Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text., Background and Purpose: Chronic kidney disease with reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate or elevated albuminuria increases risk for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. This study assessed the effects of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) on stroke and atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/AFL) from CREDENCE (Canagliflozin and Renal Events in Diabetes With Established Nephropathy Clinical Evaluation) and a meta-analysis of large cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) of SGLT2i in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: CREDENCE randomized 4401 participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease to canagliflozin or placebo. Post hoc, we estimated effects on fatal or nonfatal stroke, stroke subtypes, and intermediate markers of stroke risk including AF/AFL. Stroke and AF/AFL data from 3 other completed large CVOTs and CREDENCE were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Results: In CREDENCE, 142 participants experienced a stroke during follow-up (10.9/1000 patient-years with canagliflozin, 14.2/1000 patient-years with placebo; hazard ratio [HR], 0.77 [95% CI, 0.55–1.08]). Effects by stroke subtypes were: ischemic (HR, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.61–1.28]; n=111), hemorrhagic (HR, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.19–1.32]; n=18), and undetermined (HR, 0.54 [95% CI, 0.20–1.46]; n=17). There was no clear effect on AF/AFL (HR, 0.76 [95% CI, 0.53–1.10]; n=115). The overall effects in the 4 CVOTs combined were: total stroke (HRpooled, 0.96 [95% CI, 0.82–1.12]), ischemic stroke (HRpooled, 1.01 [95% CI, 0.89–1.14]), hemorrhagic stroke (HRpooled, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.30–0.83]), undetermined stroke (HRpooled, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.49–1.51]), and AF/AFL (HRpooled, 0.81 [95% CI, 0.71–0.93]). Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Chronic kidney disease with reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate or elevated albuminuria increases risk for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. This study assessed the effects of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) on stroke and atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/AFL) from CREDENCE (Canagliflozin and Renal Events in Diabetes With Established Nephropathy Clinical Evaluation) and a meta-Analysis of large cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) of SGLT2i in type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: CREDENCE randomized 4401 participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease to canagliflozin or placebo. Post hoc, we estimated effects on fatal or nonfatal stroke, stroke subtypes, and intermediate markers of stroke risk including AF/AFL. Stroke and AF/AFL data from 3 other completed large CVOTs and CREDENCE were pooled using random-effects meta-Analysis. RESULTS: In CREDENCE, 142 participants experienced a stroke during follow-up (10.9/1000 patient-years with canagliflozin, 14.2/1000 patient-years with placebo; hazard ratio [HR], 0.77 [95% CI, 0.55-1.08]). Effects by stroke subtypes were: ischemic (HR, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.61-1.28]; n=111), hemorrhagic (HR, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.19-1.32]; n=18), and undetermined (HR, 0.54 [95% CI, 0.20-1.46]; n=17). There was no clear effect on AF/AFL (HR, 0.76 [95% CI, 0.53-1.10]; n=115). The overall effects in the 4 CVOTs combined were: Total stroke (HRpooled, 0.96 [95% CI, 0.82-1.12]), ischemic stroke (HRpooled, 1.01 [95% CI, 0.89-1.14]), hemorrhagic stroke (HRpooled, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.30-0.83]), undetermined stroke (HRpooled, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.49-1.51]), and AF/AFL (HRpooled, 0.81 [95% CI, 0.71-0.93]). There was evidence that SGLT2i effects on total stroke varied by baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (P=0.01), with protection in the lowest estimated glomerular filtration rate (45 mL/min/1.73 m2]) subgroup (HRpooled, 0.50 [95% CI, 0.31-0.79]). Abstract

Americabaetis mecistognathus Salles & Raimundi, sp. nov. (Figs. 1a, 2–13, 27) Diagnoses. Nymphs: 1) frontal keel absent (Fig. 2); 2) lingua broadly pointed apically (Fig. 6); 3) glossa 0.6x length of paraglossa (Fig. 8); 4) apex of paraglossa with rows of pectinate setae (Fig. 8); 5) segment II of labial palp with a moderate distomedial projection (Fig. 8); 6) posterior margin of abdominal terga with rounded spines (Fig. 11); 7) mouthparts unusually elongate (Fig. 2). Adults: unknown. Description. Nymph. Length of body: 4.0 mm; cerci, terminal filament, and antennae: broken-off in mature nymphs. Head. Coloration brown. Antenna light brown, scape and pedicel darker. Lateral branch of epicranial suture curved. Frontal keel absent. Antenna with scape and pedicel subcilindrical. Labrum (Fig. 3). Rectangular, longer than broad; length about 1.4x maximum width. Distal margin with medial emargination and small process; dorsally with few short, fine, simple setae scattered over surface. Dorsolateral arc of setae composed of 3 + 2 + 1 long, spine-like setae. Submarginal dorsal row of setae absent. Antero-lateral margin with long, pectinate setae. Ventrally with submarginal row of setae composed of row of short, bifid setae. Ventral surface with short, spine-like setae near anterolateral margin. Left mandible (Fig. 4). Incisors fused; inner and outer set of incisors respectively with 4 + 3 denticles; prostheca robust, apically denticulate and with comb-shape structure at apex. Margin between prostheca and mola straight, with crenulations on distal half, tuft of setae present. Subtriangular process wide, above level of area between prostheca and mola. Denticles of mola not constricted. Tuft of setae at apex of mola present, reduced to a single setae. Right mandible (Fig. 5). Incisors fused; inner and outer set of incisors respectively with 4 + 4 denticles. Prostheca robust, apically denticulate. Margin between prostheca and mola straight; tuft of setae present. Tuft of spine-like setae at base of mola present. Denticles of mola not constricted. Tuft of setae at apex of mola present, reduced to a single setae. Hypopharynx (Fig. 6). Lingua longer than superlingua; apex of lingua broadly acute. Superlingua not expanded; short, fine, simple setae scattered over lateral and distal margin. Maxilla (Fig. 7). Crown of galea-lacinia with 4 denticles; inner dorsal row of setae with 3 denti-setae. Medial protuberance of galea with 4 + 1 simple setae. Maxillary palp 3/4 length of galea-lacinia, with long, fine, simple setae scattered over surface. Palp segment II 1.2x length of segment I. Labium (Fig. 8). Glossa basally broad, narrowing apically and shorter than paraglossa; 0.6x length of paraglossa; inner margin with 7 spine-like setae, outer margin with 6 long spine-like setae increasing in length distally. Paraglossa sub-rectangular; apex with 3 rows of apically pectinate setae. Labial palp with segment I 0,6x length of segments II and III combined; segment I covered with short, simple setae on outer and inner margins and micropores basally; segment II with small distomedial protuberance (distomedial protuberance 0.4x width of base of segment III); inner margin with short simple setae, more numerous at apex; outer margin with few, short, simple setae; dorsally with row of 5 fine and simple setae; segment III conical; length 1,4x width; covered with spine-like and fine, simple setae. Thorax. General coloration brown with light brown marks. Foreleg (Fig. 9). Coloration brown. Ratio of foreleg 1.4:1.0:0.7:0.3. Forefemur. Length about 3x maximum width; dorsally with row of long blunt setae (in lateral view they look like spine-like setae); (length of setae about 0.1x maximum width of femur). Apex rounded and with blunt setae. Ventrally with short spinelike setae and micropores. Tibia. Dorsally with a row of scarce, short, fine, simple setae; ventrally with one row of spine-like setae. Tibio-patelar suture present. Tarsus. Dorsally with scarce short simple setae; ventrally with one row of spine-like setae. Tarsal claw with one row of 15 denticles. Mid and hind legs similar to foreleg. Abdomen. General coloration brown. Segments I and IV with posterior medial white mark; distal 2/3 of segment VII and segment X white; segments II to VII with lateral white longitudinal marks; segments II to VI, VIII and IX sublaterally washed with reddish brown (Fig. 10). Terga (Fig. 11). S urface with abundant scales or scale-bases. Posterior margin with rounded spines. Gills (Fig. 12). On segments II – VII. Margin with narrow spines intercalating short, fine, simple setae; tracheae extending from main trunk to inner and outer margins. Paraproct (Fig. 13). With 8 marginal spines; surface with scale or scale-bases; postero-lateral extension with minute marginal spines. Caudal filaments. Coloration brown. Terminal filament 0.7–0.8x length of cerci. Posterior margin of segments with short spines on each segment. Inner margin of cercus and inner and outer margin of terminal filament with tufts of long, simple setae. Comments. Nymphs of the new species were found exclusively at the Rio Chapecozinho (Fig. 26), a relatively wide river (around 60 meters) with a riverbed formed by a flat basaltic slab covered in most areas by algae and hydrophytes (Podostemaceae) and few allochthonous vegetation. The nymphs were found inhabiting the vertical surface of the riverbed, always associated to hydrophytes and moderate to fast current. The altitude at the type locality is 1031 meters above the sea level (m.a.s.l.). The new species shares several characteristics with A. titthion and A. labiosus, as the absence of a frontal keel, setae at the apex of paraglossa pectinate, legs robust, spines at the posterior margin of terga blunt to rounded, poorly developed distomedial process of labial palp segment II, and, in the case of A. mecistognathus, sp. nov. and A. labiosus, elongate labium. Nevertheless, in the new species all mouthparts are distinctly elongate. In a general aspect, the mouthparts are nearly as long as the head capsule, which clearly distinguishes A. mecistognathus, sp. nov. from its congeners. Etymology. From the Greek words mecist, longest, and gnathus, jaws. An allusion to the unusual elongate mouthparts. Distribution. BRAZIL: Santa Catarina (Fig. 1a). Material examined. HOLOTYPE: Nymph, SANTA CATARINA, Passos Maia, Rio Chapecozinho, S 26°46'1.66" / W 51°49'49.79", 1031 m.a.s.l., 13/iii/2009, pedra em remanso, FFS, EAR cols. (UFES). Abstract

Americabaetis Kluge, 1992 Baetis (Americabaetis) Kluge, 1992: 18. Genus 1 nr Pseudocloeon Roback, 1966: 134. Acerpenna Waltz & McCafferty, in part: Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1994: 66. Americabaetis Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1996: 157; Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, 1999: 260; Domínguez et al., 2006: 66. Diagnoses. The genus was adequately characterized by Lugo-Ortiz and McCafferty (1996) and later by Domínguez et al. (2006). Herein we add one important character regarding the nymphal stage which has been observed in all Brazilian species as well as in an unidentified species from Central America: the shape of the lateral branch of the epicranial suture. In most baetids they are straight or curved, while in Americabaetis they are sinuous, somewhat similar to those of the genus Baetodes Needham & Murphy, and can be very useful when identifying nymphs of the family (see Figs. 2, 18 and 19). Other characteristic that can be emended to the nymphal diagnoses is the presence of scales and/or scale bases over body. Nymphs (modified from Domínguez et al. 2006): 1) Lateral branch of epicranial suture sinuous; 2) mandibles with setae between prostheca and mola, incisors fused apically, and prostheca robust with denticles apically; 3) maxillary palp two-segmented; 4) glossa with a row of long spine-like setae, paraglossae rectangular with 3 rows of long spine-like setae, segment II of labial palp with a distomedial projection; 5) tarsal claws with a single row of denticles; 6) hind wing pads absent; 7) abdominal gills present on segment II–VII; 8) scales and/or scale bases over body. Diagnoses. Nymphs: 1) Frontal keel absent; 2) lingua broadly pointed apically; 3) glossa 0.6x length of paraglossa, 4) apex of paraglossa with rows of pectinate setae; 5) segment II of labial palp with a small distomedial projection; 6) posterior margin of abdominal terga with rounded spines. Male imago: 1) turbinate eyes anteriorly divergent and widely separated from each other, upper surface ellipsoidal (Fig. 14); 2) terga light whitish brown, lateral margins darker (Figs. 14, 15); 3) forceps with first segment constricted medioapically (Fig. 17); 4) posterior margin of subgenital plate with a small rounded projection (Fig. 17); 5) length of body relatively small (4.0 mm). Description (Male imago). Measurements. Body 4.0 mm; forewing 4.0– 4.3 mm; antenna 0.7 mm; tibia I: 1.31 mm; tibia II: 0.88 mm; tibia III: 0.89 mm. Head (Figs. 14–15). Coloration light brown with V shaped brown mark between compound eyes. Turbinate portion of compound eyes orangish; basal half of stalk brown, paler toward apex. Antenna light brown. Dorsal portion of turbinate eyes ellipsoidal; length 1.5x width; stalk height 0.5x width of dorsal portion; inner margins widely separated, divergent anteriorly. Thorax (Figs. 14–15). Pro, meso and metanotum brown; submedioscutum light brown; scutellum dark brown. Sternum brown. Anteronotal protuberance rounded. Metascutellar protuberance pointed dorsally. Legs whitish. Leg I: tibia 1.7x length of femur; tarsi 1.6x length of femur; and with 4 segments decreasing on length apically. Leg II and III: tibia 1.4x length of femur; tarsi 0.4x length of femur. Forewing (Figs. 16) hyaline, posterior region of costal and subcostal veins grayish; veins Costal and subcostal light brown; stigmatic area with 6 cross veins not touching subcostal vein; marginal intercalary paired, except single between veins ICu1 and A; length of intercalary vein between IMA and IMA2 1.7x distance between adjacent longitudinal veins; length of forewing about 2.4x width. Abdomen (Figs. 14–15). Terga light whitish brown, lateral margins darker; tracheation blackish. Sterna light whitish brown. Genitalia (Figs. 17) segment I whitish washed with brown, segments II and III whitish. Forceps segment I distinctly constricted medioapically; 0,5x length of segment II; distance between base of forceps 0,2x distance between lateral margins of forceps. Forceps segment II narrow submedially. Forceps segment III elongate, 2.7x as long as wide; 0.17x length of segment II. Posterior margin of subgenital plate with a small rounded projection. Comments. In Brazil A. labiosus is apparently restricted to the southern area of the country. Their nymphs, as those of A. titthion and A. mecistognathus, sp. nov., inhabit shallow areas with moderate to fast current (Fig. 29). However, unlike these species, they are often associated with dead leaves above rocks. The altitudinal range of this species varies from 700 to 1900 m.a.s.l. Distribution. Diagnoses. Nymphs: 1) frontal keel absent; 2) lingua broadly pointed apically; 3) glossa 0.8x length of paraglossa; 4) apex of paraglossa with rows of pectinate setae; 5) segment II of labial palp with a moderate distomedial projection; 6) posterior margin of abdominal terga with rounded spines; 7) meso and metasternum with a setose paired protuberance. Female imago: 1) forewing with costal area reddish-brown; 2) posterior margin of head dorsally projected; 3) meso and metasterna with small, setose paired protuberance. Male imago: unknown, see comments bellow. Distribution. BRAZIL: Rio Grande do Sul, Paran��, Santa Catarina; Rio de Janeiro, Esp��rito Santo, Minas Gerais (Fig. 1d). Comments. Americabaetis titthion is until now endemic to southeastern Brazil. Nymphs are present in shallow areas above rocks, in moderate to fast current (Fig. 30). The meso and metasternal projections, typical of this species [see Fig. 51 of Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty (1996)], probably aids the nymph to withstand in this kind of habitat. At the Parque Nacional do Capara��, where it is abundant, this is the only species of mayfly found above 2250 m.a.s.l. Although only females of this species have been described (Salles et al. 2003), the vestiges of the meso and metaesternal projections should also be encountered in male adults once these protuberances are found in nymphs of both sexes. This characteristic would be enough to distinguish male imagos of A. titthion from other members of Americabaetis. Lugo-Ortiz and McCafferty (1996), as well as Dom��nguez et al. (2006), described the setae at the apex of the paraglossa of this species as simple. However, we examined nymphs of A. titthion from different localities and concluded that these setae are pectinate, just as in the other species of the genus that live in areas with moderate to fast current above rocks (i.e., A. labiosus and A. mecistognathus, sp. nov.). At least in South America, species that live in a similar habitat, such as those of the genera Baetodes and Camelobaetidius Demoulin, exhibit the same kind of setae at the same place. According to Batista et al. (2006), these mayflies should be assigned to the grazer functional feeding group, once they use the tip of its mouthparts, as collectors, to remove periphyton. The presence of that kind of setae at the apex of the paraglossa should be regarded as a convergence among these genera, and a possible sinapomorphy among these three species of Americabaetis. NEW RECORDS: Pernambuco, Sergipe, Goiás, Amazonas (Fig. 1a). Comments. Americabaetis alphus is probably the species of Ephemeroptera with the widest distributional range in South America, as well as one of the most abundant, at least in Brazil. Their nymphs are found in several biomes and on small streams to large rivers, often associated with marginal vegetation and leaf litter in areas with slow to moderate current (Fig. 28). The altitudinal range of this species is also highly variable, specimens were found from the sea level to 1900 m.a.s.l. They were also encountered in pristine to moderately impacted streams, demonstrating that the species is somewhat tolerant, what, in turn, would explain its wide distribution. Material examined. Abstract

Neocordulia santacatarinensis sp. n. (Figures 1���9) Material. Holotype male: BRAZIL, SANTA CATARINA, Irani River, Ponte Serrada (26 o 55'49,86" S; 52 o 51'52,02" W), IX.2006, C. T. Ravanello & M.E. Anselmini leg. (emerged IX.2006). Etymology. The name refers to the type locality. Male (holotype). Head (Figs.1���3). Postfrons, antefrons, postclypeus, anteclypeus and labium yellowish, with long black setae uniformly distributed, but more concentrated on postfrons; mandibles and maxillae light brown; frons divided by a deep median furrow with flattened facets. Vertex dark brown, rounded, with regularly distributed setae. Occipital triangle large, brown, with sparsely distributed setae. Antennae brown, the first segment black; ocellus pale amber; rear of head light brown. Thorax (Figs. 1���6). Prothorax (Fig. 4) yellowish; anterior lobe undulate and smooth in dorsal view; medial lobe with two dark brown spots, bearing some short setae on dorsal surface; posterior lobe poorly developed, with narrow base laterally and bearing a row of short setae on posterior border. Pterothorax (Figs. 1���2) brown and iridescent metallic green with blue reflections uniformly covered with brown and golden yellow setae. Mesepisternum with a longitudinal light brown stripe and blue and green reflections; longitudinal green stripe of metepisternum wider than half of this sclerite, regularly covered with golden yellow setae; metepimeron green with whitish-yellow stripe extended along ventro-lateral border. Legs yellowish except for black hind tibiae and tarsi, and all pretarsal claws. All tibiae with a prominent ventral keel along distal third. Wings hyaline, golden yellow along costal-medial region; venation black; costa pale in all wings; pterostigma yellow with almost parallel sides; membranule enlarged, pale, ending before apex of anal triangle. Wing margin at distal end of anal triangle entire, without a distinct excavation. Anal angle rounded. Venation (Fig. 1). Antenodals in FW 9/9; in HW 6/7; postnodals in FW 8/9, in HW 10/11. Arculus proximal to second antenodal. Sectors of arculus not stalked, originating at basal third of arculus. All triangles free. One CuA crossvein in FW, two in HW. Discoidal field in FW with two rows of cells except 3 rows on distal end. Discoidal field in HW with one row of cells for a distance of 3 cells distally to triangle. Mspl indistinct. RP 2 not undulate. Rspl distinct with one row of cells between it and IR 2. Anal loop elongate surpassing level of distal angle of triangle, with 14/15 cells. Space between anal loop and anal triangle with one cell at base. Space between posterior border of anal area and distal end of anal loop with 2 rows of cells. Posterior border of anal loop with 3 cells. Abdomen (Fig. 1). S7���8 moderately widened, depressed dorsoventrally; dorsolateral carinae present on S3���7; sternum of S8 with a prominent biconical protuberance (Fig. 6) which surpasses half of segment length and has a bifid distal end with divergent tips. S1���9 yellowish with dark brown spots distributed as follows: one small elongate spot on postero-lateral border of S1; one pair of small spots along distal half of S2; one elongate spot extending latero-ventrally along distal third of S3; paired dark brown triangular lateral spots posterior to transverse carinae on S4���9. S10 lacking spots. Genital lobe (Fig. 5) smoothly rounded posterodistally; hamule long, surpassing half the height of genital lobe; inner branch of hamule wider than outer branch, with 4 small teeth, outer branch pointed at distal end. Cerci slightly divergent at tips, longer than S9+10, covered with long setae, with a small basal tubercle visible in lateral and ventral view (Figs. 7���9). Measurements (mm): Total length (incl. anal appendages) 51.8; maximum width of head 6.8; total length of thorax 8.4; length of metepisternal stripe 5.5; length of femur I 4.8, II 6.6, III 7.3; tibia I 5.2, II 7.1, III 8.2; tibial keel I 3.4, II 4.0, III 6.1; length of FW 34.7, HW 33.3; maximum width of HW 10.2; FW pterostigma length 2.9, HW 3.1; distance from base to nodus 17.0, distance from nodus to apex 17.6; total length of abdomen (incl. anal appendages) 33.5; length of hamule 1.4; maximum width of hamule 0.6; length of genital lobe 1.6, width of genital lobe 0.9; length of cerci 3.1, length of epiproct 2.4, length of biconical sternal protuberance 2.8. Diagnosis. Neocordulia santacatarinensis is placed in the genus Neocordulia Selys, 1882 as it conforms to the characters mentioned for it by May (1991), Costa & Santos (2000a, 2000b), Machado (2005) and Garrison et al. (2006): 1) fore wing discoidal field parallel sided; 2) two rows of cells throughout discoidal field of FW; 3) subtriangle of FW free; 4) anal loop elongate, lacking sole; 5) apex of anal loop separated from posterior border of HW by three cells; 6) midrib distinct; 7) anal area in HW with three rows of cells; 8) presence of a prominent biconical protuberance on the sternum of abdominal segment 8; 9) distal segment of vesica spermalis with one apical flagellum; 10) posterior margin of anterior lamina with medial arched rim bearing a tuft of setae on each lateral end; 11) posterior hamule bifid. This new species differs from other species of the subgenus Neocordulia which have a protuberance on sternum 8 by the distinct biconical shape of the protuberance, shape of caudal appendages and of anterior lobe of prothorax, and by the inner branches of hamules bearing 4 teeth. Larva. (Figs. 10���15). General shape of body typical of Libellulidae, very similar to N. androgynis. General coloration dark brown (Fig. 10). Head (Figs. 10���11). Small, 1.5 times as wide as long; general shape rhomboidal, as wide as thorax in dorsal view; eyes small, with rounded outer margin. Dorsal crest covered with long setae. Occiput rounded, rear slightly concave; posterior corner on each side with more than 20 long setae and with many short setae nearer eyes (Figs. 10���11). Postocular region with spiniform setae (Fig. 11). Antennae 7 segmented, segment 5 the longest. Labrum rectangular, fringed with long hairs. Mandibular formula (Figs. 13���14): L122'34 0 abd/ R1234 y abd. Labium long and wide, reaching mesocoxae; prementum (Fig. 12) with 11 setae of varying length on each side, ligula smooth; no spines at junction of labial palp with prementum. Labial palp (Fig. 12) triangular with 7 setae; movable hook small; distal margin of palp with 7 crenulations, each bearing 5���7 spiniform setae; internal and external margins with many setae. Thorax. Prothorax rectangular. Wing pads parallel reaching distal margin of S5. Legs long, posterior pair longer than abdomen. Abdomen. Cylindrical (Fig. 10), widest at S5 (1.8 mm), middorsal hooks absent. Short lateral spines on S9���10. Anal appendages triangular (Fig. 15), acuminate; epiproct and cerci similar in length; paraprocts longer than epiproct and cerci. Measurements (mm): Total length 24.7; width of head 7.01, length 4.57; mesofemur 7.24, mesotibia 8.0, mesotarsus 3.38; anterior wing pads 7.38, posterior wing pads 7.74. Habitat. The larva was collected in a stream with substrate composed of pebbles, abundant alloctonous organic material (leaves, twigs, etc.), at an average of about 0.2 m depth and clear water. Marginal vegetation on the right margin was undisturbed while the left was used for camping. This stretch is located at 520 m altitude, with a measured pH of 7, average conductivity of 35.40 S.cm -1, yearly average water temperature of 15.23 o C, and dissolved oxygen of 8.80 mg. L -1. Discussion. This new species can be distinguished from all other species of the genus by the biconical shape of the protuberance of sternum S8, Rspl with 9 cells in FW and 11 cells in HW, and inner branch of hamule with 4 teeth. Based on shape of cerci and similarity of larvae we believe that N. santacatarinensis shows closer affinities to N. androgynis (described by Selys, 1871 as Gomphomacromia androgynis) but differs (characters for N. androgynis in parenthesis) by its undulated anterior lobe of prothorax (straight), distal end of cerci slightly divergent (strongly divergent), outer branch of hamule surpassing half the length of genital lobe (not surpassing), protuberance on S8 biconical (robust and blunt) and presence of 4 small teeth on inner branch of hamule (1���2). Abstract

The paper deals with noise map calculation, according to the first deadline of the END (Environmental Noise Directive, 2002/49/EC), for Milan district major roads. The roads with more than six million vehicle passages per year have been estimated to cover 405 km out of 1090 km total. Noise emission has been calculated from peak hour flow data for each segment of the whole road network and from some local traffic direct measurements. A statistical method to assign mean flow values to each road segment has been used, according to Italian reference periods. These data enable to use an acoustic model on a wide area with several line sources in order to obtain noise propagation maps of Lden and Lnight indicators. A procedure to estimate people exposed to different noise levels, as required by the END, has been also studied. Through a geographic information system it has been possible to intersect population input data (demographic density for different areas, buildings use type and buildings volumetric data) and noise mapping data. Every step of the procedure has been carried out complying with WG‐AEN Good Practice Guide recommendations, on the basis of the best available data in Milan district.

They are represented in Brazil by two species. Troglocarcinus corallicola, found from Maranhão to Bahia states and that occurs in many species of the coral families Mussidae, Faviidae, Caryophillidae and Siderastreidae. Opecarcinus hypostegus, reported from the state of Pernambuco, is mainly associated with Agaricia fragilis. The range of O. hypostegus is extended to Rio Grande do Norte and Alagoas states. Males are usually smaller than females, and couples may be eventually found sharing cavities. Ovigerous females and males of O. hypostegus are recorded for the first time inhabiting adjoining cavities on colonies of Siderastrea stellata, an endemic reef coral widespread along the Brazilian littoral.

Abstract

The paper deals with the performances of noise barriers designed using the reflecting phase grating diffuser theory, which is based on the interference produced by slots of different depths. Usually such structures are used to improve sound diffusion in recording rooms, but they can be suitable also to reduce highway and railway noise for their capability of scattering sounds. A theoretical approach has been used to project their shape using a self‐developed VB application, able to predict the scattered sound distribution as well. The theoretical results have been verified with a physical scale model in an anechoic room: insertion losses in several configurations have been measured, together with intensity measurements of the scattered acoustic field. Experimental results seem to match quite well those obtained using the simulation program.

Abstract

Intrasacral meningoceles are rare conditions that can cause symptoms of nerve root compression. We report a case of a 18-year-old female, who presented with urinary incontinence. The neurological and urological evaluation revealed lack of detrusor muscle reflex. This finding supported the hypothesis of spinal disraphism. Magnetic resonance image revealed an intrasacral meningocele. The patient was submitted to surgical excision of the lesion without postoperative complications. In the present paper, the pathogenesis, clinical picture, neuroradiological findings and surgical treatment are discussed.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the results of the auditory cognitive potential in a group of normal adults. The evoked response was obtained at Cz and Fz. The data collected were statistically analysed. The mean latencies of N1, P2, P2AP, N2, P3 and amplitude of P3, as well the standard deviation of these variables were presented. We briefly comment on some pitfalls related to interpretation of the results as well as the limitations of the technique as a diagnostic tool.

Abstract

Yeasts and coliform bacteria were isolated from water that accumulated in the central cups and adjacent leaf axilae of two bromeliads, Neoregelia cruenta of a coastal sand dune and Quesnelia quesneliana of a mangrove ecosystem near the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The mean total coliform counts were above 10,000 per 100 mL for waters of both plants, but the mean fecal coliform counts were only 74 per 100 mL for Q. quesneliana and mostly undetected in water from N. cruenta. Of 90 fecal coliform isolates, 51 were typical of Escherichia coli in colony morphology and indol, methyl red, Volges-Proskauer, and citrate (IMViC) tests. Seven representatives of the typical E. coli cultures were identified as this species, but the identifications of nine other coliform bacteria were mostly dubious. The yeast community of N. cruenta was typical of plant surfaces with basidiomycetous yeasts anamorphs, and the black yeast Aureobasidium pullulans was prevalent. Quesnelia quesneliana had a substantial proportion of ascomycetous yeasts and their anamorphs, including a probable new biotype of Saccharomyces unisporus. Our results suggested that the microbial communities in bromeliad waters are typically autochtonous and not contaminants.
