[Background] Photon strength functions are an important ingredient in calculations relevant for the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. The relation to the photoabsorption cross section allows to experimentally constrain photon strength functions by investigating the photo-response of atomic nuclei. [Purpose] We determine the photoresponse of $^{66}$Zn in the energy region of 5.6 MeV to 9.9 MeV and analyze the contribution of the "elastic" decay channel back to the ground state. In addition, for the elastic channel electric and magnetic dipole transitions were separated. [Methods] Nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments were performed using a linearly-polarized quasi-monoenergetic photon beam at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source. Photon beam energies from 5.6 to 9.9 MeV with an energy spread of about 3% were selected in steps of 200-300 keV. Two High Purity Germanium detectors were used for the subsequent $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. [Results] Full photoabsorption cross sections are extracted from the data making use of the monoenergetic character of the photon beam. For the ground-state decay channel, the average contribution of electric and magnetic dipole strengths is disentangled. The average branching ratio back to the ground state is determined as well. [Conclusions] The new results indicate lower cross sections when compared to the values extracted from a former experiment using bremsstrahlung on $^{66}$Zn. In the latter, the average branching ratio to the ground state is estimated from statistical-model calculations in order to analyze the data. Corresponding estimates from statistical-model calculations underestimate this branching ratio compared to the values extracted from the present analysis, which would partly explain the high cross sections determined from the bremsstrahlung data.

High-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy of 18N is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array AGATA, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an 18O beam on a 181Ta target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in 18N below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 0^-_1 and 1^-_2 excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions, and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in 16N and 18N, for the first time. Understanding the 18N structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

Lifetimes of low-spin excited states in $^{98}$Zr were measured using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift technique and the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The nucleus of interest was populated in a $^{96}$Zr($^{18}$O,$^{16}$O)$^{98}$Zr two-neutron transfer reaction at the Cologne FN Tandem accelerator. Lifetimes of six low-spin excited states, of which four are unknown, were measured. The deduced $B(E2)$ values were compared with Monte Carlo shell model and interacting boson model with configuration mixing calculations. The heaviest N=Z doubly-magic nucleus, $^{100}$Sn, and the neighboring nuclei offer unique opportunities to investigate the properties of nuclear interaction in extreme conditions. In particular, the Cd isotopes are expected to present features similar to those found in the Sn isotopic chain, since they have only two proton holes in the Z=50 shell. In this manuscript, the lifetime measurements of low-lying states in the even-mass $^{102-108}$Cd is presented. Thanks to the powerful detection capabilities of AGATA array and VAMOS++ spectrometer, the unusual employment of multi-nucleon transfer reactions permitted to investigate the first 2$^+$ and 4$^+$ states in all these nuclei, together with various deformed bands in $^{106}$Cd. The results were interpreted in the context of new state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, using the symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing approach. Despite the similarities in the electromagnetic properties of the low-lying states, there is a fundamental structural difference between the ground-state bands in the Z=48 and Z=50 isotopes. The comparison between experimental and theoretical results revealed a rotational character of the Cd nuclei, which have prolate-deformed ground states with $\beta_2 \approx 0.2$. At this deformation Z=48 becomes a closed-shell configuration, which is favored with respect to the spherical one., Comment: V1 : 14 pages, 12 figures. V2 : 16 pages, 11 figures. A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range. The method is applied to low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions populating nuclei with complex velocity distributions. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the $^{18}$O(7.0 MeV/u) + $^{181}$Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in $^{17}$O and $^{19}$O, with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the $\sim$20-400 fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by $\gamma$-tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction, at the basis of the detailed analysis of $\gamma$-ray lineshape and resulting state lifetime determination. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

To test the predictive power of ab initio nuclear structure theory, the lifetime of the second 2+ state in neutron-rich 20O, tau(2+_2 ) = 150(+80-30) fs, and an estimate for the lifetime of the second 2+ state in 16C have been obtained, for the first time. The results were achieved via a novel Monte Carlo technique that allowed us to measure nuclear state lifetimes in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range, by analyzing the Doppler-shifted gamma-transition line shapes of products of low-energy transfer and deep-inelastic processes in the reaction 18O (7.0 MeV/u) + 181Ta. The requested sensitivity could only be reached owing to the excellent performances of the AGATA gamma-tracking array, coupled to the PARIS scintillator array and to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. The experimental lifetimes agree with predictions of ab initio calculations using two- and three-nucleon interactions, obtained with the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group for 20O, and with the no-core shell model for 16C. The present measurement shows the power of electromagnetic observables, determined with high-precision gamma spectroscopy, to assess the quality of first-principles nuclear structure calculations, complementing common benchmarks based on nuclear energies. The proposed experimental approach will be essential for short lifetimes measurements in unexplored regions of the nuclear chart, including r-process nuclei, when intense ISOL-type beams become available.

The lifetimes of the low-lying excited states $2^+$ and $4^+$ have been directly measured in the neutron-deficient $^{106,108}$Sn isotopes. The nuclei were populated via a deep-inelastic reaction and the lifetime measurement was performed employing a differential plunger device. The emitted $\gamma$ rays were detected by the AGATA array, while the reaction products were uniquely identified by the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations with realistic forces indicate that, independently of the pairing content of the interaction, the quadrupole force is dominant in the $B(E2; 2_1^+ \to 0_{g.s.}^+)$ values and it describes well the experimental pattern for $^{104-114}$Sn; the $B(E2; 4_1^+ \to 2_1^+)$ values, measured here for the first time, depend critically on a delicate pairing-quadrupole balance, disclosed by the very precise results in $^{108}$Sn. This result provides insight in the hitherto unexplained $B(E2; 4_1^+ \to 2_1^+)/B(E2; 2_1^+ \to 0_{g.s.}^+) < 1$ anomaly., Comment: V1: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, theoretical interpretation described in detail in the arXiv paper of A.P.Zuker (cross-reference) V2: added reference to A.P. The lifetimes of the $2^+_1$, the $2^+_2$ and the $3^-_1$ states of $^{210}$Po have been measured in the $^{208}$Pb($^{12}$C,$^{10}$Be)$^{210}$Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The results for the lifetime of the $2^+_1$ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for consistent description of the properties of the yrast $2^+_1$, $4^+_1$, $6^+_1$, and $8^+_1$ states of $^{210}$Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. The Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

The influence on $\gamma$-ray spectra of differential nonlinearities (DNL) in subranging, pipelined analog-to-digital converts (ADCs) used for digital $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy was investigated. The influence of the DNL error on the $\gamma$-ray spectra, depending on the input count-rate and the dynamic range has been investigated systematically. It turned out, that the DNL becomes more significant in $\gamma$-ray spectra with larger dynamic range of the spectroscopy system. An event-by-event offline correction algorithm was developed and tested extensively. This correction algorithm works especially well for high dynamic ranges.

A dedicated setup for the in-beam measurement of absolute cross sections of astrophysically relevant charged-particle induced reactions is presented. These, usually very low, cross sections at energies of astrophysical interest are important to improve the modeling of the nucleosynthesis processes of heavy nuclei. Particular emphasis is put on the production of the $p$ nuclei during the astrophysical $\gamma$ process. The recently developed setup utilizes the high-efficiency $\gamma$-ray spectrometer HORUS, which is located at the 10 MV FN tandem ion accelerator of the Institute for Nuclear Physics in Cologne. The design of this setup will be presented and results of the recently measured $^{89}$Y(p,$\gamma$)$^{90}$Zr reaction will be discussed. The excellent agreement with existing data shows, that the HORUS spectrometer is a powerful tool to determine total and partial cross sections using the in-beam method with high-purity germanium detectors.

The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes, $^{184,186}$Hg, were studied with the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method using the Gammasphere array and the K\"oln Plunger device. The Differential Decay Curve Method (DDCM) was employed to determine the lifetimes of the yrast states in $^{184,186}$Hg. An improvement on previously measured values of yrast states up to $8^{+}$ is presented as well as first values for the $9_{3}$ state in $^{184}$Hg and $10^{+}$ state in $^{186}$Hg. $B(E2)$ values are calculated and compared to a two-state mixing model which utilizes the variable moment of inertia (VMI) model, allowing for extraction of spin-dependent mixing strengths and amplitudes., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

The lifetimes of the first 2$^{+}$ states in the neutron-deficient $^{76,78}$Sr isotopes were measured using a unique combination of the $\gamma$-ray line-shape method and two-step nucleon exchange reactions at intermediate energies. The transition rates for the 2$^{+}$ states were determined to be $B$(E2;2$^{+}$$\to 0^{+}$) = 2220(270) e$^{2}$fm$^{4}$ for $^{76}$Sr and 1800(250) e$^{2}$fm$^{4}$ for $^{78}$Sr, corresponding to large deformation of $\beta_2$ = 0.45(3) for $^{76}$Sr and 0.40(3) for $^{78}$Sr. The present data provide experimental evidence for mutually enhanced collectivity that occurs at $N$ = $Z$ = 38. The systematic behavior of the excitation energies and $B$(E2) values indicates a signature of shape coexistence in $^{76}$Sr, characterizing $^{76}$Sr as one of most deformed nuclei with an unusually reduced $E$(4$^{+}$)/$E$(2$^{+}$) ratio., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review C Rapid Communication

We report here the first direct lifetime measurement of the 2+1 state in 72,74Zn. The neutron-rich beam was produced by in-flight fragmentation of 76Ge at the Grand Acc\'el\'erateur National d'Ions Lourds and separated with the LISE spectrometer. The 2+1 state was excited by inelastic scattering and knock-out reaction on a CD2 target and its lifetime was measured by the recoil-distance Dopplershift method with the K\"oln plunger device combined with the EXOGAM detectors. The lifetimes of the 2+1 states in 72,74Zn were determined to be 17.9(18) and 27.0(24) ps, which correspond to reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 2+1 \rightarrow 0+) = 385(39) and 370(33) e2fm4, respectively. These values support the idea of a systematic maximum of collectivity at N = 42 for Zn, Ge and Se nuclei. In addition, the available systematics in the neighboring nuclei point towards a transition from a spherical oscillator at N = 40 to complete {\gamma}-softness at N = 42., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. To investigate the possible X(5) character of 122Ba, suggested by the ground state band energy pattern, the lifetimes of the lowest yrast states of 122Ba have been measured, via the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift method. The relevant levels have been populated by using the 108Cd(16O,2n)122Ba and the 112Sn(13C,3n)122Ba reactions. The B(E2) values deduced in the present work are compared to the predictions of the X(5) model and to calculations performed in the framework of the IBA-1 and IBA-2 models.

A comprehensive decay scheme of $^{93}$Nb below 2 MeV has been constructed from information obtained with the $^{93}$Nb(n,n$^\prime$$\gamma$) and $^{94}$Zr(p,2n$\gamma$$\gamma$)$^{93}$Nb reactions. Branching ratios, lifetimes, transition multipolarities and spin assignments have been determined. From $M1$ and $E2$ strengths, fermionic-bosonic excitations of isoscalar and isovector character have been identified from the weak coupling $\pi1g_{9/2}$$\otimes$$^{92}_{40}$Zr and $\pi2p_{1/2}^{-1}$$\otimes$$^{94}_{42}$Mo configurations. A microscopic interpretation of such excitations is attained from shell-model calculations using low-momentum effective interactions., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The transition rates for the 2_{1}^{+} states in 62,64,66Fe were studied using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift technique applied to projectile Coulomb excitation reactions. The deduced E2 strengths illustrate the enhanced collectivity of the neutron-rich Fe isotopes up to N=40. The results are interpreted by the generalized concept of valence proton symmetry which describes the evolution of nuclear structure around N=40 as governed by the number of valence protons with respect to Z~30. The deformation suggested by the experimental data is reproduced by state-of-the-art shell calculations with a new effective interaction developed for the fpgd valence space., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The low-spin structure of 93Nb has been studied using the (n,n' gamma) reaction at neutron energies ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 MeV and the 94Zr(p,2n gamma)93Nb reaction at bombarding energies from 11.5 to 19 MeV. States at 1779.7 and 1840.6 keV, respectively, are proposed as mixed-symmetry states associated with the coupling of a proton hole in the p_1/2 orbit to the 2+_1,ms state in 94Mo. These assignments are derived from the observed M1 and E2 transition strengths to the symmetric one-phonon states, energy systematics, spins and parities, and comparison with shell model calculations., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

A generalized M1 sum rule for orbital magnetic dipole strength from excited symmetric states to mixed-symmetry states is considered within the proton-neutron interacting boson model of even-even nuclei. Analytic expressions for the dominant terms in the B(M1) transition rates from the first and second $2^+$ states are derived in the U(5) and SO(6) dynamic symmetry limits of the model, and the applicability of a sum rule approach is examined at and in-between these limits. Lastly, the sum rule is applied to the new data on mixed-symmetry states of 94Mo and a quadrupole d-boson ratio $nd(0^+_1)/nd(2^+_2) \approx 0.6$ is obtained in a largely parameter-independent way, Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, Revtex

Shell model calculations have been performed for the nucleus 94Mo. The calculated excitation energies and electromagnetic properties of low-lying states are in good agreement with the data, which include states with mixed-symmetry (MS) assignments in previous interacting boson model studies. In the shell model large isoscalar E2 matrix elements are found between states with MS assignments indicating that they form a class of states with similar proton-neutron symmetry., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX, Nucl.Phys.A (in press)

The odd-mass $^{117}$Sn nucleus was investigated in nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments up to an endpoint energy of the incident photon spectrum of 4.1 MeV at the bremsstrahlung facility of the Stuttgart University. More than 50 mainly hitherto unknown levels were found. From the measurement of the scattering cross sections model independent absolute electric dipole excitation strengths were extracted. The measured angular distributions suggested the spins of 11 excited levels. Quasi-particle phonon model calculations including a complete configuration space were performed for the first time for a heavy odd-mass spherical nucleus. These calculations give a clear insight in the fragmentation and distribution of the $E1$, $M1$, and $E2$ excitation strength in the low energy region. It is proven that the $1^{-}$ component of the two-phonon $[2^{+}_{1} \otimes 3^{-}_{1}]$ quintuplet built on top of the $1/2^{+}$ ground state is strongly fragmented. The nucleus 94Mo was investigated using a powerful combination of gamma-singles photon scattering experiments and gamma-gamma-coincidence studies following the beta-decay of 94mTc. The data survey short-lived J^pi=1+,2+ states and include branching ratios, E2/M1 mixing ratios, lifetimes, and transition strengths. The mixed-symmetry (MS) 1+ scissors mode and the 2+ MS state are identified from M1 strengths. A gamma transition between MS states was observed and its rate was measured. Nine M1 and E2 strengths involving MS states agree with the O(6) limit of the interacting boson model-2 using the proton boson E2 charge as the only free parameter., Comment: 9 pages, 3 PostScript figures included, ReVTeX, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters, tentatively scheduled for August 9, 1999

Results of nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments on $^{117}$Sn are reported. More than 50 $\gamma$ transitions with $E_{\gamma} < 4$ MeV were detected indicating a strong fragmentation of the electromagnetic excitation strength. For the first time microscopic calculations making use of a complete configuration space for low-lying states are performed in heavy odd-mass spherical nuclei. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the data. It is concluded that although the E1 transitions are the strongest ones also M1 and E2 decays contribute substantially to the observed spectra. In contrast to the neighboring even $^{116-124}$Sn, in $^{117}$Sn the $1^-$ component of the two-phonon $[2^+_1 \otimes 3^-_1]$ quintuplet built on top of the 1/2$^+$ ground state is proved to be strongly fragmented., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
