1. Fingerprints of supersymmetric spin and charge dynamics observed by inelastic neutron scattering

Abstract

Supersymmetry is an algebraic property of a quantum Hamiltonian that, by giving every boson a fermionic superpartner and vice versa, may underpin physics beyond the Standard Model. Fractional bosonic and fermionic quasiparticles are familiar in condensed matter, as in the spin and charge excitations of the $t$-$J$ model describing electron dynamics in one-dimensional materials, but this type of symmetry is almost unknown. However, the triplet excitations of a quantum spin ladder in an applied magnetic field provide a supersymmetric analogue of the $t$-$J$ chain. Here we perform neutron spectroscopy on the spin-ladder compounds (C$_5$D$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ and (C$_5$D$_{12}$N)$_2$CuCl$_4$ over a range of applied fields and temperatures, and apply matrix-product-state methods to the ladder and equivalent chain models. From the momentum-resolved dynamics of a single charge-like excitation in a bath of fractional spins, we find essential differences in thermal broadening between the supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric sectors. The persistence of a strict zone-centre pole at all temperatures constitutes an observable consequence of supersymmetry that marks the beginning of supersymmetric studies in experimental condensed matter.

Abstract

Electron-neutrino charged-current interactions with xenon nuclei were modeled in the nEXO neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay detector (~5 metric ton, 90% ${}^{136}$Xe, 10% ${}^{134}$Xe) to evaluate its sensitivity to supernova neutrinos. Predictions for event rates and detectable signatures were modeled using the Model of Argon Reaction Low Energy Yields (MARLEY) event generator. We find good agreement between MARLEY's predictions and existing theoretical calculations of the inclusive cross sections at supernova neutrino energies. The interactions modeled by MARLEY were simulated within the nEXO simulation framework and were run through an example reconstruction algorithm to determine the detector's efficiency for reconstructing these events. The simulated data, incorporating the detector response, were used to study the ability of nEXO to reconstruct the incident electron-neutrino spectrum and these results were extended to a larger xenon detector of the same isotope enrichment. We estimate that nEXO will be able to observe electron-neutrino interactions with xenon from supernovae as far as 5-8 kpc from Earth, while the ability to reconstruct incident electron-neutrino spectrum parameters from observed interactions in nEXO is limited to closer supernovae., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

Large-scale low-background detectors are increasingly used in rare-event searches as experimental collaborations push for enhanced sensitivity. However, building such detectors, in practice, creates an abundance of radioassay data especially during the conceptual phase of an experiment when hundreds of materials are screened for radiopurity. A tool is needed to manage and make use of the radioassay screening data to quantitatively assess detector design options. We have developed a Materials Database Application for the nEXO experiment to serve this purpose. This paper describes this database, explains how it functions, and discusses how it streamlines the design of the experiment.

Abstract

Liquid xenon time projection chambers are promising detectors to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu \beta \beta$), due to their response uniformity, monolithic sensitive volume, scalability to large target masses, and suitability for extremely low background operations. The nEXO collaboration has designed a tonne-scale time projection chamber that aims to search for 0$\nu \beta \beta$ of \ce{^{136}Xe} with projected half-life sensitivity of $1.35\times 10^{28}$~yr. To reach this sensitivity, the design goal for nEXO is $\leq$1\% energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value ($2458.07\pm 0.31$~keV). Reaching this resolution requires the efficient collection of both the ionization and scintillation produced in the detector. The nEXO design employs Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) to detect the vacuum ultra-violet, 175 nm scintillation light of liquid xenon. This paper reports on the characterization of the newest vacuum ultra-violet sensitive Fondazione Bruno Kessler VUVHD3 SiPMs specifically designed for nEXO, as well as new measurements on new test samples of previously characterised Hamamatsu VUV4 Multi Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs). Various SiPM and MPPC parameters, such as dark noise, gain, direct crosstalk, correlated avalanches and photon detection efficiency were measured as a function of the applied over voltage and wavelength at liquid xenon temperature (163~K). The results from this study are used to provide updated estimates of the achievable energy resolution at the decay $Q$-value for the nEXO design.

5. Majorana edge-modes in a spinful particle conserving model

Abstract

We show the presence of Majorana edge modes in an interacting fermionic ladder with spin in a number conserved setting. The interchain single particle hopping is suppressed and only a pair hopping is present between the different chains of the ladder. Additionally, the hopping along the chains is spin imbalanced and a transverse magnetic field is applied breaking time-reversal invariance. We study the robustness of the topological phase with respect to an on-site interaction between the spin-up and spin-down fermions and the spin dependent imbalance of the hopping. The main result of the present work is that the topological phase survives for a finite region in the parameter space in the presence of interactions. The localized Majorana edge modes seems to be more stable in the case when the on-site interaction is an attraction., Comment: 22 pages, 26 figures

In this article, we consider a one-dimensional symmetric exclusion process in weak contact with reservoirs at the boundary. In the diffusive time-scaling the empirical measure evolves according to the heat equation with Robin boundary conditions. We prove the associated dynamical large deviations principle.

Abstract

We study a possible calibration technique for the nEXO experiment using a $^{127}$Xe electron capture source. nEXO is a next-generation search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) that will use a 5-tonne, monolithic liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The xenon, used both as source and detection medium, will be enriched to 90% in $^{136}$Xe. To optimize the event reconstruction and energy resolution, calibrations are needed to map the position- and time-dependent detector response. The 36.3 day half-life of $^{127}$Xe and its small $Q$-value compared to that of $^{136}$Xe $0\nu\beta\beta$ would allow a small activity to be maintained continuously in the detector during normal operations without introducing additional backgrounds, thereby enabling in-situ calibration and monitoring of the detector response. In this work we describe a process for producing the source and preliminary experimental tests. We then use simulations to project the precision with which such a source could calibrate spatial corrections to the light and charge response of the nEXO TPC., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

This perspective article is a product of the work of an expert group within the Prebiotic Task Force convened by the International Life Sciences Institute Europe, a non-profit organization that brings together experts from academia, industry, and public service to catalyze nutrition science for public benefit. An expert group was conceived in October 2023 to discuss the evidence base on the use of prebiotics to promote cognitive functioning, with a focus on highlighting knowledge gaps and proposing a list of recommendations to guide this specific area of research forward. To address this, we evaluated existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses of human intervention studies that examine the effects of prebiotics on cognitive functioning. These are predominantly conducted in healthy participants under basal conditions and have, to date, revealed limited effects. In this perspective, we propose that prebiotics should be investigated as agents to promote cognitive resilience by testing their effects on cognitive performance under certain cognition-taxing factors that individuals encounter across their lifespan. These include stress, poor sleep outcomes, sedentary behavior, and unhealthy dietary patterns, all of which have been shown to be associated with altered microbiome and impact global cognition or specific cognitive domains. In addition, we recommend identifying vulnerable populations that are either subclinical or that struggle chronically or periodically with 1 or more cognition-taxing factors, to better uncover the boundary conditions for prebiotic effectiveness. By broadening the scope of research to include diverse populations and challenging conditions in daily life or experimental settings, we can expand our understanding of the role of prebiotics not only in cognitive health or impairment, but also as potential preventative agents that may promote cognitive resilience during aging and in response to various lifestyle-related challenges.

Abstract

We study, by means of the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, the evolution of the ground state in a one-dimensional topological insulator, from the non-interacting to the strongly-interacting limit, where the system can be mapped onto a topological Kondo-insulator model. We focus on a toy model Hamiltonian (i.e., the interacting "$sp$-ladder" model), which could be experimentally realized in optical lattices with higher orbitals loaded with ultra-cold fermionic atoms. Our goal is to shed light on the emergence of the strongly-interacting ground state and its topological classification as the Hubbard-$U$ interaction parameter of the model is increased. Our numerical results show that the ground state can be generically classified as a symmetry-protected topological phase of the Haldane-type, even in the non-interacting case $U=0$ where the system can be additionally classified as a time-reversal $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-topological insulator, and evolves adiabatically between the non-interacting and strongly interacting limits., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 appendix

14. Susceptibility of Fall Armyworm Field Populations to Vip3Aa/Cry Bt Maize in a Tropical Agricultural Region

Abstract

Fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda) is a polyphagous and migratory lepidopteran pest insect in field crops and is notoriously invasive worldwide. In large portions of the Americas, its populations are managed using transgenic maize or cotton varieties producing insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), primarily Vip3Aa pyramided with Cry Bt proteins. We determined the susceptibility of FAW field populations from locations pressured with such maize hybrids for over five years. We used time–mortality bioassays with F1 third-instar larvae of six geographically distinct populations collected in maize fields of a tropical agricultural region encompassing four Brazilian states. We maintained the neonate progeny from the field populations on an artificial diet until the third instar, and then determined their survival curves on the foliage of three Vip3Aa/Cry-producing Bt maize hybrids. Death of the mid-size, third-instar FAWs occurred relatively rapidly, with larval mortality rates reaching 98–100% in less than five days regardless of Bt maize hybrid. However, median survival time (ST50) for the larvae differed among the populations, with the lowest and highest ST50 values occurring for PI-Cr (42 h, 1.75 d) and PI-Ur populations (66–90 h, 2.75–3.75 h), respectively. Therefore, the F1 third-instar larvae of FAW populations were largely susceptible to Vip3Aa/Cry-producing maize foliage, and the most contrasting susceptibility occurred in the insects from Piauí state, Brazil. These results indicate that progeny of FAWs from areas highly pressured with Vip3Aa/Cry Bt maize hybrids are killed on maize foliage producing Vip3Aa and Cry Bt proteins despite field reports of increased leaf damage by the larvae in some locations. This research informs decision making for Bt-crop resistance management by producers, technicians, and researchers in local, regional, and world agriculture.

Abstract

We investigate, by means of a field-theory analysis combined with the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, a theoretical model for a strongly correlated quantum system in one dimension realizing a topologically-ordered Haldane phase ground state. The model consists of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to a tight-binding chain via two competing Kondo exchange couplings of different type: a "s-wave" Kondo coupling ($J^s_{K}$), and a less common "p-wave" ($J^p_{K}$) Kondo coupling. While the first coupling is the standard Kondo interaction studied in many condensed-matter systems, the latter has been recently introduced by Alexandrov and Coleman [Phys. Rev. B 90, 115147 (2014)] as a possible mechanism leading to a topological Kondo-insulating ground state in one dimension. As a result of this competition, a topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) occurs in the system for a critical value of the ratio $J^s_{K}/J^p_{K}$, separating a (Haldane-type) topological phase from a topologically trivial ground state where the system can be essentially described as a product of local singlets. We study and characterize the TQPT by means for the magnetization profile, the entanglement entropy and the full entanglement spectrum of the ground state. Abstract

The WHO Dementia Global Action Plan states that rehabilitation services for dementia are required to promote health, reduce disability, and maintain quality of life for those living with dementia. Current services, however, are scarce, particularly for people with young-onset dementia (YOD). This article, written by an international group of multidisciplinary dementia specialists, offers a three-part overview to promote the development of rehabilitation services for YOD. Firstly, we provide a synthesis of knowledge on current evidence-based rehabilitative therapies for early-onset Alzheimer’s disease (EOAD), behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). Secondly, we discuss the characteristics of rehabilitation services for YOD, providing examples across three continents for how these services can be embedded in existing settings and the different roles of the rehabilitation multidisciplinary team. Lastly, we conclude by highlighting the potential of telehealth in making rehabilitation services more accessible for people with YOD. Overall, with this paper, we aim to encourage clinical leads to begin introducing at least some rehabilitation into their services, leveraging existing resources and finding support in the collective expertise of the broader multidisciplinary dementia professional community.

Abstract

We show the presence of Majorana edge modes in an interacting fermionic ladder with spin in a number conserved setting. The interchain single particle hopping is suppressed and only a pair hopping is present between the different chains of the ladder. Additionally, the hopping along the chains is spin imbalanced and a transverse magnetic field is applied breaking time-reversal invariance. We study the robustness of the topological phase with respect to an on-site interaction between the spin-up and spin-down fermions and the spin dependent imbalance of the hopping. The main result of the present work is that the topological phase survives for a finite region in the parameter space in the presence of interactions. The localized Majorana edge modes seems to be more stable in the case when the on-site interaction is an attraction., 22 pages, 26 figures

The first case was described by Hickman in 1869. An ectopic thyroid is often asymptomatic, but pathological or physiological conditions inducing hyperproduction of thyroid-stimulating hormone can lead an ectopic thyroid to become symptomatic. Treatment of the symptomatic ectopic thyroid can be medical, with hormone-suppressing therapy, or surgical.Case presentation: A 17-year-old female presented to our outpatient clinic complaining of a sensation of a lump in her throat. Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) examination identified a swelling of the base of the tongue in the glossoepiglottic area. Thyroid scintigraphy showed a single contrast enhancement in the sublingual region, instead of in the normal anatomical position of the thyroid. She was treated surgically after failed hormone-suppressing therapy. An arteriography performed before the surgery showed vascular anomalies and was useful in surgical planning.Conclusion: Recognition of vascular anomalies in an ectopic thyroid is fundamental before surgical planning, therefore, accurate radiological study of the vasculature should always be planned before surgical treatment of this disease.Keywords: ectopic thyroid, arteriography, transoral approach, tongue

Modified supracricoid laryngectomy using sternohyoid muscles for neoglottis reconstruction is a new surgical technique. This report evaluates oncological and functional outcomes of this new technique and its feasibility in elderly patients.Methods: Clinical records from 21 consecutive patients affected by glottic cancer and treated by modified SCL between 2004 and 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. Postoperative parameters and quality of voice after modified SCL were retrospectively reviewed. Actuarial overall survival, disease-specific survival rates, and recurrence-free survival rates were assessed. The functional and oncological outcomes of patients over 65 years were compared with those of patients younger than 65 years of age.Results: There were no postoperative complications and all of the patients had complete swallowing rehabilitation. Twenty of the 21 patients had decannulation. Two patients received total laryngectomy for locoregional relapse. Overall survival and disease-specific survival rates were 100%. Recurrence-free survival rates were 90.1% and 90% in patients younger and older than 65 years of age, respectively. The larynx preservation index was lower in patients who were older than 65 years of age. The postoperative courses with regard to functional outcome and voice quality in elderly patients were similar to those of patients younger than 65 years of age.Conclusion: Modified SCL is a new open organ preservation surgical technique that is oncologically safe. However, the recovery of the voice after SCL may result in different degrees of dysphonia. To improve the functional recovery and quality of the voice, we realized a modified supracricoid laryngectomy (MSCL) using sternohyoid muscles for neoglottic reconstruction in selected patients affected by T1b–T2 laryngeal cancer. In this study, we evaluate the quality of life (QoL) in patients treated by SCL and MSCL.Methods: The quality of life (QoL) evaluation was undertaken using the Italian version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire.Results: The overall QoL, assessed with European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C30, was better in patients treated with MSCL than in those treated with SCL. The better QoL correlates with the highest response scores to the questions on the relative global functioning scales in patients treated with MSCL.Conclusion: The new surgical technique has improved the QoL of patients with early laryngeal cancer, with improved communication ability achieved. Reconstruction of neocords in MSCL improves speech function in comparison to SCL, and patients experience less discomfort and achieve an almost normal communication performance.Keywords: supracricoid laryngectomy, quality of life, laryngeal carcinoma, EORTC QLQ

Abstract

En este informe se revisa el proceso editorial de Investigaciones Europeas de Dirección y Economía de la Empresa durante 2009 y se avanzan algunos datos del año 2010. En 2009 se recibieron 92 manuscritos procedentes fundamentalmente de España (95,7%). Consecuentemente, el idioma más utilizado fue el español, seguido del portugués y el inglés. En este año, el tiempo medio entre recepción y publicación ha sido relativamente bajo (296 días) para lo que resulta habitual en la mayoría de publicaciones del área de economía de la empresa. La tasa de rechazo fue del 70,71%, publicándose un total de 34 artículos de investigación originales.
