to validate models, are shown to be poor indicators of through-thickness convergence. 26. The appeal of the gamma family distribution to protect the confidentiality of contingency tables

Abstract: Administrative databases, such as the English School Census (ESC), are rich sources of information that are potentially useful for researchers. For such data sources to be made available, however, strict guarantees of privacy would be required. To achieve this, synthetic data methods can be used. Such methods, when protecting the confidentiality of tabular data (contingency tables), often utilise the Poisson or Poisson-mixture distributions, such as the negative binomial (NBI). These distributions, however, are either equidispersed (in the case of the Poisson) or overdispersed (e.g. in the case of the NBI), which results in excessive noise being applied to large low-risk counts. This paper proposes the use of the (discretized) gamma family (GAF) distribution, which allows noise to be applied in a more bespoke fashion. Specifically, it allows less noise to be applied as cell counts become larger, providing an optimal balance in relation to the risk-utility trade-off. We illustrate the suitability of the GAF distribution on an administrative-type data set that is reminiscent of the ESC.

27. RoPotter: Toward Robotic Pottery and Deformable Object Manipulation with Structural Priors

Abstract: Humans are capable of continuously manipulating a wide variety of deformable objects into complex shapes. This is made possible by our intuitive understanding of material properties and mechanics of the object, for reasoning about object states even when visual perception is occluded. These capabilities allow us to perform diverse tasks ranging from cooking with dough to expressing ourselves with pottery-making. However, developing robotic systems to robustly perform similar tasks remains challenging, as current methods struggle to effectively model volumetric deformable objects and reason about the complex behavior they typically exhibit. To study the robotic systems and algorithms capable of deforming volumetric objects, we introduce a novel robotics task of continuously deforming clay on a pottery wheel. We propose a pipeline for perception and pottery skill-learning, called RoPotter, wherein we demonstrate that structural priors specific to the task of pottery-making can be exploited to simplify the pottery skill-learning process. Namely, we can project the cross-section of the clay to a plane to represent the state of the clay, reducing dimensionality. We also demonstrate a mesh-based method of occluded clay state recovery, toward robotic agents capable of continuously deforming clay. Our experiments show that by using the reduced representation with structural priors based on the deformation behaviors of the clay, RoPotter can perform the long-horizon pottery task with 44.4% lower final shape error compared to the state-of-the-art baselines.

28. Through-Thickness Modelling of Metal Rolling using Multiple-Scale Asymptotics

Abstract: A new semi-analytic model of the metal rolling processes is presented and validated against finite element simulations. The model generalizes the classical Slab Method of cold rolling, and for the first time is able to predict the through-thickness stress and strain oscillations present in long-aspect-ratio roll gaps. The model is based on the asymptotic Method of Multiple-Scales, with the systematic assumptions of a long thin roll gap and a comparably small Coulomb friction coefficient. The leading-order solution varies only on the long length scale of the roll gap length $\hat{\ell}$, and matches with Slab Theory. The next-order correction varies on both the long length scale and the short length scale of the workpiece thickness $2\hat{h}_0$, and reveals rapid stress and strain oscillation both in the rolling direction and through-thickness. For this initial derivation, the model assumes a rigid perfectly-plastic material behaviour. Despite these strong assumptions, the model is shown to compare well with finite element simulations using realistic elasticity and hardening material models. These assumptions facilitate the simplest possible model to provide a foundational understanding of the complex through-thickness behaviour observed in the finite element simulations, while requiring an order of only seconds to compute. Abstract: ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

30. Harvesting Textual and Structured Data from the HAL Publication Repository

Abstract: HAL (Hyper Articles en Ligne) is the French national publication repository, used by most higher education and research organizations for their open science policy. As a digital library, it is a rich repository of scholarly documents, but its potential for advanced research has been underutilized. We present HALvest, a unique dataset that bridges the gap between citation networks and the full text of papers submitted on HAL. We craft our dataset by filtering HAL for scholarly publications, resulting in approximately 700,000 documents, spanning 34 languages across 13 identified domains, suitable for language model training, and yielding approximately 16.5 billion tokens (with 8 billion in French and 7 billion in English, the most represented languages). We transform the metadata of each paper into a citation network, producing a directed heterogeneous graph. This graph includes uniquely identified authors on HAL, as well as all open submitted papers, and their citations. We provide a baseline for authorship attribution using the dataset, implement a range of state-of-the-art models in graph representation learning for link prediction, and discuss the usefulness of our generated knowledge graph structure.

31. Improving 2D Feature Representations by 3D-Aware Fine-Tuning

Abstract: Current visual foundation models are trained purely on unstructured 2D data, limiting their understanding of 3D structure of objects and scenes. In this work, we show that fine-tuning on 3D-aware data improves the quality of emerging semantic features. We design a method to lift semantic 2D features into an efficient 3D Gaussian representation, which allows us to re-render them for arbitrary views. Using the rendered 3D-aware features, we design a fine-tuning strategy to transfer such 3D awareness into a 2D foundation model. We demonstrate that models fine-tuned in that way produce features that readily improve downstream task performance in semantic segmentation and depth estimation through simple linear probing. Notably, though fined-tuned on a single indoor dataset, the improvement is transferable to a variety of indoor datasets and out-of-domain datasets. Abstract: A rich inventory of complex organic molecules (COMs) has been observed in high abundances in the gas phase toward Class 0 protostars. These molecules are suggested to be formed in ices and sublimate in the warm inner envelope close to the protostar. However, only the most abundant COM, methanol (CH3OH), has been firmly detected in ices before the era of James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Now it is possible to detect the interstellar ices of other COMs and constrain their ice column densities quantitatively. We aim to determine the column densities of several oxygen-bearing COMs (O-COMs) in both gas and ice for two low-mass protostellar sources, NGC 1333 IRAS 2A and B1-c, as case studies in our JWST Observations of Young protoStars (JOYS+) program. By comparing the column density ratios w.r.t. CH3OH between both phases measured in the same sources, we can probe into the evolution of COMs from ice to gas in the early stages of star formation. We are able to fit the fingerprints range of COM ices between 6.8 and 8.8 um in the JWST/MIRI-MRS spectra of B1-c using similar components as recently used for IRAS 2A. We claim detection of CH4, OCN-, HCOO-, HCOOH, CH3CHO, C2H5OH, CH3OCH3, CH3OCHO, and CH3COCH3 in B1-c, and upper limits are estimated for SO2, CH3COOH, and CH3CN. The comparison of O-COM ratios w.r.t CH3OH between ice and gas shows two different cases. 1) the column density ratios of CH3OCHO and CH3OCH3 match well between the two phases, which may be attributed to a direct inheritance from ice to gas or strong chemical links with CH3OH. 2) the ice ratios of CH3CHO and C2H5OH w.r.t. CH3OH are higher than the gas ratios by 1-2 orders of magnitudes. 34. Boosted generalized normal distributions: Integrating machine learning with operations knowledge

Abstract: Applications of machine learning (ML) techniques to operational settings often face two challenges: i) ML methods mostly provide point predictions whereas many operational problems require distributional information; and ii) They typically do not incorporate the extensive body of knowledge in the operations literature, particularly the theoretical and empirical findings that characterize specific distributions. We introduce a novel and rigorous methodology, the Boosted Generalized Normal Distribution ($b$GND), to address these challenges. The Generalized Normal Distribution (GND) encompasses a wide range of parametric distributions commonly encountered in operations, and $b$GND leverages gradient boosting with tree learners to flexibly estimate the parameters of the GND as functions of covariates. We establish $b$GND's statistical consistency, thereby extending this key property to special cases studied in the ML literature that lacked such guarantees. Using data from a large academic emergency department in the United States, we show that the distributional forecasting of patient wait and service times can be meaningfully improved by leveraging findings from the healthcare operations literature. Specifically, $b$GND performs 6% and 9% better than the distribution-agnostic ML benchmark used to forecast wait and service times respectively. Further analysis suggests that these improvements translate into a 9% increase in patient satisfaction and a 4% reduction in mortality for myocardial infarction patients. 35. Enhanced Feature Learning via Regularisation: Integrating Neural Networks and Kernel Methods

Abstract: We propose a new method for feature learning and function estimation in supervised learning via regularised empirical risk minimisation. Our approach considers functions as expectations of Sobolev functions over all possible one-dimensional projections of the data. This framework is similar to kernel ridge regression, where the kernel is $\mathbb{E}_w ( k^{(B)}(w^\top x,w^\top x^\prime))$, with $k^{(B)}(a,b) := \min(|a|, |b|)1_{ab>0}$ the Brownian kernel, and the distribution of the projections $w$ is learnt. This can also be viewed as an infinite-width one-hidden layer neural network, optimising the first layer's weights through gradient descent and explicitly adjusting the non-linearity and weights of the second layer. We introduce an efficient computation method for the estimator, called Brownian Kernel Neural Network (BKerNN), using particles to approximate the expectation. The optimisation is principled due to the positive homogeneity of the Brownian kernel. Using Rademacher complexity, we show that BKerNN's expected risk converges to the minimal risk with explicit high-probability rates of $O( \min((d/n)^{1/2}, n^{-1/6}))$ (up to logarithmic factors). Numerical experiments confirm our optimisation intuitions, and BKerNN outperforms kernel ridge regression, and favourably compares to a one-hidden layer neural network with ReLU activations in various settings and real data sets.

36. Integrated high-performance error correction for continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Abstract: An integrated error-correction scheme with high throughput, low frame errors rate (FER) and high reconciliation efficiency under low signal to noise ratio (SNR) is one of the major bottlenecks to realize high-performance and low-cost continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD). To solve this long-standing problem, a novel two-stage error correction method with limited precision that is suitable for integration given limited on-chip hardware resource while maintaining excellent decoding performance is proposed, and experimentally verified on a commercial FPGA. Compared to state-of-art results, the error-correction throughput can be improved more than one order of magnitude given FER<0.1 based on the proposed method, where 544.03 Mbps and 393.33 Mbps real-time error correction is achieved for typical 0.2 and 0.1 code rate, respectively. Besides, compared with traditional decoding method, the secure key rate (SKR) for CV-QKD under composable security framework can be improved by 140.09% and 122.03% by using the proposed two-stage decoding method for codes rate 0.2 and 0.1, which can support 32.70 Mbps and 5.66 Mbps real-time SKR under typical transmission distances of 25 km and 50 km, correspondingly. The record-breaking results paves the way for large-scale deployment of high-rate integrated CV-QKD systems in metropolitan quantum secure network.

37. STrack: A Reliable Multipath Transport for AI/ML Clusters

Abstract: Emerging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) workloads present new challenges of managing the collective communication used in distributed training across hundreds or even thousands of GPUs. This paper presents STrack, a novel hardware-offloaded reliable transport protocol aimed at improving the performance of AI /ML workloads by rethinking key aspects of the transport layer. STrack optimizes congestion control and load balancing in tandem: it incorporates an adaptive load balancing algorithm leveraging ECN, while adopts RTT as multi-bit congestion indicators for precise congestion window adjustment. Additionally, STrack facilitates out-of-order delivery, selective retransmission, and swift loss recovery in hardware for multipath environment. The extensive simulation comparing STrack and RoCEv2 demonstrates that STrack outperforms RoCEv2 by up to 6X with synthetic workloads and by 27.4% with collective workloads, even with the optimized RoCEv2 system setup.

38. Computing the second and third systoles of a combinatorial surface

Abstract: Given a weighted, undirected graph $G$ cellularly embedded on a topological surface $S$, we describe algorithms to compute the second shortest and third shortest closed walks of $G$ that are homotopically non-trivial in $S$. Our algorithms run in $O(n^2\log n)$ time for the second shortest walk and in $O(n^3)$ time for the third shortest walk. We also show how to reduce the running time for the second shortest homotopically non-trivial closed walk to $O(n\log n)$ when both the genus and the number of boundaries are fixed. Our algorithms rely on a careful analysis of the configurations of the first three shortest homotopically non-trivial curves in $S$. As an intermediate step, we also describe how to compute a shortest essential arc between \emph{one} pair of vertices or between \emph{all} pairs of vertices of a given boundary component of $S$ in $O(n^2)$ time or $O(n^3)$ time, respectively., Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The Chandra Source Catalog (CSC) is a virtual X-ray astrophysics facility that enables both detailed individual source studies and statistical studies of large samples of X-ray sources detected in ACIS and HRC-I imaging observations obtained by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The catalog provides carefully-curated, high-quality, and uniformly calibrated and analyzed tabulated positional, spatial, photometric, spectral, and temporal source properties, as well as science-ready X-ray data products. The latter includes multiple types of source- and field-based FITS format products that can be used as a basis for further research, significantly simplifying followup analysis of scientifically meaningful source samples. We discuss in detail the algorithms used for the CSC Release 2 Series, including CSC 2.0, which includes 317,167 unique X-ray sources on the sky identified in observations released publicly through the end of 2014, and CSC 2.1, which adds Chandra data released through the end of 2021 and expands the catalog to 407,806 sources. Besides adding more recent observations, the CSC Release 2 Series includes multiple algorithmic enhancements that provide significant improvements over earlier releases. The compact source sensitivity limit for most observations is ~5 photons over most of the field of view, which is ~2x fainter than Release 1, achieved by co-adding observations and using an optimized source detection approach. A Bayesian X-ray aperture photometry code produces robust fluxes even in crowded fields and for low count sources. Abstract: The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

Abstract: The goal of the PolarKID project is testing a new method for the measurement of polarized sources, in order to identify all the possible instrumental systematic effects that could impact the detection of CMB B-modes of polarization. 42. DexGrasp-Diffusion: Diffusion-based Unified Functional Grasp Synthesis Pipeline for Multi-Dexterous Robotic Hands

Abstract: The versatility and adaptability of human grasping catalyze advancing dexterous robotic manipulation. While significant strides have been made in dexterous grasp generation, current research endeavors pivot towards optimizing object manipulation while ensuring functional integrity, emphasizing the synthesis of functional grasps following desired affordance instructions. This paper addresses the challenge of synthesizing functional grasps tailored to diverse dexterous robotic hands by proposing DexGrasp-Diffusion, an end-to-end modularized diffusion-based pipeline. DexGrasp-Diffusion integrates MultiHandDiffuser, a novel unified data-driven diffusion model for multi-dexterous hands grasp estimation, with DexDiscriminator, which employs a Physics Discriminator and a Functional Discriminator with open-vocabulary setting to filter physically plausible functional grasps based on object affordances. The experimental evaluation conducted on the MultiDex dataset provides substantiating evidence supporting the superior performance of MultiHandDiffuser over the baseline model in terms of success rate, grasp diversity, and collision depth. Moreover, we demonstrate the capacity of DexGrasp-Diffusion to reliably generate functional grasps for household objects aligned with specific affordance instructions.

43. An Adaptive Indoor Localization Approach Using WiFi RSSI Fingerprinting with SLAM-Enabled Robotic Platform and Deep Neural Networks

Abstract: Indoor localization plays a vital role in the era of the IoT and robotics, with WiFi technology being a prominent choice due to its ubiquity. We present a method for creating WiFi fingerprinting datasets to enhance indoor localization systems and address the gap in WiFi fingerprinting dataset creation. We used the Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) algorithm and employed a robotic platform to construct precise maps and localize robots in indoor environments. We developed software applications to facilitate data acquisition, fingerprinting dataset collection, and accurate ground truth map building. Subsequently, we aligned the spatial information generated via the SLAM with the WiFi scans to create a comprehensive WiFi fingerprinting dataset. The created dataset was used to train a deep neural network (DNN) for indoor localization, which can prove the usefulness of grid density. We conducted experimental validation within our office environment to demonstrate the proposed method's effectiveness, including a heatmap from the dataset showcasing the spatial distribution of WiFi signal strengths for the testing access points placed within the environment. Notably, our method offers distinct advantages over existing approaches as it eliminates the need for a predefined map of the environment, requires no preparatory steps, lessens human intervention, creates a denser fingerprinting dataset, and reduces the WiFi fingerprinting dataset creation time. Our method achieves 26% more accurate localization than the other methods and can create a six times denser fingerprinting dataset in one-third of the time compared to the traditional method. 44. Improved analysis of strong-interaction-stable doubly-bottom tetraquarks on the lattice

Abstract: We update earlier lattice results for the binding energies of the flavor antitriplet of strong-interaction-stable doubly bottom, $J^P=1^+$ tetraquarks, employing an extended sink construction which produces significantly improved ground-state effective-mass plateaus, as well as new, larger-volume ensembles which reduce possible finite-volume effects at lighter pion masses. The updated bindings are $115(17)$ MeV for the $I=0$ member of the antitriplet and $47(8)$ MeV for its $I=1/2$ partner. We also provide an update of our earlier study of the variable heavy mass dependence of binding in the $1^+$ channel and new results on this dependence for binding in the $0^+$ channel, accessible when the two heavy quarks have unequal masses. Implications of these results of potential relevance to experimental searches for signals of the production of doubly bottom tetraquarks and/or a possible bottom-charm partner of the $T_{cc}$ are also discussed., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

45. Variational Bayes for Mixture of Gaussian Structural Equation Models

Abstract: Structural equation models (SEMs) are commonly used to study the structural relationship between observed variables and latent constructs. Recently, Bayesian fitting procedures for SEMs have received more attention thanks to their potential to facilitate the adoption of more flexible model structures, and variational approximations have been shown to provide fast and accurate inference for Bayesian analysis of SEMs. However, the application of variational approximations is currently limited to very simple, elemental SEMs. We develop mean-field variational Bayes algorithms for two SEM formulations for data that present non-Gaussian features such as skewness and multimodality. The proposed models exploit the use of mixtures of Gaussians, include covariates for the analysis of latent traits and consider missing data. We also examine two variational information criteria for model selection that are straightforward to compute in our variational inference framework. Abstract: In order to develop robots that can effectively serve as versatile and capable home assistants, it is crucial for them to reliably perceive and interact with a wide variety of objects across diverse environments. To this end, we proposed Open Vocabulary Mobile Manipulation as a key benchmark task for robotics: finding any object in a novel environment and placing it on any receptacle surface within that environment. We organized a NeurIPS 2023 competition featuring both simulation and real-world components to evaluate solutions to this task. Our baselines on the most challenging version of this task, using real perception in simulation, achieved only an 0.8% success rate; by the end of the competition, the best participants achieved an 10.8\% success rate, a 13x improvement. We observed that the most successful teams employed a variety of methods, yet two common threads emerged among the best solutions: enhancing error detection and recovery, and improving the integration of perception with decision-making processes. In this paper, we detail the results and methodologies used, both in simulation and real-world settings. We discuss the lessons learned and their implications for future research. Additionally, we compare performance in real and simulated environments, emphasizing the necessity for robust generalization to novel settings.

47. Enhancing Vision-Language Models with Scene Graphs for Traffic Accident Understanding

Abstract: Recognizing a traffic accident is an essential part of any autonomous driving or road monitoring system. An accident can appear in a wide variety of forms, and understanding what type of accident is taking place may be useful to prevent it from reoccurring. The task of being able to classify a traffic scene as a specific type of accident is the focus of this work. We approach the problem by likening a traffic scene to a graph, where objects such as cars can be represented as nodes, and relative distances and directions between them as edges. This representation of an accident can be referred to as a scene graph, and is used as input for an accident classifier. Better results can be obtained with a classifier that fuses the scene graph input with representations from vision and language. This work introduces a multi-stage, multimodal pipeline to pre-process videos of traffic accidents, encode them as scene graphs, and align this representation with vision and language modalities for accident classification. When trained on 4 classes, our method achieves a balanced accuracy score of 57.77% on an (unbalanced) subset of the popular Detection of Traffic Anomaly (DoTA) benchmark, representing an increase of close to 5 percentage points from the case where scene graph information is not taken into account., Comment: Accepted: 1st Workshop on Semantic Reasoning and Goal Understanding in Robotics, at the Robotics Science and Systems Conference (SemRob @ RSS 2024)

48. Relic Abundance of Dark Matter with $\Delta$(54) Flavor Symmetry

Abstract: In this work we discuss the neutrino phenomenology in a $\Delta(54)$ discrete flavor symmetry and evaluate the relic abundance of dark matter (DM) and active neutrino-DM mixing angle considering various cosmological constraints. We introduced two Standard Model Higgs particles along with vector-like fermions and a new particle (S) which is a gauge singlet in the Standard Model. This modification leads to a mass matrix that diverges from the tribimaximal neutrino mixing pattern resulting in a non-zero reactor angle ($\theta_{13}$). We also incorporated a $ Z_2 \otimes Z_3 \otimes Z_4$ symmetry for the specific interactions in our model. 49. Conditional Rank-Rank Regression

Abstract: Rank-rank regressions are widely used in economic research to evaluate phenomena such as intergenerational income persistence or mobility. However, when covariates are incorporated to capture between-group persistence, the resulting coefficients can be difficult to interpret as such. We propose the conditional rank-rank regression, which uses conditional ranks instead of unconditional ranks, to measure average within-group income persistence. This property is analogous to that of the unconditional rank-rank regression that measures the overall income persistence. The difference between conditional and unconditional rank-rank regression coefficients therefore can measure between-group persistence. We develop a flexible estimation approach using distribution regression and establish a theoretical framework for large sample inference. An empirical study on intergenerational income mobility in Switzerland demonstrates the advantages of this approach. The study reveals stronger intergenerational persistence between fathers and sons compared to fathers and daughters, with the within-group persistence explaining 62% of the overall income persistence for sons and 52% for daughters. 50. High-Dimensional Distributed Sparse Classification with Scalable Communication-Efficient Global Updates

Abstract: As the size of datasets used in statistical learning continues to grow, distributed training of models has attracted increasing attention. These methods partition the data and exploit parallelism to reduce memory and runtime, but suffer increasingly from communication costs as the data size or the number of iterations grows. Recent work on linear models has shown that a surrogate likelihood can be optimized locally to iteratively improve on an initial solution in a communication-efficient manner. However, existing versions of these methods experience multiple shortcomings as the data size becomes massive, including diverging updates and efficiently handling sparsity. In this work we develop solutions to these problems which enable us to learn a communication-efficient distributed logistic regression model even beyond millions of features. In our experiments we demonstrate a large improvement in accuracy over distributed algorithms with only a few distributed update steps needed, and similar or faster runtimes.
