Basada en un hecho real, este clásico del terror convertido en una película de culto analiza como el método científico es capaz de dar respuestas al mito del muerto viviente, a través del vudú en la población de Haití, por la inhalación de una potente droga en polvo que contiene altas dosis de tetrodotoxina. Este filme simula el estado agudo de catalepsia de los pacientes y las pruebas sometidas para certificar la aparente defunción tras la confirmación del cese irreversible de las funciones cardiorrespiratorias o encefálica, debido a la ausencia de reflejos troncoencefálicos a causa de los efectos a largo plazo que presenta la droga. Además, a pesar de que el paciente no fallece y es enterrado siendo consciente de todo el proceso, el filme permite reflexionar en los estudiantes la alta carga psicológica, tanto del propio paciente como de la población, que profundiza en los estados de terror al suponer que es un esclavo retornado de la muerte sin alma y sin voluntad.

Hemos logrado dilucidar el origen del ensayo titulado “De la literatura de los romanos” publicado en el Espíritu de los mejores diarios literarios que se publican en Europa el año de 1789. Se trata de la traducción del “Essai Historique sur la Littérature des Romains”, publicado en el Journal de Trevoux en 1751, que, a su vez, es traducción y adaptación del “Essay Concerning the Roman Learning”, incluido en el libro Romae Antiquae Notitia: Or, The Antiquities of Rome, de Basil Kennett, publicado inicialmente en 1696. Tanto el cambio de lengua (inglés, francés y español) como de época (1696, 1751 y 1789) en cada documento va a configurar una doble transferencia cultural observable, sobre todo, en la idea de que el poder monárquico de Augusto no fue la causa de la decadencia militar y artística de Roma.

Abstract Background Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by altered perception, mood, and behavior that profoundly impacts patients and society despite its relatively low prevalence. Sex-based differences have been described in schizophrenia epidemiology, symptomatology and outcomes. Different studies explored the impact of schizophrenia in the brain transcriptome, however we lack a consensus transcriptomic profile that considers sex and differentiates specific cerebral regions. Methods We performed a systematic review on bulk RNA-sequencing studies of post-mortem brain samples. Then, we fulfilled differential expression analysis on each study and summarized their results with regions-specific meta-analyses (prefrontal cortex and hippocampus) and a global all-studies meta-analysis. Finally, we used the consensus transcriptomic profiles to functionally characterize the impact of schizophrenia in males and females by protein-protein interaction networks, enriched biological processes and dysregulated transcription factors. Results We discovered the sex-based dysregulation of 265 genes in the prefrontal cortex, 1.414 genes in the hippocampus and 66 genes in the all-studies meta-analyses. The functional characterization of these gene sets unveiled increased processes related to immune response functions in the prefrontal cortex in male and the hippocampus in female schizophrenia patients and the overexpression of genes related to neurotransmission and synapses in the prefrontal cortex of female schizophrenia patients. Considering a meta-analysis of all brain regions available, we encountered the relative overexpression of genes related to synaptic plasticity and transmission in females and the overexpression of genes involved in organizing genetic information and protein folding in male schizophrenia patients. The protein-protein interaction networks and transcription factors activity analyses supported these sex-based profiles. Conclusions Our results report multiple sex-based transcriptomic alterations in specific brain regions of schizophrenia patients, which provides new insight into the role of sex in schizophrenia. Moreover, we unveil a partial overlapping of inflammatory processes in the prefrontal cortex of males and the hippocampus of females.

Abstract Background Presurgical optimisation programmes decrease the risk of postoperative complications, reduce hospital stays and speed up patient recovery. They usually involve a multidisciplinary team addressing physical, nutritional and psychosocial issues. The objective of this study was to assess the results of implementing a presurgical optimisation programme led by a liaison nurse in patients undergoing major surgery in a primary general hospital. Methods An observational, retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional, comparative study based on the revision of patients’ health records undergoing major surgery between January 2019 and December 2022. Patients entering the presurgical optimisation programme (intervention group) were compared with patients receiving usual medical care (control group). The presurgical optimisation programme consisted of oral nutritional supplementation, physical exercise, strengthening of lung capacity and psychological and emotional support. Frequency (%) of surgery complications and use of healthcare resources (duration of hospitalisation, time spent in the intensive care unit (ICU), and readmission) at day 30 were recorded. Descriptive statistics were applied. Results Two hundred eleven patients (58.5% men, mean age: 65.76 years (SD 11.5), 75.2%. non-smokers; mean body mass index (BMI): 28.32 (SD 5.38); mean Nutritional Risk Score (NRS) 3.71 (SD 1.35; oncology diagnosis: 88.6%) were included: 135 in the intervention group, and 76 in the control group. The average duration of the presurgical optimisation programme was 20 days (SD 5). Abstract Background Understanding the enduring respiratory consequences of severe COVID-19 is crucial for comprehensive patient care. This study aims to evaluate the impact of post-COVID conditions on respiratory sequelae of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Methods We examined 88 survivors of COVID-19-associated severe ARDS six months post-intensive care unit (ICU) discharge. Assessments included clinical and functional evaluation as well as plasma biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and viral response. Additionally, an in vitro model using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) explored the direct impact of post-COVID plasma on endothelial function. Results Post-COVID patients with impaired gas exchange demonstrated persistent endothelial inflammation marked by elevated ICAM-1, IL-8, CCL-2, and ET-1 plasma levels. Concurrently, systemic inflammation, evidenced by NLRP3 overexpression and elevated levels of IL-6, sCD40-L, and C-reactive protein, was associated with endothelial dysfunction biomarkers and increased in post-COVID patients with impaired gas exchange. T-cell activation, reflected in CD69 expression, and persistently elevated levels of interferon-β (IFN-β) further contributed to sustained inflammation. The in vitro model confirmed that patient plasma, with altered levels of sCD40-L and IFN-β proteins, has the capacity to alter endothelial function. Conclusions Six months post-ICU discharge, survivors of COVID-19-associated ARDS exhibited sustained elevation in endothelial dysfunction biomarkers, correlating with the severity of impaired gas exchange. NLRP3 inflammasome activity and persistent T-cell activation indicate on going inflammation contributing to persistent endothelial dysfunction, potentially intensified by sustained viral immune response.

Machine Learning (ML) has extended its use in several domains to support complex analyses of data. The medical field, in which significant quantities of data are continuously generated, is one of the domains that can benefit from the application of ML pipelines to solve specific problems such as diagnosis, classification, disease detection, segmentation, assessment of organ functions, etc. However, while health professionals are experts in their domain, they can lack programming and theoretical skills regarding ML applications. Therefore, it is necessary to train health professionals in using these paradigms to get the most out of the application of ML algorithms to their data. In this work, we present a platform to assist non-expert users in defining ML pipelines in the health domain. The system’s design focuses on providing an educational experience to understand how ML algorithms work and how to interpret their outcomes and on fostering a flexible architecture to allow the evolution of the available components, algorithms, and heuristics.

Medialab Prado fue una institución de referencia internacional dedicada a la democratización de la tecnocultura. En lugar de adoptar un modelo de exposición tradicional, impulsó la producción cultural como un proceso abierto y permeable. Este artículo explora los elementos que hicieron de este espacio un lugar único, subrayando la importancia de la relación entre su arquitectura, la gestión espacial y los laboratorios ciudadanos. A partir de una breve historia de su origen, se profundiza en la evolución del concepto de laboratorio hasta el modelo de laboratorio ciudadano, analizando su contexto tecnocultural, urbano y arquitectónico. Además, se exploran sus propiedades espaciales en diálogo con las ideas de una 'ciudad abierta' propuestas por Richard Sennett en Construir y habitar: Ética para la ciudad, concluyendo con los aprendizajes clave que surgen de este caso emblemático.

Summary: Background: Surgical care holds significant importance in healthcare, especially in low and middle-income countries, as at least 50% of the 4.2 million deaths within the initial 30 days following surgery take place in these countries. The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery proposed six indicators to enhance surgical care. In Colombia, studies have been made using secondary data. However, strategies to reduce perioperative mortality have not been implemented. This study aims to describe the fourth indicator, perioperative mortality rate (POMR), with primary data in Colombia. Methods: A multicentre prospective cohort study was conducted across 54 centres (hospitals) in Colombia. Each centre selected a 7-day recruitment period between 05/2022 and 01/2023. Inclusion criteria involved patients over 18 years of age undergoing surgical procedures in operating rooms. Data quality was ensured through a verification guideline and statistical analysis using mixed-effects multilevel modelling with a case mix analysis of mortality by procedure-related, patient-related, and hospital-related conditions. Findings: 3807 patients were included with a median age of 48 (IQR 32–64), 80.3% were classified as ASA I or II, and 27% of the procedures had a low-surgical complexity. Leading procedures were Orthopedics (19.2%) and Gynaecology/Obstetrics (17.7%). According to the Clavien–Dindo scale, postoperative complications were distributed in major complications (11.7%, 10.68–12.76) and any complication (31.6%, 30.09–33.07). POMR stood at 1.9% (1.48–2.37), with elective and emergency surgery mortalities at 0.7% (0.40–1.23) and 3% (2.3–3.89) respectively. Interpretation: The POMR was higher than the ratio reported in previous national studies, even when patients had a low–risk profile and low-complexity procedures. The present research represents significant public health progress with valuable insights for national decision-makers to improve the quality of surgical care. Background: Age represents a significant risk factor for the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, recent research has documented an influencing role of sex in several features of AD. Understanding the impact of sex on specific molecular mechanisms associated with AD remains a critical challenge to creating tailored therapeutic interventions. Methods: The exploration of the sex-based differential impact on disease (SDID) in AD used a systematic review to first select transcriptomic studies of AD with data regarding sex in the period covering 2002 to 2021 with a focus on the primary brain regions affected by AD - the cortex (CT) and the hippocampus (HP). A differential expression analysis for each study and two tissue-specific meta-analyses were then performed. Focusing on the CT due to the presence of significant SDID-related alterations, a comprehensive functional characterization was conducted: protein-protein network interaction and over-representation analyses to explore biological processes and pathways and a VIPER analysis to estimate transcription factor activity. Results: We selected 8 CT and 5 HP studies from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) repository for tissue-specific meta-analyses. We detected 389 significantly altered genes in the SDID comparison in the CT. Generally, female AD patients displayed more affected genes than males; we grouped said genes into six subsets according to their expression profile in female and male AD patients. Only subset I (repressed genes in female AD patients) displayed significant results during functional profiling. Female AD patients demonstrated more significant impairments in biological processes related to the regulation and organization of synapsis and pathways linked to neurotransmitters (glutamate and GABA) and protein folding, Aβ aggregation, and accumulation compared to male AD patients. These findings could partly explain why we observe more pronounced cognitive decline in female AD patients. Finally, we detected 23 transcription factors with different activation patterns according to sex, with some associated with AD for the first time. Conclusion: Our meta-analyses indicate the existence of differences in AD-related mechanisms in female and male patients. These sex-based differences will represent the basis for new hypotheses and could significantly impact precision medicine and improve diagnosis and clinical outcomes in AD patients.

IntroductionIn post-COVID survivors, transforming growth factor-beta-1 (TGF-β1) might mediate fibroblast activation, resulting in persistent fibrosis.MethodsIn this study, 82 survivors of COVID-19-associated ARDS were examined at 6- and 24-months post-ICU discharge. At 6-months, quantitative CT analysis of lung attenuation was performed and active TGF-β1 was measured in blood and exhaled breath condensate (EBC).ResultsAt 6-months of ICU-discharge, patients with reduced DmCO/alveolar volume ratio exhibited higher plasma and EBC levels of active TGF-β1. Plasma TGF-β1 levels were elevated in dyspneic survivors and directly related to the high-attenuation lung volume. In vitro, plasma and EBC from survivors induced profibrotic changes in human primary fibroblasts in a TGF-β receptor-dependent manner. Finally, at 6-months, plasma and EBC active TGF-β1 levels discriminated patients who, 24-months post-ICU-discharge, developed gas exchange impairment.DiscussionTGF-β1 pathway plays a pivotal role in the early-phase fibrotic abnormalities in COVID-19-induced ARDS survivors, with significant implications for long-term functional impairment.

En este artículo se analizan las interacciones incestuosas presentes en dos novelas de Diamela Eltit: Por la patria (1986) y Los trabajadores de la muerte (1998). Se plantea que el ejercicio incestuoso les sirve a los personajes para cuestionar, desacatar y subvertir los órdenes establecidos de asociación. Para sostener este planteamiento se hace una revisión crítica de las lecturas realizadas por Barrientos, Brito, Carreño y Scarabelli, para luego realizar un análisis minucioso de las tensiones incestuosas presentes en ambas novelas.

Summary: Background: The clinical relevance of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) after discontinuing anticoagulation in patients with COVID-19-associated VTE remains uncertain. We estimated the incidence rates and mortality of VTE recurrences developing after discontinuing anticoagulation in patients with COVID-19-associated VTE. Methods: A prospective, multicenter, non-interventional study was conducted between March 25, 2020, and July 26, 2023, including patients who had discontinued anticoagulation after at least 3 months of therapy. All patients from the registry were analyzed during the study period to verify inclusion criteria. Patients with superficial vein thrombosis, those who did not receive at least 3 months of anticoagulant therapy, and those who were followed for less than 15 days after discontinuing anticoagulation were excluded. Outcomes were: 1) Incidence rates of symptomatic VTE recurrences, and 2) fatal PE. The rate of VTE recurrences was defined as the number of patients with recurrent VTE divided by the patient-years at risk of recurrent VTE during the period when anticoagulation was discontinued. Findings: Among 1106 patients with COVID-19-associated VTE (age 62.3 ± 14.4 years; 62.9% male) followed-up for 12.5 months (p25-75, 6.3–20.1) after discontinuing anticoagulation, there were 38 VTE recurrences (3.5%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.5–4.7%), with a rate of 3.1 per 100 patient-years (95% CI: 2.2–4.2). No patient died of recurrent PE (0%, 95% CI: 0–7.6%). Subgroup analyses showed that patients with diagnosis in 2021–2022 (vs. 2020) (Hazard ratio [HR] 2.86; 95% CI 1.45–5.68) or those with isolated deep vein thrombosis (vs. pulmonary embolism) (HR 2.31; 95% CI 1.19–4.49) had significantly higher rates of VTE recurrences. Interpretation: In patients with COVID-19-associated VTE who discontinued anticoagulation after at least 3 months of treatment, the incidence rate of recurrent VTE and the case-fatality rate was low. Therefore, it conceivable that long-term anticoagulation may not be required for many patients with COVID-19-associated VTE, although further research is needed to confirm these findings. Abstract Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium causes gastroenteritis and systemic infections in humans. For this bacterium the expression of a type III secretion system (T3SS) and effector proteins encoded in the Salmonella pathogenicity island-1 (SPI-1), is keystone for the virulence of this bacterium. Expression of these is controlled by a regulatory cascade starting with the transcriptional regulators HilD, HilC and RtsA that induce the expression of HilA, which then activates expression of the regulator InvF, a transcriptional regulator of the AraC/XylS family. InvF needs to interact with the chaperone SicA to activate transcription of SPI-1 genes including sicA, sopB, sptP, sopE, sopE2, and STM1239. InvF very likely acts as a classical activator; however, whether InvF interacts with the RNA polymerase alpha subunit RpoA has not been determined. Results from this study confirm the interaction between InvF with SicA and reveal that both proteins interact with the RNAP alpha subunit. Thus, our study further supports that the InvF/SicA complex acts as a classical activator. Additionally, we showed for the first time an interaction between a chaperone of T3SS effectors (SicA) and the RNAP.

Abstract Background The incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD)—the most frequent cause of dementia—is expected to increase as life expectancies rise across the globe. While sex-based differences in AD have previously been described, there remain uncertainties regarding any association between sex and disease-associated molecular mechanisms. Studying sex-specific expression profiles of regulatory factors such as microRNAs (miRNAs) could contribute to more accurate disease diagnosis and treatment. Methods A systematic review identified six studies of microRNA expression in AD patients that incorporated information regarding the biological sex of samples in the Gene Expression Omnibus repository. A differential microRNA expression analysis was performed, considering disease status and patient sex. Subsequently, results were integrated within a meta-analysis methodology, with a functional enrichment of meta-analysis results establishing an association between altered miRNA expression and relevant Gene Ontology terms. Results Meta-analyses of miRNA expression profiles in blood samples revealed the alteration of sixteen miRNAs in female and 22 miRNAs in male AD patients. We discovered nine miRNAs commonly overexpressed in both sexes, suggesting a shared miRNA dysregulation profile. Functional enrichment results based on miRNA profiles revealed sex-based differences in biological processes; most affected processes related to ubiquitination, regulation of different kinase activities, and apoptotic processes in males, but RNA splicing and translation in females. Meta-analyses of miRNA expression profiles in brain samples revealed the alteration of six miRNAs in female and four miRNAs in male AD patients. We observed a single underexpressed miRNA in female and male AD patients (hsa-miR-767-5p); however, the functional enrichment analysis for brain samples did not reveal any specifically affected biological process. Conclusions Sex-specific meta-analyses supported the detection of differentially expressed miRNAs in female and male AD patients, highlighting the relevance of sex-based information in biomedical data. Further studies on miRNA regulation in AD patients should meet the criteria for comparability and standardization of information.

Abstract Background Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders, with the consumption of alcohol considered a leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide. Lipids play a crucial functional role in cell membranes; however, we know little about the role of lipids in extracellular vesicles (EVs) as regulatory molecules and disease biomarkers. Methods We employed a sensitive lipidomic strategy to characterize lipid species from the plasma EVs of AUD patients to evaluate functional roles and enzymatic activity networks to improve the knowledge of lipid metabolism after alcohol consumption. We analyzed plasma EV lipids from AUD females and males and healthy individuals to highlight lipids with differential abundance and biologically interpreted lipidomics data using LINEX2, which evaluates enzymatic dysregulation using an enrichment algorithm. Results Our results show, for the first time, that AUD females exhibited more significant substrate-product changes in lysophosphatidylcholine/phosphatidylcholine lipids and phospholipase/acyltransferase activity, which are potentially linked to cancer progression and neuroinflammation. Conversely, AUD males suffer from dysregulated ceramide and sphingomyelin lipids involving sphingomyelinase, sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase, and sphingomyelin synthase activity, which relates to hepatotoxicity. Notably, the analysis of plasma EVs from AUD females and males demonstrates enrichment of lipid ontology terms associated with “negative intrinsic curvature” and “positive intrinsic curvature”, respectively. Conclusions Our methodological developments support an improved understanding of lipid metabolism and regulatory mechanisms, which contribute to the identification of novel lipid targets and the discovery of sex-specific clinical biomarkers in AUD.

Abstract Background Hyperinflammation, hypercoagulation and endothelial injury are major findings in acute and post-COVID-19. The SARS-CoV-2 S protein has been detected as an isolated element in human tissues reservoirs and is the main product of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. We investigated whether the S protein alone triggers pro-inflammatory and pro-coagulant responses in primary cultures of two cell types deeply affected by SARS-CoV-2, such are monocytes and endothelial cells. Methods In human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and monocytes, the components of NF-κB and the NLRP3 inflammasome system, as well as coagulation regulators, were assessed by qRT-PCR, Western blot, flow cytometry, or indirect immunofluorescence. Results S protein activated NF-κB, promoted pro-inflammatory cytokines release, and triggered the priming and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome system resulting in mature IL-1β formation in both cell types. This was paralleled by enhanced production of coagulation factors such as von Willebrand factor (vWF), factor VIII or tissue factor, that was mediated, at least in part, by IL-1β. Additionally, S protein failed to enhance ADAMTS-13 levels to counteract the pro-coagulant activity of vWF multimers. Monocytes and HUVEC barely expressed angiotensin-converting enzyme-2. Pharmacological approaches and gene silencing showed that TLR4 receptors mediated the effects of S protein in monocytes, but not in HUVEC. Conclusion S protein behaves both as a pro-inflammatory and pro-coagulant stimulus in human monocytes and endothelial cells. Interfering with the receptors or signaling pathways evoked by the S protein may help preventing immune and vascular complications driven by such an isolated viral element. Video Abstract

“Cities on the Move” fue una exposición itinerante de arte comisariada por Hans-Ulrigh Obrist y Hou Hanru dedicada a las emergentes ciudades de Asia. La sexta edición tuvo lugar en 1999 en Bangkok, una ciudad que aún se estaba recuperando de una grave crisis financiera. Por aquel entonces, la capital tailandesa carecía de recintos expositivos aptos para muestras internacionales. Sin embargo, tal inconveniente se convirtió en una oportunidad para exponer las obras de arte en el mismo contexto urbano para el que habían sido concebidas. El acontecimiento tuvo lugar en un contexto no-occidental que se encontraba en el apogeo de su particular encarnación de la Postmodernidad, un período histórico en el que la globalización estaba en una fase incipiente y el ascenso de China era aún una mera promesa. El manifiesto de los comisarios, así como el montaje expositivo de la muestra, estuvieron marcadamente influidos por las visionarias ideas del arquitecto holandés Rem Koolhaas acerca del vertiginoso desarrollo en ciernes de Asia. Este evento no ha recibido hasta la fecha una atención equiparable a la de otras ediciones que contaron con mejores medios y atención por parte7 de la crítica. Casi veinticinco años después, examinamos a través de la lente de la arquitectura las condiciones que acompañaron a la Sexta Edición de “Cities on the Move” en Bangkok, evaluando su legado como un acontecimiento crucial en el arte contemporáneo y los estudios urbanos en Asia. This study addresses the features of the internal structure of the geological layers adjacent to the Polychrome Hall ceiling of the Cave of Altamira (Spain) and their link to the distribution of moisture and geological discontinuities mainly as fractures, joints, bedding planes and detachments, using 3D Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) mapping. In this research, 3D GPR data were collected with 300 MHz, 800 MHz and 1.6 GHz center frequency antennas. The data recorded with these three frequency antennas were combined to further our understanding of the layout of geological discontinuities and how they link to the moisture or water inputs that infiltrate and reach the ceiling surface where the rock art of the Polychrome Hall is located. The same 1 × 1 m2 area was adopted for 3D data acquisition with the three antennas, obtaining 3D isosurface (isoattribute-surface) images of internal distribution of moisture and structural features of the Polychrome Hall ceiling. The results derived from this study reveal significant insights into the overlying karst strata of Polychrome Hall, particularly the interface between the Polychrome Layer and the underlying Dolomitic Layer. The results show moisture patterns associated with geological features such as fractures, joints, detachments of strata and microcatchments, elucidating the mechanisms driving capillary rise and water infiltration coming from higher altitudes. The study primarily identifies areas of increased moisture content, correlating with earlier observations and enhancing our understanding of water infiltration patterns. This underscores the utility of 3D GPR as an essential tool for informing and putting conservation measures into practice. By delineating subsurface structures and moisture dynamics, this research contributes to a deeper analysis of the deterioration processes directly associated with the infiltration water both in this ceiling and in the rest of the Cave of Altamira, providing information to determine its future geological and hydrogeological evolution.

This study investigated the impact of culture medium salinity (5–50 PSU) on the growth and maximum photochemical yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) and the composition of carotenoids, fatty acids, and bioactive substances in three marine microalgae (Chrysochromulina rotalis, Amphidinium carterae, and Heterosigma akashiwo). The microalgae were photoautotrophically cultured in discontinuous mode in a single stage (S1) and a two-stage culture with salt shock (S2). A growth model was developed to link biomass productivity with salinity for each species. C. rotalis achieved a maximum biomass productivity (Pmax) of 15.85 ± 0.32 mg·L−1·day−1 in S1 and 16.12 ± 0.13 mg·L−1·day−1 in S2. The salt shock in S2 notably enhanced carotenoid production, particularly in C. rotalis and H. akashiwo, where fucoxanthin was the main carotenoid, while peridinin dominated in A. carterae. H. akashiwo also exhibited increased fatty acid productivity in S2. Salinity changes affected the proportions of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids in all three species. Additionally, hyposaline conditions boosted the production of haemolytic substances in A. carterae and C. rotalis.

Self-reported occupational exposure was previously associated with COPD in the Spanish population. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between occupational exposure to various chemical and biological agents, COPD, emphysema, and the bronchial wall area, which was determined by lung computed tomography (CT) in 226 individuals with COPD and 300 individuals without COPD. Lifetime occupational exposures were assessed using the ALOHA(+) job exposure matrix, and CT and spirometry were also performed. COPD was associated with high exposure to vapours, gases, dust and fumes (VGDF) (OR 2.25 95% CI 1.19–4.22), biological dust (OR 3.01 95% CI 1.22–7.45), gases/fumes (OR 2.49 95% CI 1.20–5.17) and with exposure to various types of solvents. High exposure to gases/fumes, chlorinated solvents and metals (coefficient 8.65 95% CI 1.21–16.09, 11.91 95%CI 0.46- 23.36, 14.45 95% CI 4.42–24.49, respectively) and low exposure to aromatic solvents (coefficient 8.43 95% CI 1.16–15.70) were associated with a low 15th percentile of lung density indicating emphysema. We conclude that occupational exposure to several specific agents is associated with COPD and emphysema in the Spanish population.

The cheese industry produces substantial amounts of raw cheese whey wastewater (RW), which requires effective treatment prior to environmental disposal. This study presents an innovative sequential batch system that combines macrophyte and microalgal cultivation for RW remediation. The efficacy of Lemna minor MO23 in first-line photobioreactors (PBR-1) and Chlorella sp. MC18 (CH) or Scenedesmus sp. MJ23-R (SC) in second-line photobioreactors (PBR-2) for pollutant removal was evaluated. The nutrient removal capacity of L. minor, CH, and SC was assessed at optimal tolerance concentrations, alongside nutrient recovery from treated RW (TRW) by PBR-1 for microalgae biomass production. The results demonstrate that all three species effectively purified the cheese whey wastewater. L. minor efficiently removed COD, nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate from RW, producing TRW effluent suitable for microalgal growth. CH and SC further purified TRW, enhancing biomass production. CH outperformed SC with a 4.79% higher maximum specific growth rate and 20.95% higher biomass yield. Biochemical analyses revealed the potential of CH and SC biomass for applications such as biofuels and aquaculture. After treatment, the physicochemical parameters of the effluent were within the regulatory limits. This demonstrates that the PBR-1 and PBR-2 series-coupled system effectively purifies and recovers dairy effluents while complying with discharge standards.

Introducción: El petróleo crudo cubano tiene un alto contenido de cenizas, azufre, asfaltenos y una alta viscosidad, entre otros, que, al someterse al proceso de combustión, trae como consecuencia efectos corrosivos en las zonas de transferencia de calor, disminuyendo la vida útil de los equipos. Objetivo: Diseñar un procedimiento para la introducción de aditivos, que permitan aumentar la vida útil de los equipos a partir de la mejora de la eficiencia energética del proceso de combustión. Materiales y Métodos: Se parte del análisis de la composición y las propiedades físico-químicas del petróleo crudo cubano y la caracterización del aditivo. Se evalúa la efectividad del aditivo a escala de laboratorio, piloto e industrial. Se ajustan los parámetros de la combustión y se analiza la eficiencia del generador de vapor, con el objetivo de establecer la dosificación requerida. Se realiza el análisis beneficio/costo correspondiente. Por último, el procedimiento tiene concebido la comparación con otro aditivo en caso de que exista. Resultados y Discusión: El procedimiento incluye la determinación de la composición química y las propiedades físico-químicas del petróleo crudo utilizado, el efecto del aditivo y la eficiencia de la combustión. Contempla, no solo el análisis de la utilización de un aditivo en uso, si no también, la introducción de uno nuevo y la comparación con éste. Puede ser implementado en cualquier industria que emplee el petróleo crudo como combustible en el proceso de combustión. Conclusiones: El procedimiento brinda las indicaciones metodológicas para la introducción de aditivos que permitan la mejora del proceso de combustión del generador de vapor.

Our previous studies have reported that activation of the NLRP3 (NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3)-inflammasome complex in ethanol-treated astrocytes and chronic alcohol-fed mice could be associated with neuroinflammation and brain damage. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) have been shown to restore the neuroinflammatory response, along with myelin and synaptic structural alterations in the prefrontal cortex, and alleviate cognitive and memory dysfunctions induced by binge-like ethanol treatment in adolescent mice. Considering the therapeutic role of the molecules contained in mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles, the present study analyzed whether the administration of mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles isolated from adipose tissue, which inhibited the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, was capable of reducing hippocampal neuroinflammation in adolescent mice treated with binge drinking. We demonstrated that the administration of mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles ameliorated the activation of the hippocampal NLRP3 inflammasome complex and other NLRs inflammasomes (e.g., pyrin domain-containing 1, caspase recruitment domain-containing 4, and absent in melanoma 2, as well as the alterations in inflammatory genes (interleukin-1β, interleukin-18, inducible nitric oxide synthase, nuclear factor-kappa B, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and C–X3–C motif chemokine ligand 1) and miRNAs (miR-21a-5p, miR-146a-5p, and miR-141-5p) induced by binge-like ethanol treatment in adolescent mice. Bioinformatic analysis further revealed the involvement of miR-21a-5p and miR-146a-5p with inflammatory target genes and NOD-like receptor signaling pathways. Taken together, these findings provide novel evidence of the therapeutic potential of MSC-derived EVs to ameliorate the hippocampal neuroinflammatory response associated with NLRP3 inflammasome activation induced by binge drinking in adolescence.

Abstract Cell shape is genetically inherited by all forms of life. Some unicellular microbes increase niche adaptation altering shape whereas most show invariant morphology. A universal system of peptidoglycan synthases guided by cytoskeletal scaffolds defines bacterial shape. In rod-shaped bacteria, this system consists of two supramolecular complexes, the elongasome and divisome, which insert cell wall material along major and minor axes. Microbes with invariant shape are thought to use a single morphogenetic system irrespective of the occupied niche. Here, we provide evidence for two elongasomes that generate (rod) shape in the same bacterium. This phenomenon was unveiled in Salmonella, a pathogen that switches between extra- and intracellular lifestyles. The two elongasomes can be purified independently, respond to different environmental cues, and are directed by distinct peptidoglycan synthases: the canonical PBP2 and the pathogen-specific homologue PBP2SAL. The PBP2-elongasome responds to neutral pH whereas that directed by PBP2SAL assembles in acidic conditions. Moreover, the PBP2SAL-elongasome moves at a lower speed. Besides Salmonella, other human, animal, and plant pathogens encode alternative PBPs with predicted morphogenetic functions. Therefore, contrasting the view of morphological plasticity facilitating niche adaptation, some pathogens may have acquired alternative systems to preserve their shape in the host.

Background: This work aims to establish the relationship between depression and epidemiological or imaging variables, frailty, and cognitive status in patients who suffered hospital admission for COVID-19. Methods: A longitudinal observational study investigated 72 patients admitted for COVID-19 to a hospital in Spain. Patients were evaluated at discharge and six months later. Clinical, analytical, and imaging variables were collected. A neurocognitive, nutritional, and frailty (FRAIL scale) assessment of the included patients was carried out. The risk of depression was considered for a result above 5 points on the PHQ-9 scale. Results: The variables that were significantly related to the risk of depression 6 months after admission for COVID-19 were frailty (p = 0.006 for pre-frail and p = 0.001 for frail), small-vessel vascular disease in imaging tests (p = 0.033), vitamin D level (p = 0.006), and taking antidepressants (p = 0.011). Factors that were negatively associated with the presence of depression 6 months after discharge were a higher score on the CAMCOG cognitive scale (p = 0.041) and older age (p = 0.006). Conclusions: Frailty worsened the score on the PHQ-9 depression scale in patients who required hospital admission for SARS-CoV-2 infection. It is important to implement prevention measures both for frailty and depression in these patients.

Characterizing the microstructures of steel subjected to heat treatments is crucial in the metallurgical industry for understanding and controlling their mechanical properties. In this study, we present a novel approach for generating images of steel microstructures that mimic those obtained with optical microscopy, using the deep learning technique of generative adversarial networks (GAN). The experiments were conducted using different hyperparameter configurations, evaluating the effect of these variations on the quality and fidelity of the generated images. The obtained results show that the images generated by artificial intelligence achieved a resolution of 512 × 512 pixels and closely resemble real microstructures observed through conventional microscopy techniques. A precise visual representation of the main microconstituents, such as pearlite and ferrite in annealed steels, was achieved. However, the performance of GANs in generating images of quenched steels with martensitic microstructures was less satisfactory, with the synthetic images not fully replicating the complex, needle-like features characteristic of martensite. This approach offers a promising tool for generating steel microstructure images, facilitating the visualization and analysis of metallurgical samples with high fidelity and efficiency.

The conservation of Cultural Heritage in cave environments, especially those hosting cave art, requires comprehensive conservation strategies to mitigate degradation risks derived from climatic influences and human activities. This study, focused on the Polychrome Hall of the Cave of Altamira, highlights the importance of integrating remote sensing methodologies to carry out effective conservation actions. By coupling a georeferenced Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) with a 1.6 GHz central-frequency antenna along with photogrammetry, we conducted non-invasive and high-resolution 3D studies to map preferential moisture pathways from the surface of the ceiling to the first 50 cm internally of the limestone structure. In parallel, we monitored the dynamics of surface water on the Ceiling and its correlation with pigment and other substance migrations. By standardizing our methodology, we aim to increase knowledge about the dynamics of infiltration water, which will enhance our understanding of the deterioration processes affecting cave paintings related to infiltration water. This will enable us to improve conservation strategies, suggesting possible indirect measures to reverse active deterioration processes. Integrating remote sensing techniques with geospatial analysis will aid in the validation and calibration of collected data, allowing for stronger interpretations of subsurface structures and conditions. All of this puts us in a position to contribute to the development of effective conservation methodologies, reduce alteration risks, and promote sustainable development practices, thus emphasizing the importance of remote sensing in safeguarding Cultural Heritage.

The primary population of small ruminants in Spain is concentrated in the southern region, a critical area for the country’s livestock production. Indirect economic losses can occur when this livestock is affected by gastrointestinal parasites. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of these parasites in small ruminant herds (159 sheep and 39 goats) through coprological analyses and conducted a survey on farmers’ management practices related to gastrointestinal parasite control. The survey results revealed some important aspects: monitoring through coprological analyses is not a common practice; veterinarians are not typically involved in deworming plans; anthelmintic treatment in adults is often applied twice a year in sheep and once a year in goats; and finally, drug rotation was higher in sheep farms. Coprological analyses showed Eimeria spp. as the most common parasitic infection, followed by Strongyles infection. Other parasites like Moniezia spp., Trichuris spp., and D. dendriticum were less important, although their prevalence was higher in sheep than goats. This constitutes the first report on the epidemiological status of gastrointestinal parasites in small ruminants in southern Spain. Based on the survey findings, the introduction of certain management measures on farms could potentially mitigate parasite infections.

Abstract Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is a chronic hereditary motor and sensory polyneuropathy targeting Schwann cells and/or motor neurons. Its multifactorial and polygenic origin portrays a complex clinical phenotype of the disease with a wide range of genetic inheritance patterns. The disease-associated gene GDAP1 encodes for a mitochondrial outer membrane protein. Mouse and insect models with mutations in Gdap1 have reproduced several traits of the human disease. However, the precise function in the cell types affected by the disease remains unknown. Here, we use induced-pluripotent stem cells derived from a Gdap1 knockout mouse model to better understand the molecular and cellular phenotypes of the disease caused by the loss-of-function of this gene. Gdap1-null motor neurons display a fragile cell phenotype prone to early degeneration showing (1) altered mitochondrial morphology, with an increase in the fragmentation of these organelles, (2) activation of autophagy and mitophagy, (3) abnormal metabolism, characterized by a downregulation of Hexokinase 2 and ATP5b proteins, (4) increased reactive oxygen species and elevated mitochondrial membrane potential, and (5) increased innate immune response and p38 MAP kinase activation. Our data reveals the existence of an underlying Redox-inflammatory axis fueled by altered mitochondrial metabolism in the absence of Gdap1. As this biochemical axis encompasses a wide variety of druggable targets, our results may have implications for developing therapies using combinatorial pharmacological approaches and improving therefore human welfare. A Redox-immune axis underlying motor neuron degeneration caused by the absence of Gdap1. Our results show that Gdap1 –/– motor neurons have a fragile cellular phenotype that is prone to degeneration. Gdap1 –/– iPSCs differentiated into motor neurons showed an altered metabolic state: decreased glycolysis and increased OXPHOS. These alterations may lead to hyperpolarization of mitochondria and increased ROS levels. Excessive amounts of ROS might be the cause of increased mitophagy, p38 activation and inflammation as a cellular response to oxidative stress. The p38 MAPK pathway and the immune response may, in turn, have feedback mechanisms, leading to the induction of apoptosis and senescence, respectively. Background Intermittent hypoxaemia and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) have been linked to lung cancer through as yet unidentified pathophysiological mechanisms. This study evaluates the effect of OSA on serum levels of biomarkers of immunosurveillance, lymphangiogenesis and intrinsic tumour cell aggressiveness in high-risk individuals screened for lung cancer and patients with established lung cancer. Methods Serum samples from individuals participating in a lung cancer screening cohort (SAILS study) or with newly diagnosed lung cancer (SAIL study) were analysed. All patients underwent home sleep apnoea testing. Soluble levels of programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1), cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4, midkine (MDK), paraspeckle component-1 (PSPC1), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), SMAD3, matrix metalloproteinase-2 and co-stimulus receptor of the tumour necrosis factor family of receptors (CD137) were determined by ELISA. Results The presence of moderate-to-severe OSA was associated with increased levels of PSPC1, MDK, PD-L1 and PD-1 in screened individuals, and with higher values of PSPC1, TGF-β1, PD-L1 and PD-1 in patients with established lung cancer. The findings correlated with nocturnal intermittent hypoxaemia indices. Conclusion Moderate-to-severe OSA is associated with increased expression of serum biomarkers of immune evasion, lymphangiogenesis and tumour cell aggressiveness in high-risk individuals screened for lung cancer and those with established disease.

Transdiagnostic group cognitive behavioural therapy (TD-GCBT) is more effective in improving symptoms and severity of emotional disorders (EDs) than treatment as usual (TAU; usually pharmacological treatment). However, there is little research that has examined the effects of these treatments on specific symptoms. This study used Network Intervention Analysis (NIA) to investigate the direct and differential effects of TD-GCBT + TAU and TAU on specific symptoms of anxiety and depression. Data are from a multicentre randomised clinical trial (N = 1061) comparing TD-GCBT + TAU versus TAU alone for EDs. The networks included items from the PHQ-9 (depression) and GAD-7 (anxiety) questionnaire and mixed graphical models were estimated at pre-treatment, post-treatment and 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-up. Results revealed that TD-GCBT + TAU was associated with direct effects, mainly on several anxiety symptoms and depressed mood after treatment. New direct effects on other depressive symptoms emerged during the follow-up period promoted by TD-GCBT compared to TAU. Our results suggest that the improvement of anxiety symptoms after treatment might precipitate a wave of changes that favour a decrease in depressive symptomatology. NIA is a methodology that can provide fine-grained insight into the likely pathways through which treatments exert their effects.

El fenómeno de la desinformación, por su impacto en el tratamiento y consumo de información, sigue siendo objeto de investigaciones científicas desde muy distintas perspectivas comunicacionales. Esta investigación aborda el fenómeno de la desinformación desde una perspectiva correlacional, centrándose en la intersección de la desinformación, el populismo y los eneagramas. Su objetivo es comprender cómo los eneatipos y las inclinaciones emocionales pueden influir en la percepción y gestión de las noticias falsas, y su vinculación con el concepto de populismo. Este enfoque holístico proporciona una perspectiva valiosa para abordar los desafíos de la desinformación y el populismo en el contexto de la educación superior, sentando las bases para futuras investigaciones en esta temática compleja e interconectada.

En 2014 grafitis con pictogramas y diagramas de aspecto técnico comenzaron a aparecer en las calles de Bangkok, llamando la atención por la meticulosidad con la que se dibujaban a pesar de la ausencia aparente de significado. El autor resultó ser una persona sintecho llamada Sametr Pattanapornchai que adolecía de algún trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo y que alegaba que sus jeroglíficos tenían el propósito de esclarecer las calamidades que habían atenazado su vida y la de su familia. Extendiéndose por las calles y el mobiliario urbano de la capital tailandesa, sus dibujos viraron populares hasta el punto de ser presentados, junto a los más reconocidos artistas internacionales, en la Bienal de Arte de Bangkok de 2020. Su condición psicológica y su talento innato le han permitido encontrar un lugar para la expresión de su individualidad entre la especulación inmobiliaria, los espacios-basura generados por las grandes infraestructuras y la homogeneidad de la globalización. La obra de Sametr ha demostrado ser una afinada caracterización de los flujos urbanos e intersticios marginalizados de la contemporaneidad, donde prácticas sincréticas se superponen a diario sobre la vida moderna.

El área de los “servicios intensivos en conocimiento” es la más dinámica en el sector, por su capacidad de innovación, generación de empleo y crecimiento. Son fuentes de ganancias de productividad, derramas de conocimiento y generadores de innovaciones propias en las regiones. El objetivo del estudio es analizar el sector de servicios intensivos en conocimiento en el noreste de México, Tamaulipas durante el periodo 2004-2019, desde la perspectiva de los Indices de Hirschman-Rasmussen y multiplicadores de producción. Como resultado se obtuvieron clasificaciones de los servicios intensivos en conocimiento en dos aglomeraciones, los clústeres SPAVA I, y SPAVA II. Se concluye que los servicios especializados, no impactan significamente en la demanda final. Sólo el subsector de finanzas, seguros y pensiones muestra una relativa capacidad de arrastre.

Abstract Background Lipids represent essential components of extracellular vesicles (EVs), playing structural and regulatory functions during EV biogenesis, release, targeting, and cell uptake. Importantly, lipidic dysregulation has been linked to several disorders, including metabolic syndrome, inflammation, and neurological dysfunction. Our recent results demonstrated the involvement of plasma EV microRNAs as possible amplifiers and biomarkers of neuroinflammation and brain damage induced by ethanol intoxication during adolescence. Considering the possible role of plasma EV lipids as regulatory molecules and biomarkers, we evaluated how acute ethanol intoxication differentially affected the lipid composition of plasma EVs in male and female adolescents and explored the participation of the immune response. Methods Plasma EVs were extracted from humans and wild-type (WT) and Toll-like receptor 4 deficient (TLR4-KO) mice. Preprocessing and exploratory analyses were conducted after the extraction of EV lipids and data acquisition by mass spectrometry. Comparisons between ethanol-intoxicated and control human female and male individuals and ethanol-treated and untreated WT and TLR4-KO female and male mice were used to analyze the differential abundance of lipids. Annotation of lipids into their corresponding classes and a lipid set enrichment analysis were carried out to evaluate biological functions. Results We demonstrated, for the first time, that acute ethanol intoxication induced a higher enrichment of distinct plasma EV lipid species in human female adolescents than in males. We observed a higher content of the PA, LPC, unsaturated FA, and FAHFA lipid classes in females, whereas males showed enrichment in PI. These lipid classes participate in the formation, release, and uptake of EVs and the activation of the immune response. Moreover, we observed changes in EV lipid composition between ethanol-treated WT and TLR4-KO mice (e.g., enrichment of glycerophosphoinositols in ethanol-treated WT males), and the sex-based differences in lipid abundance are more notable in WT mice than in TLR4-KO mice. All data and results generated have been made openly available on a web-based platform ( http://bioinfo.cipf.es/sal ). Conclusions Our results suggest that binge ethanol drinking in human female adolescents leads to a higher content of plasma EV lipid species associated with EV biogenesis and the propagation of neuroinflammatory responses than in males. In addition, we discovered greater differences in lipid abundance between sexes in WT mice compared to TLR4-KO mice. Our findings also support the potential use of EV-enriched lipids as biomarkers of ethanol-induced neuroinflammation during adolescence.

Abstract We analyze the topology, dispersion, and optical selection rules of bulk Wannier excitons in nanosheets of Bi2Se3, a topological insulator in the family of the bismuth chalcogenides. Our main finding is that excitons also inherit the topology of the electronic bands, quantified by the skyrmion winding numbers of the constituent electron and hole pseudospins as a function of the total exciton momentum. The excitonic bands are found to be strongly indirect due to the band inversion of the underlying single-particle model. At zero total momentum, we predict that the s-wave and d-wave states of two exciton families are selectively bright under left- or right-circularly polarized light. We furthermore show that every s-wave exciton state consists of a quartet with a degenerate and quadratically dispersing nonchiral doublet, and a chiral doublet with one linearly dispersing mode as in transition metal dichalcogenides. Finally, we discuss the potential existence of topological edge states of chiral excitons arising from the bulk-boundary correspondence.

Al-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) films were deposited on glass substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering using a sintered target of nanoparticles synthesized by sol–gel. The films were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, the four-point probe method for resistivity, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and photoluminescence. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed a hexagonal structure corresponding to the wurtzite phase for all the films, nanoparticles, and sintered targets. The films deposited by sputtering showed a highly preferred orientation to the (002) plane. These films were compared structurally and electrically to those deposited by the sol–gel method. Photoluminescence spectra show a decrease in intensity due to the reduction of defects by the incorporation of Al as dopant in the ZnO films deposited by the both methods (sol–gel and sputtering). The Al-doped ZnO films deposited by sputtering reached resistivity of 0.1 Ω cm and those deposited by sol–gel reached a resistivity of 1.24 Ω cm. The physical properties of these films show potential for application in devices like sensors and biosensors. Resumen: Se depositaron películas de óxido de zinc (ZnO) dopadas con aluminio (Al) sobre sustratos de vidrio mediante erosión catódica de radiofrecuencia usando un blanco sinterizado de nanopartículas sintetizadas por sol-gel. Las películas fueron caracterizadas usando difracción de rayos-X, microscopía electrónica de barrido, método de cuatro puntas para la resistividad, espectroscopía de energía dispersiva de rayos-X y fotoluminiscencia. Los patrones de difracción de rayos-X mostraron una estructura hexagonal correspondiente a la fase wurtzita para todas las películas, nanopartículas y blancos sinterizados. Las películas depositadas por erosión catódica mostraron una alta orientación preferencial al plano (002). Estas películas fueron comparadas con las depositadas por el método sol-gel, estructural y eléctricamente. Los espectros de fotoluminiscencia muestran una reducción en intensidad debido a la reducción de defectos por la incorporación de Al como dopante en las películas depositadas por ambos métodos (sol-gel y sputtering). Las películas de ZnO dopadas con Al depositadas por erosión catódica alcanzaron resistividades de 0,1 Ω cm y 1,24 Ω cm para las películas de ZnO dopadas con Al depositadas por sol-gel. Las propiedades físicas de estas películas muestran potencial para la aplicación en dispositivos como sensores o biosensores.

El presente texto recoge una presentación e introducción reflexiva sobre el contenido de este número 24 de "Anales de la Universidad de Alicante. Historia Medieval", con especial atención a la temática que preside el dossier monográfico. Desde una aproximación global y balance de la temática tratada, se pasa a posteriori a presentar y realizar una descripción general de los diferentes trabajos que engloban el mismo y las cuestiones analizadas por los distintos autores.

Submerged aquatic vegetation plays a fundamental role as a habitat for the biodiversity of marine species. To carry out the research and monitoring of submerged aquatic vegetation more efficiently and accurately, it is important to use advanced technologies such as underwater robots. However, when conducting underwater missions to capture photographs and videos near submerged aquatic vegetation meadows, algae can become entangled in the propellers and cause vehicle failure. In this context, a neurobiologically inspired control architecture is proposed for the control of unmanned underwater vehicles with redundant thrusters. The proposed control architecture learns to control the underwater robot in a non-stationary environment and combines the associative learning method and vector associative map learning to generate transformations between the spatial and velocity coordinates in the robot actuator. The experimental results obtained show that the proposed control architecture exhibits notable resilience capabilities while maintaining its operation in the face of thruster failures. In the discussion of the results obtained, the importance of the proposed control architecture is highlighted in the context of the monitoring and conservation of underwater vegetation meadows. Its resilience, robustness, and adaptability capabilities make it an effective tool to face challenges and meet mission objectives in such critical environments.

This paper highlights the fundamental role of integrating different geomatics and geophysical imaging technologies in understanding and preserving cultural heritage, with a focus on the Pavilion of Charles V in Seville (Spain). Using a terrestrial laser scanner, global navigation satellite system, and ground-penetrating radar, we constructed a building information modelling (BIM) system to derive comprehensive decision-making models to preserve this historical asset. These models enable the generation of virtual reconstructions, encompassing not only the building but also its subsurface, distributable as augmented reality or virtual reality online. By leveraging these technologies, the research investigates complex details of the pavilion, capturing its current structure and revealing insights into past soil compositions and potential subsurface structures. This detailed analysis empowers stakeholders to make informed decisions about conservation and management. Furthermore, transparent data sharing fosters collaboration, advancing collective understanding and practices in heritage preservation.

This article presents a study on the neurobiological control of voluntary movements for anthropomorphic robotic systems. A corticospinal neural network model has been developed to control joint trajectories in multi-fingered robotic hands. The proposed neural network simulates cortical and spinal areas, as well as the connectivity between them, during the execution of voluntary movements similar to those performed by humans or monkeys. Furthermore, this neural connection allows for the interpretation of functional roles in the motor areas of the brain. The proposed neural control system is tested on the fingers of a robotic hand, which is driven by agonist–antagonist tendons and actuators designed to accurately emulate complex muscular functionality. The experimental results show that the corticospinal controller produces key properties of biological movement control, such as bell-shaped asymmetric velocity profiles and the ability to compensate for disturbances. Movements are dynamically compensated for through sensory feedback. Based on the experimental results, it is concluded that the proposed biologically inspired adaptive neural control system is robust, reliable, and adaptable to robotic platforms with diverse biomechanics and degrees of freedom. The corticospinal network successfully integrates biological concepts with engineering control theory for the generation of functional movement. This research significantly contributes to improving our understanding of neuromotor control in both animals and humans, thus paving the way towards a new frontier in the field of neurobiological control of anthropomorphic robotic systems.

The utilization of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for semantic segmentation has proven to be successful in various applications, such as autonomous vehicle environment analysis, medical imaging, and satellite imagery. In this study, we investigate the application of different segmentation networks, including Deeplabv3+, U-Net, and SegNet, each recognized for their effectiveness in semantic segmentation tasks. Additionally, in the case of Deeplabv3+, we leverage the use of pre-trained ResNet50, ResNet18 and MobileNetv2 as feature extractors for a comprehensive analysis of steel microstructures. Our specific focus is on distinguishing perlite and ferrite phases in micrographs of low-carbon steel specimens subjected to annealing heat treatment. The micrographs obtained using an optical microscope are manually segmented. Preprocessing techniques are then applied to create a dataset for building a supervised learning model. In the results section, we discuss in detail the performance of the obtained models and the metrics used. The models achieve a remarkable 95% to 98% accuracy in correctly labeling pixels for each phase. This underscores the effectiveness of our approach in differentiating perlite and ferrite phases within steel microstructures.

Background Population distribution of reduced diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) in smokers and main consequences are not properly recognised. The objectives of this study were to describe the prevalence of reduced DLCO in a population-based sample of current and former smoker subjects without airflow limitation and to describe its morphological, functional and clinical implications.Methods A sample of 405 subjects aged 40 years or older with postbronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity (FVC) >0.70 was obtained from a random population-based sample of 9092 subjects evaluated in the EPISCAN II study. Baseline evaluation included clinical questionnaires, exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) measurement, spirometry, DLCO determination, 6 min walk test, routine blood analysis and low-dose CT scan with evaluation of lung density and airway wall thickness.Results In never, former and current smokers, prevalence of reduced DLCO was 6.7%, 14.4% and 26.7%, respectively. IntroductionAlthough higher incidence of cancer represents a major burden for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients, the molecular pathways driving this association are not completely understood. Recently, the adhesion receptor P-selectin glycoprotein-1 (PSGL 1) has been identified as a novel immune checkpoint, which are recognized major hallmarks in several types of cancer and have revolutionized cancer therapy.MethodsThe expression of PSGL-1 and its ligands VISTA and SIGLEC-5 was assessed in the leucocytes of OSA patients and control subjects exploring the role of intermittent hypoxia (IH) using in vitro models. In addition, PSGL-1 impact on T-cells function was evaluated by ex vivo models.ResultsData showed PSGL-1 expression is upregulated in the T-lymphocytes from patients with severe OSA, indicating a relevant role of hypoxemia mediated by intermittent hypoxia. Besides, results suggest an inhibitory role of PSGL-1 on T-cell proliferation capacity. Finally, the expression of SIGLEC-5 but not VISTA was increased in monocytes from OSA patients, suggesting a regulatory role of intermittent hypoxia.DiscussionIn conclusion, PSGL-1 might constitute an additional immune checkpoint leading to T-cell dysfunction in OSA patients, contributing to the disruption of immune surveillance, which might provide biological plausibility to the higher incidence and aggressiveness of several tumors in these patients.

Introduction: The professional dedicated to respiratory health has an exemplary role in tobacco control, promoting smoking cessation in their patients. However, multiple circumstances cause a low implementation. Therefore, the objective of the study is to identify the consumption, knowledge and perception of tobacco and its emerging products in a representative sample of professionals involved in the treatment of respiratory patients integrated into the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR). Material and methods: Descriptive analysis of a structured online interview addressed to 5340 SEPAR members. Results: In a sample of 802 respondents, more than 33% have smoked at some time and 6.6% continue to smoke. More than 66% consider smoking as a chronic disease. More than 90% consider their role model important and advise their patients to quit smoking, but less than half carry out a smoking intervention. Only 35% of them believe that the ban on smoking in health centers is always complied. More than 75% do not consider nicotine delivery devices an option for smoking cessation or harm reduction. 22% are unaware of water pipes and 29% of heated tobacco. Conclusions: Professionals specialized in respiratory diseases are highly sensitized to smoking. Despite this, there are still weak points such as the insufficient implementation of smoking cessation interventions or the scant training in smoking and in new emerging products. Resumen: Introducción: El profesional dedicado a la salud respiratoria tiene un papel ejemplar en el control del tabaquismo, promoviendo el abandono del hábito tabáquico en sus pacientes. Sin embargo, múltiples circunstancias provocan una baja implementación. Por tanto, el objetivo del estudio es identificar el consumo, el conocimiento y la percepción sobre el tabaco y sus productos emergentes en una muestra representativa de profesionales implicados en el tratamiento de pacientes respiratorios integrados en la Sociedad Española de Neumología y Cirugía Torácica (SEPAR). Material y métodos: Análisis descriptivo de una entrevista estructurada en línea dirigida a 5.340 miembros de la SEPAR. Resultados: En una muestra de 802 encuestados, más del 33% ha fumado alguna vez y el 6.6% sigue fumando. Más del 66% considera el tabaquismo como una enfermedad crónica. Más del 90% considera importante su modelo a seguir y aconseja a sus pacientes que dejen de fumar, pero menos de la mitad realiza una intervención para dejar de fumar. Solo el 35% de ellos cree que la prohibición de fumar en los centros de salud se cumple siempre. Más del 75% no considera que los dispositivos de suministro de nicotina sean una opción para dejar de fumar o reducir los daños. El 22% desconoce las pipas de agua y el 29% el tabaco calentado. Conclusiones: Los profesionales especialistas en enfermedades respiratorias están altamente sensibilizados al tabaquismo. A pesar de ello, aún existen puntos débiles como la insuficiente implantación de intervenciones para dejar de fumar o la escasa formación en tabaquismo y en nuevos productos emergentes.

Abstract Introduction There are no published studies assessing the evolution of combined determination of the lung diffusing capacity for both nitric oxide and carbon monoxide (DLNO and DLCO) 12 months after the discharge of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Methods Prospective cohort study which included patients who were assessed both 3 and 12 months after an episode of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. Their clinical status, health condition, lung function testings (LFTs) results (spirometry, DLNO-DLCO analysis, and six-minute walk test), and chest X-ray/computed tomography scan images were compared. Results 194 patients, age 62 years (P25–75, 51.5–71), 59% men, completed the study. 17% required admission to the intensive care unit. An improvement in the patients’ exercise tolerance, the extent of the areas of ground-glass opacity, and the LFTs between 3 and 12 months following their hospital discharge were found, but without a decrease in their degree of dyspnea or their self-perceived health condition. DLNO was the most significantly altered parameter at 12 months (19.3%). The improvement in DLNO-DLCO mainly occurred at the expense of the recovery of alveolar units and their vascular component, with the membrane factor only improving in patients with more severe infections. Conclusions The combined measurement of DLNO-DLCO is the most sensitive LFT for the detection of the long-term sequelae of COVID-19 pneumonia and it explain better their pathophysiology.
